The small cracks of dissent emerging in Trump's GOP

As President Trump basks in his success in the Middle East, hairline fractures within his Republican base are cropping up on a smattering of domestic issues.

Why it matters: Republicans have been in near-lockstep with Trump in his second term. So the small pockets of resistance — on the National Guard deployments, free speech, the federal shutdown and more — signal concerns within the GOP as the 2026 midterms come into sight.

A sample of Republicans who've been pushing back:

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia: Once one of Trump's most loyal and outspoken supporters on Capitol Hill, Greene (along with Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie) has been vocal in calling on the White House to release the Epstein files. And Greene has seemed to echo Democrats in chiding GOP congressional leaders over the shutdown.

"I'm carving my own lane," Greene posted on X last week, adding that she was "absolutely disgusted" that health insurance costs for millions of Americans would soar if the GOP-led Congress doesn't extend the tax credits Democrats are demanding to end the shutdown.

2.Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt:He told The New York Times that he disagreed with Trump's decision to send Texas National Guard troops to Illinois as part of the president's crackdown on crime. Stitt, like scores of Democrats, called it a violation of "states' rights."

"Oklahomans would lose their mind" if Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) "sent troops down to Oklahoma during the Biden administration," Stitt said.

3.Utah Gov. Spencer Cox:He took to X over the weekend to express his unhappiness about the Trump administration canceling North America's largest solar power project, saying, "This is how we lose the AI/energy arms race to China."

4.Vivek Ramaswamy:The former GOP presidential candidate, now running for Ohio governor, made clear he disagreed with the administration's pressuring of ABC that led to the brief suspension of late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel, a frequent Trump critic.

5.Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas:He compared FCC Chair Brendan Carr's implied threats to broadcasters such as ABC to mafia tactics, calling them "dangerous as hell." (Cruz still thinks he can be the President)

Cruz said he plans to introduce a bill to make it easier for people to sue the government for censorship.

6.Sen. Susan Collins of Maine:The senator, who's up for reelection next year, criticized White House budget director Russ Vought last week over his decision to permanently lay off thousands of federal workers during the shutdown.

"Regardless of whether federal employees have been working without pay or have been furloughed, their work is incredibly important to serving the public," Collins said.

The other side:The criticisms have drawn the attention of MAGA supporters, including pro-Trump activist Laura Loomer.

"So what's happening? Well, ingrate Republicans who attached themselves to Trump think they don't need him anymore or they are retaliating because he didn't endorse them," Loomer wrote in a Friday morning post on X.

What's next:Trump has been underwater in recent voter surveys — just 40% in a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.

GOP strategists say Trump could get a polling bump from his historic peace accord in the Middle East, which could tamp down some critiques from within the party.

But "if you're a Republican member in a district that's even remotely competitive, you have to have areas where you can show some distance" from Trump, said former Pennsylvania Rep. Charlie Dent, a Republican.

What they're saying:White House spokesperson Kush Desai dismissed the idea that the president is facing pushback within the GOP, saying it was "more united than ever under President Trump's leadership."

"President Trump and congressional Republicans are working in lockstep to implement the agenda the American people voted for last November," Desai added.

All of these people are losers, so they are pouncing 1-1/2 and 3-1/4 years before the next election.

An asylum seeker from Sudan danced and laughed after murdering a Walsall hotel worker in a "vicious and frenzied attack" on a British train station platform, having followed her there.

Prosecutors allege Deng Majek, who claims to be 19, stabbed 27-year-old Rhiannon Whyte 23 times with a screwdriver (penetrating her skull 11 times, the death blow damaging her brain stem) at Bescot Stadium railway station on 20 October 2024. She died in hospital three days later.

Opening the case for the prosecution at Wolverhampton Crown Court, Michelle Heeley KC told the jury that the defendant was "clearly excited about what he had done".

Mr Majek denies murder (CCTV, her blood on his clothes, his DNA under her nails - all say otherwise).

The defendant had been living at the hotel, which houses asylum seekers, while Ms Whyte had worked there for about three months.

The court heard her job included cleaning and serving food and co-workers could not recall any issue which might have led to the attack.

"There had been an issue about some broken biscuits with some of the residents but nothing serious," Ms Heeley said.

The prosecution said CCTV showed the defendant staring at Ms Whyte, before he followed her from the hotel to the railway station when she finished her shift at 23:00 BST.

"He had been hanging around waiting for her to leave and waited until she was on her own before he followed her," Ms Heeley said.

"… he was seen on CCTV cameras closing the gap on her…"

Ms Heeley said: "It was then [when she reached the train platform] that the prosecution say that this defendant attacked her."

The companies at the center of the artificial intelligence boom are investing billions of dollars in each other — and analysts say that the increasing entanglement is adding to risk of an AI bubble.

Nvidia (NVDA) in late September said it would invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI (OPAI.PVT) as part of a partnership for the ChatGPT maker to use Nvidia’s chips to train and run its next generation of models.

This is just one of a flurry of deals among a tight web of Big Tech players that have been made public in the last few months. There's also Nvidia's $6.3 billion deal with AI data center firm CoreWeave (CRWV), a customer of the chipmaker in which it holds a 7% equity stake. There's Nvidia's reported $2 billion investment linked to its customer xAI (XAAI.PVT). Then there's OpenAI's own deals with Oracle (ORCL), CoreWeave (CRWV), and chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). And on Monday, the ChatGPT maker tapped Broadcom (AVGO) to build its first in-house AI processors.

Wall Street analysts say the agreements highlight a growing trend: AI infrastructure providers, led by Nvidia, are investing in their customers, who then turn around and buy more of the infrastructure providers’ products. In other cases, customers of infrastructure like OpenAI are investing in their suppliers.

Analysts interviewed by Yahoo Finance said there are two major concerns with the circular dynamic seen in the recent spree of AI investments. For one, the nature of the transactions could make it seem like there’s greater demand for AI than there really is. It also drives a closer link among the valuations of Big Tech companies — especially given that their respective stocks have soared on news of such deals — and intertwine their fates so that a hit to any one company would be bad news for the entire ecosystem, the experts said.

“The latest developments are very troubling,” said tech analyst and Bokeh Capital Partners chief investment officer Kim Forrest. “Vendors [of AI infrastructure] have gotten a lot of money, so they're just shoving money back into their customers that may be poorly spent.”

Multiple airports refuse to play Kristi Noem video that blames Democrats for government shutdown

Several major US airports - including Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International, Portland International, Seattle-Tacoma International, Charlotte Douglas International Airport and three in New York - are refusing to play a video of Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem in which she blames Democrats for the federal government shutdown.

The dispute highlights the remarkable push by the Department of Homeland Security to insert a political message into the airport security experience that virtually every air traveler must go through.

The video, released last week and first obtained by Fox News, is intended to play at security lines, with Noem stating, “It is TSA’s top priority to make sure that you have the most pleasant and efficient airport experience as possible while we keep you safe.”

She also says, “However, Democrats in Congress refuse to fund the federal government, and because of this, many of our operations are impacted, and most of our TSA employees are working without pay.”

Airport officials have cited a variety of reasons for refusing to play the video, from its “political content” to a potential violation of federal law.

In an email to CNN, a spokesperson for the Port of Portland, which operates Portland International Airport, Hillsboro Airport and Troutdale Airport, confirmed a request came from the Transportation Security Administration to display the video message.

“We did not consent to playing the video in its current form, as we believe the Hatch Act clearly prohibits use of public assets for political purposes and messaging,” said Molly Prescott, spokesperson for the Port of Portland.

The Hatch Act is a 1939 law which prohibits political activities of federal employees to ensure government programs are administered in a nonpartisan fashion.

Prescott added Oregon law states no public employee can promote or oppose any political committee, party or affiliation.

TSA checkpoints often include videos featuring government officials welcoming travelers and explanations of procedures, but they usually do not contain political messages.

A Port of Seattle spokesperson also told CNN Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, will not play the video “due to the political nature of the content.”

“We continue to urge bipartisan efforts to end the government shutdown and are working to find ways to support federal employees working without pay at SEA during the shutdown,” the spokesperson said.

A spokesperson for Charlotte Douglas International Airport told CNN the video was not permitted under North Carolina municipal law and the airport’s policies, adding that “TSA does not own any monitors at the airport’s checkpoints.”

In Westchester County, just north of New York City, the airport will not display the video either.

“The PSA politicizes the impacts of a federal government shutdown on TSA Operations, and the County finds the tone to be unnecessarily alarmist,” County Executive Ken Jenkins said in a statement. “It is inappropriate, unacceptable, and inconsistent with the values we expect from our nation’s top public officials.”

A spokesperson for the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, which operates Niagara Falls International Airport and Buffalo Niagara International Airport — both about 400 miles from New York City — told CNN the decision was based on NFTA’s “long-standing policy” banning “partisan messaging in its facilities.”

“Therefore, we are not airing this video on airport-controlled screens,” the spokesperson said.

A spokesperson for Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas told CNN in a statement it “declined” to display the video because of its “political messaging that did not align with the neutral, informational nature of the public service announcements typically shown at the security checkpoints.”

And in Phoenix, Sky Harbor International Airport declined to play the video, saying airport policy does not permit political content.

In a statement to CNN Tuesday morning, the Department of Homeland Security reiterated much of the language from the video, including blaming the shut down on Democrats.

“Our security operations remain largely unimpacted at this time. It’s unfortunate our workforce has been put in this position due to political gamesmanship,” the statement said. “Our hope is that Democrats will soon recognize the importance of opening the government.”

the JPL Center Director sent this message to all JPL employees earlier today. Full memo below.

Colleagues,

For the past few months, I have communicated openly about our need to create a streamlined infrastructure that enables us to operate more efficiently, make decisions more quietly, and remain competitive in our rapidly changing environment.

We continue to take thoughtful but necessary steps now to shape the Lab for the future.

As part of this organizational realignment, we are taking steps to restructure and establish an appropriate size to ensure future success.

I’m sharing the difficult new: that JPL will be condueting a workforce action tomorrow, Oct, 14, resulting in a layoff of approximately 550 colleagues, or 11% of our workforce.

This reduction is part of a reorganization that began in July and not related to the current government shutdown. Unless otherwise notified, all personnel are required to work remotely tomorrow.

Following the workforce action, those continuing with JPL will be notified of their role in the new Lab structure, which will become effective Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Please watch this short video from me (see here) with a message about these changes and the path ahead. Within the same link, you will find more information, Including resources and frequently asked questions.

At 8:30 a.m. tomorrow, we will host a short, virtual Lab-wide meeting to share what to expect related to the layoff. A calendar invitation will be sent later today,

I recognize this is a tremendous amount of change in a short period of time and will be challenging for our entire community in the coming weeks.

While not easy, I believe taking these actions now will help the Lab transform at the scale and pace necessary to help achieve humanity’s boldest ambitions in space.

Russia’s ally says it’s ready for ‘big deal’ with US

Any agreement with Donald Trump must take Belarus’ interests into account, President Alexander Lukashenko has said

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has announced that he is ready to secure a “big deal” with the US.

In a meeting with senior officials in Minsk on Tuesday, he said that after recent contacts with President Donald Trump’s envoys, Belarus is willing to meet certain “global proposals” from the US.

“But our interests must also be taken into account. And everything must be fair,” he stressed.

The US has moved to reopen diplomatic relations with Belarus for purely “pragmatic purposes,” the president said.

Our policy on resuming relations with the United States must also be built exclusively on Belarusian interests.

Lukashenko added that according to Belarusian national airline Belavia, despite an earlier agreement to loosen restrictions US “sanctions have not yet been fully lifted,”and the carrier still faces certain restrictions on destinations and repairs.

The Trump administration moved to thaw relations with Belarus and lift Biden-era sanctions on Belavia last month as part of a deal that freed 52 prisoners from the country.

Washington imposed the restrictions in 2023, after accusing Lukashenko of election fraud and “complicity” in the Ukraine conflict.

US sanctions on Belarus have been in place since 2021, when Washington accused Lukashenko of election fraud committed in the 2020 presidential election.

Protests swept the country in the wake of the vote, which Minsk has said was orchestrated by the US, Western European nations and Ukraine.

Newsmax Obtains Dashcam Video Contradicting Alec Baldwin's Car Crash Story

Newsmax has obtained exclusive dashcam footage that appears to contradict Alec Baldwin's account of how he and his brother Stephen Baldwin were involved in a car crash Monday afternoon.

The 1-minute, 29-second front-facing video, taken from the commercial truck Alec Baldwin claims cut him off, shows the truck making a legal right turn onto Montauk Highway in East Hampton, New York, before Alec Baldwin's white Range Rover comes into view — and moments later, slams into a tree along the roadside.

The footage begins with the truck exiting a parking lot and making a routine right turn.

Roughly 30 seconds in, Alec Baldwin's vehicle appears to attempt to pass the truck on the right, before veering onto the shoulder and striking a large tree head-on.

The video then captures the aftermath, including the Range Rover's crumpled front end.

In a video posted to Instagram late Monday, Alec Baldwin claimed a "garbage truck the size of a whale" cut him off, forcing him to swerve to avoid a collision.

"To avoid hitting him, I hit a tree. I hit a big fat tree and crushed my car — my wife's car," he said.

But the dashcam footage obtained by Newsmax tells a different story.

The truck Alec Baldwin blamed for "cutting him off" does not appear to impede his path.

Instead, the footage shows Alec Baldwin's vehicle attempting to maneuver around the truck after it had already completed its turn.

There is no visible indication that the truck forced Alec Baldwin from his lane, nor any sudden obstruction requiring evasive action. Seconds later, his SUV loses control and crashes into the tree.

The East Hampton Police Department has not indicated any ongoing investigation beyond standard accident procedures, and no citations have been issued.

"I crushed my wife's car. I feel bad about that. But it's all fine, and I'm fine, and my brother's fine," the "Rust" actor said.

The 67-year-old actor said Stephen Baldwin, 59, was in the passenger seat.

Alec Baldwin said he was shaken but grateful that both escaped unharmed.

He added, "The car's pretty smashed up, but that's OK."

He also thanked emergency responders from the East Hampton Police Department, particularly Officer Gerken, who he described as "a lovely guy."

"Thank you to the East Hampton Police Department, the town police department, for coming to my aid," Alec Baldwin said. "As nice as can be, as pleasant as can be about the whole thing."

Alec Baldwin went on to say he planned to leave New York shortly after the crash.

"I'm going to LA to see my family, can't wait," he told followers.

"Going out to California to gather my family together, spend a few days out there and then come home."

Stephen Baldwin's representative confirmed that both brothers were doing well after the crash and expressed appreciation for the concern shown by fans.

"Stephen is doing fine and is grateful no one was injured," the representative said in a statement to Us Weekly.

"He's relieved that this was just an accident with no serious injuries," the statement continued, "and both brothers are taking time to rest."

The crash occurred shortly after the Baldwin brothers attended the Hamptons International Film Festival, where they promoted their podcast, "One Bad Movie."

Beijing vows to ‘fight to the end’ in trade war with US

Donald Trump has threatened to impose extra 100% tariffs on all Chinese goods

China has said it is prepared to “fight to the end” in the ongoing trade war with the US, reaffirming Beijing’s uncompromising stance toward tariff threats from Washington.

US President Donald Trump announced plans to place additional 100% tariffs on all Chinese imports starting November 1, in response to Beijing’s imposition of export controls on rare earth minerals used in the weapons industry. The US president also signaled tighter export controls on critical software used in defense and high-tech industries.

Chinese exports to the US currently face tariffs of 30% under a 90-day trade truce that ends in November, while Beijing imposes a 10% duty on American goods.

Speaking on Monday, a spokesperson for the Chinese Commerce Ministry said: “On the issue of tariffs and the trade war, China’s position has always been consistent. If they want to fight, we’ll fight to the end; if they want to talk, the door is open.”

Trump’s threat of extra tariffs was voiced shortly after Beijing introduced export restrictions on rare earth elements and magnets, which are crucial in military production.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce defended the move, calling it a “legitimate measure to improve the national export control system” that is aimed at “safeguarding national and international security.” The ministry had previously criticized US tariffs as a clear example of “double standards.”

The latest escalation comes ahead of a planned meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea, which kicks off on October 31. While issuing his tariff threat last week, Trump suggested that the meeting may not take place.

Venus, our neighbor, has long teased astronomers by being the brightest planet in our night sky. That curiosity about what hides behind its twinkle prompted NASA scientists to send the Pioneer Venus Large Probe diving through the planet’s atmosphere in 1978.

Apart from snooping on the planet’s composition, the probe also set out to answer a far bigger question: are we alone in our solar system, or could life exist beyond our planet?

En route to the planet’s surface, the probe sampled the atmosphere at different altitudes. It analyzed aerosol and cloud particles, gathering data on temperature, pressure, and cloud chemistry.

The mission’s data led scientists to our existing belief that Venus’s clouds were dominated by concentrated sulfuric acid and held only traces of water.

Half a century later, Earth’s twin is revealing new secrets. A second look at the Pioneer Venus data, tucked away on microfilm in the NASA Space Science Data Coordinated Archive, involved Cal Poly Pomona, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Arizona State University, and NASA itself.

Reexamining this old data showed that the atmosphere was approximately 62% water trapped in hydrated compounds.

The water bound within these hydrated minerals reveals a hidden reservoir in the planet’s clouds that scientists have overlooked until now.

Chemistry finds water on Venus

Aboard NASA’s Pioneer Venus probe were two crucial scientific instruments: the Large Probe Neutral Mass Spectrometer and Large Probe Gas Chromatograph.

The sole mission of the duo was to measure the composition of Venus’s atmosphere as the probe descended in 1978.

As the Venus probe plunged deeper into the hot atmosphere, the mass spectrometer detected H₂O⁺, SO₂⁺, O₂⁺, and FeO⁺.

The original scientists interpreted this as direct measurements of atmospheric gas composition at each altitude.

They concluded the aerosols were concentrated sulfuric acid solution (≥75% by mass) with relatively minor water (≤25% by mass).

Beyond this dominant sulfuric acid-water mixture, they proposed several minor species, including ferric chloride and/or ferric sulfates, condensed sulfur, and tentative traces of bulk iron and phosphorus.

Unfortunately, as the probe plunged through the planet’s thick clouds, tiny aerosol particles clogged the instrument’s inlet. Decades later, researchers turned what seemed like a mishap into a lucky break.

Accidentally finding water on Venus

The trapped aerosols broke down under the extreme heat encountered by the probe as it descended deeper into Venus’s atmosphere.

Temperatures rose from about −30°C at an altitude of 65 km to around 462°C at the surface. During this process, the spectrometer recorded readings not just from around Venus but also from the chemical breakdown of the cloud material itself.

During their reanalysis, the team realized that the Venus probe had unintentionally performed a thermal and evolved gas analysis.

This is the same type of analysis that Mars rovers conduct to analyze soil samples on the Red Planet.

So, instead of treating the data as direct atmospheric measurements, the new study treated the chemistry data as measurements of aerosols decomposing due to heat.

Not your average water

The water in Venus’s clouds isn’t in a liquid or vapor state familiar to us. It is mostly solid, not the icy kind, but as chemically bound hydrates.

It is mainly locked within the crystalline structure of hydrated iron sulfates, hydrated magnesium sulfates, and other hydrated mineral species.

Analysis of the Pioneer Venus data showed that the original altitude measurements were actually temperature-dependent breakdown profiles of aerosol material clogging the instrument.

The researchers plotted the released gases during the descent against the rising temperature to create a thermal decomposition profile.

The most significant water release peaked at about 414°C, which was unusually high for liquid or vapor. The profile, however, matched the breakdown profile of thermally stable hydrated compounds.

The study also indicates an aerosol solution phase, suggesting that some water dissolves in sulfuric acid within the aerosols.

Even so, the dominant form remains water-bearing compounds that release water only when heated to decomposition temperatures.

The finding challenges the long-standing belief that Venus is almost completely dry.

New chemistry explains anomalies

The original mission data contained puzzling anomalies that scientists couldn’t explain: sudden pressure surges, strange chemical spikes, and unusually high levels of water and sulfur dioxide below the cloud deck.

The team at the time wrote them off as contamination from Earth.

The new study showed that these anomalies weren’t errors at all. The evidence showed aerosol particles breaking down inside the instruments, revealing their actual chemical makeup.

This reevaluation led researchers to identify aerosols’ composition as 62% water, 22% sulfuric acid, and 16% ferric sulfate.

The researchers suggest that the iron detected in Venus’s cloud aerosols could originate from cosmic sources.

The lead author, R. Mogul, told CPP NEWS that this newly identified aerosol composition will require scientists to reassess their models of cloud chemistry and rethink whether the planet could support life.

Supreme Court Won’t Review the Outlandish $1.4 BILLION Judgment Against Alex Jones

On Tuesday, the United States Supreme Court rejected Alex Jones’ appeal of $1.4 billion Sandy Hook judgment.

Alex Jones owed families who lost their children that day $1.4 billion for claiming the massacre was a hoax.

Regardless of his remarks how is $1.4 billion a reasonable punishment for speaking your opinion?

A Connecticut court in 2022 ordered Alex to pay this massive judgement after a far left just found that Jones had greatly harmed them.

In April of last year, Infowars host and founder Alex Jones joined Steve Bannon on The War Room the day after undercover video revealed a CIA-FBI operative explaining how the FBI used their powers to bankrupt Alex and Infowars.

Alex Jones told Steve Bannon that President Trump needs to “fire their ass” and clean house at the deep state when he comes into office in 2025.

Families of those killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting asked a judge to liquidate Alex Jones’ media company, including Infowars, immediately after the legendary talk show host announced the federal government is orchestrating a forceful takeover of his broadcasting studios.

Jones previously asked the judge to provide time to reorganize his business as the Sandy Hook families demanded the collection of $1.5 billion they were awarded in their outlandish verdicts against him.

Alex Jones now will lose everything for his remarks on the Sandy Hook mass killing.

It appears that our first Amendment rights have been decimated by SCOTUS.

NASA Lets YouTuber Steve Mould Test His "Weird Chain Theory" In Space

NASA astronaut Don Pettit has helped YouTuber Steve Mould with the final step in his "weird chain theory": testing the idea in space.

In 2013, YouTuber and science communicator Steve Mould brought the "chain fountain", an unsolved problem in physics, to the attention of the wider public.

The effect, sometimes referred to as the "Mould effect" for his work on it, is strange to see. Simply put, place a long chain in a container, pull one end out, and let it fall to the floor.

Now watch as the whole chain seems to jump up out of the glass, before falling towards the floor.

The effect, though independently found by Mould, was known about before, even if it was unexplained.

Since the effect was popularized by Mould, he, Mehdi Sadaghdar of YouTube channel ElectroBOOM, and several academic studies have attempted to explain it.

Mould has also set the record for the biggest chain fountain.

"Motivated by the fact that the chain has a maximum local curvature, and the fact that the phenomenon does not happen with a chain that does not have this maximum bending curvature, the chain was modelled as a sequence of freely joined rods," a 2016 paper on the topic explains.

"When a rod is pulled from one end, the end attached to the part of the chain that is already moving, the rod tends to rotate around its center of mass; consequently, the other end will go down, towards the surface of beads, kicking the pile of beads.

Finally, there is a reaction force to this kick that pushes the beads upwards."

Mould's explanation (see above for the full explanation, and an awesome chain fountain) is generally thought to be correct, after a long (and friendly) argument and experiments against ElectroBOOM (and further analysis by others).

"In short, the chain rises above the pot in a fountain because of an extra upward force coming from the pot," Mould explains in his latest video, partly shot in space.

"How strong does that force need to be, though? Well, it needs to be able to overcome the weight of this arc of chain that would obviously fall under gravity. And that's it. That's all you need."

Unfortunately, in order to test his idea, Mould needed gravity to disappear. This is where NASA astronaut Don Pettit came in. Pettit, who had been intrigued by Mould's videos, offered to test the behavior of chains on the International Space Station (ISS).

"According to the maths, that yanking of the chain has no influence on the ark at all. If gravity wasn't a factor, the ark would be fixed there in space even though it was being yanked downwards at one end. Or at least that's the theory," Mould explained.

"That's what we want to test. We want to test the theory that a chain moving at constant speed will flow through its own shape so long as it isn't acted on by an external force like gravity."

In a phone call with Mould, Pettit attempted to tug on the chain and test whether the chain truly did flow through its own shape, supporting Mould's idea, or whether it did something else.

Unfortunately, it's pretty difficult to get a chain to remain stationary in microgravity, with Pettit describing them as moving around like molecules. Mould suggested that instead they put a chain into a loop, and stretch it out to make a rectangular shape.

Then Pettit could grab the longer sides of the rectangle-ish chain and set them in motion, pushing the top one right and the bottom left, for example. If he was correct, the chain should flow through that rectangle shape, rather than spread out into a circle as you might expect.

The setup was not ideal, and the two were limited by the ISS passing out of reach of communication satellites.

However, before the informal experiment ended, they did appear to set chains in motion that followed their own shape, seemingly adding evidence to Mould's explanation for the effect.

"It was a great demonstration seeing it pass through the same path through the loop and your explanation about why it would eventually turn into a full circle due to friction was pretty adequate," Sadaghdar said, adding that he wouldn't have to embarrass himself by making another debunk video.

"Although you didn't quite demonstrate if the path will remain the same if the chain wasn't in a loop. Another simulation might be nice, but what would be better is to take 100m of chain into space and drag it behind you in a spacewalk. Do it."
