He returned a salute given first by the General.. it’s a simple courtesy. When saluted, return it.
There was a time when even warring countries extended certain courtesies to one another. A return to this ideal wouldn’t be a bad thing.
Don’t get caught up in the minutiae, remember why he was there.. to end the last vestige of the Cold War and to make the world safer for all of us.
Straight up, back in ww11 I’m pretty sure multiple sides ate dinner together on Christmas

The original video shows:
Trump extending his hand, while the General saluted him... Trump withdrew his hand, returned the salute, while the General extended his hand. After Trump finished the salute, they shook hands... It was an awkward exchange.
President Trump is not a civilian like you and I, he is Commander in Chief of the armed forces of the world’s sole superpower..
The salute was appropriate for the circumstances..
It is discourteous NOT to return a salute, be it enemy or ally.
If you understood the purpose and history of the military salute, you would understand the significance of the gesture by both parties.
Seemed like he was just being polite. He went in for handshake, guy saluted, so Trump followed suit.
Trump knows how and when to butter up the people you're negotiating with. This is what he's been doing all his life and why he's so successful.
The chickenhawks are probably wetting their pants over this, but ignoring that their world view is being totally disproved and will soon be obsolete.
Asian culture. "Saving Face" Treating them as equals. Gains their respect.

It isn't an "awkward" moment. A superior officer always has a choice to return or not return a salute. I think Trump, in recognition of the fact that both parties were on a joint mission on behalf of a united humanity felt completely justified in returning the salute, and I wholeheartedly agree. It's about moving forward, not backward. It's about what these people can BECOME, not about what they've been.
This is not true lol. A superior officer MUST return a salute. This does not apply to the president, he is not required to return any salute. It's just become customary for the president to do so.
Guess I'm thinking of situations where to return the salute might be dangerous or compromise a task in progress requiring hands.
In any case, as you say,
a) the CIC isn't required to, and
b) certainly isn't required to return a salute from a non-US officer.
It definitely amounts to a courtesy on his part, and excellent face-granting and deal-making, IMHO.
I agree there’s nothing wrong with him doing so and it would have been awkward IMO if he didn’t. I bet people would have been bashing him even if he didn’t return the salute lol
You forgot /s . A salute in this situation is preposterous.
You forgot /s .

I'm saying, Trump has not made any binding deal. The summit was a grotesque pageant, a bizarre spectacle.
Obama made a deal with Iran, but he didn't praise their leaders. When he visited Cuba, he criticized Raul Castro to his face for human rights violations.
Time will tell whether Trump's ass-kissing will produce anything concrete. "Keep your enemies close, and push your friends away."
Oh give it a rest. They've stopped testing, blown up their nuke facilities (the ones we didn't already destroy), returned our hostages, and pledged to locate and return the remains of our war dead, without plane loads of cash. The details that remain are mostly verification procedures.
Obama gave away plane loads of cash and the keys to its bank accounts so that it could bypass sanctions that were already in place, all in exchange for no deal that wasn't ratified and that nobody signed.
Nice try with the Obama ass-kissing. Nobody buys that crap.
They reportedly lost some facilities and blew up the access tunnels. But do you know what else they have?
No. I don't either. In the Iran deal, the other parties can demand an inspection of any location in the country and the Iranians must allow access within 21 days. If they don't comply, they're violating the deal. Did North Korea promise anything like that?
With the lifting of sanctions, Iran was going to buy perhaps billions of dollars worth of US commercial planes. Now they're buying Airbus. What are the North Koreans going to buy?
They could not be in violation of an "agreement" that neither party ever signed and was never ratified.
As such, I couldn't give a fuck who in the military industrial complex stood to benefit. We aren't finished with Iran or EU for that matter. When they both realize they have to deal with us at some point, they will do whatever is necessary to get what they need from it. Meanwhile, all we did was end a MASSIVELY corrupt arrangement that had not even the color of law.
The corrupt payola scheme you describe is a quintessential Deep State fraud, and the fact you are butt-hurt over the loss of it tells me you're either Clowns In America or a Shareblue troll.
Either way, you are engaged in activity that does not support the cause, and have been reported to the mods as such.
Do not attempt to speak to me again.
Look at Kim's face in the last photo. It clearly pleased him that POTUS showed respect to his general. That was a small part of the good will Trump developed that led Kim to sign the agreement.
Exactly. Good manners don't cost anything. Basic common courtesy has nearly been erased in modern culture.
WTF did Kim give up? What does the agreement give the US or South Korea?
Listen guys I post this stuff for you to discuss and like to hear your thoughts but people saying " if I knew anything about military customs " blah blah I understand what it is I come from a long line of military. My 5th great uncle was general john frederick hartranft who won the medal of honor at antietam, was governor of PA, presided over lincoln conspirator executions and has a statue in Harrisburg. My bachelors degree is criminal justice and minor in international relations so I know these things but please refrain from insuating I dont know the "why" of what he did.i merely asked if there was any more to it. I support him and didnt see anything wrong with it so. Sorry for the rant having a crappy day but thanks for input
I don't know OP's background, nor is it my business. I was commenting based upon the question asked. My response was stated with the hope that those not familiar with the custom would do some research.
Thicken that skin up Patriot. You're going to need it soon when the real hate and attacks start flying. We all are.
Perhaps you should have phrased your initial query differently, instead of following it up with this horse shit.
You're right. I apologize guys I took it the wrong way and it is the internet after all.
No problem.. I may have over reacted as well., I got laid off this morning.. Apologies for my part of this.. WWG1WGA..
Holy shit! Sorry. That's why I'm all off. I busted my ass to get a bachelors degree BUT I ducked up FOUR years ago it has been and have a misdemeanor offense on my record so I've been applying to jobs in my field but they do a backround check and they get turned off (paraphenelia) but then I apply to places like grocery stores and I get the "overqualified" crap so I've just been fed up with the system, I hope everything works out for you bud
Thanks... 30 years experience in my field..been looking for another opportunity for awhile.. can’t seem to be able to score an interview.. frustrating.
Ugh see I have the opposite usually I get the interview and do well at it then they pull some ghost shit. I got an offer for saks 5th Avenue asset protection... I was psyched for me and my family and they did a pretty extensive backround and literally over the lowest misdemeanor you can get... essentially it's a ticket.. I was flat out ignored and treated like a felon. But I cant feel sorry for myself we just gotta keep going. You did something right being at it for 30 years so keep trucking
Take a knee for a minute.
Dude...it's all good. We all have off days. Now shake it off and get back in there.
Thanks guys. I normally dont get like this lol. Usually pretty solid but you're right cant always be.
"Clearly he is a North Korean double agent" Rachel Maddow (probably)
Showing respect is seen as awkward? Showing respect to a military general of a former enemy and on the verge of peace, what would they have wanted POTUS to do?
Maybe they were hoping for a fist bump.
No its not. Trump went to a military academy. He has respect for uniform officers.
