Drug cartels have become Mexico’s 5th-largest employer

 

Some 175,000 people now actively work for Mexico’s smuggling cartels, according to a shocking new estimate that would make them the country’s fifth-largest private employer.

The cartels’ secret is their viciously efficient ability to recruit, said Rafael Prieto-Curiel, who led the researchers and who said the cartels are the country’s top recruiter at more than 350 new people each week.

“Cartels, they need to have roughly 175,000 members. They cannot be much smaller because they would have collapsed. They cannot be much bigger because they would have grown so fast,” Mr. Prieto-Curiel said. “So they have to be roughly 175,000 members, which means roughly, just to put it into context, the fifth-largest employer in the country.”

He and his fellow researchers used computer models to peer into the country’s notoriously secretive cartels, running millions of permutations on the 150 different cartels, evaluating their recruiting and losses to arrests, killings and dropouts.

He called recruiting the “secret of the success of a cartel.”

Mr. Prieto-Curiel delivered his findings at the Falling Walls Science Summit 2024 in Berlin in November. A video of his talk was posted to YouTube on Dec. 19.

 

The calculations come amid a widening war in Mexico between factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, which began in September. It has now claimed more than 500 lives and another 500 have disappeared, according to local news reports.

 

President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to take a heavy hand with the cartels.

That includes designating the cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, and potentially tasking the U.S. military to conduct some counter-cartel operations.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has bristled at those ideas, calling them “interference” in her nation’s affairs.

“We collaborate, we coordinate, we work together, but we will never subordinate ourselves,” she said.

The cartels have their hand in drug manufacturing and smuggling, money laundering, sex trafficking, human smuggling and other assorted mayhem. During the Biden border surge, experts said their income from moving people across the border topped even their income from drugs.

 

U.S. officials also blame them for the epidemic of fentanyl deaths, saying the cartels have taken over the production and smuggling business after Chinese syndicates were pushed out of business in the last decade.

Finding a way to cut cartel recruitment in half would show real progress, reducing murders by a quarter compared to now. And an unthinkable end to all recruitment would cut murders by more than half, bringing the rate below the 2012 figure.

“Still, in this scenario, Mexico would be more violent in five years than any country in Europe,” said Mr. Prieto-Curiel, who used to work for the police in Mexico City.

 

He said poverty and inequality in Mexico fuel cartel recruitment, but he said media aggrandizement of cartels also matters. He pointed in particular to a Netflix drama, “Narcos,” which Mr. Prieto-Curiel said portrays a cartel figure as a “hero.”

NEW ORLEANS – Former Princeton football player Tiger Bech, an All-Ivy League kick returner, was among those killed in the deadly pickup truck attack early Wednesday in New Orleans.

 

Bech's brother, former TCU receiver Jack Bech, addressed his older brother's death in a post on his X account Wednesday.

Princeton Tigers coach Bob Surace told ESPN on Wednesday that he had been texting with Bech's father, Martin, sharing memories of his former player.

 

"He might be the first Tiger to ever play for us, and that nickname kind of described him as a competitor," Surace said. "He was somebody that somehow, like in the key moments, just excelled and was full of energy, full of life."

 

Bech was a receiver and kick returner at Princeton from 2017 to 2019. During his three-year career at Princeton, Bech caught 53 passes for 825 yards with three touchdowns.

 

Bech was working as a stockbroker in New York and was in New Orleans for the holidays.

 

"He was just starting a successful career in the business world," Surace said. "There were two or three times we had career nights, and you could call him with a day's notice, and he came down and shared his experiences as a young professional with our team."

 

The attack occurred around 3:15 a.m. CT Wednesday in New Orleans' bustling French Quarter district. At least 15 people were killed, and dozens more were injured.

 

The driver of the vehicle was killed in a firefight with police following the attack, the FBI said, adding that it was heading an investigation "with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism."

Trucks in New Orleans Attack and Las Vegas Explosion Were Rented Using the Same App

 

Renters of both vehicles had used Turo, a peer-to-peer app. Officials are investigating possible connections between the two cases.

 

The trucks used in the deadly attack in New Orleans and the explosion at the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday were rented through the same peer-to-peer rental app, Turo, according to the company.

 

The owner of the Ford pickup truck used in New Orleans recognized his vehicle when he saw footage showing the truck and license plate on the news. He had rented the truck to a 42-year-old Army veteran who then used it to ram into crowds on Bourbon Street, killing at least 15 people and injuring dozens more.

 

The truck’s owner, who did not want his name used, said that he had been renting five cars on Turo as a second income stream but that he did not plan to use the platform again after the attack.

 

In Las Vegas, the police said during a news conference that the Tesla Cybertruck that exploded outside the Trump Hotel’s lobby entrance, killing one and injuring at least seven others, was also rented from Turo. Officials called it a “coincidence” and said they were continuing to investigate any possible connections.

 

The company said in a statement that it was “actively partnering with law enforcement authorities as they investigate both incidents.”

 

“We do not believe that either renter involved in the Las Vegas and New Orleans attacks had a criminal background that would have identified them as a security threat,” the statement said. “We remain committed to maintaining the highest standards in risk management.”

 

The app, which began as a venture capital-backed startup in 2009, connects car owners with people looking to rent a car as an alternative to using a traditional rental company. The concept is similar to Airbnb, in that customers can rent a specific car make and model and coordinate pickup and drop-off with the car owner.

 

About 3.5 million people have booked a vehicle through Turo in the past year, according to a company filing. The filing from November said that about 150,000 people have rented out their cars during that period and that there were about 350,000 active vehicle listings in more than 16,000 cities as of September. Some car owners used the service to offset their car payments and costs while others rented out numerous cars as their primary income source.

 

The company had widely been expected to go public this year, and first filed paperwork for an initial public offering in 2022.

 

To book a car on Turo in the United States, you need to create an account with the company; provide a valid driver’s license, home address and payment card; and be at least 18 years old, according to the company’s website. The company also said that additional information could be requested to verify an account or check a customer’s credit history, auto insurance score or criminal background, and that it can decline trips or remove users from the platform at its discretion.

Child falls about 50 feet into missile silo: reports

 

The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office said dispatchers were called around 3:45 p.m. for a report that a youth fell into a silo near a reservoir in Aurora, Colorado, CBS News reported.

 

At the time, three people were exploring the area when the child plummeted 40 to 50 feet into an exhaust vent filled with 4 feet of water, metal and other debris. The youth was injured in the fall, according to the report.

 

Fire rescuers airlifted the child to a hospital where they were in stable condition, according to CBS. An adult and two youths face trespassing charges.

 

This comes after several teens fell into a missile silo in Arapahoe County. In May, several teens needed to be rescued after falling into an abandoned silo, KDVR reported. In that incident, a teen was critically hurt after falling 30 feet and also had to be airlifted.

litergical prayer is useful because people in a distressed state of mind often can't think of what words to say.

also in a formal situation when someone 'off-the-cuff' prays the make theological mistakes so it's best, in a formal situation, to use a written litergical form of praying.

and as far as the Rosary: when one mediates onm the most holy Rosary of the Virgin Mary one also is meditating on the various mysteries of the Rosary.

also you can say it just to pass the time in meditation, as a kind of 'time keeper'.

and when doing that you're thinking about people who you want to have good things happen to, and what those things are, praying for the sick and those lost in sin.

It's not 'expecting something to happen' by repeating mindlessly the same things over and over. The mind is there in prayer. YOu know what you are doing. you do it because it's your time to pray and prayer is often hard to do.

 

if you get to that part of being someone who prays a lot you do get to the part where a contemplative (without words) kind of prayer is very effective: you might be able to enter into the Cloud of the Unknowing at that point.

but if you could and you understood what that is about you wouldn't brag about it.
