Michigan has brought charges against 16 Republicans who acted as fake electors in an effort to hand the stateโ€™s electoral votes to former United States President Donald Trump during the 2020 presidential race.

Attorney General Dana Nessel filed felony charges against the fake electors on Tuesday, accusing them of a scheme to overturn the results, which showed Democrat Joe Biden winning the state.

โ€œThe false electorsโ€™ actions undermined the publicโ€™s faith in the integrity of our elections and, we believe, also plainly violated the laws by which we administer our elections in Michigan,โ€ Nessel said in a statement.

Tuesdayโ€™s announcement represents the first time charges have been levelled against individuals accused of using the political system to help Trump roll back the will of the voters.

The fake electors include prominent political figures in the state, including Kathy Berden, head of the Republican National Committeeโ€™s Michigan chapter, and Marian Sheridan, the grassroots vice chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party.

They stand accused of forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery and conspiracy to commit election forgery. Sentences for those charges can range up to 14 years in prison.

The group allegedly gathered at the stateโ€™s Republican Party headquarters on December 14, 2020, the same day the real electors were set to cast their ballots.

Michigan, a pivotal battleground state, awards 16 Electoral College votes to whichever presidential candidate wins its popular vote โ€” in this case, Biden. Electors are designated to cast those Electoral College votes, in a mostly ceremonial process.

The fake electors, however, signed their names to false documents casting the 16 Electoral College votes for Trump. Those documents were sent to the National Archives and Congress, which then counts the certificates for an official tally.

Michigan was one of seven closely-watched swing states where Republicans signed false certificates in an attempt to award Electoral College votes to Trump and tip the election in his favour.

Tuesdayโ€™s charges, however, underscored the lengths to which Trumpโ€™s allies were willing to go to overturn his loss, based on the false belief the vote had been โ€œriggedโ€ against the Republican leader.

Trump himself perpetuated the allegation that the 2020 election had been stolen through massive fraud, a claim for which there is no evidence.

But that belief remains pervasive among Trumpโ€™s supporters. It fuelled an attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, when a mob attempted to disrupt the certification of the Electoral College votes.

More than 1,000 people have since been charged with crimes related to the Capitol attack.

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump also released a statement saying he is the target of a federal investigation into his role in the January 6 riot.

Spain could be about to be governed by a coalition that includes a far-right party for the first time since the Francisco Franco dictatorship ended in 1975, propelled in part by frustration surrounding a drought and the environmental measures that are in place to ameliorate it.

 

Opinion polls indicate that theconservative Popular Party, led by Alberto Nรบรฑez Feijรณo, has enough support to unseat socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sรกnchez, but will fall short of an outright majority. That leaves Vox โ€” an ultranationalist, anti-immigration and anti-feminist group โ€” the likely kingmaker. (KEK!)

 

Part of the reason Vox has become Spainโ€™s third-biggest party is it has followed another key trend in modern far-right politics: fears that green measures in Spain, which faces chronic droughts, will destroy the agricultural industry. Vox and the Popular Party, which already jointly govern the southwestern Extremadura region, back a controversial plan to legalize and expand water drilling in one of Europeโ€™s most important wetlands, much of which is already arid and lifeless, to fuel the lucrative fruit industry.

 

And now, questions that were once considered resolved,such as the existence of human-made climate change and its likely consequences, are again up for discussion, said Oriol Bartomeus, a politics professor at Barcelonaโ€™s Universidad Autรณnoma.

 

โ€œGlobal warming had gone out of the political debate because it was something that was part of the general consensus โ€” but now itโ€™s becoming more and more an issue of polarization,โ€ he said. โ€œSo, if you are on the right, you are against the ecological transition. Farmers have for decades been draining the aquifer in the Doรฑana area west of Seville in southern Spain, a region which includes the UNESCO-listed Doรฑana National Park, to provide the thousands of gallons of water needed for the local red fruit economy, which involves growing mainly strawberries, raspberries, cranberries and blueberries.

 

It takes an estimated 42 gallons of water to produce just 1 pound of strawberries, according to the ethical consumer guide HEALabel.

Ukraine is losing, on average, 4-5 men to advance 100 meters in its counteroffensive.

Russian forces were well-prepared and were using dense minefields to hinder Ukrainian advancements.

One soldier said that while Ukraine had practiced how to capture trenches, but not holding them.

Ukrainian troops are suffering from deteriorating morale as casualties mount in their grinding counteroffensive to take back territory from Russia, a report says.

 

"Every hundred meters of land we gain means 4-5 infantrymen who have left the ranks โ€“ this is the average loss," an unnamed Ukrainian infantryman told The Kyiv Post.

 

He said that as soon as they attack Russian positions, they use artillery to "hammer our positions from front to back."

 

"As long as we are standing and holding on, we can say there are no losses; there may be some light injuries. As soon as we move forward, there are hefty losses. Up to half a unit for every kilometer we capture," or roughly 0.6 miles, "and it is not a given that we will hold this kilometer later," he said.

 

The soldier, fighting near Russian-occupied Donetsk, told the outlet that his unit had captured and then lost several Russian trenches because Ukraine's armed forces had been training to capture them but had not practiced holding them from counterattacks, he said.

 

A combat medic who requested anonymity told The Kyiv Post that the Russians were given too much advance notice of Ukraine's counteroffensive, which meant they were well-prepared.

 

Russian forces prepared by creating dense minefields, which means Ukraine's forces are moving "at a snail's pace." "Every square inch is mined," he said.

 

He added that many sappers are being killed as they go ahead of the other troops.

 

Along with coming up against mines, Ukrainian soldiers are also facing attacks by booby traps, shell strikes, serial bombs, artillery, and more, the soldier said.

"In one month, we have only advanced one kilometer and a half. We move forward by inches, but I don't think it's worth all the human resources and materiel that we have spent," he said.

 

Despite some cases of deteriorating morale, the soldiers said their units were still willing to carry on attacking.

 

Other units who spoke to the outlet painted a different, more upbeat picture, particularly those fighting around Bakhmut, who said attacks have been victorious and that morale is excellent.

 

While Ukraine is suffering from high casualties, fewer men are being killed than expected because of cautious tactics and high-quality armored vehicles supplied by Ukraine's Western allies, The Times of Londonreported.

The problem for Mr Lauro is that courtroom photographing and broadcasting are banned in federal court under the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure.

CDC Changed Definition Of Breakthrough COVID-19 After Emails About 'Vaccine Failure'

 

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) altered its definition of COVID-19 cases among the vaccinated, leading to a lower number of cases classified as a breakthrough, according to documents obtained by The Epoch Times.

 

The CDC in early 2021 defined the post-vaccination cases as people testing positive seven or more days after receipt of a primary vaccination series, according to one of the documents.

 

The definition was changed on Feb. 2, 2021, to only include cases detected at least 14 days after a primary series, another document shows.

Meta Pushes Airhead Influencers Over Actual News As Priorities Shift

 

Facebook parent Meta is shifting away from current affairs and politics on its social media platforms, and will instead focus on short-form videos and content from influencers vs. news, the Financial Times reports.

 

The decision comes after years of attempting to placate powerful publishers and striking deals with various media organizations. What's more, Meta is currently in a stand-off with the Canadian government over legislation which requires platforms to pay publishers and broadcasters for their content. As a result, Meta announced its decision to remove the news from its feeds in the country, leading to a revolt by over 30 advertisers in Canada who say they'll pull their ads in protest.

 

"The Online News Act is based on the incorrect premise that social media companies benefit unfairly from news content shared on our platforms, when the reverse is true," Meta said, adding that news outlets can use social media to "help their bottom line."

 

Canadian minister of heritage Pablo Rodriguez disagrees, telling the Financial Times that he's "deeply convinced that Googleโ€™s and Facebookโ€™s concerns can be resolved through the regulatory process."

 

"If Facebook truly believes that news has no value, they can say so at the negotiating table. Threats to pull news instead of complying with the laws in our country only highlight the power that platforms hold over news organisations, both big and small," he added.

 

Meta is also assessing whether the Canadian legislation will require it to remove news links and other content on their rapidly imploding Threads app - which is built on the foundation of the popular photo-sharing app Instagram. The app notably prioritizes content posted by creators and friends over hard news or politics.

 

Sandra Matz, associate professor of business at New Yorkโ€™s Columbia Business School, said that Meta appears to be discouraging news and politics from Threads as a business decision to avoid more scandals over misinformation and election denial, and to facilitate moderation.

 

Mark Zuckerberg, Metaโ€™s chief executive, insists Threads will be a โ€œfriendlyโ€ space in contrast to Twitter, which has loosened its moderation since Elon Musk bought the platform for $44bn in October, frustrating some users and advertisers. Five Others Previously Sentenced to Substantial Prison Terms for Participation in the Same Tor-Network-Based Child Pornography Website

 

The former acting director of cyber security at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison today for engaging in a child exploitation enterprise and related charges in connection with his membership in a Tor-network-based child pornography website.

 

Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell of the Justice Departmentโ€™s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Deborah R. Gilg of the District of Nebraska and Special Agent in Charge Thomas R. Metz of the FBIโ€™s Omaha Division made the announcement.

 

โ€œUsing the same technological expertise he employed as Acting Director of Cyber Security at HHS, DeFoggi attempted to sexually exploit children and traffic in child pornography through an anonymous computer network of child predators,โ€ said Assistant Attorney General Caldwell. โ€œBut dangerous criminals cannot be allowed to operate on-line with impunity. Todayโ€™s sentence shows that the Department of Justice will bring criminals and child predators to justice, even when they employ anonymous networks like Tor.โ€

 

โ€œToday's sentence and the others imposed earlier demonstrate that those who exploit children will be aggressively pursued and prosecuted to the full extent of the law,โ€ said U.S. Attorney Gilg. โ€œThose who think they are acting anonymously on the Internet will be found and held accountable.โ€

 

โ€œThe production and distribution of child pornography is one of the most saddening, tragic crimes the FBI investigates,โ€ said Special Agent in Charge Metz. โ€œTodayโ€™s sentencing sends a message to those who advertise, distribute, possess, and trade child pornography that the FBI will look for you, will find you and will make sure you are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.โ€

 

Timothy DeFoggi, 56, formerly of Germantown, Maryland, was convicted on Aug. 26, 2014, following a four-day jury trial before Chief U.S. District Judge Laurie Smith Camp in the District of Nebraska of engaging in a child exploitation enterprise, conspiracy to advertise and distribute child pornography and accessing a computer with intent to view child pornography.

 

According to evidence presented at trial, DeFoggi registered as a member of the Tor-network-based child pornography website on March 2, 2012, and maintained his membership and activity until Dec. 8, 2012, when the website was taken down by the FBI. The websiteโ€™s users utilized advanced technological means in order to undermine law enforcementโ€™s attempts to identify them. The website was accessible only through Tor, an Internet application specifically designed to facilitate anonymous communication. Acting under the cloak of anonymity, users advised others on best practices to prevent detection by law enforcement, including advice about the proper use of encryption software, techniques to hide or password-protect child pornography collections, and programs to remove data from a userโ€™s computer.

 

Through the website, DeFoggi accessed child pornography, solicited child pornography from other members, and exchanged private messages with other members in which he expressed an interest in the violent rape and murder of children. DeFoggi suggested meeting one member in person to fulfill their mutual fantasies to violently rape and murder children.

 

DeFoggi was the sixth individual to be convicted as part of an ongoing investigation targeting three Tor-network-based child pornography websites. The websites were run by a single administrator, Aaron McGrath, who was previously convicted in the District of Nebraska of engaging in a child exploitation enterprise in connection with his administration of the websites. On Jan. 31, 2014, McGrath was sentenced to 20 years in prison by Senior U.S. District Judge Joseph F. Bataillon.

 

Four other members of the same website as DeFoggi were previously convicted and sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge Bataillon in connection with their illegal activity on the site:

 

Jason Flanary, then 42, formerly of Chicago, Illinois, the Philippines, and Guam, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on June 30, 2014.

 

Wesley Cameron, then 22, formerly of Ashford, Alabama, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Oct. 24, 2014.

 

Zackary Austin, 28, formerly of Reno, Nevada, was sentenced to 16 years in prison on Nov. 6, 2014.

 

Charles MacMillan, 29, formerly of Rockville, Maryland, was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Nov. 7, 2014.

Chinese bank executives investigated, arrested amid tightened crackdown on corruption

 

Several senior executives of Chinese banks were put under investigation or arrested over recent weeks as China tightened the fight against corruption in the financial sector, according to the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), the highest internal disciplinary body of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

 

Xie Hongru, former Party chief and former head of the Guangzhou branch of CITIC Bank, was put under investigation on Friday. The same day, Gao Youqing, former Party chief and former head of the Jiangsu branch of the Agricultural Bank of China, was expelled from the Party. On Thursday, He Xingxiang, deputy governor of China Development Bank, was revealed to be under CCDI investigation.

 

The tightened crackdown followed the 10th meeting of the Central Committee for Financial and Economic Affairs held in August, which stressed making financial supervision more digital and intelligent, taking targeted steps to punish financial corruption and to prevent and control financial risks, and accelerating reforms in key areas.

 

Since the beginning of the year, at least eight high-ranking executives from four large state-owned banks have been investigated, with 10 senior executives from Chinese lenders or institutional banks being investigated and punished.

 

Charges include abuse of power, violation in granting loans, embezzlement, and illegal investment and operation.

 

Since the 19th CPC National Congress was held in 2017, the CCDI has filed 93 major financial corruption cases across China's banking and insurance sectors, nearly three times the total number during the five-year period since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, according to Li Xinran, an inspector with the CCDI.
