Former Pittsburgh Penguins player dies after his throat was slashed by a skate in a 'freak accident' during a game

 

A US ice hockey player died after his throat was cut by a skate during a cup match on Saturday.

 

Adam Johnson, 29, was playing for the UK's Nottingham Panthers against the Sheffield Steelers when he was struck in the neck with the blade of an ice skate.

 

In a Facebook post, his mother, Kari Johnson, said she had "lost half of my heart" as it was confirmed that her son had died.

 

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the Panthers organization wrote that it was "truly devastated" to announce that Johnson had died following the "freak accident."

 

"The Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam's family, his partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time," it said. "Adam, our number 47, was not only an outstanding ice hockey player, but also a great teammate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him."

 

The Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) confirmed that it had postponed all games on Sunday following the "deeply upsetting news."

 

Many of the 8,000 spectators in attendance were reportedly left traumatized by the "freak accident" at the Utilita Arena Sheffield.

 

One X user wrote that it was "undoubtedly the worst thing I've ever seen happen."

 

"I can't stop thinking about everyone who's been traumatized by what happened, particularly those whose lives have changed in an instant," she added in a later post.

 

Another user said it was the "stuff of nightmares."

 

The incident appeared to happen as a Sheffield Steelers' player tried to tackle one of Johnson's teammates, the MailOnline reported.

 

Protective screens were brought out onto the ice and put up around Johnson after the game was stopped.

 

Johnson had previously played 13 games for the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins over the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.

 

He also played two collegiate seasons at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Lionel Walter Rothschild was the 'Lord Rothschild' to whom Balfour addressed his 1917 proposal regarding the establishment of a Jewish state.

 

On November 2, 1917, the British Government expressed its sympathy with Jewish Zionist aspirations and announced that it would use its “best endeavours” to facilitate “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people”. The announcement came in a letter from Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Lionel Walter, 2nd Lord Rothschild (1868-1937), the unofficial leader of the British Jewish community. The Balfour agreement became the diplomatic foundation stone of the state of Israel. The origins of the letter had begun in the early twentieth century, when Chaim Weizmann, the leading spokesman for Zionism in Britain began to solicit support among the British people, shortly after he settled in Manchester in 1904.

 

Origins in The First World War

 

Beginning in 1916, the British hoped that in exchange for their support of Zionism, “the Jews” would help to finance the growing expenses of the First World War, which was becoming increasingly burdensome. More importantly, policy-makers in the Foreign Office believed that Jews could be prevailed upon to persuade the United States to join the War. At this time, there were very strong pro-Zionist feelings by many of the political elite and establishment. Many of Britain’s leaders, including Prime Minister David Lloyd George, and Balfour himself, felt for the Jews and their history. These men were deeply religious Christian Zionists. They had grown up on the Bible; the Holy Land was their spiritual home. They believed that modern Zionism would fulfil a divine promise, and re-settle the Jews in the land of their ancient fathers.

 

The text of the letter

 

The Balfour Declaration used deliberately vague language. The term “national home” was chosen in order to minimize the Zionist dream, to make Palestine a Jewish state. The Arabs, whose “civil and religious” (not national and political) rights were not to be prejudiced as the declaration put it, were referred to only as “existing non-Jewish communities”.

 

The Balfour Declaration was ultimately unsuccessful and many commentators place it among similar fruitless schemes. Surprisingly, the British by and large kept their word, and for at least two decades until the outbreak of the Second World War they allowed the Zionist movement to bring hundreds of thousands of Jewish immigrants into Palestine. Jailed Ghislaine Maxwell believes the drugs death of a key prosecution witness ‘significantly’ increases her chances of walking free, sources claim.

 

The former socialite, 61, who is serving 20 years in a US prison after being convicted on sex trafficking charges, is currently appealing against her sentence.

 

It emerged earlier this month that one of four victims who testified against her in court, mother-of-five Carolyn Andriano, had died of a drugs overdose in a Florida hotel room.

 

The 36-year-old suffered a fentanyl and prescription drugs overdose in May, but her death was only made public in recent days.

 

She had claimed to be drug-free when she testified during Maxwell’s 2021 criminal trial.

 

A source said: ‘Carolyn’s death could be hugely significant because if Ghislaine is granted the right to a new trial there will be a huge legal argument about whether Carolyn’s previous testimony is admissible. This has significantly boosted Ghislaine’s chances of gaining her freedom.’

 

While Ms Andriano took the stand anonymously – giving powerful testimony that she was groomed by Maxwell at 14 and abused by paedophile Jeffrey Epstein more than 100 times –she waived her anonymity after the case in an interview with the Daily Mail.

 

She claimed Prince Andrew’s accuser Virginia Roberts told her about the alleged sexual encounter at the time, as well as showing her the infamous photo of the pair at Maxwell’s London home.

 

Andrew reached a reported $12million (£10million) out-of-court settlement with Ms Roberts in a US civil case, but made no admission of liability. He has repeatedly and vehemently denied all charges against him.

 

Maxwell’s lawyers will seek to capitalise on the death of Ms Andriano when her appeal comes to court which could be as early as December.

John Travolta Shares Pizza and a Snuggly Nap With His Son’s Dog Peanut

 

The actor enjoyed some sweet moments with the rescue pup, who belongs to his youngest child, Ben

 

Lady and the Tramp, meet John Travolta and Peanut.

 

The 69-year-old actor and his son’s pup, Peanut, recently shared a slice of cheese pizza — and the resulting photo looked awfully similar to the Disney film’s iconic spaghetti scene.

 

In the picture, which the Grease star posted on his Instagram Story on Friday, the little dog stood on the table and tugged on a piece of particularly stringy cheese as Travolta took a big bite.

 

The Pulp Fiction actor shared another photo featuring Peanut, who belongs to his son Benjamin, this time a picture of the pair cuddled up together sleeping face-to-face in bed.

 

The snuggly shot is peaceful — especially when compared to a video Travolta shared of himself and the pooch in bed last year.

 

In September 2022, the actor posted a sweet clip of Peanut poking and licking his face repeatedly as he attempted to avoid the slobber.

 

"This is how Ben's dog Peanut wakes me up," he captioned the clip.

 

Peanut is the name Travolta’s son gave the rescue pup, who was formerly known as Mac N Cheese.

 

Travolta adopted the dog for Ben after Jamie Lee Curtis brought her onstage during a segment dedicated to Betty White and her dedication to animal welfare at the 94th Academy Awards in 2022.

 

"They were dumped in a box outside the Avenal Shelter," Chad Atkins, co-founder and executive director of animal rescue Paw Works, told PEOPLE about Peanut, her mom and her three siblings. (The Avenal Animal Shelter is a rural shelter in Avenal, California, that works with Paw Works.)

After Peanut and her family were dumped at the California shelter, Paw Works brought the pets to their facility to help find them foster homes.

 

When the 2022 Oscars approached, Peanut (who was still named Mac N Cheese at the time) was the only member of her family who had yet to find a forever home. She was the pup picked for the big awards show moment, thanks to a bit of luck — and Curtis.

 

A production company for animals was originally going to provide a trained canine for the Oscars segment, but the 64-year-old actress stepped in.

 

"It was actually Jamie Lee Curtis who said, 'No, no, no, we can't do that. Betty White is known for her compassion for four-legged friends, and she was always a huge advocate of animal rescue. It has to be a rescue animal,'" Atkins told PEOPLE.

 

After the Paw Works director sent photos and information about several adoptable puppies in Paw Works’ care, Curtis chose Peanut out of the bunch, and brought her onstage for the In Memoriam segment.

 

Atkins held on to the puppy for the rest of the night, and while several people expressed interest in adopting her, it was Travolta who "eye-locked" with little Peanut, held her for 30 minutes and followed up about adopting her the following day.

 

In March 2022, Travolta made the adoption Instagram-official, sharing a photo of himself, Peanut and the pup’s new owner, his son Ben. “Ben adopted this dog from last [night's] Oscartribute to Betty White,”the actor captioned the photo. “Thank you @curtisleejamie & @pawworks.”

 

"So it's happily ever after for her now," Atkins told PEOPLE of the puppy’s future in April 2022 and — at least according to Travolta's Instagram posts —it has been nothing but pizza, love and snuggles since.

What's happened to the Moon? Within the last day, part of the Moon moved through the Earth's shadow. This happens about once or twice a year, but not every month since the Moon's orbit around the Earth is slightly tilted. Pictured here, the face of a full Hunter's Moon is shown twice from Italy during this partial lunar eclipse. On the left, most of the Moon appears overexposed except for the eclipsed bottom right, which shows some familiar lunar surface details. In contrast, on the right, most of the (same) Moon appears normally exposed, with the exception of the bottom right, which now appears dark. All lunar eclipses are visible from the half of the Earth facing the Moon at the time of the eclipse, but this eclipse was visible specifically from Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, clouds permitting. Jack Smith’s War on Free Speech: Attorney General Garland Should Rein in His Special Counsel

 

Below is my column in The Messenger on the renewed effort of Special Counsel Jack Smith to gag former President Donald Trump. At the same time, Judge Arthur Engoron has repeatedly fined Trump for his public statements about the New York fraud case. Engoron declared this week “Anybody can run for president. I am going to protect my staff.”

 

There is widespread support for barring attacks on court staff and Trump did attack the Court’s clerk in a prior posting. However, most of his comments have been directed at Engoron and his alleged hostility toward Trump. Where to draw this line is the subject of this column. In my view, criticism of the case, the court, and the prosecutor should be treated as protected speech.

 

Here is the column:

 

In 2016, the Supreme Court issued a unanimous opinion overturning a conviction that the Department of Justice (DOJ) had seemed willing to secure at whatever cost to the rule of law. The case involved the prosecution of former governor Bob McDonnell (R-Va.), and the lead DOJ prosecutor was now-special counsel Jack Smith. The court dismissed the “tawdry tales” offered by the DOJ and declared that it was far more concerned with the damage that Smith was causing to the legal system with his virtually limitless interpretation of criminality.

 

The rebuke came to mind this week as Smith continued his unrelenting effort to gag former president Donald Trump before the 2024 election. Some of us have previously denounced the gag order issued by U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan as unconstitutional, but even that order was more limited than what Smith had demanded.

 

Even the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a leading critic of Trump, has come out against Smith’s efforts as an attack on the First Amendment.

 

Undeterred, Smith now wants to reinstate and expand the gag on Trump, citing Trump’s comments about his former chief of staff, Mark Meadows, who reportedly has been given an immunity deal by Smith. (Meadows’ lawyer disputes those reports.)

 

Smith wants to bar Trump from criticizing any witnesses as well as the prosecution and the court. That would include criticisms of former Vice President Mike Pence, currently one of his opponents for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, on his allegations linked to the earlier election.[Update: after this column ran, Pence withdrew from the presidential campaign]

 

Of course, gagging Trump will not materially affect the jury pool in the case. The Smith prosecutions are one of the biggest issues in this election. Moreover, it will not protect potential witnesses from withering criticism in the middle of an election that could turn on the public view of these cases.

 

Indeed, Smith has insisted on trying Trump before the election but now also wants to prevent him from speaking fully about the case before the election. Trump alone would be gagged, even as other politicians and pundits debate the merits of the cases and the countervailing allegations of the weaponization of the criminal justice system.

 

The prior order issued by Judge Chutkan is shockingly vague and overbroad. It bars Trump from “targeting” Smith or his staff or potential witnesses or the “substance of their testimony.” It leaves an undefined and uncertain line as Trump campaigns on what he (and millions of citizens) view as the abuse of the criminal justice system to target President Biden’s main political opponent.

 

Smith would add to the scope and ambiguity of the order in his latest motion. He is arguing that the court should “modify the defendant’s conditions of release … by clarifying that the existing condition barring communication with witnesses about the facts of the case includes indirect messages to witnesses made publicly on social media or in speeches.”

Consider that for a moment: Smith would treat comments about witnesses, such as Meadows or Pence, as an effort to communicate with a witness.

 

Thus, Smith continues to litigate with a sense of utter abandon, showing his signature lack of concern for the implications of his legal arguments. It is the type of blind purpose that leads — as it did in the McDonnell case — to a unanimous ruling against you on an otherwise divided Supreme Court.

 

Ironically, it calls for a level of self-restraint that the trial court itself failed to show in the past. In sentencing a rioter in 2022, Judge Chutkan said that January 6 defendants “were there in fealty, in loyalty, to one man — not to the Constitution.” She added that it was “a blind loyalty to one person who, by the way, remains free to this day.”

 

Despite clearly indicating with her comment that she believed Trump should be jailed (long before he was indicted), Chutkan has refused to recuse herself in this trial.

 

The lack of restraint shown by Smith only magnifies the lack of leadership from Attorney General Merrick Garland. The attorney general has repeatedly said that he would give the special counsel full authority and independence. However, that would not ordinarily mean that the attorney general would reduce himself to a mere pedestrian in this process.

 

This is an example of the ever-shrinking profile of Garland at the Justice Department. He has often told Congress that his knowledge of controversies is limited to what he has read in press accounts. Even beyond the special counsel’s investigations, he seems as proactive as a ficus plant.

 

Yet, this new gag motion presents a far more serious cost to Garland’s passive role at the department. Smith is taking a hatchet to the First Amendment in these motions. In doing so, he is fueling anger over the perception of a weaponized criminal justice system.

 

Smith’s deafening attacks on free speech are matched equally by Garland’s utter silence. The attorney general seems to believe that removing himself entirely from these investigations is more important than guaranteeing that his department does not become the enemy of core constitutional rights.

 

As Smith seems intent on inviting another unanimous Supreme Court opinion against his department, Garland may want to consider voicing a modicum of concern over the cost to free speech in Smith’s efforts to gag Donald Trump.

The Keck II telescope in Hawaii is the first to see the infrared glow on Uranus, caused by hydrogen molecules in the atmosphere becoming excited.

 

Astronomers using archived data from the giant Keck II telescope on Mauna Kea in Hawaii have successfully glimpsed Uranus' infrared aurora for the first time.

 

Like auroras on Earth, those on Uranus are caused when charged particles riding the solar wind interact with the planet's magnetic field and are funneled along magnetic field lines toward the magnetic poles. As they enter Uranus' atmosphere, the charged particles collide with atmospheric molecules, causing those molecules to glow.

 

On Earth, the auroral light comes from collisions with oxygen and nitrogen atoms, with the colors mostly red, green and blue. On Uranus, however, the dominant atmospheric gases are hydrogen and helium at much lower temperatures than on Earth. These result in Uranus' auroral glow being predominantly at ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths.

 

The ultraviolet aurora on Uranus was first seen in 1986 by NASA's Voyager 2 probe, which flew past the planet that year. It's taken nearly 40 years to detect its infrared counterpart.

 

Using data from the Keck II Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRSPEC) taken all the way back in 2006, astronomers led by graduate student Emma Thomas of the University of Leicester in England identified emission lines from the H3+ molecule. H3+ is a trihydrogen cation that contains three protons and only two electrons, meaning it is positively charged.

 

The Uranus emission was the result of molecular hydrogen being ionized and forming H3+ cations following collisions with charged particles, with the emission creating an infrared auroral glow over the northern magnetic pole. In essence, Thomas' team saw Uranus' northern lights.

 

"The temperature of all the gas giant planets, including Uranus, are hundreds of degrees Kelvin/Celsius above what models predict if only warmed by the sun, leaving us with the big question of how these planets are so much hotter than expected," said Thomas in a statement. "One theory suggests the energetic aurora is the cause of this, which generates and pushes heat from the aurora down towards the magnetic equator."

 

Another mystery that the aurorae could help solve is why Uranus' (and Neptune's) magnetic fields are misaligned with their rotational axes by such a large amount — on Uranus the misalignment is 59 degrees. Because auroras trace out the magnetic field structure of a planet, which is coupled to the upper layers (the ionosphere and thermosphere) of the atmosphere, further study could reveal hidden clues as to the origin of this misalignment.

Better known in the scientific community as 12P/Pons-Brooks, the so-called “Devil Comet” was first discovered in 1812 before it was spotted again in 1883, SkyLive reported.

 

It is known as a periodic comet with an orbital period of roughly 71 years.

 

It is also considered one of just roughly 20 other comets with an active ice volcano, according to The British Astronomical Association.

 

Cold volcano comets contain a mix of ice, dust, and gas known as cryomagma, and are surrounded by gas that leaks out from the inside, Live Science reported.

 

The comet will be at its brightest for earthlings next year in mid-April, when it will be roughly 232 million kilometers, or 144,158,116 miles, from Earth.

Wider War Will Bring Inevitable Attempts At Martial Law In America

 

Not long ago at the height of fear over the global pandemic the US underwent a change that many people argued would never happen. For years I have heard people say that authoritarian controls in America are “tinfoil hat conspiracy theory” and doom mongering – All the prepping, all the talk of community organizing, all the guns and the gear and the training were for nothing.

 

Then…the covid agenda hit like a freight train.

 

Our constitutional rights were no longer set in stone, but mere guidelines that government officials could bend or break in the name of “public health safety.” Laws no longer had to be passed through a series of checks and balances; mandates could be implemented as if they were laws without public oversight and enforced unilaterally.

 

There was talk (primarily among Democrats) of severe punishments for people who refused the pointless covid vaccines. They wanted vaccine passports, they wanted prison time for those that spoke publicly against the vax, they wanted people’s jobs taken away, they wanted their children taken away, and there were even plans to build covid detention centers to segregate and lock up “vax deniers.”

 

It boggles the mind, but this was serious debate within the US and it was all triggered in the span of a year. Nearly half the country was willing to abandon the Bill of Rights over a virus with a survival rate of 99.8%. The conspiracy theorists were right all along; our freedoms rest on a razor’s edge and preparing to survive and fight for those freedoms is perfectly rational.

 

Luckily, the covid agenda failed. The mandates were ultimately blocked by red states and in many rural areas they were barely enforced at all. Biden’s vaccine passport attempt was stopped cold by the Supreme Court, but I have long believed that the Supreme Court made this decision exactly because of the level of public resistance. They knew if they pressed the issue, civil war was on the table.

Michael Flynn claimed that Democrats are plotting to "gain greater control over society" by manipulating inflation and attempting to stop the 2022 midterm elections from taking place.

Flynn, a former advisor to Donald Trump, said he's "not convinced" that next year's elections will take place and alleged that Democrats are orchestrating a "financial collapse" of the economy to seize control of the government.

"I believe that our 2022 national elections are at risk, meaning that, you know…I am not convinced that we are going to have national elections in 2022. The reason why I believe that is because the Left does not want to risk losing to the conservative movement that has clearly grown in the country," Flynn said during a recent interview as part of the Reawaken America tour.

Flynn then went on to say that he believes Democrats are attempting to manipulate inflation to higher levels in order to create a "controlled financial depression" to collapse the economy.

"What we're going to see, and this is the plan of the Left, is to basically take over control of the United States of America. Get us to a place where we have just staggering financial problems, and so more control by the federal government must be put into place. More controls by the Federal Reserve, more control by the federal government, meaning that we're going to see more emergency orders from the White House to do certain things—to take dramatic and drastic steps—to put people around the country under control of the federal government more and more and more over the coming year," he added, according to a video shared Saturday by attorney Ron Filipkowski.

The Jewish series of the Historical Archive of the Secretariat of State , Section for Relations with States and International Organizations (ASRS), is part of the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs Fund (AA.EE.SS.), relating to the pontificate of Pius XII – part I (1939-1948).

 

It stands out from the other series of the Fund for not having been classified with the name of a geopolitical entity with which the Holy See establishes and develops diplomatic relations. In fact, it collects requests for help sent by Jews, baptized and otherwise, to Pope Pius XII from all over Europe, after the start of the Nazi-fascist persecutions.

 

Each petition became a file (or dossier) in the name of the primary applicant(s) and was meant for preservation with the archival classification “Ebrei” (Jews). These files were placed in alphabetical order according to the surname in the header, inside a heavier paper folder marked with the corresponding letter of the alphabet.

 

The petitions, which are sometimes submitted by a mediator, could be for obtaining visas or passports for expatriation, asylum, reunification with a family member, release from detention, transfers from one concentration camp to another, news about a deported person, food or clothing, financial support, and spiritual support, among other things. Unfortunately, as can be seen from documentation, many requests could not be accepted due to various types of problems. Other times, the recovery has been successful, but in most cases the outcome remains unknown.

 

Various dossiers, including requests for assistance from Jews, can still be found in other series of the Congregazione degli Affari Ecclesiastici Straordinari Collection's archival records. Following the creation of the “Ebrei” series, certain dossiers were extrapolated from the original series and included in the latter, as shown by the previous archival classification, written in pen in the bottom inner corner of the original folder's back, which has been crossed out and replaced in some instances by the classification “Ebrei”. I will be voting NO on all funding packages for the Ukraine war (as I have from the beginning) and now the Israel war.

 

We have had over 10 MILLION people illegally cross our border since Biden took office and we are over $33 TRILLION dollars in debt with many major problems afflicting Americans.

 

The United States government needs to focus on spending American’s hard earned tax dollars on our own country and needs to serve the American people NOT the rest of the world.

 

I voted YES on both resolutions condemning the attack on Ukraine and the attack on Israel however I will continue to vote NO on spending American’s hard earned tax dollars to fund wars defending foreign country’s borders while our own border is overrun and our own national security is at risk.

 

Also Ukraine and Israel are very different.

 

Ukraine is completely propped up by the US and continues to beg for more US tax dollars while Washington fights it’s proxy war with Russia and Israel is a strong thriving independent nation that prides itself on defending their own people.

 

Also, there is $3.8 billion dollars readily available to Israel in the Defense approps bill and the State and Foreign Ops bill, but Schumer and the Senate have not lifted a finger to pass those bills and Biden has not signed them into law.

 

Our Republican House majority and new Speaker Johnson should refuse any more funding bills until the Senate does it’s job and our border is secure.

 

We’ve done our job in the House and we must keep passing our remaining Approps bills.

 

The Democrat controlled Senate has passed ZERO percent of the budget, while the House has passed over 70% of the budget.

) in fresh exposures, turning to a cream color and then yellow, red, or brown (traces of oxidized Fe3+

) as the exposure is weathered further.[5]

 

As a swelling clay, bentonite has the ability to absorb large quantities of water, which increases its volume by up to a factor of eight.[5] This makes bentonite beds unsuitable for building and road construction. However, the swelling property is used to advantage in drilling mud and groundwater sealants. The montmorillonite / smectite making up bentonite is an aluminium phyllosilicate mineral, which takes the form of microscopic platy grains. These give the clay a very large total surface area, making bentonite a valuable adsorbent. The plates also adhere to each other when wet. This gives the clay a cohesiveness that makes it useful as a binder and as an additive to improve the plasticity of kaolinite clay used for pottery.[6]

 

One of the first findings of bentonite was in the Cretaceous Benton Shale near Rock River, Wyoming. The Fort Benton Group, along with others in stratigraphic succession, was named after Fort Benton, Montana, in the mid-19th century by Fielding Bradford Meek and F. V. As The Gateway Pundit reported on Friday, actor Mathew Perry, best known for his role as Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom Friends, passed away at the age of 54. TMZ reported law enforcement officers found the actor dead inside of his jacuzzi after responding to a call for cardiac arrest. Perry, who was public about his struggles with alcohol and drug addiction, was reportedly found at his own home in a hot tub after law enforcement responded to a call for cardiac arrest around 4 pm local time. No drugs were found at the scene.

Kiev won’t extend gas transit deal with Moscow – Naftogaz

The agreement that allows for deliveries of Russian gas to the EU through Ukrainian territory expires at the end of 2024

 

Ukraine does not plan to extend its gas transit agreement with Russia, Aleksey Chernyshov, the head of state-run energy giant Naftogaz, told US state-funded broadcaster Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) on Sunday. The contract between Naftogaz and Russian state energy major Gazprom expires next year.

 

“This agreement will expire by the end of 2024, and we have no intention to extend it. We will not initiate the continuation of this transit. The contract will end – the transit will stop,” Chernyshov stated.

 

According to the official, Ukraine has grounds to terminate the contract with Russia ahead of schedule, since Gazprom has allegedly paid “no more than 70%” of what it owes for transit. However, Kiev is not scrapping the existing contract immediately because it does not want to leave European consumers without the commodity ahead of winter, Chernyshov said.

 

The transit contract between Gazprom and Naftogaz was last extended in December 2019. The sides agreed to prolong the deal for the period from 2020 through 2024, with the possibility of extension. After Russia’s Nord Stream pipelines were damaged in an act of sabotage last year, the transit route through Ukraine remains the only avenue for Russian gas to reach western and central Europe. However, Gazprom does still supply gas via the TurkStream and Blue Stream pipelines southern and southeastern Europe.

 

While Russian pipeline gas flows to the EU dropped sharply over the past year and a half owing to sanctions over Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine and technical challenges, several EU states continue to greatly depend on Russian supplies. In particular, Hungary has repeatedly declared its intention to continue buying Russian gas, which covers most of its needs. Earlier this week, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said Budapest is ready to discuss alternative avenues for Russian gas imports, for instance the prospect of boosting supplies via TurkStream.

 

“The Turkish Stream pipeline has enormous capacity. Its capacity from Serbia to Hungary is 8.5 billion cubic meters. Thus, in principle… the volume that was secured in our long-term contract [with Gazprom] can also be easily delivered through this pipeline,” he said in an interview with the news agency RIA Novosti. Under the contract with Gazprom, Hungary currently gets 1 bcm of Russian gas through TurkStream and 4.5 bcm via the Ukrainian transit line.

 

After the sharp drop in Russian gas supplies last year, EU gas prices spiked, triggering inflation and a cost-of-living crisis in many member states. Moscow repeatedly warnedthat shunning Russian energy exports only harms the EU’s own people and industries. When reports of Ukraine’s intention to scrap the transit contract first surfaced in mid-summer, RussianDeputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin said the move would “deal a blow” to the EU, while Ukraine would “shoot itself in the foot by losing dividends from transit.”

Oil and natural gas resources in the occupied Palestinian territory could generate hundreds of billions of dollars for development.

Geologists and resources economists have confirmed that the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) lies above sizeable reservoirs of oil and natural gas wealth, in Area C of the West Bank and the Mediterranean coast off the Gaza Strip, according to a recent UNCTAD study.

 

New discoveries of natural gas in the Levant Basin are in the range of 122 trillion cubic foot while recoverable oil is estimated at 1.7 billion barrels, according to the study entitled “The Economic Cost of Occupation for the Palestinian People: The Unrealized Oil and Natural Gas Potential.”

 

This offers an opportunity to distribute and share about US$524 billion among the different parties in the region and promote peace and cooperation among old belligerents, the study notes.

 

Palestinian oil and gas

These funds could finance socioeconomic development in the oPt as part of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

 

However, so far the Palestinian people have been prohibited from exploiting the oil and gas reserves in their own land and water to meet their energy needs and generate fiscal and export revenues.

 

This increases both the opportunity costs and the total costs borne by the Palestinian people as a result of occupation, the study states.

 

Assessing economic cost of occupation

 

In a number of UN General Assembly resolutions, UNCTAD has been asked to assess and report on the economic cost of occupation borne by the Palestinian people.

 

The study focuses on oil and natural gas due to their high value and critical importance in potentially meeting basic Palestinian needs for energy, and fiscal and export revenues.

 

It identifies and assesses existing and potential Palestinian oil and natural gas reserves that could be exploited.

 

Also critical are the new oil and natural gas finds in the Eastern Mediterranean that Israel has begun to exploit for its own benefit, while these resources may be considered shared resources, as the oil and natural gas exist in common pools.

 

“What could be a source of wealth and opportunities could prove disastrous if these common resources are exploited individually and exclusively, without due regard for international law and norms,” the study warns.

 

Costs enormous and escalating

 

Israel’s exploitation of Palestinian natural resources, including oil and natural gas, imposes on the Palestinian people enormous costs that escalate as the occupation remains in effect, the study cautions.

 

It highlights the peculiarities of oil and natural gas as non-renewable resources, arguing that current generations are not necessarily the only owners of these resources that straddle national borders and can thus be jointly owned by multiple states and generations.

 

It also recommends further detailed studies to clearly establish the Palestinian people’s right to their separate natural resources, as well as their rightful share in the common resources collectively owned by several neighbouring states in the region, including Israel.

 

The study comes ahead of the release of UNCTAD’s report on its assistance to the Palestinian people, slated for 10 September.

NUNS used crucifixes to rape girls during decades of abuse by French clergy members - with 330,000 thousand victims covered up.

 

Victims of abuse within France's Catholic Church welcomed a new report which estimated that hundreds of thousands of kids were sexually abused over the past 70 years.

The figure includes abuses committed by some 3,000 priests and an unknown number of other people involved in the church.

 

The report found that nuns used crucifixes to rape girls or force boys to have sex with them.

 

The wrongdoing was covered up by Catholic authorities covered up over decades, according to the president of the commission that issued the report, Jean-Marc Sauvé.

 

Victims welcomed the report as long overdue and the head of the French bishops' conference asked for their forgiveness.

The report said the tally of 330,000 victims includes an estimated 216,000 people abused by priests and other clerics, and the rest by church figures such as scout leaders or camp counselors.

The estimates are based on a broader research by France's National Institute of Health and Medical Research into sexual abuse of children in the country.

The study's authors estimate 80 per cent of the church's victims were boys.

The independent commission urged the church to take strong action. It also called on the Catholic Church to help compensate the victims, notably in cases that are too old to prosecute via French courts.

"We consider the church has a debt towards victims," Sauvé said.

 

Pope Francis expressed his "great sorrow" to the victims "for their wounds" today.

 

Two of those victims, Martine, 73, and Mireille, 71, were sexually assaulted by a priest when they were teenage girls in high school.

"It brings on such terrible thoughts," Martine said. "For me, personally, I had to wait for my parents to die because otherwise she said it was not possible to speak out."

"I think that each victim experienced it as if they were the only one (victim), and thats part of this phenomenon involving control and secrecy," Mireille said.

"We are in a condition of submission… in a mental captivity. So, we follow this person who suddenly takes power over us… We are caught in a spider web."

 

Olivier Savignac, the head of victims association Parler et Revivre (Speak Out and Live Again), contributed to the investigation.

He described being abused at age 13 by the director of a Catholic vacation camp in the south of France who was accused of assaulting several other boys.

"I perceived this priest as someone who was good, a caring person who would not harm me," Savignac said.

"But it was when I found myself on that bed half-naked and he was touching me that I realized something was wrong… Its like gangrene inside the victim's body and the victim's psyche.

The priest eventually was found guilty of child sexual abuse and sentenced in 2018 to three years in prison.

 

The commission worked for two-and-a-half years, listening to victims and witnesses and studying church, court, police and news archives starting from the 1950s.

Sauvé said: "Sometimes church officials did not denounce (the sex abuses) and even exposed children to risks by putting them in contact with predators."

 

The president of the Conference of Bishops of France, Eric de Moulins-Beaufort, said French bishops are appalled at the conclusions of the report.

"I wish on that day to ask for pardon, pardon to each of you," he told the victims.

"No one expected such a high number (of victims) to come out of the survey and that is properly frightening and out of proportion with the perception that we've had on the ground."

Multiple US bases attacked with missiles and drones – media

Militias in Iraq and Syria have defied American warnings and vowed to keep up the strikes

 

Iran-backed militias haveattacked four US bases in Iraq and Syria in a 24-hour period, Al-Mayadeen news reported on Sunday. The attacks came after US forces launched airstrikes against Iranian targets in both countries in an unsuccessful bid to deter the militias.

 

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq announced on Sunday that it had targeted the al-Shaddadi base in eastern Syria on Saturday with two drones, and launched rockets at another American base in the al-Omar oil field near Deir ez-Zor, Lebanon-based news channel Al-Mayadeen reported.

 

The strike on the al-Omar base set off secondary explosions inside the facility, Al-Mayadeen’s sources said. The channel’s sources also said that missiles were fired at an American base in Kharab al-Jir in northeastern Syria.

 

In Iraq, the Islamic Resistance said that its fighters had attacked the US base at al-Tanf, near the Syrian and Jordanian borders.

 

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq is an umbrella term for Iranian- and Hezbollah-linked militias operating in the country. One of these groups, the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades, told Al-Mayadeen that the attacks are a response to US support for Israel’s ongoing air and ground campaign against Gaza.

 

The militias have carried out near-daily strikes on US bases in Iraq and Syria since Hamas fighters launched their surprise attack on Israel on October 7. All of the bases hit on Friday and Saturday had been struck multiple times in the preceding week, prompting the US to launch airstrikes on Thursday against bases in eastern Syria that US President Joe Biden claimed were used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and “affiliated groups.”

 

Following the airstrikes, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby warned that US forces would “not hesitate to take further actions in our own self-defense” if American outposts continued to come under attack.

 

Instead of heeding Washington’s warning, the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades announced on Thursday that it is willing to fight “a war of attrition against the enemy that will extend for years,” according to an earlier Al-Mayadeen report.

 

Speaking to Al Jazeera on Saturday, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi revealed that the US had sent messages to the various anti-US and anti-Israel militias operating in the Middle East, warning them to stand down. Washington “received a practical and public answer on the ground,” Raisi added.

 

Iran denies ordering strikes on American bases, with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian stating on Friday that the militias act on their own initiative. However, he cautioned that “if the United States continues what it has been doing so far, then new fronts will be opened up against the United States.”

ROME—A jarring report outlining decades of rampant child sex abuse at the hands of greedy nuns and perverted priests paints a troubling picture of systematic abuse in the German church.

 

The report is the byproduct of a lawsuit alleging that orphaned boys living in the boarding houses of the Order of the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer were sold or loaned for weeks at a time to predatory priests and businessmen in a sick rape trade. The men involved in the lawsuit say as boys they were denied being adopted out or sent to foster families because selling them for rape lined the sisters’ coffers for their “convent of horrors.” Some of the boys were then groomed to be sex slaves to perverts, the report claims.

 

The alleged abuse went on for years, with one of the males claiming the nuns even frequently visited their college dorms after they had left the convent. He said the nuns often drugged him and delivered him to predators’ apartments. The Order of Sisters of the Divine Redeemer did not answer multiple requests for comment about the allegations.

 

A second lawsuit, first reported by Deutsche Welle last year, comes after a separate case against the German church led by 63-year-old Karl Haucke who demanded the Archdiocese of Cologne carry out a full investigation into clerical sex crimes, which it concluded in January 2021. But the details of that investigative report were so horrific that Archbishop Reiner Maria Woelki refused to make it public, demanding that any journalists who see it sign confidentiality agreements. Eight German journalists walked out of a press conference in January after being denied access to the church’s investigation unless they agreed not to publish its contents.

 

Haucke says he was abused at least once a week between the ages of 11 and 14, often by more than one priest. “We had no words to describe what was being done to us. Nor did we know what it meant. And it did not stop at physical pain. We had a clear sense of humiliation and being used,” he told Deutsche Welle when the report was due to be released. He called the stifling of the report's release in January “scandalous” and said that denying the journalists the right to publish the report was “like being abused all over again.”

 

Several lawyers with access to the 560-page report on the nuns have shared segments with news outlets, including The Daily Beast. The report names various German businessmen and complicit clergy who “rented” the young boys from the nuns who ran a convent in Speyer, Germany between the 1960s and 1970s. Among the worst instances of abuse were gang bangs and orgies the young boys were forced to participate in before being returned to the convent where the nuns would then punish them for wrinkling their clothing or being covered in semen.

“Bishop Karl-Heinz Wiesmann, who now leads the archdiocese, said that the abuse report was ‘so gory’ it would be too shocking to make public.”

 

Haucke, who led a victims' group until he resigned over the censoring of the report, says Woelki told them in October 2020 that the report was not “legally watertight” and contained “inadmissible prejudices” against the Catholic church that were fed by scandals going on elsewhere. “The survivors were used again,” he said, referring to their cooperation in the report only to have it kept private. “People who have already been damaged in their lives by clergymen are being damaged again to protect the institution.”

 

The lawsuits also spawned a survey within religious orders that found that 1,412 people who lived in or frequented convents, parishes, and monasteries were abused as children, teenagers, and wards by at least 654 monks, nuns, and other members of the orders. Around 80 percent of the victims surveyed were male and 20 percent female. The survey also found that 80 percent of the abusers are now dead, and 37 had left the priesthood or religious order.

 

The Archdiocese of Cologne told The Daily Beast in a statement that the reason the report was not published was that it failed to fully explain the methodology of the research, but Bishop Karl-Heinz Wiesmann, who now leads the archdiocese, said that the abuse report was“so gory”it would be too shocking to make public. Wiesemann told the Catholic News Agency KNA that after reading it he had to take a month's sabbatical to recover. “I too have limited energy for the burdens I have to carry,” he said.

Nuns Raped Girls With Crucifixes as Female Pedophilia Was Covered Up by the Church

A horrifying report on the extent of clerical sex abuse in France has sent shock waves through the Catholic Church. But will it change anything?

ROME—“Marie” was placed in a French Catholic boarding school for “young girls from good families” when she was in the fifth grade. She remembers a nun who would come to her class every day to choose a student to help her with Mass. But the nun wasn’t looking for someone to help her. She was looking for a victim.

 

“I was 11 and looked 9. She would choose me once every two or three times,” she recalls. “She would take me to her office, lock the door, and then draw the curtains. After which she would put me on her knees to make me read the gospel according to Saint Paul or another saint, while she squeezed me with one hand to her chest and pulled down my panties with the other hand. We were of course in pleated skirts and not in pants. It terrified me and paralyzed.”

 

“Marie” couldn’t talk to her devout Catholic parents about the abuse until a friend convinced her to do so. The result, she says, was catastrophic. “You are really a pervert, a vicious liar. How dare you say such things?” her parents told her. In fact, her parents had told the nuns that she was being sent to boarding school because she needed to be tamed. “I was truly [a gift] for this nun… because she knew full well that she did not risk anything.”

 

The abuse lasted the whole year. At the age of 35, “Marie” told her mother again about the abuse. “My mother blissfully told me that it was impossible for a nun to whom she entrusted her daughter to abuse a girl,” she says. “Female pedophilia exists and unfortunately the media never talk about it.”

 

“Marie” was certainly not alone. Dozens of other victims of priests, nuns, and Catholic school personnel in France form the basis of a 2,500-page report released Tuesday by a special commission led by Jean-Marc Sauvé. While 80 percent of the victims were young boys between the ages of 10 and 13, many young girls were abused as well, and not only by priests. Nuns used crucifixes to rape little girls or forced boys to have sex with them, too.

 

The commission spent nearly three years combing through complaints and press reports and interviewing victims going back to the 1950s. Of the 3,000 abusers identified by the commission, two-thirds are priests. They found that priests and nuns alone abused around 216,000 children, but that the number climbs to 330,000 when they counted abuse at the hands of non-clergy who worked in Catholic schools and other institutions. The report only covers minors; the authors, who include scholars, psychologists, and law enforcement officials, say there could be many young men and women over the age of 18 who were also victims.

 

Their summary is damning, determining that the Catholic Church in France showed “a deep, cruel indifference toward victims.”

Only 22 of the thousands of cases of criminal pedophilia qualify under French law for legal action. More than 40 cases that are past the statutes of limitations have been forwarded to the French Catholic Church in hopes that the perpetrators will be punished. On average, each perpetrator abused 70 children. The president of the French Conference of Bishops, Eric de Moulins-Beaufort, said the church is “appalled” by the report. “I wish on that day to ask for pardon, pardon to each of you,” he told the victims. Pope Francis also expressed “sorrow” over the findings, saying he will pray for those affected. “His first thoughts are with the victims, with great sadness for their wounds,” Francis said in a statement through his press office, adding that he hoped the French church would now “undertake a way of redemption.”

 

Survivor Francois Devaux, who founded the victims' group La Parole Liberee, attended the presentation of the report. “You are a disgrace to our humanity,” he said, addressing the church as a whole.

“In this hell, there have been abominable mass crimes… but there has been even worse: betrayal of trust, betrayal of morale, betrayal of children.”
