FBI Chief Comey Misled Congress’s 'Gang of 8' Over Russiagate, Lisa Page Memo Reveals

The FBI deceived the House, Senate and the Justice Department about the substance and strength of evidence undergirding its counterintelligence investigation of President Trump, according to a recently declassified document and other material.

 

A seven-page internal FBI memo dated March 8, 2017, shows that "talking points" prepared for then-FBI Director James Comey for his meeting the next day with the congressional leadership were riddled with half-truths, outright falsehoods, and critical omissions. Both the Senate and the House opened investigations and held hearings based in part on the misrepresentations made in those FBI briefings, one of which was held in the Senate that morning and the other in the House later that afternoon. RealClearInvestigations reached out to every member of the leadership, sometimes known as the "Gang of Eight." Some declined to comment, while others did not respond to queries.

 

The talking points were prepared by Lisa Page, a senior FBI lawyer who later resigned from the bureau amid accusations of anti-Trump bias, and were used by Comey in his meeting with Hill leaders. They described reports the FBI received in 2016 from "a former FBI CHS," or confidential human source, about former Trump campaign officials Paul Manafort and Carter Page (no relation to Lisa Page) allegedly conspiring with the Kremlin to hack the election.

 

Quoting from the reports, Comey told congressional leaders that the unidentified informant told the FBI that Manafort "initially 'managed' the relationship between Russian government officials and the Trump campaign, using Carter Page as an intermediary." He also told them that "Page was reported to have had 'secret meetings' in early July 2016 with a named individual in Russia's presidential administration during which they discussed Russia's release of damaging information on Hillary Clinton in exchange for alterations to the GOP platform regarding U.S. policy towards Ukraine."

 

But previous FBI interviews with Carter Page and other key sources indicated that none of that was true – and the FBI knew it at the time of the congressional briefings.

 

The Lisa Page memo anticipated concerns about the quality of information Comey was relaying to Congress and suggested he preempt any concerns with another untruth. The memo advised Comey to tell lawmakers that "some" of the reporting "has been corroborated," and to point out that the informant's "reporting in this matter is derived primarily from a Russian-based source," which made it sound more credible.

 

By this point, however, the FBI knew that the main source feeding unsubstantiated rumors to the informant, Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence agent paid by Hillary Clinton's campaign to dig up dirt on Trump, was American-based.

 

The FBI first interviewed that source – a Russian national named Igor Danchenko who was living in the U.S. and had worked at the Brookings Institution – in January 2017. Danchenko had told them that the anti-Trump dirt he funneled to Steele was dubious hearsay passed along over drinks with his high school buddies and an old girlfriend named Olga Galkina, who had made up the accusations about Carter Page and Manafort that the FBI relayed to Congress.

 

Danchenko is now under criminal indictment in Special Counsel John Durham's ongoing investigation for lying about the sourcing for his information. The source to whom he attributed spurious charges against Trump – including his being compromised by a sex tape held by the Kremlin – was a fabrication, according to the indictment. He never spoke with the person as he claimed. Another source turned out to be a longtime Hillary Clinton campaign adviser.

 

The FBI did not tell the Gang of Eight that Danchenko was working for Steele and did not really have any sources inside the Kremlin, according to the script prepared for Comey, which was recently declassified as part of pre-trial discovery in Special Counsel John Durham's probe. The FBI also concealed Steele's identity and the fact he was working for the Clinton campaign.

'Crowning' Deception

Adding to the deception, Comey referred to the unnamed informant by the codename "CROWN," making it appear as if Steele's dossier was a product of British intelligence, although Steele had not worked for the British government for several years and was reporting entirely in a private capacity. According to the talking-points memo, Comey also withheld from Congress the fact that Steele had been fired by the FBI for leaking information to the media. Instead of sharing that critical information about his reliability and credibility – to say nothing of his political and financial motivations – Comey hid the truth about his star informant from the nation's top lawmakers.

 

"If asked about CROWN/Steele" during the briefing, the memo anticipated, Comey was to tell lawmakers only that "CROWN, a former FBI CHS, is a former friendly foreign intelligence service employee who reported for about three years, and some of whose reporting has been corroborated."

 

Meanwhile, FBI headquarters officials were duping the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court in similar fashion in order to continue to obtain warrants to spy on Carter Page. They led judges on the secret surveillance court to believe Danchenko was "Russian-based" – and therefore presumably more credible.

 

The official in charge of vetting the Steele dossier at the time – and interviewing him and his primary source Danchenko to corroborate their allegations – was FBI Supervisory Intelligence Analyst Brian Auten. By March 2017, Auten knew the "Russian-based" claim was untrue, and yet he let case agents slip it into two FISA renewal requests targeting Page.

 

Auten seemed to become concerned about the falsehood only when the Senate Judiciary Committee asked to see the Page spy warrants. He then reviewed the FISA applications in advance of Comey briefing the panel on March 15 and raised concerns with then-FBI attorney Kevin Clinesmith, who was assisting with redactions to the documents before sharing them with Congress. Auten wondered in text messages whether a correction should be reported to the court. But no amendment was ever made.

 

Years later, in a closed-door 2020 hearing, Senate Judiciary Committee investigators finally caught up with Auten and asked him about it.

 

"The FISA applications all say that he's Russian-based," then-chief Senate Judiciary Committee investigative counsel Zach Somers pressed Auten. "Do you think that should have been corrected with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court?"

 

Auten said he raised the issue with Clinesmith, who was convicted last year by Durham on charges related to falsifying evidence in the FISA application process. "And what response did you get back?" Somers asked. "I did not get a response back," Auten replied.

Fraud and More Fraud

And so the "Russian-based" fraud lived on through the FISA renewals, which also swore to the court that Danchenko was "truthful and cooperative." (Attempts to reach Auten for comment were unsuccessful. The FBI declined comment.)

 

The five-year statute of limitations for criminal liability related to the invalid FISA applications expires at the end of this month. It has already expired regarding false statement offenses that may have been committed during the March 2017 Gang of Eight briefings.

 

However, legal experts say Durham could bypass the statute by filing conspiracy charges. Some former FBI attorneys and prosecutors believe the special counsel is building a "conspiracy to defraud the government" case against former FBI officials and others.

 

Around the same time, the FBI similarly misled high-ranking officials at the Justice Department.

 

In a March 6, 2017 briefing on the Russiagate probe to acting Attorney General Dana Boente, Comey's deputy Andrew McCabe and counterintelligence official Peter Strzok suggested that Steele's material came from the British government rather than the Clinton campaign by referring to it as "CROWN source reporting," according to handwritten notes taken during the meeting.

 

Strzok falsely suggested to Boente that the probable cause for his opening the Russiagate investigation, codenamed Crossfire Hurricane, included Trump asking Russia during a July 2016 public campaign appearance to find Clinton's 30,000 missing State Department emails she had deleted from a private server. The electronic communication Strzok personally wrote to officially open the investigation made no mention of this incident. What's more, Trump made the sarcastic remark after the date when Strzok stated the FBI determined probable cause.

 

Strzok, who did not respond to requests for comment, spread the same false claim in his book. He recently admitted in a Georgetown University forum he got that detail wrong, while blaming a faulty memory. Strzok was fired by Special Counsel Robert Mueller after the Justice inspector general alerted Mueller to virulently anti-Trump texts he had exchanged with Lisa Page, with whom he was having an illicit affair.

 

During the high-level briefing, Strzok and McCabe shaded other facts to make it seem as if the case against Trump and his advisers were stronger than it was in order to convince the attorney general they had justifiable cause to continue their "sensitive" political investigations. For instance, they told Boente that the secret FISA monitoring of Page's phone and emails was "fruitful," when in fact collections failed to corroborate the dossier allegations against Page.

The next month, Boente approved and signed the third application to surveil the Trump adviser. Carter Page was never charged with a crime. But the year-long surveillance, which didn't end until Sept. 22, 2017, allowed FBI headquarters to potentially monitor the Trump presidency through what is known as "incidental collections" of emails, texts and phone and Skype conversations.

 

On March 20, 2017, Comey went to Capitol Hill and publicly announced for the first time the existence of the FBI's Crossfire Hurricane investigation into Trump and his campaign.

 

"The FBI, as part of our counter-intelligence mission, is investigating the Russian government's efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election, and that includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government, and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia's efforts," Comey testified.

 

The unusual public disclosure of an active investigation opened the floodgates to media hysteria about possible Trump "collusion" with Russia and triggered years of congressional hearings and investigations that dragged Trump figures into countless hours of depositions under subpoena.

 

Two months later, Mueller took over where fired Comey left off and breathed new life into the counterintelligence and criminal investigations. In the end, Mueller found no evidence Trump or any Trump official or associate conspired with any Russians to interfere in the election or conduct other espionage. The case, like the Clinton campaign-funded dossier that inspired it, was a bust.

Ukraine targets Crimea bridges – authorities

The attack did not result in any injuries, the peninsula’s governor has said

 

Ukraine has launched a missile strikeon bridges linking the northern part of Russia’s Crimea Peninsula and Kherson Region, the local authorities have said. They claim that the attack did not result in any casualties, but caused minor damage to infrastructure, adding that preliminary data indicates that the strike used UK-supplied long-range missiles.

 

In a statement on Telegram on Thursday morning, Vladimir Saldo, the acting governor of Kherson Region, said: “The criminalKievregime has conducted abarbaric strike on civilian facilities,” namely, several bridges in the area of the Chongar Peninsula, which serves as one of the few land connections between the peninsula and the mainland.

 

The governor said that preliminary data indicates that the Ukrainianstrike involved UK-supplied Storm Shadow missileswith a range of more than 250km, which has already been used by Kiev to attack civilian facilities in the Russian city of Lugansk.

 

“The road surface on the bridges has been damaged. There areno human casualties,” he wrote. Saldo noted that the bridge would be open for vehicles shortly, adding that traffic between the peninsula and Kherson Region is not disrupted as it has been temporarily diverted to another route.

 

Crimea’s governor, Sergey Aksyonov, confirmed the strike on the Chongar bridge, adding that it did not cause any injuries. He noted that bomb experts are trying to identify the type of the weapon used in the strike, while the emergency services are looking into the damage to the infrastructure.

 

The incident follows a statement by Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, whowarned the day beforethat Ukraine wants to use HIMARS and Storm Shadow missiles to attack Russian territories, including Crimea. He noted that these actionswould “result in immediate strikes against the decision-making centers in the territory of Ukraine.” (The Defense Minister warned them, Kiev didn’t listen, bombing incoming in next couple of days. Russians fulfill their promises!)

 

Last autumn, the Crimean Bridge linking the eastern part of the peninsula with mainland Russia came under a deadly attack, which Moscow said was orchestrated by Kiev’s special services. Russia responded by intensifying its long-range strikes on Ukrainian military and energy infrastructure.

Whereas the allegation that President Donald Trump colluded with Russia to interfere in the 2016 Presidential election has been revealed as false by numerous in-depth investigations, including the recent report by Special Counsel John Durham, which documents how the conspiracy theory was invented, funded, and spread by President’s Trump’s political rivals;

Whereas Representative Adam Schiff, who served as ranking minority member and then Chairman of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence of the House of Representatives (the ‘‘Intelligence Committee’’), occupied positions of extreme trust, affording him access to sensitive intelligence unavailable to most Members of Congress;

Whereas, for years, Representative Schiff abused this trust by alleging he had evidence of collusion that, as is clear from reports by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz, and Special Counsel Durham, never existed;

Whereas, for years, Representative Schiff has spread false accusations that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia;

Whereas, on March 20, 2017, Representative Schiff perpetuated false allegations from the Steele Dossier accusing numerous Trump associates of colluding with Russia into the Congressional Record;

Whereas, once again abusing his privileged access to classified information, Representative Schiff released a memo justifying the accuracy of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant application on Trump associate Carter Page, of which was later found by Inspector General Horowitz to have 17 major mistakes and omissions, provoking FISA Court Presiding Judge Rosemary Collyer to state unequivocally that the Federal Bureau of Investigation ‘‘misled the FISC’’;

Whereas, as ranking minority member and Chairman of the Intelligence Committee, Representative Schiff behaved dishonestly and dishonorably on many other occasions, including by publicly, falsely denying that his staff communicated with a whistleblower to launch the first impeachment of President Trump;

Whereas, as part of his impeachment efforts, during a hearing on September 26, 2019, Representative Schiff misled the public by reading a false retelling of a phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky;

Whereas, on March 28, 2019, every Republican member of the Intelligence Committee signed a letter calling for Representative Schiff’s immediate resignation as Chairman;

Whereas Representative Schiff hindered the ability of the Intelligence Committee to fulfill its oversight responsibilities over the Intelligence Community, an indispensable pillar of our national security; and

Whereas these actions of Representative Schiff misled the American people and brought disrepute upon the House of Representatives: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That–

1) the House of Representatives censures Adam Schiff, Representative of the 30th Congressional District of California, for misleading the American public and for conduct unbecoming of an elected Member of the House of Representatives;

(2) Representative Adam Schiff will forthwith present himself in the well of the House of Representatives for the pronouncement of censure;

(3) Representative Adam Schiff will be censured with the public reading of this resolution by the Speaker; and

Led me to think that with no immunity and all being principles in this still, ongoing conspiracy to bring a coup d'etat against a sitting President that it leaves all of them open and vunerable to the JAG and the UCMJ. EU still intent on confiscating Russian assets – von der Leyen

Brussels is preparing a legal basis for transferring the seized funds to Ukraine, the European Commission president has said

 

The European Commission intends to submit a legal proposal on the transfer of frozen Russian assets to Ukraine before it goes on summer break on July 25, its president, Ursula von der Leyen, told reporters on Wednesday.

 

According to the official, despite earlier reports to the contrary and the legal challenges the measure faces,the commission is intenton finding ways to use the money in question for the restoration of Ukraine.

 

“It is not legally a simple thing, it is very complex. Our experts are working hard on it. But I am deeply convinced, from a political point of view, that it is not possible that whoever committed this devastation and destruction in Ukraine does not contribute to the repair and to the reconstruction. For this reason we are preparing a legal proposal before the summer break,” she told representatives of several European news outlets on the sidelines of the conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine, underway in London.

 

She also mentioned the commission's proposal toEU member-statesto allocate €50 billion($55 billion) in grants and loansas aid to Ukraine in 2024-2027.

 

Brussels froze Russia’s EU-held assets soon after the start of Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine late last February. Last month, the European Commission calculated that a total ofover €200 billionworth of assets belonging to theRussian central bankwere frozen across the bloc, along with some €24.1 billion of assets belonging to sanctioned Russian businessmen and companies.

 

Lawmakers from across the block have been debating the legality of seizing Russian holdings and channeling them to Ukraine for months now, with many pointing out that the EU legal system only allows freezing these assets, not expropriating them.

 

Bloomberg reported earlier this week that members of theEU working groupon Russian assets saw “no credible legal avenue” for their confiscation “on the sole basis of these assets being under EU restrictive measures.”

 

Instead, the lawmakers said theycould opt to use the profits generated from these assetsin EU securities depositories. According to a recent report by Financial Times, one of these depositories, Belgium-based Euroclear, alone generated €734 million in interest on cash balances from Russia-sanctioned assets in the first quarter of 2023.

 

Moscow has repeatedly condemned the EU’s seizure of its assets as theft. While addressing the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin described the measure as “medieval.”

 

(Does the EU realize that Russia will not only do the same, but probably worse if they go forward with legalizing international theft? This precedent opens up every EU country being penalized for theft and who’s to stop Poland from continuously trying to collect reparations from other EU countries. I suspect they release this news once a week to trigger Russia, but they literally could be as stupid as Bidan.)

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday that Moscow’s forces were considering launching a “terror attack” at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, a recurring flash point of concern throughout Russia’s invasion.

“Intelligence services have received information that Russia is considering the scenario of a terrorist act at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant — a terrorist act with the release of radiation. They have prepared everything for this,” Zelensky said in a statement on social media.

Fears for Europe’s biggest nuclear plant, which have persisted throughout Moscow’s Ukraine offensive, have been exacerbated by the destruction of a dam that provided the cooling water for the plant.

The Kremlin rejected Zelensky’s claims that Russian forces could be orchestrating a radiation leak, pointing to a recent visit to the facility by the head of the UN’s nuclear agency.

“This is another lie. There were just contacts with the IAEA at the site — a very high assessment from the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency). They saw everything, everything they wanted to see,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Moscow meanwhile on Thursday announced that UN nuclear chief Rafael Grossi would be arriving in the Russian region of Kaliningrad to meet with the head of Russia’s nuclear agency.

Stars and Dust across Corona Australis

 

Cosmic dust clouds cross a rich field of stars in this telescopic vista near the northern boundary of Corona Australis, the Southern Crown. Part of a sprawling molecular cloud complex this star forming region is a mere 500 light-years away. That's about one third the distance of the more famous stellar nursery known as the Orion Nebula. The 2 degree wide frame would span 15 light-years at the clouds' estimated distance. Mixed with bright nebulosities the dust clouds effectively block light from more distant background stars in the Milky Way and obscure from view embedded stars still in the process of formation. Large dark nebula Bernes 157 is on the left. To its right are a group of pretty reflection nebulae cataloged as NGC 6726, 6727, 6729, and IC 4812. Their characteristic blue color is produced as light from hot stars is reflected by the cosmic dust. The more compact NGC 6729 surrounds young variable star R Coronae Australis. Just below it, filamentary arcs and loops are identified as Herbig Haro objects associated with energetic newborn stars. In fact, at the heart of this area lies the Coronet Cluster, one of the nearest and most active star forming regions.

A teacher at a Catholic summer camp in Italy was banned from working with children after the parish priest discovered his homosexuality on social media, local media reported Wednesday.

The young adult was supposed to have run the camp in Cesena in the northern region of Emilia-Romagna before a photograph of him kissing another male was shown to the priest, reported the local daily Corriere Romagna.

He was informed he would no longer be allowed to teach, but could keep a supervisory role, an offer the young man refused. As he could not be replaced in time, the camp will not be able to open this summer.

“The rules are clear. We can’t give the children at a summer camp the feeling that having a homosexual instructor is normal,” a member of the priest’s staff told the newspaper.

Delta IV Heavy rocket launches US spy satellite on penultimate mission

The NROL-68 mission launched at 5:18 a.m. ET on Thursday (June 22).

 

United Launch Alliance's (ULA) powerful Delta IV Heavy rocket flew for the second-to-last time early Thursday morning (June 22).

 

The Delta IV Heavy lifted off from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Thursday at 5:18 a.m. EDT (0918 GMT), on a mission for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) called NROL-68. The original target date was Wednesday (June 21), but a problem with a ground-system valve forced a one-day delay.

 

ULA cut off the webcast 6 minutes 45 seconds after launch at the request of the National Reconnaissance Office.

 

We know very little about the satellite going up on NROL-68. That's no surprise, given that it's an NRO payload; the agency operates the United States' fleet of spy satellites, whose capabilities and activities tend to be classified.

 

The NROL-68 mission patch — which features a baby dragon, its mother and the moon — offers a few clues, scant though they are.

 

"The baby dragon illustrates the birth of a new satellite system, while the moon with the mother dragon silhouette represent protection of the Five Eyes community, the nation and its allies," NRO officials wrote in a brief mission description. (Five Eyes is an alliance involving the intelligence communities of the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.)

 

"The passage along the bottom, Nusquam Celare, is Latin for 'Nowhere to Hide,'" NRO officials added. "The baby dragon may be science fiction, but NROL-68's impact on national security is real!"

 

NROL-68 is ULA's first mission of 2023 and the 15th Delta IV Heavy launch overall.

 

The burly rocket stands 235 feet (71.6 meters) tall and generates 2.1 million pounds of thrust at liftoff. That's a lot, but it's far from the record. For example, NASA's Space Launch System rocket, which debuted on the successful Artemis 1 moon mission last year, produces 8.8 million pounds of thrust.

 

And SpaceX's giant Starship vehicle — the largest and most powerful rocket ever built — produces about 16.7 million pounds of thrust. But Starship has yet to fly a successful mission; it suffered a few problems during its lone flight to date, an April 20 test launch, and SpaceX ordered the vehicle's destruction high over the Gulf of Mexico.

 

ULA is phasing out both the Delta IV Heavy and its workhorse Atlas V rocket in favor of the new Vulcan Centaur, which is slated to debut later this year. Whereas the Delta IV Heavy has just one more mission to go after Thursday, however, the Atlas V will keep flying for years to come. ULA has booked missions on the veteran rocket through 2029, mostly to build out Amazon's Project Kuiper internet constellation and send Boeing's Starliner astronaut taxi to the International Space Station.

NASA Holds Ribbon Cutting for New Earth Information Center

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson led a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday to showcase a new Earth Information Center at NASA Headquarters in Washington. The center is part physical space and part virtual experience, which shows how NASA data can improve lives in the face of disasters, environmental challenges, and our changing world.

 

The agency also launched its corresponding Earth Information Center website as part of the event. The ribbon cutting ceremony comes ahead of a public opening of the center Monday, June 26.

 

Climate change is a key priority of the Biden-Harris Administration, and NASA plays a critical role in providing data to researchers and others through its extensive Earth-monitoring constellation of satellites. For six decades, NASA satellites, sensors, and scientists have collected observations about our home planet – and at the Earth Information Center, the public can glimpse what this data has taught us about sea level rise, air quality, wildfires, greenhouse gases, energy, and agriculture.

 

“For more than 60 years, NASA has used our vantage point of space to observe Earth with satellites and instruments aboard the International Space Station to collect vital, life-saving data,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “To meet the Biden-Harris Administration’s goal of making this data more understandable, accessible, and usable for everyone, NASA is opening the Earth Information Center. From firefighters that rely on NASA data for wildfire management to farmers who need to know when and where to plant crops, the Earth Information Center will help more people make informed decisions every day.”

 

Whether they live in cities, suburban areas, or on farms, people around the nation can access information to understand our dynamic planet and prepare for impacts of climate change. NASA collects and shares data that can help everyone from coastal including home buyers assessing flood risk; businesses on the Gulf of Mexico and the Great Lakes looking for information on harmful algal blooms; farmers requiring drought and storm information; and county land-use planners assessing wildfire management.

A former employee of OceanGate alleged in a 2018 counterclaim lawsuit that he was fired for raising concerns about quality control and testing of potential flaws in the same experimental submersible that went missing this week with its crew and passengers on an underwater tourist venture to see the wreck of the Titanic.

 

David Lochridge, an engineer and submarine pilot, claimed in his counterclaim against OceanGate that he was hired in 2015 by the Everett, Washington, company to ensure the safety of all crew and clients during the submersible and surface operations of the vessel called Titan. But when he expressed concerns about the design and testing of the minisub's hull, he said he was terminated by the company.

Lochridge alleged that he requested paperwork from the company's engineering director "regarding the viewport test result of the viewport for the Titan," according to the lawsuit.

 

"Lochridge was met with hostility and denied access to the necessary documentation that should have been freely available as a part of his inspection process," the lawsuit said.

 

Because his "verbal communications were ignored," Lochridge claims he wrote a report, saying, "Now is the time to properly address items that pose a safety risk to personnel."

"In the Inspection Report, Lochridge identified numerous issues that posed serious safety concerns, and offered corrective action and recommendations for each," the lawsuit stated. "Lochridge primarily expressed concern regarding the lack of non-destructive testing performed on the hull of the Titan."

According to the suit, on Jan. 19, 2018, a day after he filed his report, Lochridge was called to the meeting with company executives.

 

"At the meeting, Lochridge discovered why he had been denied access to the viewport information from the Engineering department – the viewport at the forward of the submersible was only built to a certified pressure of 1,300 meters, although OceanGate intended to take passengers down to depths of 4,000 meters," the lawsuit said. "The paying passengers would not be aware, and would not be informed, of this experimental design, the lack of non-destructive testing of the hull, or that hazardous flammable materials were being used within the submersible."

White House hawks to stage ‘diplomatic offensive’ against Russia – FT

Jake Sullivan and Victoria Nuland are to meet officials from BRICS and Türkiye to advocate on Kiev’s behalf, according to the newspaper

 

US national security adviser Jake Sullivan will lead a delegation for an informal meeting withofficials from several nationsthat haverefused to toe Washington’s line on Ukraineand have maintained friendly relations with Russia, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.

 

The talks are to take place this weekend inCopenhagen, Denmark, sources told the newspaper. Victoria Nuland, the third most senior official in the State Department and another Russia hawk in the administration of President Joe Biden, will accompany Sullivan, according to the report. A senior EU official will also attend.

 

Coming to hear them out are representatives of =India, Brazil, and South Africa. Officials from Türkiye== may join in, while China could send an observer, sources indicated.

 

All of the nations except Türkiye belong to BRICS, an economic bloc that counts Russia as its fifth member. All have been skeptical of Washington’s narrative about the Ukraine crisis, which claims that the Russian military operation was an unprovoked act of aggression that needs to be severely punished. China has identified NATO’s expansion in Europe as the root cause of the conflict, while Brazil has stated that both Russia and Ukraine can be blamed.

 

Türkiye is a NATO member but has taken a neutral position on the conflict in Ukraine and has served as a mediator between Moscow and Kiev on many occasions.

 

The FT described Washington’s effort in Copenhagen as a “diplomatic offensive” at Kiev’s request, which comes amid Ukraine’s failure to make significant battlefield advances against Russia. I don’t know if that sort of footsie with the truth rises to the level of censure but I can’t say I feel any sorrow for him. Naturally, the censure turned into a circus as Democrats tried to shout it down like the House Speaker had invaded their university and ruined their safe space.

 

After the vote on Wednesday, members could be heard chanting as Schiff moved toward the well, where he stood as Speaker Kevin McCarthy read the adopted resolution aloud.

 

The heckling included shouts of “shame! shame!” while McCarthy repeatedly paused until there was quiet, at one point saying he had time to be there all night.

 

As the speaker read the censure resolution on the floor, the banging of his gavel could barely be heard over Democrats yelling that the move was a “disgrace” and more.

 

As the vote was called, Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., said, “It’s pathetic you’re doing this. Pathetic.”…

 

Schiff was surrounded by fellow Democrats in the chamber, many of whom high-fived and embraced him as he walked towards the well.

Russia claims taking out 13 Western tanks provided to Kiev

Russian forces have destroyed or disabled hundreds of Ukrainianheavy weapon systems, including 13 Western-made main battle tanks, in the 16 days since the startof Kiev’s much-touted counteroffensive, according to a breakdown provided by senior Russian officials.

 

The interim statistics were reported by Nikolay Patrushev, the secretary of the Russian security council, and confirmed by Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu during the body’s meeting on Thursday. The event was chaired by President Vladimir Putin, who asked follow-up questions about the share of Western hardware in the claimed losses.

 

Kiev lost 246 tanks between June 4 and June 21, the officials said. Of the 81 Western tanks that it had, 13 have been knocked out. Russian troops also destroyed 152 infantry fighting vehicles, including 59 Western-made, and 279 field artillery pieces and mortars, including 48 Western-made. Other Ukrainian losses included 443 armored vehicles, 424 regular vehicles, 42 multiple rocket launchers, ten fighter jets, four helicopters and 264 drones, Putin was told.

 

TheUkrainian forceshave been weakened in the fighting and have nowtaken a pause to regroup and replenish their ranks,Shoigu reported. Referencing intercepted Ukrainian communications, he estimated that Kiev has lost over 13,000 troops during the active phase of the counteroffensive.

 

Putin noted that Ukraine’s ability to mobilize new troops was a limiting factor, even as Western nations pledged to provide more weapons to fight against Russia. TheUS and its allies “are indeed prepared to wage the war to the last Ukrainian,” he remarked, summing up Moscow’s assessment of the Western attitude towards the conflict.

 

Western main battle tanks were touted by many commentators as a gamechanger for Ukraine. Kiev started to receive the advanced armor as it was gearing up for its promised counteroffensive this year.

 

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky acknowledged on Wednesday that the operation was not going as well as many supporters of his government had hoped. Ukraine’s army “will advance on the battlefield the way we deem best,” he told the BBC.

Top FBI official made 'chilling' threat to agents questioning Jan. 6 cases, whistleblower claims

"I have witnessed hundreds of Director SVTCs and have never seen a direct threat like that any other time," the whistleblower asserted.

 

A top official with the FBI has filed a protected disclosure to the Office of the Inspector General alleging thatFBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate told the bureau's internal critics of its Jan. 6-related cases to seek employment elsewhereand offered to personally address his subordinates' agents concerns.

 

In a sworn affidavit, the 15-year veteran FBI special agent alleges that, during a routine meeting in February 2021, the deputy director addressed internal concerns that the bureau had not taken the same approach to its investigations into the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot as it did with the 2020 riots and protests related to the death of George Floyd.

 

"He had heard that some employees were contrasting the response to January 6th with the response to the post-George Floyd protests and riots in the summer of 2020," the whistleblower alleges. "DD [Deputy Director] Abbate told the audience that anyone who questions the FBI's response or his decisions regarding the response to January 6th did not belong in the FBI and should find a different job - or something to that effect."

 

Empower Letter to Horowitz

Abbate reportedly went on to insist that the bureau's responses to both matters had been consistent and that it was conducting itself properly.

 

He then, however, "challenged all Special Agents in Charge ('SACs') that if they had an employee that did not agree, the SACs could have that employee call DD Abbate personally and he would set them straight," the affidavit continues.

 

Abbate allegedly made the statement during a routine Secure Video Teleconference (SVTC), the bureau's weekly Wednesday meeting in which the FBI director addresses all of the bureau's divisions. The field office heads, foreign legal attaches, and headquarters divisions typically attend that event, the affidavit states.

 

"I have witnessed hundreds of Director SVTCs and have never seen a direct threat like that any other time," the whistleblower asserted. "It was chilling and personal, communicating clearly that there would be consequences for anyone that questioned his direction."

 

The FBI provided the following statement to Just the News:

 

"Throughout his 27-plus year career, FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate has strongly supported the people and the work of the FBI, treating employees with dignity, compassion, and respect. He continues to proudly serve the American people and the FBI as Deputy Director. Deputy Director Abbate is going nowhere and any suggestion otherwise is baseless."

 

Empower Oversight, a whistleblower advocacy group, wrote to DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz on Wednesday, asking him to "independently corroborate" the whistleblower's allegations. Empower is currently representing other FBI whistleblowers who have alleged political bias within the bureau and acts of retaliation against whistleblowers. Empower stressed that the affiant "does not know and is not associated" with its other clients.

 

One of Empower's clients, Special Agent Stephen Friend had raised concerns about the bureau's alleged manipulation of crime statistics, its treatment of Jan. 6 defendants, and its use of SWAT teams. He further claims that the FBI suspended him for raising concerns about those matters.

 

The organization further wrote to key congressional leaders, asking that they look into the claims and hold Abbate accountable.

 

Empower Letter to Congress

"FBI executives routinely retaliate against employees for expressing concerns about the FBI and the Department of Justice. If they belonged to any other federal law enforcement agency, they would have more effective remedies for these prohibited personnel practices," Empower President Tristan Leavitt wrote. "But at the FBI, legally protected disclosures are not protected in practice. The vast majority of FBI employees don’t have the same civil service protections as other federal employees to obtain review of disciplinary actions taken against them."

 

"The FBI is not a private club for FBI executives to make in their own image," he continued. "It is an extremely important agency that is supposed to enforce the law without prejudice. Empower Oversight respectfully requests that you work swiftly to independently corroborate this information with other witnesses, publicly document your findings, and hold Deputy Director Abbate accountable."

Been taking it for years every day. Also, turmeric. Daughter is a physician and she told me patients that had huge joint/muscle pain had been prescribed drugs to help alleviate the pain and issues. I can assure you, that will not be the case under our leadership.

 

“Just last December, the SEC advanced four proposed rulemakings that will dramatically overhaul our current market structure and how it functions. “Typically, when agencies seek to make meaningful reforms, they do so by advancing one targeted proposal at a time, and by presenting clear and convincing evidence of a problem or failure warranting such a drastic policy change.

 

“In the case of market structure reform proposals under Chair Gensler, the SEC has done neither. “Instead of starting with one surgical proposal and observing its impacts after implementation to assess the need for additional proposals, Chair Gensler and Director Zhu have taken a wrecking ball to every corner of our current equity market structure in one fell swoop. “And they’ve done so without any definite explanation or identifying any systemic market problems or failures. “You might be saying to yourself, ‘well, surely the SEC can point to some economic effects of the proposals that justify such major reforms.’ “Yet again, the SEC comes up short. Throughout its economic analyses of the proposals, the SEC explicitly concedes numerous times that the economic effects of the proposals are unknowable. “If that wasn’t enough, the SEC’s economic analyses are also improperly based on data the SEC itself admits is outdated and inaccurate.

 

“For example, to justify three of the four proposals, the SEC utilizes rule 605 reports, which provide trade execution quality information monthly. At the same time, the SEC staff has acknowledged that these reports have limitations and need reform. “These deficiencies are not limited to the market structure proposals put forward by the Division of Trading and Markets. “The division has authored additional proposals that inexplicably overlap and for which their impacts have been inadequately analyzed. “It is vital the SEC only issues regulations that are absolutely necessary, and to avoid burdening main street investors. That is why I will be reintroducing the ‘SEC Regulatory Accountability Act.’ “This legislation, which has passed in previous Congresses with bipartisan support, will make sure the SEC does not arbitrarily implement unwarranted and complex rules. “My bill would statutorily require the SEC to identify the problem a proposed regulation is seeking to address and conduct a thorough cost-benefit analysis before issuing any regulation. I would urge my colleagues to join me in protecting the capital markets that millions of Americans rely on for financial security and prosperity. “I look forward to partnering with my colleagues on this Subcommittee to ensure U.S. equity markets remain the envy of the world and continue to work on behalf of market participants of all sizes, as well as our constituents trying to save for the American dream.”

Warren Buffett's charitable giving tops $51 billion

 

Warren Buffett has donated another $4.64 billion of Berkshire Hathaway (BRKa.N) stock to five charities, boosting his total giving since 2006 to more than $51 billion.

 

The annual donation made on Wednesday is the 92-year-old Buffett's largest, and consisted of about 13.7 million of Berkshire's Class B shares.

 

Buffett is donating 10.45 million shares to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has received more than $39 billion of Berkshire stock overall.He is also donating 1.05 million shares to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named for his late first wife, and 2.2 million shares split evenly among charities led by his children Howard, Susan and Peter: the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the Sherwood Foundation and the NoVo Foundation.

 

Buffett is gradually giving away nearly all of the fortune he built at Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire, which he has run since 1965.

 

He and Bill Gates also pioneered the Giving Pledge, in which more than 240 people like Michael Bloomberg, Larry Ellison, Carl Icahn, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg committed at least half of their wealth to philanthropy.

 

Buffett has already donated more than half of his Berkshire stock. He still owned more than $112.5 billion, or about 15%, of Berkshire shares following Wednesday's donations.

 

"Nothing extraordinary has occurred at Berkshire: a very long runway, simple and generally sound decisions, the American tailwind and compounding effects produced my current wealth," Buffett said in a statement. "American tailwind" was coined by Buffett in 2019 to describe the United States' ability to build wealth over the long term, even through times of war and financial crisis.

 

Buffett built Berkshire into an approximately $740 billion company through businesses such as the BNSF railroad and Geico car insurance, and stocks such as Apple Inc (AAPL.O).

 

The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation works in reproductive health. The Howard G. Buffett Foundation focuses on alleviating hunger, mitigating conflicts and improving public safety. The Sherwood Foundation supports nonprofits in Nebraska, and the NoVo Foundation has initiatives focused on girls and women.
