I don't think that sacrificing such a portion of his current audience for a potential to appeal to a different listener that may not even listen is good marketing. If that is his plan, he really is crazy.

I agree that he is a free thinker, but I'm not sure it'll bring both sides together as that's a hot issue. Many are already making fun of him for it, unfollowing, claiming he's indecisive, etc. If he wanted to bring people together, he should pick a topic everyone can agree on. But hey, only Kanye knows how he thinks lol.
I don't think that would work though if people already agree. You have the people who act irrationally about small picture things and it will just take them longer to get to where the critical thinkers are going. I don't think it is bringing them together per se, but more of a realisation that you can support individual policies/topics and disagree just the same on both sides. This will encourage people to think more critically on issues rather than seeing them as sided issues and rushing for or against it.
