To ease the housing crisis, White House Opens $45 Billion in Federal Funds to Convert Offices Into Homes

 

Taking aim at the nationโ€™s housing crisis, the White House kicked off a multiagency push on Friday to help real-estate developers convert more office buildings emptied by the pandemic into affordable housing.

 

The initiative aims to harness $35 billion in low-cost loans already available through the Transportation Department to fund housing developments near transit hubs, folding the initiative into the Biden administrationโ€™s clean-energy push.

 

It also opens up additional funding sources and tax incentives and offers a new guide to 20 federal programs that developers can tap and that offers technical assistance in what can be tricky and expensive conversions.

 

A third part of the program will see the federal government draw up a public list of buildings it owns that could be made available for sale to help bolster development.

 

The federal government owns about 1,500 office buildings nationally and had leases on almost 200 million square feet of additional space as of April, according to Barclays analysts, who said in a recent report that much of that office space was underused.

In terms of heraldic tradition, insignia changes over time created the situation of silver outranking gold. Beginning in 1780, general officer rank was designated by silver stars.[2] Beginning in the 1830s, colonels wore silver eagles, with the color likely chosen because general officers already wore silver.[2] Infantry officers wore silver epaulettes, while other branches wore gold, and their rank insignia was the opposite color of their epaulettes, so Infantry first lieutenants and captains wore gold bars.[2] All second lieutenants wore epaulettes with no insignia.[2]

 

During the American Civil War, all lieutenant colonels were directed to wear a silver oak leaf with gold braid on the epaulette, and all majors a gold leaf with silver braid.[2] In 1872, the army began to use shoulder knots instead of epaulettes.[2] Since generals, colonels, and lieutenant colonels already wore silver, changing the insignia of first lieutenants and captains from gold to silver was logical.[2] Since majors already wore gold oak leaves, maintaining the current policy was also logical.[2] Shoulder knots with no insignia designated second lieutenants.[2] By World War I, metal collar insignia was regularly used to designate officers, requiring a way to differentiate between second lieutenants and privates; since silver bars already designated first lieutenants, the army opted to use gold for second lieutenants.

Eleven people have been arrested in Georgia on a variety of charges connected to online solicitation of juveniles for sex

 

Eleven people were arrested in Georgia on a variety of charges connected to online solicitation of juveniles for sex, and five other suspects were being sought, authorities said Monday.

 

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said the list of those arrested included a 33-year-old man with a Lawrenceville address who allegedly claimed to be a missionary from Guatemala selling bibles. Another suspect, from Lilburn, was convicted in 2014 in Florida on charges including using a computer to lure a child into sexual conduct.

 

The arrests were made during a three-day operation that included the Forsyth sheriff and district attorney offices, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Alpharetta police and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

 

The office said a similar operation in 2019 led to arrests of 24 people, all of whom pleaded guilty or were found guilty.

Halloween curfew to be enforced for sex offenders in South Carolina

 

The South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services (SCDPPPS) will again enforce a statewide curfew for some registered sex offenders on Halloween.

 

The curfew will be in place from 5:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31, according to officials. It applies any person on probation, parole, or another form of community supervision for a sex offense whose crime is against a child, according to officials.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has removed Chaya Raichik, a conservative influencer who runs a web of โ€˜Libs of TikTokโ€™ social media accounts, from its list of extremists. Raichik, who is herself Jewish, said the move came in response to weeks of legal threats.

 

โ€œThe ADL finally caved after immense pressure and threats of legal action and REMOVED my name from their Glossary of Extremism!โ€ the activist wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.

 

โ€œJust goes to show that the ADL knows Iโ€™m not a violent extremist. The decision to put me on their 'Glossary of Extremism' was all political theater,โ€ Raichik wrote, describing ADL as โ€œa propaganda tool of the radical Left.โ€

Raichik had previously given the group a deadline of October 31 to remove her name and accompanying profile, arguing that her inclusion in the list alongside โ€œterroristโ€ groups like Hamas amounted to defamation.

 

In an op-ed for Human Events last month, she claimed she was being unfairly targeted for โ€œspeaking out against wokeness, far-left indoctrination of children, and the medical mutilation of minors under the guise of gender ideology.โ€

 

Raichikโ€™s name appeared on the ADLโ€™s blacklist last September, in response to her viral exposรฉ on Boston Childrenโ€™s Hospital and other prestigious medical institutions advertising and performing transgender surgeries on minors

 

The ADLโ€™s profile of Raichik accused her of โ€œattempts to generate outrage and stoke anti-LGBTQ+ hostility by reposting selected out-of-context social media content created by LGBTQ+ people and liberals,โ€ claiming the accounts whose content she reposts without comment are โ€œfrequent targets of harassment, threats and violence.โ€

 

Childrenโ€™s National Hospital in Washington, DC was reportedly deluged with threats after Raichik posted audio of a phone call in which hospital staff told her they perform โ€œgender-affirming hysterectomiesโ€ on kids aged 16 and younger, according to the Washington Post. The hospital would later deny offering such procedures.

 

X owner Elon Musk claimed last month that the ADL was pressuring his platform to shut down Raichikโ€™s accounts and teased a โ€œgiant data dumpโ€ of internal communications between the advocacy group and X.

 

The billionaire had also threatened to sue the ADL, accusing the group of โ€œtrying to killโ€ X by burying it โ€“ and by extension Musk himself โ€“ in false allegations of anti-Semitism. Companies were being directly pressured by the group to pull their ads from the platform, he said.

 

ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt denied the allegations even as he admitted to asking corporations to โ€œpauseโ€ their ads on X following Muskโ€™s acquisition of the platform last year. Musk and Greenblatt appeared to bury the hatchet earlier this month, when the ADL released a statement suggesting it was โ€œpreparingโ€ to return to advertising on X in order to โ€œbring our important message on fighting hate to X and its users.โ€

On October 7, however, when thousands of Hamas rockets were launched, Site 512 saw nothing โ€” because it is focused on Iran, more than 700 miles away.

 

The U.S. Army is quietly moving ahead with construction at Site 512, a classified base perched atop Mt. Har Qeren in the Negev, to include what government records describe as a โ€œlife support facilityโ€: military speak for barracks-like structures for personnel.

 

Though President Joe Biden and the White House insist that there are no plans to send U.S. troops to Israel amid its war on Hamas, a secret U.S. military presence in Israel already exists. And the government contracts and budget documents show it is evidently growing.

 

The $35.8 million U.S. troop facility, not publicly announced or previously reported, was obliquely referenced in an August 2 contract announcement by the Pentagon. Though the Defense Department has taken pains to obscure the siteโ€™s true nature โ€” describing it in other records merely as a โ€œclassified worldwideโ€ project โ€” budget documents reviewed by The Intercept reveal that it is part of Site 512. (The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)

Leaked Document Shows Israeli Govt 'Option' To Ethnically Cleanse Gaza

 

Israeli culture magazine Mekovit on Saturday published a leaked document issued by Israelโ€™s Ministry of Intelligence recommending the occupation of Gaza and total transfer of its 2.3 million inhabitants to Egyptโ€™s Sinai Peninsula.

 

The document, issued on October 13, identifies a plan to transfer all residents of the Gaza Strip to North Sinai as the preferred option among three alternatives regarding the future of the Palestinians in Gaza at the end of the current war between Israel and the Hamas-led Palestinian resistance.

 

The document recommends that Israel evacuate the Gazan population to Sinai during the war, establish tent cities and new cities in northern Sinai to accommodate the deported population, and then create a closed security zone stretching several kilometers inside Egypt. The deported Palestinians would not be allowed to return to any areas near the Israeli border.

 

The existence of the document does not necessarily indicate that its recommendations are being implemented by Israelโ€™s security establishment. The Ministry of Intelligence, headed by Gila Gamliel of the Likud party, does not control any of Israelโ€™s intelligence agencies, but independently prepares studies and policy papers, which are distributed for consideration by the government and its security bodies.

Colorado lawyers seeking to disqualify former President Donald Trump from running for the White House again argued on Monday that his role in the January 2021 assault on the U.S. Capitol runs afoul of the Constitutionโ€™s insurrection clause, opening a hearing that could break new ground in constitutional law.

 

The case will pivot on whether the Jan. 6 attack meets the meaning of โ€œinsurrectionโ€ in the 14th Amendment. It will also hinge on whether Trumpโ€™s action meets the definition of โ€œengagingโ€ and whether the rarely used provision was meant to apply to the presidency.

 

Trumpโ€™s lawyers contend the former president was simply exercising his free speech rights to warn about election results he did not believe were legitimate. They noted cases where the congressional authors of Section Three declined to use it more than a century ago against people who only rhetorically backed the confederacy.

 

His lawyers said none of the issues are simple in a provision of the Constitution that hasnโ€™t been used in 150 years. In court filings, they said the insurrection clause was never meant to apply to the office of president, which is not mentioned in the text, unlike โ€œSenator or Representative in Congressโ€ and โ€œelector of President and Vice President.โ€
