JUST IN: President Trump Files Emergency Appeal Asking Supreme Court to Intervene After Biden Judge Orders Admin to Pay $2 Billion in Foreign Contracts by Midnight

The Trump Administration on Wednesday evening filed an emergency appeal asking the Supreme Court to intervene after a Biden-appointed judge ordered the Admin to pay $2 billion in foreign contracts by midnight tonight.

The DC Circuit Court of Appeals has not yet ruled on Trump’s emergency request for an administrative stay so the DOJ went right to the high court as the midnight deadline looms.

In the BONY case, Lucy Edwards has thus far named two Russian banks which she said were involved in money laundering–the Depositarno-Kliringovy Bank (DKB) and Flamingo Bank–whom, she said, she helped set up branches in the United States without obtaining licenses from the Federal Reserve Bank. An official of the Depositarno-Kliringovy Bank has denied Edwards’ accusations (Moscow Times, February 17-18, 22; ORT, February 19). According to some Russian media, another bank, MDM, was involved in the BONY money laundering scheme. One of MDM’s top officials is Aleksandr Mamut, who is reportedly close to two other Kremlin insiders–the tycoon Boris Berezovsky and Sibneft chief Roman Abramovich (Versiya, February 22). Russia & US Holding Next Talks In Turkey, Without Europe: Lavrov

Last week's Riyadh talks between the United States and Russia have led to another round of face-to-face bilateral negotiations, set for Thursday in Istanbul.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed the meeting while alongside the emir of Qatar in Doha. The oil and gas rick Gulf country remains a close ally of Turkey.

The Istanbul meeting is expected to focus on restoring diplomatic staff and full relations at each respective embassy. Both sides went through several rounds of expelling the other's diplomats under the Biden administration, as relations hit a low-point during the Ukraine war, also amid US/EU-led sanctions on Moscow.

"Such a meeting will take place tomorrow in Istanbul. I think that its results will show how quickly and effectively we can move forward," Lavrov said Wednesday.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has also confirmed it is hosting the high-level talks. "As we have repeatedly stated, Turkiye is ready to provide all kinds of support to peace efforts, including hosting future talks," a spokesperson said.

The Feb.18 meeting in Riyadh focused on kickstarting direct talks related to preparing for peace negotiations to settle the Ukraine war, but importantly this took place with either Ukrainian or European representation.

The meeting in Istanbul will make it clear "how fast and efficiently the sides can move forward," Lavrov was cited in Russia's TASS as saying.

Lavrov in a press conference was asked about reports that the West could permanently seize nearly $300 billion in Russian assets held abroad. "As for our assets, which have been stolen primarily by Europeans, no, you know, there has been no talk about it. But I have no doubts that this issue will not disappear as part of the settlement," Lavrov responded.

Deputy among 18 indicted in Los Angeles County jail drug smuggling operation

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy is among the 18 people indicted by a grand jury this week in a “sophisticated” drug smuggling operation within the County jail system.

Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the unsealing of the grand jury indictment Tuesday evening, adding that it targets a network of criminals who collaborated with associates of the Mexican Mafia prison gang.

Half of those indicted are currently in jail, while the other half were free citizens, Hochman said, including LASD Deputy Michael Meiser.

Meiser was arrested for his alleged role last May, according to the Los Angeles Times. He worked at the North County Correctional Facility in Castaic as an investigator with the jail’s anti-gang unit.

The yearslong investigation was launched in February 2022 after multiple reports of narcotics entering the jail system, as well as a violent inmate assault that took place around that time.

BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. - A Chico mother was arrested for allegedly bringing drugs into Butte County Juvenile Hall during a visit to her son.

Sabrina Rivera, 46, of Chico, was arrested on an arrest warrant issued by District Attorney investigators from the Butte Interagency Narcotics Task Force (BINTF). Rivera was booked into the Butte County Jail, later posting a $15,000 bail. She is scheduled to appear in Butte County Superior Court on April 18, 2025.

Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey shared that the investigation began after authorities at Juvenile Hall received information indicating three juvenile inmates, including Rivera’s son, were under the influence of drugs following a family visit on January 31, 2025. During the visit, Rivera allegedly handed over benzodiazepine pills, commonly known as "benzos" or "downers," to her son.

Surveillance footage from Juvenile Hall showed what appeared to be a discreet exchange of a small packet between Rivera and her son while they sat at a visitation table playing a board game. This prompted an immediate investigation by Juvenile Hall staff, which was later taken over by the Butte County District Attorney’s Office and the BINTF.

Upon receiving a request from Chief Probation Officer Melissa Romero, the joint investigation led to Rivera’s arrest. Romero added that this rare event has prompted tighter security protocols within Juvenile Hall to prevent similar incidents in the future.
