Ex cali-anon: can't sauce this, but this was the story I was given growing up. Gum trees brought to CA as intended timber bc so fast growing. Prob is they have a natural helical twist to trunk that grows one way in their natural S. Hemisphere, but the opposite in the North. The opposite twist combined with the original chirality (stereochemistry) of the chemical building blocks in the tree mean that the wood doesn't have the tensile strength necessary for timber.
