OpenAI Readies TikTok-Style App Powered Only By AI Videos

 

OpenAI is preparing a standalone social app powered by its Sora 2 video model, according to Wired. The app “closely resembles” TikTok with a vertical video feed and swipe-to-scroll, but only features AI-generated clips — users can’t upload from their camera roll.

 

Wired reported that Sora 2 will generate clips of 10 seconds or less inside the app, though limits outside the app are unclear. TikTok, which started with a 15-second cap, now allows 10-minute uploads. The app will also offer identity verification, letting Sora 2 use a person’s likeness in generated videos. Others can tag or remix that likeness, but OpenAI will notify users whenever it’s used — even if the video isn’t posted.

 

Wired adds the software will refuse some videos due to copyright, but protections may be weak. The Wall Street Journal reports rights holders must opt out to keep their content from appearing in Sora 2’s outputs.

 

OpenAI is alerting talent agencies and studios to the opt-out system, which doesn’t allow blanket exclusions across all of a creator’s work. Instead, agencies can flag violations. “Our general approach has been to treat likeness and copyright distinctly,” said Jason Kwon, OpenAI’s chief strategy officer.

 

The Journal notes OpenAI has struck deals with some studios and that its new tools echo ChatGPT’s image generator, which quickly filled the internet with Studio Ghibli-style memes. “Given the intense competition in the space, I think they think, ‘maybe we will ask for forgiveness instead of asking for permission,’” said Georgetown Law’s Kristelia García.

 

OpenAI’s move comes as Hollywood pushes for stronger consent and compensation rules, and as courts weigh whether training on copyrighted content is “fair use.” The company is also seeking approval from California and Delaware attorneys general for a corporate restructuring that could affect investor funding, the Journal reports.

 

“For so many in the AI space, this move validates longstanding fears and underscores why we need guardrails,” said Dan Neely, CEO of Vermillio.

 

By launching a social platform around Sora 2, Wired suggests OpenAI is not only chasing TikTok’s momentum but also trying to lock users into its ecosystem. Building a community around AI-only content could make switching to rival tools less appealing.

When a well-dressed couple calling themselves “A. Monroe and wife” stepped off the train in Jefferson, Texas on January 19, 1877, nobody knew they were setting in motion one of the first sensational trials in Texas history. “A. Monroe” was actually Abraham Rothschild, son of a Cincinnati jeweler, traveling salesman for his father’s business. His companion, Bessie Moore, had been born Annie Stone up in Syracuse, New York, the daughter of a prosperous shoe dealer. Her life had taken a hard turn—by her teens she’d been attached to a man named Moore and kept his name long after. Newspapers later claimed she’d worked the brothel circuit in Cincinnati, New Orleans, and Hot Springs before meeting Rothschild, but whether or not that’s true, the two traveled as man and wife though they never legally married.

 

Two days before Jefferson, they’d stayed in Marshall at the Old Capitol Hotel under their real names, Rothschild and wife. By the time they checked into the Brooks House in Jefferson, they were back to being “the Monroes.” That Sunday morning, Abe bought two picnic lunches from Henrique’s Restaurant, and the pair were seen walking into the fog over the footbridge on Big Cypress Creek. Only Abe returned. When asked about his wife, he said she was “visiting friends in the country” and would meet him Tuesday. But Tuesday came, and their hotel room was empty. Abe was gone on the eastbound train—alone, with the luggage.

 

Bad weather swept in. A week later, when the snow melted, a woman gathering firewood found the body of a finely dressed young woman under a twisted oak, with the remains of a picnic nearby. She had been shot in the head. Citizens buried her in Oakwood Cemetery under no name. It didn’t take long to connect the dots: the dead woman was Bessie Moore, and “A. Monroe” was really Abraham Rothschild. By then, Rothschild was back in Cincinnati, drinking heavily and claiming someone was after him. He tried to kill himself, failing but blinding his right eye. He was arrested in the hospital, and after a bitter fight, extradited to Texas.

 

What followed was a legal circus. Practically every lawyer in East Texas wanted in—some for the money, some for the fame. The governor even asked prominent attorneys to help the prosecution. Rothschild’s family hired some of the best defense lawyers money could buy, including future Texas governor Charles A. Culberson and U.S. senator David B. Culberson. With that much legal firepower, the case dragged on for years. The first trial in 1878 ended with Rothschild convicted of murder and sentenced to hang—jury foreman C. R. Weathersby even drew a noose on the wall to make his point. But the defense appealed, the court found the trial unfair, and a mistrial was declared.

 

A second trial finally opened in 1880. This time, the defense chipped away at the state’s case, arguing the body was too well-preserved to have been lying in the woods since Rothschild left town. A witness even claimed to have seen Bessie alive after Abe’s departure. On December 30, 1880, the jury found him not guilty.

 

Right about here in this tawdry tale is where the history and myth merge. Tales spread that bribes bought the verdict, that every juror met a violent end, that Bessie had been pregnant. Years later, in the 1890s, an old man with a patch over one eye visited Bessie’s grave, left roses, prayed, and paid for its upkeep. Some swore it was Rothschild, seeking forgiveness. A headstone mysteriously appeared in the 1930s, and in the 1960s a fence was placed around her resting place. To this day, the case is officially “unsolved.” Jefferson still keeps the story alive—since 1955, locals have staged a courtroom drama of the “Diamond Bessie” trial each spring during the Jefferson Historic Pilgrimage.

Israeli navy boards Greta Thunberg’s Gaza aid flotilla

Foreign ministry confirms that the Global Sumud Flotilla was intercepted for violating a lawful naval blockade and those on board transferred to an Israeli port

The Gaza aid flotilla said it had been intercepted and that Israeli military had boarded some of their vessels on Wednesday evening.

 

The flotilla, carrying activists including Greta Thunberg, the Swedish campaigner, had earlier been warned to change course to the port of Ashdod, north of Gaza, Israel’s foreign ministry said. Israeli officials said any aid could be transferred “through safe channels” to Gaza.

 

The ministry said the Israeli navy had informed the flotilla it was approaching an active combat zone and violating a lawful naval blockade. It said several vessels had been stopped and those onboard were being transferred to an Israeli port.

 

In a separate statement, the ministry said Thunberg and “her friends” were safe and healthy.

 

Some 20 unidentified vessels were seen approaching the flotilla earlier on, multiple people on board said, as passengers put on life vests and braced for a takeover.

 

“Our vessels are being illegally intercepted. Cameras are offline and vessels have been boarded by military personnel. We are actively working to confirm the safety and status of all participants on board,” organisers of the flotilla said in a post on X.

 

Israeli naval commandos had been expected to board some of the ships, of which there are at least 44, as the flotilla made its final approach to Gaza, flanked by Italian and Spanish naval vessels. Activists on board the flotilla said they had declared a state of emergency and that their vessels had been surrounded.

 

Hamas called Israel’s interception of Gaza flotilla as a “crime of piracy and terrorism”.

 

Italy’s foreign minister said that his Israeli counterpart had assured him the Israeli armed forces would not use violence against activists on board.

 

“The boarding was planned, we are talking about it … with Minister Saar so that there would be no violent actions on the part of the Tel Aviv armed forces, and this has been assured to me,” Antonio Tajani told Italian TV broadcaster Rai.

 

“We instructed our embassy in Tel Aviv and the consulate in Jerusalem to assist all Italians who will probably be taken to Ashdod, but then will be expelled,” he added.

 

Protests took place in Italy on Wednesday night and unions called for a general strike on Friday.

 

“The aggression against civilian ships that were carrying Italian citizens is an extremely serious matter,” the CGIL union said.

 

In one of the first international responses, Turkey accused Israel of committing an “act of terrorism” by intercepting the flotilla.

A video post on the flotilla’s Instagram page showed the silhouetted outline of what it said was an Israeli military vessel carrying out “dangerous manoeuvres” near the civilian vessels.

 

“I fear this will be the final letter that I write to you from the Global Sumud Flotilla — now just 120 NM [nautical miles] from the shores of Gaza,” David Adler, a Jewish activist on board wrote on X, vowing to continue on their journey to deliver aid to Gaza’s besieged population and raise awareness of Israel’s military campaign.

 

“Last night, several Israeli naval ships menaced our convoy. They attacked our vessels, intimidated our crew and disabled our communications. We recognise these tactics from previous flotilla missions. We know that they are the precursor to what we have long feared: illegal Israeli abduction in international waters.”

 

Italy and Greece urged the activists to compromise by handing over their aid to the Catholic Church, for it to distribute in Gaza, and to avoid a direct confrontation with Israel’s military.

 

As the flotilla carried on its journey, heavy bombardments were reported in Gaza City as Israel continued its offensive. More than two dozen people were killed in the latest strikes, according to local hospitals.

As the results of the last presidential election demonstrated, Rasmussen is typically very accurate.

 

So this is an extremely alarming development.

 

Vast numbers of our young adults are working low-paying part-time jobs right now because that is all they can get.

 

But as the employment market gets even tighter, there will even be intense competition for those jobs.

 

Day after day, large companies are slashing more high-paying positions. For example, Exxon Mobil just announced that it will be eliminating 2,000 jobs…

A spokesperson for Exxon confirmed to Barron’s on Tuesday that the company plans to cut 2,000 jobs, representing 3% to 4% of the energy company’s global workforce.

Through September 15th, big tech companies had laid off 166,000 employees so far this year.

ICE Arrests More Than 400 Illegal Immigrants In Week-Long Operation In Central Florida

 

ICE said that the operation, carried out between Sept. 22 and Sept. 26, targeted illegal immigrants with “outstanding criminal warrants” and those who are subject to deportation.

 

“Many of these individuals illegally remained in Florida and have gone on to wreak havoc in our local neighborhoods,” ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Miami Field Office Director Garrett Ripa said in a statement.

 

ICE said that all the detainees will be subject to removal proceedings in accordance with federal immigration law.

 

The operation was led by ICE Miami in coordination with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and multiple local law enforcement agencies, including the Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida National Guard, according to the agency.

 

Florida is leading nationwide in 287(g) partnerships, with 327 agreements currently in place, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The agreements allow local law enforcement agencies to carry out certain immigration duties, including identifying and processing removable illegal immigrants who face criminal charges.

 

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin praised the operation in central Florida, noting that the detainees included individuals convicted of criminal offenses such as “lewd and lascivious behavior, battery, domestic violence, prostitution, vehicle theft, hit and run, and driving under the influence.”

 

“This was another successful operation to arrest the worst of the worst with our Florida state and local partners and can serve as a blueprint nationwide,” McLaughlin said, calling on other states to follow suit.

 

The Trump administration has ramped up efforts to arrest and deport illegal immigrants across the country.
