Save the Children offices raided in Guatemala

Police in Guatemala raided five regional offices of British aid agency Save the Children on Monday as part of an investigation into alleged child abuse.

 

Prosecutors requested information from US authorities in April about the alleged involvement of the organisation in smuggling children across the border, according to local media.

 

Save the Children said it was "aware of the activity" at their offices, and denied the prosecutors' allegations.

 

The prosecutor in charge of the case, Rafael Curruchiche, and the country's attorney general, Consuelo Porras, have previously been sanctioned by the United States and the European Union for attacks on democracy.

 

Curruchiche said the searches were being carried out in different regions of the country as part of a "transnational investigation of great importance", in a video statement on X.

 

The prosecutor did not name the organisation in his statement - but a spokesman for his office confirmed to AFP news agency that the offices searched were those of Save the Children.

 

In a statement to the BBC, Save the Children said it was collaborating with authorities but that it has "never facilitated any transfer of children or adolescents out of Guatemala".

 

"Following previous allegations against our organisation this year, no evidence of wrongdoing was found", the organisation added.

 

Earlier this year, the aid group said it was "shocked and puzzled" after its main office was raided as part of the same case.

 

This came just days after the secretary general of Guatemala's public ministry, Ángel Pineda, wrote a letter to Texan authorities asking for support in investigating allegations that aid groups, including Save the Children, “could be participating in child trafficking operations".

 

It is unclear whether Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton responded to the request.

 

Both Pineda and Curruchiche have previously been sanctioned by the US and the European Union, accused of trying to undermine the country's democracy. The prosecutors office denied the allegations, local media reported.

 

The prosecutor's office is also said to have tried to prevent President Bernardo Arévalo, who ran on an anti-corruption message and is critical of the country's judiciary, from taking office earlier this year.

 

Guatemala's attorney general, Consuelo Porras, was barred from entering the US in 2022 after the state department said she had "repeatedly obstructed and undermined anti-corruption investigations in Guatemala". Porras denied the claim.

 

Save the Children has operated in Guatemala since 1976, after an earthquake devastated the country.

 

It added that it "will continue working to uphold children’s rights, as we have always done, maintaining the highest standards of child protection and safeguarding in all our programs".

Navy Awards GD Electric Boat $1.28B in Contracts While Service Continues Sub Negotiations

The Navy this week issued General Dynamics Electric Boat two contract modifications worth $1.28 billion to keep submarine suppliers operating while the service and the shipyard continue contract negotiations for 17 planned submarines.

 

The service issued two separate contract modifications on Oct. 8 – one for $878 million for future USS Baltimore (SSN-812) and SSN-813, both Block V Virginia-class attack submarines, and another $350 million for long lead materials for Block VI Virginia-class boats.

 

“The material being procured for the two SSNs include items such as valves, pumps, castings, forgings among other items that are required in the construction of the submarines,” Naval Sea Systems Command spokesperson Jamie Koehler told USNI News in a statement.

 

Both modifications will bolster the “furtherance of the Navy’s commitment to the health and stability of the industrial base,” according to the Oct. 8 contract announcements. The goal of the contract is to keep critical submarine suppliers operational and solvent while the Navy and EB continue to negotiate the contract for the two submarines, a source familiar with the underlying reason for the contract modification told USNI News.

More and more polling points to the possibility thatKamala Harris may lose by a significant margin in November. Donald Trump’s momentum keeps building, with nothing but tailwinds at his back.

 

The Biden family is keenly aware of all of this, and they seem to be positioning the president for the ultimate "I told you so" moment for his legacy.

 

Should Kamala Harris fall in defeat, President Biden becomes a man both wronged by a political establishment and righteous for being the one man who could defeat the GOP nominee.

 

We need not rehash the bizarre events of July 21, but it’s worth recalling that __Biden was seemingly forced out of the running for his second term, and Democratic Party power brokers (Obama, Soros, Pelosi, Schumer, etc) hastily selected VP Kamala Harris as the nominee___. Furthermore, they filled the lame-duck months on Biden’s schedule with instructions to stay quiet and soak up the sun in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

 

Since that fateful week in Delaware, Biden’s tone has changed dramatically.

 

In his rare public appearances, the president is attempting to transition into political retirement as an elder statesman, and he’s almost always doing so far removed from the instructions of his teleprompter.

 

His newfound rhetoric is far removed from his infamous verbal dumpster diving of the Biden-Trump debate (and the vast majority of his presidency).

 

He's nowlinking arms with supporters of the one-time “threat to democracy,” reframing his legacy as Scranton Joe, the bipartisan blue-collar president. He never once engaged in such deliberate bipartisan appeals, on or off script, for his entire presidency.

 

During a September visit to a fire station in Pennsylvania, the president playfully donned a Trump 2024 hat, marking the de-unification from Kamala Harris’s “threat to democracy” rhetoric against Donald Trump.

 

This week, KamalaHarris castigated former President Trump, along with Florida Governor Ron DeSantisand other political leaders who she claimed werenot taking her phone calls about hurricanes. (what other political leaders are not taking her calls?)

 

Biden, on the other hand, took to praising Republican governors for their efforts to engage in disaster preparedness and response.

 

“The governor of Florida has been cooperative. He said he has gotten all that he needs. I talked to him again yesterday and I said no, you’re doing a great job,” Biden told reporters Tuesday, “and all is being done well, thank you for it.”

An illegal immigrant accused of forcibly raping a minor in Massachusetts was released back into the community by court officials, despite an active immigration detainer against him, according to Enforcement and Removal Operations agents.

 

Maynor Francisco Hernandez-Rodas, a 38-year-old Guatemalan national, entered the U.S. illegally as a "gotaway"—someone observed crossing the border but who is not apprehended and returned—and was charged in June with aggravated forcible rape of a child in Massachusetts.

 

Immigration officers arrested Hernandez-Rodas in Lowell, Massachusetts, on September 20, according to a statement from Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston. He is currently being held in federal custody.

 

"Maynor Francisco Hernandez-Rodas stands accused of horrific crimes against a Massachusetts child," ERO Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia Hyde said in a statement on Tuesday. "He represents a significant danger to the children of our community that we will not tolerate."

Hernandez-Rodas was arrested by Lowell police on June 20, 2024, for aggravated rape of a child and rape of a child with force, officials said.

 

Authorities lodged an immigration detainer against Hernandez-Rodas on June 28.

 

He was arraigned in Middlesex County Superior Court on charges of aggravated rape of a child by force and rape of a child by force on September 4.

 

According to Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston, officials at Middlesex County Superior Court "ignored ERO Boston's immigration detainer and released Hernandez-Rodas from custody on an unknown date."

‘Terrifying incident’

A 24-year-old man is accused of hiding in a women’s bathroom stall at the Museum of Science and assaulting a 15-year-old girl from behind,according to the Suffolk DA’s Office.

 

The Somerville man, Yandri Hernandez, is being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing after the alleged assault in the Museum of Science bathroom.

 

Hernandez has been charged with kidnapping of a child, strangulation or suffocation, and assault and battery.

 

Massachusetts State Police responded to the Museum of Science for an assault in a bathroom on Sunday at around 12:41 p.m.

 

The victim, a 15-year-old girl, reported being at the Museum of Science with her friend when she entered the bathroom on the first level as her friend waited outside.

 

The girl told police that when she left the bathroom stall to wash her hands, she felt a hand come around her face and cover her month. Initially she thought it was her friend but saw a man, later identified as Hernandez, behind her.

 

The girl said Hernandez did not speak, but tried to restrain her. The girl was able to scream and quickly ran out of the bathroom. Hernandez walked out of the bathroom immediately after the girl and left the scene.

 

A witness in the bathroom told police she noticed the first and last stalls occupied. When the witness entered her stall, she noticed black-and-white sneakers in an adjoining stall that appeared to be “abnormal in size for a female.”

 

The witness heard one occupant exit the stall followed by the other occupant. The witness then heard muffled screaming and some sort of physical altercation. Both parties were gone when the witness exited the stall.

Video footage shows a man entering the museum at 10:58 a.m. wearing all-black clothing with black-and-white sneakers. The man is seen sitting in a lobby near the bathroom for about one hour before entering the bathroom. State Police investigators disseminated still images of the man to local police departments.

 

On Monday, State Police received a phone call from Cambridge Police, who were able to identify the man as Hernandez from a distinct tattoo on his left forearm.

 

Hernandez was spotted in Somerville the following day and placed into custody without incident by State Police.

 

“This is a terrifying incident for anyone, particularly for a teenager simply enjoying an outing with a friend at a popular destination,” Suffolk DA Kevin Hayden said in a statement. “This young woman’s description of her attacker, along with top-notch identification work based on the images disseminated by investigators, led to the defendant being spotted and arrested just days after the incident.”

Boston ManCharged in Elder Fraud Conspiracy That Defrauded Elderly Victim of Over $400,000

BOSTON – A South Boston man has been arrested and charged in connection with a scheme that defrauded a 75-year-old man from Berkshire County, Mass., of approximately $420,000.

 

Urvishkumar Vipulkumar Patel, 21,was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Patel was arrested on Oct. 7, 2024 and subsequently released by the Court on conditions including GPS monitoring and orders that he remain in Massachusetts.

 

According to the charging documents, in or around June 2024, the victim received a pop-up message on his computer claiming that his computer was frozen. The message contained a phone number, which the victim believed to be associated with Microsoft, and directed the victim to call for assistance. The victim then called the phone number listed in the pop-up and allegedly spoke with an individual before being transferred to another individual who called himself, “Sam Wilson.”

 

It is alleged that Wilson claimed to be a federal agent with the U.S. Treasury Department and purported to confirm the victim’s name and address. When the victim stated that was not the correct address, Wilson provided additional addresses until the victim identified his correct address. Wilson then allegedly told the victim that the victim’s name and address were listed as being involved in a money laundering scheme and that the “Treasury” showed a number of houses had been purchased in the United States and Russia in the victim’s name. Wilson allegedly told the victim that he was going to help him get out of this trouble and would speak to a judge but that, in the meantime, the victim needed to safeguard his money from being further implicated in the supposed money laundering scheme. Specifically, Wilson allegedly told the victim he should withdraw cash from his bank and send it to the Treasury Department, where it would be kept in a lock box until the victim was cleared of the scheme. Wilson also allegedly cautioned that the bank would not let the victim withdraw all of his money at once – directing the victim to make the withdrawals in smaller amounts and send it to Wilson at the “Treasury” in installments.

 

On approximately five separate occasions over the course of three months, the victim withdrew and provided approximately $420,000 in cash to several individuals he believed to be associated with “Sam Wilson.” On each occasion, Wilson asked the victim how much he could withdraw from his bank account, directed the victim to place the cash in a taped box with the victim’s own name and address written on it. Wilson also allegedly told the victim a specific date and time at which he would send a courier for the cash. On each occasion, the courier would pull alongside the curb in front of the victim’s house, lower one of the passenger side windows and provide a prearranged “PIN” passcode to the victim. The victim would then place the box of cash into the courier’s vehicle who would then drive away.

 

The victim’s sister reported this activity to law enforcement on Oct. 1, 2024. According to the charging documents, on Oct. 7, 2024, Patel served as the courier waiting outside of the victim’s home and was approached by an undercover officer posing as the victim. It is alleged that, after receiving the prearranged “PIN” passcode from Patel, the undercover officer placed the box into Patel’s vehicle and Patel quickly drove away. He was immediately apprehended.

At the time of his arrest, Patel was allegedly driving a rental car and was actively engaged in a WhatsApp call on his cell phone. Patel allegedly told law enforcement that he had been collecting packages for weeks at the direction of another individual in exchange for payment. Patel also allegedly told law enforcement that he would deliver each package to a prearranged location before receiving his payment.

Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy and Jodi Cohen, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Division made the announcement. Valuable assistance was provided by the North Adams Police Department and the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kaitlin Brown of the Worcester Branch Office is prosecuting the case.

Russia has not received nor seen any signals from Ukraine suggesting that it is ready for a ceasefire, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told RIA Novosti on Thursday. He was speaking after Italy's Corriere della Sera claimed that Kiev is leaning toward a truce along the current front line in exchange for Western security guarantees.

 

Dmitry Litvin, who serves as a communications adviser to Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, also denied the allegation, speaking to Ukrainian media. “We have the ‘peace formula’ which says clearly what Ukraine views as a just peace,” the official stressed.

 

Ahead of the Ukrainian leader’s upcoming visit to Rome, part of a tour of several European capitals,Corriere della Sera reported that for political reasons Zelensky cannot officially relinquish Kiev’s claim to the Donetsk and LuganskPeople’s Republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions as well as Crimea, which are all part of the Russian Federation and entirely or partially under Moscow's control.

 

However, the Ukrainian leader “would be ready for a ceasefire along the current line - without recognizing a new official border - in exchange for some Western commitments,” according to the Italian daily.

 

The article alleged that Kiev could settle for US security guarantees, similar to those provided to Japan, South Korea and the Philippines. As for Italy, Germany and France, Zelensky reportedly hopes to receive assurances from these countries that Ukraine will have fast-track accession to the European Union.

 

Corriere della Sera attributed the supposed softening of the Ukrainian leader’s stance to the accelerating Russian advance in Donbass in September, as well as the fact that the Ukrainian military is currently outnumbered and outgunned.

 

On Tuesday, Bloomberg, citing anonymous NATO officials, also reported that Zelensky could have adopted a “more flexible approach” recently.

 

The article suggested that Ukrainian officials had been more open to the idea of concessions to Russia, though it didn’t specify what they might be. The media outlet also named the provision of Western security guarantees as one of the prerequisites that would convince Kiev to cease hostilities along the current front line.

 

In his public statements, Zelensky still insists that any talks with the Kremlin can only start after the complete withdrawal of Russian forces from all the territories Kiev has lost to Moscow since 2014.

 

Russia has dismissed Ukraine’s ‘peace formula,’ with President Vladimir Putin saying in June that he was ready to declare a truce as long as Kiev recognizes the new “reality on the ground” and gives a legally binding commitment to neutrality, which would preclude its accession to NATO.

As the foreign support for the Ukrainian war effort diminishes by the day, coupled with the lack of material conditions (such as missiles, drones, artillery, etc) and – most importantly the depletion of the manpower involved in the fight, the situation is getting close to the point of no return.

 

Barely a week has passed since the conquest of Ugledar, and now the Russian Federation forces are already inside the bastion city of Toretsk, a testimony to the depletion of Kiev’s defenses in the vital Donetsk region.

 

Russian sources report that Ukrainian defenders are getting pushed out of Toretsk, another critically important city in the Donbas.

 

Russian forces have reached the center of Toretsk and the area of the administrative quarter, the school and the police buildings of the city.

 

The indoor market has also been reached, and there’s heavy fighting inside the city.

 

The geographical location of Toretsk makes it the perfect fortress, as the city was built on a hill surrounded by water obstacles from three sides.

 

Sputnik on Telegram reported:

“‘Toretsk is a very important hub from the point of view of logistical and tactical support for [Ukrainian] troops’, Reserve Colonel Rustem Klupov, a veteran of military intelligence and Hero of Russia, tells Sputnik.

 

‘This is a heavily fortified area, which they will most likely hold until the end in order to contain our forces as much as possible, because if they do not contain them there, then the entire [Ukrainian] defense will crumble’.”

 

The Colonel notes that the Russian advances towards Toretsk have been pushed since spring, with the end goal of speeding up the liberation of the Donetsk region.

 

“‘Toretsk is already in an operational semi-encirclement’, says Klupov, adding that the city’s liberation will also curb Ukraine’s ability to shell Donetsk, Gorlovka and other residential areas of the [Donetsk region].”

 

Klupov is deeply critical of the Ukrainian military leadership, saying that its incompetence provides additional advantages for the Russian offensive.

 

“‘The Ukrainian side is suffering very serious losses in command personnel. And they cannot fill this gap… At the operational-strategic and strategic level, they often undermine themselves by top brass replacements. They replaced [Commander-in-Chief Valery] Zaluzhny with [Oleksandr] Syrsky and the situation at the front has not changed at all or maybe it has even gotten worse’, the pundit concludes.”

 

It is estimated that at this point, half of the city is under Russian control.

 

The conquest of Toretsk is another step in the crumbling of the Ukrainian defenses in the east that has been accelerating of late.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk’s political action committee is offering starting wages of $30 an hour to individuals seeking to increase voter registration and turnout, the PAC’s website shows.

 

"JOIN OUR TEAM," Musk-founded America PAC reads on its website. "Email us if you are interested in working on increasing voter registration and voter turnout. Pay starts at $30 per hour, with bonuses for performance."

 

Musk endorsed former President Trump earlier this summer as the 45th president seeks to again win the Oval Office. The Tesla founder joined Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday evening as Trump made a historic return to the town following an assassination attempt that left him bloodied and injured on July 13 during a rally.

 

"I think it’s the most important election of our lifetime. This is no ordinary election. The other side wants to take away your freedom of speech. They want to take away your right to bear arms… They want to take away your right to vote effectively," Musk told the crowd on Saturday.

 

Musk repeatedly encouraged the crowds to get everyone in their social circles and beyond to register and vote come Election Day. "And honestly, you want to just be a pest. Just be a pest to everyone. You know, people on the street everywhere," he said. "Fight, fight, fight, vote, vote, vote," Musk added, referring to how Trump shouted "fight, fight, fight" to the crowds after he was shot in the ear in July.

 

His comments follow closely with the mission of his America PAC, which says it works to promote "free speech, free markets, and a merit-based society." Musk launched the super PAC’s website last month to bolster canvassing efforts in key battleground states like Nevada, Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina, as well as in individual competitive districts across the country.

 

The PAC was officially formed earlier in the summer, with Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings from late last month showing the America PAC has already invested at least $2.4 million in more than a dozen key congressional races. Musk said in July he planned to commit about $45 million a month to the super PAC.

 

Social media commenters took note of the canvassing efforts through the America PAC, underscoring the high hourly pay, which is a more than a 300% increase compared to the federal hourly minimum wage of $7.25.

 

Turning Point Action and America PAC joined forces in Wisconsin, Politico reported last week, to help bolster the Republican Party's get-out-the-vote ground game.

 

"We’ve always known bodies in the field equals ballots in the box," Andrew Kolvet, a spokesperson for Turning Point, told Politico. "This partnership will be a major lift to our efforts to ensure our ballot chasers are able to maximize their impact in Wisconsin."

 

Musk, who has described himself as a "historically moderate Democrat," hosted Trump for a two-hour conversation streamed on X in August that included the 45th president speaking at length about immigration woes, spiraling inflation issues, the assassination attempt against his life, and policies he would implement if he wins on Nov. 5.

Smart TVs are spying on everyone

 

Regulators know this is a nightmare and have done little to stop it. Privacy advocacy group wants that to change

 

Smart TVs are watching their viewers and harvesting their data to benefit brokers using the same ad technology that denies privacy on the internet.

 

In a report titled "How TV Watches Us: Commercial Surveillance in the Streaming Era," the Center for Digital Democracy (CDD) outlines the expansive "commercial surveillance system" that has infested Smart TVs – aka connected TVs or CTVs – and video streaming services.

 

"The US CTV streaming business has deliberately incorporated many of the data-surveillance marketing practices that have long undermined privacy and consumer protection in the 'older' online world of social media, search engines, mobile phones and video services such as YouTube," the report [PDF] declares.

 

"Millions of Americans are being forced to accept unfair terms in order to access video programming, which threatens their privacy and may also narrow what information they access – including the quality of the content itself."

 

The report calls out the proliferation of FAST (Free Advertiser-Supported TV) channels like Tubi which, through its Tubi360 brand and content studio, "enables marketers to engage in enhanced product placement by incorporating their brands directly into programming content to target individual viewers."

 

It also catalogs various mechanisms used for profiling viewers and presenting them with personalized ads. These include: cookieless IDs; identity graphs that combine various IDs to link activity across devices and locations; automatic content recognition (ACR) software that analyzes what's on-screen; and AI-based ad targeting that "analyzes a scene's text, images, and sentiment, determines an emotional score, and then places ads with a similar emotional score."

 

"CTV has become a privacy nightmare for viewers," lamented Jeff Chester, executive director of CDD and co-author of the report, in a statement. "It is now a core asset for the vast system of digital surveillance that shapes most of our online experiences."

 

The CDD has presented its report to the US Federal Trade Commission, Federal Communications Commission, and California privacy regulators in the hope these watchdog agencies will do something about an issue that has been simmering for years.

 

The FTC, for example, held a Smart TV Workshop in 2016 to explore the issue. "In 2016, virtually all television delivery systems – smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, apps, and even old-fashioned set top boxes – track consumers' viewing habits, and sometimes in new and unexpected ways," the agency noted at the time.

 

The following year, the agency settled with CTV maker Vizio for $2.2 million over allegations that its smart TVs "capture second-by-second information". Info captured included videos viewed, which were allegedly matched to "specific demographic information to the viewing data, such as sex, age, income, marital status, household size, education level, home ownership, and household value." The combined data set is then sold to third parties for ad targeting.

Muslims also turn toward the Kaaba in Mecca whenever they pray.

 

A spokesperson for the City of Sydney Council told Daily Mail Australia it was the third year the replica had been installed as part of a cultural celebration.

 

'Sydney is a global, multicultural city that celebrates our diverse communities,' a City of Sydney spokesperson said.
