The 1918–1919 pandemic of H1N1 virus influenza was the greatest acute plague of the 20th century. Incurring over 20 million human fatalities, however, was not a good strategy for sustaining the evolutionary fitness of the virus, because it is no longer extant; whereas, say, measles and chickenpox remain with us with no evidence of remarkable genetic change, although this may become more evident if they were to face total or near eradication through vaccination programs. The folly of flu virulence remains our chagrin, because the threat always looms over us that this family of viruses, endemic in birds, again may generate human-lethal gene reassortments. We had valid scares about that contingency with the appearance of H5N1 variant flu in Hong Kong just 3 years ago. Influenza can be regarded as a zoonosis prevalent in birds, many of them world travelers, with occasional outbreaks in humans and other animals mainly rooted in nature's own experiments in genetic engineering. Special importance is attached to reassortments between bird- and human-adapted strains most likely to occur in habitats with close contact between birds, e.g., ducks, humans, and swine (as a mixing reservoir; ref. 1). For these reasons, high urgency attaches to efforts to resurrect genetic information about the singularities of H1N1–1918. The intact virus is nowhere to be found, but genomic fragments can still be detected sensitively and diagnosed. Exemplifying the latest technical advances in the use of DNA amplification, reverse-transcriptase–PCR (RT-PCR), Jeffery Taubenberger and his associates at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology initiated the tour de force of recovering sequences of flu from paraffin-embedded pathological specimens preserved since 1918 in the AFIP collections (2). These sources then were augmented by samples from frozen remains of an Inuit woman who succumbed to the flu in 1918 and was buried in permafrost at Brevig Mission on the Seward Peninsula of Alaska's western coast, not far from the Bering Strait. This nameless woman has left an indelible mark on world medical history (3). Now, as reported in this issue, the AFIP team has joined forces with teams from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Peter Palese/Adolfo García-Sastre groups at Mt. Sinai Medical School in a further quest for the RNA sequences of H1N1–1918 that might account for its historic human virulence (4).

Previous work has focused on two well studied gene products: hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA), which dominate the surface specificities of the virus and underlie most of its taxonomy (e.g., H1N1 refers to type 1 hemagglutinin, type 1 neuraminidase). These gene products are also the chief determinants of specificity in vaccine prophylaxis for flu strains circulating at any given time. HA variation can account for fluctuations of virulence and host specificity of extant flu viruses. However, nothing remarkable was seen in the HA or the NA of H1N1–1918.

As part of routine wastewater surveillance in Maricopa County, Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) is reporting the detection of an influenza subtype associated with avian flu in local wastewater. No human cases of avian flu have been detected in Maricopa County, and the risk to the general population remains low.

Wastewater monitoring is a tool used to detect genetic material from microbes, like influenza A and its subtypes, in untreated wastewater, helping inform public health and partners on changing disease activity. The influenza A(H5) subtype, which can include H5N1 that is associated with avian influenza (also known as bird flu), was detected by all three cities within Maricopa County that conduct wastewater monitoring—Phoenix, Surprise, and Tempe—but it is not currently possible to confirm a precise source location of the viral detection.

Avian influenza has been detected in Arizona, including a commercial poultry farm in Pinal County, and a backyard flock and animals at a zoo in Maricopa County. The H5N1 detections in Pinal and Maricopa counties where further genomic testing was done are the same strain of H5N1 that is occurring in wild birds. Tests with other samples are pending. The same strain-specific testing in wastewater samples is not available so this link cannot be confirmed. There have been no detections of H5N1 in dairy cattle in Arizona.

“Wastewater monitoring is one of multiple tools we have to proactively monitor for avian flu in our community,” said Dr. Nick Staab, assistant medical director at MCDPH. “Given that no human cases have been identified in Maricopa County through our other disease detection methods and there is no recent documented spread of H5N1 influenza from human to human, the overall risk of avian flu to people remains low.”

Avian flu is most often seen in wild and domestic birds; human cases have been rare and primarily in people with close, unprotected contact with sick or dead animals, their bedding, or their droppings. While wastewater monitoring may provide limited details, it provides important information about the presence of the H5 subtype, so that people can take appropriate precautions. This includes avoiding contact with sick or dead birds and wearing appropriate protective gear when handling sick or dead animals, their droppings, or their bedding. It is also advised to avoid consuming unpasteurized (raw) dairy products. Pasteurization kills viruses, including H5 influenza strains, that could come from infected dairy cows.

There is currently an increase in seasonal respiratory viruses, such as COVID-19 and seasonal flu strains, making it more likely that people in the community will come into contact with those viruses than avian flu. “To prevent illness, we want residents and visitors to focus on taking general respiratory virus prevention measures,” said Dr. Staab.

The man, Mike Sun, has allegedly worked with a recently sentenced Chinese agent to advance the Chinese regime’s political interests in Los Angeles. The plane went down in the area of Louden and Savage roads in Bratton Township near Peebles.

The sheriff's office and OSP are still headed to the scene so no word yet on injuries or what may have led up to the crash.

Cramer apologized to Martin's family when asked if he would like to speak before the sentencing, and maintained that he did not intend to kill Martin, despite being on drugs at the time. He previously admitted to using methamphetamine and bath salts on the day of the chase.

Kevin Cramer told reporters that he commends the officers, court and jail, but that he was disappointed his son's mental health was not taken more seriously by the court.

J6 Prosecutor Matthew Graves Resigns Abruptly.

Sources claim Matthew Graves, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, has resigned. Graves, who Joe Biden appointed in November 2021, is responsible for prosecuting hundreds of January 6 Capitol riot defendants.

Graves had refused to pause prosecutions against January 6 defendants ahead of President-elect Donald J. Trump’s inauguration on January 20. He also bragged about the scale of the Biden-Harris Department of Justice’s (DOJ) legal actions against the protesters in May, declaring,“More than 1,424 individuals have been charged in nearly all 50 statesfor crimes related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol.”

The federal prosecutor also indicated that investigations into the Capitol incident were ongoing, with plans to possibly increasethe number of defendantsto over 2,000before the statute of limitations runs out.

Graves is known for his aggressive approach, targeting not only those who entered the Capitol but also individuals who were merely in the vicinity on January 6. He threatened that “thousands” of protestors who remained outside the Capitol were liable for prosecution and that whether or not they would be charged was a matter of “prosecutorial discretion.

”However, the Supreme Court has ruled that prosecutors overstepped their authority in their zeal to convict January 6 protestors.For instance, charges of obstructing an official proceeding—intended to target white-collar criminals such as those who destroyed documents to thwart investigations into the Enron scandal—were used against many January 6 defendants because their protest delayed the certification of the 2020 election. Justices ruled this abused the relevant statute and threw the charges out.

Graves’s resignation may mark a significant turning point in the legal aftermath of the January 6 Capitol breach. President-elect Donald J. Trump has indicated he intends to pardon many protestors once he takes office.

Jack Smith drops appeal of classified docs case against Trump's co-defendants

Special counsel Jack Smith on Monday withdrew his appeals request for his Florida classified documents case against President-elect Donald Trump's co-defendants.

The attorney dropped his appeal against Trump last month after Trump won reelection to the White House, citing a Justice Department policy not to prosecute sitting presidents. Trump will be sworn in next month.

Smith previously accused Trump in 2022 of improperly taking classified documents from the White House to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. But the case was dismissed by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon in July, who cited the constitutionality of Smith's appointment as special counsel.

Trump and the co-defendants, longtime Trump aide Walt Nauta and Mar-a-Lago employee Carlos De Oliveira, all pleaded not guilty to the charges. The new order withdraws Smith's appeal in the prosecution of the two co-defendants, per ABC News.

Smith also passed the appeal to federal prosecutors in Florida, including U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Markenzy Lapointe. It is not clear whether the prosecutors intend to continue the appeal.

Smith is expected to step down from his post ahead of Trump's inauguration next month.
