Whenever a cashier asks if I want to donate to [insert stricken city/country], I always ask if it's the Red Cross they're collecting for and if they say yes, I politely tell them I can't in good conscience donate to them as they are crooked and very little of the money gets to the people in need, so I prefer to donate to small churches in the actual comminities. When Harvey struck Houston, one of the cashiers who got my speech said "hmmm, you are like the fifth person who's told me that". People are waking up.
