Cartel of the Suns: created by the CIA, weaponized by the DOJ

 

In the original indictment of Maduro, the DOJ explicitly accused Maduro of leading a narco-trafficking cartel called "Cartel of the Suns," referencing it over 30 times.

 

The revised DOJ indictment of Maduro unsealed on January 3 states, "Starting in or about 1999, Venezuela became a safe haven for drug traffickers willing to pay for protection and support corrupt Venezuelan civilian and military officials, who operated outside the reach of Colombian law enforcement and armed forces bolstered by United States anti-narcotics assistance."

 

It continues: "The profits of that illegal activity flow to corrupt rank-and-file civilian, military, and intelligence officials, who operate in a patronage system run by those at the top-referred to as the Cartel de Los Soles or Cartel of the Suns."

 

The informal network of corrupt military officials was in fact established by the CIA under pro-US Venezuelan governments during the 1980's and '90's. Americans were introduced to this inconvenient truth not by some dissident muckraker, but by the New York Times, and by Mike Wallace in a 60 Minutes exposé broadcast in 1993.

 

Three years earlier, US Customs officials in Miami had intercepted a shipment of 1,000 pounds of pure cocaine from Venezuela. But they were soon told by higher-ups in the US government the shipments had been approved by Langley. According to the Times, the CIA sought to allow the cocaine to "enter the United States without being seized, so as to allay all suspicion. The idea was to gather as much intelligence as possible on members of the drug gangs."

 

"I really take great exception to the fact that 1,000 kilos came in, funded by US taxpayer money," then-DEA attache to Venezuela Annabelle Grimm remarked to 60 Minutes. "I found that particularly appalling."

 

To organize the shipments from Venezuela, the CIA recruited generals from the Venezuelan National Guard who were trained by the US. Because officers in the National Guard wore patches on their uniforms bearing the symbol of a sun, the informal drug network was branded as "The Cartel of the Suns."

 

In the years after the CIA-run cartel was exposed in US media, it disappeared, only to be revived when the US government began hounding Gen. Carvajal, who may soon appear as its key witness against Maduro. While corruption is still present in the Venezuelan military, there is little evidence of anything resembling a Cartel of the Suns in its ranks.

 

As Phil Gunson, a Caracas-based analyst for the International Crisis Group, told CNN, "Cartel de los Soles, per se, doesn't exist. It's a journalistic expression created to refer to the involvement of Venezuelan authorities in drug trafficking."

 

A former senior US official echoed Gunson, describing Cartel of the Suns as "a made-up name used to describe an ad hoc group of Venezuelan officials involved in the trafficking of drugs through Venezuela. It doesn't have the hierarchy or command-and-control structure of a traditional cartel."

 

The official told CNN that the DEA or Defense Intelligence Agency had supplied Trump with a "purely political" assessment of the cartel to support his assault on Venezuela.

Former Austin ISD Elementary Teacher Pleads Guilty to Possessing Child Sexual Abuse Material

 

AUSTIN, Texas – A former elementary school teacher pleaded guilty in a federal court in Austin today to possession of child pornography.

 

According to court documents, a digital forensic analysis of seized devices determined that Carl David Innmon, 51, possessed more than 16,000 files depicting child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on a laptop computer and an additional 349,728 files depicting CSAM on an external hard drive. Thousands of the images possessed by Innmon involved prepubescent minors under the age of 12.

 

Innmon was a fifth-grade teacher in the Austin Independent School District at the time of his April 2025 arrest and had previously worked as a substitute teacher at approximately 20 other schools within the district. He faces up to 20 years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

 

U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas made the announcement.

 

The FBI and the Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division are investigating the case.

 

Assistant U.S. Attorney Grant Sparks is prosecuting the case.

TD Bank Insider Pleads Guilty to Facilitating Money Laundering

 

A former New York-based employee of TD Bank N.A, Wilfredo Aquino, pleaded guilty today to facilitating a money laundering network’s movement of hundreds of millions of dollars through TD Bank accounts.

 

“The defendant leveraged his position at TD Bank and facilitated the criminal activity of a money laundering network that moved hundreds of millions of dollars through the bank’s accounts,” said Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “During the illicit scheme, the defendant evaded reporting requirements to hide the identity of the leader of the money laundering network. The Criminal Division is fully committed to rooting out money-laundering networks and their facilitators that exploit the security and stability of our country’s banking system.”

 

“Aquino helped criminals launder money from inside TD Bank,” said Senior Counsel Philip Lamparello for the Criminal and Special Prosecutions Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey. “Bank employees are the first line of defense against money laundering, fraud, and other financial crimes. When bank employees ignore their obligations and instead use their positions to commit crimes and line their own pockets, we will not hesitate to hold them accountable.”

 

“Wilfredo Aquino’s position at TD Bank required him to report suspicious customer activity and adhere to robust anti-money laundering regulations,” said Special Agent in Charge Jenifer L. Piovesan of the IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) Newark Field Office. “Instead, he turned a blind eye to complying with the law and prioritized enriching himself. IRS-CI will continue working with our law enforcement partners to investigate individuals taking advantage of our financial system through criminal activity.”

 

Aquino, 47, of New York, pleaded guilty to a one-count information charging him with conspiring to launder monetary instruments. He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 12.

 

According to court filings, beginning in 2019 and continuing until February 2021, Aquino, then a TD Bank assistant store manager, leveraged his position to facilitate a money laundering network’s movement of hundreds of millions of dollars through TD Bank accounts. During that time, the leader of the network, Da Ying Sze, also known as David, and his co-conspirators (collectively known as David’s Network) moved approximately $474 million through TD Bank accounts by depositing cash at TD Bank stores in New York, New Jersey, and elsewhere. In February 2022, David pleaded guilty to coordinating a $653 million money laundering conspiracy, operating an unlicensed money transmitting business, and bribing bank employees in connection with financial transactions.

Nine Salinas Acosta Plaza Norteño Gang Members Indicted For Racketeering Conspiracy

 

SAN JOSE – A federal grand jury has indicted nine South Bay men for taking part in a racketeering conspiracy to promote the aims of the Salinas Acosta Plaza Norteños (SAP Norteños) street gang by engaging in multiple crimes, including 11 murders, 14 attempted murders, drug and gun distribution, and other related offenses.

 

The superseding indictment, filed Dec. 18, 2025, and unsealed today, charges nine defendants, Gustavo Garcia, aka “Tatis,” 26; Lorenzo Garcia Jr., aka “Chito,” 32; Bertin Medrano, aka “Dre,” 32; Jesus Saldana aka “D Rose,” 22; Oscar Benitez aka “Sideshow,” 27; Carlos Gutierrez aka “Black Carlos,” 19; Jesus Avalos Fernandez aka “Chuchin,” 27; Jose Aguilera aka “Jay,” 26; and Marco Sanchez aka “Cooks,” 29, each with one count of racketeering conspiracy. Eleven defendants, including Gustavo Garcia, Lorenzo Garcia, and Medrano, were originally indicted in April 2024. Saldana was arrested this morning in a coordinated law enforcement operation and was arraigned in federal district court this afternoon. The other defendants were already in federal or state custody.

 

“For more than a decade, this gang has terrorized the residents of the Acosta Plaza townhomes and East Salinas more broadly. The violent criminal activity that defendants have been charged with is appalling and unacceptable. We will not stop until the residents of this community feel safe and secure in their homes,” said United States Attorney Craig H. Missakian. “I want to thank Homeland Security Investigations and the Salinas Police Department for their excellent work and collaboration.”

 

“Homeland Security Investigations is committed to investigating, and bringing to justice, dangerous criminal gangs threatening our communities. We will continue to work with our local, state, and federal partners to dismantle these groups and disrupt their illicit and violent enterprises,” said HSI Acting Special Agent in Charge Jeff Brannigan.

 

According to the superseding indictment, the SAP Norteños are a street gang that originated in a Salinas townhome complex by the same name. The group is now recognized as a clique within the larger collection of Norteño criminal street gangs. Members of the street gang work together to carry out crimes for the benefit of the street gang, its members, the larger Norteño organization, and the Nuestra Familia prison gang. Crimes are perpetrated by gang members to protect and uphold its power, territory, and profits, and gang members are expected to engage in shootings, robberies, drug sales, and other criminal conduct to gain entry into, and improve a member’s status in, the gang. Once in the gang, attempting to leave is not permitted; the punishment for attempting to leave is death.

 

The superseding indictment lists more than four dozen criminal acts that the defendants are alleged to have committed, including murders and attempted murders between July 2014 and April 2024 of perceived rival gang members, transient individuals, and former gang members. Defendants are also alleged to have engaged in multiple other crimes, including the robberies of individuals at gunpoint, the firebombing of a Salinas apartment, the distribution of drugs including fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana, firearms trafficking, and numerous shootings.

 

An indictment merely alleges that crimes have been committed, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. If convicted, each defendant faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and $250,000 fine for racketeering conspiracy in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1962(c).

Beijing just quietly told its biggest banks to open their books and reveal how much exposure they have to Venezuela, signaling that even China is getting nervous about Trump’s foreign policy wild card.

Apparently, Chinese regulators are asking lenders to disclose their financial ties to Maduro’s regime, after years of oil-backed loans, debt rollovers, and economic lifelines.

Why now? Because after the U.S. raid on Caracas, the legal and political risk around Venezuela’s assets (especially Citgo) just went vertical.

And if Trump’s threats toward Colombia escalate? China’s financial footprint in the region could get caught in the blast radius.

The United States is an essential partner in this endeavour, as a NATO ally and through the defence agreement between the Kingdom of Denmark and the United States of 1951.

In a joint statement released January 6, the foreign ministers of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden emphasized their collective commitment to preserving security and stability in the Arctic region while pointedly reinforcing that “matters concerning Denmark and Greenland are for Denmark and Greenland to decide alone.”

 

The statement came in direct response to an earlier declaration by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who told media that “President Trump has made it well known that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority of the United States, and it’s vital to deter our adversaries in the Arctic region.” Leavitt added that “utilizing the U.S. Military is always an option at the Commander-in-Chief’s disposal.”

Trump’s interest in Greenland extends beyond recent statements. As president-elect in January 2025, he made his intentions clear, viewing territorial expansion as a way to create a lasting legacy.

 

The strategic value of Greenland to both American and global interests is considerable. The island holds valuable oil, gas and mineral reserves, sits close to Arctic shipping routes, and hosts the northernmost U.S. military base. Its location makes it strategically significant for ballistic missile early-warning systems, as the shortest route from Europe to North America runs through the Arctic.

 

Trump first raised the idea of purchasing Greenland in 2017, becoming more serious about it in 2019 before being publicly rebuffed by Denmark. The ambition is not without historical precedent—President Harry Truman’s administration made a secret bid to acquire Greenland for $100 million in 1946, which Denmark quietly rejected.

 

The Nordic ministers’ statement underscored their collective military preparedness, noting they have “substantially increased our investments in Arctic security and we are ready to do even more in close consultation with the United States and other NATO allies.” They also expressed support for NATO increasing its presence and vigilance in the region.

 

Denmark has consistently maintained that Greenland is not for sale, despite the island’s 57,000 residents now governing their own domestic affairs after centuries of Danish control. Fed prosecutor warns more arrests coming after ‘massive’ fraud found in California homeless services: ‘We followed the money’

A federal prosecutor probing corruption in California’s homeless services promised that more arrests are coming after two real estate executives were busted for allegedly bilking taxpayers out of millions.

First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli told The Post a coalition of federal agencies has uncovered wrongdoing on a staggering scale as he blasted Democrats as “colossal failures” for letting corruption fester for years.

“We followed the money and very quickly we uncovered massive amounts of fraud,” Essayli said.

The recent indictments of housing executives Cody Holmes and Steven Taylor were just the tip of the iceberg, as the duo face accusations that they pocketed state funds intended for homeless housing, the prosecutor said.

“That’s just beginning to scratch the surface,” Essayli said. “We have dozens of other investigations ongoing and we expect to bring more charges this year, and perhaps this month.”

Holmes, former executive at Shangri-La industries, allegedly embezzled about $2 million from “Homekey” — a homeless housing program created during the pandemic — and used the proceeds for luxury purchases for himself and his girlfriend.

Taylor, a Brentwood developer, is accused of defrauding lenders in a scheme to “flip” a Cheviot Hills property to Weingart Center Association, a state-funded homeless nonprofit.

Kevin Murray, Weingart Center’s CEO, resigned from his role at a state housing oversight board amid questions about his knowledge of the dirty housing deal.

Essayli, a former California state Assembly member, blasted his former Democratic colleagues for presiding over fraud and corruption and described oversight efforts as little more than lip service.

“They’re liars, they’re straight up liars,” he said. “They’ve been in control of the government, all branches of government, for over a decade … when I was in the Legislature, they had no interest. They do not care.”

A ringleader of the $250 million Minnesota welfare fraud scandal has been ordered to forfeit her Porsche, diamond jewelry, Luis Vuitton bags, and millions of dollars in bank accounts.

An order from a judge just before New Year's Eve was the latest ignominy for Aimee Bock, 44, who prosecutors declared was behind one of the biggest fraud schemes of the pandemic era.

The vast majority of the more than 57 people so far convicted in the case are part of Minnesota's Somali community - Bock is not - and the case has exploded onto the national stage.

On Monday, Minnesota governor Tim Walz announced he would not run for a third term after it happened 'on my watch' and admitted 'the buck does stop with me.'

In a preliminary court order, reviewed by the Daily Mail, Bock was ordered to forfeit $3,506,066 seized from a Bank of America account in the name of her nonprofit Feeding Our Future, along with $179,455 in a personal account.

She was also ordered to give up her Porsche Panamera, around 60 laptops, iPads and iPhones found at three addresses, along with a diamond necklace, bracelet and earrings, and her Louis Vuitton purse and backpack.

Bock was found guilty in March after a six-week trial on charges of wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, bribery, and conspiracy to commit federal programs bribery.

She is being held in Sherburne County Jail in Minnesota awaiting sentence.

Americans ditch cheese after learning Pfizer's ingredient is now found in 90% of dairy products

 

Many Americans were surprised to learn that roughly 90 percent of cheese contains a lab-made enzyme developed by Pfizer, and it does not have to be labeled.

 

The ingredient, known as fermentation-produced chymosin (FPC), is a genetically engineered version of rennet, an enzyme used to coagulate milk during cheesemaking.

 

While FPC has been used for decades, a viral social media post this week brought renewed attention to its origins, sparking widespread backlash and calls for greater transparency.

 

On X, one user asked, 'How is this allowed?' and others vowed to stop buying American-made cheese.

 

Another user shared: 'I feel it's better for transparency on the ingredient lists on cheeses. 'The lab-created rennet should be listed as pseudo-rennet. I, too, prefer real cheese with nothing artificial added to it.'

 

FPC was developed in 1990, when Pfizer scientists engineered a microorganism to produce chymosin, the key enzyme found in calf rennet.

 

The innovation revolutionized cheesemaking by making the process cheaper, faster and more consistent.

 

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved FPC as 'Generally Recognized as Safe' (GRAS), a regulatory designation that allows substances to enter the food supply without full pre-market approval.

 

The FDA's decision relied in part on a 90-day rat feeding study.

UK and France to send troops to Ukraine if peace deal agreed

The UK and France have signed a declaration of intent on deploying troops in Ukraine if a peace deal is made with Russia, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced.

 

After talks with Ukraine's allies in Paris, he said the UK and France would "establish military hubs across Ukraine" to deter future invasion, while French President Emmanuel Macron later said thousands of troops may be deployed.

 

Allies also largely agreed robust security guarantees for Ukraine and proposed that the US would take the lead in monitoring a truce. But the key issue of territory is still being discussed.

 

Russia has repeatedly warned that any foreign troops in Ukraine would be a "legitimate target".

 

Moscow has not yet commented on the announcements made in the French capital.

 

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and Moscow currently controls about 20% of Ukrainian territory.

 

Heads of state and top officials from the "Coalition of the Willing" took part in Tuesday's talks in Paris.

 

Speaking at a joint press conference after the meeting, Starmer said: "We signed a declaration of intent on the deployment of forces to Ukraine in the event of a peace deal.

 

"This is a vital part of our commitment to stand with Ukraine for the long-term.

 

"It paves the way for the legal framework under which British, French, and partner forces could operate on Ukrainian soil, securing Ukraine's skies and seas, and regenerating Ukraine's armed forces for the future."

 

The UK prime minister added London would participate in any US-led verification of a potential ceasefire.

 

Top US negotiator Steve Witkoff said "durable security guarantees and robust prosperity commitments are essential to a lasting peace" in Ukraine - referring to a key demand made by Kyiv.

 

Witkoff said the allies "largely finished" their work on agreeing security protocols "so that people of Ukraine know that when this [war] ends, it ends forever".

 

Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump's special envoy and son-in-law, said that after a deal Ukrainians needed to know that "real backstops" were in place to ensure war would "not happen again".

 

Meanwhile, President Macron said Ukraine's allies had made "considerable progress" at the talks.

 

He said "robust" security guarantees for Kyiv had been agreed in the event of a potential ceasefire.

 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a "huge step forward" had been made in Paris, but added that he would only consider efforts to be "enough" if they resulted in the end of the war.

 

What Ukraine calls security "guarantees" and what American officials have described as security "protocols" may leave some wiggle room for Trump in the event of coming to Kyiv's defence after a future Russian attack - but there is no doubt Zelensky feels he and his European allies have secured an important concession from Washington.

 

We heard few, if any, new details about where a future ceasefire line would be drawn and what territory, currently occupied by Russian forces, Ukraine would agree to surrender.

 

That prospect is still something many Ukrainians would find hard to swallow, especially as Russia continues to strike against cities and critical infrastructure across Ukraine on a daily basis.

 

But as the snows fall and bitter winds sweep in from the east, Zelensky knows the only alternative to a ceasefire and subsequent peace deal, is another costly, attritional winter of warfare with the inevitable loss of life that will hit Ukraine far harder than Russia.

 

Ukraine's president clearly hopes that guarantees of American monitoring, a multinational force on Ukrainian soil and more weapons support for his armed forces, will convince a sometimes-sceptical population that he is right to sue for peace, bolstered by a growing international coalition.

 

But, in concluding the Paris press conference, Zelensky acknowledged Tuesday's "milestone" did not necessarily guarantee peace. Real progress still needs Russian support, and Moscow has been notably silent in recent days about diplomatic efforts to end the war.

 

Putin is known to oppose the prospect of a European-led international force in any disputed areas and will be reluctant to halt his troops', albeit slow, advance if Moscow's war objectives have not been realised.
