ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

 

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. UN Israel lobby group created fake Francesca Albanese video

 

The fake video a number of European governments are using to demand the resignation of Palestinian rights champion Francesca Albanese was created by a UN-accredited Israel lobby group.

 

The Orwellian-named ‘UN Watch’ claims to exist to hold the UN to its charter. In fact, it is an outright Israel lobby group – but one with access to the corridors of the UN in Geneva. It has unequivocal anti-Albanese form – it tried and failed in 2025 to prevent her re-accreditation as UN special rapporteur for occupied Palestine.

 

Having failed via the open route to oust Albanese, it is now accused – with evidence – of trying to do it by creating a fake video of her. The video supposedly showed Albanese describing Israel as the ‘common enemy of the world’. This would have been accurate, but was not actually what she had said in her speech.

 

As former UN human rights commissioner Craig Mokhiber observed, the “despicable” UN Watch has decades of form and has no place anywhere near the UN, but is also invited by US politicians to address them. Mokhiber demanded the withdrawal of its UN credentials:

And the evidence appears strong that the lobby group is the origin of the fake video. As policy expert Martin Konečný pointed out, the first appearance of the video online appears to have been in a post by UN Watch director and Israel propagandist Hillel Neuer:

Berkshire Dumps Most Of Its Amazon Shares, Sells More Apple And BofA; Buys Small New York Times Position

 

In Warren Buffett's last quarter as CEO of Berkshire, the Omaha conglomerate slashed several key positions, most notably Amazon which was reduced by over 77%, as well as core holdings Apple and Bank of America, while adding modestly to a handful of stakes such as Chevron and Chubb, and entering a tiny new position in the New York Times, the just published 13F for Q4 2025 revealed.

 

Berkshire's most notable moves were all sales, led by a 7.7 million share dump of AMZN, a 77.2% drop in Berkshire's holdings, to just 2.28 million shares from 10 million as of Q3. Berkshire first bought a stake in Amazon in 2019; at the time Buffett said that despite his historical aversion to technology stocks, he’d been “an idiot for not buying” the online retail giant’s shares sooner. Six years later, Buffett - or whoever runs the stockpiking there - has clearly decided they would be an idiot to keep holding on to Amazon.

 

Also in Q4, Berkshire continued cutting its stakes in Apple (its largest holding) and Bank of America (its 3rd largest position), trimming these by 4.3% and 8.9% to 227.9 million shares and 517.3 million shares, respectively. Buffett first started cutting those positions in 2024, after initiating the AAPL position in 2015.

 

Other holdings that were trimmed included Davita, Constellation Brands, AON, Pool and Liberty Latin.

 

It wasn't all sales: in Q4, Berkshire increased its stakes in oil producer Chevron and insurance firm Chubb during the period, to 6.5% and 8.7%, respectively. The conglomerate unveiled its initial investment in Chubb in May 2024, after secretly building it the previous year. Chubb’s shares rose roughly 11% over the fourth quarter after a trade publication reported that the firm made an informal approach to buy American International Group. Berkshire also added modestly to its Dominos Pizza stake.

 

Berkshire also launched a small new position in New York Times, adding 5.1 million shares valued at $352 million at the end of Q4, making it Berkshire's 29th largest holding out of 38.

 

Buffett, who stepped down as CEO at the end of 2025, appeared to be back on the hunt for purchases in recent quarters, reaching a deal to buy Occidental Petroleum's petrochemical business for $9.7 billion and building a $5.6 billion stake in Alphabet. Both positions were unchanged in Q4.

Ukraine's President Zelensky has over some four years of war with Russia made very clear his unbending stance that Ukraine will never cede territory for sake of achieving peace under his watch. Yet reaching a peace settlement precisely hinges on this, as Russia will also not give up the territory it has conquered in the Donbas, including the four eastern territories in declared part of the Russian Federation in a 2022 'popular referendum'.

 

The White House finally appears to be ratcheting up the pressure on Zelensky to make some kind of serious land concession, however. This was evident in the latest comments by President Trump on the topic of Geneva talks this week. Frustration with Kiev was evident he told reporters aboard Air Force One, "Well, we have big talks." He stated that "It’s going to be very easy. I mean, look, so far, Ukraine better come to the table fast. That’s all I’m telling you."

 

This raised eyebrows among Western allies given Trump seemed to put blame squarely on Zelensky and Ukraine for failing to advance the talks, and the Trump-backed 20-point peace plan which is on the table.

 

This unexpected statement of Trump's was serious enough for Zelensky to issue a response later the same day. The Ukrainian leader said in a just published interview with Axios that the Ukrainian public itself won't let him cede territory.

 

It seems this is his way of evading the mounting criticism and pressure from Trump - basically by passing it off as unpopular domestically. According to Axios:

 

Zelensky said U.S. mediators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have told him Russia genuinely wants to end the war, and that he should coordinate with his own negotiating team on that basis ahead of the talks.

But Zelensky made clear he's much more pessimistic. He also advised Witkoff and Kushner that they shouldn't try to force him to sell a vision of peace his own people would see as an "unsuccessful story."

He went so far as to proclaim to Axios that it was "not fair" for President Trump to continually call out Ukraine to make concessions, when Moscow is the aggressor.

 

Ukraine has recently offered a 'freeze' of the front lines, but not permanent and political recognition of territory, which has been long sought by the Putin government. Zelensky has also lately urged a face to face meeting with President Putin, but the Kremlin has made clear nothing of the sort will happen until an acceptable deal is ready to be signed.

 

In the interview Zelensky suggested that given Russia's size and power, it is easier for the US leader to lean on much smaller Ukraine to make big sacrifices at the negotiating table.

 

"I hope it is just his tactics and not the decision," Zelensky said. "We respect each other," he said of Trump, while again thanking the US for seeking to arrange a peace agreement. According to Axios, here's where things stand on the territorial question amid talks in Geneva:

We also visited government-funded youth centers, including Framtidens Hus, “House of the Future,” which pays $5,000 to each employee. They employ a total of fifteen staff members and provide free music, cooking lessons, and video games to teenagers — all paid for by taxpayers.

The North African nation was confirmed in 2023 as a co-host alongside Spain and Portugal, a decision that animal rights groupsclaim has coincided with a widespread cull of strays across Moroccan cities.

 

Activists have said thealleged effort aims to make cities and tourist hotspots appear cleaner and safer, as well as more appealing to international visitors, fans, and media, in an attempt to avoid negative perceptions associated with strays

 

An estimated three million stray dogs live on Morocco's streets.

 

Animal welfare organizations have released images and testimony alleging Moroccan authorities are using harsh methods, including clamping dogs by the neck, loading them into trucks and poisoning or shooting them before disposing of their bodies in mass graves.

 

A report published last month described Marrakech, expected to host World Cup matches,as a 'kill center,' where canines were transported in white vans and processed in warehouse facilities fitted with meat hooks and washable flooring.

 

Witnesses in other host cities alleged that dogs were starved for days before being burned alive at rubbish depots.

 

The International Animal Welfare and Protection Coalition (IAWPC)said Morocco has a pattern of large-scale animal killings ahead of major international events, arguing that organizations like FIFA are not issuing orders but are effectively enabling the practice.

 

The coalition submitted a 91-page dossier to FIFA, including photographs documenting poisonings, forced starvation, and the shooting of dogs. Despite the evidence, questions remain about how seriously the allegations are being addressed.

 

'After the [World Cup confirmation], the extermination of the dogs has increased dramatically,' IAWPC said in a statement.

 

'As a result, the fear is that Morocco will now go ahead with their plan for the mass slaughter of three million dogs.'

 

AFIFA spokespersontold Daily Mail that during its bid for the 2030 FIFA World Cup,Morocco emphasized its commitment to animal welfare, noting government efforts to expand clinics and support programs for stray dogs.

 

'With the bidding process now completed, FIFA is following up with its local counterparts with the aim of ensuring commitments are upheld,' the FIFA spokesperson continued.

 

FIFA also said it is working with the animal welfare group IAWPC, which convened a global panel of senior legal and animal welfare experts to review Morocco's draft regulations; their recommendations have now been submitted to Moroccan authorities.

 

Morocco's Embassy in London has denied the claims, insisting there is no cull of stray dogs and citing what it described as the country's commitment to humane and sustainable animal management.

 

A spokesman said last year that Morocco launched a Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Release program in 2019 and is investing in clinics, veterinary services, and municipal hygiene systems, adding: 'It is entirely untrue that Morocco is planning to cull stray dogs ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.'

 

However, documents obtained by The Athleticreportedly show local authorities ordered 1,000 rounds of ammunition in September 2025 to deal with stray dogs.

They claim dogs are being poisoned with strychnine, injected directly into their bodies or fed through bait.

 

Gunmen reportedly patrol the streets around the clock, shooting the animals and often leaving them wounded to die in agony.

 

Other dogs are said to be trapped with clamping devices, thrown into trucks, and transported to facilities where they are inhumanely killed.

The leaders of the militia, wanting to give the impression of tribal hostilities, persuaded Southern Paiutes to join with a larger party of militiamen disguised as Native Americans in an attack on the wagon train.

 

During the militia's first assault, the travelers fought back, and a five-day siege ensued. Eventually, fear spread among the militia's leaders that some immigrants had caught sight of the white men, likely discerning the actual identity of a majority of the attackers. As a result, militia commander William H. Dame ordered his forces to kill the travelers. By this time, the travelers were running low on water and provisions, and allowed some members of the militia – who approached under a white flag – to enter their camp. The militia members assured the immigrants they were protected, and after handing over their weapons, the immigrants were escorted away from their defensive position. After walking a distance from the camp, the militiamen, with the help of auxiliary forces hiding nearby, attacked the travelers. The perpetrators killed all the adults and older children in the group, in the end sparing only seventeen young children ages six and under.[a]

 

Following the massacre, the perpetrators buried some of the remains but ultimately left most of the bodies exposed to wild animals and the climate. Local families took in the surviving children, with many of the victims' possessions and remaining livestock being auctioned off. Investigations, which were interrupted by the American Civil War, resulted in nine indictments in 1874. Of the men who were indicted, only Lee was tried in a court of law. After two trials in the Utah Territory, Lee was convicted by a jury, sentenced to death and executed by firing squad on March 23, 1877.
