In the world of QAnon conspiracy theorists, back issues of the long defunct magazine George are hot commodities and vital maps to unlocking a key mystery.

 

According to one faction of QAnon believers, George’s founder, John F. Kennedy Jr., faked his 1999 death in a plane crash to somehow team up with Donald Trump to take on a Satanic cabal. Some have even identified Vincent Fusca, a Trump supporter who often wears a T-shirt with a cover of George printed on it at pro-Trump events, as JFK Jr. in disguise.

 

These QAnon supporters suspect issues of George might lay out JFK Jr.’s plan, if only they could manage to decode them.

 

Now one QAnon ally is taking George mania even further and has announced plans to bring the magazine back. Gene Ho, a former photographer for Trump’s 2016 campaign and frequent guest at Q conventions, claimed in a video posted online recently that he’s “the new editor of George.”

 

“Hey friends, it’s Gene Ho here, and I need an introduction,” Ho says in the video. “But there’s someone that you know that doesn’t need an introduction — none other than JFK Jr.! Because he was the first editor of George. And here’s the thing, I am the next editor of George. Yes, George is coming back”.

 

On Wednesday, a Times Square billboard announced the magazine’s supposed return with a cover bearing the George logo and a painting portraying Trump as Paul Revere.

But instead of the likes of model Cindy Crawford and actor Rob Lowe, who graced the cover of George during its 1995 to 2001 run, Ho’s reboot looks set to swap the Hollywood stars for QAnon luminaries.

 

The cover promises a “sit down” with Scott McKay, a tomahawk-toting QAnon leader known as “Patriot Streetfighter.” The issue also features an interview with “The Commander’s Artist,” a right-wing illustrator known on the far-right for portraying Trump allies like lawyer Sidney Powell and former general Michael Flynn as Revolutionary War heroes. On an email sign-up page, potential George subscribers are asked whether they’re interested in coverage of topics like “Spirituality” and “MAGA / Patriotism.”

 

It’s not clear whether Ho, who didn’t respond to a request for comment, has any legal right to use the George name or logo. Last September, a Florida company called Retrobrands USA applied for what appears to be the only existing magazine-related “George” trademark, according to a search of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The company, which also didn’t respond to a request for comment, describes its mission on its website as reviving “abandoned consumer iconic brands.”

 

Whatever remains of the original George’s assets appears to rest with the Hearst media conglomerate, which purchased George’s parent company in 2011, 10 years after the magazine ceased publication. Hearst didn’t respond to an email about whether it has any interest in the brand.

 

The supposed George relaunch is just the latest career reinvention for Ho, who ran an unsuccessful bid last year to become mayor of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Ahead of the election, Ho scrubbed QAnon-related merchandise from his website, including a “Trump/Kennedy 2020” shirt that alluded to the QAnon idea that JFK Jr. would replace Mike Pence on Trump’s reelection ticket.

 

Despite tying himself to the George brand, Ho is vague about whether he himself believes JFK Jr. is still alive.

 

“Anything to do with JFK Jr. is a resounding 100 percent ‘no comment,’” Ho said in a May appearance on a right-wing internet show.

 

JFK Jr.’s unusual position in the QAnon mythos has disturbed his loved ones. After a faction of QAnon believers paraded through Dallas last year, convinced that JFK Jr. would come back to life, one of his friends described the adoration to Town & Country as “terrifying.”

The Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund, a non-profit organization co-founded by Jack Dorsey, Alex Morcos and Martin White, is backing 13 Bitcoin Core developers facing lawsuits by Craig Wright. The cases could potentially have major impacts on the future of Bitcoin and open-source software development.

 

Eleven of the developers being supported by the Fund will file their defense on April 26. Tulip Trading Limited v. Bitcoin Association For BSV & Others, in which the developers are named, stems from an alleged hack in February 2020 that resulted in the loss of 111,000 bitcoin that Wright claims to own. In February 2021, Tulip Trading issued a “Letter Before Action” announcing its intention to take legal action against certain Bitcoin developers to recover the allegedly lost bitcoin.

 

Should the UK courts rule in Tulip Trading’s favor, open-source developers could be considered fiduciaries to users of software that they have contributed to, even in projects without any formal assumption of duty or compensation for costs and associated risks. Alex Morcos, the co-founder of Chaincode Labs and the Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund, said, "the Tulip Trading case threatens not only the MIT License but also the very notion of freedom of speech."

 

Craig Wright has also brought a second lawsuit against Bitcoin developers in which he alleges that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, and thus owns the copyright for the Bitcoin Whitepaper and the database rights for the Bitcoin blockchain.

 

Should Wright be successful, “it would, in the eyes of the law, allow Craig Wright ultimate control over the Bitcoin network,” a press release sent to Bitcoin Magazine says. However, it should be noted that Bitcoin is a protocol and network made up of all its participants worldwide. Bitcoin can not be controlled by any one individual, institution, or government. The law cannot give anyone complete control over the Bitcoin network.

 

Jess Jonas, the Chief Legal Officer of the Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund, said: "We believe that these lawsuits are frivolous, but we still have to oppose them vigorously … fighting for the right of developers to create free and open-source software without fear of legal retaliation.”

 

Jack Dorsey, CEO of Block and co-founder of the Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund, said, "the outcomes of these cases are important for everyone, even those who may not be interested in Bitcoin, because these lawsuits could have serious detrimental effects on open-source development writ large, which will negatively impact our lives in ways we may not even realize until it’s too late."

Now, if I can plug something into a USB port…. that's a different story, and there are evolving measures to prevent exploits via USB, display port, and even PCI-E. Although, these are considered relatively low risk exploits because they do require physical access to the hardware and a rather rare skill set/hardware tool set.

 

It's less that backdoors are built into devices and more that engineering docs are available to "spies" working for us and they don't have to guess how a cpu architecture works while analyzing it for attack strategies.

Sixth Circuit Panel Rejects Bump Stock Ban (Again)

Today, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit decided Hardin v. BATF, concluding that a bump stock is not a machine gun "part" prohibited under federal law. Judge Gilman wrote for the court, joined by Judge McKeague. Judge Bush concurred in the judgment.

 

Here's how Judge GIlman summarizes the court's conclusions:

The placement of a bump stock on a semiautomatic rifle causes the rifle to function essentially like a machinegun by dramatically increasing the rate of fire. And the possession of a machinegun is a criminal offense under the Gun Control Act of 1968. This raises the question of whether a bump stock is a machinegun "part" as defined by the National Firearms Act of 1934. The question is a close one on which reasonable jurists have disagreed, a disagreement caused by ambiguities in how the applicable statute defines the term "machinegun."

An Act of Congress could clear up the ambiguities, but so far Congress has failed to act. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (the ATF) has been on both sides of this issue, with its current regulation (the Rule) banning bump stocks as a machinegun part. In this situation, the rule of lenity that is applicable to criminal offenses requires us to rule in favor of Hardin.

Judge Bush wrote separately to express his view that the government should lose even without the rule of lenity. His separate opiion concurring in the judgement reads:

I agree that the district court's judgment should be reversed. At a minimum, as the majority opinion holds, the National Firearms Act of 1934 admits of an interpretation that excludes a bump stock from the definition of a "part" of a "machinegun" under that statute. Indeed, this is the original interpretation that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) gave to the statute. See ATF Rule 2006-2 at 2; 27 C.F.R. §§ 478.11 (2014), 479.11 (2016). That ATF later changed its views in order to ban bump stocks does not render unreasonable the ATF's first reading of the statute. Indeed, the ATF's first take aligns with the views of numerous judges on this court and elsewhere who have considered the relevant statutory text. See, e.g., Gun Owners of Am., Inc. v. Garland, 19 F.4th 890, 910 (6th Cir. 2021) (Murphy, J., dissenting), cert. denied, 143 S. Ct. 83 (2022); Cargill v. Garland, 57 F.4th 447 (5th Cir. 2023) (en banc), petition for cert. filed (April 7, 2023). Therefore, even accepting (as does the majority opinion) that the statute could reasonably be read either way as to the legality of bump stocks, the statute must be read under the rule of lenity to exclude a bump-stock rifle from the definition of a machinegun. See United States v. Granderson, 511 U.S. 39, 54 (1994); Jones v. United States, 529 U.S. 848, 858 (2000) (if there are two possible "readings of what conduct Congress has made a crime," the "harsher alternative" reading should be rejected because "Congress should have spoken in language that is clear and definite") (quoting United States v. Universal C.I.T. Credit Corp., 344 U.S. 218, 22122 (1952)). That is the import of the majority's reasoning.

But I would go further. As explained by Judge Murphy in Gun Owners of America, Inc. v. Garland, the best reading of the statute is that Congress never gave the ATF "the power to expand the law banning machine guns through [the] legislative shortcut" of the ATF's rule at issue in this appeal, see Bump-Stock-Type Devices, 83 Fed. Reg. 66,514 (Dec. 26, 2018) (the Rule). See 19 F.4th at 910 (Murphy, J., dissenting). Simply put, under the statute as it currently reads, the addition of a bump stock to a rifle clearly does not make it a machinegun.

This is not the first time a Sixth Circuit panel ruled that bump stocks are legal. A prior panel reached the same conclusion (albeit on somewhat different grounds) in March 2021. The court then granted rehearing en banc, and split 8-8, affirming the original trial court's judgment in favor of the government without opinion. It will be interesting to see whether this case also gets an en banc rehearing.

The Florida governor earlier this year attracted criticism for his dismissal of the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War as a "territorial dispute."

 

Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, during a trip to Japan, called on Russia and Ukraine to agree to a ceasefire, warning of possible mass casualties should the war continue.

 

"It’s in everybody’s interest to try to get to a place where we can have a cease-fire," he said in a Tuesday interview with Nikkei Asia. "You don’t want to end up in like a Verdun situation, where you just have mass casualties, mass expense and end up with a stalemate."

 

The Battle of Verdun was a lengthy engagement during the First World War that last more than nine months. With an estimated 750,000 killed or wounded on both sides, it remains one of the bloodiest battles in human history.

 

The Florida governor further called on European powers to play a greater role in handling the conflict, highlighting the contributions of Poland but noting that other countries had done little.

 

"The Europeans really need to do more [on Ukraine]," he asserted (parenthetical original). "I mean, this is their continent. The U.S. has provided security for them. And yes, Poland — there’s some that are doing stuff, and that should be appreciated. But Germany, they’re not doing anything."

 

DeSantis further insisted that U.S. allies, including those in the Pacific, needed to look to their own defense, even as the U.S. seeks to thwart Russian and Chinese expansion. He further contended that China stood as a comparable threat to the United States now as the Soviet Union did during the Cold War.

US Waged Years-Long Shadow War Against Wagner Mercenaries In Africa

 

US special forces and intelligence are running a proxy war aimed at disrupting Russia's Wagner Group mercenaries in the Middle East and North Africa, recently unveiled Pentagon leaks show.

 

The Biden administration has long expressed concern over Wagner's role not just in Ukraine, where it has been spearheading efforts to gain Russian victory over Bakhmut, but especially its expanding presence in Africa as well.

 

This shadow war appears to have been going for years even before the Ukraine war, with the classified documents which first showed up on Discord confirming that the US military is actively targeting Wagner fighters in secret operations.

 

The Washington Post was the first to highlight the US intelligence related to Wagner, and reports the following:

 

One document in the trove lists nearly a dozen “kinetic” and other options that could be pursued as part of “coordinated U.S. and allied disruption efforts.” The files propose providing targeting information to help Ukraine forces kill Wagner commanders, and cite other allies’ willingness to take similar lethal measures against Wagner nodes in Africa.

 

But, the Post underscores, these operations have done little to degrade Wagner's presence and operations. Interestingly there's even mention of a major incident in Libya:

 

And yet, there is little in the trove to suggest that the CIA, Pentagon or other agencies have caused more than minor setbacks for Wagner over a six-year stretch during which the mercenary group, controlled by Putin ally Prigozhin, gained strategic footholds in at least eight African countries, among 13 nations where Prigozhin has operated in some capacity, according to one document.

 

The only direct military strike mentioned in the files refers to “a successful unattributed attack in Libya” that “destroyed a Wagner logistics aircraft.” The document provides no further detail about the operation or why that single plane — part of a far larger Wagner fleet — was targeted.

 

It remains unclear whether the Libya operation was accomplished using US proxy forces on the ground (such as US-trained Libyan militias), or if it was a direct special forces or CIA attack. Likely it was the former scenario, given the extreme risk for American commandos in Libya.

 

Russian state media has meanwhile also taken note of the story, with RT writing this week that "A second leaks-based story published by the Post on Monday cites a document alleging that Ukraine’s military intelligence service, the GUR, and its head, Kirill Budanov, planned an attack on Wagner officers in Mali." Russia is alleging this shows a deliberate campaign to assassination Wagner PMC commanders.

China Laments Chile Nationalizing Key Green Energy Mineral Lithium, Freezing Beijing Out

 

China’s state-run Global Times on Monday filed a gloomy report on Chile’s plans to nationalize its lithium industry, which would freeze Beijing out of exploiting the vital “green energy” mineral.

 

The editors vacillated between warning Chile that it courts disaster, and huffing that China does not really need Chile’s lithium output.

 

Chile’s left-wing President Gabriel Boric gave a televised address last Thursday to announce that a state-owned company would take control of all lithium production, ostensibly because it would be better able to implement revolutionary new filtration technologies.

 

Chile is currently the world’s second-largest producer of lithium, which is essential for producing electric vehicle batteries. Australia is the top producer, but Chile has much larger reserves waiting to be tapped.

 

Existing lithium production techniques rely on extracting the metal by pumping mineral-rich brine from deep underground and pouring it into huge evaporation ponds. Evaporation is slow, relatively inefficient, and creates undesirable gas byproducts.

 

Boric said Chile’s nationalized production company will shift to direct lithium extraction (DLE), a new and unproven technique that uses extensive filtration systems to extract lithium from brine without evaporation – effectively replacing the vast evaporation ponds with enclosed refinery complexes.

And now the consultancy giant has scored a contract with the Reserve Bank of Australia to help manage the underpayments of a number of current and former staff over the past seven years.

 

This is not the only government, or government adjacent, contract that PWC has scored since the January debacle.

A coalition of gun rights advocacy groups and individual citizens have filed a lawsuit against a new Washington state ban on firearms deemed “assault weapons” as soon as the legislation was signed into law by Gov. Jay Inslee.

 

The complaint filed by the Firearms Policy Coalition and Second Amendment Foundation in the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington argues that HB 1240’s ban on certain types of semi-automatic rifles, pistols and shotguns violates the Second and Fourteenth Amendment.

 

Taking effect the moment it was signed by Inslee on April 25, HB 1240 bans more than 60 semi-automatic rifles along with other semi-automatic rifles based on either length [shorter than 30 inches] or whether it has one or more accessory or feature. Certain types of semi-automatic shotguns and handguns would also be banned. The legislation was proposed by Attorney General Bob Ferguson and sponsored by Rep. Jamie Pedersen, D-Seattle.

 

The lawsuit alleges that by doing so “the State of Washington has criminalized one of the most common and important means by which its citizens can exercise their fundamental right to self-defense.”

 

The lawsuit cites the recent Bruen decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, which overturned a New York State law prohibiting people from carrying firearms outside their home without a license. The majority opinion stated that there were two metrics to apply to a gun law. “Whether modern and historical regulations impose a comparable burden on the right of armed self-defense, and second, whether that regulatory burden is comparably justified.” Another metric was whether the firearm is in common use.

 

The lawsuit asserts that HB 1240 does that, particularly regarding the AR-15, which it claims is “among the most popular firearms in the nation, and they are owned by millions of Americans.”

 

Speaking at an April 25 bill signing, Ferguson said that “we are a nation of laws and they [gun rights advocates] have the right to challenge that. We have defended a number of bills. Our record so far is pretty good. We plan to keep that record intact.”

 

Also signed by Inslee was HB 1143, which requires gun purchasers complete a background check and wait 10 business days after purchase to take ownership of a firearm. The purchaser must also show proof of taking a safety training course.

 

SB 5078 focuses on the firearms industry by making them legally liability for gun sales if they do not take “reasonable precautions” to ensure they’re not sold to people who are not legally allowed to own them. The bill also prohibits firearm manufacturers from marketing any gun products to minors.

 

Pedersen said at the April 25 bill signing that if a “manufacturer is going to target youth with a message about how cool it is to go shoot assault weapons, you may have some responsibility the next time there is a mass shooting.”

FIRST ON FOX: A House Judiciary subcommittee hearing on Wednesday will feature the testimony from a whistleblower who will warn lawmakers that the U.S. has become the "middleman" in a multibillion dollar migrant child trafficking operation at the border.

The hearing, "The Biden Border Crisis: Exploitation of Unaccompanied Alien Children," will be held by the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement and will examine the surge in unaccompanied children (UACs) at the southern border.

According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) statistics, the number of UACs who arrive at the border has swelled from 33,239 in fiscal year 2020 to more than 146,000 in fiscal year 2021 and 152,000 in fiscal year 2022. So far in fiscal year 2023, there have been more than 70,000 encounters of unaccompanied children.

When child migrants are encountered at the border, they are transferred into the custody of Health and Human Services (HHS) and then united with a sponsor – typically a parent or family member already in the U.S.

But the Biden administration has been rocked by a number of reports that officials have been unable to make contact with more than 85,000 child migrants; and more recently, administration officials reportedly ignored signs of "explosive" growth in child labor. A number have been forced into indentured servitude to pay back smugglers and have worked in dire conditions.

The Wednesday hearing will hear from three witnesses: Tara Lee Rodas, a HHS whistleblower formerly with an inspector general's office; Sheena Rodriguez, founder and president of Alliance for a Safe Texas; and Jessica Vaughn, director of Policy Studies at the Center for Immigration Studies.

Rodas will warn of a problem that predates the administration but has increased significantly during the recent migrant crisis, according to a copy of her written testimony obtained by Fox News Digital.

"Today, children will work overnight shifts at slaughterhouses, factories, restaurants to pay their debts to smugglers and traffickers. Today, children will be sold for sex," she will say. "Today, children will call a hotline to report they are being abused, neglected, and trafficked. For nearly a decade, unaccompanied children have been suffering in the shadows."

Rodas will talk about her volunteering at an emergency intake site in California to help the HHS Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) identify sponsors for minors who have come across the border.

"I thought I was going to help place children in loving homes. Instead, I discovered that children are being trafficked through a sophisticated network that begins with being recruited in their home country, smuggled to the U.S. border, and ends when ORR delivers a child to a sponsor – some sponsors are criminals and traffickers and members of Transnational Criminal Organizations. Some sponsors view children as commodities and assets to be used for earning income – this is why we are witnessing an explosion of labor trafficking," Rodas' written remarks show.

"Whether intentional or not, it can be argued that the U.S. Government has become the middleman in a large scale, multi-billion-dollar, child trafficking operation run by bad actors seeking to profit off the lives of children."

Rodriguez, of the Alliance for a Safe Texas, will share her experiences of encountering unaccompanied children at the border, including teenage boys whom she said told her that cartel cooperatives transported children through Mexico and held them at warehouses with armed guards. She will also call for the investigation of federal agencies responsible and for the ending of releasing migrants to sponsors.

"We can no longer turn a blind eye and pretend this isn’t happening. Congress has the power to stop this, which is why I am calling on you to do what is right," her testimony says.

Vaughn will call, too, for congressional action, including the ending of legal loopholes that she says force the government "to operate a massive catch and release program for illegally-arriving alien children."

"They have been carelessly funneled through the custody of U.S. government agencies and contractors, and handed off to very lightly vetted sponsors (who are usually also here illegally) in our communities without regard to their safety and well-being," she will say. "There is no question that the system for processing minors who cross illegally is dysfunctional, and has been for some time, and needs to be fixed."
