Chronic disease rates in America have increased dramatically, from 7.5% of the population in the 1930s to 60% today, representing a 700% surge, while obesity now affects 40% of Americans.

Four companies – Bayer, Syngenta, BASF, and Corteva – dominate the agricultural market, with Bayer controlling 18.2% of global agrochemicals and, together with Corteva, over half of US retail seed sales for major crops.

The concentration ratio (“CR4”) in US agriculture has reached extreme levels – 85% in beef packing, 70% in pork packing and 95% control of corn intellectual property by just four companies.

In 2024, pharmaceutical companies spent $294 million on lobbying, while agribusinesses spent $32.7 million, with Bayer alone spending $6.46 million in the US.

Modern industrial agriculture mimics pharmaceutical business models by creating dependency cycles. Farmers must repeatedly purchase synthetic inputs while patients require ongoing medication rather than cure-focused treatments.

CNN presenter accused of hypocrisy over book on Biden’s health

In ‘Original Sin’, Jake Tapper has alleged the former president’s cognitive decline was covered up, despite previously dismissing such claims (it’s biblical…kek)

CNN anchor Jake Tapper is facing a backlash on social media for co-authoring a soon-to-be-released book alleging the cognitive decline of former US President Joe Biden was covered up despite having previously dismissed similar claims. The book’s publisher, Penguin Press, issued a press release announcing the project on Wednesday.

Set to be released on May 20, ‘Original Sin’ is co-authored by Tapper and Axios correspondent Alex Thompson. The book examines Biden’s decision to seek re-election, describing it as his “original sin” that led to a campaign of “gaslighting and denial,” ultimately resulting in current President Donald Trump’s election victory. The authors claim to provide an inside look into private discussions revealing the extent of Biden’s decline and efforts to conceal it.

After the book’s announcement, critics blasted Tapper for hypocrisy, noting that he previously defended Biden against claims of cognitive decline.

In 2020, during an interview with Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, Tapper cut her off after she suggested Biden was in “cognitive decline,” stating, “I think you have absolutely no standing to diagnose somebody’s cognitive decline.”

Some accused CNN of being “complicit in the fraud,” while others singled out Tapper calling his book ablatant attempt at deflection.(deception)

“It’s a book written by Jake about how Jake covered up Biden’s decline so Jake could write a book. Tell me – if Biden had won would this book still be published?” one user wrote on X.

Although Tapper previously defended Biden, he became one of the most vocal critics of the president’s decision to seek reelection following the debate between Biden and Trump in June 2024, which he co-moderated.

Questions about Biden’s physical and mental fortitude plagued his campaign throughout and Republicans often claimed that the 81-year-old lacked the acuity to serve another term in office. However, it was Biden’s poor performance at a CNN-hosted debate with Trump in June that put a spotlight on the president’s diminished prowess. During the debate, Biden repeatedly lost his train of thought, mixed up words and numbers, and struggled to finish sentences.

Biden’s performance was widely criticized, including by Tapper himself. The former president ultimately dropped out of the race in July, about a hundred days before the election, and endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris to run in his place.

(That title should’ve been used for the “Russia Hoax” pushed by the press and Bigly by CNN. It’s not “hypocrisy” to Tapper and others, that was the plan all along, to get money by writing a book! But hey, at least the book not about Trump.)

In a way, Hackman grew into words. His father was a printer on the local newspaper, the Commercial-News in Danville, Illinois, while both his grandfather and uncle were reporters. So becoming a writer would seem like a natural development. Yet, a cursory glance at his voluminous CV reveals that, over the course of a career that spanned some 44 years and 80 films, not once does Hackman’s name appear as a writer. Not for the lack of trying, mind you. After all, if there’s one thing that a pre-PlayStation generation actor can do while noodling around in his trailer, waiting for his close-up, then it’s sit down at his desk and put some thoughts down on paper.

“I wrote a lot of little short pieces, almost like audition pieces, for actors,” he recalls. “My son thought he wanted to be an actor at one time and was in New York and I wrote him a couple of little monologues. I guess that’s where I started. I really enjoyed it. Ideas would just pop into my head and I would write them down.”

There’s a tremendous difference between writing for fun, or writing something that you know only a handful of people will hear or read, andwriting something that could be experienced by millions. That was Hackman’s next step – in the late ‘80s, he bought the rights to a best-selling crime novel, and set about the tricky task of adapting it himself, with a view to possibly directing and playing the standout role of a psychopathic killer who specialises in playing mindgames with the Feds from inside his prison cell. “I was so respectful of the book that I was into it 100 pages, and had about 300 pages of the script!” says Hackman, his laugh sounding exactly like it does on film; a warm and cheeky chuckle from the back of the throat. “So I could see that I didn’t have the experience to do that kind of thing at that point,so I let the project go, kinda regretfully.”

Small wonder, for the project was The Silence Of The Lambs which, in case you didn’t know, went on to gross $273 million worldwide, become an enduring classic and win Oscars for Jonathan Demme, Ted Tally and Anthony Hopkins in the categories that Hackman had earmarked for himself – directing, writing and the role of Hannibal Lecter. “At least I had a good eye for the material,” laughs Hackman who, with two Oscars on his mantelpiece already, can afford to be sanguine about the experience. “I really wasn’t very inventive about the process. I was more concerned about the description of the scene process, and it just got to be overlong. I didn’t think within the time I had on the option I had bought on the thing, that I could develop it properly.”

That lack of confidence in his writing might explain why, when Hackman finally decided to pick up a pen (he writes longhand, and his wife gets it all typed up) again, he didn’t go it alone. When he was preparing to star alongside Tom Cruise in The Firm, and needed to learn how to scuba dive, he was put in touch with Lenihan, a local marine biologist and accomplished diver. “In Santa Fe, there’s not a lot of scuba diving,” chuckles Hackman. “But Daniel took me to this public swimming pool – it had a depth of nine feet or something like that – and I got my first introduction to scuba through him.”

From there, the two got chatting about authors they liked – Melville, Hemingway, “all the traditional adventure type writers” – and tentatively decided to try writing together. “I said to him, ‘Hey, I’ve never written anything…’” says Hackman. “So I went home and I made up a scene about a young man up in the sheets in a forerigged sailing ship in a storm, and that was the start of it.”

Hunter helps fight the fire and discreetly questions the decision but is chastised by Ramsey for the appearance of discord.

Alabama receives an Emergency Action Message ordering missile launch against the Russian base. As Alabama prepares to fire, a second radio message is detected before a rebel Russian Akula-class submarine attacks, damaging the ship's radio and leaving the message incomplete.

With the last confirmed order being to launch, Ramsey decides to proceed. Hunter disagrees, believing the partial second message may be a retraction. When Hunter refuses to consent as is required, Ramsey tries to relieve him of duty. Hunter orders Ramsey arrested for attempting to circumvent two-man protocol. The Chief of the Boat sides with Hunter and has Ramsey relieved of command and confined to his stateroom, putting Hunter in charge.

The Russian submarine attacks Alabama again. Alabama emerges victorious but is damaged when a torpedo detonates next to its hull. The main propulsion system is disabled, and the bilge bay begins flooding. As the crew tries to restore propulsion, Hunter orders the sealing of the bilge with sailors trapped inside, saving Alabama at the expense of the men. Propulsion is restored before Alabama reaches hull-crush depth.

Officers and crew loyal to Ramsey unite and stage a mutiny. They retake the control room, confining Hunter, the Chief of the Boat, and some others to the officers' mess. Repairs to the radio continue, but Ramsey is determined to proceed without waiting for verification. Hunter escapes his arrest and prepares to retake the ship. He gains the support of weapons officer Peter Ince in the missile control room, further delaying the launch and leading Ramsey to go there. Hunter's party storms Alabama's command center, removing the captain's missile key. Ramsey and his men return, resulting in an armed Mexican standoff. With news that the radio will soon be repaired, Ramsey and Hunter agree to wait until the deadline for a preemptive missile launch to be effective.

Communications are eventually restored, revealing the full message from the second transmission – a retraction ordering that the missile launch be aborted because Radchenko's rebellion has been quelled. Ramsey turns the conn over to Hunter and returns to his cabin.

The two men are put before a tribunal at Naval Station Pearl Harbor to answer for their actions. The tribunal concludes that both men were right and both men were wrong, and Hunter's actions were deemed lawfully justified and in the best interests of the United States. Unofficially, the tribunal reprimands both men for failing to resolve their differences. Thanks to Ramsey's personal recommendation, the tribunal agrees to grant Hunter command of his own sub while allowing Ramsey to save face via an early retirement with full honors. Outside, Hunter meets with Ramsey to express his gratitude, and the two men part ways amicably.

Professional biography

While finishing his MA degree and teaching anthropology at Florida State University in 1973, Dan was hired as assistant project director for a shipwreck survey conducted by theUS National Park Service (NPS). There, he met Cal Cummings, who was building an NPS Cultural Resources Center inSanta Fe, New Mexico.Cal asked Dan to lead the Center’s efforts in underwater archaeology. NPS is the nation’s lead agency in Historic Preservation and houses its oldest nonmilitary diving program (1960). Cal had Dan first concentrate on reservoir areas where dam-construction agencies had flooded thousands of archaeological sites. By 1976, those agencies had contributed a million-dollars for Dan’s team of NPS diving archaeologists to revisit and evaluate flooded sites—the National Reservoir Inundation Study (NRIS).

The NRIS ended in 1980 with a 1500-page Final Report offering hard conclusions affecting all land archaeology done in US river-drainage systems. In 1980, the NPS made NRIS principals into the agency’s Submerged Cultural Resources Unit (SCRU) with Lenihan as Chief. This included all underwater archaeology in the NPS. The fine detail of the image above reminds us once again that geoscience — on Mars and on Earth — is an observational science.

If you look at the image for a few moments, you will see that there are different areas made of different textures.

You will also observe that some features appear to be more resistant to weathering than others, and as a consequence stand out from the surface or the rims of the block.

Sedimentologists will study this and many other images in fine detail and compare them to similar images we have acquired along the most recent drive path.

From that they put together a reconstruction of the environment billions of years in the past: Was it water or wind that laid down those rocks, and what happened next?

Many of the knobbly textures might be from water-rock interaction that happened after the initial deposition of the material.

We will see; the jury is out on what these details tell us, and we are looking closely at all those beautiful images and then will turn to the chemistry data to understand even more about those rocks.

In the caption of the image above it says “merged” images.

This is an imaging process that happens aboard the rover — it takes two (or more) images of the same location on the same target, acquired at different focus positions, and merges them so a wider range of the rock is in focus.

This is especially valuable on textures that have a high relief, such as the above shown example. The rover is quite clever, isn’t it?

In today’s plan MAHLI does not have such an elaborate task, but instead it is documenting the rock that the APXS instrument is measuring.

The team decided that it is time for APXS to measure the regular bedrock again, because we are driving out of an area that is darker on the orbital image and into a lighter area.

If you want, you can follow our progress on that orbital image. (But I am sure many of the regular readers of this blog know that!)

That bedrock target was named “Trippet Ranch.” ChemCam investigates the target “San Ysidro Trail,” which is a grayish-looking vein.

As someone interested in water-rock interactions for my research, I always love plans that have the surrounding rock (the APXS target in this case) and the alteration features in the same location.

This allows us to tease out which of the chemical components of the rock might have moved upon contact with water, and which ones have not.

As we are driving through very interesting terrain, with walls exposed on the mesas — especially Gould mesa — and lots of textures in the blocks around us, there are many Mastcam mosaics in today’s plan!

The mosaics on “Lytle Creek,” “Round Valley,” “Heaton Flat,” “Los Liones,” and the single image on “Mount Pinos” all document this variety of structures, and another mosaic looks right at our workspace.

It did not get a nice name as it is part of a series with a more descriptive name all called “trough.” We often do this to keep things together in logical order when it comes to imaging series.

The long-distance RMIs in today’s plan are another example of this, as they are just called “Gould,” followed by the sol number they will be taken on — that’s 4466 — and a and b to distinguish the two from each other.

Gould Mesa, the target of both of them, exposes many different structures and textures, and looking at such walls — geologists call them outcrops — lets us read the rock record like a history book!

And it will get even better in the next few weeks as we are heading into a small canyon and will have walls on both sides. Lots of science to come in the next few downlinks, and lots of science on the ground already!

I’d better get back to thinking about some of the data we have received recently, while the rover is busy exploring the ever-changing geology and mineralogy on the flanks of Mount Sharp.

At approximately 8:01 p.m. EST, Intuitive Machines’ lunar lander separated from SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, powered on approximately 12 minutes later, and will continue its weeklong journey to the Moon.

Aboard the lander is NASA science and technology as part of the agency’s CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative and Artemis campaign.

Also launching as a rideshare on the mission, NASA’s Lunar Trailblazer spacecraft separated from the launch vehicle at 8:04 p.m.

EST and will also continue its journey to lunar orbit where it will map the distribution of the different forms of water on the Moon.

Athena is expected to land on the lunar surface on Thursday, March 6. Among their second lunar delivery, the IM-2 mission will be one of the first on site, or in-situ, demonstrations of resource detection on the Moon.

A drill and mass spectrometer will measure the potential presence of volatiles or gases from lunar soil in Mons Mouton, a lunar plateau near the Moon’s South Pole.

In addition, a passive Laser Retroreflector Array on the top deck of the lander will bounce laser light back at any orbiting or incoming spacecraft to give future spacecraft a permanent reference point on the lunar surface.

Other technology instruments on this delivery will demonstrate a robust surface communications system and deploy a propulsive drone that can hop across the lunar surface.

'This court disagrees': Judge strongly rejects 'absurd' effort by Fani Willis to avoid subpoenas for documents and testimony about Trump RICO prosecution

A court in Georgiashot down a request by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to quash subpoenas issued by state legislatorsintent on quizzing the prosecutor about her and her office’s efforts to investigate and prosecute President Donald Trump.

Peach State Sen. Bill Cowsert, a Republican who represents the college town of Athens, is the chair of the Senate Special Committee on Investigations.That committee has been looking into Willis for years. Since the summer of 2024, Cowsert has beenintent on getting Willis to talk under oathabout her long-frustrated Trump crusade.

Willis has resisted those efforts at every turn.Now, a court has rejected the prosecutor’s latest argument by finding it would set an “absurd” precedent for investigations conducted by state legislators going forward. And, in a twofold blow, the judge cast doubt on efforts by Willis to limit the scope of the subpoenas.

The focus of the committee’s investigation is how Willis spent public funds on her failed racketeering (RICO) and election interference investigation into the 45th and 47th president — and whether any funds earmarked for other purposes were improperly diverted.

A subpoena was issued by the Georgia state Senate in August 2024; but appeared superfluous at first. The prosecutor was slated to appear and speak under oath at a public hearing held by the committee that September — but ultimately she was a no-show.

Around the same time, Cowsert moved to enforce years-old subpoenas against Willis for documents and testimony — as well as the latest subpoena.In turn, Willis and her office filed for a permanent injunction to stop the subpoenas from being enforced.

In early December 2024, attorneys for the parties argued the general issues in the case as well as for and against the possibility of Willis being held in contempt. On Dec. 23, 2024, the Fulton CountyDistrict Court judgeoverseeing the matter thenruled in the committee’s favor on the basic question of the subpoena power—denying the district attorney’s petition for declaratory judgment and injunctive relief.

In January, the embattled district attorney filed a new motion relying on a wholly separate argument. Willis argued the 2024 subpoenas were moot and should be quashed or dismissed entirely because the November 2024 general election necessarily resulted in a brand new General Assembly being sworn in.

The state senators, for their part, quickly made sure to reauthorize Cowsert’s committee. But, Willis essayed, the details of how that reauthorization occurred precluded the subpoenas from having any real staying power because, technically, the present committee is a different committee than the one that issued the original subpoenas.

In a 2-page order, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Shukura L. Ingram rejected that argument out of hand, noting, “this Court disagrees.”

The judge said she was sympathetic to Willis’ arguments that the original subpoenas were issued near the end of the last legislative term — and that compliance is perhaps better achieved if subpoenas are issued by legislators early on.Still, the judge cautioned, “there are myriad ways to tie these disputes up in court.”

“If, every time a subpoena is issued by a Special Committee, a recipient can simply litigate its validity and enforcement until the General Assembly reconstitutes and then they have to start over, this would be an absurd result indeed,” the judge opined. “Not least because this would mean that if the need for a subpoena did not arise well towards the beginning of a term, the General Assembly would be forced to defer issuing said subpoena until the beginning of the next term in order to maximize their window of opportunity to enforce it. This could and would result in lost evidence, fading memories, and general inefficiency.”

NASA Remembers Long-Time Civil Servant John Boyd

John Boyd, known to many as Jack and whose career spanned more than seven decades in a multitude of roles across NASA as well as its predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), died Feb. 20.

He was 99. Born in 1925, and raised in Danville, Virginia, he was a long-time resident of Saratoga, California.

Boyd is being remembered by many across the agency, including Dr. Eugene Tu, director, NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley, where Boyd spent most of his career.

“Jack brought an energy, optimism, and team-based approach to solving some of the greatest technological challenges humanity has ever faced, which remains part of our culture to this day,” said Tu.

“There are few careers as wide-ranging and impactful as Jack’s.”

In 1947, Boyd began his career at the then-called Ames Aeronautical Laboratory in Moffett Field, California, as an aeronautical engineer working to design and test various wing shapes using the center’s 1-by-3-foot supersonic wind tunnel.

Boyd continued conducting research in wind tunnels, testing designs that led to dramatic increases in the efficiency of the supersonic B-58 bomber, as well as the F-102 and F-106 fighters.

In 1958, just before Ames became part of a newly established NASA, Boyd recalled thinking, “Maybe someday we’ll go out into the far blue yonder, and if we do, what are we going to fly?

How are we going to bring it back into the atmosphere safely?”

He and a team of engineers turned their attention to studying the dynamics of high-speed projectiles in hypervelocity ranges, filled with different mixtures of gases to mimic the atmospheres of Mars and Venus, in preparation for sending spacecraft out into space and safely back again or to the surface of other worlds.

By the mid-60s, Boyd was promoted into leadership and tapped to become deputy director for Aeronautics and Flight Systems at NASA Ames.

In the late 1960s, as America was redefining its space exploration goals and sending humans to the Moon, Boyd served as the center’s lead to assist NASA Headquarters in Washington consolidate and create new research programs.

In 1979, Boyd served as the deputy director at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center (now known as NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center) in Edwards, California, and prepared the center for its role as a landing site for the space shuttle.

He briefly returned to Ames before heading to NASA Headquarters to be associate administrator for management under James M. Beggs.

Boyd left government service in 1985, taking a position as chancellor for research and an adjunct professor of aerodynamics, engineering, and the history of spaceflight for the University of Texas System.

Boyd returned to NASA and California’s Silicon Valley in 1993,inspiring students through educational outreach initiatives, and serving as the senior advisor to the director, senior advisor for history, and the center ombudsman until his retirement in 2020.

Boyd credits his interest in airplanes to a cousin who was a paratrooper and gave him a ride in a biplane in the 1940s.

In 1943, he enrolled and became the first in his family to earn a degree with a bachelor of science in aeronautical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia.

He was a recipient of the NASA Exceptional Service Award, the NASA Outstanding Leadership Award, the NASA Equal Employment Opportunity Medal, the Presidential Rank of Meritorious Executive, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the Army Command Medal, and the NASA Headquarters History Award.

He also was a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a Sloan Fellow at Stanford University.

“The agency and the nation thank and honor Jack as a member of the NASA family and the highest exemplar of a public servant who believed investing in others is the greatest contribution one can make,” added Tu.

“He will be deeply missed.”

In the end, however,the court was not persuaded by any of the timeline considerationsoffered by the district attorney.

“Moreover, suppose the production of documents were ongoing during the transition from one term to the other — would everyone simply have to start over?” the court’s order goes on. “This Court cannot in good conscience facilitate such a result. As such, Petitioner’s Motion is DENIED.”

Notably, while entertaining the concerns raised by Willis,the court said the district attorney was also wrong on the law about subpoenas.

“[T]his Court agrees with [the GOP]that the authority cited does not stand for the proposition that the original subpoenas must be declared void because the General Assembly and Special Committee have been reconstituted post-election,” the order goes on.

In another 2-page order, Ingram warned Willis that her efforts to evade certain — elucidated — requests in the subpoenas are lacking.

“Petitioner timely filed her elaborated objections; however, they are still deficient,” the court observed.

Willis claimsthe attorney-client privilege to three requests lodged by the state senators. The judge suggests those claims are off-base.

“Here, who is the attorney? Who is the client?” Ingram asked. Moreover, the communication must have been made for the purpose of getting or giving legal advice. How does that apply here? These are questions that Petitioner needs to answer, or else abandon her objection to these requests on the basis of attorney-client privilege.”

Willis also claims the work-product privilege — a form of privilege closely-related to the attorney-client privilege based on work done specifically in regards to litigation or a trial — in response to those same three requests.

Again, the judge suggests this privilege does not apply. The judge prods by noting the questions have to do with Willis’ hiring of, and personal relationship with, former special prosecutor Nathan Wade.

Finally,Ingram strongly suggests Willis is improperly claiming the law enforcement privilege to one requestand all-but counsels the district attorney to abandon the current exemption in favor of “another law enforcement privilege and/or law enforcement material assertion.”

NASA, SpaceX Update the Launch of Space Telescope and Sun Missions

February 26, 2025

NASA and SpaceX now are targeting no earlier than Sunday, March 2, for the launch of the agency’s SPHEREx and PUNCH missions.

The new date will allow additional time for teams to perform rocket processing ahead of liftoff.

The launch time is targeted for 10:09 p.m. EST (7:09 p.m. PST) from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

The SPHEREx mission (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer) will improve our understanding of what happened in the first second after the big bang and search for key ingredients for life in our galaxy.

The PUNCH mission (Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere) will observe the Sun’s corona as it transitions into the solar wind.

The prelaunch news briefing now is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, with coverage streaming live on NASA+.

Media may ask questions in person and via phone. Limited auditorium space will be available for in-person participation.

For the dial-in number and passcode, media should contact the Kennedy newsroom no later than one hour before the start of the event at ksc-newsroom@mail.nasa.gov.
