Senate Approves GOP Budget Blueprint Without Trump Tax Cuts

The Senate passed a Republican budget bill promoting President Donald Trump's immigration, energy, and defense policies in the early hours of Friday, despite Trump's preference for a House of Representatives version of the bill that would include trillions of dollars in tax cuts.

 

The Senate's narrower resolution, which marks Republicans' most sweeping legislative win since Trump took office, orders Congress to spend more money on defense and Trump's hardline immigration and border security policies, while also encouraging more development of fossil fuels.

 

The vote tally was 52-48. All Republicans supported it except Senator Rand Paul, who had introduced an unsuccessful amendment to require spending cuts.

 

Trump this week came down firmly in favor of House Republicans' plan for a single sweeping bill, which includes extending $4.5 trillion in tax cuts. House Republicans have a narrow and fractious 218-215 majority, which will make passing that bill difficult.

 

The Senate's bill, which leaves the issue of Trump's desired extension of his 2017 tax cuts to a later date, will serve as a backup in case House Republicans cannot come to an agreement on how to pay for the tax cuts in their bill without slashing funding for popular safety net programs like Medicaid and Social Security or adding significantly to the country's $36 trillion debt.

 

"I hope we can get one big, beautiful bill in the House, but we need to act on border security and national security now. We're running out of time," Senate Budget Chair Lindsey Graham said after debate on amendments had concluded around 4:30 AM (0930 GMT).

 

Trump has said he does not want to touch the safety net programs while also pushing for tax cuts, presenting competing desires that congressional Republicans are struggling to translate into budget reality.

 

The Senate measure, a $340 billion fiscal 2025 budget resolution, boosts spending by $85 billion a year for four years to fund tighter border security, Trump's deportation of immigrants in the country illegally, energy deregulation and an increase in military spending.

 

The House budget resolution includes those same priorities along with $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, while seeking to cover the cost through $2 trillion in spending cuts and accelerated economic growth based mainly on the tax and energy policy changes it would usher in.

 

Both chambers of Congress need to pass the same budget resolution to unlock the parliamentary tool that would enable Republicans to enact Trump's legislative agenda in a way that circumvents Democrat opposition and the Senate filibuster.

 

Republican leaders in the House hope to advance their version of a budget outline next week.

 

Only two amendments to the bill were adopted, both introduced by Republicans. Their sponsors said they were aimed at reducing excessive regulatory burdens and federal spending, and safeguarding Medicaid and Medicare.

 

"I know my Democratic colleagues are going to try tonight to use scare tactics to message that Republicans don't support these vital programs, but we do," Republican Senator Dan Sullivan said upon introducing his amendment.

 

Democrat Senator Ron Wyden spoke in opposition to Sullivan's amendment, saying it would do "nothing to stop Republicans from cutting these essential healthcare programs."

 

Senate Democrats, who are in the minority and had little chance of stopping the budget plan's passage, opposed it in an all night "vote-a-rama" session by filing unsuccessful amendment after amendment and giving floor speeches accusing Republicans of selling out American families to ultimately give tax breaks to the wealthy.

 

Among the dozens of proposed and blocked Democrat-sponsored amendments were ones aiming to prohibit tax cuts for those earning over $1 billion annually, to prevent reductions in funding and staffing necessary to respond to the bird flu epidemic, and to keep seniors from losing healthcare benefits due to potential Medicaid cuts.

Joel Finkelstein, Chief Science Officer and Co-founder at Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI), an organization thatidentifies cyber threats andtrains university students, many of whom go on to work for the FBI and CIA, and Adam Sohn, Chief Executive Officer at NCRIdiscussed ways of battling antisemitism in a two-man panel at the Arutz Sheva - INN Jerusalem Conference in New York on Sunday.

 

Joel pointed out that antisemitism permeated Biblical Egypt, where the Egyptians were afraid that, "Hebrew immigrants would replace the native population." "Our research shows a grotesque mischaracterization of this story," he pointed out.

 

He then went on to discuss modern-day antisemitism on both the conservative and liberal ends of the political spectrum, and how Jews, themselves, play a central role in strengthening the feelings of enmity toward themselves.

 

"On the far right, you have people saying that elite networks of Jews are taking in immigrants to replace ethnic nations. They're trying to replace white people in the West with people of color. On the left, they're saying that Jews are colonial oppressors who are replacing dark-skinned people in their homeland."

 

"Those are one and the same and it turns out that both are strongly indicative of where and when acts of antisemitism are going to take place in the real world," he continued. "You can use the heat on social media to predict where these acts are going to happen."

 

"People believe that white supremacy is the real problem. Our data suggests that when people talk about Apartheid, you can predict attacks against Jews. [These individuals] are turning global wars in Israel into global wars on Jews and when it comes to Jewish unity, Jews are using those myths against one another. That's has got to stop," he urged.

 

Sohn, meantime, called on lawmakers from both sides of the political isle to take a stand against Jew hatred. "We're releasing major research in two to three weeks that points out how lawmakers pick on their favorite brand of antisemitism depending on which side they agree with," he said. "The antisemitism [on both sides of the political spectrum] is reaching a point where it has a common denominator and that's when it becomes dangerous to the Jewish community."

Here’s how Twitter and Elon Musk can prevent racist ‘raids’ on the social network

A new study fromthe nonprofit Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI)said Twitter should have expected the huge spike in hate speech that occurred as Tesla CEO Elon Musk took over.

NCRI used anomaly detection technology to identify a surge in mentions of a racist slur, in tandem with mentions of Twitter,on 4Chan the day before Musk took over at Twitter, signaling that a raid was imminent.

Twitter’s response to the deluge of hate speech last week was stronger than its response to a similar event in April this year, NCRI found. In the recent raid nearly half of the accounts posting hate speech were suspended, in the previous raid only 10% of those posting hate speech were suspended.

According to NCRI’s CEOAdam Sohn, a raid is when bad actors online engage in coordinated activity to try to disrupt social media platforms, usually to harm marginalized people or specific targets.

 

GamerGate is probably the most infamous raid and took place around 2014 when4Chan trollswho were a part of the video game community lobbed misogynistic attacks against women who were in the industry. They specifically targeted one woman and critic who had spoken out about sexist tropes in games. Their campaign was waged across myriad social platforms including Twitter and Reddit, and manifested in real-world rape and death threats, and a bomb scare targeting the critic.

 

Conspiracy-driven communities online are also known to use raid tactics.

 

Some people engage in so-called “inauthentic” activity on social networks just to see if they can get away with it (“for the lulz”).

 

NCRI analyst AlexGoldenbergsays that while Twitter’s action in response to the hate speech last week was effective, the company could have forecast and prevented it, too.

Over the weekend, Facebook owner Meta announced“Project Waterworth,”an ambitious plan to build out a globe-spanning, 31,000-mile subsea internet cable. That’s longer from end to end than the circumference of the Earth. When completed, the massive cable is expected to connect the US, Brazil, South Africa, India, and other regions along the route. The project represents the latest push by Big Tech companies to control a greater share of subsea cable infrastructure. That general shift in who maintains the internet’s “pipes” could shift even further with the heightened data demands introduced by competition over advanced AI.

 

Though Meta did not provide specific details about the exact locations of its routes, a graphic shows a winding trail that begins on the US East Coast, moves down to South America, and travels across the lower Atlantic Ocean before making its way back up to India. The final stretch of the cable crosses all the way along the Pacific Ocean back to a port on the US West Coast. It’s still unclear exactly how much Project Waterworth will cost (Meta simply said it’s expecting a “multi-billion-dollar” investment). Previous rumors reported by TechCrunch in November, however, claimed Meta was prepared to spend $10 billion on a globe-spanning undersea cable project that seems to match Waterworth’s description. A Meta spokesperson told Popular Science they anticipate the project could finish construction “toward the end of this decade.”

 

Meta-building infrastructure capable of supporting AI data demands

This isn’t Meta’s first foray into subsea connectivity.The company has reportedly had a hand in at least 20 different cable projects over the past decade.These new cables, however, are being built specifically with artificial intelligence in mind. Project Waterworth will utilize a 24-fiber-pair system that Meta claims will be particularly useful for more data-intensive AI projects. For comparison, many smaller subsea cables will typically only have 8 to 16 fiber pairs.

 

There are possible political complications to consider as well. In 2020, Meta (then called Facebook) and Google were forced to abandon plans to build out an undersea cableconnecting the US to Hong Kong after US security agencies warned it could possibly become a target of Chinese government spying.

Celebrities Have a Leading Role to Play in Countering the Rising Tide of Antisemitism

 

Why Hollywood must quell antisemitic tropes and language

By now, it should be no secret that antisemitism is surging in the United States.

 

According to the Anti-Defamation League’s 2023 Antisemitic Attitudes in America report, 20% of Americans believe in six or more antisemitic tropes — significantly more than the 11% documented in 2019. The ADL’s Audit of Antisemitic Incidents in 2022 stated that antisemitic incidents rose by 36% that year, and hate crimes against Jews increased by more than 37% last year. It’s no shock that synagogues in the U.S. are routinely protected by armed guards.

 

In fact, this is hardly a new phenomenon. On an annual basis, more than half of all religious bias crimes target Jews, despite the fact that Jews comprise a mere 2.4% of the total U.S. population.

 

Yet the cultural power of artists and entertainers, when honed strategically, can prevent prejudice and hatred from taking root. Celebrities have the power to wield their influence for the greater good.

 

Jewish actor Emmanuelle Chriqui — known for her TV roles on “Entourage,” “The Mentalist” and “Superman & Lois,” and comedy films “Snow Day” and “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” — embraces this sense of responsibility that is associated with celebrity status.

 

“I think we are shifting from being less secretive to prouder about our Jewish identity,” she says. “As antisemitism rises, so does the need to be more vocal about who we are and where we come from. For thousands of years, people have tried to exterminate us but we are still here. In being proud and true to who we are, we are able to honor those who came before us and who fought for our freedoms.”

 

Chriqui adds, “Collectively we are truly seeing that when one Jewish person suffers all Jewish people suffer. I feel like most of us have been cut off from that feeling, and with what we are witnessing now with antisemitism. We are standing in solidarity more than ever. It is imperative, at this time, to inspire pride and stay vocal.”

 

One organization dedicated to inclusion for people with disabilities has demonstrated just how powerful celebrity can be as a form of influence. For years, the Ruderman Family Foundation has been working to ensure that people in the entertainment industry understand the enormous responsibility that comes with that outsized influence.

 

“I would posit that entertainers have a bigger impact on our society than even elected officials,” says Jay Ruderman, the foundation’s president. “You’re talking about individuals who are followed by millions of people who cling to their every word.”

 

The foundation has advocated for disability and mental health rights since the early 2000s, and then got involved in Hollywood “by accident,” Ruderman says. While many movements and initiatives were beginning to change the industry for Black and LGBTQ performers, Ruderman noticed a “dearth of people with disabilities representing themselves in entertainment.”

 

Over the past decade, the foundation spearheaded an effort to change the landscape in Hollywood for people with disabilities, making the industry more inclusive and ensuring that the issue is part of the diversity conversation.

 

As part of this mission, the foundation has had several major Hollywood studios sign its pledge to audition actors with disabilities in every new studio production. Ruderman notes that the 2022 film “CODA,” which featured deaf actors playing deaf characters in lead roles and won various awards, brought a moment of visibility in the entertainment world for deaf actors.

 

Chriqui, meanwhile, asserts that Hollywood’s commitment to diversity and inclusion should extend to the portrayal of Jews on screen.

 

“I think what the entertainment industry can get right about Jewish people on the screen is that there is a great opportunity to cast roles in a way that reflects the true diversity of the Jewish people,” she says. “There is a misconception among many that Jews look one way, when in fact we are an extremely diverse group that includes Jews from Ethiopia and all over Africa, China, India, the Middle East, North Africa, Spain, Italy, Portugal and more. The entertainment industry would bring awareness to Jewish diversity and reveal important untold stories from underrepresented Jewish voices.”

 

Now, the Ruderman Family Foundation is hoping that the entertainment industry can also utilize its power for good and work to tackle the dramatic rise of antisemitism.

Ruderman attributes this surge of antisemitism to several factors, including “the rise of populism, social media and the fact that certain world leaders are giving a wink and a nod to antisemitism,” adding, “I’m seeing people that normally would be embarrassed about such opinions voice them more openly.”

 

He points to the case of a prominent rapper who in October 2022 shared extreme antisemitic tropes on social media, threatened violence against Jews and whose bigoted rhetoric brought danger of emboldening others. Antisemitic tropes have existed forever, Ruderman says. “But when you hear them repeated by someone who has millions of followers, then people with power need to speak out against it.” In 2022, Ruderman was heartened when many in the entertainment industry responded immediately, standing together to denounce the rapper’s derogatory comments.

 

Antisemitic and anti-Zionist social media discourse has an outsized impact on real-world events, according to a study initiated by the Ruderman Family Foundation and conducted in July 2023 by the Network Contagion Research Institute. Along with the research, which analyzed 100 million social posts over a two-year period,NCRI’s CEO Adam Sohn said, “In the present as well as in previous analyses we’ve done, we found correlation with real-world antisemitic incidents.”

 

The study also demonstrated how anti-Israel sentiment frequently crosses the line into antisemitism. “With Israel currently at war following the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attack, the connection between the two types of tropes, as well as their impact on public perception and discourse, is particularly concerning,” Ruderman says.

 

“The Israeli-Palestinian conflict typically activates passions overseas and particularly in the United States, giving rise to increased antisemitism and demonstrating Jew-hatred’s inextricable link with anti-Zionism,” he says. “We witnessed this pattern unfold during the 11-day outbreak of violence in the region in May 2021, which was accompanied by a surge in both physical incidents of antisemitism and antisemitic rhetoric online in America and worldwide. In the more recent aftermath of the unprecedented Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel — the worst massacre against the Israeli people in 50 years, and in fact, and what many are quantifying as the deadliest day in Jewish history since the Holocaust — entertainment industry influencers have the opportunity to utilize their platforms to spread factual information and counter toxic discourse in a powerful way.”

 

Ruderman says the foundation’s latest initiative aims to “talk to the entertainment industry and say, ‘You have an outsized influence. You can have a positive influence on the reduction of antisemitism, or you can have a negative influence of antisemitism.’”

 

The foundation’s advocacy builds on its ongoing work to strengthen the relationship between Israel and the American Jewish community through ongoing dialogue and mutual learning. “Basically 80% of the world’s Jewish population is split between Israel and the U.S.,” Ruderman says, noting, “These communities are extremely different from each other.”

 

For more than two decades, the foundation has undertaken multifaceted efforts to solidify Israel’s relationship with American Jewry. “We speak to Israelis about American Jews and the differences between the cultures, and right now, the biggest issue for American Jews is the rise of antisemitism,” says Ruderman, who adds that the foundation is planning to fund documentaries that address antisemitism in an impactful way.

 

Advocacy will also take the shape of white papers, surveys, reports, guides and videos. “We’ve always been an organization that has focused on research,” Ruderman proudly says of the foundation. “We’re not just advocating, but we’re putting out position papers that back up what we’re saying. We’ve tried to make our case through not just being critical, but also providing data to the industry and then working with the industry to change their policy

Blue State Blues: Palestinians Make a Case for Their Own Removal from Gaza

 

The grotesque ceremony Thursday in which Hamas terrorists paraded the coffins of four dead Israeli civilian hostages — one of which had the wrong corpse — before a jeering crowd was the best argument for President Donald Trump’s plan to move Palestinians out of Gaza.

 

There is already legal precedent for doing so. Millions of ethnic Germans were expelled from Poland, Czechoslovakia, and other countries that the Nazis had invaded during the Second World War, to prevent a subsequent provocation.

 

Trump made his suggestion last month — before proposing the idea that the U.S. should take possession of Gaza — based on the fact that Palestinians, led by Hamas terrorists, have launched so many wars from Gaza, for so long.

 

But aside from the wars, there is the sheer inhumanity of the Palestinians’ behavior in Gaza toward Israelis and Jews — no, not every single Gazan, but enough of the population to prompt alarm about a culture of hatred and death.

 

Recall that Palestinian civilians — not just terrorists — participated in the murder, rape, and looting on October 7, 2023 once Hamas and Islamic Jihad had launched their original attack. Civilians also took and held Israeli hostages.

 

One former hostage said after her release in the November 2023 truce that she had been abducted by civilians and then sold, like a slave, to Hamas. Others told similar stories about being sold, and forced to work for civilians in Gaza.

 

A few occasionally experienced acts of kindness, usually from Palestinian women. One recently freed hostage, who was held by an Islamic Jihad commander with several wives, said that one wife took pity on her and did her chores.

 

Mia Schem, one of the first hostages to be released in November 2023, spoke about how she endured an operation without anesthetic and lived in constant fear of being raped by the abusive father of the civilian family that held her.

 

“There are no innocent citizens there. They’re families controlled by Hamas,” she told the Israeli media. “They’re children who from the moment they are born, they teach them that Israel is Palestine and just to hate Jews.”

 

There are, of course civilians in Gaza, and people who are non-combatants. They are protected under international law — not from all the risks of war, but from being intentionally targeted (i.e. the way Hamas targets Israeli civilians).

 

There are also people who — quietly, and not so quietly — oppose Hamas rule. But few of them dare to speak out — not when Hamas has the guns, and regularly beats, tortures, and executes anyone who opposes their total domination.

 

On Thursday, Hamas brought a crowd of Palestinian civilians — including children — to witness the handover of the coffins to the Red Cross, which has shamefully allowed itself to be used, repeatedly, in macabre propaganda displays.

 

The two adult coffins onstage, in front of a depiction of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a vampire with blood pouring down his chin, listed the date of “arrest” as October 7. (In a nod to whatever shreds of decency remain in Gaza, the two child coffins were spared that desecration.) The crowd sang and celebrated, enjoying the grand party.

 

Israelis looked on in horror. One dead hostage had been an 84-year-old man, Oded Lifshitz; the others were a mother, Shiri Bibas, 33, and her two small children, Ariel, 5, and Kfir, 2. Kfir was 9 months old when he was abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz. (Shiri Bibas, it transpired, was not even in the coffin; her fate, or the location of her remains, is still unknown.)

 

What kind of people laud the death of mothers, children, and the elderly? What kind of Nazis?

 

No civilization can live next to people who behave that way. That is why Trump’s Gaza proposal, which would once have been taboo, is suddenly making sense to many people.

 

It is no “genocide” to move such a society far, far away from its intended victims.

Jihadists Behead 70 Christians in DR Congo Church

 

Open Doors UK, a human rights group focused on persecution against Christians, reported on Tuesday that a militant group affiliated with the Islamic State (ISIS) took 70 Christian villages hostage, marched them into their church, and then murdered them by cutting their heads off.

 

Open Doors quoted sources in the field who said the massacre took place on February 13, when a group of terrorists allegedly from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) surrounded the village of Maybe and forced residents from their homes.

 

The ADF allegedly rounded up a total of 70 Christian villages and forced them into a Protestant church in the nearby town of Kasanga. This church, like many in the area, had been abandoned by its congregants because the security situation was so dire.

 

“We don’t know what to do or how to pray. We’ve had enough of massacres. May God’s will alone be done,” said a church elder from CECA-20, the Evangelical Community in Central Africa.

 

The ADF is one of roughly a hundred armed militant groups vying for control of the mineral-rich eastern Congo. The ADF is linked to ISIS, and nominally dedicated to overthrowing the governments of the DRC and Uganda to create a “caliphate” like the one ISIS created in Syria and Iraq.

 

The Ugandan government has sent troops over the border into the DRC to fight the ADF, but those forces have proven distinctly unhelpful at controlling the much more powerful and aggressive M23 rebel group, which recently captured two major Congolese cities.

 

The militants proceeded to murder all 70 of their hostages inside the church, with beheading reportedly their preferred method of execution. According to Open Doors’ sources, families of the deceased were too frightened to bury the dead until a week later and many of the surviving Christians have fled the area.

 

“We don’t know what to do or how to pray. We’ve had enough of massacres. May God’s will alone be done,” said a church elder from CECA-20, the Evangelical Community in Central Africa.

Regional security analysts said the ADF was pushed back into remote areas of the Congo’s North Kivu province by Ugandan troops, and the militants broke into smaller bands as they withdrew – but these gangs are eager to prove they remain a threat, and they like to demonstrate their lethality by attacking isolated villages and perpetrating mass slaughter.

Terrorist Supporters Use Leftist Echo Chamber Reddit to Spread Propaganda Throughout Internet

 

A sprawling online network with ties to U.S.-designated terrorist organizations is systematically spreading propaganda and manipulating public perception across major social media, information, and AI platforms, a Pirate Wires investigation has found. Leftist echo chamber Reddit is the key to the group’s manipulation strategy.

 

In a major exposé, Pirate Wires has uncovered an extensive pro-Palestinian network that uses Reddit to spread propaganda to Discord, X, TikTok, Instagram, Quora, and Wikipedia. This network, which has ties to US-designated terrorist groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, is engaged in a coordinated effort to manipulate public opinion and censor ideological opponents while evading platform moderation and legal consequences.

 

At the heart of this network is a 270,000-member subreddit called r/Palestine, which functions as the central hub for the group’s activities. The network consists of over 110 subreddits controlled by around 30 core moderators who leverage their positions to shape narratives, suppress content, and funnel users to increasingly extreme subreddits. Notably, the network has infiltrated and taken control of several popular non-political subreddits with millions of members, such as r/Documentaries (20 million members), r/therewasanattempt (7.2 million), and r/PublicFreakout (4.7 million), allowing them to reach a vast unsuspecting audience.

 

The network’s influence extends beyond Reddit, as platforms like Google Search and ChatGPT consider Reddit as a preferred source of information and links. In other cases, key members of the group serve as connectors to activities on X, Discord, and Quora. Through practices like vote brigading, content manipulation, and astroturfing, the network creates an illusion of widespread support for its radical ideologies while sourcing content from propaganda aggregators linked to terrorist organizations.

 

One such aggregator is Resistance News Network (RNN), which translates and distributes content from Telegram channels run by U.S.-designated foreign terror organizations. This allows the network to bypass restrictions on terror-related content and funnel propaganda from these groups onto mainstream platforms, potentially violating U.S. material support laws.

 

Some aspects of the terror supporters’ actions are similar to the wide scale manipulation of reddit by the Kamala Harris campaign, which was caught red-handed as it manipulated the platform:

 

The Harris-Walz campaign reportedly keeps a spreadsheet to track of its astroturfing efforts, which involves staffers spamming the “Politics” subreddit (reddit forums on a particular topic) — and other subreddits — with pro-Harris propaganda, and then having volunteers who pretend to be random users who just so happened to stumble upon the content post favorable comments.

 

The Federalist accessed the campaign’s Discord server and found that every weekday morning paid Democrat staffer Gabrielle Lynn communicates a “Daily Messaging Guidance” for Reddit, which usually consists of articles and data that the Harris-Walz campaign wants to boost, and “key messaging” that campaign volunteers need to stick to.

 

This information is assembled by official Harris-Walz staffers and is added to a Google Spreadsheet titled “Reddit Organizing.” From there, volunteers called “Lead Posters” — who are Reddit savvy — choose what they think will best resonate with users on the platform.

NCRI Exposed: Israel Lobby-Linked Group Tied to Illegal Settlements and Campus Censorship

Even as Israel pounds Gaza into rubble, carrying out what has been described as a genocide in the process, many of its supporters are attempting to change the subject, instead decrying a supposedly new wave of dangerous antisemitism across American universities.

 

Their evidence for this is a new report from the Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI). Entitled“The Corruption of the American Mind,”the study alleges that Middle Eastern funding of U.S. universities has helped unleash a torrent of anti-Jewish hatred. Yet, as we shall see, not only does the report contain numerous methodological issues, butthe NCRI itself is deeply connected to the Israel lobby, as well as the U.S. national security state, and regularly publishes thinly sourced reports in service of Israeli interests and U.S. imperialism.

 

Campus Propaganda Wars

 

The NCRI report claims that American universities have accepted billions of dollars from authoritarian countries and that those institutions that accepted Middle Eastern cash saw 300% more antisemitic incidents than those that did not. U.S. universities, they conclude, are hotbeds of Jew-hatred. The report bemoans a:

 

[M]assive influx of foreign, concealed donations to American institutions of higher learning, much of it from authoritarian regimes with notable support from Middle Eastern sources, reflects or supports heightened levels of intolerance towards Jews, open inquiry and free expression.”

 

The study was widely cited in the media, particularly by pro-Israel partisans eager to change the subject from Israel’s bombing of Gaza. Bari Weiss, for example, wrote that “the explosion of antisemitic hate” on campuses had been “fueled by Middle Eastern money.” As she explained:

 

[F]or several decades a toxic worldview—morally relativist, anti-Israel, and anti-American—has been incubating in ‘area studies’ departments and social theory programs at elite universities. Whole narratives have been constructed to dehumanize Israelis and brand Israel as a ‘white, colonial project’ to be ‘resisted.’”

 

The clear implication in both the NCRI study and Weiss’ report is that domestic opposition to Israeli (or other Western nations’) actions cannot be organic. Instead, it must be funded by nefarious foreign actors – a notion that, as we shall see –is a central recurring theme in the NCRI’s work.

 

Shady Connections

 

The Network Contagion Research Institute describes itself as “the world’s foremost expert in identifying and forecasting the threat and spread of misinformation and disinformation across social media platforms.” Yet its connections to a wide range of controversial organizations raises questions about its neutrality. For one,the primary funder of its $1.7 million budget is the Israel on Campus Coalition, a group that describes its mission as to:

 

[U]nite the many pro-Israel organizations that operate on campuses across the United States by coordinating strategies, providing educational resources, sharing in-depth research, and increasing collaboration.”

 

“We envision the American college campus as a place where…the anti-Israel movement is marginalized, and where the entire campus community appreciates Israel’s contributions to the world,” the Israel on Campus Coalition writes on the “about us” section of its website.

 

If it were not apparent enough that this is a nakedly pro-Israel propaganda group fighting a war on America’s college campuses,the Israel on Campus Coalition is, in turn, bankrolled by the Jewish National Fund,a group that works hand-in-hand with the Israeli Defense Forces and builds illegal Jewish settlements on Palestinian land.

 

The NCRI has also partnered with (i.e.,was financed by) the Charles Koch Foundation and the Open Society Foundation– groups that have been involved in funding regime change operations abroad.

It has also collaborated with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).The ADL is a group in the United States that, under the guise of fighting anti-Jewish racism, has long acted as a semi-official spying agency for Israel. Throughout its long history, it has infiltrated or surveilled virtually every progressive American organization, including Greenpeace, the NAACP, the United Farm Workers, the AFL-CIO, the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP), and a host of leftist Arab- and Jewish-American organizations. It even spied on figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Nelson Mandela and was known to be passing much of the information on to the Israeli government.

 

An internal FBI memo noted that the ADL was very likely breaking the Foreign Agents Registration Act by acting as an arm of the Israeli state. Indeed, the memo alleged that the group was almost certainly secretly funded by Tel Aviv. In 2019, the ADL announced it was partnering with the NCRI to “produce a series of reports that take an in-depth look into how extremism and hate spread on social media – and provide recommendations on how to combat both.”

 

The ties to the ADL go even deeper. NCRI co-founder Joel Finkelstein started the organization while holding down a job as a research fellow at the ADL and continued to work at both organizations simultaneously for nearly two years, further blurring the line between the two.

 

Meanwhile, NCRI lead intelligence analystAlex Goldenberg is a former fellow at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the primary and most influential Israel lobbying group in the United States.Richard Benson,the NCRI’s director of European operations, was formerly chief executive of Community Security Trust (CST), a British Israel lobby group with deep ties to the Israeli state. The CST compiled a secret list of “extreme” (i.e., anti-Zionist) Jewish groups and sent it to the U.K. government and successfully lobbied to block Palestinian activists from being allowed to enter Great Britain.

 

Many key figures of the NCRI’s leadership team alsohave close links to the U.S. national security state. This includes its CEO, Adam Sohn, who served as Florida Governor__ Jeb Bush’s__ communications directorbefore becoming vice president of the Koch Foundation.

 

Paul Goldenberg, meanwhile, wasa senior figure in the Department of Homeland Security and led its attempts to counter extremism and radicalism at home. He was appointed by President Obama and reappointed by President Trumpas a senior advisor to the DHS. Today, he is a strategic advisor to the NCRI.

 

The NCRI’s strategic advisory council also includes two senior military figures: Loree Sutton, a former brigadier general in the U.S. Army, and (formerly) John Allen, a retired four-star Marine Corps general who wascommander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan.

 

Flawed Methodology

 

In short, then, the NCRI has deep connections to both the Israel lobby and the U.S. national security state, making its pronouncements on the issue of Israel’s war on Gaza and the rise of pro-Palestine solidarity particularly questionable. However, the methodology the group used in their report is equally questionable.

 

Firstly, the group derived its numbers on antisemitic incidents by amalgamating hard-to-compare data from multiple organizations, including the ADL. But, as MintPress documented in November, the ADL’s figures on antisemitic incidents are deeply flawed, as the organization counts pro-Palestine rallies calling for ceasefires as instances of anti-Jewish hatred. Virtually any opposition to the state of Israel’s policies is treated as problematic, as the ADL does not only consider anti-Zionism to be antisemitism but, as its CEO Johnathan Greenblatt said: “anti-Zionism is genocide.” “Every Jewish person is a Zionist…it is fundamental to our existence,” Greenblatt brazenly added.

The NCRI report highlights what it sees as the nefarious influence of money from foreign dictatorships but does not consider whether opposition to Israel could be organic and a natural response to the Israeli government. Moreover, while the headlines concentrate on Middle Eastern money, among the top sources for foreign cash in universities are the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, Bermuda and Canada – hardly the destinations many would consider when reading the key findings.

 

In addition, thelead author of the report is a senior research fellow at the Moshe Dayan Centerfor Middle East and African Studies at Tel Aviv University, an institution that grew out of a proposal from the first director of theIsraeli intelligence service, Mossad.

 

Even pro-Israel sources have panned the NCRI report. As the conservative Jewish News Syndicate noted, the study “mix[ed] incompatible data,” “[did] not present a single example of how undocumented money was spent in a way to impact antisemitism,” and concluded that “the impact on campus is ‘complex and multiply determined,’ which is shorthand for ‘we couldn’t prove our case.’”

 

Targeting Alternative Media

 

In another attack on pro-Palestine voices, the Network Contagion Research Institute was also the prime source for a recent Washington Post investigation claiming that conspiracy theories about Hamas’ October 7 attack are gaining momentum online. As the Post wrote:

 

Oct. 7 denial is spreading. A small but growing group denies the basic facts of the attacks, pushing a spectrum of falsehoods and misleading narratives that minimize the violence or dispute its origins.”

 

Yet the article did not attempt to distinguish between wild and untrue assertions and factual reporting from independent media outlets like The Electronic Intifada and The Grayzone, which has shown that much about the Israeli narrative, including the infamous “40 beheaded babies” hoax, was demonstrably untrue. By doing so, the article lumps Electronic Intifada and The Grayzone in with far-right Holocaust deniers. This is particularly egregious since the article’s writer, Elizabeth Dwoskin, is a Nakba denier who claimed that before 1948, there was no Palestine and that the area merely consisted of a few “desert bedouins without a sense of national identity.”

 

Despite the Post’s dubious claims and lack of hard evidence, Electronic Intifada has already been attacked by groups using the article to limit its reach online. Newsguard – a news rating site and browser plug-in – recently contacted Electronic Intifada and appears to be pushing for the site to be de-ranked and demoted in search results, labeling it an untrustworthy news source, thereby limiting its impact online.

 

Newsguard purports to be a private and independent company. But it is, in fact, even more connected to the U.S. national security state than the NCRI. On its board of advisors sits the former Secretary of Homeland Security,Tom Ridge, former Secretary General of NATO, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, and ex-CIA Director, Michael Hayden.MintPress News has documented Newsguard’s ties to the national security state and has also been targeted by the organization.

 

Ali Abuminah, the co-founder and executive director of the Electronic Intifada, spelled out the point of these hit pieces and why groups like the NCRI would collaborate with them. “Articles like this in establishment or semi-official outlets like the Washington Post will be used by lobby groups to pressure social media companies to censor us or limit our reach,” he said, adding:

 

There is a whole censorship-industrial-complex, in which governments, think tanks funded by governments and arms manufacturers and big tech companies aim to control what we all say and see online, under the banner of fighting supposed disinformation. Disinformation About Disinformation

 

The Network Contagion Research Institute claims that it has “no political agenda.” Yet, studying their reports, it becomes clear that they are most interested in investigating the deeds of enemy states. One analysis, for example, published in the wake of October 7 claimed that Iranian state actors were carrying out a disinformation campaign around Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, amplifying antisemitic tropes and slogans.

 

This was far from the only Israel interference the NCRI has run. Another from last year claimed that the vast majority of tweets opposing Zionism were antisemitic, sharing “identical hateful tropes,” and that Israel was accused of human rights abuses online far more than any other country in the world – a claim the researchers felt was unfair.

 

A third contended that Instagram is flooded with pro-Palestine bots. A chief piece of evidence, they claimed, was that messages such as “Free Palestine” were often the top comment underneath posts that had little or nothing to do with the war.

 

The NCRI has also pointed the finger at Washington’s chief political enemies. In a report titled “A Tik-Tok-ing Timebomb: How TikTok’s Global Platform Anomalies Align with the Chinese Communist Party’s Geostrategic Objectives,” they claimed that “TikTok systematically promotes or demotes content based on whether it is aligned with or opposed to the interests of the Chinese Government.” Meanwhile, they have also alleged that Russia was creating a “disinformation ecosystem” to pin the blame for global food insecurity on the West.

 

It is telling that the NCRI consistently echoes the Washington line on these issues and appears far less interested in studying hateful content that Israelis or Americans put out against their enemies nor government-backed disinformation networks emanating from those countries. One would only have to look at official statements put out by both endorsing genocide. Furthermore, both countries employ huge troll armies to influence online debate. In the U.S. case, the Department of Defense alone has at least 60,000 workers attempting to police narratives and influence online discussions. But the network of Western fact-checkers and disinformation experts that has sprung up in the past few years never seems particularly interested in investigating, perhaps because they belong to the same broad team.

 

The NCRI proclaims that its mission is: “to track, expose, and combat misinformation, deception, manipulation, and hate across social media channels.” However, when studying the group’s funding, key figures and its history of attacking alternative media and defending the state of Israel, it often seems like that is exactly what it is producing itself. If the NCRI wanted to catalog disinformation being spread online, they could start by looking closer to home.

Pope Francis could resign as the head of the Roman Catholic Church if his health deteriorates further, the former head of the Vatican’s department of cultural affairs warned on Thursday. Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi said the pontiff would not want to remain in his post if health issues prevented him from having “direct contact” with people.

 

Pope Francis was hospitalized last Friday with severe breathing difficulties after a lengthy bout of bronchitis. According to Vatican officials, the 88-year-old has developed pneumonia in both lungs. He is also being treated for a respiratory tract infection.

 

“I think he could [resign] because he is a person who, from this point of view, is quite decisive in his choices,” Ravasi stated in an interview with Italian radio network RTL. He noted that while the pontiff is known for his tendency to “fight,” and has handled many “demanding” trips despite having to use a wheelchair, he may choose to step down if his ability to communicate with his congregation was compromised.

 

“There is no question that if he found himself in a situation where he was compromised in his ability to have direct contact – as he loves to do – to be able to communicate in an immediate, direct, incisive, and decisive way, then certainly he might consider [resigning],” he added.

 

Ravasi also recalled the pontiff’s 2023 interview marking ten years since he became Pope, in which he said he would step down if he became unable to fulfill his duties due to health problems or an accident. The pontiff noted at the time he had already submitted his pre-signed resignation to Cardinal Bertone, the former Vatican secretary of state. In the interview, Francis said he felt “old” and physically humiliated after being confined to a wheelchair as a result of a knee injury.

 

Sources close to Pope Francis claim he has been gradually recovering. Jesuit Father Antonio Spadaro, a personal friend of the pontiff, told Italian daily Il Corriere della Sera on Wednesday that “the situation is delicate,” but there was “no cause for alarm.” AP reported on Wednesday that Pope Francis has been able to get out of bed and that his heart function was good, citing a Vatican official.

 

Lab tests taken on Wednesday also showed a slight improvement in the Pope’s condition, Italian media reported, citing a statement from the Vatican. The pontiff has reportedly continued working from his hospital room, and had a short meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

 

The pontiff’s predecessor, Benedict XVI, became the first Pope to resign in 600 years when he stepped down in 2013 due to health issues. Pope Francis previously praised Benedict for his resignation, saying he set a “great example” by telling pontiffs “to stop in time.”

Hubble Spies a Spiral That May Be Hiding an Imposter

The sparkling spiral galaxy gracing this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image is UGC 5460, which sits about 60 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major.

This image combines four different wavelengths of light to reveal UGC 5460’s central bar of stars, winding spiral arms, and bright blue star clusters.

Also captured in the upper left-hand corner is a far closer object: a star just 577 light-years away in our own galaxy.

 

UGC 5460 has hosted two recent supernovae: SN 2011ht and SN 2015as.

It’s because of these two stellar explosions that Hubble targeted this galaxy, collecting data for three observing programs that aim to study various kinds of supernovae.

 

SN 2015as was as a core-collapse supernova: a cataclysmic explosion that happens when the core of a star far more massive than the Sun runs out of fuel and collapses under its own gravity, initiating a rebound of material outside the core.

Hubble observations of SN 2015as will help researchers understand what happens when the expanding shockwave of a supernova collides with the gas that surrounds the exploded star.

 

SN 2011ht might have been a core-collapse supernova as well, but it could also be an impostor called a luminous blue variable.

Luminous blue variables are rare stars that experience eruptions so large that they can mimic supernovae.

Crucially, luminous blue variables emerge from these eruptions unscathed, while stars that go supernova do not.

Hubble will search for a stellar survivor at SN 2011ht’s location with the goal of revealing the explosion’s origin.

Cash boost for NASA’s heat resistant microchip tech

Heat-resistant sensing and computing chips made of silicon carbide (SiC) can handle higher voltages, temperatures and radiation levels than silicon alone, and have applications across sectors including transport, energy and space exploration. Engineers at NASA's Glenn Research Center have been exploring its potential, developing an SiC circuit that can withstand 500° C for thousands of hours, with a view to operating on Venus.

 

The new project will scale up NASA's technology and manufacturing process to a modern wafer size and ‘democratise’ SiC chip design.

Additional collaborators include the University of Michigan, GE Aerospace Research, Ozark Integrated Circuits (Ozark IC) and semiconductor manufacturer Wolfspeed.

The project will launch with $2.4 million in initial funding and could receive up to $7.5 million over three years.

 

"NASA, GE Aerospace and Ozark IC have done an amazing job of developing this technology, which is very impactful for a variety of applications,” said principal investigator Becky Peterson, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of the University of Michigan’s Lurie Nanofabrication Facility.

“This project will provide a critical pathway to advance and commercialize that technology.

 

"We need advanced semiconductors produced domestically that can perform in these challenging high temperature environments."

As part of the project, NASA Glenn and GE Aerospace will work together to scale what's referred to as the high temperature SiC junction field effect transistor, or JFET, fabrication process from 100- to 150-millimeter wafers.

“SiC-based high temperature electronics will be a key enabler for delivering new sensor and actuator functionality that improves the capability of future DoD engine platforms,” said Aaron Knobloch, platform leader, controls and electrical systems at GE Aerospace Research.

 

“Beyond jet engines, the ability to handle more extreme temperature capabilities could open exciting new applications in control and sensing for hypersonic applications."

The project is one of 34 technical projects funded in 2024 by the U.S. Department of Defense through the Microelectronics Commons program, established by the CHIPS Act to boost US microelectronics.

How to combat this type of activity?

Everybody does (or tries to do) exactly what is described in this article. Any group that wants to promote its content, or any group that is fighting against the current narrative is going to try to organize and find ways to systematically disseminate and draw in supporters/recruits. Musk calls for deorbiting ISS “as soon as possible”

SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk said that NASA should deorbit the International Space Station “as soon as possible,” preferably in the next two years, to focus on missions to Mars.

The sudden call by Musk to end the ISS years earlier than NASA currently plans, made on social media Feb. 20, threatens to further complicate the relationship between Musk, a close adviser to President Donald Trump, and the space agency and much of the space industry.

 

“It is time to begin preparations for deorbiting the @Space_Station,” Musk posted on X, the social media site he owns. “It has served its purpose. There is very little incremental utility. Let’s go to Mars.”

Asked to clarify if that meant deorbiting the ISS sooner than 2030, NASA’s current date for retiring the station, Musk said it should come down in two years.

“The decision is up to the President, but my recommendation is as soon as possible. I recommend 2 years from now,” he posted.

 

The comments, and the influence Musk currently wields in the administration, threaten to throw a wrench in NASA’s ISS transition plans.

Those plans call for operating the station to 2030, by which time the agency expects at least one commercial space station to be ready do that NASA can continue the research and technology development activities it currently conducts on the ISS.

 

As part of that effort, NASA awarded a $843 million contract to SpaceX in June 2024 to develop a spacecraft called the United States Deorbit Vehicle (USDV), based on the company’s Dragon spacecraft.

The USDV would dock with the station and handle the final maneuvers needed to deorbit the station over a desolate area of the South Pacific to minimize any risk of damage or injury to the public.

 

The spacecraft would launch to the station about a year before the planned deorbiting.

In the procurement of the USDV, NASA stated its preference to have the USDV delivered for launch as soon as August 2028 with a requirement that it be delivered no later than May 2029.

It is unclear if development of the USDV could be accelerated to meet Musk’s goal of a 2027 deorbit.

 

An early deorbit would also complicate relationships with both other companies and organizations involved with the ISS and commercial space station successors as well as the station’s international partners, who have committed to participating on the ISS to 2030 except for Russia, which has so far announced its intent be a part of the station to 2028.

One particular issue is that an early ISS deorbit would almost certainly mean a gap in permanent U.S. human presence in low Earth orbit.

That is the stated goal of NASA’s LEO Microgravity Strategy released in December, which backed what it called “continuous heartbeat,” or having people in orbit continuously.

NASA has previously discussed having an overlap between the ISS and commercial stations to allow for an orderly transition of research and equipment.

 

There are doubts in the industry whether any commercial space station could be ready by 2030, which could force NASA to either accept a gap or further extend the station.

Station developers, though, remain confident, with Vast recently outlining plans for a permanently-crewed station it projects to be ready before 2030 while Axiom updated its plans in December for a station that could support crews as soon as 2028.

Rep. Brian Babin (R-Texas), chairman of the House Science Committee, offered similar comments at the conference. “The International Space Station is a technological marvel without any question, and it served us well for many decades,” he said.

“We must give careful thought to how both the International Space Station and upcoming commercial platforms will play a role in accomplishes the United States’ objectives in low Earth orbit.”

 

It is not certain what caused Musk to call for an early end for the ISS. SpaceX is a major company supporting operations of the station, providing the primary means for NASA astronauts to get to and from the station as well as transporting cargo.

However, Musk’s comments came a few hours after he lashed out at European Space Agency astronaut Andreas Mogensen, who went the station on the Crew-7 mission, using a Crew Dragon, from August 2023 to March 2024.

Mogensen, in a post on X early Feb. 20, criticized Musk for comments made in a television interview Feb. 18 claiming that NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were left on the ISS for political reasons by the Biden administration.

Neither Musk nor others have provided any evidence to support that allegation. “What a lie,” Mogensen wrote.

 

“Idiot,” Musk responded, using even harsher language in the post to describe Mogensen. Musk claimed that SpaceX offered to bring back Williams and Wilmore sooner but that the Biden administration refused.

He did not provide any additional information about that proposal, which neither he nor SpaceX, as well as NASA and the former Biden administration, had previously disclosed.

Less than two and a half hours after his response to Mogensen, Musk posted his call for an early deorbiting of the ISS.

Mining magnate Palmer said his Trumpet of Patriots party would “drain the swamp” in the country’s capital Canberra, a reference to Mr Trump’s plans to drastically cut the size of government.

He failed to register UAP in time for 2025’s election that must be held by May.

Law Enforcement Cooperation Between United States and Mexico Results in Mexican Takedown of Cartel-Linked Alien Smugglers

Last night, extensive bilateral cooperation between the United States and Mexico resulted in the Mexico Attorney General’s Office “Fiscalía General de la República” (FGR) conducting a significant enforcement operation to dismantle a prolific transnational alien smuggling organization operating in Juarez, Chihuahua, along the U.S.-Mexico border.

 

The targeted alien smuggling organization, a group based in Juarez, Mexico, utilizes smuggling corridors centered in the Anapra, Chihuahua / Santa Teresa, New Mexico area, employs Mexican nationals, many of whom are current and former members of various Mexico-based cartels, and is alleged to be responsible for illegally smuggling large numbers of individuals, including children, from Central America into El Paso, Texas. The criminal organization is also alleged to have kidnapped aliens seeking to enter the United States illegally and extorted their families for money before completing their smuggling journey. The enforcement operation included the execution of two arrest warrants in Mexico for alleged alien smugglers Brian Alan Torres Gonzalez and Soledad Morales Nava. Torres and Morales are Mexican citizens and will be prosecuted in Mexico in part with evidence provided by the United States.

 

“On her first day in office, the Attorney General directed the Department of Justice to prioritize efforts to achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and empowered Joint Task Force Alpha (JTFA) to increase their contributions to this fight,” said Supervisory Official Antoinette T. Bacon of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “Today’s action by Mexican authorities is the latest example of how JTFA provides critical contributions to marshal the investigative and prosecutorial resources of the Department, and its law enforcement partners, to target human smugglers and enhance coordination in transnational law enforcement efforts to better combat these criminal organizations.”

 

U.S. authorities provided assistance to the Mexico Attorney General’s Office through coordination under JTFA, which, since its creation in 2021, has marshalled the investigative and prosecutorial resources of the Department of Justice, in partnership with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), to enhance U.S. enforcement efforts against the most prolific and dangerous human smuggling and trafficking groups operating in Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Colombia, and Panama. Attorney General Pamela Bondi has elevated JTFA to the Office of the Attorney General, to be jointly supervised by the Office of the Deputy Attorney General. The task force focuses on disrupting and dismantling smuggling and trafficking networks that abuse, exploit, and endanger migrants, pose national security threats, or are involved in organized crime. JTFA comprises detailees from U.S. Attorneys’ Offices along the border, along with dedicated prosecutor support by numerous components of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, led by the Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section (HRSP) and supported by the Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section; the Office of Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training; the Narcotic and Dangerous Drug Section; the Office of Enforcement Operations; the Office of International Affairs; and the Violent Crime and Racketeering Section. JTFA also relies on substantial law enforcement investment from DHS, FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and other partners. To date, JTFA’s work has resulted in more than 350 domestic and international arrests of leaders, organizers, and significant facilitators of human smuggling; more than 300 U.S. convictions; more than 245 defendants sentenced, including significant jail sentences imposed; and substantial seizures and forfeitures of assets and contraband including millions of dollars in cash, real property, vehicles, firearms and ammunition, and drugs.

 

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations (ICE HSI) El Paso assisted foreign investigative efforts in the United States, working in concert with the U.S. Border Patrol. Support from ICE HSI-Mexico City was critical in providing coordination between American and Mexican law enforcement agencies. The Justice Department — including the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas in El Paso, HRSP, and the Office of the Judicial Attache in Mexico City — provided significant assistance in this matter.

US military releases first photo from orbit from its mysterious space plane

There aren’t a ton of specifics about what the military’s X-37B has been up to in space, but we now know one thing for certain: The view is pretty good.

On Thursday, Feb. 20, the Space Force released a single photo taken from the X-37B space plane, posted to the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service, or DVIDS.

The photo caption says the image was taken from “[a]n X-37B onboard camera, used to ensure the health and safety of the vehicle” and “captures an image of Earth while conducting experiments in a highly elliptical orbit in 2024.”

 

The photo captures part of the robotic space plane and a detailed look at the Earth. It’s not quite William Anders’ “Earthrise” picture, but does show the level of quality on the X-37B’s cameras, as well as a sense of just how far in orbit it is.

 

The exact date and time of the photo are unclear beyond being taken in 2024. As for where it is, well it’s aptly listed as being in the “Space Force area of responsibility.”

The X-37B took off on Dec. 28, 2023. While Space Force is open about launch dates and the final length in time for each of the space plane’s missions, exact details on its actions in orbit have been vague.

Aside from a few brief lists of experiments on board, this photo is the clearest look at the in-orbit action.

The X-37B, designed to function somewhere between a plane and a satellite, is on a heavily elliptical orbit, according to details released by Space Force.

 

The space plane, made by Boeing, has been conducting orbital tests since 2010. Its previous mission, which ended Nov. 12, 2022, ran 908 days.

It was the longest X-37B mission. On this mission, OTV-7, the X-37B is conducting several new tests. One of the biggest, conducted in recent months, was the first of its kind aerobraking experiment.

In November 2024 it began using drag from the friction of the atmosphere to adjust its orbit, using the resistance in place of burning fuel.

The move also let it jettison its payload module in a way designed to safely dispose of any space debris.

 

While Space Force and the U.S. military as a whole have put a lot of attention and effort into building up its satellite network in orbit, both for greater communication capabilities and for missile detection purposes, the X-37B has been a steady part of military tests for space.

The space plane concept as a whole has been so important that it ended up in the service branch’s first official portrait.

China tests robot on board Tiangong space station

China has carried out its first in-orbit test of an inspection robot on board its Tiangong space station.

The test, designed to check that the robot could be used effectively to maintain pipes and operate safely, was carried out last month, according to the China Manned Space Agency.

 

The Shenzhou-19 crew currently stationed on board the space station put it through its paces in a simulated network of complex piping.

The agency said: “During the test, the robot smoothly and reliably passed through straight pipes, curved pipes and tapered pipes of various diameters.”

 

Pipelines on the space station come in different shapes and sizes and feature large differences in diameter as well as sudden changes in dimension, making it difficult for a robot to adapt and increasing the risk it will get stuck.

To ensure the device was sufficiently flexible and adaptable, the developers looked to the movements of the hydraulic tube feet that marine animals such as starfish use to move.

Senate adopts $340 billion budget blueprint for Trump's agenda after marathon 'vote-a-rama'

The 52-48 overnight vote puts pressure on the GOP-controlled House, which plans to take up its own competing budget resolution next week.1/2

 

WASHINGTON — The Republican-controlled Senate on Friday morning adopted a $340 billion budget blueprint designed to boost funding for President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement efforts, energy production and the military.

 

The mostly partly-line vote came just before 5 a.m. ET following an all-night “vote-a-rama,” in which senators cast votes on 33 amendments over the course of a 10-hour span. The final vote was 52-48, with Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., as the lone Republican to join all 47 Democrats in voting against the budget resolution.

 

“Without this bill passing,” said Senate Budget Committee Chair Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., “there is no hope of getting money for the border.”

 

Passage of the Senate plan now puts pressure on the GOP-controlled House, which plans to take up its own competing budget resolution next week. In addition to money for the border, defense and energy, that version also includes a $4.5 trillion tax cut and a $4 trillion debt limit hike.

 

Trump has endorsed the House version — what he calls "one big, beautiful bill" — but GOP senators have indicated that their version could be a fallback plan if the House blueprint fails.

 

“To my House colleagues: We will all get there together. If you can pass the one big, beautiful bill that makes the tax cuts permanent — not four or five years — then we’ll all cheer over here. Nothing would please me more than Speaker [Mike] Johnson being able to put together the bill that President Trump wants," Graham said on the Senate floor Thursday, before voting began.

 

"I want that to happen, but I cannot sit on the sidelines and not have a plan B."

 

Paul, a fiscal hawk, said the budget contradicts GOP rhetoric about reducing spending.

 

“If we were fiscally conservative, why wouldn’t we take the savings from Elon Musk and DOGE and move it over here and help with the border?” Paul said on the Senate floor before voting began. “Why would we be doing a brand new bill to increase spending by $340 billion?”

 

Under the process, Senate rules allow for members to propose an unlimited number of amendments.

 

Democrats sought to force Republicans to take difficult votes through amendments, which the majority party voted down one by one. Many were aimed at protecting benefits and programs they say the GOP is targeting for cuts. One amendment proposed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., would have prohibited the bill from cutting taxes for the wealthy if even $1 is cut from Medicaid, a health care program for low-income Americans.

 

It was rejected 49-51, with just two Republicans joining Democrats in favor of it: Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Josh Hawley, R-Mo.

 

Just two amendments passed. One of them, offered by Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, would create "a deficit-neutral reserve fund relating to protecting Medicare and Medicaid." But Democrats balked at the proposal, saying it was designed to give political cover to Republicans on the issue and that millions of Americans would lose their coverage.

"The language in this amendment is code for kicking Americans with Medicaid coverage off their health insurance if they’re not sick enough, not poor enough, or not disabled enough," said Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., who spoke in opposition.

 

The budget resolution instructs Senate committees to craft legislation that satisfies its goals, which can be fast-tracked to the floor and passed by a simple majority.

 

The measure seeks $175 billion for immigration and border enforcement, on the request of the Trump administration’s border czar, Tom Homan. And it calls for expanding the military by $150 billion, even as Trump and Elon Musk say they want to cut costs at the Pentagon. It also directs committees to find spending cuts to pay for it all.

 

The “budget reconciliation” process allows members to bypass the 60-vote threshold in the Senate, but it limits provisions to spending and taxes. Democrats can challenge policies that run afoul of the “Byrd rule” constraints and call on the Senate parliamentarian to strip them out.

 

For months, Republicans in the House and the Senate have clashed over whether the party should try to pass Trump’s legislative priorities in one reconciliation bill or two.

 

But Wednesday, Trump gave a full-throated endorsement to the House's strategy, taking to Truth Social to say he wanted “ONE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL” and urging the Senate to pump the brakes on their two-bill reconciliation push. The House plan calls for a sweeping package that includes border enforcement, expanding energy production and renewing the expiring 2017 Trump tax cuts.

 

The Senate plan would be narrower and would not include renewing the tax cuts that were a signature accomplishment of Trump's first term. Instead, those tax cuts would come in a second reconciliation package later this year, senators have said.

 

If the House and the Senate can get on the same page and pass an identical budget resolution, that would only be the start of a very long and complicated legislative process. In the House, conservatives are demanding steep spending cuts, while more moderate Republicans are getting skittish due to potential cuts to Medicaid.

 

“The budget resolution is just patty cake. The real work begins when you start putting together the bill and the pay-fors,” said Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., a member of both the budget and the appropriations committees. “The only prediction I’ll make is that a reconciliation bill will not pass either the House or the Senate without substantial spending reductions.”

 

Vice President JD Vance, who met with senators this week, said he believed Congress is “on track” to pass a reconciliation package in May or June, while acknowledging that was an ambitious timeline.

 

“I think the president has learned a lot about how D.C. works. And I actually talked to the president about this yesterday, and he said to me, ‘Look, it’s very rare that you can get two reconciliation bills done in one Congress,’ which is why he thinks we’ve got to do a lot with that one big beautiful bill,” Vance said during an appearance Thursday at the Conservative Political Action Conference.

 

“It’s early, right? This stuff takes time to put together,” he continued. “I think if you had a record-pace reconciliation bill, we would get this thing done in May or in June. I think we’re on track to do that.”

Japan’s capital lies on the eastern shore of Honshu, the largest of Japan’s four main islands.

Tokyo city has more than 14 million inhabitants, while the Greater Tokyo Area, which includes Tokyo and parts of the neighbouring prefectures, is home to more than 40 million people.

 

The bright grey and white tones of this urban conurbation dominate the centre of the image and are in sharp contrast to the colours in the ocean and water bodies.

Three main rivers can be seen winding through the urban area, then flowing into Tokyo Bay. The central river is the Arakawa, with the Edo river to the north and the Tama to the south.

Tokyo’s centre lies mainly south of the Arakawa river, while at the mouth of the Tama, the runways of Haneda Airport are also visible.

 

This image is a combination of three radar acquisitions during 2024 and highlights changes that occurred between each capture.

A colour is assigned to each acquisition date: red for 16 August, green for 28 August and blue for 9 September.

 

Shades of grey indicate areas with no changes, such as the Tokyo Metropolitan Area with a high density of structures and buildings, which appear bright grey or white.

The mix of colours in the ocean water denotes changes on the surface, which occurred during the dates of acquisition, caused by winds or currents.

Ships in Tokyo Bay appear as multi-coloured dots, with the colour corresponding to the date of acquisition.

 

In the top right corner, Lake Kasumigaura stands out in dark blue hues, due to its surface roughness during the third acquisition.

One of the activities carried out on Kasumigaura is pearl cultivation, with its structures seen as white, rectangular features on the lake.

 

Radar data are particularly useful for detecting surface features and are therefore used to map the topography.

For example, in the left side of the image we can see the mountain reliefs of the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park in the upper part and Mount Fuji to its south near the coast.

The Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission provides all-weather, day-and-night radar imagery of Earth’s land and oceans, which is useful for monitoring evolving situations, such as ground movements, urban development and ship tracking.

Critical Race Theory and the ‘Hyper-White’ Jew

What can we do?

 

First, not only must Jews reject the victim narrative, we must also decline to participate in any “us” versus “them” paradigm. Despite a long history of persecution, Jews have continually found ways to thrive. Even with a clear-eyed view of a past in which Jews have been objectively victimized and oppressed, Jews have not historically clung to victimhood. Were it not for the “victim” versus “oppressor” narrative in which Jews must either admit to being oppressors or adopt a victim identity, Jews would not feel the need to cling to it now. A Jewish lens allows for complexity and nuance, rather than requiring everyone to play one of those two roles.

 

Second, while there are wounds to heal within the global Jewish family, a distinction between “white” Jews and “Jews of color” is not a concept that emanates from Judaism or Jewish culture. It is incumbent upon Jews to reject this framing altogether. More pointedly, of all people, Jews have the historical standing and moral imperative to denounce the ascription of moral virtue or blame as a function of race.

 

Third, only in defending the right to speak freely do we defend the disempowered. Jews know what it means to be silenced and must become the bulwark against a culture of censoriousness and censorship. Jews must defend the right to say the most distasteful, abhorrent, and even antisemitic things — while at the same time making the most persuasive arguments against those views.

 

Fourth, treasuring the habits of a free mind and appreciating the importance of truth-seeking are essential Jewish values. Critical social justice ideology relies on denigrating critical thinking and reason while promoting logical tautologies and groupthink. By contrast, Jewish culture is one of curiosity, education, disagreement, and dissent. It is a culture of “argument for the sake of Heaven.”

 

Fifth, the critical social justice story is an apocalyptic narrative of condemnation, powerlessness, and destruction. Its champions acknowledge that it rarely provides “concrete solutions.” By contrast, Jewish stories of social justice are narratives of overcoming adversity, being responsible for one’s actions, grappling with complexity and finding no perfect answers, and being fundamentally free. Esther saves the Jews from slaughter. Moses leads the Israelites out of slavery. Abraham argues with God. It is time for Jews to invoke our own social justice story, one that allows agency even for victims,

forgives rather than shames, and embraces rather than condemns.

 

Finally, Jewish culture is ideally suited to coexist with a liberal, pluralist society premised on the equal dignity of each individual. It also suggests a path toward true social justice by calling on all of us to make the world a better place, while acknowledging that our efforts will be imperfect. A Jewish social justice paradigm will always seek to advance the causes of freedom and equality for all, which in turn will safeguard Jewish life and culture as well.

 

Let us return for a final moment to our campus story. Must this ideological indoctrination be what Jewish college students have to either endure or adopt over the course of four years?

 

Not necessarily.

 

But if this is to change, it will take a concerted effort by Jewish leaders, individuals, and organizations to remind us all that we are not characters in others’ scripts. We are not required to play the parts that others have written. We can and we must reject any identity and any worldview that is inconsistent with our own past and our own social justice story. Jewish values and habits of mind are among the gifts of our heritage. Only when we are true to who we are and strive to be as Jews can we do our part to repair the world.

Bondi Directs DOJ to Challenge Biden’s Death Row Commutations

Former President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of several killers on death row at the last minute before leaving office.

 

Now, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi wants to reverse those decisions and tell state officials to go after the death penalty for the inmates.

 

Bondi wrote a letter to Department of Justice (DOJ) employees on Wednesday about the commutes. In the letter, she said that Biden’s decision to grant the commutes “undermine[d] our justice system and subvert[ed] the rule of law.”

 

“The commutations also robbed the victims’ families of the justice promised — and fought hard to achieve — by the Department of Justice,” Bondi wrote. “The Department of Justice is directed to immediately commence the following actions to achieve justice for the victims’ families of the 37 commuted murderers.”

 

“Explore opportunities to provide a public forum for the victims’ families to express how the commutations affected them personally,” Bondi said, calling it an “important step” toward building trust and holding people accountable, Fox News reported.

 

Bondi said she would tell U.S. attorneys’ offices to use state law instead of federal law to go after people whose death sentences had been reduced. She said this would only happen “where appropriate and legally permissible” and “after consultation with the families of the victims and other interested parties.”

 

“The Capital Case Section shall assist the United States Attorney’s Offices in implementing this directive,” Bondi’s letter stated.

 

“Third, the Federal Bureau of Prisons is directed to ensure that the conditions of confinement for each of the 37 commuted murderers are consistent with the security risks those inmates present because of their egregious crimes, criminal histories, and all other relevant considerations,” she added.

 

In late December, Biden took 37 people off of federal death row and changed their sentences to life in prison without the chance of release.

 

The White House said at the time that the move would stop President-elect Donald Trump’s government from “carrying out the execution sentences that would not be handed down under current policy and practice.”

 

“The President’s criminal justice record has transformed individual lives and positively impacted communities, especially historically marginalized communities,” the White House statement said at the time. “In the coming weeks, the President will take additional steps to provide meaningful second chances and continue to review additional pardons and commutations.”

 

Biden only left three mass killers on death row: Dylann Roof, who killed nine people at a church in Charleston, South Carolina; Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who set off the bombs at the Boston Marathon; and Robert Bowers, who shot up the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018.

 

Bondi made headlines last week after the DOJ filed a lawsuit against New York state, Gov. Kathy Hochul, and Attorney General Letitia James, accusing them of violating federal law by shielding illegal immigrants.

 

“This is a new DOJ,” Bondi announced at a news conference. “New York has chosen to prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens. It stops. It stops today.”

President Trump is making plans to disband the governing board that oversees the U.S. Postal Service and absorb the agency into his administration, throwing the future of the mail provider’s quasigovernmental status into doubt.

 

Trump is preparing to issue an executive order, possibly this week, to fire the members of the Postal Service’s governing board and to put the agency under the direct control of the Commerce Department, according to two government officials. The plan was earlier reported by the Washington Post late Thursday.

 

The Postal Service board is expected to fight the move and is exploring legal action, one official said. It is uncertain whether they would be able to stop the order though since its members are appointed by the U.S. president and confirmed by the Senate.

 

The plans renew questions over the future of the 250-year-old Postal Service. In December, then-President-elect Trump said at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida that he was considering privatizing the agency, which he frequently pushed for during his first term.

 

This week, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said he would step down after five years into a 10-year term. According to two officials, the Trump White House had been considering replacing DeJoy, whom Trump had appointed in 2020.

The Postal Service and the White House didn’t respond to requests for comment.

 

The Postal Service has been hemorrhaging money for years because of declining mail volumes, limits on what it can charge customers and a costly mandate to deliver to 168 million delivery addresses six days a week. Until 2022, it was also required to pre-fund its retiree health benefits.

The mail provider is a critical service that employs more than 600,000 people to staff post offices in every zip code, delivering medications, parcels and letters, as well as millions of e-commerce packages every day.

 

In 2024, the agency reported a net loss of $9.5 billion, which, after adjusting for workers’ compensation and retirement liabilities, resulted in a controllable loss of $1.8 billion. With almost no funding from the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and other services to fund its operations.

“This is a somewhat regal approach that says the king knows better than his subjects and he will do his best for them. But it also removes any sense that there’s oversight, impartiality and fairness and that some states wouldn’t be treated better than other states or cities better than other cities,” said James O’Rourke, who studies the Postal Service at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. “The anxiety over the Postal Service is not only three-quarters of a million workers. It’s that this is something that does not belong to the president or the White House. It belongs to the American people.”

 

After this story was published, a White House spokesperson said no such executive order was planned. A representative for Postal Service did not respond to a request for comment.

Rep. Rich McCormick faced an angry crowd Thursday during a town hall in his Georgia district, where many constituents lashed out at the Republican lawmaker over his support for massive federal layoffs and budget cuts by the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency.

 

In video of the event taken by Greg Bluestein, a reporter for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and an NBC News contributor, attendees clashed with McCormick, bashing both President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk who is helping lead DOGE's efforts to drastically reduce government spending.

 

In one instance, an attendee referred to recent cuts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by asking, “Why is the supposedly conservative party taking such a radical and extremist and sloppy approach to this?”

 

McCormick respondedthat “a lot of the work they do is duplicitous with AI.”

“If we continue to grow the size of government and we can’t afford it, it’s going to have shortfalls in your Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security,” McCormick added at the event in Roswell, about 20 miles from the CDC headquarters.

 

The attendee shot back that the administration was taking a “chainsaw approach” to dismissing its employees and the layoff effort was being “jammed down the pipe, so rushed and sloppily.”

 

After McCormick said that a department or agency makes its own decisions about whom to cut from its workforcewhen given a directive about head count, people in the audience could be heard saying, “No!” with one person saying, “Elon Musk is deciding.”

 

The town hall was also punctuated by constituents saying, “we’re pissed,” and “don’t bend over,” as well as chants of “shame!”

 

As McCormick struggled to respond to the interruptions from the crowd and suggested he was offering solutions and people didn’t “want to hear,” one person can be heard shouting, “We want to work with someone better.”

 

McCormick handily won re-election last year, winning 64.9% of the vote in a state that Trump flipped after narrowly losing the battleground to Joe Biden in 2020.

 

One person who raised budget concerns Thursday could be heard telling McCormick that he had done a “disservice” and had failed to “stand up for us.”

 

In another instance, an attendee asked McCormick how he plans to “rein in the megalomaniac in the White House” following Trump’s “LONG LIVE THE KING” post on Truth Social, a question that was met by cheers and some people rising to their feet.

 

“When you talk about tyranny, when you talk about presidential power, I remember having the same discussion with Republicans when Biden was elected,” McCormick said, to boos from the attendees.

 

“I don’t want to see any president be too powerful,” McCormick added.

 

At different points during the town hall, McCormick made attempts to quiet the crowd, saying at one point, “If you’re gonna yell at me, that’s not going to be an effective town hall," and later telling attendees, "Nobody can hear when you’re yelling."

 

A spokesperson for McCormick did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday night on the town hall.

PLD Space expands global launch network with new Oman spaceport

US prosecutors and regulators are investigating a $32 million deal between CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. and a technology distributor to provide cybersecurity tools to the Internal Revenue Service, according to two people familiar with the matter and a document seen by Bloomberg News.

Investigators for the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission have been interviewing people and collecting records related to the deal, according to the document and people. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the matter.

Carahsoft Technology Corp. paid CrowdStrike for the deal that the cybersecurity firm closed on the last day of a fiscal quarter in 2023, but the IRS never purchased the products, Bloomberg first reported

in October. The transaction under investigation was big enough that it could have made the difference between CrowdStrike beating or missing Wall Street projections for the period, although the Austin, Texas-based company has declined to detail how it accounted for the deal. The day after CrowdStrike reported results for the record quarter, its shares rose 10%.

The parallel probes, which haven’t been previously reported, also represent additional scrutiny of Carahsoft, a dominant reseller of technology to the US government. The FBI searched the firm’s headquarters last year, and federal prosecutors are conducting a separate civil investigation of whether the company conspired with another technology firm to overcharge the government.

Musk hits back at astronaut who called his space station mission a 'lie' in vicious online back and fourth

Elon Musk has been caught up in an ugly online spat after an astronaut blasted his mission to return two stranded NASA astronauts as a 'lie.'

The SpaceX founder vowed on Wednesday to return Butch Wilmore, 62, and Sunita Williams, 59, to Earth 'within about four weeks' as he hit out at the Biden administration for abandoning them in space in an interview with Sean Hannity.

'They were left up there for political reasons, which is not good,' Musk claimed in the interview, with Trump adding '[Biden] was going to leave them in space. I think he was going to leave them in space.'

 

But Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen, who in 2023 piloted a mission for SpaceX, rebuked the claim.

'What a lie,' the 48-year-old European Space Agency astronaut wrote on X. 'And from someone who complains about lack of honesty from the mainstream media.'

Musk did not take well to the criticism, calling Mogensen 'fully r*.

'SpaceX could have brought them back several months ago. I OFFERED THIS DIRECTLY to the Biden administration and they refused. Return WAS pushed back for political reasons. Idiot.'

 

Still, Mogensen doubled down on his criticism of Musk's claim.

'Elon I have long admired you and what you accomplished, especially at SpaceX and Tesla,' he wrote back, taking the high ground.

'You know as well as I do that Butch and Suni are returning with Crew-9, as has been the plan since last September.

'Even now, you are not sending up a rescue ship to bring them home. They are returning on the Dragon capsule and that has been on [the International Space Station] since last September.'

 

Williams and Wilmore left Earth inside Boeing's Starliner capsule to the International Space Station in early June with plans of an eight-day stay on the ship.

But after an issue was identified with their capsule, they were stranded.

After weeks of tests, NASA ultimately decided that Starliner was not safe enough to carry humans back to Earth and in September, the doomed spacecraft was sent home empty.

By September, SpaceX launched a Crew Dragon Capsule in an effort to rescue the pair. It successfully arrived at the space station, but has not yet been cleared to attempt to return to Earth with them on board.

 

President Donald Trump and Musk have since blamed the Biden administration for Wilmore and Williams extended stay.

After taking office, Trump wrote that he and Musk had a plan to bring the duo home sooner than anticipated in a TruthSocial post.

'I have just asked Elon Musk and SpaceX to 'go get' the two brave astronauts who have been virtually abandoned by the Biden administration,' Trump wrote on January 28.

'They have been waiting many months on [the] Space Station. Elon will soon be on his way. Hopefully, all will be safe. Good luck Elon!!!'

 

NASA then announced that the pair will return home on March 19, about two weeks earlier than the previous schedule, after launching the incoming crew on March 12.

Despite the setbacks, Wilmore and Williams have denied that they feel abandoned.

'We don't feel abandoned. We don't feel stuck. We don't feel stranded,' Wilmore told CNN. 'I understand why others may think that. We come prepared.

 

Still, the astronauts admitted they needed to come home, but noted that keeping the normal cycle of astronauts on the ISS going is critical.

This handover period requires a new crew to take over the ISS from the previous crew.

Williams and Wilmore's relief crew have been named as NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Takuya Onishi and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov.

The incoming crew will meet with Williams and Wilmore for a brief about ongoing scientific and maintenance projects that they will be taking over.

Rubio explains purpose of Russia-US talks

 

The meeting in Saudi Arabia aimed to revive diplomacy between nuclear superpowers, according to the US secretary of state

 

The US and Russia sought to restore normal diplomatic relations during this week's talks in Saudi Arabia because global nuclear powers must communicate to resolve conflicts such as the one in Ukraine, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said.

CRISPR manipulation of UFO gene reveals complex plant flowering dynamics

Humans have appreciated the beauty of flowers for centuries. Yet, flowers aren't just aesthetically pleasing. They also play a crucial role in plant reproduction.

In all plants, a well-studied gene with a curious name, Unusual Floral Organs (UFO), orchestrates the flowering process.

UFO expression hinges on another complex process called cis-regulation. And this one has remained a "black box" of plant biology research for years.

 

Now, using CRISPR gene editing, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) Professor and HHMI Investigator Zachary Lippman and his colleagues have begun to uncover the ways in which fragments of non-coding DNA called cis-regulatory sequences dictate how, when, and at what level UFO is expressed.

The research is published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

 

Lippman says this work could one day help researchers make better decisions about which genes to manipulate for more desirable crops.

He explains, "We could have chosen many other genes. We chose this one because it was pretty clear it was going to have that kind of exquisite control.

That's because the flower is a complex structure, and the genes that control its development are very regulated in time, space, and levels."

 

The researchers focused on two distantly related flowering plants: tomato and Arabidopsis.

First, they identified DNA sequences that don't code for proteins but are still present in the segment of DNA that turns UFO on and off in both plants.

 

The mere fact the sequences are conserved makes them good candidates for targeting, Lippman says.

"It's a good indication that those sequences have been selected by evolution because they're important in controlling gene expression." However, he adds,

"You can't know until you actually do mutations in those sequences and see what happens."

 

Lippman and his team manipulated those non-coding sequences with CRISPR to see how it would affect flower formation. They discovered that the sequences strongly impact flowering in both plants.

However, manipulations affect each species differently. For example, deleting a certain sequence in tomatoes resulted in flower formation, but deleting the matching sequence in Arabidopsis suppressed flowering.

 

"It's fascinating that different deletions had opposite effects on flowering," says CSHL postdoc Amy Lanctot.

"It seems these sequences act together to balance each other out and make sure plants are flowering at the right place and time."

The finding could help biologists better understand how cis-regulatory fragments control gene function. "The goal is to reach a better understanding of how functionally complex cis-regulatory DNA is," Lippman says.

"If we can do that, we can better determine which sequences we want to mutate and what kind of mutations we want to make."

Anthony Ricco, one of the lawyers representing Sean “Diddy” Combs in his federal case, has entered a bid to withdraw as the imprisoned mogul’s counsel, according to a motion filed on Friday morning.

In the motion, Ricco is vague about the reasons why he wants to withdraw from representing Combs, whose trial is set to begin in May. “Although I have provided Sean Combs with the high level of legal representation expected by the court, under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel for Sean Combs,” he wrote. He also noted that there are “sufficient reasons” protected by attorney/client privilege for him to be terse in his application to withdrawal.

Ricco’s motion must be approved by the judge, and the attorney states that no delay in jury selection or the trial itself would transpire. The motion notes that he informed the government of his intention to withdraw, and that the government took no position on the motion.

Ricco was initially hired in Sept. 2024, and is one of several lawyers representing Combs in his federal case. Marc Agnifilo and and Teny Geragos will continue on as counsel.

Representatives for Combs, as well as Ricco, did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment.

Combs is currently incarcerated in Brooklyn as he awaits trial. In Sept. 2024, he was charged with racketeering conspiracy; sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion; and transportation to engage in prostitution. Last week, a lawsuit that named both him and Jay-Z was dismissed by a Jane Doe who accused them of sexual assault, and Combs himself filed a separate defamation lawsuit for $100 million against NBCUniversal, Peacock and Ample Entertainment over their “Making of a Bad Boy” documentary.

ABL Space renamed Long Wall as it shifts focus to defense market

ABL Space, once an emerging contender in the commercial launch industry, is rebranding as Long Wall as it pivots away from launching small satellites to focus on defense applications, including missile defense and hypersonic flight testing.

 

The company, founded in 2017 in El Segundo, California, initially sought to disrupt the small satellite launch market with its RS1 rocket, a low-cost, rapidly deployable vehicle designed to be transported in standard shipping containers.

However, the venture struggled to gain traction, suffering two failed orbital launch attempts in 2023 and 2024.

Facing stiff competition from established players like SpaceX and Rocket Lab, as well as financial challenges, ABL ultimately decided to shift gears.

 

On Feb. 19, founder and CEO Dan Piemont announced in a company blog post that ABL would rebrand as Long Wall, a name inspired by the defensive structures built by ancient Athens to protect against sieges.

The company’s focus is developing containerized missile defense systems and target rockets for U.S. military applications.

The Defense Department has made clear its need for more cost-effective solutions for hypersonic flight testing and missile defense, Piemont said.

 

Under its new strategy, the company will offer deployable missile defense and hypersonic test vehicles, repurposing its RS1 rocket as a target vehicle for military testing.

These rockets would be used to simulate incoming threats in live-fire exercises or test advanced missile interceptors.

 

Long Wall has yet to disclose any signed contracts or customers. The pivot aligns with a broader trend of space startups shifting toward defense work amid challenges in the commercial market.

The transition is also driven by expectations of lucrative opportunities driven by rising geopolitical tensions and increased Pentagon interest in hypersonic and missile defense capabilities.

Trump allies believe Zelensky should leave Ukraine ‘immediately’ – media

 

There is widespread opposition to the Ukrainian leader within the White House, according to the New York Post

 

Vladimir Zelensky should leave Ukraine “immediately” and move to France so as not to impede peace talks with Russia, a source close to US President Donald Trump has said, according to the New York Post. The outlet reported that frustration with Zelensky is growing in the White House.

 

Tensions between Washington and Kiev escalated this week after Zelensky criticized Trump for ending the period of diplomatic non-engagement with Russia. On Tuesday, US and Russian officials met in Saudi Arabia for high-level talks aimed at restoring ties and addressing the Ukraine conflict.

 

Zelensky has demanded a seat at the negotiating table, although Trump has said he and other Ukrainian officials are in no position to complain. He further blamed Zelensky for failing to resolve the conflict with Russia despite having years to do so.

 

A source familiar with White House discussions told the New York Post thatthe developments are “nothing new,” adding “I heard months ago it’s time for an election [in Ukraine] and new leadership.”

 

The source emphasized that opposition to Zelensky is widespread within the West Wing.

 

According to another person close to Trump, “the best case for [Zelensky] and the world is that he leaves to France immediately.”

 

Zelensky, whose presidential term expired in May 2024, has refused to hold a new election, citing martial law due to the ongoing conflict.

 

On Tuesday, Trump suggested that Zelensky’s leadership lacks legitimacy and that “he’s down at a 4% approval rating.” Trump later posted on his Truth Social platform that Zelensky “refuses to have Elections, is very low in Ukrainian Polls,”saying he “better move fast or he is not going to have a Country left.”

 

Zelensky responded by accusing Trump of repeating “Russian disinformation” and citing a presidential poll that has him at 57%. “If somebody wants to replace me right now, it will not happen,” he said.

 

An internal poll cited by The Economist on Wednesday suggested that Zelensky would lose to his former commander-in-chief, Valery Zaluzhny, by a large margin if elections were held in Ukraine today. According to data cited in the report, Zelensky “would lose a future election by 30% to 65% to Valery Zaluzhny,” if the latter ran for office. Zaluzhny currently serves as Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK.

 

Zelensky’s popularity skyrocketed to 90% during the first months of the conflict with Russia in 2022, but has since decreased due to mounting losses on the battlefield and problems with the economy.

 

Russia has also said it considers Zelensky “illegitimate” and recognizes the Ukrainian parliament and its speaker as the only legitimate authority in the country.

As Zelenskyy continues to drive Ukraine further into complete destruction, it’s only a matter of time before he is either killed in the process of conflict or at the hands of his own people.

 

The constant flow of young Ukrainians being sent into an impossible and suicidal confrontation with Russian Forces is being seriously questioned among Ukrainians.

 

They are seeing the return from the Battlefields of tens of thousands of Bodybags and Coffins containing the remains of their loved ones. Fathers, husbands, and sons.

 

The next generation of Ukrainians won’t exist simply because it will be impossible for them to be born.

 

The US-sponsored proxy war with Russia which has been fermenting since around 2002, has manifested slowly into the most unbelievably wreckless dispatch of so many Ukrainians. Estimates of between 100,000 and 300,000 dead Servicemen and three times the amount of wounded. It’s almost impossible to get a fix on the exact numbers as they are constantly obscured by the Kiev regime.

 

Zelenskyy continues with his daily statements of inflammatory and deluded rhetoric. “Ukraine will win,” even though it’s blindingly obvious that Ukraine is outnumbered and outgunned by Russia and NATO isn’t coming to the fight. “We can’t win without Western Weapons,” he says, over a year into his ill-conceived “War Plan.”

 

But it is drawing to an end. Western enthusiasm for “Poor Ukraine,” is at the point of public, political, and diplomatic exhaustion. “The collective West,” has collectively had enough of Zelenskyy’s continuous demands and huge shopping lists.

 

“We can win if you give us this or that or the next thing,” has grown old and tiresome. It’s impossible for the Cocaine-fuelled Shrimp Zelenskyy and his crew of retarded Banderites not to see this.

 

The moment will come when Zelenskyy will have to leave the country or risk being captured or strung from a Lamppost in Kiev by his own people. If we in the West have had enough, the Ukrainian people must certainly have had enough. He has achieved nothing and lost everything.

 

Western Nations don’t want to be in conflict or at war with Russia. We are past that stage in our evolution, yet here we are. 2023 with a raging conflict bringing death and destruction to our doorstep. And not just any old death and destruction. This could easily go Nuclear. It wouldn’t take much as we’ve already reached so many danger points.

 

Sitting safely away some 7,000 miles to the West are those responsible for this whole disgusting enterprise.
