Trump bodyguard takes over US Secret Service

Sean Curran was in charge of the US president’s campaign security detail and shielded him from a would-be assassin

US President Donald Trump has named Sean Curran, who led his Secret Service (USSS) bodyguard detail while he was on the campaign trail, to direct the agency.

Curran rushed to shield Trump when he narrowly survived an assassination attempt during his 2024 reelection campaign. A member of the audience in Butler Pennsylvania was killed and two others were wounded as a result of the attack before the gunman was neutralized.

In a post on Wednesday on his Truth Social media platform, Trump said that Curran “is a Great Patriot, who has protected my family over the past few years, and that is why I trust him to lead the Brave Men and Women of the United States Secret Service.”

The US president noted that the secret serviceman “proved his fearless courage when he risked his own life to help save mine from an assassin’s bullet in Butler, Pennsylvania.”

Trump’s appointment of Curran comes despite two bipartisan commissions’ recommendations earlier this year that the next president pick someone outside the agency to serve as director, according to a CBS News report.

Unlike other cabinet positions or the FBI director, an appointment to lead the USSS does not require a Senate confirmation vote.

Curran, who started his career in 2001, has served as the special agent in charge of Trump’s security detail for four years, supervising over 80 personnel.

He has never worked at the USSS headquarters in Washington and arguably lacks managerial experience for the top-ranking position, but has a strong reputation as an agent, according to a New York Times report which cited people who have worked with Curran.

A secret serviceman who worked for years with Curran, described him as a trusted and detail-oriented agent with an intimate understanding of the agency and a sharp sense of humor.

“Trump obviously trusts him,” another former special agent has claimed.

Curran will replace Ron Rowe, who had filled the role of acting director since July, when USSS Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned due to intense scrutiny of the agency’s security lapses in the aftermath of the assassination attempt. The gunman had managed to get within 150 meters of Trump and fired several shots before being killed.

Multiple inquiries reportedly found that during the Butler rally, the USSS did not place a single person in charge of coordinating security, while many of the agents were complacent when giving instructions to local law enforcement to help secure the event. Several secret servicemen were later placed on restricted duty.

The Centennial Light is an incandescent light bulb recognized as the oldest known continuously operating light bulb. It was first illuminated in 1901, and has only been turned off a few brief times since. It is located at 4550 East Avenue, Livermore, California, and is open to public viewing.[1] Due to its longevity, the bulb has been noted by The Guinness Book of World Records,[2] Ripley's Believe It or Not!, and General Electric.[3] The light has been the subject of many TV shows and news reports along with at least four books, and has its own website.

The handmade lightbulb was originally manufactured by the Shelby Electric Company of Shelby, Ohio, towards the end of the 1890s and donated to the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department in 1901. It has been relocated several times since and remains in the care of the fire department to this day. The bulb's longevity has been attributed to the high quality of its manufacture,[4] it being seldom turned off,[5][6] and its low wattage.[5][6] Originally a 60-watt bulb, the light has for many years emitted dim light equivalent to a 4-watt bulb, about the strength of a nightlight.[4]

The Centennial Light was originally a 60-watt bulb, but has since dimmed significantly and is now as bright as a 4-watt bulb.[7][8][9] The hand-blown, carbon-filament common light bulb was invented by Adolphe Chaillet, a French engineer who filed a patent for this socket technology.[10] It was manufactured in Shelby, Ohio, by the Shelby Electric Company in the late 1890s;[7] many just like it still exist and can be found functioning.[11] According to Zylpha Bernal Beck, the bulb was donated to the Fire Department by her father, Dennis Bernal, in 1901.[7] Bernal owned the Livermore Power and Water Company and donated the bulb to the fire station when he sold the company. That story has been supported by firefighter volunteers of that era.[12]

Evidence suggests that the bulb has hung in at least four locations. It was originally hung in 1901 in a hose cart house on L Street,[12] then moved to a garage in downtown Livermore used by the fire and police departments.[13] The bulb was saved during the fire station's 1937 renovation, during which it was off for approximately one week.[7]

Its unusual longevity was first noticed in 1972 by reporter Mike Dunstan. An electrician was on hand to install the bulb into the new fire station's emergency generator. Ripley's Believe It Or Not stated that the short delay would not mar the bulb's continuous burning record. Since that move, the bulb has run continuously on an uninterruptible power supply; previously it had only been off the grid for short periods of time (e.g. a week in 1937 for a renovation and the odd power outage).[7] In 2001, the bulb's 100th birthday was celebrated with a community barbecue and live music.[7]

On the evening of May 20, 2013, the general public witnessed, through a dedicated webcam, that the bulb had apparently burned out. The next morning, an electrician was called in to confirm its status. It was determined that the bulb had not burned out when the dedicated power supply was bypassed, using an extension cord. The power supply was found to have been faulty. Approximately 9 hours and 45 minutes had passed before the light was reestablished.[15]

The bulb is cared for by the Centennial Light Bulb Committee, a partnership of the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department, Livermore Heritage Guild, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, and Sandia National Laboratories. The Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department plans to house and maintain the bulb for the rest of its life, regardless of length. When it does go out, they have no plans for it, although Ripley's Believe it or Not! has requested it for their collection of objects.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s pro-independence government have ruled out the sale of the self-governing island to the US. Trump originally proposed the purchase of Greenland during his first term in office. In 2019, he cancelled his trip to Denmark after Frederiksen had rejected the idea.

The continuing investigation into Wednesday morning’s murder-suicide inside Antioch High School’s cafeteria shows that 17-year-old gunman Solomon Henderson fired a total of ten shots from a nine-millimeter pistol within 17 seconds after he entered the cafeteria. Henderson’s gun was loaded with nine rounds when it was recovered by police. A pistol magazine loaded with seven rounds was recovered from the cafeteria floor.

No firearms or firearm parts were found during a Wednesday afternoon/evening search of Henderson’s Carefree Lane residence.

Detectives have now confirmed that Henderson was brought to school on Wednesday by his mother, not by bus as was believed on Wednesday. The investigation shows that just prior to entering the cafeteria, Henderson went into a nearby restroom where he posted photos to social media.

In the aftermath of the shooting, detectives have found two documents believed to have been created by Henderson on non-traditional websites, one 51 pages in length, the other 288 pages. That material, along with evidence recovered from the residence Wednesday, is under close scrutiny by Homicide Unit detectives, detectives from the Specialized Investigations Division, and the FBI. It is clear that Henderson was significantly influenced by web-based material, especially that found on non-traditional sites that most would find harmful and objectionable. The FBI is working closely with the MNPD in the ideological influences portion of this investigation.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms (ATF) is working closely with the police department to determine the origin of the gun Henderson used and how it came into his possession. At this point, it is known that the pistol was purchased by an individual in Arizona in 2022. It had not been reported stolen. Efforts continue here and out of state to further this aspect of the overall investigation.

Chief Drake extends the police department’s deep condolences to Antioch High students, parents and staff. MNPD officers and counselors are working to be a part of the healing process. Persons impacted by Wednesday’s tragedy who need counseling assistance, in English or in Spanish, can contact the department’s Family Intervention Program at 615-862-7773. The department continues to be in regular discussion with the school system concerning campus and classroom safety, particularly at Antioch High when classes resume next week.

As a reminder, the Security Threat component of the MNPD takes on-line, written and verbal threats against schools and institutions very seriously and works to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible. Three persons have been arrested today in unrelated threat cases. Those will be detailed in a subsequent media release.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has again lashed out at US billionaire Elon Musk, stating that freedom of speech should not be used for promotion of extreme-right views. Judge John C. Coughenour was raised in the Midwest and earned his law degree from the University of Iowa in 1966. After a brief stint on the law faculty at the University of Washington, he was a litigation partner at the Seattle firm of Bogle & Gates, before being nominated by President Reagan for the federal bench in 1981.

Judge Coughenour served as Chief Judge of the District from 1998 to 2004. During his time on the bench, he has presided over numerous high-profile trials and delivered several controversial decisions. His notable cases include a bank fraud trial involving the Montana Freemen, an anti-government group that had a three-month standoff with the FBI in 1996; the case of Michael Forwell, the British national sentenced to 15 years in 1996 for attempting to smuggle 72 tons of marijuana into Washington; and the case of Ahmed Ressam, the so-called “Millennium Bomber” who was convicted of attempting to blow up Los Angeles International Airport on January 1, 2000. In 2006, Judge Coughenour assumed senior status, though he continues to maintain a full case load in that capacity.

In addition to his work on the court, Judge Coughenour taught trial advocacy at the University of Washington School of Law for over forty years. His former law clerks created an endowment in his name to provide continued support for the school’s trial advocacy program. He also regularly travels internationally to participate in judicial reform activities with judges and lawyers, and hosts delegations in Seattle regarding the same.

Judge Coughenour served as Chair of the Ninth Circuit working groups on Jury Instructions and Gender Bias, and he is past President of the Ninth Circuit District Judges’ Association.

The law also has the same stipulations allowing free access to places of worship — but conservatives say Democratic administrations have been more interested in prosecuting abortion clinic obstruction.

Trump issued the pardons one day before the annual March for Life in Washington, DC, which he will address via video feed.

The Republican had vowed on the campaign trail to issue the pardons if he got to the White House.
