With Speaker McCarthy's ouster, there has been a cataclysmic implosion in DC in the Lobbyist and the Defense Industrial Complex. Think what you may of the vote, it has done, maybe now start studying how the issue came to pass.

BREAKING: Kevin McCarthy REMOVED as House Speaker

 

Members of the House of Representatives voted on Tuesday to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

 

Members of the House of Representatives voted on Tuesday to oust Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

 

The final tally showed 216 in favor of the motion to vacate, while 210 were opposed.

 

Though McCarthy is no longer third in line to the presidency, he will retain his seat. The House will now have to decide who, if anyone, has enough votes to take over as Speaker.

 

Until then, Rep. Patrick McHenry will act as Speaker Pro-Tempore.

 

Earlier Tuesday, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) stood and repeated his motion to vacate. Rep Tom Cole (R-OK) rose to offer to table that motion. The 15-minute vote saw 208 Republicans vote in favor of McCarthy's leadership, and 11 against. All Democrats were in favor of vacating.

 

Following a 60-minute back and forth between those for and against vacating McCarthy's position, the final vote was taken.

 

Gaetz was able to initiate proceedings on his own thanks to the inclusion of the Jeffersonian Motion in the deal made when McCarthy accepted the Speakership in January. Under the agreement, a single person was permitted to introduce a motion to remove McCarthy if he "goes back on his word or policy agenda."

 

In the months since, McCarthy has been criticized by members of his own party for decisions regarding the appropriation of funds to Ukraine, among other things. He recently drew ire from Gaetz and his crew for teaming up with Democrats to pass a 45-day stopgap resolution to keep the government running, despite there not being a properly passed continuing resolution.

 

"You don't know chaos until you've seen where this Congress and this uniparty is bringing us," the Florida Congressman said in response to suggestions from reporters that removing the Speaker would throw the House into disarray.

 

Others, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Thomas Massie (R-KY), disagreed with Gaetz, and indicated that they would support McCarthy.

 

"I agree with you we need serious change," Greene said, "but there is no plan and no one capable even stepping up. Last time Freedom Caucus threw out a Speaker, we ended up with Paul Ryan who did not support President Trump’s agenda. Nothing can truly change until Trump is back in the WH."

 

Prior to the vote, McCarthy admitted it was "likely" that he would be vacated, noting that if all Democrats sided against him, they would only need five Republican votes.

During yesterday’s House proceedings, Congressman Matt Gaetz officially filed his highly-anticipated Motion to Vacate the Chair against Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

 

As The Gateway Pundit reported, the vote on this Motion to Vacate was brought to the floor today by House Leadership. Members then took fifteen minutes to vote on a motion to Table Gaetz’s Motion to Vacate, which McCarthy and his backers lost by a vote of 208-218. The House then debated the Motion for one hour and proceeded to vote alphabetically by roll call.

 

Here are the eleven Republicans who voted nay to tabling the Motion.

As The Gateway Pundit reported late this morning, McCarthy expressed concern over his ousters, saying, “If five Republicans go with Democrats, then I’m out.”

 

After time was reserved for debate on the topic, Rep. Matt Gaetz and Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) took the lead, arguing for the removal of Speaker McCarthy. Several Representatives from each side of the issue participated in the one-hour debate.

Rep. Tom Cole kicked off the debate, claiming he was part of the vast majority of Republicans who support McCarthy and that the MAGA wing party was trying to “plunge us into chaos.” They’re so out of touch with the Republican voters. Gaetz responded, saying, “Chaos is Speaker McCarthy. Chaos is somebody who we cannot trust with our word.”

 

Jim Jordan Chimed in, saying, “McCarthy has been rock solid on all three…” “We have done the oversight that we were supposed to do…” Jordan said, crediting McCarthy for doing what he simply should as a Republican.

 

Biggs also joined the conversation, commenting on the wide-open border where drugs, criminals, human smugglers, and terrorists come through and speaking about a Cochise County, Arizona deputy who was critically injured in the line of duty two nights ago because of the open border enabled by McCarthy and the”suboptimal” spending path that remains unchanged. Biggs further slammed McCarthy for breaking his promise and failing to “restore fiscal sanity.” Biggs concluded his remarks telling his colleagues, “Bet on the reality… I cannot support the Speaker anymore.”

 

Here are at least six of the brave Republicans who voted for the Motion.

U.S. Navy Quietly Decommissions Two Littoral Combat Ships in One Day

On Friday, the U.S. Navy base in Mayport, Florida hosted a scene rarely encountered since the mass demobilization of the late 1940s: two young warships with long lifetimes ahead were removed from service at the same harbor, on the same day.

 

The Freedom-class littoral combat ships USS Detroit and USS Little Rock are both well under 10 years old, and they are leaving the fleet two decades before the end of their design lifetime. Seven-year-old Detroit decommissioned in a ceremony Friday morning; later that evening, sister ship USS Little Rock - motto "Back with a Vengeance" - decommissioned in another ceremony nearby. The now-surplus Little Rock is only six years old and is headed to Philadelphia for layup, possibly for a future foreign military sale, according to local media.

 

Unlike most decommissioning ceremonies, the events were completed without an official readout or a photo release, though USS Detroit's crew memorialized the occasion on their Facebook page.

 

Both vessels were deployed until a few days before their back-to-back decommissionings. In service, Little Rock avoided the high-profile mechanical breakdowns associated with the Freedom-variant LCS. USS Detroit was not so lucky: she encountered problems during a deployment in 2020 caused by the class' well-publicized combining gear defect.

 

The U.S. Navy wants to offload all nine of its early-generation Freedom-class LCS vessels, which have high maintenance and operating costs but limited lethality and survivability, especially in a high-end fight. After early disappointments with the ship's maintainability and extended delays in the development of its multipurpose "mission packages," the Navy assigned the Freedom-class permanently to sub-hunting; however, the third-party sonar package for its ASW mission was canceled in 2022 after further developmental delays. According to then-Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday, the small warships are "as noisy as an aircraft carrier" - an inbuilt challenge for sensitive ASW sonar systems.

 

Without a working sonar, the Navy decided that it didn't need the early Freedom-class vessels for sub-hunting either. In 2022, the service proposed early retirement for every commissioned vessel of the type then in service, a total of nine hulls. Congress approved decommissioning for four, including Little Rock and Detroit. Each ship cost approximately $350 million to build.

 

The Navy continues to take delivery of additional new Freedom-class hulls while awaiting the arrival of the Constitution-class frigate. The final three Freedom-class vessels in the series have all been launched and are in various stages of fitting out.

The House of Representatives shall chuse their Speaker and other Officers;and shall have the sole Power of Impeachment.

 

The constitution does not say anything about requirements for the position of House Speaker. Could be Joe-Blow off the street if they want.

Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom reportedly forgot his passport and could not travel to a summit in Kiev

 

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom forgot his passport and could not enter Ukraine for an EU Council summit in Kiev, Austrian newspaper Die Presse reported on Monday.Several European ministers skipped the meeting, which saw the bloc offer “solidarity” – but no new military aid – to Ukraine.

 

Without his passport, Billstrom was forbidden from crossing the Poland-Ukraine border on Monday for a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Kiev later that day, Die Presse reported, citing diplomatic sources.

 

Billstrom missed out on an eight-hour train journey to the Ukrainian capital for a largely symbolic gathering. Although the summit was historic in that it marked the first time that the EU Council has ever met outside of the union’s borders, it delivered little in the way of concrete assistance for Ukraine.

 

In a statement after the gathering, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell announced that member states would attempt to agree on a €5 billion ($5.2 billion) arms package for Ukraine next year, and would contribute €50 billion in economic aid,if internal disagreements within the bloc can be overcome.

In the meantime, the summit “sent a strong message of solidarity and support to Ukraine,” Borrell said.

 

Billstrom was not the only foreign minister to skip the meeting. Polish FM Zbigniew Rau sent his deputy, Wojciech Gerwel, in his place, telling Polish media that an ongoing spat betweenWarsaw and Kiev over grain imports had “shaken” the trust between the formerly close partners.

 

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto also sent a deputy in his place. Budapest has forbidden the transfer of weapons to Ukraine via Hungarian territory, has repeatedly called for a ceasefire and peace deal between Moscow and Kiev, and opposes economic sanctions on Russia. Hungary has also maintained its veto on a €500 million arms package for Kiev since May.

 

“The more weapons we supply – the more people will die, the longer the war will continue and the greater the destruction will be. And the more sanctions packages we adopt, the more we destroy European competitiveness,” Szijjarto told the Hungarian newspaper Magyar Nemzet on Tuesday.

Latvian Foreign Minister Krisjanis Kariņs also missed Monday’s summit due to illness.

EU state warns of ‘difficult’ relations with Ukraine

Poland has no desire to meet Kiev’s “expectations,” government spokesman Piotr Muller has said

 

Poland will not sacrifice its national interests for Ukraine, government spokesman Piotr Muller told Polish Radio on Tuesday, commenting on the ongoing row between the two neighbors over grain exports. Relations between Kiev and Warsaw will not necessarily be “bad,” but they are likely to be “difficult” in the months to come, he added.

 

“We know it perfectly well that Ukraine … has its own economic interests, including in the field of agriculture,” Muller said, adding that Polish officials “will not be able and do not want to meet these expectations of Ukraine.”

 

“We represent the Polish government, not the Ukrainian one,” the spokesman stated. Over the past months, Kiev and Warsaw have been locked in a dispute over Ukrainian agricultural exports, which also resulted in what has now become a diplomatic row.

 

The EU previously suspended tariffs on Ukrainian exports in a bid to support Kiev in its conflict with Moscow. The move made the farmers in highly regulated markets in neighboring countries unable to compete with cheap corn, wheat, and sunflower oil from Ukraine. Brussels then banned imports of the goods but allowed them to transit through Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania. When the EU moratorium expired in mid-September, however, the four nations decided to extend it at the national level, a move to which Kiev responded by filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization. President Vladimir Zelensky accused the four countries of supporting Russia.

 

On Tuesday, Muller denied that Warsaw might freeze diplomatic relations with Kiev altogether but admittedthat the coming months are likely to be “difficult” for the two nations. He also branded “some diplomatic gestures” and statements made by Ukraine as “inappropriate.” These concerns have been relayed to Kiev “directly,” he added.

 

On Monday,Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau warned that a “titanic effort” would be needed to mend the ties between the two nations, adding that the Poles’ trust in Ukraine had been “shaken” by Ukraine’s WTO complaint and Zelensky’s words at the UN General Assembly.

 

Rau also told the Polsat broadcaster that he snubbed an EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Kiev on Monday to draw attention to a “period of downturn” in relations with Ukraine. Muller downplayed the incident by arguing that no “far-reaching conclusions” should be drawn from it and maintained that the two neighbors continue to communicate on a daily basis.

I am doing a little digging on ARPA. It is the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (not to be confused with the entity now know as DARPA pic related).

Cargill Faces Brazil Criminal Probe Over Amazon River Port Project

SAO PAULO, Oct 3 (Reuters) – Brazilian federal prosecutors are investigating transactions involving grains trader Cargill and a Brazilian partner after they found “irregularities” in the acquisition of disputed land where the U.S. company plans to build a massive river port in the Amazon rainforest.

 

A spokesperson for the federal prosecutors’ office in Para state said they opened the criminal investigation after two prosecutors drafted a July memo, seen by Reuters, questioning the legality of the transaction due to suspected anomalies in the paperwork. The progress of the criminal probe remains confidential.

 

“The chain of ownership of private land transfers, presented by the companies to substantiate the legality of the purchase and sale … showed signs of being completely precarious and lacking minimum requirements to be considered legal,” wrote prosecutors in the memo, first reported by news website Sumauma on Monday.

 

A Cargill spokesperson said the investigation was a “surprise,” adding the trader obtained legal use and possession of a plot of land in Abaetetuba, Para state, where it is evaluating the feasibility of building a grain export terminal.

 

Brazilian firm Brick Consultoria em Gestao Limitada, which transferred the land to Cargill at an unspecified date according to prosecutors, did not reply to requests for comment.

 

In 2017, Cargill announced plans to invest in a new $178 million port at Abaetetuba, where it aims to eventually move some 9 million metric tons of grains annually from barges to cargo ships for export.

 

However, families in the area where Cargill plans to build the port say federal land reform agency INCRA set aside part of the land for them in 2005, denominating it the Santo Afonso Agroextractivist Settlement Area, according to court documents.

 

The prosecutors said INCRA and the Para federal heritage agency (SPU) should have stopped the sale and their officials should be probed too for failing to do so.

 

INCRA and SPU did not reply to requests for comment.

 

Even before the criminal probe, the federal prosecutors in Para had requested a court order suspending the river port project, citing evidence that the area destined for its use was obtained illegally “through land grabbing.”

 

A judge has still not ruled on that request.

 

Cargill, which runs three other river ports in the Amazon, said its environmental impact studies for the port are awaiting analysis by state environmental officials for a preliminary license.

 

“We have not and will not build a terminal until all required permits are in place and we have consulted with local communities,” Cargill said in a written statement.

why not, The court cases perhaps because I am wondering if he is a member of congress can he legally be prosecuted or is he now protected. If that is the case then how does the evidence get introduced because the cases were how I always though the evidence was getting in. At least 21 dead after coach veers off overpass near Venice

At least 21 people have died and 18 were injured after a tourist coach crashed off an overpass near Venice in northern Italy.

 

The coach was carrying a group of tourists who were returning to a campsite in Marghera after spending the day in Venice, according to reports in the Italian media.

 

Officials said the vehicle fell 30 metres (98 feet) on to electricity lines and caught fire at about 7.45 pm local time.

 

Those on board included Ukrainian, German and French citizens, according to Venice prefect Michele Di Bari. Two of the dead were children. The Italian driver, aged 40, was also killed, Di Bari said.

 

“The bus is totally crushed. The firefighters had difficulty getting a lot of the bodies out,” Di Bari told Sky Italia television.

 

Four of the injured were in serious condition, said Renato Boraso, a Venice city official.

 

The coach veered off the road in Mestre and landed close to railway lines where it caught fire, TGCom24 reported.

 

Italy’s interior minister, Matteo Piantedosi, said the bus “flew 30 metres”.

 

“It seems that the aggravating factor of the scenario was determined by the fact that it [the bus] was powered by methane, therefore the fire developed quickly,” he told TG1.

 

Mestre is connected to Venice by a bridge. The cause of the incident is unclear.

 

“It’s an apocalyptic scene. I am speechless,” Venice’s mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, posted on X, formerly Twitter.

 

Sky Italia reported that 18 bodies had so far been dragged from the wreckage after the coach caught fire, with numerous others injured.

 

“There are many deaths, too many,” the fire service told TGCom24.

 

The Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, expressed her “deepest condolences for the serious accident that occurred in Mestre”.

 

“Our thoughts go out to the victims and their family and friends,” she said.

 

The coach had reportedly been privately hired by a campsite for its guests.

 

“I heard heavy braking, I thought it was a train,” one witness, called Leonardo, told LaPresse news agency. “Then I heard a thud. I was alarmed and outside I saw smoke and heard people screaming for help.”

 

He then rushed to the scene. “As I reached the bus, the screams turned into a blood-curdling silence,” he said. “I wanted to help but was stopped by a friend and a policewoman, because the bus was still on fire and at risk of explosion.”

 

European leaders sent their condolences.

 

“Our thoughts are this evening are with the Italian people, the families and loved ones of the victims of this terrible tragedy,” said the French president, Emmanuel Macron.

 

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, expressed her condolences to the families of the victims and those injured, and her thoughts to Italy’s leaders in what she described as a “moment of great pain”.

 

Charles Michel, the European council president said: “I am deeply saddened by the terrible bus accident in Mestre this evening.”

Russia charges Ukrainian commanders with terrorism

Spy chief Kirill Budanov and three others have been accused of launching drone attacks on civilian targets in Russia

 

The Russian Investigative Committee has identified four senior Ukrainian military officials as the masterminds of over 100 “terrorist attacks” involving drones targeting civilian infrastructure.

 

In a statement on Tuesday, the agency said it has collected enough evidence to charge the four commanders in absentia with terrorism-related crimes. Russia will seek the arrests of the suspects, it said.

 

The committee named Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kirill Budanov, the commanders of the Air Force and the Navy, Nikolay Oleshchuk and Aleksey Neizhapa, as well as the commander of the 383rd drone regiment of the Air Force, Sergey Purdenyuk, as the culprits. Their alleged offenses took place between April 2022 and September 2023.

 

Russian officials regularly accuse Kiev of launching fixed-wing kamikaze drones at targets inside Russia. Senior Ukrainian officials publicly call those drones “unidentified,” but do little to deny their country’s responsibility for the attacks.

 

The semi-secret drone program was detailed in August by the British magazine The Economist. It explained how competing drone developers sometimes conduct operations that “appear to be PR projects designed to bring a prototype to the attention of procurement bosses, rather than having military value.”

 

There is also an aspect of psychological warfare in delivering “headline-making strikes” on civilian targets such as Moscow’s financial center, the article said.

 

Budanov, who is arguably the most media-engaged official among the four Ukrainians charged, told the same outlet last month that his agency sought to disrupt the Russian economy, including by forcing airports in Moscow and St. Petersburg to close during drone raids. He claimed the strikes caused “zero” civilian casualties in Russia, contrary to local reports.

 

In May, the spy chief acknowledged that his agency was involved in assassinations of Russian public figures.

I am doing a little digging on ARPA. It is the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (not to be confused with the entity now know as DARPA pic related).

US ‘failing’ at life expectancy – WaPo

Chronic diseases kill more middle-aged Americans than opioids or guns, research has shown

 

The US is dead last among “peer countries” in terms of life expectancy for its population, the Washington Post reported on Tuesday. Months of research and interviews have revealed a widespread problem with obesity, cancer, heart conditions, and diabetes, as well as a growing gap between poor and wealthy Americans.

 

“Among wealthy nations, the United States in recent decades went from the middle of the pack to being an outlier. And it continues to fall further and further behind,” according to the Post.

 

American life expectancy peaked at 78.9 years in 2014, the same year the Affordable Care Act – also known as ‘Obamacare’ – fully went into effect. It has been declining ever since. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of 2021 it was at 76.4 years. (WAPO says the quiet part out loud, the ACA was intended to destroy our health system, kill people and it has. As far as “Affordable” it’s never been affordable.)

 

The Post reporters looked at county-level death records over the past five decades, finding the largest increase in excess deaths among the 35-64 demographic. In that group, chronic diseases kill twice as many Americans as “all the [drug] overdoses, homicides, suicides and car accidents combined.”

 

Heart disease, cancer, diabetes, liver failure, and other chronic ailments are the main culprits. Cases of breast, thyroid and colorectal cancer are “mysteriously” rising among Americans under 50. Meanwhile, almost 42% of adult Americans are obese, compared to 11.6% in 1990.

 

Medical professionals and scholars interviewed by the Post blamed a variety of factors, from lack of preventive care and focus on treatment, to racism. They said advances in medicine, nutrition, and technology have been “overwhelmed by poverty, racism, distrust of the medical system, fracturing of social networks and unhealthy diets built around highly processed food.”

 

While the US medical system is great at treating diseases, “growing healthy people to begin with, we’re the worst in the world,” according to William Cooke, a doctor in Austin, Indiana.

 

Elena Marks, a senior health policy fellow at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, argued that the US has built a “health industrial complex” that costs trillions of dollars but focuses on treatment.

 

“Eighty-plus percent of health outcomes are determined by nonmedical factors,” said Marks, who used to be the health and environmental policy director for the city of Houston in Texas.

 

There is a major “wealth gap” in life expectancy, according to the Post. In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the poorest Americans were 61% more likely to die than the richest ones, and had “far lower” life expectancy than poor people in comparable countries. While wealthy Americans enjoyed longer lives on average, they too lagged behind their counterparts in Canada, France, or Japan.

 

The Post also highlighted the racial disparities in life expectancy, with Native Americans coming in dead last at 65 and Asian-Americans leading at 84. Meanwhile, Hispanics were at 78, whites at 76, and African-Americans at 71.
