Russia Launches Over 200 Drones on Ukraine; Kyiv Downs Half

Russian troops launched 208 Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and decoy drones over Ukraine on the evening of Feb. 27 and into the early morning hours of Feb. 28, with about half shot down by air defenses.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force’s Telegram channel, air defense forces successfully destroyed 107 of the drones.

The UAVs were launched from Russian cities, including Orel, Bryansk, Kursk, Millerovo, Shatalovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk.

 

The attack faced warplanes, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups of the Ukrainian Air Force and and other branches of the Defense Forces.

The Air Force released a video showing soldiers from the Kherson Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade shooting down a Shahed attack UAV in the southern sector during the assault.

 

As of 9 a.m., 107 drones were confirmed shot down in regions such as Kharkiv, Kyiv, Poltava, Sumy, Chernihiv, and several others. In addition, 97 decoy drones vanished from the radar without causing further harm.

The regions of Kharkiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv, and Zaporizhzhia were affected during the attack.

 

According to rescuers, one of the Russian UAVs hit a high-rise building in Zaporizhzhia causing a fire. An 82-year-old woman was injured and hospitalized, and nearby buildings were also damaged.

In Sumy, Russian forces attacked a residential area, injuring two people. Rescuers quickly assessed the situation and, fearing further strikes, evacuated 40 people, including four children, to a nearby shelter.

 

Earlier this year, on Feb. 23, Ukraine faced its most massive Russian drone attack. Russian forces launched 267 Shahed loitering munitions, ballistic missiles, and various types of decoy drones at Ukrainian regions.

Col. Yurii Ihnat, Head of Communications for the Ukrainian Air Force Command, pointed out that the Feb. 23 attack involved the largest number of drones used in a single assault since the full-scale war began.

 

On that record day, Ukrainian air defense units successfully destroyed 138 of the 267 drones, while 119 drones vanished from radar. Three veered toward Russia, and one headed for Belarus.

The Russian bombardment targeted regions including Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Poltava, Kyiv, and Zaporizhzhia.

IDF drone strike in north Lebanon kills Hezbollah weapons operative, says military

An IDF drone strike yesterday in northern Lebanon’s Hermel District killed a Hezbollah operative involved in procuring weapons for the terror group amid the ongoing ceasefire, the military said, APA reports citing Times of Israel.

According to the IDF, Mohammed Mahdi Ali Shaheen was “coordinating terrorist transactions for the purchase of weapons on the Syria-Lebanon border, since the understandings between Israel and Lebanon came into effect.”

 

Shaheen is described by the IDF as a prominent member of Hezbollah’s regional division in the Beqaa Valley area, involved in smuggling weapons from Syria to Lebanon.

As part of his role, Shaheen was responsible for making procurement deals with smugglers and suppliers, mediating the arrival of shipments, and distributing them to various Hezbollah units, the military says.

 

The IDF says his actions “posed a threat to Israel and its citizens, and constitutes a blatant violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon.”

On Wednesday, a separate IDF drone strike in northeastern Lebanon killed Mahran Ali Nasser al-Din, a prominent member of Hezbollah’s Unit 4400, which is responsible for smuggling weapons into Lebanon.

Underwater explorer finds mysterious object under the Baltic Sea

More than a decade after finding an unusual object at the bottom of the Baltic Sea that some call an underwater UFO, explorer Dennis Asberg is still waiting for answers.

Since the Ocean X Team founder’s initial discovery in 2011, theories have been flying about what the object could be.

 

“I have thought about that 10 years now, more than that. What can it be, really?” Asberg told NewsNation Special Correspondent Ross Coulthart this week.

That’s the question Coulthart digs into during this week’s episode of “Reality Check.”

 

“It’s a 60-meter diameter round thing that looks like it’s separated from the bottom. You have this track on the bottom also, like 1,500 meters.

You have these angles. You have these holes,” he said. “And see lots of strange things. It’s like bone material, something has bone on it. It has been upheated.”

 

While not much is known about the object, various theories of its origin have been offered.

Those range from remains from the lost city of Atlantis or a crash-landed UFO to more practical theories such as built-up rock sediment.

 

During their expedition, Asberg tells NewsNation he noted strange occurrences with their equipment when they were investigating the object.

“The first time we were out there, we noticed that we had problems with our equipment.

The ROV did not work properly. And I remember when Stephen [Asberg’s teammate] was coming up and explained for me about taking samples,” Asberg said.

“He [Stephen] said also, ‘Dennis, you know, this is something strange because usually we have four to five Celsius plus down there.’ But now Dennis was zero. I have never experienced that before.”

 

One thing is certain: The discovery has led to more questions than answers.

“I think about it every day since that day. It fascinates me,” Asberg said.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has been asked to leave the White House earlywithout signing an agreement granting the US rights to the country’s natural resources or holding the planned joint press conference.

The meeting between Zelensky and US President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vancequickly devolved into an openly hostile confrontation during which the US head of stateaccused Zelensky of ungratefulness and unwillingness to negotiate an end to the Ukraine conflict.

 

The idea of a deal involving Ukraine’s rare-earths was initially floated by Zelensky last autumn, and the US president took him up on the offer earlier this month. There had been some back-and-forth over the past few weeks, as the Ukrainian leader attempted to secure more favorable terms. It was expected that the two leaders would sign a version of the accord on Friday.

 

Despite the fact that the Ukrainian government reviewed and greenlighted the agreement on Wednesday, the deal has apparently been left in limbo after the fiery exchange at the White House on Friday.

Ukraine says it has uncovered major arms corruption

Ukraine's security service says it has uncovered corruption in an arms purchase by the military worth about $40m (£31m).

 

The SBU said five senior people in the defence ministry and at an arms supplier were being investigated.

 

It said the defence officials signed a contract for 100,000 mortar shells in August 2022.

 

Payment was made in advance, with some funds transferred abroad, but no arms were ever provided.

 

Corruption has been a major stumbling block in Ukraine's bid to join the European Union.

 

The SBU said an investigation had "exposed" officials of the ministry of defence and managers of arms supplier Lviv Arsenal, "who stole nearly 1.5 billion hryvnias in the purchase of shells".

 

"According to the investigation, former and current high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Defence and heads of affiliated companies are involved in the embezzlement," it said.

 

The SBU said that despite the contract for the shells having being agreed six months after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, "not a single artillery shell" was ever sent.

 

One of the suspects was detained while attempting to leave Ukraine and is currently in custody, the SBU said.

 

Ukraine's prosecutor general says the stolen funds have been seized and will be returned to the defence budget.

 

Ukraine's hopes of rebuilding rely on fighting corruption

 

Issues surrounding corruption have dogged Ukraine for years.

 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cited the fight against corruption as one of his main priorities when he came to power in 2019.

 

The latest allegations come as Republicans in the United States push back on President Joe Biden's efforts to send more aid to Ukraine.

 

In August, President Zelensky fired all the officials in charge of military recruitment to end a system in which some people were being allowed to escape conscription.

 

Ukraine was ranked 116th out of 180 countries in a 2022 corruption perceptions index by campaigning and research organisation Transparency International.

 

But anti-corruption efforts are beginning to make a difference. It is one of only 10 countries steadily climbing Transparency International's ranking, rising 28 places in a decade.

Drone incursions target ‘Plant 42,’ said to be the birthplace to top secret tech

In August 2024, alarming drone encounters were documented for seven nights above a highly secretive desert facility, according to new reports.

While mysterious drone incursions have made headlines in recent months, documents are now coming to light highlighting disturbing incidents around restricted airspace, including a desert facility known as “Plant 42,” said to be the birthplace of top-secret technology.

 

The facility, located in Palmdale, CA, is an aerospace brain trust with distinct ties to Area 51 in Nevada.

Most notably, it uses JANET, the nickname of the hush-hush airline that shuttles workers from Las Vegas to Area 51 or to Area 52 near Tonopah.

Plant 42 is described as a Mojave Desert enclave of brilliant engineers and aerospace brainiacs working on projects for NASA, the US Air Force, and the CIA.

 

Plant 42 is the birthplace of many amazing machines, including the soon-to-be-unveiled B-21 Raider and the next generation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

All the big names are present at Plant 42. From Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works to Northrop Grumman to McDonnell Douglas, the cutting-edge technologies deemed vital to national security come through the facility.

 

According to reports, for seven straight nights in August, drones of unknown origin equipped with cameras invaded, buzzed, and hovered over the plant before vanishing into the dark.

London journalist Chris Sharp has been digging into the incursions.

 

“The documentation basically suggests that this was some kind of surveillance and espionage activity,” Sharp said.

“They do state that the capabilities of these drones exhibited — they were beyond hobbyist drones.”

 

Sharp and a colleague used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain official reports from the US Air Force about the Palmdale drone encounters.

The first public hint that something odd was in the skies over Palmdale came from residents who reported seeing UFOs.

They shared images on X. Social media trolls also posted videos, which were later determined to be from a drone exhibition in Hawaii, not the Palmdale incidents.

 

Months later, the military acknowledged to the defense publication “The War Zone” that mystery drones had penetrated Plant 42 multiple times in August.

Still, the whole thing was downplayed until Sharp and his cohorts obtained the FOIA records.

 

The documents show that drones, which the reports call “UxS,” meaning unmanned systems, were of different shapes and sizes and with various colored lights.

The first incursion was on Aug. 2 over site four, one of ten within the plant. The report said the drones showed “coordinated arrival departure and flight path times.”

 

Flight line operations were suspended during the incident, and the drones stuck around for hours. Security personnel pursued them for miles off base when they departed over Palmdale but lost them.

The next night, five drones returned and visited four different sites within the plant. One drone hovered over site seven for 25 minutes.

Similar incursions happened every night from Aug. 2 – 7, and even though some drones were visible for hours, officials from Plant 42 said they were never able to get a single photo or video of any of them.

 

“You’ve got these things appearing over multiple nights, and no one thought to take a photo,” Sharp said. “That makes me question the documentation itself in terms of providing a full picture of what really occurred.”

In 2022, folks inside the Plant 42 complex three years ago, a spokesperson for Plant 42 told a reporter the entire facility was protected against drone incursions by high-tech geo-fence systems that presumably could deter, at a minimum, typical hobbyist-type drones.

However, whatever was guarding Plant 42 in August did not work.

A few months after the Palmdale drone swarms, American air bases in the UK experienced night after night of repeated drone incursions.

The US threw everything they had at the intruding drones, but according to Sharp’s reporting, couldn’t bring them down or track when they left.

The same thing occurred a year earlier at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia. The overflights seem to be meant to surveil sensitive military sites.

TD Barnes, a former CIA electronics specialist who spent most of his career at Area 51, suspects that the drones are American, citing the incursions’ focus on key US allies in Britain, Germany, and Denmark. He admits, however, that the Pentagon will likely never admit it.

 

Chris Sharp thinks a revelation of US involvement would raise substantial questions.

“If it’s Americans testing stuff on our overall sensitive facilities, then they’ve got a lot of explaining to do,” he said.

 

However, if the drone incidents are an espionage effort by foreign adversaries, it raises some questions as well.

Not the least of those questions: Does Palmdale have a nest of Chinese or Russian spies unleashing drones from their garage and then hiding them when they’re done?

Is that also what happened at Langley Air Force Base, Wright Patterson, and other key US bases? If so, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) didn’t get the memo.

The organization recently released a statement saying drone incursions are an increasing problem at bases all over the US and that they want it to stop.

 

Another option: Perhaps the incursions are security tests by the US. Indeed they have been useful if that’s the case.

They’ve demonstrated a major gap in US security systems. Experts can’t detect them coming in, can’t track them when they leave, and can’t bring them down with existing anti-drone tech.

Maybe it’s time for the people working at Plant 42 to develop new anti-drone tech to solve the problem that opened up in the skies above them.

The official continued: “Russia is fighting a two-pronged war in Ukraine: A military one but also an economic one. They’re trying to crush the economy, but USAID has played a central role in helping it be resilient, [including] shoring up the energy grid…We’ve provided vast amount of support to the Ukrainian government to avoid a macro economic crisis.”

 

In addition to ending the Ukraine Energy Security Project, USAID is also dramatically downsizing its presence in Ukraine.

 

Before the Trump administration’s latest moves, 64 American government employees and contractors were serving on the ground in Ukraine for the agency. Just eight of those personnel are slated to remain on the ground in the war-torn country after the Trump administration placed its remaining global workforce on administrative leave and ordered those workers not deemed “critical” to return to the U.S.

 

The two officials warned that USAID withdrawing from Ukraine would leave its energy grid vulnerable in the heart of the winter as it endures assaults from further Russian missiles.

 

A State Department spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Zelensky not ready for peace – Trump

The US president has accused the Ukrainian leader of “disrespecting” Washington

 

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky is not ready for peace as he sees Washington’s involvement in negotiations on the Ukraine conflict as a bargaining chip, US President Donald Trump has stated, following their meeting on Friday.

 

Trump made the remarks in a social media post after receiving Zelensky at the White house, where the two were expected to sign an agreement granting Washington access to Ukraine’s natural resources.

 

Zelensky’s visit to the White House was cut short after he got into a heated exchange with Trump and US Vice President J.D. Vance.Trump accused Zelensky of “disrespectful” behavior during the talks in the Oval Office.

 

The tense exchange culminated in an argument when Vance reminded Zelensky that the latter went to Pennsylvania in October to campaign for the Democrats, andurged him to “say a few words of gratitude to the US and the president who is trying to save your country.”

 

Zelensky responded with“Please, do you think that if you talk very loudly about the war… “

 

He wasimmediately cut off by Trump, who said in a tense voice:“he is not speaking loudly,” adding, “Your country is in big trouble. You are not winning. You have a damn good chance of coming out okay because of us.”

 

While the Ukrainian ambassador to Washington could be seen off camera with her head in her hands Zelensky countered that Ukraine was “alone” but remains “strong and grateful.”

 

Trump dismissed the claim,interrupting Zelensky, to say“You were not alone. We gave you, through this stupid president (Joe Biden), $350 billion, we gave you military equipment.”

 

As Zelensky attempted to outshout Trump, the US president pointed out that without American aid, the war would have ended in two weeks.

 

“We had a very meaningful meeting…” Trump later wrote on Truth Social, adding “Much was learned that could never be understood without conversation under such fire and pressure.”

 

Trump went on to say that Zelensky “is not ready for peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations.”

 

“It’s amazing what comes out through emotion…” the US president stated.

 

He reiterated that he wants peace, adding that Zelensky “disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office.”

 

Trump, who did not accompany Zelensky to the exit, concluded his statement by saying, “He can come back when he is ready for Peace.”

White House staffers reportedly eating the lunch initially prepared for Zelensky after President Trump kicked him out of the White House.

Steak ‘n Shake to cook fries in beef tallow: ‘Authentic way’.

 

Fast-food chain Steak ‘n Shake announced on Thursday that it will be cooking its shoestring fries in 100% beef tallow by the end of Feb. 2025.

 

“Our fries will now be cooked in an authentic way, 100% beef tallow, in order to achieve the highest quality and best taste,” Chris Ward, chief supply chain officer for Steak ‘n Shake, said in a statement.

 

In recent years, the use of “seed oils” in cooking has drawn much controversy. In October, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. lambasted their use in fast-food restaurants and called for a return to using beef tallow.

 

“Did you know that McDonald’s used to use beef tallow to make their fries from 1940 until phasing it out in favor of seed oils in 1990?” Kennedy wrote.

 

“This switch was made because saturated animal fats were thought to be unhealthy, but we have since discovered that seed oils are one of the driving causes of the obesity epidemic.”
