A new wave of news about bankruptcies in Roman Catholic dioceses of California is sweeping the Internet these days. According to Religion News Service, the new wave involves more than 3,000 cases.

It is not that new cases are emerging at the rate they were back at the height of the clergy sexual abuse crisis, in the aughts. In California, the new wave of bankruptcies in the Catholic Church are the by-product of a major change in the understanding of the reasons behind sexual abuse.

«In 2018, the California Legislature approved AB 218, a bill that lifted the statute of limitations for three years on child sex abuse litigation and allowed survivors to file suits regardless of when the abuse occurred. That three-year “window” for filing cases that otherwise would have been barred closed on December 31, 2022».

AB 2018 is the California Assembly Bill 218, a law also known as The Child Victims Act, approved back in in October 2019. Until 2022, the law allowed people who was sexually assaulted as a minor to file civil lawsuits although the statute of limitations had already expired.

China's 'Shock' Statement: Palestinians Have Right To Use 'Armed Force' Against Israel

China has backed the right of the Palestinian people to use armed force to combat Israel's occupation of their land, calling it an "an inalienable right well founded in international law".

The comments on Thursday were made by the Chinese ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, during the fourth day of public hearings held by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.

Representatives of 52 countries are addressing the ICJ on Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land.

Beijing’s envoy said there were "various people (who) freed themselves from colonial rule" and they could use "all available means, including armed struggle".

He described the Palestinian use of armed resistance as legitimate and not an act of terrorism.

"The struggle waged by peoples for their liberation, right to self-determination, including armed struggle against colonialism, occupation, aggression, domination against foreign forces should not be considered terror acts," Zhang Jun told the court.

In his speech, Jun criticized Israeli policies, characterizing them as “oppression that has severely undermined and impeded the exercises and full realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination".

The ICJ’s public hearings, which will be held until February 26, come after a UN General Assembly resolution requesting an ICJ advisory opinion.

The number of states participating in the oral proceedings is the highest of any case since the ICJ's establishment in 1945 and is separate to the more publicized genocide case brought by South Africa. A panel of 15 judges are expected to take about six months to deliberate before issuing an advisory opinion.

Besides China, other countries scheduled to participate in the hearings include Hungary, France, South Africa and Egypt.

International bodies, including the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union will also take part. Israel will not participate but has sent written observations to the court.

Bondi spoke in support of Trump at the 2020 Republican National Convention.[61][62] While ballots were being counted in the 2020 United States presidential election, Bondi supported Trump's claims that there was large-scale voter fraud in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.[63][64]

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Monday that two JAG officers (judge advocates general) were fired, as they served as "roadblocks" to President Donald Trump's agenda, The Hill reported.

"It's not about roadblocks to an agenda," Hegseth told reporters. "It's roadblocks to orders that are given by a commander in chief."

The JAG officers, whose roles involved advising military leaders on legal matters, were dismissed as part of a broader shake-up at the Pentagon that has also included the removal of Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. CQ Brown Jr. Hegseth emphasized that the firings were necessary to ensure that legal counsel within the military aligns with the administration's directives.

"Ultimately, I want the best possible lawyers in each service to provide the best possible recommendations, no matter what, to lawful orders that are given," Hegseth said. "And we didn't think those particular positions were well-suited, and so we're looking for the best."

The move has sparked criticism, with some legal experts warning that the dismissal of senior military legal officers could signal a shift in how military law is interpreted under the Trump administration. Georgetown Law professor Rosa Brooks posted to X that such firings are "even more chilling than firing the four stars."

"It's what you do when you're planning to break the law: You get rid of any lawyers who might try to slow you down," Brooks wrote.

Hegseth dismissed those concerns in an interview with "Fox News Sunday," calling them "hyperbole."

"We want lawyers who give sound constitutional advice and don't exist to attempt to be roadblocks," he said, adding that the current system of selecting JAG officers perpetuates the status quo.

China has backed the right of the Palestinian people to use armed force to combat Israel's occupation of their land, calling it an "an inalienable right well founded in international law".

The comments on Thursday were made by the Chinese ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, during the fourth day of public hearings held by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.

Representatives of 52 countries are addressing the ICJ on Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land.

Beijing’s envoy said there were "various people (who) freed themselves from colonial rule" and they could use "all available means, including armed struggle".

He described the Palestinian use of armed resistance as legitimate and not an act of terrorism.

"The struggle waged by peoples for their liberation, right to self-determination, including armed struggle against colonialism, occupation, aggression, domination against foreign forces should not be considered terror acts," Zhang Jun told the court.

In his speech, Jun criticized Israeli policies, characterizing them as “oppression that has severely undermined and impeded the exercises and full realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination".

The ICJ’s public hearings, which will be held until February 26, come after a UN General Assembly resolution requesting an ICJ advisory opinion.

The number of states participating in the oral proceedings is the highest of any case since the ICJ's establishment in 1945 and is separate to the more publicized genocide case brought by South Africa. A panel of 15 judges are expected to take about six months to deliberate before issuing an advisory opinion.

Besides China, other countries scheduled to participate in the hearings include Hungary, France, South Africa and Egypt.

International bodies, including the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union will also take part. Israel will not participate but has sent written observations to the court.

According to a Harvard CAPS (Center for American Political Studies)/Harris poll released Monday, Trump maintains a 52 percent approval rating after his first month in office, including high marks for nearly all of his policies, while Democrats have plummeted to an all-time low approval rating of only 36 percent.

A total of 2,443 registered voters completed the survey online Wednesday and Thursday.

Democrats are facing new charges of election fraud going back to 2021, despite their party pushing back on election integrity and voter fraud claims since the 2020 presidential election.

While Democrats have long criticized Republicans who are concerned about election integrity by smearing them with the pejorative label “election deniers,” new allegations regarding election fraud are being made against Democrats. Five Democratic Party members in Bridgeport, Conn., and Philadelphia have been criminally charged with numerous counts of voter fraud on both the state and federal levels regarding mail-in ballots.

Bridgeport had to redo primary and general elections last year after evidence surfaced of alleged ballot harvesting in the Democratic mayoral primary in September 2023.
