IRS whistleblower reveals Biden's DOJ interfered in Hunter Biden tax probe

 

"Despite what whistleblowers described as a clear-cut case for tax liability on these payments, IRS investigators say they found themselves hamstrung, internally."

 

On Thursday, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith released five new documents revealing evidence from two IRS whistleblowers who alleged that the Justice Department had interfered with the probe into Hunter Biden’s taxes.

 

In a press conference, Smith said "whistleblowers claim the Biden Department of Justice is intervening and overstepping when it comes to the investigation of the president’s son."

 

"Despite what whistleblowers described as a clear-cut case for tax liability on these payments, IRS investigators say they found themselves hamstrung, internally.

 

"The testimony we have just released details a lack of US attorney independence, recurring unjustified delays, unusual actions outside the normal course of any investigation, a lack of transparency across the investigation and prosecution teams, and bullying and threats from the defense counsel."

 

Smith said this was a "campaign of delay, divulge, and deny."

 

The whistleblowers said that reoccurring delays pervaded the investigation, "including authenticating a WhatsApp message in which Hunter Biden demands payment from Chinese officials, during which he noted that his father was in the room.

 

In an interview with the Ways and Means Committee on May 26, 2023, Gary Shapley, a supervisory special agent with the IRS Criminal Investigation, said that "Since October 2022, IRS CI has taken every opportunity to retaliate against me and my team."

 

"Even after IRS CI senior leadership has been made aware on a recurring basis that the Delaware US Attorney’s Office and the Department of Justice was acting improperly, they acquiesced to a DOJ request to remove the entire team from the Hunter Biden investigation, a team that had been investigating it for over 5 years."

 

Shapley said he was "blowing the whistle" because the "Delaware US Attorney's Office, Department of Justice Tax, and Department of Justice provided preferential treatment and unchecked conflicts of interest in an important and high-profile investigation of the President's son, Hunter Biden."

 

Shapley said the mission of the IRS CI to investigate potential criminal violations "can only be met by treating every taxpayer we encounter the same."

 

He said that the investigation, which had been launched in November of 2018, had been running smoothly until Biden because the "presumptive Democratic nominee for President in early April 2020," leading to "career DOJ officials dragg[ing] their feet on the IRS taking these investigative steps" which included approving a search warrant and 15 interviews.

 

In a June 16, 2020 call between himself, another special agent, and the chain of command up to the Director of Field Operations, Shapley said he "pointed out that if normal procedures had been followed we already would have executed search warrants, conducted interviews, and served document requests. Nevertheless, my IRS chain of command decided we would defer to DOJ."

 

"From around October 2020 through October 2022, I was the IRS CI manager who interacted directly with the United States Attorney, David Weiss, and individuals at DOJ Tax Division the most," Shapley said.

Far-Left “justice correspondent” for The Nation and frequent MSNBC guest, Elie Mystal, is no stranger to making vile comments about political opponents.

 

On Thursday, Mystal used the tragedy of the missing tourist submarine viewing the wreckage of the Titanic to attack Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito and issue his “death wish” on Alito. Seven Sentenced to Federal Prison for Child Sex Trafficking in Green Lake County

Gregory J. Haanstad, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, announced today that seven federal defendants have been sentenced to prison terms for their involvement in the commercial sexual exploitation of a child in Green Lake County, Wisconsin. All seven pled guilty to the charge of Conspiracy to Commit Sex Trafficking.

According to court documents, on multiple dates between June and November 2019, one of the defendants, Julio “Cesar” Veleta Veleta, transported the victim, a 16-year-old girl who was in foster care in Madison, between Dane County and Green Lake County for her to perform commercial sex acts for dairy farm workers. Another defendant, Evis Garcia Rivera, both paid for sex with the victim and promoted her availability for commercial sex within the Guatemalan national farm worker community in Green Lake County. Eventually, the victim began living with Garcia Rivera and several of the other defendants, who would “loan” the victim to other groups of farm workers in the area for her sexual services.

The Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office (GLCSO) uncovered this conspiracy on Thanksgiving night in 2019, when the victim called 911. Several subjects were arrested that night at the house where the victim had been living, while others were arrested in other locations following further investigation.

In a separate action, five additional defendants were prosecuted in Wisconsin Circuit Court by Green Lake County District Attorney Gerise LaSpisa. Four of these defendants, Rolando Corado Gonzalez, Edwin Rivera Salguero, Ember Rivera, Esler Rivera, have pled guilty to exposing genitals to a child and have been sentenced to state prison time, including a year and a half of initial confinement, and two years of extended supervision.

“The convictions and sentences of the defendants in this case are the direct result of the hard work and excellent collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement,” said U.S. Attorney Haanstad. “Along with our partners, we are committed to protecting and supporting victims of human trafficking, and our enforcement efforts necessarily will include not only the primary traffickers but also others who assist in these trafficking efforts, including those who seek to drive the demand for this type of victimization.”

“The sex trafficking of this 16-year-old victim is a serious and disturbing crime,” said Special Agent in Charge Michael E. Hensle of the FBI Milwaukee Field Office. “The FBI and our partners will continue to work tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice and protect the victims of these heinous crimes.”

“The U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General is committed to working with our law enforcement partners to investigate and bring to justice those who engage in human trafficking and involuntary servitude, particularly when children are involved,” said Irene Lindow, Special Agent-in-Charge, Great Lakes Region, U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General.

“These sentences are reflective of just how damaging crimes against children are and emphasizes HSI’s dedication to hold perpetrators accountable,” said HSI Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago area of operations Sean Fitzgerald. “We, alongside our law enforcement partners, are committed to the eradication of child exploitation from our communities.”

“Human trafficking is an appalling violent crime that occurs across our state and the country, and we must continue to fight it,” said Attorney General Josh Kaul. “Thank you to the investigators, including DCI agents, and prosecutors who worked to hold the defendants accountable.”

Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll said, “We are very pleased with the overall outcome of this case. We are hopeful for the victim and their future. The collaboration of the investigating agencies and attorney’s offices was tremendous. I’m incredibly proud of all the work everyone put into this case to pursue justice on behalf of the victim and the community. Clearly, crimes like these have no boundaries, and any community can be impacted.”

While current federal law prohibits non-U.S. citizens from working in law enforcement, Illinois is looking to change that.

 

The Illinois House and Senate recently passed Bill 3751 allowing some work-eligible non US citizens to serve in law enforcement in the state.

 

The bill states, “Reinserts the provisions of the engrossed bill and adds that an individual against whom immigration action has been deferred by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services under the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) process is allowed to apply for the position of police officer, deputy sheriff, or special policeman, subject to specified requirements. Effective January 1, 2024.”

 

CBS Chicago reports:

 

A bill that would allow non-U.S. citizens to become police officers in Illinois is now on Gov. JB Pritzker’s desk.

 

Federal law states that only U.S. citizens can serve as police officers and deputies. But Illinois House Bill 3751 would change that for immigrants who are work-eligible under federal law.

 

The bill’s sponsor called it a natural progression – now that some undocumented immigrants can become health care workers and military members.

 

But an opponent claims giving non-citizens the right to arrest a U.S. citizen would be a “breach of democracy.”

WASHINGTON — Two IRS whistleblowers told Congress in closed-door testimony released Thursday that there was a Justice Department coverup in the tax fraud investigation of first son Hunter Biden.

 

The two tax agents told the House Ways and Means Committee that they pressed for felony charges against Hunter Biden for ducking $2.2 million in tax payments and charged that evidence implicating the first son was buried by the Justice Department, the panel’s chairman said Thursday.

 

Rep. Jason Smith (R-Mo.) also told reporters that Delaware US Attorney David Weiss sought to bring charges against the 53-year-old in both the District of Columbia and Southern California last year and was denied both times — contradicting sworn testimony by Attorney General Merrick Garland.

 

Weiss, who signed off this week on a probation-only plea deal for Hunter in Delaware, sought repeatedly to be appointed special counsel in the case, including as recently as spring 2022, but was turned down by the Biden Justice Department, the lawmaker alleged.

 

The shocking allegations came two days after Weiss revealed that Hunter Biden had accepted a deal in which he agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor counts of willful failure to pay taxes on at least $3 million in income earned across 2017 and 2018. The first son also agreed to enter a pretrial diversion program to avoid a felony conviction for owning a firearm while addicted to drugs.

 

Smith, 43, outlined several alleged irregularities that the whistleblowers said benefited Hunter Biden.

 

Investigators believed relevant evidence was located “in the guest house of former Vice President Biden,” Smith said, but were told a search warrant would never be approved.

 

“[Assistant US Attorney] Lesley Wolf told us there was more than enough probable cause for the physical search warrant there,”one of the whistleblowers, Gary Shapley, recalled in his interview last month, “but the question was whether the juice was worth the squeeze.”

 

In the September 2020 investigatory meeting, Shapley recalled, Wolf added that “optics were a driving factor in the decision on whether to execute a search warrant. She said a lot of evidence in our investigation would be found in the guest house of former Vice President Biden, but said there is no way we will get that approved.”

Shapley also revealed that Hunter Biden had cited his father in a July 30, 2017, Whatsapp message to one of his Chinese associates, Henry Zhao — a Communist Party official and director of Harvest Fund Management, which invested in Hunter’s firm BHR Partners.

 

“I am sitting here with my father and we would like to understandwhy the commitment made has not been fulfilled,” Hunter wrote. “Tell the director that I would like to resolve this now before it gets out of hand, and now means tonight. And, Z, if I get a call or text from anyone involved in this other than you, Zhang, or the chairman, I will make certain that between the man sitting next to me and every person he knows and my ability to forever hold a grudge that you will regret not following my direction. I am sitting here waiting for the call with my father.”

Joe Biden has repeatedly denied speaking with his son about his overseas business interests, despite clear evidence to the contrary.

 

In another instance of alleged preferential treatment, Shapley alleged Wolf had given Hunter’s lawyers a heads-up that investigators had probable cause to search the first son’s Northern Virginia storage unit, providing an opportunity to remove evidence, the whistleblowers said.

 

“The IRS prepared an affidavit in support of a search warrant for the unit [in December 2020, but … Wolf once again objected,”Shapley said.

 

The fact that Weiss twice tried to prosecute the first son in other jurisdictions before being denied could result in serious repercussions for America’s top lawman. Lying to Congress is a criminal offense.

 

“Attorney General Merrick Garland told Congress Weiss had all the authority necessary,” Smith pointed out. “Well, which is it?”

This past March, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) pressed Garland on whether Weiss was truly able to bring charges without the approval of other Justice Department officials, specifically if the alleged crime occurred outside Delaware.

 

“Without special counsel authority, he could need permission of another US attorney in certain circumstances to bring charges outside the district of Delaware,” Grassley noted at the time. “I would like clarification from you with respect to these concerns.”

 

Garland replied that Weiss would be able to charge Hunter Biden even for crimes that occurred outside Delaware.

 

“The US attorney in Delaware has been advised that he has full authority to make those kind of referrals that you’re talking about or to bring cases in other jurisdictions if he feels it’s necessary. And I will assure that if he does, he will be able to do that,” the AG said.

 

Grassley pressed: “Does the Delaware US attorney lack independent charging authority over certain criminal allegations against the president’s son outside of the district of Delaware?”

 

“If it’s in another district, he would have to bring the case in another district, but as I said, I’ve promised to ensure he’s able to carry out his investigation and that he be able to run it and if he needs to bring it in another jurisdiction, he will have full authority to do that,” Garland said.

 

Chris Clark, an attorney for Hunter Biden, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Neither did the IRS.

 

“The federal government is not treating taxpayers equally,”Smith told reporters Thursday. “The IRS recommended charges against Hunter Biden that included attempt to evade or defeat tax, a felony, fraud or false statements, a felony, and willful failure to file returns, supply information or pay tax. These tax crimes cover an estimated $2.2 million in unreported tax.”

 

The Hunter probe, launched in November 2018, began as an “offshoot of an investigation the IRS was conducting into a foreign-based amateur online pornography platform,” according to Shapley. Hunter was given the code name “Sportsman” by investigators.

 

Smith noted the IRS had uncovered funds from “Ukraine, Romania and China totaling $17.3 million from 2014 to 2019,” with the scandal-hit first son having “personally received $8.3 million.”

 

“What plea deal did Mr. Biden just receive?” Smith asked. “A slap on the wrist for charges that have put other Americans behind bars.”

Australian authorities have issued a legal notice to Twitter demanding the social media giant explain how it is tackling online hate on its platform.

eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said her agency had received more complaints about online hate on Twitter in the past 12 months than any other platform.

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) list of diseases that could cause the next pandemic includes the ominous “Disease X.”

The pathogen “Disease X” is a new disease agent unknown to medical science that likely does not have any treatments or vaccines.

 

Researchers have to prepare for the unknown when it starts to spread.

“You cannot prevent an unknown pathogen from evolving into one that could lead to a pandemic,” Dr. Sandra Adams, a biology professor and virologist at Montclair State University, told NJ Advance Media.

 

However, researchers can use the knowledge they have gained to fight against pandemics.

“You can, however, use what we learned to combat the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic,” she added. The “availability of vaccines worldwide to prevent deaths and serious illness” and “mitigation strategies to reduce the spread” of COVID-19 “until vaccines were developed” were crucial in preventing the most recent pandemic from becoming much worse.

 

Most researchers believe the next “Disease X” will come from animals before infecting humans.

“If a ‘Disease X’ pathogen does evolve, it will likely be from a zoonotic RNA virus,” Adams said. “This means an RNA virus that resides in an animal will develop mutations that will allow it to infect human hosts.”

 

But they have not ruled out other sources, such as laboratory accidents or incidences of bioterrorism.

The WHO started using the term “Disease X” in 2018. It last used the term as COVID-19′s original name when the virus first began spreading across China.

“The COVID-19 pandemic was not the first to wreak havoc on the world and it will not be the last,” the authors of a 2021 article from the journal Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology wrote. “Thus, we need to prepare for the next outbreak as soon as possible.”

 

Adams had a more positive outlook on the fate of “Disease X.”

“Hopefully, we will take the knowledge gained from battling SARS-CoV-2 to prevent ‘Disease X pathogen’ from becoming the next pandemic,” Adams said.

What is ‘Disease X’? COVID experts warn it could cause deadlier pandemic

The World Health Organization keeps a short list of “priority diseases” that could cause the next deadly pandemic.

 

Most of the diseases are already known to us — Ebola, SARS and Zika made the cut — but the final entry has the terrifying name “Disease X.”

The term Disease X is used by the WHO as a placeholder to describe a disease that’s unknown to medical science as a cause of human infections.

And as a new disease agent — whether it’s a virus, a bacterium, a fungus or other agent — there likely won’t be any vaccines or few, if any, treatments available.

“This isn’t the stuff of science fiction,” Dr. Richard Hatchett, of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, told the Telegraph.

“This is a scenario we have to prepare for. This is Disease X.”

 

The WHO coined the term Disease X in 2018.

One year later, as COVID-19 began to spread across China, the world witnessed a deadly pandemic caused by a new virus — a Disease X had emerged.

The head of the World Health Organization makes a speech warning of the next pandemic.

“It is not an exaggeration to say that there is potential of a Disease X event just around the corner,”

Dr. Pranab Chatterjee, researcher at the Department of International Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, told the National Post.

“The recent spate of H5N1 bird flu cases in Cambodia is just a case in point,” Chatterjee added.

Some public health experts believe the next Disease X will be zoonotic, meaning it will originate in wild or domestic animals, then spill over to infect humans.

 

Ebola, HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 were zoonotic outbreaks.

 

However, there are other sources of diseases and bioterrorism could be the cause of the next pandemic.

“The possibility of an engineered pandemic pathogen also cannot be ignored,” said the authors of a 2021 article in the journal Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.

“The release of such pathogens, either through laboratory accidents or as an act of bioterrorism, might lead to a disastrous Disease X as well and has been remarked as a global catastrophic risk,” the authors added.

 

Another possible source could be “zombie” viruses that have been locked in permafrost or other frozen landscapes for centuries, but are released by a warming climate.

The other priority diseases on the WHO list include Marburg virus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, Lassa fever, Nipah and henipaviral diseases, Rift Valley fever and Middle East respiratory syndrome.

 

To prevent and combat an outbreak of Disease X, medical experts worldwide are clamoring for an increase in funds to support the surveillance of, and research into, potential pandemic agents.

“The COVID-19 pandemic was not the first to wreak havoc on the world and it will not be the last,” wrote the authors of the Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology article.

“Thus, we need to prepare for the next outbreak as soon as possible.”

To the Editor—An old adage says, “Prevention is better than cure.” Nothing exemplifies this idea better than “Disease X.”

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Disease X represents the knowledge that a serious international epidemic could be caused by a pathogen currently unknown to cause human disease.”1

 

Richard Hatchett, chief executive officer (CEO) of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), said about Disease X, “It might sound like science fiction, but Disease X is something we must prepare for.”2

In a list of diseases that the WHO considers high priority in terms of research and development, Disease X occupies a spot among diseases such as Ebola, Zika, and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).1

Unexpected outbreaks of infectious disease (Disease X) have repeatedly rocked the medical confidence and have taken the medical world by surprise.3

 

Some experts have even commented that COVID-19, caused by severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), met the standards to be considered the first Disease X,4

while some authors have called Zika a Disease X.5 However, one unfortunate possibility is that COVID-19 and other recent pandemics might have been milder versions of what will eventually be the most prominent Disease X.

Disease X is supposed to be caused by a “pathogen X.”

Such a pathogen is expected to be a zoonosis, most likely an RNA virus, emerging from an area where the right mix of risk factors highly promotes the risk for sustained transmission.6

 

The WHO has been criticized for underreacting on pandemics such as the 2014 Ebola pandemic,7

and as an organization with limited funding and weak political power, the WHO usually fails when it comes to timely and strong acts to reduce the spread of transmissible diseases.8

A study that aimed at figuring out where the responsibility lies for the 2014 Ebola outbreak also concluded that while the WHO might have been partly to blame, it’s also the lack of cooperation from governments and delayed funding aggravates the situation.7

 

Scientists have also commented that although the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the world, as soon as it disappears into the background, healthcare systems will remain the same.

Politicians might use the weak recovering economy due to the pandemic as a reason to delay funding for epidemic preparation, as a result failing to produce timely effective measures.8

 

Similarly, while emerging zoonotic pathogens are a threat that needs to be monitored, the possibility of an engineered pandemic pathogen also cannot be ignored.9

The release of such pathogens, either through laboratory accidents or as an act of bioterrorism, might lead to a disastrous Disease X as well and has been remarked as a global catastrophic risk.10

 

There is a dire need to seriously fund the surveillance of, research into, and treatment of emerging potential pandemic agents that could cause Disease X.8 Despite the grim situation, steps can be taken to stop Disease X and to reduce the spread and damage of Disease X by properly and preemptively preparing for it. (1)

We need to develop international guidelines to control bioterrorism. Bioterrorism attacks could also result in an epidemic, for example, if Ebola or Lassa viruses were used as biological agents. (2)

Advice of the academics should be sought in a timely way without any political involvement. (3)

Immediate and appropriate travel restrictions and airport screening will need to be implemented to contain the spread of pathogen X across borders. (4)

The world’s scientists, clinicians, and infectious disease experts must act collaboratively to investigate, control, and eliminate the disease in a timely way. (5)

Widespread testing and aggressive contact tracing can effectively contain the outbreak. (6) Timely investments can be made to accelerate the development, availability, and approval of medical countermeasures (like diagnostics, vaccines, and clinical trials) required before and during the pandemic. (7)

Active surveillance of virus laboratories is needed to avoid a potential leak of a new virus.

 

A One Health approach has also been proposed that provides a complete way to address the underlying issues for the spread of Disease X: bridging institutional gaps, defining priority risk areas and pathogens, and emphasizing supposed risk factors for subsequent events involving emerging and re-emerging infectious disease pathogens.11

The COVID-19 pandemic was not the first to wreak havoc on the world and it will not be the last. Thus, we need to prepare for the next outbreak as soon as possible.

The statistics for COVID-19 are staggering. The World Health Organization reports that as of January 2022, there have been more than 300 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 (303,169,398 cases as of January 9, 2022) and more than 5.4 million deaths from COVID-19 (5,479,804 deaths as of January 9, 2022). Within just the United States, there have been almost 60 million confirmed cases (59,848,908 as of January 9, 2022) and more than 800,000 deaths (836,603 deaths as of January 9, 2022). Numbers continue to rise each day.

 

Several vaccines for COVID-19 are available, although they are not distributed fairly around the globe. But as of January 2022, more than 9 billion vaccine doses have been administered globally (9,118,223,397 vaccine doses administered as of January 5, 2022). And within the United States, almost half a billion vaccine doses have been administered (485,275,895 vaccine doses administered as of December 23, 2021).

The months-long surge of illegal immigrants on America's southern border has gone beyond crisis mode, and Catholic Charities has been at the center of it.

Church Militant's Kristine Christlieb briefs us on how the Catholic nonprofit may be profiting illegally from the migration catastrophe.

As Church Militant and the Lepanto Institute have been reporting for years, illegal immigration is a cash cow for nonprofit giant Catholic Charities.

Four Republican members of Congress plus the state of Texas are hot on the charity's trail, both claiming some of its immigration activities may be illegal.

Wednesday, in a letter addressed to the organization's Virginia headquarters, Congressmen Lance Gooden and Jake Ellzey of Texas, Andy Biggs of Arizona and Tom Tiffany of Wisconsin ordered the charity to "preserve all information related to any expenditures submitted for reimbursement from the federal government related to migrants encountered at the southern border."

The Congressmen promise an investigation, saying, "Catholic Charities is violating federal law and regulations, placing migrants and American communities at risk, and subjecting local communities to unreasonable burdens."

Catholic immigrant advocates reject claims of facilitating illegal crossings

NEW YORK – Immigrant advocacy organizations in Texas say they have not yet been contacted by state Attorney General Ken Paxton after he pledged to launch an investigation this week, at the request of the governor, into the alleged role of non-governmental organizations in illegal border crossings.

Joan Rosenhauer, the executive director of Jesuit Refugee Service, said in a statement to Crux that “accusations like this can create a false narrative, which can be damaging, about the work NGOs are doing at the border and ultimately cause harm to asylum-seekers and organizations serving them.”

The same day Abbott called for an investigation, Catholic Charities USA received a letter from four House representatives requiring it to “preserve all information related to any expenditures submitted for reimbursement from the federal government related to migrants encountered at the southern border.”

The letter is signed by Republican House representatives Lance Gooden of Texas, Tom Tiffany of Wisconsin, Jake Ellzey of Texas, and Andy Biggs of Arizona.

They allege in the letter that border NGOs “profit off of exploiting [U.S.] immigration laws,” and fuel the rise of migrants crossing the border.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has opened an investigation into the Texas Bar Foundation for its possibly aiding and abetting the mass influx of illegal aliens. The investigation is based on credible complaints filed by U.S. Congressman Troy Nehls (TX-22) and members of the public.

 

The Texas Bar Foundation is alleged to have knowingly given donations to entities that encourage, participate in, and fund illegal immigration at the Texas-Mexico border, and potentially using taxpayer dollars received from the State Bar of Texas, which appoints the Foundation’s trustees. If true, this is likely an improper use of charitable funds because the funds are diverted from their intended—and potentially unlawful—purpose.

The Attorney General is granted broad powers under the Texas Constitution and by statute to investigate charities to ensure they are operating for the public benefit and in compliance with state law.

 

“Unfortunately, at the very time that our state is facing an unprecedented border crisis and our brave men and women are serving Texas in Operation Lone Star, it appears that the liberal State Bar’s handpicked cronies are misusing charitable funds to make the situation even worse,” stated Attorney General Paxton, “I will not let this illegal behavior continue any further. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed an amicus brief in the Texas Supreme Court urging it to protect the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lubbock’s First Amendment rights to be free from state courts interfering with church doctrine and governance. By allowing a Catholic cleric’s defamation claim against the Diocese of Lubbock to proceed, the State’s brief argues, the lower court failed to give proper respect to the Diocese’s autonomy.

 

“Defending our religious liberty is one of my top priorities,” said Attorney General Paxton. “I will continue to fight for church autonomy and ensure that religious institutions are free from government interference. A church should not be subject to legal sanction for confronting serious societal problems, like sexual abuse, when matters of church governance or church doctrine are at issue.”

 

The case involves a decision by all the Roman Catholic dioceses in Texas to release the names of clergy who have been credibly accused of sexually abusing a minor.

The dioceses released these accusations as part of a Church-wide policy of transparency and accountability for addressing sexual abuse and alleged sexual abuse by clergy.

The Diocese of Lubbock determined that an ordained Deacon of the Catholic Church had been credibly accused of sexually abusing a minor female with mental disabilities on two separate occasions.

The Deacon sued the Diocese of Lubbock for defamation because it released his name –along with other clergy who had been credibly accused of sexually abusing a minor—on the Diocese’s website.

The trial court concluded that the First Amendment prohibits Texas courts from adjudicating the claim but the court of appeals disagreed, forcing the Diocese to file its petition with the Texas Supreme Court.

Second IRS whistleblower backs up claims of DOJ improprieties during Hunter Biden investigation

 

The second whistleblower testified to the committee on June 1 and largely corroborated Shapley's claims.

 

Asecond IRS agent who worked on the Hunter Biden investigation has corroborated many of the claims of Department of Justice improprieties and investigative constraints hampering the federal case against the first son.

 

Biden reached a plea deal with the DOJ this week to plead guilty to two tax crimes and admit to a gun violation that may be dismissed. The DOJ is recommending that he receive no jail time, though a Trump-appointed judge will have the final say on the matter.

 

IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley previously came forward, alleging that federal prosecutors engaged in "preferential treatment and politics" to prevent charges from being brought against Hunter. Shapley subsequently testified to the House Committee on Ways and Means on May 26 to explain his concerns in detail. Just the News has obtained the transcript of that interview.

The second whistleblower, who remains anonymous, was a subordinate of Shapley and one of the IRS criminal investigators participating in the investigation. He and entire team of IRS agents were removed from the case after Shapley brought forward his whistleblower claims. Shapley's attorneys informed Congress in mid-May that the DOJ had removed the team in what they deemed an act of retaliation.

 

The second whistleblower testified to the committee on June 1 and largely corroborated Shapley's claims, whose testimony appeared to undercut a statement from Attorney General Merrick Garland, who indicated that U.S. Attorney David Weiss had free rein to pursue charges against Hunter Biden.

 

"While the impression was that the U.S. Attorney in Delaware has essentially the powers of special counsel in this case, free rein to do as needed, as is clearly shown, this was not the case," the IRS agent told the committee. "The U.S. Attorney in Delaware in our investigation was constantly hamstrung, limited, and marginalized by DOJ officials as well as other U.S. Attorneys."

 

This individual first became known when a letter he wrote to IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel following the purge of the team was included in a whistleblower package that Shapley provided to Congress and the Office of Special Counsel. That letter outlined Shapley and the second whistleblower's extensive efforts to inform IRS leadership of the investigations issues and their unwillingness to address concerns.

 

The whistleblower package sent to Congress from Shapley's attorneys that included the letter also addressed the agency's response to it, in which a superior admonished the unnamed whistleblower for breaking the chain of command and suggested he may have illegally disclosed grand jury information to Werfel.

Disease X

Disease X is a placeholder name that was adopted by the World Health Organization in February 2018 on their shortlist of blueprint priority diseases to represent a hypothetical, unknown pathogen that could cause a future epidemic. The WHO adopted the placeholder name to ensure that their planning was sufficiently flexible to adapt to an unknown pathogen. Director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Anthony Fauci stated that the concept of Disease X would encourage WHO projects to focus their research efforts on entire classes of viruses, instead of just individual strains, thus improving WHO capability to respond to unforeseen strains. In 2020, experts, including some of the WHO's own expert advisors, speculated that COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus strain, met the requirements to be the first Disease X.

Georgia won't update Dominion voting machines before 2024, despite cybersecurity expert warnings

 

The Georgia secretary of state's office is relying on a report commissioned by Dominion regarding the company's voting machines.

 

Georgia is delaying a software update for its Dominion voting machines until after the 2024 presidential election, despite cybersecurity experts warning of vulnerabilities.

 

A nearly 2-year-old report was finally made public last week and showed Dominion voting machines had significant vulnerabilities, which led the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to issue a public advisory last year based on the findings.

 

However, Georgia election officials say that the machines won’t be updated until after the 2024 elections because it's such a massive undertaking.

 

The report was completed in July 2021 by University of Michigan Professor of Computer Science and Engineering J. Alex Halderman with Professor Drew Springall, of Auburn University, and focused in part on vulnerabilities they found after examining Dominion’s ImageCast X Ballot Marking Devices for three months.

 

A redacted copy of the report was released June 14 by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Atlanta Division. ​

 

The report was completed on behalf of the plaintiffs in the case of Curling v. Raffensperger and found the Dominion machines are vulnerable to vote flipping.

 

Halderman suggested the machines were capable of being manipulated in mere minutes by bad actors, saying the QR codes on printed ballots could be altered and malware installed on individual machines “with only brief physical access.”

 

The broader voting system could be attacked if bad actors have the same access to it as certain county-level election officials, the report also concluded.

 

However, Halderman stated there is no evidence such vulnerabilities have been exploited in past elections.

 

“My technical findings leave Georgia voters with greatly diminished grounds to be confident that the votes they cast on [the current Dominion ballot-marking devices] are secured, that their votes will be counted correctly, or that any future elections using Georgia’s [ballot-marking devices] will be reasonably secure from attack and produce correct results,” he wrote.

 

Last June, in response to Halderman’s report, CISA urged election officials to mitigate the risks caused by the vulnerabilities in the Dominion machines but also stated the agency “has no evidence that these vulnerabilities have been exploited in any elections.”

 

Following the Halderman report, Dominion commissioned the nonprofit MITRE Corp.'s National Election Security Lab to respond to the findings. The report, completed in July 2022, was released along with the Halderman report.

 

The MITRE report said the Halderman report findings were “operationally infeasible” when considering adherence to strict security measures, normal voting practices, and scale considerations.

 

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said in a statement following the release of the MITRE report that it "confirms that Georgia’s election infrastructure is secured by the toughest safeguards."

 

He also said: "For years, election deniers have created a cottage industry of ever-shifting claims about conspiracies to change votes, steal elections and undermine voter confidence. This report says it all: Voting machines do not flip votes. Cast ballots are counted as the voter intended. Georgia elections are secure.”

 

Dominion on Wednesday referred Just the News to its website for a response to the MITRE report.

IAEA debunks Ukrainian claim about Europe’s largest nuclear plant

Rafael Mariano Grossi, the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA), denied on Tuesday claims made by the Ukrainian governmentthat the cooling pond of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant(ZNPP) had been rigged with explosives.

 

“The IAEA is aware of reports of mines having been placed near the cooling pond. No mines were observed at the site during the Director General’s visit, including the cooling pond,”Grossi said in a report on the situation at Europe’s largest atomic power facility.

 

There were mines outside the perimeter and “at particular places inside,” which the security personnel at ZNPP explained were for defensive purposes, the IAEA head said.

 

“Our assessment of those particular placements was that while the presence of any explosive device is not in line with safety standards, the main safety functions of the facility would not be significantly affected,” added Grossi.

 

His report comes after claims by Ukrainian President VladimirZelensky and his aide Mikhail Podoliak that Russia had prepared a “terrorist attack” on the facility it has controlled since March 2022

 

Ukrainian intelligence has received information that Russia is planning “a terrorist attack with radiation leakage,” Zelensky said in a tweet on Thursday morning, adding that “the world has been warned, so the world can and must act.”

 

Podoliak claimed that Russia was “considering a large-scale terrorist attack at the ZNPPto stop the Ukrainian counteroffensiveand create a depopulated sanitary gray zone,” and was mining the cooling pond, demanding that “the global world” should announce consequences “not tomorrow. Today.” (These assholes are desperate because their counteroffensive is kaput, they are losing and their propaganda is no longer working. Why would Russia want to stop Ukraine’s failed counteroffensive? Does that make sense?)

 

Zelensky’s claims are “yet another lie,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday, noting that Russia has fully cooperated with the IAEA. Moscow has insisted that Kiev was behind the destruction of the Kakhovka dam earlier this month, which the IAEA describedas a potential threat to the ZNPP’s supply of cooling water.

 

According to Russia,Ukraine has also repeatedly attacked the ZNPP, including an attempted commando raid in September 2022, as the IAEA mission was en route to the site. The most recent attack was on June 9, when Russian air defenses reported bringing down three drones headed for the plant.

 

The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant has six reactors and is located in Energodar, on the right shore of the Dnieper River. It is currently operated by Rosatom in standby mode. The surrounding region officially became part of Russia last September.

Money laundering is a major issue for financial institutions. Banks have long relied on humans to monitor rules-based systems that detect suspicious transactions. These legacy systems yield very low rates of identifying suspicious activities. Google Cloud wants to change the game by introducing an artificial intelligence-powered product designed to turbocharge the detection of money laundering.

 

Current Anti Money Laundering (AML) monitoring products rely entirely on manually defined rules, which yield low rates of identifying illegal activities, ranging from drug and human trafficking to terrorist financing. These systems consume significant resources that have to monitor billions of transactions.

 

Google Cloud's AML is a consolidated machine learning (ML)-generated customer risk score versus the legacy rules-based transaction alerting system financial institutions use. The risk score uses the bank's data, including transactional patterns, network behavior, and Know Your Customer (KYC) data, to identify instances and groups of high-risk retail and commercial customers. The AI can quickly deliver more accurate results and alleviate the workload for banking units that monitor suspicious transactions.

 

AML AI can outperform current systems in detecting financial crime risk. Google provided an example of its Cloud customer HSBC which can now detect two to four times more true positive risk, enhancing its ability to detect suspicious activities.

Titan Lost: Debris Field Consistent with ‘Catastrophic Implosion’ of Tourist Submersible

The U.S. Coast Guard has confirmed that the Titan submersible suffered a “catastrophic implosion” with the loss of all five people on board.

 

The confirmation comes after a debris field was found within the search area earlier Thursday morning, approximately 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic. The debris is consistent with a loss of pressure, the Coast Guard said in a noon media briefing.

 

The debris field consisted of five main components, including the submersible’s tail cone and both the forward and aft end bells separated from the main part of the pressure chamber.

 

The tour operator, OceanGate Expeditions, has also confirmed that that all five on board have perished.

 

The revelation of the debris field came after additional vessels equipped with remotely operated vehicles (ROV) had arrived on scene over the past 24 hours or so.

 

The Coast Guard says the debris was located by an ROV from the Horizon Arctic, an Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) operated by Horizon Maritime, after its ROV reached the sea floor earlier Thursday. The company also operates OceanGate’s expedition support vessel Polar Prince, which launched the Titan sub on Sunday morning and later reported it missing after losing contact with the vessel.

 

The Horizon Arctic arrived on scene at some point on Wednesday after loading deepwater equipment in St. John’s. The equipment included a U.S. military ROV and the U.S. Navy’s Flyaway Deep Ocean Salvage System (FADOSS), a portable and motion-compensated lift system designed for deep ocean lifting for the recovery of large, bulky, and heavy objects such as aircraft or small vessels.

 

BBC reported earlier the debris included “a landing frame and a rear cover from the submersible,” according to someone close to the search. The Coast Guard later confirmed details of the debris in its noon press conference.

 

ROVs will remain on scene to gather information and map the debris.

 

Weather on scene today was reported as winds of 14 mph with gusts up to 19mph, with 4-5ft seas and an air temp of 50°f.

 

OceanGate’s statement is below:

 

“We now believe that our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, have sadly been lost.

 

“These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure, and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans. Our hearts are with these five souls and every member of their families during this tragic time. We grieve the loss of life and joy they brought to everyone they knew.

 

“This is an extremely sad time for our dedicated employees who are exhausted and grieving deeply over this loss. The entire OceanGate family is deeply grateful for the countless men and women from multiple organizations of the international community who expedited wide-ranging resources and have worked so very hard on this mission. We appreciate their commitment to finding these five explorers, and their days and nights of tireless work in support of our crew and their families.

Gas Explosion In China Kills At Least 31 People

At least 31 people were found dead with seven others injured following an explosion at a barbeque restaurant in the Chinese city of Yinchuan, in the northwest Ningxia region.

 

The explosion was reportedly caused by a liquified gas tank that had a leak inside the restaurant.

 

The blast took place at around 8:40 p.m. on Wednesday night. Among the seven injured, one person is currently in critical condition. High school students and retirees were reportedly among those killed in the incident. The other six injured are being treated at a local hospital for minor cuts and burns.

 

Over 100 personnel along with 20 emergency vehicles were dispatched by local authorities to help fight the fire and start a search and rescue, which lasted until 4 a.m. Interviews by police and firefighters indicated that two staff members from the restaurant smelled a pungent gas aroma around an hour prior to the explosion, the Yinchuan government said in a statement.

 

The two employees found that the valve to the gas tank was broken, so they sent it off to another staffer to get the necessary parts to fix it. The explosion then purportedly took place as the valve was being replaced.

 

Chinese police have detained nine people and have frozen their assets, including the restaurant’s manager, employees, and shareholders, according to state media China Youth Daily.

 

Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that the incident was “heartbreaking” and that it was a “profound lesson,” state media reported.

 

Xi expressed that it is crucial to treat those injured and to comfort the families of those affected. He also ordered government authorities to carry out more safety-risk reviews and supervision in key sectors.

 

Explosions have not been uncommon in China with the incidents often being attributed to corruption and lack of safety training and regulations.

 

In January 2022, 16 people were killed by an alleged gas explosion in the city of Chongqing. A year prior, a gas pipe explosion at a market in Shiyan killed 26 people, injured 138, and led to 11 arrests. In 2019, 78 were killed with an additional 76 injured due to an explosion at a chemical plant in the eastern province of Jiangsu.

Titan Sub made from Carbon Fiber-some analysis-how it's made

 

Ain't no Navy sub guy but I do know a lot about carbon fiber (which the sub was made out of ) and they actually were using that in race cars as early as mid 70s-but just wings and aero appendages as no one would stump up the munee to build an entire chassis out of it plus they din't know how it would react in a crash since it was too expensive to crash test-they thought it would splinter and impale any driver inside of it…they later found out it was wayyy better than any steel/titanium/aluminum concoction. How that relates to the sub is I can't imagine how many cycles it takes to permanently damage that weave of carbon fibers and the glue(s)/resins with the repeated pressure loads and cold.

Since they were doing it all on the cheap (logitech controller and bluetoof…C'mom man!) they probably never checked it as you would a race chassis. You can't see cracks on the surface of them either (at least race tubs-chassis) you have to fully scan them-and another reason is that they are made in an autoclave-they have Yuge ones now for entire monocoques. I do remember it wasn't until the early 80s that McLaren got one of it's Arab investors to pay Hercules-who had been doing it for AC purposes for years- to finally build a complete tub out of it. Then once it was proven to be stronger than what they all had it became a race to get supply out of that Mfg (Hercules) or source it somewhere else-costs skyrocketed because of it. They ended up banning the underbody appendages because drivers were blacking out due to the G forces generated by having all the extra aero load (called them 'sliding skirts')created an instant several seconds a lap on the formula cars which then trickled to the sportscars.

A surge in crimes targeting the U.S. Postal Service has some experts warning Americans against sending their checks through the mail.

 

The USPS last month cautioned that it has seen an increase in attacks on letter carriers and mail fraud incidents, with 305 mail carriers robbed in the first half of fiscal year 2023, on pace to exceed the previous year's 412 robberies. At the same time, fraudsters are targeting mailboxes, either stealing letters directly from residents' homes or from the blue USPS collection boxes, the postal service said.

 

The rise in crime targeting postal carriers and mailboxes heightens the risk that mailed checks could be stolen, as has been documented in incidents across the nation. For instance, a rash of thefts from blue collection boxes in Milwaukee led to the break up last month of a criminal ring. The suspects allegedly used stolen "arrow keys," or a universal USPS key that opens mail collection boxes, to pilfer mail, including more than 900 stolen checks, according to a criminal complaint.

 

The theft issues have prompted the USPS to advise that Americans avoid depositing mail in blue collection boxes or leaving it in their own mailboxes for a carrier to pick up. Instead, the agency is now recommending that patrons come inside their local post office to securely send mail.

 

Experts concur with the advisory to only mail checks at the post office.

 

"If you are choosing to mail a check, it is always recommended that you use a secure mail drop such as inside a post office versus an unsecured public-facing mailbox," Caitlin Driscoll of the Better Business Bureau told CBS Pittsburgh.

 

Why is mail theft on the rise?

In an email to CBS MoneyWatch, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service said mail theft is increasing as part of a broader national trend of "increased crime patterns."

 

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service reported roughly 300,000 complaints about mail theft in 2021, more than double the prior year's total. In some cases, criminals are attacking mail carriers and stealing their deliveries. In others, fraudsters are using arrow keys to gain access to postal boxes to take letters, checks and other valuables.

 

A 2020 report from the postal service's Office of Inspector General found that the agency didn't know how many arrow keys were in circulation or how many had been stolen, raising concerns about the security of collection boxes.

 

What is the USPS recommending?

The U.S. Postal Service said that people should avoid allowing either incoming or outgoing mail from sitting in their mailboxes for too long.

 

"You can significantly reduce the chance of being victimized by simply removing your mail from your mailbox every day," the agency said in a statement.

 

The agency also recommends that people post mail inside their local post office or at their workplace; alternatively, they can hand their mail directly to a mail carrier. However, the USPS itself hasn't issued any specific guidance on mailing checks, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service told CBS MoneyWatch.

 

"Our recommendations are provided as an extra precaution for those who feel more comfortable taking their mail to the Postal Office," the agency said.

 

What could happen if my check is stolen?

Thieves use a technique called "check washing" to scam you out of your money. That involves using chemicals that erase your writing on the check, such as the name of the recipient and the amount of the check. Once the payment is blank, they can fill in new information, including the amount.

 

In one case, a man mailed a $42 check to pay a phone bill and was shocked when it was cashed for $7,000, paid out to someone he'd never heard of. In another case, nearly 60 individuals last year were arrested in Southern California on charges of committing more than $5 million in check fraud against 750 people.

My dad was a truck driver and hauled US Mail as a contractor. It always bugged me when he hauled bulk mail (junk mail) the post office would put a security seal on the trailer, and that seal better be intact when it gets to it's destination. First class mail however got no seal.

Saw a vid yesterday that set off a dozen alarm bells for me. Former USA Navy submariner talked about all of the "un-inspirational" shit old Stockton Rush didn't like. One that stood out was the Titan was "rated" for a depth of 4000 meters and Titanic rests at exactly 4000 meters. In addition, Titan's rating was purely mathematical as computed by an engineer. Drought-Hit Panama Canal Further Restricts Maximum Ship Depth

PANAMA CITY, June 21 (Reuters) – The Panama Canal will expand restrictions on the largest ships crossing the waterway, one of the world’s busiest trade passages, the canal authority’s administrator said on Wednesday, citing shallower waters due to drought.

 

The measure follows a series of depth restrictions in the 50-mile (80 km) canal since the beginning of the year due to a drought, which authorities had hoped would ease by the start of the Central American country’s rainy season.

 

Ship traffic, including container ships and oil tankers, using the canal between the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean accounts for about 3.5% of global trade.

 

The new restrictions, which will take effect Sunday, limit neo-Panamax container ships to a depth limit of 43.5 feet (13.3 meters) meaning they must either carry less cargo or shed weight in order to float higher.

 

The previous maximum draft was 44.0 feet.

 

Panamax ships, which use the canal’s older locks, will also face tighter rules on July 9, the port administration told clients in an advisory seen by Reuters.

 

Both classes will see a further limit applied on July 19.

 

Port administrator Ricaurte Vasquez said the July 19 measure will depend on how much rain pours into the lake system surrounding the canal, calling the current lack of rainfall “worrisome” as the canal basin must also provide additional drinking water for residents.

 

El Nino, a periodic warming weather phenomenon, has brought a severe drought along the Pacific coast.

 

Despite the new rules limiting ships’ weight, Vasquez said the flow of ships through the canal has carried on as expected so far.

 

He warned this could, however, see an impact depending on rainfalls and higher route costs due to the new limits.

 

The limits will not affect liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, as they typically report drafts of up to 37 feet, according to the canal authority.

The US Coast Guard is holding a press conference in Boston on the ‘missing’ Titan submarine at 3 pm ET.

 

The US Coast Guard on Thursday said an underwater robot found a “debris field” in search for the OceanGate Titan submarine.

 

The submarine disappeared with five people on board on Sunday.

 

The OceanGate submarine was on a tourist exhibition of the wreckage of the Titanic which is 12,500 feet at the bottom of the Ocean.

LAUREN BOEBERT’S RESOLUTION to impeach President Joe Biden caused drama with fellow MAGA representative Marjorie Taylor Greene on Wednesday, and now Republican leadership has thrown a bucket of ice water on the ploy. Republicans punted the resolution to the House Judiciary and Homeland Security committees in a party-line vote on Thursday after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) reportedly raised concerns that they needed to pump the brakes on the process.

 

The Colorado congresswoman used procedural tactics on Wednesday to force a vote on the resolution, which sought to impeach Biden over his administration’s border and immigration policies. Shortly before Thursday’s vote, Boebert delivered a speech to the chamber, calling her efforts “historic.”

 

“For the first time in 24 years, a House Republican-led majority is moving forward with impeachment proceedings against a current president,” she said. “This bill allows impeachment proceedings to proceed through the traditional institutional channels by building a body of evidence at the committee level.”
