Found this article about Pell. Sounds a lot like what happened to Kavanagh. Another interesting thing I noticed, not sure if relevant, "At the time, there was already a creeping sense that Pell, during the tenure of his investigation into the Vatican bank (also known as the Institute for the Works of Religion, or IOR), had quickly become persona non grata." IOR? Hmm.

 

It looks like it might be a setup to get rid of this guy. I wonder what he found out about the Vatican bank. Godfather III.

This story describes how Santa's "scout elves" hide in people's homes to watch over events. Once everyone goes to bed, the scout elf flies back to the North Pole to report to Santa the activities, good and bad, that have taken place throughout the day. Before the family wakes up each morning, the scout elf flies back from the North Pole and hides. By hiding in a new spot each morning around the house, the scout elf plays an ongoing game of hide and seek with the family. The Elf on the Shelf explains that scout elves get their magic by being named and being loved by a child. In the back of each book, families have an opportunity to write their elf's name and the date that they adopted it. Once the elf is named, the scout elf receives its special Christmas magic, which allows it to fly to and from the North Pole.

 

The book tells how the magic might disappear if the scout elf is touched, so the rule for The Elf on the Shelf states, "There's only one rule that you have to follow, so I will come back and be here tomorrow: Please do not touch me. My magic might go, and Santa won't hear all I've seen or I know." Although families are told not to touch their scout elf, they can speak to it and tell it all their Christmas wishes so that it can report back to Santa accurately.

 

The story ends on Christmas Day with the elf leaving to stay with Santa for the rest of the year until the following Christmas season.

As a parent, I consider Christmas the most joyful of all the holidays, but not for the reasons you might think. The presents are fine and the food is nice. And who doesn't love a thoughtfully bedazzled tree, slowly dying in their living room? But the real reason Christmas is great is because I can hold it over my kids. "I'm calling Santa to cancel your presents" is the threat that keeps on giving.

 

And the tiny cheerleader for this grand parental tradition? Elf on the Shelf. If you've never heard of Elf on the Shelf, it's not because your parents stiffed you; it's because it was only first brought to market in 2005. It's a plush toy that's also a spy, though I'll admit I only discovered the espionage part after I'd already sprung for Santa's Secret Agent in Target late last year and belatedly ran a background check.

 

Elves are supposed to watch your kids from a high vantage point in the home and tattle to Santa if they see any naughty behavior. But they don't have iPhones or email, so to make their report they must commute to the North Pole. Every. Single. Night. It's a system as inefficient as it is creepy. And each morning, your offspring must find their elf, which, having trudged from your house to Santa's and back again, will have repositioned itself somewhere new in your house.

Now for really weird part: Children are not under any circumstances allowed to touch Elf on the Shelf as this, my dears, will switch off their magic. Well now that just seems cruel. Our elf doesn't get a salary or even so much as removable mittens and now we're depriving him of hugs? No way. And penalizing a child for touching a treasured toy? Insanity. But with a few tweaks to the rules, I could actually see this ritual being an effective tool in the loving domicile/juvenile correctional facility that I run out of my apartment.

 

And so, Elfie (there seemed little reason to give our stuffed serf a more imaginative name) sits, as low-maintenance as can be, and surveils my kids, from whatever piece of furniture he hauled up on the night before.

 

With Elfie's help, I reckon my husband and I squeeze about a month of improved conduct from our brood. Come late November, coats and shoes are miraculously placed in closets rather than flung on the floor. And everyone's desperate to help their sibling load the dishwasher, all in full view of our adorable in-house spy.

 

Adding an Elf on the Shelf to the Yuletide build-up has felt like a very natural upping of the ante. Traditionally, we begin to make Christmas-themed threats in March and they only taper off in late January. We use our kids' fear of losing Santa's offerings right up until the point when they depreciate into a sad heap of warped plastic. And we feel little to no guilt about doing so.

 

Elf on the Shelf may only be 13, but the way I see it, it's the continuation of a distinguished historical tradition. Mainland European parents have been using Christmas folklore to terrify kids for centuries (see: Krampus), so why not, belatedly, take a delicious slice of the fear pie for ourselves? I can tell you now that if the toy department of big box store ever tries to woo me with a Christmassy half-demon, half-goat and the promise of well-behaved kids, I'll bite. Because as dutiful, caring parents, the first thing we ask in any situation that involves us handing over money for a plaything is: "How will this benefit me?" Too noisy and it clashes with my sofa? No thanks. Terrifying and morally bankrupt but will make my child nice? Yeah, go on then.

The naysayers will tell you that Elf on the Shelf is an evil, commercialized addition to Christmas. But if you're already celebrating a gift-driven holiday where a booming white guy controls the economy and metes out joy, you can't suddenly start objecting when cunning entrepreneurs crank out clever bolt-on items. Before you dismiss Elf of the Shelf as sinister garbage, remember it's also an invaluable — and festive — parenting tool.

We see this all the time in attacks on President Trump by the media, by Never Trumpers, by globalists and by academics.

 

Mass immigration has dramatically changed the demography of the UK and other European countries, as well as the US, shifting the electoral balance in major cities. But the culprits of the demise of national identity in society are not the incomers but a middle class so ashamed of their country that any expression of national sentiment is now perceived as ‘far right,’ xenophobic or racist.

 

This pejorative use of the label ‘right’ is a convenient means of vilifying opposition to the prevailing set of liberal opinions, now literally policed as ‘hate crime’.

 

Students are more likely to see themselves on the left of the political spectrum, but scratch below the surface and you will find that the fault-line is not really socialism versus capitalism. They won’t get their smart phones or skinny lattes from nationalised industry. Unlike the radical campus activists of the late 1960s, today’s students are in fact very pro-establishment.

 

The social divide, which in the USA is openly discussed as a ‘culture war’, was perhaps best conceptualised by David Goodhart in his book The Road to Somewhere.

 

On one side are Anywheres, the graduate class who populate the upper echelons of our political and cultural institutions, and who dominate professions such as teaching. Upwardly mobile, they have little sense of belonging to their hometown or country. These rootless ‘citizens of the world’ contrast starkly with Somewheres, who value their families, community bonds and nationhood, and who see the impact of globalisation as a threat to their culture.

 

You are more likely to find Somewheres in the pub, and Anywheres in an expensive, trendy ethnic urban restaurant.

 

The Somewheres are more numerous – they are the ordinary people.

 

Are they left or right? Ask them about public services and unscrupulous business practices and they will espouse state provision and regulation. But ask them about Queen and country, or the extremes of identity politics (such as transgenderism) and they will appear more conservative than progressive. Indeed, Somewheres are a mixture of working class Labour voters and ‘Middle England’ Tories.

Trump sprang three traps on Pelosi and Schumer yesterday

President Trump clearly shocked House speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer yesterday with his televising of the Oval Office sit-down over his demand for $5 billion in funding for border security, including funding of critical mileage for his border wall. Knowing well that Pelosi had already vowed publicly that "transparency and openness" would characterize the Democrat-run House starting next month, her plaintive request to speak in private scored points for Trump and revealed her hypocrisy before any substance at all was considered.

 

The remarkable body language during the meeting tells the story of Trump's dominance. Here is the full video of the press gaggle, via Grabien:

That was merely the first of three traps Trump had prepared for the Democrats' congressional leadership.

 

Trump's second trap is his bold declaration of ownership of any "government shutdown." Democrats have convinced themselves that what is called a "shutdown," but really means furloughing non-essential federal workers, is a tragedy, a scar on the nation's psyche. The fact that federal workers are now a major and solid constituency for Democrats skews their perception of the public's concern. Aside from canceling sleigh rides in national parks and other such photo drama, the fact is that life goes on well for nearly all Americans during the furlough. They learn that there are a lot of non-essential government workers.

 

After multiple shutdowns, including the last one that bore the label "Schumer Shutdown" and was quickly conceded by the Democrats, the public is no longer afraid of non-essential services (roughly 25% of the government) being temporarily suspended.

 

Chuck Schumer took the bait on the second trap, and after the Oval Office meeting, he employed triumphantly the term "Trump Shutdown" as if he had won a victory through Trump's surrender. Thus fortified, he is more likely to take Trump's dare and refuse funding for adequate border security and metaphorically throw Bre'r Trump into the briar patch.

 

The third trap is maneuvering the Senate Democrats into standing for open borders, or at least ineffective border security. The current House of Representatives will pass the funding. It is the Senate, where a 60-vote filibuster could be employed, that would be the obstacle.

 

Never forget that Trump was the most successful producer of reality television in the history of the medium. He understands drama and a story arc. Chuck Schumer leading a Senate filibuster right before Christmas to stymie border protection is exactly the story Trump wants the nation's TV-viewers to absorb.

 

He is immeasurably aided in crafting his third trap narrative by the Democrats' acceptance of and belief in the narratives peddled by their allies in the mainstream media. Just as they believe that the voters share their own horror over a "partial government shutdown," they also believe their own rhetoric about a wall being "immoral" (Pelosi) or "wasteful" (Schumer).

 

But the arrival of the Central American caravan and the reaction of Tijuana's political leadership and citizens have changed the game. The "race card" (more properly, the "ethnicity card" for Hispanics) no longer trumps (pun intentional) the hand being played by Trump. It is obvious that a substantial portion of the populace of Central America would like to enter the United States and take advantage of our free schooling for their children; food stamps; the refundable tax credit (which doesn't refund taxes, but sends a check to poor families who file tax returns without owing any taxes); Section 8 housing; and, when their kids are ready for college, race preferences.

 

Trump knows he would win in the court of public opinion, by making the point that the Democrats want to let more illegals into the country, and that failure to reinforce the border will mean more caravans, more terrorists, and more welfare clients entering our country.

She added that the only people who would gain in such circumstances would be Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn and Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer John McDonnell, two vocal opponents of the Brexit deal.

Two groups of Central American migrants marched to the U.S. Consulate in Tijuana on Tuesday with a list of demands for the Trump administration, the San Diego Tribune reported.

What are the details?

 

The first group of about 100 arrived at the consulate before noon. They presented a letter that ordered their asylum or that they are paid $50,000 each to turn around and head back home.

 

"It may seem like a lot of money to you," organizer Alfonso Guerrero Ulloa of Honduras told the newspaper. "But it is a small sum compared to everything the United States has stolen from Honduras."

 

The letter criticized the U.S. government for its response in Central America and requested that the U.S. government oust Honduran President Orlando Hernandez from office.

 

Trump had threatened to stop financial aid to Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala if the governments didn't intervene to stop the caravan before reaching the border.

 

The second group of about 50 arrived a couple of hours later with their demand letter.

 

They insisted that the U.S. to speed up the process for asylum. They demanded that the U.S. border officials allow up to 300 asylum-seekers each day at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in San Diego.

 

The current rate of entry is between 40 to 100, according to the Tribune.

 

"In the meantime, families, women and children who have fled our countries continue to suffer and the civil society of Tijuana continue to be forced to confront this humanitarian crisis, a refugee crisis caused in great part by decades of U.S. intervention in Central America," the letter said.

 

More than a dozen from the second group had participated in a hunger strike that demanded a speedier process.

 

The group also asked Mexican authorities to stop deporting the migrants.

TheDCNF asked 31 businesses, foundations and individuals agitating for climate action if they’d support banning private jets.

The U.N. is calling for trillions to meet the Paris climate accord’s goals, so what’s a few thousand private jets?

 

Big businesses largely came out in support of the Paris Agreement on global warming, but most contacted by The Daily Caller News Foundation were silent on whether they would give up flying private jets.

 

TheDCNF wanted to test the commitment of big companies, foundations and outspoken activists who back the Paris accord. The question: Would you support a ban on private jet travel to help stem global warming?

 

Most companies and individuals TheDCNF reached out to did not respond, including Facebook, Apple, Google and other companies that often tout their “green image.” Not even former Vice President Al Gore, the father of climate activism, responded to TheDCNF’s question.

 

In fact, all but two of the 26 corporations were silent when asked by TheDCNF if they would support a ban on private jets to help cut greenhouse gas emissions in line with what the United Nations says is needed to meet the Paris accord. TheDCNF asked a total of 31 companies, foundations and individuals if they would support a private jet ban.

 

To keep projected global warming below 2 degrees Celsius, the main goal of the Paris accord, the U.N. says emissions need to fall drastically. The U.N. says the world is currently on track for 3 degrees Celsius of warming.

 

The U.N. calls for a $122 trillion restructuring of the global economy to keep global warming within the limits of the Paris accord, which is likely to fall heavily on working class and poor people who can least afford higher energy costs.

Vatican: ‘Make Migration Work’ for Everybody

 

In his second address before the U.N. meeting on international migration, the Vatican’s secretary of state said that the Holy See’s primary objective is to make migration work for everybody.

 

“To achieve the declared objective to make migration work for all,” said Vatican Cardinal Pietro Parolin, “it is crucial to clarify the roles to be played by the different actors or stakeholders, so as to promote shared and balanced responsibilities.”

 

In order to be successful, said the Vatican chief, U.N. organizers need to engage all the players on the global scene.

 

“The partnerships necessary to implement successfully the vision of the Global Compact on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration should include national and local institutions, the private sector, trade unions, civil society, academia, migrants and diaspora groups,” Cardinal Parolin said.

 

“Among the non-governmental actors, the Holy See would like to highlight the special role of faith-based organizations, which have proven themselves especially effective in providing locally-tailored support to migrants in vulnerable situations,” the cardinal added, while insisting that “the work of faith-based organizations should be properly acknowledged and effectively encouraged by the responsible authorities.”

 

Religions and faith-based organizations offer “are the ‘first responders’ in those areas of need, including migration,” he said.

 

The key to making migration work for everybody, Parolin said, is “the engagement of migrants themselves.”

 

“In this context, the Holy See calls for greater participation of migrants in formulating and implementing those policies, programmes and innovative initiatives that concern them,” he said. “Such participation should be promoted at all levels, both individually and collectively, and institutionalized whenever possible, so as to provide regular and official avenues of effective partnership with institutions.”

 

Migrations “often reveal failures and shortcomings on the part of States and the international community,” Parolin said.

 

In his address Tuesday, the cardinal underscored “the commitment to ensure fair and ethical recruitment of migrants, including young people, to undertake decent work” as well as “ensuring migrants’ access to employment, fostering their skills development, and empowering them to contribute to sustainable development in their communities both of destination and of origin.”

 

The cardinal did not discuss the effects of mass migration on local populations or its impact on the workforce, a concern often cited by those who question the logic of uncontrolled migration.
