essentially, to sum it up in a few sentences, it seems as though Khashoggi was working with many opposed to MbS within the royal family and likely passing information to the media and others like Turkey and Iran about a coup.

MbS wanted to get info from him through "enhanced interrogation" (common in the ME) and ended up killing him. It seems Israel helped track his movements and likely picked up his communications too, and the CIA likely helped.
