Protests denounce FBI raids

CHICAGO—Chanting “FBI raids have got to go!” and “Freedom of speech under attack!” more than 350 people rallied in front of the FBI headquarters here September 27 to protest raids three days earlier on the homes of anti-war, union, and other political activists in Chicago and Minneapolis.

Some 150 people also protested the raids outside the FBI offices in Minneapolis, and demonstrations took place in more than a dozen other cities.

The FBI seized computers, cell phones, passports, and other documents and issued subpoenas to 11 people in Minnesota, Illinois, and Michigan to appear before a federal grand jury in Chicago.

FBI spokesman Steve Warfield said the raids were part of an “ongoing Joint Terrorism Task Force investigation into activities concerning the material support of terrorism.”

Among those whose homes were raided in Chicago wereantiwar and union activists Joe Iosbaker and Stephanie Weiner, and Hatem Abudayyeh, executive director of the Arab American Action Network.

Walter Soria, 20, who came with a group of friends to the Chicago picket, said, “We came because we don’t like this kind of thing. The government abuses its power.” Richard Berg, former president of Teamsters Local 743, told the Militant that “this is an attack on the entire labor movement. Joe and Stephanie have been trade unionists for many years.”

Iosbaker, a staff member at the University of Illinois at Chicago and chief steward for Service Employees International Union Local 73, and Weiner, a professor at Wilbur Wright College, have been served subpoenas to appear before a grand jury on October 5. According to the Chicago Tribune the subpoenas are for records detailing their travel to the Middle East and South America as well as for donations to Abudayyeh’s group and two groups on the State Department’s list of terrorist organizations.

At the program following the picket line in Chicago, Iosbaker reported that 25 FBI agents searched his house from top to bottom for 12 hours. Jim Fennerty, the National Lawyers Guild attorney representing Abudayyeh, spoke, as did Andy Thayer, a leader of the Chicago Coalition Against War and Racism; and Kristen Szremski, representing American Muslims for Palestine.

“We are deeply concerned at the FBI’s violation of first amendment rights of freedom of speech and assembly,” Szremski said. “We urge you to stand strong. We can’t allow this to scare us.”

Jorge Mújica, a leader of the immigrant rights movement, said he was visited by FBI agents following the 2006 May Day march. “They asked me why I wanted to change U.S. policy,” he said. “We are not terrorists—we only want real change, not what we’re getting from Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C.”

Other speakers included Hatem Galal, president of the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee; Stan Willis, of the National Conference of Black Lawyers; John Beacham, of the ANSWER Coalition; Shaun Harkin, International Socialist Organization, and Alyson Kennedy, Socialist Workers Party candidate for U.S. Senate.

According to the warrant issued to Mick Kelly, a union cafeteria worker at the University of Minnesota, the FBI was granted the powers to gather evidence related to people “providing, attempting and conspiring to provide material support” to terrorist organizations. The warrant listed Hezbollah, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), according to Ted Dooley, Kelly’s attorney. The warrant also allowed the FBI to gather information connected to the Freedom Road Socialist Organization.

Kelly is editor of FightBack!, a Minneapolis-based newspaper and Web site and a leader of the Anti-War Committee, also based in Minneapolis.

For those rightly concerned about the timing of Donald Trump's federal Jan. 6 trial, Thursday's oral arguments before theSupreme Court gave plenty of reasons for worry. Moreover, the court’s conservative majorityseemed inclined to define presidential immunityfrom prosecution in a way that could undermine some of the charges in special counsel Jack Smith's indictment.

 

Much of the court’s questioning went well beyond the immediate issue of Trump’s immunity for the criminal acts alleged. (That was always the request: immunity)

 

The court's conservatives focused almost exclusively on abstract questions of immunity for future presidents rather than the charges against the former president.

 

Even the more moderate members of the conservative majority seemed preoccupied with thedifficulty of drawing the line between official and unofficial acts, assuming that the former deserve extensive protection from prosecution.

 

Justice Amy Coney Barrett read a litany of acts from the indictment and asked Trump's lawyer whether they were official or not. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. indicated that theline between public and private presidential conduct is hard to draw, saying he was concerned that the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals "did not get into a focused consideration of what acts we're talking about or what documents we're talking about."

 

At best, the court's questioning augurs an opinion setting out general principles of immunity and necessitating a remand to the lower courts to apply the justices' guidance. As Justice Neil M. Gorsuch put it,"We're writing a rule for the ages." That would add further delay to a schedule that already seems to be putting a trial shortly before or beyond the November election.

 

And that wasn't even the most serious implication for Smith's case.

 

The conservative justices' questioning of Michael Dreeben, the special counsel’s well-regarded Supreme Court specialist, was sharp and fast. And their questions to both sides suggested they might conclude thatinquiring into a president’s motivesfor certain acts wouldviolate the constitutional separation of powers. That would point to a decision requiring the courts to set aside all evidence of a president’s malign intent. (He is not a well regarded atty, he and Smith lost 3 prior cases at the SC, and rebuked. Incompetent lefty)

 

If motive has to be disregarded= in determining whether the president's actions are official or not,it could undermine much of the case against Trump— including, for example, his brazen attempt to strong-arm the Department of Justice into falsely informing Georgia officials that the state's election results were flawed.

 

Such alimitation might even provide immunity in the hypothetical extremeproposed during arguments before the D.C. Circuit: a president ordering Navy Seals to assassinate a political opponent. The force of that example is that it shows how an official act could have a patently malign motive.

 

As Justice Elena Kagan interjected in reference to the implications of her colleagues' questions and Trump lawyer John Sauer's response: “You’re asking us to say that a president is entitled … for total personal gain, to use the trappings of his office.” Exactly right.

 

Gorsuch threw another lifeline to Trump’s lawyer, asking whether he would accept a definition of official acts like the one in the D.C. Circuit’s opinion in Blassingame vs. Trump, which concerned presidential immunity from civil suits. That case drew a distinction between Trump's acts as an officeholder and as an office-seeker.Applying it to the criminal case would likely immunize Trumpfor some of the conduct in the indictment, in particular his allegedly corrupt use of the Justice Department, though he would presumably remain on the hook for political conduct such as organizing false electors…

It got worse for the prosecution. More or less out of nowhere, Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh suggested that one of the charges against Trump,conspiracy to defraud the United States, relies on a statute that is so broad andvague that it could be misused by future prosecutorsagainst future presidents. Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. jumped in to second the suggestion, taking up a criticism of the prosecution that Trump's lawyers hadn't even raised. (It was reported Dreeben was unprepared, offered bizarre interpretations of law, and said, “the government & DOJ can be trusted to not break the law”, trust me!)

 

Since the court just heard arguments in a separate casethat could invalidate two of the four chargesagainst Trump — those under a federal obstruction statute — an opinion invalidating another charge could force Smith to soldier on with only one remaining charge against Trump, conspiracy against rights. That charge relies on the electorate's right to have votes counted, which is a somewhat indirect approach to accountability for Trump’s pernicious post-election conduct.

 

That's not all. Kavanaugh also raised the Trump team's suggestion thatperhaps Congress should have to make a "clear statement" of intentto apply any criminal law to the president, a stratagem the court previously conjured to deal with separation-of-powers concerns. Justice Sonia Sotomayor pointed out that it would in effect excuse a president for violations of most of the federal code.

 

Dreeben hardly had time to make his points until the end of the nearly three-hour argument, when Kagan gave him some room to do so. Kagan also asked the special counsel's representative a friendly question getting at the possibility that the court could limit its decision to the charges against Trump to permit the trial to go forward expeditiously. But the odds that the court will take that guidance now look extremely slim.

 

Going into Thursday’s showdown, thecritical questionwaswhether the court’s opinion would permit the trialto go forward without further proceedings.

 

In the wake of the arguments, that seems more unlikely than ever. Indeed, the court's questions raised the additionalalarming prospect that it could confer the kind of expansive presidential immunitythat would further weaken the constitutional principle that a president is not a king.

Earlier this month, he expressed fear that Donald Trump would throw him in prison if he wins back the White House in November.

NASA’s Hubble Pauses Science Due to Gyro Issue

NASA is working to resume science operations of the agency’s Hubble Space Telescope after it entered safe mode April 23 due to an ongoing gyroscope (gyro) issue. Hubble’s instruments are stable, and the telescope is in good health.

 

The telescope automatically entered safe mode when one of its three gyroscopes gave faulty readings. The gyros measure the telescope’s turn rates and are part of the system that determines which direction the telescope is pointed. While in safe mode, science operations are suspended, and the telescope waits for new directions from the ground.

 

This particular gyro caused Hubble to enter safe mode in November after returning similar faulty readings. The team is currently working to identify potential solutions. If necessary, the spacecraft can be re-configured to operate with only one gyro, with the other remaining gyro placed in reserve . The spacecraft had six new gyros installed during the fifth and final space shuttle servicing mission in 2009. To date, three of those gyros remain operational, including the gyro currently experiencing fluctuations. Hubble uses three gyros to maximize efficiency, but could continue to make science observations with only one gyro if required.

 

NASA anticipates Hubble will continue making groundbreaking discoveries, working with other observatories, such as the agency’s James Webb Space Telescope, throughout this decade and possibly into the next.

In a rare burst of honesty and clarity, the Old Gray Hag actually let a well-respected legal professor from Boston University publish an opinion piece. This piece didn’t just poke holes in Alvin Bragg’s sham “hush money” case—it blasted it into a pile of dust. The professor called it not only a legal embarrassment but a historic mistake. Ouch.

 

His name is Professor Shugerman, and while he was never onboard with Biden’s show trial, led by Fat Alvin Bragg, after what he’s seen unfold, he’s gone from being embarrassed for the entire US injustice system, to now believing this trial is a historic misstep that hinges on Monday’s opening arguments. Professor Shugerman had to pick his jaw up from the floor after listening to prosecutors lay out their case.

About a year ago, when Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, indicted former President Donald Trump, I was critical of the case and called it an embarrassment. I thought an array of legal problems would and should lead to long delays in federal courts.

 

After listening to Monday’s opening statement by prosecutors, I still think the Manhattan D.A. has made a historic mistake. Their vague allegation about “a criminal scheme to corrupt the 2016 presidential election” has me more concerned than ever about their unprecedented use of state law and their persistent avoidance of specifying an election crime or a valid theory of fraud.

 

Trump is accused of falsifying business records, which are typically misdemeanor charges. To ramp this up to a criminal case, Mr. Bragg and his team are throwing around potential violations of federal election law and state tax fraud. They’re even pulling in state election law, but here’s the kicker: state definitions of “public office” will usually limit those rules to state and local races. What on earth is Bragg doing? This trial is a circus, and a desperate one at that.

 

Playing “Devil’s Advocate,” the professor attempted to sketch out a scenario that would make legal sense and give Alvin Bragg the benefit of the doubt, but in the end, he just wasn’t able to do it. The New York Times piece goes on:

 

A recent conversation with Jeffrey Cohen, a friend, Boston College law professor and former prosecutor, made me think that the case could turn out to be more legitimate than I had originally thought. The reason has to do with those allegedly falsified business records: Most of them were entered in early 2017, generally before Mr. Trump filed his Federal Election Commission report that summer. Mr. Trump may have foreseen an investigation into his campaign, leading to its financial records. Mr. Trump may have falsely recorded these internal records before the F.E.C. filing as consciously part of the same fraud: to create a consistent paper trail and to hide intent to violate federal election laws, or defraud the F.E.C.

 

In short: It’s not the crime; it’s the cover-up.

 

Looking at the case in this way might address concerns about state jurisdiction. In this scenario, Mr. Trump arguably intended to deceive state investigators, too. State investigators could find these inconsistencies and alert federal agencies. Prosecutors could argue that New York State agencies have an interest in detecting conspiracies to defraud federal entities; they might also have a plausible answer to significant questions about whether New York State has jurisdiction or whether this stretch of a state business filing law is pre-empted by federal law.

 

However, this explanation is a novel interpretation with many significant legal problems. And none of the Manhattan D.A.’s filings or today’s opening statement even hint at this approach.

Instead of a theory of defrauding state regulators, Mr. Bragg has adopted a weak theory of “election interference,” and Justice Juan Merchan described the case, in his summary of it during jury selection, as anallegation of falsifying business records “to conceal an agreement with others to unlawfully influence the 2016 election.”

 

As a reality check, it is legal for a candidate to pay for a nondisclosure agreement. Hush money is unseemly, but it is legal. The election law scholar Richard Hasen rightly observed, “Calling it election interference actually cheapens the term and undermines the deadly serious charges in the real election interference cases.”

 

In Monday’s opening argument, theprosecutor Matthew Colangelo still evaded specifics about what was illegal about influencing an election, but then he claimed, “It was election fraud, pure and simple.” None of the relevant state or federal statutes refer to filing violations as fraud. Calling it “election fraud” is a legal and strategic mistake, exaggerating the case and setting up the jury with high expectations that the prosecutors cannot meet

 

The professor points out three major red flags in this case and explains that Alvin Bragg is navigating uncharted, stormy legal waters. The New York Times piece continues:

 

The most accurate description of this criminal case is a federal campaign finance filing violation. Without a federal violation (which the state election statute is tethered to), Mr. Bragg cannot upgrade the misdemeanor counts into felonies. Moreover, it is unclear how this case would even fulfill the misdemeanor requirement of “intent to defraud” without the federal crime.

 

In stretching jurisdiction and trying a federal crime in state court, the Manhattan D.A. is now pushing untested legal interpretations and applications. I see three red flags raising concerns about selective prosecution upon appeal.

 

Red flag 1:

 

First, I could find no previous case of any state prosecutor relying on the Federal Election Campaign Act either as a direct crime or a predicate crime.

 

Red flag 2:

 

Mr. Trump’s lawyers argued that the New York statute requires that the predicate (underlying) crime must also be a New York crime, not a crime in another jurisdiction. The Manhattan D.A. responded with judicial precedents only about other criminal statutes, not the statute in this case. In the end, they could not cite a single judicial interpretation of this particular statute supporting their use of the statute (a plea deal and a single jury instruction do not count).

 

Red flag 3:

 

…no New York precedent has allowed an interpretation of defrauding the general public. Legal experts have noted that such a broad “election interference” theory is unprecedented, and a conviction based on it may not survive a state appeal.

“Although the New York case gets packaged as election interference, failing to report a campaign payment is a small potatoes campaign-finance crime,” Hasen wrote. “Any voters who look beneath the surface are sure to be underwhelmed. Calling it election interference actually cheapens the term and undermines the deadly serious charges in the real election interference cases.”

 

This is the result when activist judges and juries take the stage. Embarrassing cases and historic mistakes end up in our courts and dominate the news cycle. It’s all part of the uniparty’s scheme to cling to power and block an outsider from returning to the White House. They’re willing to make a complete mockery of our systems and even risk destroying our country, all to maintain their grip on power. This case has become such a sideshow that even legal experts, many of whom likely aren’t fans of President Trump, are anxious to call this trial out for what it is. They want to go on record to distance themselves from what amounts to a kangaroo court, in hopes of preserving some shred of their reputations as our judicial system circles the drain.

The attack took place in Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic, according to the Defense Ministry

 

Russian forces have struck a freight train carrying military equipment supplied to Ukrainian forces by Kiev's Western backers, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said.

 

The combined attack involved aircraft, missiles and artillery, the ministry said in a statement on Friday.

 

“A train with Western weapons and military equipment was hit in the area of the settlement of Udachnoye in [Russia’s] Donetsk People’s Republic,” it added..

 

Udachnoye, translated as ‘lucky’ in English, is located in the western part of the republic.

 

Personnel and equipment from the 67th Ukrainian mechanized brigade were also struck at a railway loading station in the area of Balakleya in Ukraine’s Kharkov Region, the ministry said.

Over the past 24 hours, Russian forces have also destroyed five US-made M777 howitzers, two American M102 105mm lightweight towed howitzers, a US-designed AN/TPQ-50 counter-fire radar, a British FH-70 howitzer, and other hardware, according to the statement.

 

The flow of Western aid to Ukraine decreased drastically in recent months as Republicans in the US Congress resisted attempts by President Joe Biden to push through another $61 billion in military assistance for Kiev. The standoff, which had dragged on since the autumn, was resolved earlier this week when lawmakers passed the legislation and Biden signed off on it.

 

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday that the delays in aid from the US and the EU had led to “consequences” on the battlefield. Ukrainian forces have been “outgunned, allowing Russia to push forward on the front line,” he said. Stoltenberg argued, however, that “it is not too late for Ukraine to prevail because more support is on the way.”

The US Secretary of State says Washington is prepared to impose more sanctions on Beijing over the alleged transfer of military components

 

Washington is ready to introduce more sanctions against China over its alleged transfer of dual-use goods and components, which it claims can be used by the Russia, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday.

 

Speaking at a press conference in Beijing following a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the US official recalled that Washington has already imposed sanctions against more than 100 Chinese entities and is “fully prepared to act” and “take additional measures.”

 

Blinken claimed that China’s alleged support for the Russian defense industry raises concerns not only about the situation in Ukraine, but also about a “medium to long-term threat that many Europeans feel viscerally that Russia poses to them.”

 

Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal had also reported that the US was drafting sanctions that could cut off some Chinese banks from the global financial system unless Beijing severs its economic ties with Russia.

The outlet claimed that US officials believe trade with China has allowed Russia to rebuild its military industrial capacity and could help it defeat Ukraine in a war of attrition.

 

Beijing, in turn, has accused the US of hypocrisy for providing billions of dollars in assistance to Ukraine while “unreasonably criticizing the normal trade and economic relations between Russia and China.”

 

“This is a very hypocritical and irresponsible approach,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbing told reporters on Friday in response to Blinken’s concerns about Beijing's support of Moscow.

 

China has also vehemently rejected accusations leveled by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg of “fueling” the Ukraine conflict. Beijing has instead blamed NATO for instigating the crisis by continuing its expansion in Europe and refusing to respect Russian national security concerns.

Following his meeting with Blinken, President Xi suggested that the US and China “should be partners, not rivals” and should strive towards achieving “mutual success and not harm each other.”

 

“I proposed three major principles: mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation. They are not only a summary of past experience, but also a guide to the future,” the Chinese leader was quoted as saying.

 

Beijing has maintained a policy of neutrality on the Ukraine conflict, with Chinese officials repeatedly stating that the country is not selling weapons to either Russia or Ukraine. Earlier this month, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning insisted that China “regulates the export of dual-use articles in accordance with laws and regulations,” urging “relevant countries” not to “smear or attack the normal relations between China and Russia.”

 

In December last year, US President Joe Biden issued a decree which enabled sanctions on foreign financial institutions that continue to deal with Russia. It targeted lenders outside US and EU jurisdictions that help Russia source sensitive items, which reportedly include semiconductors, machine tools, chemical precursors, ball bearings, and optical systems.

NASA’s Optical Comms Demo Transmits Data Over 140 Million Miles

Riding aboard NASA’s Psyche spacecraft, the agency’s Deep Space Optical Communications technology demonstration continues to break records. While the asteroid-bound spacecraft doesn’t rely on optical communications to send data, the new technology has proven that it’s up to the task. After interfacing with the Psyche’s radio frequency transmitter, the laser communications demo sent a copy of engineering data from over 140 million miles away, 1½ times the distance between Earth and the Sun.

This achievement provides a glimpse into how spacecraft could use optical communications in the future, enabling higher-data-rate communications of complex scientific information as well as high-definition imagery and video in support of humanity’s next giant leap: sending humans to Mars.

 

“We downlinked about 10 minutes of duplicated spacecraft data during a pass on April 8,” said Meera Srinivasan, the project’s operations lead at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. “Until then, we’d been sending test and diagnostic data in our downlinks from Psyche. This represents a significant milestone for the project by showing how optical communications can interface with a spacecraft’s radio frequency comms system.”

The laser communications technology in this demo is designed to transmit data from deep space at rates 10 to 100 times faster than the state-of-the-art radio frequency systems used by deep space missions today.

After launching on Oct. 13, 2023, the spacecraft remains healthy and stable as it journeys to the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter to visit the asteroid Psyche.

 

NASA’s optical communications demonstration has shown that it can transmit test data at a maximum rate of 267 megabits per second from the flight laser transceiver’s near-infrared downlink laser — a bit rate comparable to broadband internet download speeds.

That was achieved on Dec. 11, 2023, when the experiment beamed a 15-second ultra-high-definition video to Earth from 19 million miles away. The video, along with other test data, including digital versions of Arizona State University’s Psyche Inspired artwork, had been loaded onto the flight laser transceiver before Psyche launched last year.

 

Now that the spacecraft is more than seven times farther away, the rate at which it can send and receive data is reduced, as expected. During the April 8 test, the spacecraft transmitted test data at a maximum rate of 25 Mbps, which far surpasses the project’s goal of proving at least 1 Mbps was possible at that distance.

The project team also commanded the transceiver to transmit Psyche-generated data optically. While Psyche was transmitting data over its radio frequency channel to NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN), the optical communications system simultaneously transmitted a portion of the same data to the Hale Telescope at Caltech’s Palomar Observatory in San Diego County, California — the tech demo’s primary downlink ground station.

 

“After receiving the data from the DSN and Palomar, we verified the optically downlinked data at JPL,” said Ken Andrews, project flight operations lead at JPL. “It was a small amount of data downlinked over a short time frame, but the fact we’re doing this now has surpassed all of our expectations.”

 

After Psyche launched, the optical communications demo was initially used to downlink pre-loaded data, including the Taters the cat video. Since then, the project has proven that the transceiver can receive data from the high-power uplink laser at JPL’s Table Mountain facility, near Wrightwood, California. Data can even be sent to the transceiver and then downlinked back to Earth on the same night, as the project proved in a recent “turnaround experiment.”

This experiment relayed test data — as well as digital pet photographs — to Psyche and back again, a round trip of up to 280 million miles (450 million kilometers). It also downlinked large amounts of the tech demo’s own engineering data to study the characteristics of the optical communications link.

 

“We’ve learned a great deal about how far we can push the system when we do have clear skies, although storms have interrupted operations at both Table Mountain and Palomar on occasion,” said Ryan Rogalin, the project’s receiver electronics lead at JPL. (Whereas radio frequency communications can operate in most weather conditions, optical communications require relatively clear skies to transmit high-bandwidth data.)

JPL recently led an experiment to combine Palomar, the experimental radio frequency-optical antenna at the DSN’s Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in Barstow, California, and a detector at Table Mountain to receive the same signal in concert.

The potential currency, while still under review and development, would allow these nations to assert their economic independence while competing with the existing international financial system. The current system is dominated by the US dollar, which accounts for about 90 percent of all currency trading. Until recently, nearly 100 percent of oil trading was conducted in US dollars; however, in 2023 one-fifth of oil trades were reportedly made using non-US dollar currencies.

 

Central to this ongoing situation is the US trade war with China, as well as US sanctions on China and Russia. Should the BRICS nations establish a new reserve currency, it would likely significantly impact the US dollar, potentially leading to a decline in demand. In turn, this would have implications for the US and global economies.

 

Let's look at the emerging BRICS currency and its potential implications for investors.

​Why do the BRICS nations want to create a new currency?

 

The BRICS nations have a slew of reasons for wanting to set up a new currency. Recent global financial challenges and aggressive US foreign policies have prompted the BRICS countries to explore the possibility. They want to better serve their own economic interests while reducing global dependence on the US dollar and the euro.

Later last year in the lead up to the 2023 BRICS Summit in August, there was speculation that an announcement of such a currency could be on the table. This proved to be wishful thinking, however.

 

"The development of anything alternative is more a medium to long term ambition. There is no suggestion right now to creates a BRICS currency," Maasdorp told Bloomberg.

 

South Africa's BRICS ambassador, Anil Sooklal, has said as many as 40 countries have expressed interest in joining BRICS. At the 2023 BRICS Summit , six countries were invited to become BRICS members: Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. All but Argentina officially joined the alliance in January 2024.

 

Some experts believe that a BRICS currency is a flawed idea, as it would unite countries with very different economies. There are also concerns that non-Chinese members might increase their dependence on China's yuan instead. That said, when Russia demanded in October 2023 that India pay for oil in yuan, India refused to use anything other than the US dollar or rupees. Russia is struggling to use its excess supply of rupees.

However, if a new BRICS currency was to stabilize against the dollar, it could weaken the power of US sanctions, leading to a further decline in the dollar's value. Importantly though, he doesn't see this as a new gold standard, or the end of the US dollar or the euro.

 

“(With) a real gold standard, you can take the currency and go to any one of the central banks and get some gold,” Rickards said at the event. “With BRICS they don’t have to own any gold, they don’t have to buy any gold, they don’t have to prop up the price. NASA Engineer Claims Major Discovery Of New Force In Physics, But Many Aren't Convinced

A former NASA engineer working on a propellant-less propulsion drive has claimed that the device can deliver enough thrust to achieve lift in Earth's gravity, an effect which should not take place under our current understanding of physics.

Dr Charles Buhler, who worked on a range of programs while at NASA, has since co-founded Exodus Propulsion Technologies, which in 2019 applied for a patent for a system that they claim can generate force using asymmetrical electrostatic pressure. According to the patent, the system generates a voltage difference across an electrically conductive surface.

 

"The applied voltage difference creates an electric field resulting in an electrostatic pressure force acting on at least one surface of an object. Asymmetries in the resulting electrostatic pressure force vectors result in a net resulting electrostatic pressure force acting on the object," the patent reads, adding that the invention could be used as a thruster to propel spacecraft. "The magnitude of the net resulting electrostatic pressure force is a function of the geometry of the electrically conductive surfaces, the applied voltage, and the dielectric constant of any material present in the gap between electrodes."

 

According to Buhler, whose team has been looking for alternative explanations for the force generated, they were able to create a large enough force for the (very small) object to overcome Earth's 1G of gravity (i.e. enough thrust to move the object off the ground in Earth's gravity) using the method.

That may sound like peanuts – but in the near-vacuum of space, you do not need a lot of thrust to accelerate (depending, of course, on the mass of your payload). If you could maintain a constant 1G of acceleration, for example, not only could you enjoy a nice artificial gravity equivalent to that on Earth, but you could reach vast distances within a human lifespan (or at least, from the traveler's perspective). But doing so would require an unimaginable amount of force beyond what we are capable of delivering with current propellants.

 

Buhler's claim, were it to be proven true and not the result of another force the team has not accounted for, would be huge. During tests, the team claims to have found an even more puzzling result; the device was apparently sometimes able to maintain this thrust without a constant electrical input.

“The most important message to convey to the public is that a major discovery occurred,” Buhler told The Debrief. “This discovery of a New Force is fundamental in that electric fields alone can generate a sustainable force onto an object and allow center-of-mass translation of said object without expelling mass.”

 

There are plenty of reasons to be skeptical of such claims. Other devices, notably the EmDrive, have been claimed to have produced thrust without propellant. This was a highly controversial claim, as to contravene the law of conservation of momentum, and every action having an equal and opposite reaction. Later teams trying to replicate the mysterious thrust created by the EmDrive found that it could all be explained with normal physics and a thermal effect.

"With the aid of a new measuring scale structure and different suspension points of the same engine, we were able to reproduce apparent thrust forces similar to those measured by the NASA-team, but also to make them disappear by means of a point suspension," Professor Martin Tajmar explained to German website GrenzWissenschaft-Aktuell.

 

"When power flows into the EmDrive, the engine warms up. This also causes the fastening elements on the scale to warp, causing the scale to move to a new zero point. We were able to prevent that in an improved structure. Our measurements refute all EmDrive claims by at least 3 orders of magnitude."

If the force behind Exodus Propulsion Technologies' design was proved to be the result of asymmetrical electrostatic pressure and not some other unaccounted-for force, and it can be shown to work on larger scales, it would be revolutionary to spaceflight.

 

“There are rules that include conservation of energy, but if done correctly, one can generate forces unlike anything humankind has done before,” Buhler added. “It will be this force that we will use to propel objects for the next 1,000 years… until the next thing comes.”

But it is, as they say, an extraordinary claim requiring extraordinary evidence. Buhler is inviting other scientists to look at the results and try to understand the underlying physics behind it. It could be that Buhler, or another, will find normal physics is behind the apparent propellent-less thrust.

For now, we would caution not to get your hopes up space high.

Japan startup reveals "world's first" close-up space debris image

Japanese space company Astroscale Holdings Inc. on Friday unveiled what it calls the world's first publicly released close-up image taken of space debris, hailing it as progress toward understanding the challenges posed by trash orbiting Earth.

 

The debris the second-stage section of Japan's H2A rocket launched in 2009 was captured by the startup's cuboid-shaped demonstration satellite, known as ADRAS-J, from several hundred meters away.

 

Orbiting at high speeds around 600 kilometers above Earth, the section is approximately 11 meters long with a diameter of some 4 meters and weighs roughly 3 tons.

 

The image shows the object wrapped in brown insulation material as it drifts through the dark expanse of space.

 

"The unprecedented image marks a crucial step towards understanding and addressing the challenges posed by space debris, driving progress toward a safer and more sustainable space environment," the Tokyo-based satellite-servicing company said in a press release.

 

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency has confirmed through its analysis that the insulation material, originally orange in color, has turned dark brown due to exposure to intense ultraviolet radiation while in orbit.

 

In the next phase of its mission, ADRAS-J will approach within a few meters of the debris to observe it rotating in greater detail, as well as how damaged it is and its level of deterioration.

 

The removal of space debris has become an urgent issue as concerns grow about the potential for dangerous collisions amid a growing number of satellites and rockets in the Earth's orbit.

 

Astroscale was founded in 2013 by former Finance Ministry bureaucrat Nobu Okada to offer a commercial service for space debris removal. Its future plans include collecting space debris using a satellite equipped with a robotic arm and burning it up in the Earth's atmosphere.

 

ADRAS-J, which stands for Active Debris Removal by Astroscale-Japan, was launched from New Zealand in February.

The Earth’s atmosphere is described as a fragile coat wrapping around the planet, comparable in scale to an apple’s skin protecting the fruit. For more than half a century, even before the Apollo 16 mission captured the first ultraviolet images of Earth, researchers knew that the outermost atmospheric layer — the geocorona — extends far beyond the denser, surface-level air that we breathe.

 

Now, a new study from Space Physics redefines the boundaries of our planet, based on overlooked data collected at the end of the last millennium. The report concludes that the edges of the atmosphere actually extend more than 391,000 miles from the planet’s surface, about twice as far as our moon.

 

This doesn’t mean you can go moonwalking without a spacesuit, said Jean-Loup Bertaux, a study coauthor and planetologist. The hydrogen molecules that make up the outer atmosphere are so sparse that this region is still considered a vacuum. Any spacecraft traveling through it wouldn’t notice a thing or be slowed by drag.

 

It does mean, however, that humankind has yet to leave the Earth’s atmosphere. The moon, the farthest point ever reached by astronauts, orbits well within the geocorona.

 

All of this challenges the way we see our planet’s borders. NASA considers a space traveler to be an astronaut when they climb higher than 50 miles above the planet’s surface. The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, which judges world records for aeronautic travel, uses the Kármán line — set at 100 kilometers above sea level — to denote the “edge of space.”

With this new knowledge, high-powered telescopes on the moon or in Earth’s orbit will also need to account for — and filter out — the geocorona’s bright ultraviolet light when looking out into the universe. This would make it easier to scan the cosmos.

 

And if those telescopes spot planets out in the galaxy with the same halo that surrounds our Earth, that light could someday be used to locate habitable planets far from our own interstellar front door.

 

What the researchers did

More than two decades ago, a spacecraft called SOHO — the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory — was suspended halfway between the Earth and the sun, searching the sky for a particular frequency of ultraviolet light known as Lyman-alpha radiation.

 

What they found

Although the existence of the geocorona was well-known even in the early 1960s, according to Bertaux, experts at the time would have estimated that it ended well inside of the lunar orbit.

 

Bertaux, Baliukin and their team found the geocorona extends more than 50 times the Earth’s diameter away from the planet’s surface.

 

“When the astronauts were on the moon, they were looking back at the Earth,” Bertaux said, “but they were not thinking that they were indeed inside the atmosphere of the Earth.”

 

What it means

The Earth’s extended atmosphere isn’t much good for supporting life, but it does have consequences for our search for extraterrestrials, said Thomas J. Immel, a physicist at the University of California, Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory who was not involved in this study.

 

“We’re more interested in the upper atmosphere of planets these days because of exoplanets,” Immel said.

 

There’s more to do here on Earth even as we reach out to observe planets around other stars.

Exoplanets orbit stars other than our own sun. Some of those exoplanets likely fall in the “habitable zone,” where liquid water might exist on a planet’s surface. The hydrogen in our atmosphere is the result of hydrogen atoms separating from water. If we’re looking for habitable planets out there in space, we might be looking for a geocorona just like ours.

An unidentified 30-year old Honduran national was previously charged with felony carnal knowledge of a child 13 to 14 years of age in 2023. US Immigration and Customs (ICE) placed an immigration detainer on him, but authorities in Fairfax County, Virginia ignored it and released him on bail. In February of this year, he was charged with two additional counts of felony carnal knowledge of a child 13 to14 years of age without force, and two counts of felony indecent liberties with a child less than 15 years of age. Signs of spiders from Mars

No sign of Ziggy Stardust – but ESA’s Mars Express has snapped the telltale traces of ‘spiders’ scattered across the southern polar region of Mars.

 

Rather than being actual spiders, these small, dark features form when spring sunshine falls on layers of carbon dioxide deposited over the dark winter months. The sunlight causes carbon dioxide ice at the bottom of the layer to turn into gas, which subsequently builds up and breaks through slabs of overlying ice. The gas bursts free in martian springtime, dragging dark material up to the surface as it goes and shattering layers of ice up to a metre thick.

 

The emerging gas, laden with dark dust, shoots up through cracks in the ice in the form of tall fountains or geysers, before falling back down and settling on the surface. This creates dark spots of between 45 m and 1 km across. This same process creates characteristic ‘spider-shaped’ patterns etched beneath the ice – and so these dark spots are a telltale sign that spiders may be lurking below.

 

Another of ESA’s Mars explorers, the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), has imaged the spiders’ tendril-like patterns especially clearly (see below). The spiders captured by TGO lie near, but outside, the region shown in this new Mars Express image. The Mars Express view shows the dark spots on the surface formed by escaping gas and material, while the TGO perspective also captures the spidery, web-like channels that are carved into the ice below.

 

The aforementioned dark spots can be seen all over the Mars Express image, creeping across towering hills and expansive plateaus. However, most can be seen as small spots in the dark region to the left, which sits just at the outskirts of a part of Mars nicknamed Inca City. The reason for this name is no mystery, with the linear, almost geometric network of ridges being reminiscent of Inca ruins. More formally known as Angustus Labyrinthus, Inca City was discovered in 1972 by NASA’s Mariner 9 probe.

 

This new view of Inca City and its hidden arachnid residents was captured by Mars Express’s High Resolution Stereo Camera. A version with labels is also available; click on the image below to explore the region and discover more about the different features you can see here.

 

A mysterious origin

We’re still not sure exactly how Inca City formed. It could be that sand dunes have turned to stone over time. Perhaps material such as magma or sand is seeping through fractured sheets of martian rock. Or, the ridges could be ‘eskers’, winding structures related to glaciers.

 

The ‘walls’ of Inca City appear to trace part of a large circle, 86 km in diameter. Scientists therefore suspect that the ‘city’ sits within a large crater that itself formed as a rock from space crashed into the planet’s surface. This impact likely caused faults to ripple through the surrounding plain, which were then filled with rising lava and have since worn away over time.

 

Towards the middle section of the image the landscape changes somewhat, with large roundish and oval swirls creating an effect reminiscent of marble. This effect is thought to occur when layered deposits are worn away over time.

 

To the right-centre of the frame lie a few prominent steep-flanked, flat-topped mounds and hills that rise up for more than 1500 m above the surrounding terrain. These form as softer material is eroded over time by flows of wind, water or ice, leaving behind the harder material that forms these hills.

 

The ground towards the right (north) becomes increasingly covered in smooth, light-coloured dust. Some signs of spiders can be seen scattered across the plateaus here, lurking amongst various canyons and troughs.

The Office of Pandemic Preparedness and Response Policy (OPPR), established by the Congress in December 2022 under section 2104 of Public Law 117-328, is playing a critical role in the Federal Government's pandemic preparedness efforts. The OPPR is providing advice, within the Executive Office of the President, on policy related to preparedness for, and response to, pandemic and other biological threats that may impact national security. The OPPR is also supporting my Administration's continued work to address COVID-19 and other public health threats, facilitating coordination and communication among executive departments and agencies to ensure that the United States can quickly detect, identify, and respond to such threats as necessary. Mexican state energy company Pemex reported on Friday a net profit of 4.7 billion pesos for the first quarter of 2024, down 91.7% from the year earlier period, amid lower sales and higher costs.

Pemex also reported revenues of 405.9 billion pesos for the January-to-March period, down 3% from the year before, driven mainly by a drop in crude prices.

Its financial debt was $101.5 billion at the end of the quarter. Throughout his term in office, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has thrown Pemex billions of dollars in lifelines, including capital injections and tax reductions. The world's most indebted energy company, Pemex owes national and international service providers billions more.

Pemex remains the largest contributor to state coffers even though production has fallen from the heights seen decades earlier because fields are being depleted and newer discoveries have failed to compensate for the decline.

Vice Chiefs: Operating jointly provides advantage over adversaries

The U.S. military is at its best when its separate branches are working together.

That was the resonant message communicated by the vice chairmen of the U.S. armed forces' six branches during a panel discussion April 24 at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C.

With a theme of "Preparing U.S. Military Forces for Competition and Contestation," the 90-minute discussion covered a wide range of topics, including many related to how joint operations give U.S. forces a leg up against America's adversaries.

 

Regarding the military's comparative advantage to operate jointly, one panelist said it's something that is happening more frequently, and that it's something America's near-peer adversaries hadn't counted on.

"They didn't think we'd be able to fight [jointly]. They also didn't think we'd be able to fight [alongside] our allies. They also didn't think we were going to be able to fight [alongside] our commercial partners," said Gen. Michael A. Guetlein, the Space Force's vice chief of space operations. "So, what we're learning from not only what's going on in the Middle East, but especially in Ukraine, is that we're bringing all of this to bear, simultaneously, on the adversary."

 

Guetlein added the caveat that America's adversaries are also acting in a similar fashion, thus necessitating that the joint force constantly works to ramp up more integration and networking among the branches.

To that end, a significant portion of the discussion was focused on the Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control, or CJADC2, that the Defense Department is developing.

CJADC2, which had its initial iteration in February of this year, is the DoD's approach to developing both material and non-material solutions to deliver information and decision advantage to commanders.

 

"Command and Control [has] been the integrating and synthesizing function of all the seven joint functions that we have, and it's one of the most critical components of how we fight as a combined joint force," said Gen. James J. Mingus, the Army's vice chief of staff.

"CJADC2 is making sure that we as a joint force move together forward."

Adm. James W. Kilby, vice chief of naval operations, said that it's important for all the vice chiefs to acknowledge their and their individual branch of service's reliance on each other in order to successfully work together as a joint force.

 

"This [CJADC2] effort, which has been going on for quite some time, is an imperative," he said.

"How we get there is what we really need to focus on, so we can collectively benefit from each other."

Members of the panel also spoke of real-world examples of how the separate branches working jointly bring a comparative advantage to the battlespace.

 

"From a Red Sea perspective, it takes a joint force for this big fight we're preparing for; everybody brings something to that game," Gen. Christopher Mahoney, assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, said of the ongoing conflict with Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists.

As an example of this, Mahoney pointed out how the Department of the Navy was able to provide some mobility in the Red Sea region when the military lacked basing rights.

Another example of joint force comparative advantages involves two other branches of the armed services.

 

"I can tell you that on the topic of airbase air defense … there is not a closer relationship than that, specifically, between the Army and Air Force," said Gen. James C. Slife, the Air Force's vice chief of staff.

"And I'm really encouraged by … us leveraging one of our comparative advantages, which is our ability to work jointly."

The morning panel was one portion of CSIS's day-long Global Security Forum 2024.

Space Systems Command’s personnel are connected by a common purpose, far greater than any of the individuals that make up the organization, its commanding officer told a capacity crowd of several hundred people at a morning event, April 18, at Los Angeles Air Force Base.

“One of our four ‘Guardian Ideals’ is connection - character, connection, commitment, and courage,” said Lt. Gen. Philip Garrant, SSC commander, whose all-call address was the keynote for a day-long event celebrating the command and its mix of uniformed, civilian and contractor staff. “What we do is incredibly hard, but we do it incredibly well, and we do it because of all of you,” he said.

 

Despite the speed of change since the Space Force was created in 2019, SSC is keeping apace of the command’s mission, Garrant said, including implementing the new Commercial Space Strategy announced this month by Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman.

“We’ve never had a single mission command focused on the four aspects of readiness, those being people, training, equipment, and sustainment,” Garrant said. “For the first time, under a single commander, we are focused on delivering capability and readiness improvement.”

 

Space Systems Command is headquartered on Los Angeles AFB in El Segundo but includes organizations and personnel operating from facilities across the United States and around the world. The command manages a $15.6 billion space acquisition budget for the Department of Defense and works to develop, acquire, equip, and sustain resilient space capabilities to support U.S. and allied forces.

“We need to continue refining what a field command for an acquisition organization looks like, get after developing our workforce, and focus on delivering capabilities,” said Garrant, who spoke in the Schriever Courtyard on base. The courtyard is named for Gen. Bernard Schriever, who led SSC’s predecessor organization, USAF’s Western Development Division, which was organized in 1954 as a crash effort to manage the Air Force’s ballistic missile projects.

 

“We need capabilities for the warfighter by 1 January 2026, that are fielded, tested, trained, and presented to the warfighter, in about 20 short months,” Garrant said.

Garrant came to SSC in February, assuming command from Gen. Michael Guetlein, now vice chief of space operations. His service in acquisition positions dates to 1992, when Garrant started his career as a systems engineer and program manager for the Document and Data Networks Division, National Security Agency at Fort Meade, Maryland.

 

Following that assignment, Garrant went on to serve in a variety of acquisition positions including systems engineer, program manager, program element monitor, squadron commander, senior materiel leader, deputy program executive officer, and program executive. Prior to taking command at SSC, Garrant served as the Space Force’s deputy chief of space operations, strategy, plans, programs, and requirements, at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.

The general spoke on a wide range of issues during his keynote, directly and – along with Chief Master Sgt. Jacqueline Sauvé, SSC’s senior enlisted leader – in response to questions from the audience. The two talked about matters ranging from the physical plant and infrastructure needs at SSC’s facilities to the upcoming Torrance Armed Forces Day celebration May 17-19, where Space Force will be the honored service and Garrant will serve as grand marshal of the weekend event’s annual parade.

 

Along with the commander’s address, the day included a team-building physical training exercise on base sponsored by the Guardian Resiliency Team; a “Helping Agency Fair,” with service organizations from across LAAFB and Los Angeles, ranging from the base Military and Family Readiness Center to the Federal Voting Assistance Program; and an “Open Innovation Office Hours” event hosted by SSC’s AtlasX organization for military personnel and civilian staff to come forward with ideas about improving processes at the command.

 

At the end of his talk, Garrant offered a quote from the musician and singer songwriter Roger Waters:

When asked what he's doing and why, he ignores the question and becomes abusive. He is not banned as baker. But has been relieved as baker several times as a result, see links below.

This is a new problem that apparently requires a RULE that most bakers will never need. Here it is:

Posts made to link Q drops to current events need real sauce (not just two images with zero explanation). The sauce should include a link to the post in question (from TS, etc) plus a description of why the two posts relate to one another. If timestamps are relevant, should be in Eastern Time only. Preferably they should be NOMMED by someone other than the baker at least once to be included in notables (even then, baker can say no).

These are reasonable guidelines most bakers already follow. A baker not even up to these minimal standards needs to either step up or step down. Anons who see a problem should ask about it.

If baker doesn't respond, it's legit for another baker to take over the bake. This may be easiest if there's admins around, but is justifiable with or wo/them. When Disney, Marvel Comics' parent company, acquired most of 20th Century Fox's assets back in 2019, it was only a matter of time before fans started seeing valuable properties like the "Alien" franchise seeping into its future content across all of the corporation's tentacular divisions.

 

We can just imagine dozens of creative executives concocting myriad mashups of intellectual properties before the contract ink dried — and what better medium to hatch a new crossover title than inside the pages of Marvel Comics.

 

Those nasty xenomorphs — introduced in Ridley Scott's iconic 1979 sci-fi frightfest, "Alien" — are the perfect adversaries for some of the Idea Factory's most celebrated heroes, and now we're about to see the results of those ingenious integrations.

 

Presented under Marvel's 20th Century Studios imprint, a new "Aliens vs. Avengers" miniseries arrives starting July 24, and unprepared readers are going to be strapped in for a wild ride.

 

Written by the Eisner-nominated creator Jonathan Hickman ("The Avengers," "Fantastic Four") and paired with ravishing artwork by Esad Ribić ("Thor," "Conan the Barbarian"), this cataclysmic interspecies showdown represents the very first crossover of "Aliens" and the Marvel Universe.

 

Here's the official synopsis:

 

"The four-part epic is set in a new timeline many years in the future and features older, grittier versions of Marvel characters. NEW: The man who was shot dead by Seattle Police after trying to meet up with an 11 and 7-year-old has been identified as Bruce Meneley, a former high-ranking military officer.

 

The development was first reported on by @PhotogSteve81.

 

Meneley held powerful positions with the Navy and served as a captain and doctor at Guantanamo Bay.

A new map of UFO sightings across the UK allows Brits to see how close they've been to extraterrestrial encounters to mark Alien Day today (April 26).

 

Each year, Alien Day commemorates Ridley Scott's film 'Alien'. The first Alien Day was organised by the movie's fans in New York in 2015 and it has since evolved into a worldwide event.

 

Research group UFO Identified has recorded 1,789 sightings of unexplained objects in the UK since 2020, including 395 sightings last year. The data was gathered from social media, newspaper articles, Freedom of Information requests and reports submitted directly to UFO spotter groups.

 

The group's research reveals people in the south-east have the best chance of spotting a UFO, with 233 recorded sightings since 2020. This is closely followed by the north-west (218) and the south-west (193).

 

Last year's documented sightings include 40 glowing orbs that were spotted moving in a "cross formation" over Greater Manchester. Just this week more orbs were spotted in Merseyside.

 

There was also a "flying saucer illuminated by varying red glowing spheres" spotted over Worksop in Nottinghamshire last year, as well as dark and silent "squashed triangle" seen gliding over Point Clear in Essex.

 

According to UFO Identified's research, the most likely time to spot a UFO last year was on Monday evenings between 9pm and 10pm. The most common sightings were "star-like" UFOs, followed by orbs.

 

There were 27 reports defined as "Close Encounters of the First Kind". These accounts describe UFOs seen up close, at distances no greater than 500ft.

 

Two events categorised as "Close Encounters of the Second Kind" - where UFO sightings seemed to cause a physical effect such as car malfunctions, impressions on the ground or peculiar animal reactions. Sadly there were no "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", which involve seeing an extraterrestrial being up close.

I heard a story about dogs that would 'run down the deer' and it was in a state where there are a lot of liberals so the rumor was . . .

 

one person paid one of the young men (born in the woods and accustomed to the whole backwoods way of life) to go and take care of the problem by killing that particular job.

we had a guy who couldn't see any thing wrong in any of the dogs and no one told him the real story but he heard the rumor . . .

no one shoots a dog without a very good reason, one hopes.

The reality of the mountains is what it is. If you don't like seeing deer hanging off a barn, don't go to the forest in deer hunting season.

Not a good idea to be there in deer hunting season unwares, anyway. Some of those folks can see a deer a long distance off and might take a shot not really being sure, hit the mark, and well, maybe not get caught.

when you realize that some of them need the meat for their families, being judgemental about it is rather ungentlemanly.
