Inside Trump’s Pressure Campaign to Derail Global Shipping Emissions Tax

Environmentalists eager to curb planet-warming pollution from shipping had grown increasingly confident that countries would adopt the first-ever global tax on emissions this year.

 

But those predicting success failed to fully account for President Donald Trump harnessing the might of the US against it.

 

On Friday, nations at a meeting of the UN’s International Maritime Organization voted to delay by one year a decision on the landmark measure that would force large vessels to curb emissions or potentially incur fees of $380 per ton.

 

The outcome was in part the culmination of a months-long campaign by US officials — including diplomats and cabinet members as well as the president himself — to fight the fee they decried as an untenable global carbon tax.

 

“President Trump saved America from the outrageous climate scam that was killing our country, and he has long warned others to abandon this destructive agenda before it is too late,” White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said by email. “Stopping this disastrous vote is a massive win for the American people and countries around the world that cannot afford to bend the knee to bogus climate demands any longer.”

 

Industry Voices Disappointment and Concern as IMO Postpones Global Shipping Carbon Tax Vote

European nations and the UK were among those who had supported the regulations in April when they received preliminary approval, but were on the losing side of Friday’s 57-49 vote in favor of postponement.

 

The US wasn’t alone in battling the initiative; nations including Saudi Arabia, Iran and Russia had voted against the planned emissions charge in April and on Friday backed the delay.

 

Trump administration officials also wielded specific threats, warning other nations they could face tariffs, visa restrictions and financial penalties if they backed the so-called net-zero framework, or NZF. Trump himself has widely used tariffs — and even just the threat of them — to compel other countries to abandon or ease policies with which he disagrees.

 

“The United States will be moving to levy these remedies against nations that sponsor this European-led neocolonial export of global climate regulations,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy vowed in an Oct. 10 statement. “We will fight hard to protect our economic interests by imposing costs on countries if they support the NZF.”

 

A suite of cabinet officials were enlisted to deliver arguments against the initiative, including Wright and Rubio as well as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, the official said. Conversations unfolded in text messages, phone calls, emails and public meetings, often tailored to anticipate and emphasize the potential concerns of other countries, the official said.

 

For instance, Trump administration officials told other nations the fees would deliver widespread economic damage — hiking costs, stoking inflation and imperiling food security — although some analysts have described a more modest financial impact.

 

They also cast doubt on plans for using the more than $10 billion in revenue the emissions charges were expected to raise annually. While the draft agreement outlined where revenue would end up — including for ships using low-emission fuels — key financial details had not been finalized, feeding US officials’ arguments it could be an “environmental slush fund.”

 

US representatives also assured countries that had some concerns with the measure that they didn’t need to go along with it. Some countries previously felt like it was a foregone conclusion, the senior State Department official said.

 

The US opposition may have provided a kind of political cover for other wavering nations — a scenario that could play out in other international climate talks.

 

Environmentalists called the administration’s approach and the delay misguided. Currently, ships are almost exclusively powered by oil-derived fuels that spew out more than a billion tons of emissions each year.

 

Also, the delay would lead to a conflicting patchwork of rules and undermines a potential economic bounty for the US, given its advantage producing lower-emission fuels, they said. Ahead of the vote, some US biofuel producers unsuccessfully lobbied the Trump administration to alter course.

The Justice Department is cleaning house as Deep State prosecutors in the Eastern District of Virginia ‘resist’ Trump and leak to the stenographers in the mainstream media.

 

Two more Deep State prosecutors in the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA) have been fired.

 

Politico reported on Friday that two federal prosecutors in the EDVA – Elizabeth Yusi and Kristin Bird – were fired.

MSNBC confirmed the firing of the two prosecutors after New York Attorney General Letitia James was indicted by a grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia.

[…] The Act expressly anticipates that it will have extra-territorial effect, stating at section 204(1) of the Act […] This does not mean that the Act extends to all use of in-scope services globally. My lived experience of Ofcom people makes me believe that this is a reflection of what they actually think they can and should be doing — I would love to be generous and suggest that this boilerplate reflects them politely throwing parliament under a bus for passing such a prima-facie dreadfully drafted and over-reaching law as the Online Safety Act… but I’m not convinced that Ofcom don’t actually believe some form of “we can do this! we are the little regulator who can bring law to the internet!” — hoping that smooth patter and soft power will provide them with outsize leverage.

 

Oh, and… having declared British jurisdictional powers to enforce against an American company in America thereby flouting American law, they then demand that American law protects them from counter-lawsuits, not to mention also claiming that 4Chan does not have jurisdiction over Ofcom:

Newly released flight manifest records from Jeffrey Epstein's private plane include legendary broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite.

The revered journalist - often dubbed 'the most trusted man in America' - appeared in documents made public on Friday by the House Oversight Committee. Also in the logs were Prince Andrew, Bill Gates, and Richard Branson.

The flight logs show the 91-year-old Cronkite boarded a flight in the depths of winter on January 12, 2007 and took a plane from Newark, New Jersey to St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands.

Cronkite was among eight passengers on board including Jeffrey Epstein who was likely hosting the group at one of his two private islands - Little St. James and Great St. James - located just off the coast of St. Thomas.

The logs were released as part of a broader package which also included a full transcript of the committee's September interview with Alex Acosta, the former US attorney who engineered Epstein's controversial 2008 plea deal.

The Democrat-led state of Illinois spent more to give free health care to illegal migrants than the total it spent on its citizens in programs for foster kids, the elderly, its roadways, and the arts — combined.

The 2025 budget, passed in June of 2024, totaled $53.1 billion in spending, inducing more than one billion dollars in new taxes.

But despite the huge rise in taxes, Gov. JB Pritzker also signed onto a total of $629 million toward taxpayer-funded health care for illegal migrants called the Health Benefits for Immigrant Adults (HBIA).

The mounting number of programs for illegal aliens comes at a cost of billions of tax dollars, according to the Illinois Policy Institute.

But expenditures for citizens are decidedly smaller, according to the Washington Examiner.

“That single expenditure was more than the $400 million the Illinois Department of Transportation was given for its Road Fund that pays for transportation-related projects in towns, cities, and counties; $55.3 million to cook and deliver meals to the elderly; $22.1 million to increase foster homes and specialized care of children; and $24.6 million to fund the Illinois Arts Council — combined,” the Examiner reported.

Chicago taxpayers could be on the hook for hundreds of millions of dollars for the costly Obama Presidential Center after new tax filings show the Obama Foundation has only deposited $1 million into its promised $470 million reserve fund.

That’s the conclusion of an in-depth report by Fox News as it looked at what it described as a “sweetheart deal” to create the reserve fund “to spare taxpayers should the project ever go belly up.”

The center will serve as Obama’s presidential library.

According to the report:

Under its agreement with the city, the [Obama] foundation was required to create the fund, known as an endowment, to take control of a sprawling 19.3-acre section of Jackson Park — often described as Chicago’s Central Park equivalent — where the complex is now slowly rising.

…

But when former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama turned the sod at the site in September 2021, just $1 million — or 0.21% of the pledged funds — had been deposited into the endowment, and that figure has remained unchanged ever since.

An endowment is typically a large sum of of money meant to earn enough interest each year to cover operating costs without touching the principle in order to avoid needing funding from other sources.

Also according to Fox News’s report, the “use agreement” hands over “exclusive control” of the land to the Obama Foundation “for nearly a century in exchange for $10.”

As Breitbart News has reported, construction on the Obamas’ presidential library has been painfully slow, with the project’s cost rising from an original estimate of $330 million to at least $850 million.

The poor funding of the promised endowment has fueled fears the Obama Presidential Center could leave taxpayers holding the proverbial bag if finances spiral into the red, Fox reported.

Concern has been generated by the Obama Foundation’s latest tax return, “which shows its finances under strain with revenue swinging wildly year to year, fundraising shortfalls and unfulfilled donor pledges,” according to Fox.

Illinois GOP Chair Kathy Salvi hammered the project as an “abomination” while blasting Democrats for potentially exposing taxpayers with the deal.

“It should come as no surprise that the Obama Center is potentially leaving Illinois taxpayers high and dry — it’s an Illinois Democrat tradition,” Salvi told Fox News Digital in a statement. “Democrats in this state, when not going to prison for corruption, treat taxpayers like a personal piggy bank giving sweetheart deals to their political benefactors.”

Richard Epstein, a University of Chicago law professor emeritus and a New York University law professor, advised the local nonprofit Protect Our Parks with former legal challenges to the Obama Center’s construction.

He said that “the city never should have signed over the large section” of the park.

“They put a million dollars into a $400 million endowment, so it’s endowed. That gets you in jail as a securities matter,” Epstein told Fox Digital. “An endowment means that you have the money in hand. But they have nothing. … So, I regard this as something of a public calamity.”

The Japan Air Self-Defense Force announced today that the 301st Tactical Fighter Squadron has officially moved to Misawa Air Base, adopting the F-35A as its new aircraft. The 301st is now the second official JASDF F-35A squadron, alongside the 302nd Tactical Fighter Squadron.

 

A ceremony was held at Misawa Air Base to commemorate the change of platform and base. Present at the ceremony were two F-35As already painted with the 301st’s tail markings. The frog’s scarf has been updated as well, going to three stars to match the squadron’s new parent unit, the 3rd Air Wing.

 

The 301st’s adoption of the F-35A marks the official retirement of the F-4EJ Kai from JASDF frontline service, with a send-off ceremony held last month. The retirement comes after a second livestream of an F-4EJ Kai training sortie on December 9, featuring Phantom 436. While not broadcast during the livestream, Phantom 436 received a water cannon salute after landing following the sortie, as has become tradition for the final flights of JASDF Phantoms.

 

Before that, 436 and 315 were present at the Ibaraki Airport Mini Festival on December 5. The Mini Festival commemorated the tenth anniversary of the opening of the airport, which uses the runway facilities of Hyakuri Air Base. The two commemorative Phantoms were parked on the apron of the airport, drawing the attention of planespotters once again. Additionally, the JASDF opened a booth in the airport terminal, showing off photos of base activities and answering visitor inquiries.

 

The 301st’s transition to the F-35A now leaves the Air Development and Test Wing as the sole operator of the F-4EJ. The ADTW has now applied a new retro commemorative livery to F-4EJ 301, giving it an appearance similar to how it looked when it first joined the ADTW. “Phantom Forever” is written in white across its sides, while “Thank You 1971-2021” is present on its belly, one last tribute to the JASDF Phantoms’ popularity with planespotters across Japan and the world.

I don't fear women. Wasn't concerned about some chick "bleeding me dry" for cash back then either. I'm a little off-center myself in ways, so women could say the same about my quirks. But that's also why I've stayed single for 14 years, not even kissing a woman in that time, it just felt like I couldn't provide for them, not with what I make per month anyway, thus I concluded I wasn't worth anything to a woman, not from a relationship standpoint anyway.

Houthis raid UN compound in Sanaa and detain staff

Yemen's Houthi rebels stormed the United Nations compound in the capital Sanaa and detained staff on Saturday, an agency official told The National, in the latest attack against humanitarian workers in the country.

 

“We can confirm that there has been an unauthorised entry by the security members of Ansar Allah [the Houthis] into the UN compound in Sanaa, which currently accommodates 15 UN international staff members,” Jean Alam, spokesman for the UN Resident Co-ordinator for Yemen, told The National.

 

All the staff in the compound are safe and accounted for and have contacted their families, he said.

 

Mr Alam said the UN “is taking all necessary measures and is in contact with the relevant authorities and counterparts to ensure the safety and security of all personnel and property”.

 

The incident is the latest in a long-running Houthi crackdown against the UN and other international organisations working in rebel-held areas in Yemen.

 

They have detained dozens of UN employees, as well as people associated with aid groups, civil society and the now-closed US embassy in Sanaa.

 

The UN suspended operations in the Houthi stronghold of Saada, in northern Yemen, after the rebels detained eight of its employees in January.

 

On Friday, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he was concerned about accusations made by the Houthis against UN personnel.

 

The Houthis accused the UN of spying for the US and Israel, displaying political bias and failing to condemn Israel's military actions.

 

Mr Guterres said the statements are “dangerous and unacceptable”.

 

His spokesman Stephane Dujarric said: “The Secretary General is gravely concerned by the continued public accusations made by the Houthis, including on October 16 by their leadership, against United Nations personnel in Yemen. He categorically rejects all such accusations.”

 

Mr Guterres said the statements “seriously jeopardise the safety of UN personnel and humanitarian workers and undermine life-saving operations”.
