Maastricht University was still trying to recover from a crippling cyberattack nearly a week after the university's computer systems were felled in a ransomware scheme. One expert told De Limburger that Russian organized cybercrime outfit TA505 is responsible for the attack.

 

"It is of the utmost importance at this moment that students and staff do not perform any actions on UM computers or systems. This applies to both inside and outside the university," the university said in its update on Monday. "This is to avoid any risk for research and repair work and for data retention."

 

The university was particularly concerned about whether or not researchers would be able to meet deadlines for grant and subsidy applications. In a statement, the university said it would try to lobby on behalf of researchers to obtain deadline extensions wherever possible, but that the winter break might make its appeals less likely to be heard.

 

Also on Monday, the university expanded the capacity of a helpdesk to assist in answering questions from students regarding the attack. It also said that the applications for all study programs, including those submitted before the attack, were safe.

 

The university said it still planned to resume classes on January 6, with its buildings set to reopen four days earlier.

 

New York-based cyber expert Vitali Kremez told De Limburger that TA505 was responsible for the attack. He said the group distributes Clop, a ransomware program first discovered in February 2019.

 

Security firm Fox-IT was working with the university on the forensic investigation and recovery of UM systems hit in the ransomware attack, where hackers encrypt files with a password only they know. Once a ransom is paid, the password is revealed to decrypt the affected files.

 

"TA505 is a prolific cybercriminal group known for its attacks against multiple financial institutions and retail companies using malicious spam campaigns and different malware," said global cybersecurity business Trend Micro.

 

Kremez also noted the hacker group's focus on public institutions, because data recovery is urgently necessary for them "The chance that they will pay ransom is therefore greater," he told De Limburger.

 

"Almost all Windows systems have been affected and it is particularly difficult to use e-mail services," the university said on Christmas Eve. "Extra security measures have been taken to protect (scientific) data. UM is investigating if the cyber attackers have had access to this data."

Maricopa County Assessor Paul Petersen has been indicted in an international adoption fraud scheme that involves human smuggling, sale of children and communications fraud, multiple state attorneys general confirmed Tuesday evening. The Arizona Attorney General’s office did not provide additional details but said it will hold a news conference Wednesday morning to talk about the charges the elected Maricopa County official faces in multiple states. A release from the Utah Attorney General's Office says Petersen was arrested in California Tuesday evening. The Utah Attorney General said it is charging Petersen with human smuggling, sale of a child and communications fraud.

 

According to Arizona court documents, Petersen—an adoption lawyer licensed in Utah and Arizona—and Lynwood Jennet helped pregnant women travel from the Republic of the Marshall Islands in the central Pacific Ocean to Arizona to give up their children for adoption. The court documents say the women returned directly to the Marshall Islands in several instances. The Utah Attorney General's Office said Petersen also transported more than 40 pregnant Marshallese women into Utah over the last three years.

You can tell that the Obama administration’s legacy in the Middle East is in danger because the media, as the self-appointed janitors of that legacy, have gone into overdrive obfuscating the timing, context, and significance of this week’s attack on the United States embassy in Baghdad. Although President Donald Trump has gone a long way to dismantling Obama’s legacy in the region, much more remains to be done, including a halt to American taxpayer money that has been flowing into Iranian-controlled governments in Iraq and Lebanon.

Earlier this week Iran-backed militias stormed the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, chanting “Down, down USA!” and hurling water bottles and smashing security cameras. The attackers breached parts of the embassy and were only disbursed the next day, after Trump deployed Marines to ensure the safety of our embassy personnel and property.

The attacks have been building for months, including roughly a dozen attacks on U.S. assets by these militias and American retaliatory strikes against five locations in Iraq and Syria belonging to the Iranian-backed Kata’ib Hezbollah. The group represents an ongoing replication of the “Islamic revolutionary model” that Iran first “exported” to and “perfected” in Lebanon in the early 1980s.

The New York Times has labeled the attackers “mourners” responding to the U.S. strikes, while the front page of the first Washington Post edition of 2020 labeled them “protesters.” The latter is a particularly pernicious mislabeling. The media has done its best to conflate the attacks with anti-Iran protests that have been happening across Iraq for the last three months, but of course those actual protesters are pro-Iraqi sovereignty demonstrators fed up with the corruption and the broad perception that the Iraqi government is controlled by Iran.

Confirming exactly that accusation, the Iraqi government has repeatedly attacked the anti-Iran protesters, killing hundreds and wounding thousands, while giving a free pass and ready access to the Iran-backed fighters who stormed our embassy.

The media’s goal is to characterize the protests as a wholesale rejection of Trump’s policies in the region, hence the wall-to-wall disinformation about mourning and protesting. What’s actually at stake is Obama’s legacy. The Iran Deal was a bargain in which Iran would be handed control over the Middle East in exchange for some temporary limitations on nuclear activities.

As Obama said, the Saudis — by which he meant Sunnis across the region — would just have to learn to “share the neighborhood” with Iran. The attack on our embassy shows what sharing the region actually means, and the anti-Iran Iraqi protesters are saying they reject it.

Trump has partially withdrawn from the Iran deal, and Tehran is feeling the pressure. Behnam Ben Taleblu, a scholar from the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies in Washington, recently said the “Death to America” chants are a “dead giveaway” that these protests are being orchestrated by Iran as an effort to shore up its position. “These are pro-Iran and pro-militia sympathizers that appear to be out of touch with the thousands of Iraqis who have been chanting ‘Iran, out!’”

Other parts of Obama’s legacy, however, persist. One of the most glaring in the aftermath of the attack on our embassy is that we continue to pour money into countries like Iraq and Lebanon that are outright dominated by the mullahs in Iran through proxies like the Hezbollah militias in those countries.

Inside the administration, Trump loyalists have sought to cut that aid the Deep State has rushed in to preserve those policies. In Congress, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) recently sent around a two-page bill titled the “Stop Sending American Taxpayer Money to Governments Controlled by Terrorists Act.” The bill smartly proposed halting assistance to any Lebanese administration that is improperly influenced by Hezbollah.

Cruz’s bill should be expanded to include any government that is under Iranian control, not just Lebanon, as Iran has made attempts to establish proxy regimes in Syria, Yemen, and Iraq. Given Iran is interested in expanding its hegemony in the region by reproducing the Islamic Revolution in neighboring countries, there is no realm in which American aid should facilitate such activities.

Cruz’s proposal, and likewise an expansion of it, would amount to a full condemnation of what Foundation for the Defense of Democracies’ Tony Badran has labeled the Obama Realignment Doctrine, or. Obama’s strategy to restore a power “balance” in the Middle East by empowering Iran and disfavoring our long-term allies. Such an approach achieved its heyday in the Iran Deal and its repudiation in Trump’s withdrawal.

Now, I didn't get all crazy with war theories – that's on you – but I did note that the military has gotten quiet. They've done this several times recently – usually closely associated (chronologically) to some threat. Does this mean that they are hunkering down for war? Maybe. Maybe not. It isn't enough information to draw a conclusion from. Actually, I'm surprised that this many transport planes are showing and that so FEW tankers are. Normally there are 3-4 tankers on a sunny afternoon.

Just for a little "inside" Planefag knowledge you may or may not be interested in….Military and Civilian aircraft are REQUIRED to have ADS-B out capability as of this year. That said, I am sure the military skirts around this to some extent.

The point is, they are not "turning it off". That is not how it works. What the military has is encrypted. It is there, we just can't see it. This is on most combat ready aircraft. Once in a while you will see the occasional B-52 or F-16 test aircraft or whatever. ADS-B is on. Always, unless there is a mechanical failure. It is a requirement of Air Traffic Control.

Now, most of the time, the "vanishing" is not due to them cloaking or turning it off….although the Electronic warfare aircraft are capable of that….no, more often, it is a result of the ground receiver feeding the ADS-B exchange system is simply not picking it up. There are holes out there where they seem to "disappear'.

I DO know they have the ability on at least some aircraft to switch between encrypted and non-encrypted, as we have seen AF1 on multiple occasions employ this.

Just take an x-ray and compare your skeletal structure with either a male of female skeleton and you will see. The female pelvic girdle is more "bowl" shaped to hold another human as a fetus. It also has a different angle.

 

The facade is all it is. The skeleton, bone structure/thickness, muscle structure and bone-connection points and the dna explains the truth.
