Multiple current and former senior Justice Department andFBI officials have begun reaching out to lawyers in anticipation of being criminally investigated by the Trump administration,according to three people with knowledge of their deliberations.

 

Following Trump’s decisive election victory, many Justice Departmentofficials and career staffers were already nervous about the possibility that they would be targeted by Trump loyalists, particularly members of Congress. But the selection of former Rep. Matt Gaetz, a firebrand Trump ally who was the subject of a recent FBI investigation, to lead the department has sharply increased the sense of alarm, the sources said.

 

“Everything we did was aboveboard,” said a former senior FBI official who has started contacting lawyers because he expects to be prosecuted himself. “But this is a different world.”

 

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymityout of fear of becoming even more of a target, doesn’t believe any attempt to prosecute him will be successful. Judges and juries have the power to throw out cases or find defendants innocent if they deem prosecutions to be baseless.

 

But like many other current and former Justice Department officials,he is bracing for a potentially long and costly legal battle, as well as the possibility of protracted congressional investigations, after Trump takes office in January.

 

Career FBI employees are especially vulnerable, the official added. Since they make less money than they would in the private sector, they rely on the pensions they receive after 20 years.

 

“Agents have to do 20 years,” the former senior FBI official said. “These people don’t have options.”

 

A former senior Justice Department official who served during Trump’s first term saidhe, too, saw Gaetz’s nomination as a sign of the seriousness of the president-elect’s vowto exact revenge on those who investigated him. “He needs to be able to control the department, which he can do through a loyal AG beholden to him,” the former Justice Department official said.

 

Gaetz, who was the subject of a federal sex trafficking investigation that ended without charges, “understands that he owes everything to Trump, who can protect Gaetz as well through his pardon power,” the former official added. “Trump is confident that Gaetz will do whatever Trump tells him to do.”

 

Trump and his supporters have consistently argued that all of the criminal investigations against him have been politically motivated, and that Justice Department and FBI officials deserve to be prosecuted.

 

Weeks before Election Day, Steven Cheung, a spokesman for Trump, called for the Jan. 6 charges and all federal and state criminal charges against Trump to be dropped.

 

“This entire case is a sham and a partisan, Unconstitutional Witch Hunt that should be dismissed entirely — as should ALL of the remaining Democrat hoaxes,” Cheung said.

 

Legal experts say Trump’s goal in investigating his investigators is simple: intimidate anyone who dares to probe Trump’s conduct.

 

“Trump aims to neutralize sources of power that may impede him,” said Stephen Gillers, an ethics professor at New York University Law School. “That includes the law and legal institutions. He will tolerate no interference when the department’s decisions will benefit Trump and his buddies or when its power can be deployed to retaliate against his enemies.”

 

Shock inside the DOJ

 

Justice Department officials,including Attorney General Merrick Garland, were shocked by Trump’s decisive election win. For the last four years, Garland has argued that strictly following post-Watergate norms that require the Justice Department to work in a nonpartisan manner in criminal investigations would restore public trust in the Justice Department.

The statute says it is illegal for anyone to deny a person a federal right, such as voting. Smith argued that Trump’s attempt to reverse the 2020 election results denied voters in multiple states the right to have their votes accurately counted.

 

Ilya Somin, a law professor at George Mason University,said he did not see how Smith could be charged with denying Trump a federal right.

 

“I think that’s absurd,” he said. “I don’t see any legitimate charge that can be brought against Smith.”

 

Somin warned that a prosecutor can investigate an individual over a long period and find that they had broken unrelated federal laws that cover minor offenses.

 

If Trump’s attorney general, for example, appoints a special prosecutor toexamine the federal criminal investigations of Trump, they could find that a Justice Department or FBI official broke a federal law that does not relate to the Trump probes, such as a tax or drug infraction.

 

“If you think about it, a majority of adult Americans have probably violated federal laws, such as smoking marijuana, at some point in their lives,” Somin said.

 

Special counsel Robert Mueller, during his investigation of whether Trump campaign officials coordinated with Russia during the 2016 campaign,charged multiple Trump associates with unrelated crimes. Paul Manafort, Trump’s campaign chairman, was sentenced to just under four years in prisonafter being convicted of tax and bank fraud.

 

A special counsel appointed byAttorney General William Barr, John Durham, then spent years scrutinizing the actions of the CIA and FBI in connection with Russia’s 2016 election interference efforts,only to net a single guilty plea from an FBI lawyer who lied on a document. (Because Barr refused to prosecute all of those with crimes, it was intended to be a exercise and futility, and scam the People.)

 

But many of those investigated by Durham had to spend thousands of dollars on legal fees.Now, a new group of Justice Department and FBI officials are facing the prospect of hefty legal fees as well.

 

Gillers, the NYU professor, said that he believes Trump’s nomination of Gaetz was the beginning, not the end, of his efforts to exact revenge on the department.

 

“Elevating Gaetz is in part payback for Jack Smith’s two indictments,” Gillers said. “The Justice Department is Trump’s white whale, and like Captain Ahab, Trump is determined to get even.”

HELSINKI (AP) — A submarine data communications cable across the Baltic Sea between Finland and Germany has broken and the cause for the disruption is being investigated, Finnish authorities said Monday.

 

The Finnish state-controlled data services provider, Cinia, said “a fault” was detected Monday in the C-Lion1 cable that runs nearly 1.200 kilometers (746 miles) from the Finnish capital, Helsinki, to the German port city of Rostock.

 

Cinia said Finland’s international data and telecommunications connections are secured by running them through several routes, and the effects of a single cable failure would depend on the security level of service providers’ connections.

 

The C-Lion1, commissioned in 2016, is Finland’s only data communications cable that runs from the Nordic country directly to central Europe, according to Finnish public broadcaster YLE.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump's choice of Matt Gaetz to be attorney general has many Justice Department employees reeling, worried not only about their own jobs but the future of the agency that the Trump loyalist has railed against.

 

The president-elect's pick of the Florida Republican sent a shock throughout the Cabinet department, considering Gaetz's lack of experience in law enforcement and the fact that he was once the subject of a federal sex trafficking investigation. The names of well-regarded veteran lawyers had circulated as possible contenders for the job, but Gaetz's selection was broadly interpreted as an indication of the premium that Trump places on personal loyalty and Trump's desire to have a disruptor lead a department that for years investigated and ultimately indicted him.

 

Career lawyers at the department interviewed by The Associated Press, all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity becausethey were not authorized to share their feelings publicly, described a widespread sense of being stunned by the nomination — even outrage. They spoke of being flooded with calls and messages from colleagues as soon as the news broke.

 

Some inside the department were not immediately sure that Gaetz, who graduated law school in 2007 but has spent most of his career as a lawmaker, including in Congress, was even a lawyer. Andsome are already looking for new jobs as concerns grow over Gaetz’s rhetoric about going after the “deep state."

 

Gaetz has claimed the department is “corrupt and highly political,” and strongly criticized the federal prosecutions of Trump and the Jan. 6 rioters. He also has suggested abolishing two agencies he would oversee as attorney general, the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. He would arrive in the job without the legal experience of his predecessors, including the current attorney general, Merrick Garland, who as a high-ranking Justice Department official supervised the prosecution of the Oklahoma City bombing case before becoming a federal appeals court judge.

But one Justice Department lawyer was less bothered by the change, saying a leadership shakeup could be a welcome reset given the “mistrust from both the left and the right” that the attorney said wasjustified after a tumultuous stretch of politically charged investigations that have divided public opinion and put federal law enforcement on the defensive...

 

More recently, a special counsel was named to investigate President Joe Biden's handling of classified information, an inquiry that closed without charges, while a separate special counsel investigation into Trump's retention of top secret documents and efforts to overturn the 2020 election produced federal indictments against Trump that now are in line to be erased.

 

It is unclear whether Gaetz has enough Republican support in the Senate to be confirmed.

“Basically, he was totally innocent. He did nothing wrong here,” Parlatore said. “We went through a mediation and ultimately settled for far less than what she wanted. And that should have completely buried it.”

 

Last week, the Trump transition team received a memo from a friend of the accuser who detailed the accusations against Trump’s surprise pick to lead the Department of Defense, the Washington Post reported.

 

The alleged incident took place on Oct. 7, 2017, in Monterey, California, and involved an unidentified staffer at a conservative group who accused Hegseth, now 44, of raping her in his hotel room after a boozy night at the bar. She was in her 30s at the time.

 

Hegseth had been staying at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa at the time after delivering an address at the California Federation of Republican Women conference.

 

Parlatore, who declined to divulge the amount paid or the identity of the woman, claimed she was sober and pursued Hegseth.

 

“He had way too many drinks, and according to video surveillance and eyewitness testimony, this woman who was sober took advantage of him, and she was the aggressor,” he said.

 

“She took him by the arm and she led him up to his room.”

 

But the memo of the incident sent to the transition team, which The Post has not independently obtained, alleged that she was responsible for ensuring that Hegseth made it back to his room and to the airport the next day, according to the Washington Post.

 

She was staying in the hotel with her husband and children at the time. After receiving texts from two women at the bar who claimed “Hegseth was getting pushy about his interest in taking them upstairs to his room,” she decided to intervene, per the memo.

 

The accuser “had a moment of hazy memory of being raped the night before, and had a panic attack,” according to the memo.

 

A friend of the accuser said she had seen her at events over the past 15 years but had “never known her to be irresponsible, drunk, or ever of questionable character.”

 

Parlatore alleged that the accuser was simply trying to save face with her husband.

 

“She woke up to a whole bunch of texts from herhusband saying, ‘Why didn’t you come back to our room?’ Afterward, she had to come back and lie,” he added, citing a police report that is not publicly available.

Days after the encounter, the accuser filed a complaint to the police, who investigated the situation andultimately, the local district attorney declined to pursue charges.

Hegseth, an Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, is widely seen as an unconventional choice to take charge at the Pentagon given his lack of experience managing a large organization.

 

Trump, 78,chose Hegseth, who has degrees from Princeton and Harvard, with the intention of dramatically shaking up the Pentagon, and eliminating diversity, equity and inclusion practices from America’s armed forces.

 

So far the president-elect is sticking with his DOD nominee amid the accusations, which caught his transition team by surprise.

 

“President Trump is nominating high-caliber and extremely qualified candidates to serve in his Administration,” Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung said in a statement.

 

“Mr. Hegseth has vigorously denied any and all accusations, and no charges were filed.We look forward to his confirmation as United States Secretary of Defense so he can get started on Day One to Make America Safe and Great Again.”

 

The Post was unable to identify the accuser to reach out for her version of events.

As his son sits down today with Mexican President Vicente Fox, former president George Bush will have an opportunity for some Latin American diplomacy of his own, meeting in Caracas with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

The visit with Chavez was arranged by a leading Venezuelan businessman, Gustavo Cisneros, who is hosting Bush on a private fishing vacation in Venezuela's Amazon region. Chavez announced the meeting, to be held this morning at the presidential residence La Casona, on his weekly radio program last weekend.

 

Officials in the White House, the State Department and former president Bush's office in Houston would not characterize the meeting as official. "It is simply a courtesy call," a Houston spokesman said.

 

But the visit has undeniable symbolic importance and has given rise to speculation particularly in Venezuela that "Bush 41," as the 41st president is known around the White House, is assuming a new role as diplomatic envoy for "Bush 43."

 

At a conference last weekend in Cancun with his counterparts from Mexico and Colombia, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jose Vincente Rangel (who yesterday changed jobs and became defense minister) mentioned the visit approvingly. Chavez noted on the radio that the man with whom he would be "chatting" is "the father of the current president, George W."

The United States and Venezuela have dealt with each other warily in recent years, especially since Chavez, a former paratrooper and admirer of Fidel Castro, took office in December 1998.

But relations have started to improve on all fronts in recent days. ABB has upgraded the variable speed drive (VSD) at NASA’s National Transonic Facility (NTF) in Langley Research Center, Virginia, ensuring the wind tunnel remains operational for at least another 10 years.

The modernization is part of an ABB Motion OneCare service agreement aimed at enhancing the facility’s reliability and lifecycle value.

 

The NTF wind tunnel, critical for optimizing aircraft design and fuel efficiency, replicates flight conditions at high altitudes and near the speed of sound.

Since its commissioning, it has played a pivotal role in testing aircraft like the Boeing 777 and components of the Space Shuttle.

The facility features a 101-megawatt drive, originally supplied by ABB in 1997, which remains one of the most powerful of its kind globally.

 

By 2021, NASA identified the need to replace aging components of the medium voltage drive.

ABB specialists evaluated the system, developing a solution that replaced outdated parts with modern, high-efficiency components.

The project was designed to minimize disruption, waste, and logistical challenges while enhancing the system’s performance and reliability.

 

“NASA entrusted ABB’s expertise and advanced technology to maintain the high reliability and uptime of the NTF for its testing programs,” said Oswald Deuchar, Head of Modernization Services at ABB Motion.

“This upgrade supports NASA’s operational objectives and showcases a circular, sustainable approach to asset modernization.”

 

The upgrade was the first project executed under NASA’s ABB Motion OneCare service agreement, which also covers maintenance and spare parts.

Such agreements allow organizations like NASA to customize service bundles, optimizing the lifecycle of their drives, motors, and generators.

A Russian kamikaze drone has destroyed a US-made HIMARS multiple-launch rocket system in Zaporozhye Region, Telegram channel ‘The Wrong Side’ has reported, citing an anonymous source. The story has been circulated by Russian media outlets.

 

The US first supplied Ukraine with the system, which boasts a longer range and higher precision than its Soviet-era equivalents, back in June 2022. Since then, Washington has repeatedlyreplenished Kiev’s stocks. The M142 HIMARS is capable of firing various types of munitions, including GPS-guided GMLRS rockets and ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles.

 

In a post on Monday, ‘The Wrong Side’ Telegram channel – a pro-Moscow outlet that reports on hostilities in Ukraine – published a short undated video clippurportedly showing the moment a Russian Lancet drone hit a Ukrainian HIMARS near the village of Novosoloshino in Zaporozhye Region. The US-made launcher was apparently on the move as part of a convoy when it was struck. The extent of the damage is not clear from the footage, which appears to have been shot from another UAV.

 

The Telegram channel quoted its unnamed source as saying the HIMARS launcher had recently relocated to the region, and that Russian surveillance teams quickly established its route. According to the source,the system caught fire after the strike, but did not explode, as it was apparently not loaded at the time. The post added that after the successful kill, the Russian drones moved on to pursue another high-priority target elsewhere.

 

In its daily report on Sunday, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that Ukrainian casualties in the past 24 hours had exceeded 1,500 along the frontline. In addition, Russian forces obliterated multiple pieces of Ukrainian hardware in the Donetsk People’s Republic, including two US-made M113 armored personnel carriers, a Polish-made Krab self-propelled 155mm artillery gun, several ammunition depots, and Soviet-designed artillery and electronic warfare systems.

Moscow’s position on the issue was formulated clearly earlier this year by President Vladimir Putin, who has said that attacks along the lines requested by Zelensky would be impossible without the direct contribution of Western intelligence and military expertise, Peskov stated.If conducted, such strikes would mean that “NATO nations are at war with Russia,” he warned.

 

When asked whether President-elect Donald Trump would reverse the decision when he takes office in January, Peskov declined to comment directly. Instead, he warned that if media reports are confirmed, “that would certainly be a qualitatively new spiral of escalation of tensions and a qualitatively new situation in terms of US involvement in this conflict.”

 

Trump claimed on his campaign trail that he could end the Ukraine crisis in 24 hours, if elected. The president-elect’s supporters have accused Biden of undermining his future policies by escalating the conflict. Voters have given Trump a mandate to disengage from foreign wars, Rep. That’s a problem because this vital system redistributes heat around the world, influencing both temperatures and rainfall.

 

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation funnels heat northwards through the Atlantic Ocean and is crucial for controlling climate and marine ecosystems.

It’s weaker now than at any other time in the past 1,000 years, and global warming could be to blame. But climate models have struggled to replicate the changes observed to date – until now.

Our modelling suggests the recent weakening of the oceanic circulation can potentially be explained if meltwater from the Greenland ice sheet and Canadian glaciers is taken into account.

 

Our results show the Atlantic overturning circulation is likely to become a third weaker than it was 70 years ago at 2°C of global warming.

This would bring big changes to the climate and ecosystems, including faster warming in the southern hemisphere, harsher winters in Europe, and weakening of the northern hemisphere’s tropical monsoons.

Our simulations also show such changes are likely to occur much sooner than others had suspected.

 

The Atlantic ocean circulation has been monitored continuously since 2004. But a longer-term view is necessary to assess potential changes and their causes.

There are various ways to work out what was going before these measurements began. One technique is based on sediment analyses.

These estimates suggest the Atlantic meridional circulation is the weakest it has been for the past millennium, and about 20% weaker since the middle of the 20th century.

 

Evidence suggests the Earth has already warmed 1.5ºC since the industrial revolution.

The rate of warming has been nearly four times faster over the Arctic in recent decades.

High temperatures are melting Arctic sea ice, glaciers and the Greenland ice sheet. Since 2002, Greenland lost 5,900 billion tonnes (gigatonnes) of ice.

To put that into perspective, imagine if the whole state of New South Wales was covered in ice 8 metres thick.

 

This fresh meltwater flowing into the subarctic ocean is lighter than salty seawater. So less water descends to the ocean depths.

This reduces the southward flow of deep and cold waters from the Atlantic.

It also weakens the Gulf Stream, which is the main pathway of the northward return flow of warm waters at the surface.

 

The Gulf Stream is what gives Britain mild winters compared to other places at the same distance from the north pole such as Saint-Pierre and Miquelon in Canada.

Our new research shows meltwater from the Greenland ice sheet and Arctic glaciers in Canada is the missing piece in the climate puzzle.

When we factor this into simulations, using an Earth system model and a high-resolution ocean model, slowing of the oceanic circulation reflects reality.

Our research confirms the Atlantic overturning circulation has been slowing down since the middle of the 20th century. It also offers a glimpse of the future.

 

The latest climate projections suggest the Atlantic overturning circulation will weaken by about 30% by 2060.

But these estimates do not take into account the meltwater that runs into the subarctic ocean.

The Greenland ice sheet will continue melting over the coming century, possibly raising global sea level by about 10 cm.

If this additional meltwater is included in climate projections, the overturning circulation will weaken faster. It could be 30% weaker by 2040. That’s 20 years earlier than initially projected.

 

Such a rapid decrease in the overturning circulation over coming decades will disrupt climate and ecosystems. Expect harsher winters in Europe, and drier conditions in the northern tropics.

The southern hemisphere, including Australia and southern South America, may face warmer and wetter summers.

Our climate has changed dramatically over the past 20 years. More rapid melting of the ice sheets will accelerate further disruption of the climate system.

This means we have even less time to stabilise the climate. So it is imperative that humanity acts to reduce emissions as fast as possible.

SpaceX launches mystery ‘Optus-X’ on Falcon 9 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center

SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket at sunset with a payload that has been shrouded in secrecy to the point of not disclosing any specifics of the mission, and not using its original name.

All regulatory filings and U.S. government agencies, like the Space Force and the Federal Aviation Administration, call the payload ‘Optus-X,’ while SpaceX calls the mission ‘TD7.’

SpaceX’s commentator noted that it was a communications satellite during the company’s livestream.

 

Liftoff from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on Sunday, Nov. 17, happened at 5:28 p.m. EST (2228 UTC).

With this launch, SpaceX tied the total number of Space Shuttle launches from Launch Complex 39A with just its Falcon 9 rocket at 82 launches each.

SpaceX is also close to eclipsing the total number of launches from NASA at that pad.

 

NASA launched a total of 94 missions (82 Space Shuttle and 12 Saturn 5) from LC-39A and to date, SpaceX launched 93 missions (81 Falcon 9 and 11 Falcon Heavy).

The Falcon 9 first stage booster for this mission, tail number B1077 in the SpaceX fleet, launched for a 16th time.

It previously supported the launches of three missions to the International Space Station (Crew-5, CRS-28 and Cygnus NG-20), GPS 3 Space Vehicle 06 and nine previous Starlink missions.

 

Nearly nine minutes after liftoff, B1077 touched down on the SpaceX droneship, ‘A Shortfall of Gravitas.’

This was the 85th booster landing on ASOG and the 369th booster landing to date.

 

Secret payload

The payload flying on the mission dubbed ‘TD7’ on SpaceX’s webpage headed to a geosynchronous transfer orbit, but timing of deployment was not disclosed prior to the launch.

A number of publications have offered speculation regarding the functionality of the Optus-X spacecraft, claiming that it is the fulfillment of a contract announced in 2022 between Northrop Grumman and SpaceLogistics for a Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) spacecraft on behalf of Optus Networks Party Limited (Optus), an Australian telecommunications company.

 

However, Spaceflight Now understands that Sunday’s mission is not the execution of that contract. SpaceX affirmed during its broadcast that the payload was a communications satellite.

Filings with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) state that Optus is a subsidiary of Singtel Optus Pty. Ltd., which in turn is a subsidiary of Singapore Telecom Australia Investments Pty. Ltd., which is in turn is a subsidiary of SingTel Australia Investment Ltd., a British Virgin Islands investment holding company.

 

The name ‘Optus-X’ was referenced by the FAA in its flight schedule and by the U.S. Space Force when making its launch weather forecast.

The name also appeared in a FCC filing in late October relating to the use of an Intelsat ground station for post-launch checkouts:

 

“On October 28, 2024, Intelsat License LLC was granted special temporary authority for 30 days, beginning on October 28, 2024 through November 26, 2024, to operate its Ka-band antenna in Nuevo, CA, to provide launch and early orbit phase (LEOP) services to communicate with the Optus X satellite at the 29.625 GHz and 29.630 GHz (Earth-to-space) and 19.825 GHz and 19.830 GHz (space-to-Earth) center frequencies.”

 

In the letter requesting that special temporary authority (STA) dated Sept. 24, 2024, from W. Ray Rutngamlug, Intelsat’s Associate General Counsel, to FCC Secretary Marlene Dortch, Rutngamlug stated in a footnote that Optus X will operate at the 87.75 degrees east longitude.

 

“Grant of this STA request will allow Intelsat to help launch the Optus X satellite,” Rutngamlug wrote.

“This will allow Optus X to provide capacity at the nominal 88.0° E.L. location and thereby promotes the public interest.”

 

Rutngamlug also confirmed Northrop Grumman’s role in the mission.

 

“Intelsat clarifies that during the Optus X mission, Northrop Grumman will serve as the mission manager,” he wrote. “Northrop Grumman will build and send the commands to the Intelsat antenna, which will process and execute the commands. Telemetry received by Intelsat will be forwarded to Northrop Grumman.”

 

A Northrop Grumman official referred questions about the mission to Optus, which has not responded to Spaceflight Now’s requests for additional information.

Alex Soros, son of billionaire George Soros, has welcomed the news that US President Joe Biden has reportedly granted Ukraine permission to use American-made long-range weapons to strike deep into Russian territory.

 

Several news outlets, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal, reported on Sunday that Washington has authorized Ukrainian forces to use US-made ATACMS missiles to hit targets within Russia’s internationally recognized borders.

Lebanese news website al-Modon revealed details on Saturday from the draft for a ceasefire deal between Israel and Lebanon.

 

The proposal includes a full Israeli withdrawal from the occupied areas, the deployment of 5,000 Lebanese troops in southern Lebanon, and granting exclusive military authority in the area to the Lebanese Armed Forces(LAF).

 

The agreement also states that the LAF will be assisted in controlling the border crossings and preventing weapons smuggling.

 

The draft also includes the reactivation of UNIFIL and scans in the area by the LAF to ensure that there are no unauthorized arms in the south of the country.

 

After a two-month truce, the tripartite committee (Lebanon, Israel, and UNIFL) will reconvene to discuss the marking of the land border and 13 other points of conflict.

 

Lebanese Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri said he believes the chances of reaching a deal are higher than 50%: "The atmosphere is positive and work is in full swing."
