According to the magazine, Israel now finds itself more dependent on the United States than ever, yet its foundation of support is eroding in ways that could change the rules of the game. By drawing on polling data, testimonies, and political analysis, the Economist paints a comprehensive picture of a widening rift: across parties, generations, and communities, with the potential to reshape U.S. foreign policy toward Israel.

The publication frames its coverage not only as journalism but also as a warning: unless Israel changes course—both diplomatically and in the court of public opinion—it risks isolation, dependent but without a true backer on the global stage.

'How Israel is losing America'

In its cover story, “How Israel is losing America,” the magazine notes that while Netanyahu poses with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and declares the alliance as “solid as the Western Wall,” the numbers tell a different story. Polls show 53% of Americans now hold a negative opinion of Israel, with sympathy for Israel versus the Palestinians at a 25-year low. Forty-three percent of respondents believe Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

The steepest drop is among older Democrats, where negative views have surged 23 percentage points in just three years. Support has also slipped among young Republicans—from 63% in 2022 to nearly an even split today. A history of warning covers

This is not the first time the Economist has placed Israel on its cover. In March 2024, after more than five months of fighting in Gaza, the magazine depicted a lone Israeli flag in the desert, barely clinging to a thin branch, under the headline “Israel alone.” The image accompanied rising Biden administration criticism and Canada’s decision to halt arms sales to Israel.

A year later, after Israel’s military successes against Hezbollah and Iran in Operations Northern Arrows and Days of Retribution, and airstrikes against Yemen’s Houthis, the March 2025 cover reversed the imagery. It showed a field full of strong Israeli flags over a settlement backdrop, under the caption “Israel’s hubris.”

The magazine drew criticism for what some saw as contrasting portrayals: under Biden, a vulnerable Israel adrift; under Trump, a strong but arrogant Israel portrayed as blinded by its own power.

Two years ago, actor Tom Hanks visited a typewriter shop in Oregon and promised to send the owner a signed typewriter from his own collection. Now, Hanks finally delivered.

Antony Vallopi opened the typewriter shop four years ago and saw success right away.

"Two weeks after I opened, Willamette Week put us in their top 100 best businesses of Portland issue," Antony Vallopi, the owner of Type Space, told KGW.

On the shelf are about 25 or so typewriters to buy, with another 150 being refurbished or fixed, with every piece having written a story.

"It makes my writing more intentional because I don't have cut and paste, delete. I really have to think about what I'm putting down," Vallopi said.

Vallopi's shop attracts all sorts of customers—from collectors, first-time users, young, old, and even those from Hollywood.

In 2023, actor Tom Hanks was in Portland for a book tour, and he stopped by.

"We just talked about typewriters, not much about his movies or things like that," Vallopi said.

Hanks, a typewriter aficionado, stayed about an hour, bought one of the typewriters for his own use, and left.

"On the way out, he said, 'Hey, hey, I'm gonna send you an autographed typewriter out of my collection,'" Vallopi said.

Two years later, after sending Tom's manager a message on another matter, he says they realized they had forgotten as well.

Hanks had sent him a 1955 Rheinmetall typewriter from Germany.

One from Hanks' personal collection, signed by him, as promised.

It's a piece of memorabilia, and a piece of analog history.

"People can come down and type on it. That's great, it's not hands off," Vallopi said.

The real question is- why is the FBI lying?

Donald Trump has backed Tony Blair’s plan to end the war in Gaza.

The US president has given the former British prime minister two weeks to garner support for his proposal.

The project by the Tony Blair Institute (TBI) proposes establishing a temporary body to rule Gaza, with no displacement of civilians, and a multinational effort to prevent the resurgence of Hamas.

Sir Tony has been working on a post-war plan – known as the “day after” – since the conflict broke out in October 2023.

The US president has suggested turning Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East” – a glitzy paradise complete with casinos and beachfront properties.

He has also spoken about moving thousands of Palestinians from the war-torn territory, but sources confirmed to The Telegraph that Sir Tony’s plan does not involve the displacement of Gazans.

His plan would see the establishment of a “Property Rights Preservation Unit”, which would aim to strengthen the rights of Gazans who voluntarily leave the territory by giving them a right to return.

If approved, it would also see the creation of a temporary body called the Gaza International Transitional Authority (GITA).

Established by the United Nations, the GITA would rule the post-war strip for several years before handing it over to the Palestinian Authority, which would be expected to undergo significant reforms beforehand.

The GITA would serve as the “supreme political and legal authority for Gaza during the transitional period”, a version of a draft proposal reads, according to The Times of Israel.

It would have at least one Palestinian representative on its board, as well as senior UN officials, leading international figures with business experience, and “strong representation of Muslim members”.

The US president backed Sir Tony’s plan during a meeting at the White House on Aug 27.

Jared Kushner, Mr Trump’s son-in-law, has been front-and-centre in the development of a post-war plan, having commissioned the TBI to work on the proposal.

Sir Tony, meanwhile, has met senior Trump officials and leaders throughout the Middle East to garner support for his plan.

The Telegraph has previously reported that he was advising Steve Witkoff, Mr Trump’s Middle East envoy.

Sir Tony played a significant role as British prime minister during the negotiations that led to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, the peace accord that ended the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Mr Trump was particularly keen for Sir Tony to secure the support of Saudi Arabia, as he views the country as crucial to the outcome of any post-war plan.

Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, wants any post-war plan to lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state, something Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, categorically rejects.

Israel has also publicly rejected the Palestinian Authority having any role in governing Gaza but has engaged “constructively” with Sir Tony’s plan, The Times of Israel reported.

Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s hard-Right finance minister, said on Wednesday that Gaza had the potential to be a real estate “bonanza” and claimed he was in talks with US officials on how to divide up the war-torn territory.

This vision for Gaza was depicted in a bizarre AI video Mr Trump shared in February.

Officials close to the former prime minister believe Israel’s recent strike targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar may have undermined Sir Tony’s work.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that Mr Trump was “frustrated” with Mr Netanyahu over the strike, which the president reportedly learned about 50 minutes in advance.

“He’s f-- me,” Mr Trump reportedly said as Mr Netanyahu opted for more military action in the Middle East, rather than a ceasefire.

Israel has also since launched a renewed ground offensive in Gaza City, sending thousands of soldiers to defeat the remaining Hamas fighters.

Sir Tony’s plan calls for the disarmament of Hamas, which is in line with the United States’s desires for the terror group.

The proposal also envisages the formation of an international force that would back Gaza’s civil police force in preventing Hamas from re-emerging as an armed group.

The TBI declined to comment.

House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on January 6 Chairman Barry Loudermilk on Thursday sent letters to Attorney General Pam Bondi and several businesses, seeking missing information that the previous January 6 committee failed to turn over.

House Republicans approved the creation of the new select subcommittee earlier this month, which House Speaker Mike Johnson chose Loudermilk to lead. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has nominated California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell to represent his party on the panel.

Loudermilk claimed in the letters that the Democratic-led January 6 select committee, which investigated the 2021 riot shortly after it occurred, failed to archive over one terabyte of digital data, including video footage and documents.

"Former January 6th Select Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson conceded that he withheld footage of witness interviews and depositions," Loudermilk wrote. "To date, Representative Thompson has failed to account for the missing footage and data."

The letters request the institutions, including the Department of Justice, the University of Virginia and Broadcast Management Group, among others, produce the same documents and information it provided to the previous select committee by Oct. 2.

“This is an important first step in unraveling the predetermined narrative the former January 6th Select Committee crafted to hurt President Donald J. Trump," Loudermilk said in a news release. "Why else would their committee delete or fail to properly archive more than a terabyte of data? I look forward to uncovering the rest of the missing data and providing the American people with a complete and accurate report on the events surrounding January 6, 2021, and the partisan investigation that followed.”

The White House opened the week by declaring war on the radical left and its dark-money NGO network in the wake of Charlie Kirk's political assassination. President Trump and senior officials are zeroing in on George Soros' Open Society Foundations (OSF) empire, which they say has sown years of chaos nationwide, with Trump even hinting at potential RICO charges.

A new report from Capital Research Center (CRC), a think tank tracking foundations, charities, and other nonprofits, has revealed OSF - now run by George's ultra-leftist, radical son, Alexander - has funneled over $80 million into groups linked to terrorism or extremist violence.

CRC investigative researcher Ryan Mauro published the bombshell report titled "Soros' Open Society gave $80 million to pro-terror groups," and this may be the breakthrough in evidence the Trump team needs to prosecute OSF under RICO.

Mauro stated in the report:

Since 2016, George Soros's Open Society Foundations (OSF), now run with his son Alexander, has poured over $80 million into groups tied to terrorism or extremist violence. The evidence is stark: Open Society has sent millions of dollars into U.S.-based organizations that engage in "direct actions" that the FBI defines as domestic terrorism. These groups include the Center for Third World Organizing and its militant partner Ruckus Society, which trained activists in property destruction and sabotage during the 2020 riots, and the Sunrise Movement, which endorsed the Antifa-linked Stop Cop City campaign, in which activists currently face over 40 domestic terrorism charges and 60 racketeering indictments. At the same time, Open Society awarded $18 million to the Movement for Black Lives, a group that co-authored a radical guide that glorifies Hamas's October 7 massacre and instructs activists in the use of false IDs, blockades, and economic disruption.

Nor is the danger confined to America's streets. Open Society has funneled more than $2.3 million into Al-Haq, a nongovernmental organization (NGO) based in the West Bank and long accused of ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), which the European Union and the United States designate as a foreign terrorist organization. Grants to Al-Haq between 2016 and 2023 ranged from $400,000 in general support to an $800,000 institutional award. In September 2025, the U.S. State Department sanctioned Al-Haq, citing its role in advancing campaigns that "directly engaged in the [International Criminal Court's] illegitimate targeting of Israel." That means Soros's foundation has not only financed extremist groups within the United States but also funneled millions abroad to entities now formally sanctioned by Washington.
