“If they never get the SAVE America Act done, you have the right to declare a national security emergency for elections,” Root said. Hilton says a whistleblower from the Pomona Fairplex facility described pressure to speed up the release of children while safeguards meant to vet sponsors were weakened. Watch live: Perseid meteor shower peaks August 12–13 under moonless skies

The Perseid meteor shower will reach its 2026 maximum during the night of August 12–13, with the International Meteor Organization placing the nominal peak between 02:00 and 04:00 UTC on August 13.

A New Moon on August 12 will eliminate lunar interference, providing excellent conditions for optical observations.

 

The broader Perseid maximum extends beyond the two-hour nominal peak.

Previous International Meteor Organization (IMO) observations place the traditional broad maximum in a range corresponding in 2026 to approximately 21:00 UTC on August 12 through 09:00 UTC on August 13.

NASA also places the peak from the evening of August 12 into the early hours of August 13. The New Moon on August 12 will leave the sky free of moonlight, allowing fainter meteors to remain visible where weather and local light pollution permit.

 

Watch live

The Virtual Telescope Project will broadcast the 2026 Perseid meteor shower live and free beginning at 22:30 UTC on August 12. The feed will use an all-sky camera at Manciano, Italy, in the Maremma countryside.

NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center will hos their watch party live on YouTube, starting at 23:00 CT on August 12.

 

Throughout the broadcast, they will show real-time sky imagery from Marshall’s Automated Lunar and Meteor Observatory (ALaMO).

Meteoroid experts from Marshall and guest subject matter experts will join the event to discuss the science behind the Perseids and answer your questions in real time.

 

IMO lists the Perseids as active from July 17 through August 24, with a nominal zenithal hourly rate (ZHR) of 100 and a meteoroid velocity of 59 km/s (37 miles/s).

ZHR represents the calculated rate under ideal observing conditions with the radiant overhead and should not be read as a guarantee that an observer will see 100 meteors in one hour.

 

The Perseids originate from material released by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Earth passes through the comet’s debris stream each year, and particles entering the atmosphere at high speed produce the streaks of light seen as meteors.

The shower takes its name from its radiant near the constellation Perseus.

 

Viewing geometry favors mid-northern latitudes. IMO says the radiant reaches a reasonable elevation from approximately 22:00–23:00 LT onward at mid-northern sites.

The shower cannot be properly viewed from most of the Southern Hemisphere or from latitudes north of approximately 60° N.

 

NASA advises observers to find a dark, open site, look generally toward the northeast after darkness falls and allow approximately 30 minutes for their eyes to adapt.

Meteors can appear across any part of the sky, and viewing improves later in the night as the Perseid radiant rises higher.

 

Calculations cited by IMO place Earth at one branch of an old 1079 Swift-Tuttle dust trail at 16:53 UTC on August 12. Because the trail is very old, the calculation provides no estimate of resulting meteor activity.

A separate calculation places an encounter with a weak Swift-Tuttle filament near 01:00 UTC on August 13, with an uncertainty of ±5 hours. The modeled component has an expected ZHR of no more than 43.

 

IMO notes that the trail and filament could become detectable if the normal Perseid background rate is lower.

Neither calculation establishes an outburst or meteor-storm forecast for 2026. IMO gives no activity estimate for the 1079 trail and describes the second component as a weak filament.

 

Enhanced activity after the principal maximum has been recorded during some previous Perseid returns, and IMO recommends including the nights around the main maximum in observing programs.

NASA has responded again to debunked claims that Earth will lose gravity briefly on Wednesday.

Social media has been awash with claims that our planet will briefly lose its gravity on Wednesday, a theory tied to an alleged leaked NASA project known as "Project Anchor."

 

What Is 'Project Anchor'?

In a January report, fact-checking outlet Snopes examined the “Project Anchor” claim after it began spreading online.

The rumor alleged that a secret NASA document had leaked in November 2024, warning that Earth would briefly “lose gravity” on August 12, 2026, causing mass casualties and global disruption.

 

Snopes rated the claim false, reporting that it found no credible search results that any such NASA project leaked.

According to Snopes, the story appeared to pick up steam through copy-and-paste social media posts, including an Instagram video that claimed NASA was preparing for a seven-second “gravitational anomaly” but withholding the information from the public.

The posts included dramatic details, such as an alleged $89 billion budget, predictions of tens of millions of deaths, and claims that only selected officials and specialists would be protected in bunkers.

 

Solar Eclipse, Meteor Shower Expected Wednesday

Today’s date is of astronomical significance, with a total solar eclipse expected to be visible along a path that crosses Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, the Atlantic Ocean, Spain and a small corner of Portugal.

Other countries in the Northern Hemisphere will also be able to view a partial eclipse, according to NASA—including parts of the northern U.S. (from Alaska to North Carolina), most of Canada, much of Europe, and northwestern Africa.

 

NASA’s statement added: “A total solar eclipse has no unusual impact on Earth's gravity.

The gravitational attraction of the Sun and Moon on the Earth, which doesn't impact Earth's total gravity, but does impact tidal forces, is well understood and is predictable decades in advance."

The annual Perseid meteor shower is also expected to reach its peak Wednesday night into early Thursday morning, NASA said previously.

NASA Completes Astronaut-Deployed Science Instrument for Lunar Surface

NASA has declared “wrenches down” on the first completed payload designed for Artemis astronauts to deploy on the Moon's surface.

Engineers working on NASA’s Lunar Environment Monitoring Station, or LEMS, have completed hardware development and testing and the payload is ready for its permanent home near the lunar South Pole.

With the hardware complete, LEMS is ready to support one of the Artemis program’s core goals: enabling sustained lunar science and exploration.

 

The LEMS instrument package contains two highly sensitive seismometers that will monitor ground vibrations from moonquakes and meteorite impacts, providing scientists with insights into the Moon’s interior and the seismic hazards astronauts might encounter at the surface.

Its modular design allows the system to be adapted or expanded to host new instruments in the future, creating a reusable platform that can evolve as scientific priorities grow.

The payload will remain in a clean room at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, where it was built, until it is assigned to an Artemis mission for deployment to the lunar surface.

 

“The completion of the LEMS scientific instrument is a major step in a new era of lunar surface science.

Innovative science experiments will uncover, measure, and reveal the Moon’s secrets while astronauts open new frontiers for discovery,” said Joel Kearns, deputy associate administrator for exploration, Science Mission Directorate, NASA Headquarters in Washington.

“And, behind the scenes, countless teams across NASA and our partners are pushing the boundaries of what surface instruments can do, building the tools that will make future exploration possible and safer.”

 

The LEMS payload builds on a legacy of lunar seismic tracking. Apollo astronauts deployed a network of seismometers on the Moon’s nearside equatorial region between 1969 and 1972.

Those instruments operated until 1977, recording about 13,000 moonquakes and other ground vibrations that helped scientists begin to understand the composition of the Moon’s interior.

For decades, researchers have hoped to spread more seismometers, updated with new technologies, across the lunar surface.

Now, LEMS will carry the first seismometers to be deployed by future astronauts to listen for faint ground vibrations, collecting new clues to the Moon’s internal structure and ongoing seismic activity.

The sensors will be the most compact, sensitive, and energy-efficient seismometers ever built for planetary exploration.

 

LEMS itself is about the size of a small suitcase, weighing 11 pounds in the Moon’s low-gravity environment. It will carry not just these seismic sensors, but everything it needs to function independently of humans after deployment.

LEMS is built to manage its own power production via a lightweight, flexible solar array that conforms to the shape of the LEMS unit. It also will manage its operational activities to ensure continuous data collection based on a preset plan, and monthly data transmission to Earth.

The payload will do all this while maintaining a stable internal temperature throughout the massive day-to-night temperature swings of the South Pole region.

 

“When we conceived of LEMS, we weren’t just thinking about the next mission, we were thinking about the next generation of lunar exploration,” said Mehdi Benna, a University of Maryland Baltimore County scientist who leads LEMS from NASA Goddard.

“Our vision was to create a scientific buoy for the Moon. Like an ocean buoy on Earth, LEMS is designed to be easy to build, adaptable to different scientific objectives, and capable of operating independently for years.”

 

Before any surface science could happen, Benna and his team had to ensure that LEMS could survive the trip to the Moon and the harsh environment of its surface.

Over the past five months, LEMS and its components have been subjected to a demanding series of environmental and operational tests.

Engineers verified LEMS can endure the violent shaking of launch, the journey to the lunar surface, and the Moon’s temperature and radiation environment.

The team also showed that the instrument package’s mechanical and electrical design is safe for astronaut handling.

 

The LEMS payload was built to operate through the lunar night, which lasts two Earth weeks, without external power assistance or a heat source. Past lunar surface instruments relied on radioisotope heaters for warmth and power.

But LEMS instead will withstand temperatures that dip to minus 400 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas by using advanced insulation materials, low-thermal-conductivity cables that minimize heat loss, and a thermal regulator that conducts heat away during the day to prevent overheating and helps retain heat at night.

 

These innovations reduce mass and power needs, setting the stage for lighter, energy-efficient instruments that can operate continuously at future Artemis landing sites and the NASA-led Moon Base.

Crew Works Vein Scans For Health and Suit Checks for Spacewalk

Vein scans and spacesuit checks were the top duties for the Expedition 75 crew aboard the International Space Station on Tuesday. The orbital residents also continued their Earth photography sessions, cargo operations, and life support maintenance.

 

Station commander Jessica Meir kicked off her shift collecting blood samples inside the Columbus laboratory module for the Venous Flow investigation that is exploring how microgravity affects the circulatory system.

 

Afterward, she spun the samples in a centrifuge, analyzed the samples for signs of space-caused blood issues, then stowed the samples in a science freezer for preservation.

 

NASA flight engineer Jack Hathaway took charge of Tuesday’s first set of vein scans operating the Ultrasound 3 biomedical device to observe Meir’s internal jugular veins then measured her blood pressure.

 

Meir and Hathaway also took part in the second set of vein scans after lunchtime taking turns using the Ultrasound 3 with flight engineers Anil Menon of NASA, Sophie Adenot of ESA (European Space Agency) and Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina, both from Roscosmos.

 

Doctors on the ground monitored the ultrasound scans in real-time to understand the risk of blood flow anomalies and blood clots during a spaceflight.

 

Hathaway, Menon, and Adenot also worked together throughout Tuesday servicing spacesuit gear ahead of a spacewalk planned for Tuesday, Aug. 18.

 

The trio took turns swapping spacesuit components inside the Quest airlock where Menon and Adenot will exit the orbital outpost next week.

 

The spacewalking duo will spend about six-and-a-half hours swapping out a high-speed data and communications antenna on the station’s Z1 truss segment.

 

Roscosmos flight engineer Andrey Fedyaev had a busy Tuesday, first starting his shift photographing landmarks throughout Africa and Eastern Europe. Next, Fedyaev spent the rest of his day inside the Zarya module troubleshooting electronics gear and laptop computers.

 

Dubrov began his day cleaning smoke detectors in the Poisk module then wrapped up his shift loading obsolete hardware inside the Progress 94 cargo spacecraft for disposal when it departs in September.

 

Kikina worked primarily inside the Zvezda service module maintaining the ventilation system and cleaning areas behind the panels inside Zarya.

Aug. 12 (UPI) – President Donald Trump confirmed he was smuggled off Air Force One and secretly boarded onto a different aircraft before departing the NATO Summit in Turkey for a flight to a British air base in July, amid a possible threat on his life.

 

Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Tuesday night, Trump saidthe decision to make the switch in Ankara was made by the "Secret Service and the military."

 

"I go by Secret Service and the military. They wanted me to go in a different flight, different plane.I just have to do what they say," he said.

 

NBC News said it had confirmation of reports that after apparently boarding Air Force One as normal, Trump was moved, secreted in a catering truck,to an unmarked VIP transport aircraftfor the first leg of the July 8 flight back to the United States, via RAF Mildenhall.

 

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent remained on board and the press corps accompanying Trump and most White House staffers flew the leg on Air Force One unawarethat Trump was not present, but Trump dismissed questions over whether leaving them aboard the decoy aircraft may have placed them in harm's way.

 

"I think actually the plane that I flew on was at greater risk. I think it was at greater risk because that would be the plane I think that they would be more likely to go for," said Trump, without saying why that might be the case.

 

Trump said he didn't delve too much into the threat but he said he was "not surprised" he had been targeted, saying it was an occupational hazard for any president who was getting results.

 

"Any consequential president has a lot of threats," he said.

 

NBC said it had been told by a U.S. official the switchwas due to credible intelligence of an Iranian threat to kill Trump, possibly using a shoulder-fired missile launcher to attack Air Force One as it departed Ankara.

 

Other reports said U.S. intelligence had information of a person with a shoulder-fired missile launcher seen near where the summit was being held.

 

"As the president has said recently, there are many enemies of America who have their sights on him, and we use every tool at our disposal to address those threats," the White House said in a statement to ABC News.

 

Trump said at the time he would take the original Air Force One and not the new one provided by Qatar because he was sending it to Mildenhall for U.S. service members to tour.

 

However, the sequence of events was that Trump boarded Air Force One in view of the cameras in Ankara, clandestinely switched to the C-32 carrying Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for the flight to Britain. Once on the ground at Mildenhall,the maneuver was reversed and Trump emerged from Air Force One as if he'd been aboard the whole time.

 

Administration officials,even Hegseth, reportedly were unaware of the ruse until afterward.

 

Trump subsequently switched onto the new Qatari-gifted "Air Force One" for the rest of the flight back to Washington.

S&P 500 rises after tame inflation data; AI-related shares jump: Live updates

 

The S&P 500 rose on Wednesday on the back of a tame U.S. inflation report and tech gains led by artificial intelligence plays CoreWeave

and Super Micro Computer.

 

The broad market index climbed 0.3%, while the Nasdaq Composite added 0.7%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average

traded around the flatline.

 

July’s consumer price index came in as expected, with headline rising 0.1% on the month and the annual inflation rate landing at 3.4%. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, advanced 0.2% last month and 2.5% on the year. The annual rate for both headline and core CPI marked a slight decrease from June.

 

This comes as the Federal Reserve has been laser focused on the impact higher pricing pressures are having on the U.S. consumer, with three dissenters at the last meeting voting to raise rates. Those concerns have yet to abate, with U.S. oil prices pushing above $83 a barrel Wednesday, as hopes of a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz dwindle.

 

However, odds that the Fed will leave its rates unchanged next month increased following the report. Fed funds futures trading is now pricing in a roughly 58% chance that the central bank will keep its benchmark ​rate in its current range of 3.50% ​to 3.75%, according to the CME FedWatch tool. That’s up from more than 45% a week ago.

 

“In-line inflation will keep the ‘no need to hike rates’ narrative that took hold after last week’s jobs report intact,” said Ellen Zentner, chief economic strategist at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. “There will be another round of inflation data before the September FOMC meeting, so the storyline could still change. But unless those numbers tell a much different story, the Fed will likely still be in a position to leave rates unchanged next month.”

 

Meanwhile, the latest quarterly results and guidance from CoreWeave and Super Micro Computer reassured investors that demand in the artificial intelligence buildout is stable. CoreWeave shares jumped 18% after the cloud infrastructure mainstay’s second-quarter adjusted operating income margin of 5% exceeded expectations, while its revenue doubled from a year ago. Super Micro Computer added 14% following a strong earnings and revenue forecast for the first quarter.

 

Other stocks related to AI also gained. Dell Technologies

and Micron Technology

advanced more than 5% and 6%, respectively, while Cisco Systems rose more than 2%. Additionally, U.S.-listed shares of Dutch neocloud specialist Nebius

were also up more than 27%.

SpaceX could make $500 billion in 2028, Elon Musk says

SpaceX is an AI company now, and it sees huge money in the burgeoning field.

 

SpaceX isn't a launch company anymore.

SpaceX is famous for launching, and landing, its Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets and sending astronauts to space aboard its Dragon crew capsule.

Recently, however, the company has been transitioning into an artificial intelligence (AI) outfit — and that journey is now mostly complete.

"Our AI revenue will exceed all other SpaceX revenue probably in September — like, next month — and will significantly exceed all other SpaceX revenue in in the fourth quarter," company founder and CEO Elon Musk said during an address to employees that the company posted on X today (Aug. 11). "So, AI has become an extremely important part of SpaceX's future."

 

Earlier this year, SpaceX bought xAI, a startup that Musk founded in 2023. xAI created the chatbot Grok and also operates a powerful supercomputer cluster in Tennessee called Colossus.

But that was just the beginning. Musk laid out just how deeply SpaceX is diving into AI during his 29-minute talk, which came a week after SpaceX's first-ever quarterly earnings call as a public company.

 

"Probably in four or five years, AI will be 99% of the value of SpaceX; I'd say five years for sure," Musk said. "And the value of SpaceX will be some astronomical number."

Astronomical is right. According to Musk, the company aims to get 10 gigawatts of AI compute up and running by the end of next year. That's a big jump from its current 1.4 GW, which SpaceX sells to tech companies and AI labs.

"The value per watt is probably going to be 30 to $50, which means if we bring 10 gigawatts of AI online by the end of next year, it will be 300 to $500 billion a year in revenue," he said. "Big numbers."

 

And those numbers will get even bigger over time, if all goes according to plan.

SpaceX just announced plans to build a gigantic complex in Texas called Terafab, a joint operation with Tesla that will manufacture advanced semiconductor chips for a wide range of applications.

And the company aims to launch a million of its "Starmind" AI satellites to low Earth orbit in the coming years using its fully reusable Starship megarocket, which is still in development.

 

Over the longer haul, the company plans to establish factories on the moon that will build these off-Earth data centers.

The satellites will be launched into space from the lunar surface via electromagnetic mass drivers — basically, high-powered rail guns.

 

SpaceX envisions Starmind and its other AI efforts as returning almost unimaginable profits down the road.

For example, in paperwork the company filed just before its record-breaking IPO, SpaceX identified an eventual "total addressable market" of $28.5 trillion, nearly $23 trillion of it in the AI field.

For some perspective: The gross domestic product of the entire United States last year was about $30.8 trillion.

 

"The future is fundamentally AI and robots," Musk said during his address to employees.

"Assuming civilization continues to progress, I think that AI will probably — the amount of digital intelligence will probably be more than a trillion times the amount of biological intelligence."

 

He also said he's not just in this for the money.

"It's important that we have an AI that cares about humanity, that fosters humanity and helps take us to other planets and other star systems," Musk said.

"This is why I think it's essential that SpaceX succeed not just with AI hardware but also with AI software," he added. "I think an AI that is sort of SpaceX's baby will be a very good AI.

I think SpaceX is a collection of some of the very best humans on Earth, both in capability and morality and goodness."

 

He urged SpaceX employees to aid the company's AI efforts in any way that they can, stressing that success could lead to some amazing vacations.

"One of the nice benefits of this also is that anyone at SpaceX who wants to go to the moon or Mars will be able to go in the future," he said. "You have my word."

Scientists Release Biggest 2D Map of the Universe

The new DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys map serves as the foundation for the largest-ever 3D map of the Universe, used to investigate dark energy

 

Hold on to your telescopes: the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys team has released the largest-ever 2D map of the Universe.

The 5.6-trillion-pixel map contains nearly four billion celestial objects, including stars, galaxies, black holes, and asteroids. The data are available for all to use and are publicly viewable through the Legacy Survey Sky Viewer.

 

Astronomers and citizen scientists can combine the map with their own observations to better understand our Universe.

Researchers can search for rare phenomena like gravitational lenses, observe fleeting events like supernovae, and investigate two of physics’ biggest mysteries: dark matter, the invisible substance that accounts for most of the mass in our Universe, and dark energy, the force driving our Universe’s accelerating expansion.

 

The new map builds on earlier versions from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys that have already proved invaluable. To date, more than 1800 science papers have been published referencing the Legacy Surveys’ data.

“It’s part of the fabric of astronomy research now,” says David Schlegel, a co-lead of the Legacy Surveys and scientist at the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab).

“When you're working with astronomical objects today, you often start by pulling up the Legacy Imaging Viewer to see what you’re looking at.”

 

Covering roughly 75% of the sky in visible and near-infrared light, the updated map provides a deep view of the extragalactic Universe not blocked by the dust and stars of our own Milky Way.

Researchers expect it will remain the most comprehensive 2D map of our Universe for years to come.

 

More than 160 scientists contributed to data collection for the project, and a team of 20 produced the final dataset released today. It was built by combining 263,407 telescope exposures from three ground-based sky surveys:

In addition to the extended file collection, the DESI Legacy Surveys’ full catalog of data is made available as a searchable database via the Astro Data Lab at the Community Science and Data Center (CSDC), a Program of NSF NOIRLab.

These services are accessible to the entire astronomy community to facilitate data access and analysis.

The DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys were originally conducted to prepare for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey.

The Legacy Surveys’ 2D map is essentially a deep photograph of the sky; it records where galaxies and stars appear and how bright they appear.

This crucial step enables DESI to select objects and measure their light in different wavelengths to determine their distances, building the largest high-resolution 3D map ever made.

Scientists use this map to study the way galaxies have clustered at different ages of the Universe to track dark energy over time.

 

In April 2026, DESI completed its original five-year survey ahead of schedule and with vastly more objects than expected.

The early results have shown surprising hints that dark energy’s impact may be weakening over time — a paradigm shift that could potentially shape the predicted fate of our Universe.

DESI expects to publish improved results using its first five years of data in 2027 and is continuing observations into 2028.

 

Beyond supporting DESI, the Legacy Surveys will be a foundational reference for the next generation of telescopes.

As new observatories like NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory, jointly funded by the NSF and DOE’s Office of Science (DOE/SC), and NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope come online, researchers can compare their observations with one of the deepest and most comprehensive views of the sky ever assembled.

 

The Legacy Surveys’ data will also help scientists train artificial intelligence tools to analyze petabytes of astronomical data and accelerate new discoveries.

It will be among the datasets used in an astrophysics pilot project within the American Science Cloud, part of the DOE’s Genesis Mission.

Man accused of killing wife, child at in-home daycare center in Minnesota: Police

A man who co-owned an in-home daycare center with his wife is believed to have killed his wife and their child before taking his own life while other children were at the home, police in Minnesota said Wednesday.

 

Officers who responded Wednesday morning to the home in Hopkins found two adults and the child dead, according to Hopkins Police Chief Brent Johnson, who called the situation "horrific."

 

Six other children who were in the daycare at the time have since been reunified with their parents, Johnson said. He said they were all "very, very young" children.

 

A parent had arrived at the daycare to drop off their children when the incident is believed to have been unfolding, prompting a large police response just after 9 a.m. CT, according to the police chief.

 

Investigators are working to determine what weapons were involved, Johnson said.

 

Police did not release the names of the parents or their child.

Army Space, Golden Dome take center stage on opening day of SMD Symposium

The 2026 Space and Missile Defense Symposium opened Tuesday with a message that carried from the first military briefing of the morning to one of the most anticipated updates of the afternoon: the threat is changing quickly, and the military and defense industry have to move with speed.

Lt. Gen. John Rafferty, commanding general of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command, delivered the first major military update of SMD after Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle welcomed attendees to the Von Braun Center.

Rafferty was followed by U.S. Space Command and international space panels before Gen. Michael Guetlein, direct reporting program manager for Golden Dome for America, took the stage Tuesday afternoon.

 

Rafferty: Huntsville a ‘strategic advantage’

Rafferty began with Huntsville itself, pointing to the concentration of military, government and private industry surrounding Redstone Arsenal.

“I don’t think the visionaries of Operation Paperclip who brought those captured scientists here to North Alabama could have imagined the type of ecosystem that they would create,” Rafferty said. “It really is a national treasure and definitely a strategic advantage.”

Operation Paperclip was a U.S. government program that brought more than 1,600 German scientists, engineers and technicians to the United States after World War II to advance American military and space research.

Among them was Wernher von Braun, who came to Huntsville with his rocket team and helped establish the foundation for the city’s emergence as a center of U.S. space and missile technology.

 

Rafferty’s focus quickly turned to a rapidly evolving threat environment.

“The threat and the pace of change is remarkable,” Rafferty said.

 

Among Rafferty’s updates and priorities:

SMDC has added the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command and 263rd Army Air and Missile Defense Command to its forces and established Joint Task Force-Gold to help deliver Golden Dome for America.

Forces under the 32nd have spent the past 14 months in what Rafferty called “the largest air missile defense fight in U.S. history.”

He said 125 ballistic missiles were successfully engaged during the “12-day war” and more than 1,200 ballistic, cruise missile and unmanned aircraft threats have been neutralized during Operation Epic Fury.

SMDC is pushing for a broader missile defeat strategy that goes beyond interceptors to include electronic warfare, directed energy, data and integrated command and control.

Rafferty said the command will seek a closer relationship with the defense industry, telling attendees, “Today I pledge that SMDC is going to be a great teammate.”

Rafferty also challenged the industry to accept more development risk at home to reduce the risk faced by service members in combat.

“If we really mean it that we’ll never forget, then we’ll be willing to take risks,” Rafferty said. “Not operational risk. We’ll be willing to take schedule risk, investment risk, technical risk, take the operational risk and minimize it and take the risk back here.”

 

Golden Dome moves from concept to construction

By Tuesday afternoon, attention shifted to Golden Dome, where Guetlein said the homeland missile defense initiative has moved rapidly from presidential directive to contracts, testing and construction.

“Golden Dome did not exist a year ago,” Guetlein said. “It was a concept that came out of the EO, but it didn’t exist.”

Now, Guetlein said, “We are digging dirt around the homeland.”

 

Among the updates:

Golden Dome has its first operational site and is working toward delivering capabilities in summer 2028.

Guetlein said the program has completed two “phenomenally successful” tests.

Of $22.5 billion available, he said 90% is obligated and 95% committed.

Radars, launchers, space-based interceptors, hypersonic ballistic tracking and a space data network are under contract.

Guetlein continues to estimate the architecture at approximately $185 billion.

He described Golden Dome as a “systems of systems, multi domain layered architecture” designed to counter conventional and nuclear threats approaching the homeland from air, land, sea and space.

 

But Guetlein also identified a major hurdle ahead: fiscal 2027 funding.

Golden Dome’s initial funding came through reconciliation rather than the regular defense budget, meaning a continuing resolution would not provide the program the same funding bridge available to established programs.

“I will tell you that if they don’t figure it out, there is no Golden Dome because there is no funding,” Guetlein said.

 

Still, he expressed confidence Congress will find a way forward.

“I believe we’re going to figure this budget problem out,” Guetlein said. “I think the nation’s going to come together in a very bipartisan manner and figure out what needs to be done.”

Guetlein also made clear to the hundreds of companies filling the Von Braun Center have a role to play. He said he has already met one-on-one with more than 500 companies about Golden Dome challenges and potential solutions.

He announced the of an online Ecosystem Hub where companies can submit ideas and capabilities for consideration. Guetlein said submissions are vetted for security and potential foreign influence, with teams also available to help companies protect their intellectual property and networks.

 

Golden Dome has also created a digital environment designed to bring program data together and allow industry, academia and government partners to work with that data and develop potential solutions.

“We are open for business, we are testing, we are delivering capabilities, we are digging dirt,” Guetlein said.

 

SMD continues Wednesday, with U.S. Space Command Commander Gen. Stephen Whiting scheduled to deliver a USSPACECOM update at 8:45 a.m. as the command begins its transition to Redstone Arsenal.

Exclusive: Former Southern Poverty Law Center CFO arrested on fraud charges

 

A former chief financial officer at the Southern Poverty Law Center has been arrested in California on charges that she oversaw secret payments to informants inside of White supremacist groups, one of whom she was allegedly living with and had a romantic relationship with at the time.

 

The woman, Heidi Beirich, previously ran the SPLC’s project tracking hate groups in the US and allegedly “oversaw payments of donors’ money” to people inside of these hate groups, according to the indictment. Prosecutors say she shared a bank account with one of those sources, which included funds from the SPLC’s payments.

 

“I believe she was part of the effort to open bank accounts in completely fictitious companies’ names and make payments to individuals for reasons that that were not accurate as as described,” Attorney General Todd Blanche said at a news conference Wednesday. “This is exactly what we said would happen in a case like this, which is that our investigators and the US attorneys and the agents working the case will can keep on working it even after the initial indictment.”

 

Despite her role in overseeing the payments — some of which were directed to an Imperial Wizard in the KKK — Beirich allegedly had a romantic relationship with one source who infiltrated a White Supremacy group and stole documents from for the SPLC, according to the indictment.

 

That person, prosecutors say, was paid over $1 million by the SPLC since 2007 and shared a bank account with Beirich which contained $140,000 from those payments.

Exclusive: Former Southern Poverty Law Center CFO arrested on fraud charges

 

A former chief financial officer at the Southern Poverty Law Center has been arrested in California on charges that she oversaw secret payments to informants inside of White supremacist groups, one of whom she was allegedly living with and had a romantic relationship with at the time.

 

The woman, Heidi Beirich, previously ran the SPLC’s project tracking hate groups in the US and allegedly “oversaw payments of donors’ money” to people inside of these hate groups, according to the indictment. Prosecutors say she shared a bank account with one of those sources, which included funds from the SPLC’s payments.

 

“I believe she was part of the effort to open bank accounts in completely fictitious companies’ names and make payments to individuals for reasons that that were not accurate as as described,” Attorney General Todd Blanche said at a news conference Wednesday. “This is exactly what we said would happen in a case like this, which is that our investigators and the US attorneys and the agents working the case will can keep on working it even after the initial indictment.”

The strike hit the plant’s entry unit 2,200 kilometers behind the front, taking 40% of Russia’s LPG production offline indefinitely.

A Ukrainian drone strike shut the plant that produces 40% of Russia’s liquefied petroleum gas on 10 August, and the country’s fuel crisis snapped back across at least 16 regions within days.

The shutdown of the Sibur ZapSibNefteKhim complex in Tobolsk, western Siberia, removes about six million metric tons of annual LPG capacity from a fuel system that was already under strain.

 

Gasoline restrictions had begun easing across Russia at the end of July, when Ukrainian drones temporarily shifted to other targets. When the strikes resumed in early August, fuel rationing returned immediately, the independent Russian outlet 7×7 reported.

Three industry sources told Reuters on Tuesday that the complex stopped operations indefinitely “while the extent of the damage and its consequences are being assessed.”

No LPG volumes were offered from the Tobolsk delivery point on Russia’s commodity exchange—a point that earlier this year handled about 4,000 metric tons of propane-butane mix per day. Sibur declined to comment.

 

A strike on one unit stopped the entire plant

Tyumen Oblast Governor Aleksandr Moor confirmed a fire at an industrial site following a drone attack but did not identify the facility.

Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces Deep Strike units, working with the Russian insurgent movement Chornaya Iskra (Black Spark), claimed the strike. The plant sits more than 2,200 kilometers from the front line.

Fuel rationing returned within days

Across at least 16 regions, the fuel restrictions that had briefly eased in July are back, 7×7 reported.

In Sochi—Russia’s most famous beach resort—Mayor Andrei Proshunin said on Telegram that fuel was available at only 38 of the city’s 58 gas stations. Deputy Mayor Vyacheslav Bauer told residents and tourists to use public transport or stop driving, the Moscow Times reported.

 

In Bashkortostan, authorities banned gasoline sales in canisters, leaving at least one resident unable to fuel his lawnmower—as he complained to regional head Radiy Khabirov during a televised address, a Bashkortostan outlet reported.

Production at the Ufa petrochemical complex is unaffected by the drone strikes, Khabirov said.

 

Still, the shortage persists for a different reason: every time a drone-alert protocol is activated, fuel tankers halt en route to gas stations, regional official Elena Prochakovsky explained at a briefing reported by Prufy. T

hree districts remain in a fuel “red zone,” and 19 of 26 gas stations in Sterlitamak are operating.

Lipetsk Oblast Governor Igor Artamonov told residents not to expect improvement for one to two weeks, Lipetsk outlet Ploshchad reported. “If you can leave 10 liters unfilled, the person arriving on empty will thank you,” he said.

 

Russia’s fuel system was already breaking

The Tobolsk shutdown lands on an already fractured system. By mid-July, fuel rationing had spread to more than half of Russia’s regions.

Ukraine’s drone campaign had struck Russian refineries 194 times in the first half of 2026 alone—eleven times the previous year’s pace—knocking nearly half the country’s refining capacity offline, Ukraine’s General Staff reported on 4 July.

 

Repair timelines keep slipping because sanctions block the spare parts Russian plants need.

To plug the gap, Russia has banned gasoline exports, permitted lower-grade fuel, and begun importing gasoline from India and Morocco, refined from its own crude—shipping it 14,000 kilometers home because its refineries cannot meet domestic demand.

 

The Tobolsk shutdown removes more LPG output than any single strike of the war. Russia was already rationing fuel in more than half its regions before this strike.

Two US government officials cited anonymously by The Intercept rejected the Pentagon’s assessment, with one describing the report as a “total whitewash”and another calling it “a f***ing joke.”

 

More than 200 people have been killed since Washington launched its campaign against suspected drug-smuggling vessels. Around 120 died in 2025 alone, but none were classified as civilians in the Pentagon report.

 

The Trump administration has described those targeted as “narco-terrorists” linked to cartels it considers terrorist organizations.

Iran’s authorities have already reported more than 3,300 deaths since the conflict began in February, nearly half of them civilians. Among them are 200 children, including more than 120 schoolgirls killed in a US strike on an elementary school in Minab on the first day of the war.

Four Kids "Safety" Bills, Supporting Online Digital ID Agenda, Hit Senate Floor

 

KOSA and the CHATBOT Act say they do not require age verification. Their duties still revolve on knowing a user's age.

 

The CHATBOT Act says that nothing in it shall be construed to require a company to "implement an age gating or age verification" system, or to "affirmatively collect any personal data with respect to the age of any individual that the covered entity is not already collecting in the normal course" of its business. The Kids Online Safety Act carries a version of the same promise, ruling out "the affirmative collection of any personal data with respect to the age of users" that a platform doesn't already gather.

 

But now read the rest of the same bills…

 

Yesterday, the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee sent four children's online safety bills to the Senate floor, with parents who attribute the harm of their children to social media sitting right there in the room. KOSA went through on a unanimous voice vote. This obviously wasn't a place for a debate. The Youth AI Privacy Act from Senator Ed Markey advanced. So did the CHATBOT Act from Senator Ted Cruz, with Senators Schatz, Curtis and Schiff as co-sponsors. Senator Tammy Duckworth's bill makes four, and it orders the FTC and the Consumer Product Safety Commission to study AI-enabled toys, which turns on nothing a company has to know about a user. A fifth, the SCREEN Act, got a tally and no result, which we'll come back to.

 

KOSA passed the Senate in 2024 by 91 to 3, but the House never took it up. KOSA's "duty of care" is the provision that gets the attention. It requires platforms to "exercise reasonable care" in design features to prevent and mitigate a listed set of harms to minors, with the FTC enforcing, and the harms run from conditions with "clinically diagnosable symptoms" through patterns of use "that indicate compulsive" behavior to sexual exploitation. The House stripped it out. The Senate sponsors called that version dead on arrival.

 

The disclaimer and the duty

Every one of these bills turns on a company knowing something it has no way of knowing.

 

KOSA defines "know" as having "actual knowledge or knowledge fairly implied on the basis of objective circumstances." The CHATBOT Act uses the identical phrase. The Youth AI Privacy Act uses it too. And that definition does more than mark out a glossary entry, because almost every duty in these bills hangs off it. KOSA's safeguards apply to "a user that the covered platform knows is a minor." Its parental tools apply "in the case of a user that the platform knows is a child." The Youth AI Privacy Act's restrictions bind a deployer "with knowledge that a user of an AI chatbot is a minor."

 

KOSA says who determines what a company already knew. The Federal Trade Commission or a state attorney general "shall rely on competent and reliable evidence, taking into account the totality of the circumstances, including whether a reasonable and prudent person under the circumstances would have known" the user was a minor. The CHATBOT Act repeats the standard almost word for word. Violations are treated as unfair or deceptive acts under the FTC Act, and state attorneys general can sue on behalf of their own residents.

 

A company is liable for treating a minor as an adult. Treating an adult as a minor costs it nothing. The evidence of what it "should have known" gets assembled later, by a regulator or by an elected state attorney general, using a standard as elastic as the totality of the circumstances. The cheapest way to never be on the wrong side of that is to check everyone at the door and keep the receipt.

 

Others read it differently. The Age Verification Providers Association, whose members sell the checking, says KOSA sidesteps how a platform is meant to work out who is a minor, so that "the operative legal standard remains implied knowledge" and no service is obliged to install age-assurance technology.

 

Blumenthal calls KOSA "content neutral" and has said it would not let the FTC or state attorneys general sue over content or speech. That answers a different objection. Both answers leave an enforcer free to argue, after the fact, about what a company should have known about a user's age.

 

Congress left the words "check everyone" out of the text. Congress wrote a rule that only pays out one way, and then added a sentence saying it isn't requiring the obvious response to it.

 

So how is a company supposed to work out, without asking, which of its users a reasonable and prudent person would have known was fifteen?

Spiegel, citing an internal police report, also reported that "hybrid activity cannot be ruled out." However, the report says it is also not yet possible to answer the question of whether there is a connection to the drone attack in Leipzig.

However, there are indications that this may not have been a standard drone. This is supported by the fact that the drone was not detected by "currently available and operational drone detection devices."

In addition, the relatively long flight time - about two hours - also provides grounds for such assumptions.

 

The incident occurred a few days after the discovery of a drone equipped with explosives at Leipzig/Halle Airport on the night of August 5.

Canada’s University of Alberta has won a legal battle to dissolve a research trust named after Ukrainian SS veteran Yaroslav Hunka, whose standing ovation in the Canadian parliament from lawmakers, then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky sparked an international scandal.

 

The controversy erupted during Zelensky’s 2023 visit to Ottawa, when then-House Speaker AnthonyRota introduced Hunka, who served in the Waffen-SS Galicia Division during World War II, as “a Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero” to rapturous applause from the packed parliamentary chamber.

 

Hunka’s division was formed by Nazi Germany in 1943 largely from Ukrainian volunteers and has been linked to brutal anti-guerrilla operations in Poland and Soviet Ukraine and massacres of civilians. Nevertheless, the assembled Canadian lawmakers gave Hunka two standing ovations, joined by visiting German Ambassador Sabine Sparwasser.

 

After Hunka’s past came to light, the incident became an international embarrassment for Ottawa,drawing condemnation from multiple countries, Jewish rights groups, and the UN. Rota eventually resigned, while Trudeau issued a public apology.

 

Shortly after the scandal erupted, the University of Alberta acknowledged that it administered a research fund named after Hunka, a CAD30,000 ($21,500) endowment established with a donation from his son to support research into the history of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. It had remained largely obscure until the scandal, with no known beneficiaries.

 

The school apologized and announced plans to shut down the fund, but Hunka’s family opposed the move, arguing that his Waffen-SS service had been disclosed when the donation was made and that the university knew of his wartime record when it accepted the money. Citing a former university official, the family also noted that nine other university endowments were associated with Galicia Division members and, to their knowledge, had not been terminated.

 

The university argued that public reaction to Hunka’s Waffen-SS service meant continued association with his name could damage its reputation and public trust. The dispute went to court this spring.

 

In a ruling on Friday, Court of King’s Bench Justice Debra Yungwirth sided with the university, finding that the controversy had created sufficient reputational concerns to justify terminating the trust.

 

“The university did not terminate the Hunka Trust because it determined that Yaroslav was a war criminal or anti-Semitic,” she wrote. “The House of Commons incident, and the public response that followed, made it clear that maintaining the Hunka Trust was not in the university’s best interests.”

 

In an email to the Edmonton Journal, Hunka’s lawyer Julian Savaryn said his client is “disappointed” and considering an appeal.

 

Canada has a sizable ethnic Ukrainian community, partly due to post-World War II migration that included members of anti-Soviet forces, some of whom had collaborated with or served Nazi Germany. Among the Canadian lawmakers who gave Hunka a standing ovation was Chrystia Freeland, one of the country’s most prominent political figures of the past decade and a descendant of a known Ukrainian Nazi collaborator.

 

Following the scandal, Russia repeatedly called for Hunka’s extradition and accused Canada of “whitewashing” the crimes of Adolf Hitler’s regime by failing to prosecute the former SS soldier.

 

Moscow has also repeatedly condemned Kiev for honoring Ukrainian nationalist figures who collaborated with Nazi Germany and accused its Western backers of turning a blind eye. Ukraine has named streets and erected monuments to World War II-era nationalist figures such as Stepan Bandera, leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), whose factions were implicated in mass killings of Poles and Jews. Russia has cited “denazification” as one of the stated goals of its military operation against the Kiev regime.

Suspected RSF drones strike Sudan's Khartoum and Al Obeid

Drones suspected of having been launched by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) struck three cities, including the capital Khartoum, on Wednesday, residents said.

 

The drones hit an area west of Omdurman, part of the greater capital region and home to large army bases, according to residents. Bahri, another city forming part of the Nile-side capital, was also targeted, The National reported.

 

Drones also struck the industrial city of Atbara, north of Khartoum, as well as Al Obeid, a key city in the central Kordofan region that has been under partial siege by the RSF for months.

 

Media reports that could not immediately be confirmed said at least two people were killed and six injured when the drones struck Al Obeid. Residents said the apparent target was a base housing the army’s Fifth Infantry Division.

 

Residents in the capital reported seeing drones flying over the city before hearing loud explosions shortly after dawn. They could not determine the specific targets that were hit.

 

Videos posted online showed columns of black smoke rising above the capital, as well as footage of damaged buildings.

 

The National was not immediately able to verify the authenticity of the videos, and there was no immediate statement from either the RSF or the Sudanese Armed Forces — the other warring party in the civil conflict — regarding Wednesday’s drone attacks.

 

The attacks came a day after the RSF announced the capture of the town of Qayssan in the southern Blue Nile region, near the South Sudan border.

 

They also followed last month’s capture by the army and its allies of a key Kordofan city and several areas along a vital motorway leading to Khartoum.

 

Most of the recent fighting in Sudan’s civil war has been concentrated in Kordofan, where the RSF and its allies are seeking to complete a sweep of the resource-rich region after taking near-total control of neighboring Darfur last year.

 

The RSF also controls parts of Blue Nile State, while the army controls the capital and the northern, eastern and central regions.

 

The war broke out in April 2023 after months of tensions between army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah Al Burhan and RSF commander Gen. Mohamed Dagalo over their respective roles in a democratic Sudan escalated into open hostilities.

 

With the war now in its fourth year, tens of thousands of people are believed to have been killed and about 14 million displaced. The war has also created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with an estimated 20 million people grappling with hunger.

CAIRO (AP) — A drone strike ignited a fire at an electrical substation in western Libya on Wednesday, knocking the facility out of service in the latest of a wave of attacks on energy and oil infrastructure that threaten to plunge the country into further chaos.

 

The state-run General Electricity Company said in a statement that a power substation in the city of Zawiya that links power plants to homes and businesses was completely burned down.

 

The city of about 250,000 people has been rattled by a series of drone strikes that hit oil and power facilities. Zawiya is home to critical energy infrastructure, including Libya’s largest oil refinery, an export terminal and a power plant.

 

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the drone strikes.

 

The attacks come as tensions are rising between the government of Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah, who governs western Libya, and warlord Mohamed Bahroun, who controls the city of Zawiya. Much of western Libya is ruled by local militias loosely allied to Dbeibah’s government in Tripoli.

 

The country has been divided for years between rival administrations, each backed by armed groups and foreign governments. Dbeibah governs western Libya and the administration of Prime Minister Ossama Hammad governs the eastern part of the country.

 

The power company said the attack resulted in outages across southern parts of the city, which is located about 47 kilometers (29 miles) west of the capital Tripoli. Footage shared by the company showed massive flames and fireballs erupting from the facility.

 

Dbeibah denounced the attacks on energy and power installations as “a serious crime and an escalation that will not go unanswered.”

 

“We will reach those responsible for this attack, and the accountability will be firm. No one will be protected by their position, status, or influence,” he said in a statement.

 

On Monday, a drone strike hit a fuel-laden tank at Zawiya’s refinery, igniting a massive blaze which firefighters battled for over 15 hours. The refinery was repeatedly attacked over the weekend and on Tuesday, according to the state-run National Oil Corporation.

 

The power plant was hit by two drones on Tuesday, with one damaging its firefighting system while the second landed close to the facility’s main fuel storage, setting it on fire, the electricity company said.

 

After Tuesday’s attack on the power plant, the U.S. company General Electric withdrew its teams from the facility “until security conditions and a suitable and safe work environment are ensured,” the electricity company said. GE performs maintenance and upgrading services for the plant.

 

GE previously withdrew its staff from the plant over security concerns, prolonging the loss of more than 700 megawatts of the station’s production capacity, estimated at 1300 megawatts, the electricity company said.

 

The violence came as Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Dbeibah and Mohammad Younes Menfi, chairman of the Presidential Council in Tripoli on Tuesday, before traveling Wednesday to the eastern city of Benghazi to meet with powerful military commander Khalifa Hifter.

 

Turkey is the main foreign backer of Dbeibah’s government, but in recent years has also reached out to the rival authorities in eastern Libya in an attempt to mend ties, and as part of regional efforts to unify the North African country.

 

Libya, an oil-rich country on the Mediterranean, has been wracked by conflict since a NATO-backed uprising-turned-civil war toppled and killed longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011.

The woman, 33, and the man, 43, both from central Israel, are accused of numerous sexual offenses against the four children. The woman’s daughters were between 8 and 12-years-old at the time.

 

A woman and her partner were indicted on Wednesday in an exceptionally severe child sexual abuse case involving her two daughters and two infant relatives, the State Attorney’s Office announced.

 

The woman, 33, and the man, 43, both from central Israel, are accused of numerous sexual offenses against the four children. The woman’s daughters were between eight and 12-years-old at the time of the alleged offenses, while the other two children were between approximately one and three.

 

The Central District Attorney’s Office filed the indictment with the Central District Court in Lod and asked that both defendants remain in custody throughout the proceedings.

 

According to the indictment, the defendants met through a dating application about a year and a half ago and began an intimate relationship. Prosecutors alleged that they exchanged child sexual abuse material and discussed sexual fantasies involving the woman’s daughters.

 

Mother who sexually abused daughters hid evidence from police, prosecutors say

The indictment alleges that the woman, either at her own initiative or at the man’s request, repeatedly photographed, filmed and recorded her daughters in intimate situations, including while partially dressed or naked, and sent the material to him.

 

Prosecutors said the man praised the material, used it for sexual gratification and encouraged the woman to continue producing it.

 

The indictment further alleges that, during two meetings at the woman’s home, the defendants engaged in sexual activity while one or both daughters were asleep in the room. On another occasion, prosecutors said, the man committed indecent acts against the girls while visiting the woman and her daughters during a vacation.

 

The most serious allegations concern two very young members of the woman’s family. Prosecutors allege that the woman sexually assaulted both children, filmed the acts at the man’s request and sent him the recordings immediately afterward.

 

The indictment portrays the abuse as part of an effort by the woman to satisfy the man’s sexual demands and preserve their relationship. Prosecutors stressed that this remains their allegation and has not yet been tested in court.

 

The defendants are also accused of attempting to conceal evidence. Shortly after she was questioned, the woman allegedly deleted their correspondence from her cellphone the obstruct the investigation. Investigators later recovered the messages, according to the indictment.

 

Prosecutors said the defendants had also routinely deleted parts of their correspondence and that the man repeatedly urged the woman to erase the photographs and videos documenting the alleged abuse.

 

The charges include rape of a minor family member, soliciting the rape of a minor family member, committing indecent acts against children, using children to produce sexual abuse material, publishing and possessing such material, and obstructing justice. Each defendant was charged according to their alleged role.

 

In its request to keep the pair in custody, the prosecution said the alleged offenses were systematic and prolonged and involved extremely young and vulnerable children. The nature of the acts demonstrated that both defendants posed a serious danger to the public, prosecutors argued.

A spreadsheet that was recovered from U.S. intelligence agency files and made public Wednesday by the White House Government Transparency Task Force shows that spy agencies and the FBI created a list of more than six dozen prominent organizations, Americans or foreigners who became figures in the Biden family Ukraine scandal and the 2019 impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.

 

The spreadsheet neatly divided figures along political lines, with Democrats like the Bidens, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Barack Obama and George Soros listed as victimized “targets” of Russian disinformation and conservatives like Fox News, One America News, filmmaker Michael Caputo and Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani as “conduits” for disinformation.

 

The FBI also labeled two of President Donald Trump’s first-term Cabinet secretaries, Pompeo and Barr, as well as Republican Sens. Chuck Grassley, Ron Johnson and Lindsey Graham and House GOP committee chairmen Devin Nunes and Jim Jordan as “conduits” even while they all investigated whether the allegations of corruption against the Biden family were true.

The designations were part of a secret counterintelligence operation codenamed “Round River” that was launched during the 2020 election by a task force of FBI analysts claiming to be fighting “malign foreign influence” in the 2020 election, according to an administration official.

 

The Foreign Influence Task Force (FITF), based in FBI headquarters, concurred with each of the assessments in the spreadsheet with a “no objection” designation, the documents state.

 

Many of the Americans were identified as potential candidates for defensive briefings, though the spreadsheets and documents found so far do not identify how many Americans ultimately were given such briefings.

 

In some ways, the Round River operation is a mirror opposite of the Russia collusion probe known as Crossfire Hurricane in which the FBI pursued unsubstantiated allegations spread by Democrats that Trump and his allies conspired with Vladimir Putin to hijack the 2016 election. In Round River, FBI analysts sought to dismiss significant evidence in the bureau's possession, including Hunter Biden's own laptop, pointing to possible corruption by the Bidens.

 

Documents released by the White House earlier this month exposed an investigation in 2017 codenamed “Oxferd Comma” alleging the newly elected president Trump may have been acting as a Russian asset when he fired then-Director James Comey even though the bureau’s own evidence overwhelmingly showed at the time there was no collusion with the Kremlin.

 

Remarkably, the effort to portray the Biden scandal as Russian disinformation came even though confidential human sources working for the FBI and other agencies began reporting a steady stream of concerns starting in 2015 that Ukraine was possibly targeting the future first family for influence, the memos show. The FBI has identified at least 14 informants who were providing derogatory information on the Bidens, according to an FBI letter made public Wednesday.

 

In that letter to the White House Government Transparency Task Force, FBI Director Kash Patel said the Foreign Influence Task Force was terminated on his watch and its activities are now under investigation.

 

He said he shared concerns cited in a 2025 Director of National Intelligence memo declassified on Wednesday that Round River was used as a political tool to neutralize an alleged corruption narrative about Biden, the Democrats' 2020 presidential nominee, rather than to address true national security threats.

TV personality Dr Phil has criticized the Pentagon’s decision to drop files pertaining to UFO activity.

 

While you probably never expected to read that line, this is no alternative reality, as Dr Phil slammed the White House for its latest release, claiming that it is not telling the full story.

 

This comes as the Department of War released its fifth batch of records on UFO files last Friday (August 7).

 

Earlier this year, President Donald Trump announced on his own social media platform Truth Social that these files would be released, writing:

However, it seems Dr Phil, whose real name is Phillip McGraw, wasn’t too impressed with what was released, arguing that the information was ‘filler’.

 

In a clip, he said: “I believe the president wants the truth out but somewhere between him saying ‘release it’ and it actually landing on a website, somebody’s deciding what we get to see and what stays locked up. I don’t know who that somebody is and neither do you.”

 

He went on to say: “If you’re really going to talk about disclosure, then start disclosing.”

 

This has prompted many people to take to the internet to share their own reactions, with one user writing on Reddit: “This is exactly what it is. Ive spent years of my life listening to witness accounts.

 

The reason the government will never come out 100% on disclosure is because of all the illegal things they did to cover it up for the past 50 years. There's several reasons why the government won't disclose 100%.”

 

Another said: “This is the first time I’ve ever said this, and it’s honestly not something I ever expected to say: DR. Phil killed it with this one.”

The lack of long-term planning was evident from day one. Days ago, the WSJ reported that Iran carried out more than 2,000 attacks using ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and high-precision aerial drones against targets in the Gulf.

 

The offensive managed to strike and severely damage at least 20 American military installations spread across 8 countries in the region, causing damages of at least 13 billion dollars.

 

Military bases became uninhabitable in the face of the Iranian onslaught, while the world felt the impact of Trump and Netanyahu’s war. A truce was then negotiated and put into effect, but Iran never accepted the terms for the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and this situation persists to this day.

 

I wrote some time ago that the cost of the war, added to aerial operations, defensive and offensive ammunition, damage to bases, and aircraft losses, already exceeded 120 billion dollars. If we add the material damages and economic losses of the Gulf countries, we will have a total figure in the range of 300 billion, not counting other global losses.

 

A defeat that Trump cannot change, even if he repeats the word victory every night on his social network. It was a war where all allies refused to get involved, an isolation felt even by remote countries that typically showed automatic alignment. Internally, there was a change of command and clear signs of excessive politicization.

 

But such an embarrassment did not stop there. It has now come to light that President Donald Trump carried out a top-secret plane-swapping operation, using a food truck as a disguise due to a threat of an attack from Iran.

 

The highly unusual maneuver took place in Ankara, Turkey, right after the NATO summit, but the details of the farce were revealed by the American press and confirmed by Trump himself.

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the goal was “maximum transparency.” A third batch followed in June. Congressional hearings had already forced whistleblowers into the open. The UAP Disclosure Act of 2025 was winding its way through committee.

The laughter had stopped.

 

Two months later, on 7 July, Hollywood released Black Box, a horror film about Vero Airlines Flight 298 from New Orleans to Seattle.

The passengers experience catastrophic electronic failures, mysterious illness, and then encounter alien forces at thirty thousand feet. The timing is more interesting than the film.

 

Eshed’s version of alien contact was fundamentally reassuring. His aliens were diplomats who signed contracts and ran a bureaucracy sophisticated enough to have a policy on premature disclosure.

Black Box offers the opposite. Its aliens are not interested in collaboration. There is no consent. There is only a metal tube at altitude, failing systems, and passengers discovering that whatever is out there does not have their interests at heart.

Where Eshed imagined a relationship, Black Box imagines a predator.

Black Box is a film about what happens when almost none of those precautions exist. Vero Airlines Flight 298 is an ordinary American domestic service. There is a federal air marshal on board, but she is overwhelmed before the threat is even understood.

There are no layered defences, no hardened protocols adequate to the situation. When catastrophe arrives, one armed officer is a single point of failure, not a security architecture.

The Israeli viewer watches this and recognises the premise immediately: it is the nightmare of the undefended aircraft, the scenario that El Al’s entire institutional culture was designed to prevent.

 

El Al was designed to counter hijackers and missiles, not tentacled entities from beyond the atmosphere. But the underlying logic is transferable.

Threats that seem improbable are not the same as threats that are impossible. States that take security seriously plan for the improbable. States that do not end up as horror films.

 

Israel now occupies both sides of the alien contact narrative simultaneously. It has the most senior official ever to claim cooperative extraterrestrial relations, and the most militarised aviation security of any commercial carrier on earth.

It has Eshed’s benign federation and El Al’s permanent war footing. It has the handshake and the holster.

New information about Aztec UFO crash released

The truth is out there, and a North Carolina couple has worked for decades trying to uncover it.

Scott and Suzanne Ramsey recently completed and released their third and final book about the purported Aztec UFO crash in March 1948. It is titled “It Came to Earth at Aztec, New Mexico Revealed: The Recovery of a UFO.”

“It’s a chunk of a book at 418 pages,” Suzanne said in a telephone interview with the Tri-City Record. “It is very comprehensive look at everything we’ve gotten over the years.”

 

The couple’s other books are “The Aztec Incident: Recovery at Hart Canyon,” published in January 2011, and “The Aztec UFO Incident: The Case, Evidence and Elaborate Cover-up of One of the Most Perplexing Crashes in History,” published in 2016.

In those books, the Ramseys just put out the information they had at the time, Suzanne said, adding the new book has “a lot of stuff that’s new. We have more interviews. … There’s more information that we need to understand.”

 

The information includes a “gadget” found at the crash site by Scott and analyzed through scientific testing.

“We found an item at the crash site, and we are having it analyzed,” Scott said. “It’s been analyzed twice already, but we’re having it analyzed again.”

An entire chapter, which includes color photos, was dedicated to the gadget in this new book.

 

“We have a lot of colored photographs and diagrams,” Suzanne said.

Scott Ramsey became interested in the UFO crash on a business trip to Farmington in the late 1980s. He was with a client testing a generator and overheard two men talking about their plans for Halloween weekend.

“One was going to hunt in Hart Canyon, out by the old crash site,” Scott said. “I asked what crash type. They said it was an old wife’s tale that something crashed out there.”

 

Scott asked for a map to the site and his research into the incident began.

“Everything I dug up on it said it was hoax. I thought how can it be a hoax when nobody ever heard of it,” Scott said. “It was written off to be a hoax, with a paper trail behind it.”

 

There were files on Aztec kept at Maxwell Air Force Base, but Inspection of Public Records Act requests either went unanswered, rejected or denied.

“There’s some really juicy documents down there. … The FBI has an amazing amount of documents on Aztec.

I’m hoping under this new Trump law they will free up a little more,” Scott said, adding he even made requests at the National Archives, but was told the documents were in Maryland not Washington, D.C.

“When you start having people slam the door in your face when you say you want these operation reports,” Scott said, “and they say they are not releasable to the public, if this thing is a scam or a hoax why not? That keeps me going.”

 

Scott helped the Aztec Library develop a UFO Symposium, which raised enough money to construct a new library, and that is how he met and married Suzanne.

Her family moved to Aztec when she was young, because her mother had read about the UFO crash in the 1950 book “Behind the Flying Saucers” by Frank Scully.

Incidentally, X-Files creator Chris Carter named character Dana Scully after Frank, and he wrote the Aztec crash into an episode.

Carter also reportedly has read the Ramsey’s books.

 

However, when the family arrived in Aztec no one would talk about the crash. “She started asking people, and people didn’t want to talk about it. She was so disappointed,” Suzanne said.

The crash has been a topic that many feared discussing. “It was worse than talking politics, religion or sports,” Scott said.

The Ramseys did get people to talk and many of those interviews are found in the book.

 

“We’ve met a lot of wonderful people who shared their stories – some were scared too. It’s a topic that up until recently was off base,” Suzanne said, adding that many “of the witnesses who never met each other had the same terminology or description.”

In the new book, “the story originates and is focused on Aztec, and there are parts of it with the documentation that take you all over the country,” Suzanne said, adding that after years of gathering information “we realize now that the world is more prepared for it.”

The Ramsey’s believe that the Aztec UFO crash is “a very special piece of history,” that needs to shared.

“We just put all our heart and soul into this book,” Suzanne said.

Billionaire Names The Office He Says Buried UFOs

Robert Bigelow, the aerospace founder who once ran the largest government-funded UAP investigation in United States history, has publicly accused the Pentagon’s current UAP office of working against disclosure rather than for it.

Speaking on episode 2 of the Bigelow Podcast with longtime investigative reporter George Knapp, Bigelow said that after a private meeting with President Trump, he came away believing that AARO, the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, was built as what he called a disguise and probably a fraudulent effort to squash disclosure.

 

According to the podcast, Bigelow drew a contrast between the Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s July 2021 assessment, which stated it could not rule out that these objects physically exist, and AARO’s first director Sean Kirkpatrick, who testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee in April 2023 that AARO had found no credible evidence of extraterrestrial activity or off-world technology.

Bigelow pointed to that shift in tone as evidence that something changed once AARO took over the investigation.

 

Later in the same conversation, Bigelow and Knapp discussed a separate claim involving a craft that reportedly crashed in Kazakhstan, which Russia is said to have used to reverse engineer a directed energy weapon.

Per the podcast, a senior source inside the Russian program brought this information to American intelligence. Bigelow connected this claim back to the Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program, the Defense Intelligence Agency contract he ran through his company, Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies, between 2008 and 2010, which he said produced roughly 7,500 pages of reports still largely unreleased to the public.

 

Separately, Secretary of State and acting National Security Adviser Marco Rubio addressed UAP on the Katie Miller Podcast, stating that he has handed off the issue to someone else in the administration and that even he is told the details are classified.

Rubio referenced a colleague by first name only, and reporting from Liberation Times identifies White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller as the official currently overseeing the administration’s UAP work.

Rubio also acknowledged that his own UAP advocacy as a senator doubled as a way to redirect reporters from political questions, a comment that adds context to his earlier 2023 statements to NewsNation, in which he said whistleblowers, including Navy pilots, admirals, and generals, had come to his committee seeking protection.

WASHINGTON — A former Southern Poverty Law Center finance officer was charged Wednesday for her role in secretly paying informants who participated in white supremacist groups over the past decade.

Heidi Beirich made an initial appearance in federal court, according to her defense attorney Michael Proctor. CNN reported that she had been arrested earlier Wednesday.

A 26-page superseding indictment naming Beirich, who was first unmasked by The Post in June, was later filed in the Middle District of Alabama.

“There is a new indictment that includes the former CFO of SPLC,” Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed at an unrelated news conference at DOJ headquarters, adding that there had been “an arrest made,” though Beirich’s attorney said she appeared voluntarily in court.

Beirich was one of several SPLC leaders accused of opening up bank accounts with fake company names to funnel payments toward various hate group leaders.

Her identification came from details in an indictment brought against the left-wing group out of the Northern District of Alabama.

What Scott Bessent said about the Strait of Hormuz

 

The Strait of Hormuz has given Tehran one of the most powerful pieces of economic leverage in the world.

 

On Aug. 8, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent sat down for an interview and saidthat leverage is about to disappear.And one oil major is already positioned at the center of the plan he described.

 

“The Strait is never going back to the way it was because the Iranians have used, or tried to use it, as a choke point,” Bessent said. “What we are going to see over the next two years, the Strait is going to become irrelevant. It is going to become just another body of water, and I would say that more than 50 or 70% of the energy that moves through the Strait now is going to go through underground pipelines”

 

Chevron (CVX) is participating in feasibility studies for the Haditha-Baniyas pipeline. The route runs from Iraq’s oil network at Haditha to the Syrian port of Baniyas on the Mediterranean coast.

 

Iraqi oil producers would have a second export option. They would not need to send barrels through the Persian Gulf and Hormuz.

The Kirkuk-Baniyas pipeline ran through Syria to the Mediterranean decades ago, but it stopped operating.

Chevron’s financials do not depend on this pipeline. The project is an addition, not a foundation. Washington is actively pushing alternative Hormuz routes. Chevron is inside one of them.
