ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

 

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.

On a daily basis, Democrats refer to Republicans as racists, Nazis, and fascists. Meanwhile, they push for DEI, affirmative action, and race-based admissions, hiring, and promotions, which are objectively racist policies.

 

Republicans are characterized as racists because they want all laws to apply equally to everyone, with no preference given to any race, while Democrats not only have a long history of race-based policies but were also the founders of the KKK. The Republican Party, meanwhile, was formed largely by abolitionists, specifically to stop the expansion of slavery.

 

Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president, elected in 1860 as the candidate of a party founded in 1854 primarily in opposition to the extension of slavery into new territories. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in January 1863, presided over the Union victory in the Civil War, and was assassinated in April 1865, days after Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. Republican-controlled Congresses then passed the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery in 1865, the 14th Amendment establishing citizenship and equal protection in 1868, and the 15th Amendment guaranteeing voting rights regardless of race in 1870.

 

The Democratic Party went in the opposite direction by restricting voting rights and attempting to disenfranchise Black people. That campaign ran from the 1890s through the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965.

 

After the Populist Party was defeated in the 1890s, Democrats amended state constitutions to include poll taxes and other disfranchising measures. Because payment of the tax was required to vote, impoverished Black people, and often poor whites who could not afford it, were denied the right to vote.

 

Democratic-controlled state legislatures across the South also imposed literacy tests, grandfather clauses, and whites-only primaries between 1895 and 1910 to exclude Black voters while exempting whites.

 

One tactic that has entered the historical memory of this era, and was later mentioned by Barack Obama at Congressman John Lewis’s funeral, was the so-called jelly bean test. Registrars asked Black applicants to guess the number of jelly beans in a jar. Alabama voter Theresa Burroughs recounted being asked exactly this by the Hale County Board of Registrars in the late 1940s. According to NPR’s account, it was one of the tactics used to delay her voter registration by two years.

Western Moon, Eastern Sea

 

The Mare Orientale, Latin for Eastern Sea, is one of the most striking large scale lunar features. The youngest of the large lunar impact basins it's very difficult to see from an earthbound perspective. Still, captured on July 7 during a period of favorable tilt, or libration of the lunar nearside, the Eastern Sea can be found at the upper right in this sharp telescopic view. In the image, the large lunar mare is extremely foreshortened and stretches along the Moon's western edge. Formed by the impact of an asteroid over 3 billion years ago and nearly 1000 kilometers across, the impact basin's concentric circular features are ripples in the lunar crust. But they are a little easier to spot in more direct images of the region taken from lunar orbit. So why is the Eastern Sea at the Moon's western edge? The Mare Orientale lunar feature was named before 1961. That's when the convention labeling east and west on lunar maps was reversed.

Court Holds Federal Law Bars States From Giving Illegal Aliens In-State Tuition

A federal appeals court has kept in place a ruling that stops Texas from handing illegal aliens discounted in-state college tuitionwhile charging out-of-state American citizens far more.

 

In its July 9 opinion, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a lower court’s refusal to let outside groups enter the case and defend the tuition break. Judge Jerry Smith wrote that a federal statutepreempts the Texas provisions, because a state cannot grant illegal aliens a residency-based tuition benefit unless every U.S. citizen qualifies for it regardless of where they live. The panel found the groups offered no viable defense and, as nonparties, could not appeal the judgment itself.

 

The Justice Department sued Texas in June 2025, and the state agreed to a consent judgment blocking the law that same day.

 

Then-Attorney General Pam Bondi praised the agreement.

 

“The Justice Department commends Texas leadership and AG Ken Paxton for swiftly working with us to halt a program that was treating Americans like second-class citizens in their own country,” Bondi said in a statement released by the Justice Department. “Other states should take note that we will continue filing affirmative litigation to remedy unconstitutional state laws that discriminate against American citizens.”

 

Texas started charging the reduced rate to those students in 2001, the first state to open the benefit to them, the Texas Tribune reported.The government built its case on a 2023 appeals court decision that flagged likely preemption trouble with the state’s policy.

 

Judge Irma Carrillo Ramirez dissented. She argued the relevant statute violates the Tenth Amendment by directing states rather than regulating individuals, pointing to the Supreme Court’s ruling in Murphy v. NCAA. Ramirez also expressed doubt that a genuine dispute existed, noting the district court approved the deal roughly six hours after the suit landed.

 

The would-be defenders had made the same argument, telling the panel the case amounted to a friendly suit because Texas and the Justice Department wanted identical results, Courthouse News Service reported.

 

The Texas case is one of several the Justice Department has brought against similar state laws, the Presidents’ Alliance litigation tracker shows. A federal court in Minnesota rejected the government’s reading of the relevant statute in March.

Ann Widdecombe death sparks murder probe – police launch manhunt for 'white male' suspect

The death of the former Tory minister and Reform politician was announced on Friday morning.

A murder investigation has been launched following the death of Express columnist and former MP Ann Widdecombe. The death of the former Tory and Reform politician was announced this morning, with tributes quickly pouring in. This afternoon, Devon and Cornwall Police described her death at her home as "suspicious", and said officers are hunting for a suspect.

The force said police officers were called to an address at Haytor by the ambulance service at around 11.40am yesterday, on July 9. The statement continued: "Sadly, 78-year-old Miss Widdecombe was located deceased within the property. She had sustained serious injuries." Her next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers, the force added.

On Friday afternoon, police announced detectives from the Force Major Crime Investigation Team launched a murder investigation and are conducting extensive enquiries into the circumstances surrounding Miss Widdecombe’s death.

A cordon remains in place at the property while specialist officers continue forensic examinations. There are road closures in place around the scene.

The force added officers are conducting house-to-house and CCTV enquiries, and members of the public will notice a significant police presence in the area.

Police are working to track down a suspect, believed to be a white male, Detective Chief Inspector Ilona Rosson.

She said: "This is an extremely tragic incident and our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of Ann Widdecombe at this difficult time.

“Our murder enquiry is in its early stages but moving at a significant pace. We are deploying all of the necessary resources to find out exactly what has happened and to locate the person responsible who we believe to be a white male.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have information about this incident, however insignificant it may seem, to come forward and speak with us.

"We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the vicinity of Haytor Vale, Haytor, or anyone with CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage which could assist with our investigation.

"We have an increased uniformed police presence in the area to both support the investigation and provide reassurance to residents. Anyone with concerns can speak with our officers at the scene.

“We will release further information when we are able to do so. In the meantime I would ask people not to speculate about what might have happened, particularly on social media. Lt. Jeremy Lanier works crimes against children and called the case the most disturbing he has ever seen.

 

Lanier began his investigation after the Stephenville Police Department was notified by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that it had received a number of tips about Cadenhead’s disturbing online behavior.

 

Lanier received a search warrant for Cadenhead’s home and seized his laptop, which was sent to the Texas Department of Public Safety lab in Austin where a plethora of heinous images and videos were discovered.

 

“To be perfectly honest, the child pornography is probably the least egregious crime he has committed; he is a scary kid,” Lanier told Beneath the Surface News. “His whole thing is about online manipulation.”

 

Erath County Assistant District Attorney Jett Smith said Cadenhead referred to himself as a “cult leader” who encouraged others to engage in sextortion and doxing.

 

“The evidence presented at the punishment hearing showed that the defendant possessed images of young children not only being sexually abused, but also choked, beaten, suffocated and grievously injured,” Smith said. “The defendant used these images to coerce others into mutilating themselves, including carving his screen name into their bodies, and harming animals.”

 

One particularly disturbing video retrieved from Cadenhead’s computer showed one of his followers killing her hamster.

 

When asked how Cadenhead responded to the police investigation, Lanier said, “He couldn’t have cared less.”

 

At the time of his arrest, Cadenhead was living at home and not going to school.

 

“He spent all of his time on the computer terrorizing people,” Lanier said. “My response to the sentencing is that the evidence showed that he presents a danger to the children and youth of this community.

 

“If he had continued access to the Internet, I believe he would have continued the behavior.”

 

Smith also supported Cadenhead’s punishment.

 

“The depravity and future dangerousness of this defendant is reflected in the sentence handed down by Judge Cashon,” he said.

Rise of violent online extremists targeting children leads to wave of arrests, lawsuits

 

What’s perhaps most stunning is that this federal investigation, which according to the FBI now involves more than 350 cases, more than a dozen of them in Maryland alone and each of the bureau's 56 field offices, began in the bedroom of a 15-year-old high school dropout from Stephenville, Texas.

 

Prosecutors said Bradley Cadenhead, now 20, first created 764 on Discord, the messaging app popular with gamers. The name, 764, was taken from the partial Stephenville zip code, a small town of 22,000, a little more than an hour southwest of Fort Worth.

 

Cadenhead is currently serving an 80-year sentence in Texas state prison for multiple child pornography and sex offenses, crimes that included coercing minor females to make what’s called “cut signs.”

 

“They will get their victim to take a knife, some kind of sharp object, and they will have them cut their username into their skin, into their flesh,” DeGeorge said. “It just kind of reinforces their mentality of, ‘OK, well, I own you. You are my almost virtual slave.’ It's very, very disturbing to see that.”

 

Baron Martin, 21, of Tucson, Arizona, an alleged member of 764 who hid behind the Discord username “Convict,” posted a guidebook online, according to a federal criminal complaint.

 

The digital manual instructed 764 followers on how to groom and extort minor females and encouraged members “to target vulnerable populations, those struggling with mental health issues, eating disorders or who already self-harm.”

 

Through extortion and coercion, DeGeorge says, 764 members have succeeded in getting minor victims to engage in sex acts, cut themselves, crush animals, light themselves on fire, and even livestream their own suicides.

 

In late November, DeGeorge and his team arrested 20-year-old Erik Lee Madison in his home in Halethorpe, Maryland, near Baltimore.

 

According to federal charging documents, Madison used a burner phone, told alleged victims he lived in Germany and went by the name “Leo.” It took federal agents more than a year to identify and arrest Madison, DeGeorge says.

 

Madison’s grandfather told the 7News I-Team that Madison has “always been a follower.” He declined to speak in greater detail. Madison’s mother declined an interview request.

 

Federal prosecutors said Madison coerced multiple victims to self-harm, asking one 14-year-old girl during an early September chat on Discord, “can you cut today. I need you to use your blood to draw on a wall.”

 

The teen later told investigators she communicated with Madison on Discord after first meeting him on Roblox, an online gaming site built largely for children.

 

Based in San Mateo, California, Roblox boasts more than 150 million daily users, roughly 40% of them under 13. The company is currently facing dozens of lawsuits from families and three different state Attorneys General.

 

“They don't want the truth to come out about how dangerous this platform is, about how long they've known how dangerous it is,” said Alexandra Walsh, a partner with the law firm Anapol Weiss.

 

Walsh, who has 16 active lawsuits against Roblox, alleges her clients were initially groomed by sexual predators or violent extremists on the gaming platform. Two-thirds of her lawsuits also name Discord as a defendant.

 

“We hear about the radicalization of youth in other parts of the world. It is happening in this country. It is happening through platforms like Roblox,” Walsh said.

 

In her lawsuits, Walsh details how Roblox executives allegedly resisted efforts to set up any child safety guardrails in the interest of increasing engagement.

 

“The corporate culture is about growth, growth, growth, and it continues to be to this day,” Walsh said. “Any kind of safety feature that was going to create friction for that growth, that was going to slow that growth, was something that the company was reluctant to adopt, and in many cases did not adopt.”

 

Roblox recently announced comprehensive safety reforms, like AI-powered facial age-estimation technology to access the chat function, part of what its CEO, David Baszucki, called the “gold standard” for child safety and something other apps with minor users were sure to copy. But those changes won’t go into effect in the U.S. until January.

 

The company declined to provide a comment to 7News about the ongoing lawsuits or broader concerns about child safety.

 

A spokesperson for the messaging App Discord sent 7News a statement which reads in part, “The actions of extremist groups have no place on Discord or anywhere in society. We’re committed to user safety and have dedicated teams working to disrupt these networks. "

UFO Files Reveal 1949 Los Alamos ‘Green Fireball’ Mystery

The Trump administration has released newly declassified records detailing a 1949 Los Alamos conference on mysterious “green fireballs,” adding one of the earliest government‑documented UFO investigations to the PURSUE transparency initiative.

The Department of Defense (War) is publishing previously classified UAP (Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena) files every few weeks, giving researchers their first direct access to Cold War-era material long sealed inside federal archives.

The release could shape how scientists, historians and national‑security analysts interpret early government attempts to understand unexplained aerial phenomena.

 

Assistant to the Secretary of War for Public Affairs and Senior Advisor Sean Parnell said the fourth tranche of files is now live on WAR.GOV/UFO, noting that “the Department of War and our agency partners are actively working on the next release of UAP files.”

The newly released transcript shows top Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory physicists—including Dr. Edward Teller, Dr. Norris E. Bradbury, and meteor expert Dr. Lincoln LaPaz—confronting a phenomenon they could not explain.

Airline pilots, federal agents and military personnel had reported bright green objects streaking horizontally across the sky in late 1948 and early 1949.

 

LaPaz told the group that the December 12, 1948, event he witnessed was “most certainly not a conventional meteorite fall.”

He described a fireball that appeared “in full intensity instantly,” maintained constant brightness, and traveled on a nearly horizontal path before breaking into “bright green” fragments.

 

Pattern That Defied Known Meteor Behavior

Investigators documented three green‑fireball paths in detail. Each traveled at low altitude—8 to 10 miles—and maintained nearly constant velocity over long horizontal distances.

LaPaz said he could not find “anywhere among meteorists” examples of conventional meteorites behaving this way.

 

The January 30, 1949, event was tracked by more than 100 observers across New Mexico and West Texas.

The appearance point was southwest of Amarillo, Texas, and the disappearance point was near Lubbock, Texas, with trained observers providing azimuth and elevation measurements within minutes.

LaPaz emphasized that the objects produced no sound, calling it “the most implausible feature of all,” given that meteorites bright enough to be seen at 400 miles typically generate explosive noise and trigger widespread animal alarm—none of which occurred.

 

Witnesses consistently described the fireballs’ color as a vivid green.

According to the transcript, observers repeatedly selected wavelengths “between 4900 and possibly 5300,” clustering around 5218 angstroms—a hue LaPaz compared to copper salts in a Bunsen burner.

He noted that such coloration was not characteristic of known meteorites, which contain only “the merest trace of copper.”

 

The transcript captures a moment when the nation’s leading physicists openly acknowledged that the green fireballs did not fit any known natural explanation.

Teller pressed LaPaz on intensity and duration, while investigators described dozens of sightings from airline pilots, military personnel and federal agents.

 

The release offers an unusually candid view of Cold War‑era scientific uncertainty inside the country’s premier nuclear laboratory—a window into how seriously the government treated unexplained aerial phenomena long before modern UAP programs existed.

On-Orbit Checkouts in Progress for Mission to Boost NASA’s Swift

Commissioning is well underway for Katalyst’s robotic servicing spacecraft LINK, which is designed to boost the orbit of NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. After a July 3 launch that delivered LINK into orbit as expected, the spacecraft remains healthy.

The Katalyst team established contact with LINK that same day and began the process known as commissioning, in which they check out the spacecraft’s systems, make any adjustments needed based on how those systems are operating in orbit, and prepare the spacecraft for its mission.

 

The team quickly worked through a number of standard, early on-orbit procedures, including successful solar array deployment, delivery of power to the spacecraft, and establishing routine communications.

They stabilized the spacecraft after an initial period of excess momentum and enabled autonomous momentum management.

Katalyst is now checking out LINK’s subsystems, including its electric propulsion system, which involves firing the spacecraft’s three xenon-fueled thrusters.

 

The commissioning process is anticipated to take a few weeks, with flexibility built in to allow the team to pause, assess data, and adjust as needed.

NASA Space Telescope Maps Magnetic Fields of ‘Lighthouse’ Pulsar

A pulsar is a type of neutron star with a strong magnetic field that spins incredibly fast. The pulsar at the center of the Lighthouse Nebula is rotating 16 times per second.

Neutron stars are the leftover cores of massive stars, formed at the end of their life cycles, that possess more mass than the Sun. They are condensed down to the size of a city, making them natural laboratories for studying extreme physics.

Polarization is a property of light that describes the direction of its electric field vibrations. The polarization degree is a measurement of how aligned those vibrations are with each other.

 

In June 2025, IXPE spent nearly 18 days focused on the Lighthouse Nebula.

Astronomers studied two narrow X-ray offshoots extending from the pulsar to better understand how electrons at nearly the speed of light interact with this energetic system. The longer offshoot is known as the “filament,” and the shorter one is the “trail.”

When high-energy particles from the pulsar collide with the gas of interstellar space, they form a bow shock, like the bow wave formed at the front of a speeding boat. Most particles become trapped behind this bow shock, forming the turbulent trail behind the pulsar.

 

Researchers have suspected since 2008 that the highest-energy particles escape through this bow shock into interstellar space, flowing along the galaxy’s magnetic field lines to create the nebula’s long, thin filament.

“We wanted to test that theory,” said Jack Dinsmore, undergraduate student at Stanford University, who led the study. “The ‘smoking gun’ would come by measuring the polarization of the light, which indicates the magnetic field direction.

If the magnetic field points along the filament, that confirms that the filament’s particles are flowing along the field.”

 

One challenge with these measurements is that the Lighthouse Nebula is relatively faint. To address this, IXPE scientists developed advanced analysis methods that use every bit of data, avoiding simplifying steps that could limit information.

With these new tools and the new observations of the Lighthouse, the science team successfully measured the filament’s polarization. These techniques also gave a polarization measurement of the trail, and the pulsar’s emission signal.

Their analysis confirmed with more than 99% confidence that the magnetic field does indeed align with the particles’ flow.

 

While the parallel direction confirms models for the particle’s motion, the polarization degree was high enough to raise new questions.

“Many of the models for filaments assume strong magnetic turbulence,” said Roger Romani, a Stanford University professor who co-authored this paper. “The high polarization degree we measured indicates lower turbulence than such models require.”

 

The IXPE observations also showed that the magnetic field responsible for X-ray emission had to be parallel to the trail. However, the authors collected radio frequency observations showing a magnetic field pointing almost exactly perpendicular.

“The striking divergence in magnetic field orientations observed between radio and X-ray wavelengths provides compelling evidence for the highly structured nature of these objects,” said Niccolò Bucciantini of the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics and co-author of the study.

“This marks the first clear indication that particles of different energies occupy distinct regions within the system, hinting at the presence of multiple, and potentially very different, acceleration mechanisms at work.”
