Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 147,000 in June, and the unemployment rate

changed little at 4.1 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Job gains

occurred in state government and health care. Federal government continued to lose jobs.

 

This news release presents statistics from two monthly surveys. The household survey measures

The GOP House Intelligence Committee Chairman is critiquing the Trump CIA director's review of the Intelligence Community's assessment on Russian meddling in the 2016 election. And the CIA is pushing back.

 

The Republican chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence has sent a letter directly to President Donald Trump telling him that CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s recent memo – which offered some critiques of the U.S. intelligence community’s assessment of Russian meddling in the 2016 election – was a “whitewash” that “protects the deep state,” Just the News learned Thursday.

 

Ratcliffe on Wednesday morning released a “lessons learned” review of the December 2016 Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA) on Russian influence in the November 2016 election, including critiquing the “high confidence” assessment by the FBI and the CIA that Russian leader Vladimir Putin had “aspired” to help Trump win the race against Democratic presidential nominee former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

 

But the CIA’s review – put together by the CIA's Directorate of Analysis (DA) at Ratcliffe’s direction – also stated that the review’s findings “should not be interpreted as indicative of broader systemic problems in the IC's analytic processes or standards.”

 

Rep. Rick Crawford, chairman of the House Intelligence panel, took his concerns with the review’s conclusions directly to Trump in a letter Wednesday evening that contained rare but stark criticisms of the Republican CIA director by the Republican intelligence panel chairman.

 

“While I am pleased to see CIA take the first step of acknowledging the political abuse and tradecraft problems associated with the 2016 ICA, I am disappointed that the Agency was permitted to whitewash the full extent of their problems,” Crawford wrote to Trump, adding that “I write to report to you that this review fails to disclose critical information, offers misleading judgements, and protects the deep state.”

 

Crawford sent a copy of his letter to Ratcliffe, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and Secretary of State and National Security Adviser Marco Rubio.

 

A spokesperson for the CIA told Just the News that Ratcliffe had exposed "the gross political bias behind the 2016 Election ICA" and that he would continue to push for transparency and accountability.

 

CIA’s “self-review … falls short of the full truth”

Ratcliffe’s review criticized then-CIA Director John Brennan for allegedly joining since-fired FBI Director James Comey in pushing to include British ex-spy Christopher Steele’s baseless anti-Trump dossier in the ICA and concluded that “the decision by agency heads to include the Steele Dossier in the ICA ran counter to fundamental tradecraft principles and ultimately undermined the credibility of a key judgment.”

 

“The procedural anomalies that characterized the ICA’s development had a direct impact on the tradecraft applied to its most contentious finding. With analysts operating under severe time constraints, limited information sharing, and heightened senior-level scrutiny, several aspects of tradecraft rigor were compromised—particularly in supporting the judgment that Putin ‘aspired’ to help Trump win,” the lessons learned report from the CIA found.

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

 

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. Huawei To Stand Trial In US On Charges Of Bank Fraud, Sanctions Violations, Theft

 

Chinese company Huawei Technologies will stand trial on multiple charges after a federal judge denied its bid to dismiss a long-running case against it.

 

On July 1, District Judge Ann Donnelly of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York ruled that there was sufficient evidence to proceed with a 16-count indictment against Huawei and its subsidiaries.

 

Huawei, which is closely tied to the Chinese communist regime, stands accused of racketeering, stealing trade secrets from six U.S. companies, and committing bank fraud.

 

With Donnelly’s ruling, the case will move forward toward trial. Currently, the proceedings are scheduled to begin on May 4, 2026.

 

Huawei stands charged with using a Hong Kong-based front company, Skycom, to conduct business in Iran in violation of U.S. sanctions and with misleading banks in order to facilitate more than $100 million in illegal money transfers.

 

Additionally, the indictment alleges that Huawei engaged in racketeering to expand its global brand.

 

Representatives of Huawei did not respond to a request for comment from The Epoch Times by publication time.

 

In November 2024, Huawei pleaded not guilty and called itself “a prosecutorial target in search of a crime.”

 

The upcoming trial is expected to last several months and could have significant implications for the ongoing tensions between the United States and China over technology, trade, and national security.
