Albert Heijn begins restocking as hack traced to foreign servers

Albert Heijn has started restocking its supermarkets and restarting some IT systems, two days after a “cyber incident” took down many of its supply chains.

Parent company Ahold Delhaize said on Tuesday it was carrying out a “controlled restart of certain systems” and had so far found no indication that customer data had been stolen. It has not said which systems are back up.

Sources in the security sector told broadcaster NOS that Albert Heijn had identified suspicious attack traffic on its systems. According to NOS, the chain’s security staff appear to have switched systems off as the traffic came in, preventing the hackers from getting deeper into the network.

Foreign servers

The company knows that several servers were used in the attack, in the US, Poland, Moldova and Turkey, the sources said. The location of a server doesn’t mean that that is where the attacks are coming from, as traffic can be routed through other countries.

Albert Heijn’s investigation also suggests that servers belonging to Ahold Delhaize’s US arm may be involved. “That could mean the hackers broke into those servers and used them to attack Dutch systems,” cybersecurity expert Pim Takkenberg told NOS.

Another expert, Joey Fennis, said hackers were clearly involved, but it was not yet possible to say what, if any, damage it had caused. “It may also be that Albert Heijn detected them in time,” he said.

Albert Heijn said in a written statement that it was taking the incident “very seriously”, but could not go into technical details at this point.

Shop impacts

Work at some of Albert Heijn’s six distribution centres in the Netherlands stopped completely on Monday, leaving gaps on shelves. The chain now says several centres are operating, and it is laying on extra deliveries.

Albert Heijn says some shelves may stay empty, like fruit, vegetables and other fresh produce. Online ordering and deliveries are still not possible, and customer service is still unreachable. Chemist chain Etos and off-licence chain Gall & Gall are also affected.

Other countries

Belgian supermarket chain Delhaize, also owned by Ahold Delhaize, reported IT problems on Monday. Albert Heijn’s stores in Belgium are supplied from the Tilburg distribution centre, and the chain told broadcaster VRT the impact there was limited.

The incident came on the same weekend as a separate cyberattack on hundreds of supermarkets in France. There, hackers remotely forced refrigeration systems to defrost, and chains including Intermarché and Coopérative U had to throw away fresh and frozen food.

An Ahold Delhaize spokesperson told news agency Reuters there was no evidence of a link between the two attacks.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson calls out Labor government over terror laws after accused terrorist granted bail and NDIS

One Nation has lashed out at the Albanese government over terror laws after an accused terrorist was granted bail and given access to NDIS.

Mohamed Musse Bakit, 65, was recently released on bail by the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court after being charged with five offences.

The offences include membership of a terrorist organisation and possessing violent extremist material.

Despite facing multiple terror-related charges, the court granted bail after hearing he had been approved for National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) support.

In response, Ms Hanson has called for tougher counter terrorism laws, such as her unsuccessful Protecting Australians from Foreign Terrorist Fighters Bill.

The One Nation bill was recently rejected by a senate inquiry, which said the laws would not be held up in court.

On Tuesday morning, Flanagan went online to reveal her Ojibwe name and its exact meaning before closing with a shot against Trump.

Missouri Judge LOCKS UP Two Children in Juvenile Detention After They Refuse to Go with Their Mother — Federal Appeals Court Strips His Immunity Defense: “Judges Do Not Do Double Duty as Jailers”

A Missouri judge who ordered two children locked inside juvenile detention cells because they refused to leave a courthouse with their mother has been dealt a humiliating defeat in federal court.

On Tuesday, October 13, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit ruled against Missouri Circuit Judge Eric Eighmy, concluding that his outrageous handling of a family custody dispute violated the children’s clearly established constitutional rights.

The decision, written by Circuit Judge David Stras, upheld a jury’s $10,000 damages award to the children, along with a staggering $326,637.22 in attorney fees and costs.

And the reason for the children’s detention?They simply refused to leave with their mother following a custody hearing.

The parents and their attorneys reached a temporary agreement allowing the children to stay with their mother. However, Kadan and Brooklyn Rockett, who advanced to the semifinals of America’s Got Talent in 2016 with their jaw-dropping magic act and have appeared in Hollywood films,wanted to remain with their father to avoid disrupting their budding entertainment careers.

They were never parties to the case and never entered the courtroom. After the hearing, they argued with their mother in the courthouse hallway.

Judge Eighmy, according to the lawsuit and later findings, removed his robe, intervened, lectured the children on the “evils of Hollywood,” and grew frustrated when they stood firm.

He then personally escorted them to the juvenile detention division, stood by while they removed clothing and belongings, and had them locked in separate cells for roughly an hour.

He threatened to send them into foster care where they would never see their family again. Only after that pressure did the children agree to go with their mother.

The father sued under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 for unreasonable seizure and related constitutional violations. Judge Eighmy claimed absolute judicial immunity, the powerful shield that normally protects judges from personal lawsuits even for erroneous or malicious decisions made in their judicial capacity.

The 8th Circuit, in an opinion by Judge David R. Stras joined by Chief Judge Lavenski R. Smith and Judge Jonathan A. Kobes, rejected that defense for the personal jailing.

In the 12-page ruling in Brooklyn Rockett and Kadan Rockett v. Eric Eighmy, Judge Stras wrote:

“When Judge Eric Eighmy had courthouse officers lock two children in holding cells because they refused to leave with their mother following a custody hearing, he violated their clearly established Fourth Amendment rights.”

The court rejected Eighmy’s qualified immunity defense and dismissed his renewed attempt to invoke judicial immunity on procedural grounds. An earlier Eighth Circuit decision had already rejected his judicial immunity argument concerning the detention.

Stras wrote that the children “were never parties, they never stepped foot in the courtroom, and Judge Eighmy personally locked them up himself. We have been unable to find any case that extends judicial immunity so far.”

The panel stressed that while judges may order an officer or bailiff to escort someone, “judges do not do double duty as jailers.”

Judges possess substantial authority to resolve legal disputes and enforce lawful court orders.But that authority does not give them unlimited power to personally detain people who frustrate them.

Stras delivered another memorable warning:

“In short, rough justice does not trump the Constitution.”

Personally marching the kids to cells, watching them strip down, and returning later to release them took any arguable judicial act “too far.”

After the children prevailed at trial, the jury awarded each of them $5,000 in damages.

The district court subsequently awarded another $326,637.22 in attorney fees and costs.

Eighmy challenged both awards.

The appeals court rejected those challenges, explaining that federal civil rights litigation does not require attorney fees to be proportional to the damages awarded.

The court also dismissed his renewed judicial immunity argument because he had failed to preserve it properly after trial.

The total judgment stands at $336,637.22.

It sounds like a rejected script for a James Bond movie. An obscure German aristocrat with a historic royal title plans to overthrow the government in a violent coup, freeing it from the supposed tyranny of the deep state.

But that is, German prosecutors say, exactly what the self-styled Heinrich XIII Prince of Reuss was doing until he was arrested along with 24 alleged far-right co-conspirators Wednesday as part of the largest police counterterrorism operation in German history.

Little is known of the terrorist group that, prosecutors alleged, had access to weapons and training, had recruited from the armed forces and the police and had drawn up detailed plans to install a new government.

The group, part of the Reichsbürger, or Reich Citizens, movement, which rejects the legitimacy of the German state after Kaiser Wilhelm II stood down in 1918, was planning to install Heinrich as the new head of state, authorities say.

Pictures showed him being led away in handcuffs Wednesday by police officers in balaclavas as his and his fellow plotters’ hopes were dashed.

Here is what we know about the man who would’ve been kaiser.

Germany has been a republic for more than 100 years and is now the most powerful democracy in Europe. It has no actual princes or kings, but as with many other former monarchies across Europe, some aristocrats with hereditary royal titles still choose to use them.

Heinrich XIII, 71, belongs to the House of Reuss, an ancient royal lineage that ruled parts of what is now Thuringia in central Germany for hundreds of years until 1918. It is now one of Germany’s 16 federal states.

Reuss is just one of the many branches of German royalty, many of which have familial links across the rest of Europe, some of them to the British royal family.

In a quirk dating to the 12th century, male heirs to the Reuss throne are all called Heinrich, followed by a number. That’s in tribute to Heinrich VI, who reigned as the king of Germany and Holy Roman Emperor until his death in 1197.

Heinrich was arrested at his home in an upmarket district of Frankfurt on Wednesday.

Ostthüringer Zeitung, a local newspaper, reported that police also searched his hunting lodge, a small neo-Gothic castle near the town of Bad Lobenstein in Thuringia, originally built in the 19th century for his ancestor Heinrich LXXII.

NBC News has not verified the reports.

Heinrich may claim the hereditary title, but the House of Reuss is less than pleased with him.

Heinrich XIV, a distant relative who acts as the head of the house and its spokesman, told the German broadcaster MRD on Wednesday that he was shocked by the news and that he hadn’t spoken to Heinrich XIII for a decade.

“Of course it rubs off catastrophically on the family,” he said. “I believe we’ve been a tolerant, cosmopolitan dynasty for 850 years in eastern Thuringia, and now we are all around the world, all the way to America, [we’re] ‘terrorists’ and ‘reactionaries’ — it’s really horrible.”

Heinrich XIII, arrested Wednesday wearing a green blazer, brown trousers, a blue shirt and a colored silk scarf, is described in German media profiles as an entrepreneur. His personal website vaguely says he offers “coordination of business interests.”

He is accused of contacting representatives of the Russian Federation both in Russia and in Germany in the hope of winning support to overthrow the Berlin government, although prosecutors said there was no evidence Moscow officials reacted positively to the request.

The House of Reuss disowned Heinrich XIII even before he was arrested. In August, the house distanced itself from his views, with Heinrich XIV describing him as a “confused old man” who “is now caught up in conspiracy theory misconceptions.”

Those views are now under intense scrutiny.

In short, Heinrich XIII argues that Germany as we know it doesn’t exist.

Should a coup attempt eventually happen — and German authorities say they expect more arrests in the coming days — it wouldn’t be the first attempt to force a return to Germany’s imperial past.

The Kapp Putsch, or coup, in 1920 tried but failed to overthrow the government in Berlin, which its supporters saw as illegitimate. More than 100 years on, that feeling is very much alive among some right-wing conspiracists in Germany.

Delivering a rambling speech titled “Why blue-blooded elite became servants” at the World Web Forum in Zurich in 2019, Heinrich presented a rose-tinted picture of monarchical Germany at the end of World War I.

“If something wasn’t going well, you just went to the prince,” he said. “Who are you supposed to turn to today? Your parliamentarian, the local, federal or E.U. level? Good luck!”

He argued that his family was unjustly deposed and cited an antisemitic conspiracy theory about the role of Jewish bankers in the removal of European kingdoms.

Summing up the Reichsbürger credo, he said: “Ever since Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945, it has never been sovereign again. It was made into an administrative structure of the Allies … a vassal state.”

With some historical symmetry, Heinrich was arrested almost 100 years after the Beer Hall Putsch, a failed coup by Hitler’s Nazi Party in Munich on Nov. 8-9, 1923.

Hitler failed and was sentenced to five years in prison. He served nine months but this was a period in which he wrote his manifesto-cum-memoir “Mein Kampf.” The incident helped bring the Nazis to wider public attention and laid the groundwork for what was to come.

Bank of America was hit with a massive $1.2 billion fine over anti-money laundering violations.

The Treasury Department announced the record enforcement against Bank of America on Tuesday afternoon:

The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) assessed a $1.2 billion penalty for the Bank’s failure to mitigate and report priority national security risks, including Chinese Money Laundering Networks and illicit finance along the southwest border.

The OCC assessed a $750 million civil money penalty for the Bank’s deficient and ineffective BSA/AML (anti-money laundering) compliance program.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced an $11.6 million settlement agreement with the Bank over apparent violations of numerous sanctions programs, including on Iran, Russia, narcotics, and global terrorism.

“Financial institutions are on the front lines of protecting our economic and national security,” said Secretary Scott Bessent.

“When a bank of this size fails to meet its anti-money laundering and sanctions obligations, the consequences extend far beyond its own walls, exposing the entire U.S. financial system to significant illicit finance risks,” Bessent said.

“Today’s actions send a clear message that even the biggest financial institutions are not above the law,” Bessent added.

The Treasury Department announced approximately $1.21 billion in penalties against Bank of America overlongstanding anti-money laundering failures and U.S. sanctions violations.

Regulators found the bank failed to adequately investigate trillions of dollars in potentially suspicious transactions despite knowing about significant compliance deficiencies.

The action includes the largest penalty in the history of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and the third-largest in the history of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

FinCEN assessed a $1.2 billion penalty against the nation’s second-largest bank, which includes credit for a $750 million civil penalty imposed by the OCC. A separate $11.6 million settlement with the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) brings the combined penalties to approximately $1.21 billion.

According to Treasury, Bank of America failed to report more than $5 billion in suspicious transactions on time, including more than $1 billion in activity involving national security risks such as Chinese money laundering networks, fraud and potential trade-based money laundering connected to the southwest border.

President Trump released a statement on Truth Social this afternoon, blasting Ilhan Omar for claiming a net worth of over $30 million but later revising the number to $100,000 or less as the Justice Department probes her citizenship and finances.

Omar previously revealed in a financial disclosure a net worth of $38 million but later claimed that it was an “accounting error” and that she is actually worth around $80,000.

“Could it be that her highly paid accountant actually reported the money that was stolen from her fraudulent activities in Minnesota? Would something like that be possible? Do you think the accountant actually gave the right number the first time, 30 Million Dollars, and then she was forced to disavow because she never would have been able to report where that much money came from?” Trump questioned.

“She must have freaked out when she saw that money!Where did her house come from, where did her cars come from, and what about her lovely place in Washington, D.C.?I didn’t know that Congressmen and women made that kind of money, but I do know her husband, according to information and belief, makes almost nothing, so it couldn’t have come from him.”

This comes after Omar’s Washington, DC home was raided early on Monday morning in a criminal fraud investigation that is looking at Omar’s immigration paperwork, which was filled out by her late father when she was a teen. Investigators were seen hauling boxes of evidence out of her home yesterday.

Officials believe thatshe may have lied on her papers, constituting fraudulent citizenship. Border Czar Tom Homan and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin have both suggested that she lied and could be deported.

The Trump Administration is now signaling that Omar committed several crimes in addition to fraudulent citizenship.

Judge Jeanine Pirro went on Fox earlier and confirmed that the Justice Department is looking into her finances.

“They got a warrant signed by a federal judge. So, you’ve got the executive branch through HSI going to a federal judge who is cognizant of the Fourth Amendment rights of any target, who said, ‘ you have the right to search this person’s house.,'” she said.

“Based upon that execution of that warrant, we will see what comes of it.”

Pirro added that “there is no question that that judge would not have signed that warrant unless there was probable cause— and probably more than that given the individual that’s involved, and given the fact that we’re in the nation’s capital with judges in the nation’s capital.”

Pirro added that there are “several investigations going on,” suggesting that the civil or criminal immigration issues or financial crimes may be involved.

I can tell you that is the subject of an investigation as well,” Pirro said of Omar’s financial disclosures and $30 million net worth.

Trump responded in a Truth Social post, suggesting financial crimes along with immigration crimes.

“How many people did she illegally bring into our Country from Somalia? America wants answers, and we want them, NOW!” Trump said.

Pope Leo diagnosed with lung cancer after undergoing surgery, Vatican says

Pope Leo XIV's surgery confirmed that he has lung cancer, and he had the lower lobe of his right lung removed, the Vatican said Tuesday.

The tests confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, the Vatican said in a medical bulletin after the surgery. It said the diagnosis had been suspected by preoperative tests and was confirmed during surgery.

The 71-year-old pontiff was in the operating room for about 3 hours, the statement said. The surgery itself lasted approximately 90 minutes. "The surgery was successful, and there were no complications," the statement said.

"To ensure a radical resection, the lower lobe of the right lung was removed using a video-assisted technique," the Vatican said in a statement. "Intraoperative histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma, as suspected from pre-operative tests."

According to the Vatican, the pope "regained consciousness normally" following the procedure and was then taken back to his room on the 10th floor of Rome's Gemelli Hospital.

In its statement, the Vatican did not disclose what stage the cancer was in or whether the cancer may have spread. It also did not detail what further procedures the pope may have to undergo.

"The Vatican tends to keep these things under wraps, so there'll be a lot of reading between the lines to try and detect what is the state of the pope's health," Candida Moss, the Edward Cadbury professor of theology at the University of Birmingham in England, told CBS News.

Leo is known for living an active and healthy lifestyle, including swimming and playing tennis, all factors that likely worked in his favor going into the surgery.

Leo had walked into Gemelli Hospital through the main entrance earlier in the day and waved to dozens of well-wishers who had gathered to greet him. The Vatican said the surgery was performed by a team led by Gemelli's chief thoracic surgeon, Dr. Stefano Margaritora.

The Vatican on Monday canceled all Leo's audiences through Oct. 20. There was no word on whether Leo would be able to keep his planned trip to South America next month.

The typical recommendation for a procedure of this kind is to avoid air travel for about three weeks, which would put the pope right up against the start of that trip, which is scheduled for Nov. 6.

Moss told CBS News that Vatican protocol calls for the pope's cardinals and aides to step in and take up many of his duties as needed.

"We should also expect that, inasmuch as is possible, Pope Leo is going to continue to work," Moss said. "We have a long tradition of popes — not just Pope Francis, but also Pope John Paul II, who had Parkinson's for 10 years — who continued to remain as active as they could, and as active in Catholic liturgies as they could, right up until the end of their tenures."

While Gemelli has a specific papal apartment that past popes have used, complete with a private chapel on the 10th floor, Leo will actually be staying in a nearby room since the papal apartment is undergoing renovations, according to the Vatican press office.

The Vatican had announced on Sunday that Leo would undergo surgery after a nodular lesion was found in his lung. A lung nodule is a small abnormal area measuring less than 1.2 inches that sometimes appears on a CT scan of the chest or abdomen. A nodule can be benign or malignant.

"The doctors believe it's best to take action, so, following their advice, I've decided to have surgery to remove it," Leo said in remarks during his Sunday noon blessing. "Thank you for your spiritual support, and I entrust myself to your prayers."

The Labour Party-run British government reportedly provided funding used to train leftist activists to prevent Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party or the Conservatives from coming to power and to stifle the public’s concerns over mass migration.

In the wake of the 2024 Southport Riots, which broke out after a second-generation Rwandan teen went on a mass stabbing at a children’s dance party, leaving three dead and ten others injured, then-Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner announced a £15 million ($20m) “community cohesion” fund supposedly intended to prevent more disorder.

“In the immediate aftermath of the unrest, I was heartened to see the extent to which communities so quickly came together to support one another and their local areas, she said at the time. “This new Community Recovery Fund will support the work that is already under way and ensure that communities have the resources they need to rebuild.”

However, according to a report from London’s Daily Telegraph, some of the money from the fund was channeled through Labour-run city councils into left-wing political projects, including the training of activists by groups such as the School of Organising, which was reportedly founded by former members of the far-left cancel culture Hope Not Hate group.

The broadsheet reported that materials produced for the training sessions included instructions on how to convince voters to reject Reform UK leader Nigel Farage and the “Tory-Right”, while coaching activists up on strategies to shift working-class communities away from voting for right-wing parties.

One training session reportedly told attendees that “our people (the working classes) are voting Reform UK in the belief that migrants are the problem,” while “toxic forces are asserting a narrative that prioritises the interests of straight, white, men.”

The activists were informed of the “vulnerability of working class communities to far-Right, alt-Right and Tory-Right narratives of division and blame” which included claims that “migrants put strain on underfunded services and are willing to work for lower pay”.

Meanwhile, the lectures are said to have taken aim at specific British politicians, including Nigel Farage, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and ex-Home Secretary Suella Braverman, who were described as being “symptoms of the same disease” as President Donald Trump, Dutch Party For Freedom leader Geert Wilders, French National Rally leader Marine Le Pen, Indian PM Modi, and anti-grooming gang activist Tommy Robinson.

Mr Farage was reportedly described in another publicly-funded leftist training effort as “a classic authoritarian populist” who is intent on “undermining democracy”.

MI5 chief Ken McCallum has urged the public not to exaggerate the impact of alleged Russian attempts to influence the outcome of the UK’s 2016 Brexit referendum.

McCallum’s comments came after some pro-Brexit politicians accused Prime Minister Andy Burnham of questioning the legitimacy of the vote by claiming it was “clear” that Moscow had interfered. Russia has consistently denied seeking to meddle in British domestic politics, including the 2016 referendum.

“There is a really important difference between interference attempted and outcome swayed … It’s quite important to focus on the difference between what may have been attempted and what actually resulted,” the UK spy chief said on Tuesday, as quoted by the Guardian.

McCallum suggested that “Russian trolls”would “be delighted because they are front page news again despite the comparative unimpressiveness of what they do at all points along the journey.”

“I am a little bit anxious that we don’t play into our adversaries’ hands by making these trolls look 10ft tall,” he said.

Without providing supporting data, the MI5 chief claimed that Russian media outlets, including RT and Sputnik, “came in pretty strongly around the referendum,” and that “there was a certain amount of interference attempted through trolls and bots and so forth.”

In 2016, the UK voted to leave the EU despite the government campaigning to remain. The unexpected result prompted Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron to resign.

Appearing on The Rest Is Politics podcast over the weekend, Burnham said, “I asked the question coming to Downing Street, was there interference in the 2016 referendum from Russia? And I’ve had the clear answer that yes, there was.” According to Reuters, he did not provide evidence of the alleged interference attempts.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who was a leading figure in the Leave campaign in 2016, called Burnham “a liar.”

“There was no Russian interference. And the Russia hoax has run all the way through this,” Farage said.

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenochaccused the prime minister of having “implied that the referendum result was illegitimate because of Russian interference.”

Following the backlash, the government said Burnham “absolutely accepts the referendum result.”

Bomb threat grounds second Delta plane from New York to Tel Aviv in one day

A Delta Air Lines plane scheduled to depart from New York for Israel has yet to take off from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York following a bomb threat. Flight DL234 was scheduled to depart at 10:40 p.m. Israel time.

The aircraft was denied clearance for takeoff after police received a phone call claiming that a bomb had been planted on board. Authorities suspect that the caller may be the same individual who earlier claimed that a bomb had been placed on a Delta flight that landed at Ben-Gurion Airport on Tuesday morning. That aircraft was searched, and the incident ended without any unusual findings.

The flight, currently on the runway, will be permitted to depart only after US security authorities complete their inspections and Israeli security officials and the Transportation Ministry grant clearance.

A Bertelsmann Foundation survey indicates that a majority of respondents across the bloc oppose granting Kiev an accelerated path to accession

More than half of EU citizens oppose fast-tracking Ukraine’s accession to the bloc, according to a new survey by the Bertelsmann Foundation.

The Germany-based foundation published its latest study exploring the sentiment within the bloc on Tuesday. The study was conducted through the foundation’s Eupinions public opinion research tool this June and sampled 16,795 people across all EU member states, as well as a further 2,153 people in Ukraine.

The latest survey has shown the continuing decline of support for a fast-tracked accession of Ukraineinto the bloc, which has fallen below 50% for the first time since the pollster began measuring the trend. The idea was overwhelmingly supported at the very beginning of the Ukraine conflict, with some 6% of respondents backing it in March 2022. It has declined over the years and now measures only 47%, with 53% opposed to Ukraine’s accession.

The idea of EU enlargement through accepting any new members whatsoever has shown a similar trend. While some 73% supported the expansion in March 2022, now only 48% of respondents spoke favorably of it. In contrast, the idea of joining the EU remains very popular in Ukraine, with some 83% backing it, with the same percentage supporting the general idea of the bloc’s expansion, the poll indicates.

The EU and the Ukrainian citizens have also displayed polar opinions on the potential benefits and implications of the country’s potential accession. Only 36% of Europeans believe Ukraine joining the bloc would create more economic opportunities, against some 74% of Ukrainians thinking so. Moreover, only some 38% of EU citizens expressed readiness to endure “short-term economic costs” for their countries for the sake of Ukraine’s accession, while 67% of Ukrainians said they would accept such hardships to join the bloc.

While joining the bloc has been a key talking point for pro-Western Ukrainian politicians for decades, the process only somewhat picked up after the escalation of the conflict with Russia. Still, the bloc appears to be reluctant to grant Kiev any exemptions and somehow facilitate its potential accession.

Earlier this month, the EU rejected Vladimir Zelensky’s demand that Ukraine be admitted to the bloc by January 2027. Enlargement CommissionerMarta Kos said the deadline was clearly “not possible,” and Kiev must meet all the requirements for the “merit-based” membership.

Russia Strikes Ukraine’s Rail Network and Drone Warehouses

Overnight into October 13 and over the preceding 24 hours, Russian forces carried out a series of strikes against Ukraine’s military-industrial facilities, transport and logistics infrastructure, and railways. The main targets were in Kyiv and Kyiv Region, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and the Mykolaiv, Rivne, and Vinnytsia regions. Ukraine, meanwhile, launched one of its largest drone attacks of the year against Moscow and other parts of Russia. According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, 604 Ukrainian drones were destroyed over Russian territory.

Russian Strikes on Ukraine

Kyiv Region

Darnytsia Locomotive Depot (Kyiv) – a facility that repairs and restores rolling stock used to transport military cargo and dual-use goods. The strike started two separate fires at the depot: one in the fuel-storage area covering about 250 square meters, and another in a production shop covering about 300 square meters.

The Pulp Mill Print facility (Kyiv) – a production site where, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, production of long-range missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles was organized. After the strike, the fire covered roughly 8,000 square meters. Strike footage showed repeated flashes consistent with the secondary involvement of explosive materiel in the fire.

Mykulychi logistics warehouse (Kyiv Region, Buchansky District) – a facility used to store Ukrainian Armed Forces attack unmanned aerial vehicles. The strike was carried out using a Geran-5 jet-powered UAV. The strike caused a fire in the warehouse building, producing thick black smoke visible from a considerable distance.

Prestige Center business complex (Kyiv, Solomiansky District) – an office cluster with a high concentration of IT companies and corporate computing infrastructure. Its tenants include Miratech, ZEO Alliance, AMIND, and B. Braun Medical Ukraine. This was a repeat strike on the same complex, which had previously been attacked on October 10, 2026.

Mykolaiv Region

Nova Poshta logistics center (Ternivka) – a facility used, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, to store dual-use cargo intended to supply the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Unmanned aerial vehicle warehouse (Meshkovo-Pohorilove)

Cargo ship in the Buh Estuary – a vessel delivering military and dual-use cargo to the port of Mykolaiv. Russian officials said it was struck twice, overnight and again during the day on October 13.

Kharkiv Region

Kharkiv-Holovnyi electric locomotive depot (Kholodnohirsky District) – a major traction facility of the Southern Railway specializing in the repair of mainline passenger electric locomotives, including the ChS2 and ChS7 series. Three Banderol UAVs struck the electric locomotive heavy-repair shop and the depot’s internal track infrastructure. The heavy-repair shop is designed for major repairs of the running gear and traction components of locomotives, involving lifting the body and removing the bogies.
