I must have received half a dozen excited phone calls. "I hear you're on the list?!" they said, hardly able to contain their excitement.

The list, as most people now know, is Jeffrey Epstein's "little black book", curated for him by socialite Ghislaine Maxwell and containing the names and addresses of who's who in both London and New York.

It first emerged in 2012 (when Epstein's former housekeeper was arrested by the FBI while trying to to sell it) and was published on Gawker.com a few years later, along with the flight logs for his private jet, nicknamed the "Lolita Express", but it wasn't until a few months ago that everyone seems to have seen the full inventory.

The likes of Bill Clinton, Donald Trump and Naomi Campbell rub shoulders with Prince Andrew, Tony Blair and former Conservative party chairman Andrew Feldman.

Not a single digit of a single address is missing. A circle around your entry is even more reason for uncontained excitement.

We even have the honour of double entries: one for my husband and me and the other for my father-in-law, who was also friendly with Ghislaine back in the days when that was an acceptable thing to be.

Ghislaine was in my husband's circle at Oxford and we knew many people in common. Many of our friends were in her inner set (though none will speak about her now).

Ghislaine was like a sniffer dog: sharp, alert and with a nose that could detect any useful information. I was then an assistant producer at 60 Minutes with access to presidents and prime ministers; that caught her attention.

I remember her as being quick-witted, attention-seeking and the complete darling of her set. She appeared at every party along with half a dozen of the then-It girls whose main occupation seemed to be finding a wealthy man with a "house".

Ghislaine's close female friends, however, were career-minded and independent as she clearly was. Many worked in the City.

We all know what happened next. As the Maxwell empire crumbled beneath her, she teleported herself to New York City and that's where it gets very interesting.

I remember going to dinner parties with her brothers Kevin and Ian in the mid-Nineties and thinking how downtrodden they looked (the hostesses were being kind as mostly everyone else had dumped them).

While they hid away in shame and what looked like poverty, Ghislaine re-emerged, and now, with some of most connected people in Manhattan. Not only was she mixing with the very rich, but she seemed to be right in the middle of the action.

In fact, she seemed to be directing traffic. Socialising was her clearly well-paid job: as the newly unsealed court documents reveal, Jeffrey Epstein urged Ghislaine Maxwell: "go to parties, deal with it" even after she was sued by Virginia Roberts in 2015.

As a New Yorker who married a Brit (we met there), I observed how easy it was for someone with a British accent and the faint whiff of poshness to forge their way into the most exclusive circles.

Brideshead Revisited (a bit like Downton Abbey now) had captured the nation's imagination. London was parochial in those days: Manhattan was where the action was.

The Brits there managed to infiltrate every circle; appearing at all the right parties and nightclubs such as Nell's and Au Bar and sharing summer houses in the Hamptons and Newport.

What was patently clear to me is that few of the wealthy Americans whose homes and clubs they frequented were invited back home.

In fact, at least two weddings I know of were based on a complete misunderstanding. She assumed he had a fortune and vice versa. In the days before pre-nups, social media and Google, appearances really could lead you astray.

The George W. Bush Presidential Center was the victim recently of a hack attack that resulted in an undisclosed sum being paid to the perpetrator, the organization announced Friday.

Unencrypted data involving the Bush Center’s donors, including names, contact information and contribution history, was compromised during a May security breach, the organization said on its website.

The donor data was stolen during an attack suffered by Blackbaud, a third-party data management service used by the Bush Center, but has supposedly since been destroyed.

“Blackbaud informed us that it paid a ransom to the attackers in order to obtain confirmation that the ‎compromised unencrypted information has been destroyed,” the Bush Center said in a statement.

“To date, there ‎is no indication that any of the compromised unencrypted information is subject to further disclosure or misuse‎, and given the intent of the criminals to obtain the payment of the ransom, the Bush Center does not ‎believe there is a high risk that the unencrypted information would be used for other purposes,” the statement said.

Blackbaud acknowledged compensating whoever stole the data but stressed the worst of the breach was likely behind them.

“Based on the nature of the incident, our research, and third party (including law enforcement) investigation, we have no reason to believe that any data went beyond the cybercriminal, was or will be misused; or will be disseminated or otherwise made available publicly,” Blackbaud said in a separate statement. “We apologize that this happened and will continue to do our very best to supply help and support as we and our customers jointly navigate this cybercrime incident.

Social Security numbers of donors were stolen as well, according to the Bush Center. That data was encrypted, however, and the decryption keys needed to decipher it was stored separately and not stolen, the center said.

Opened in 2013, the Bush Center is located on the campus of Southern Methodist University near Dallas, Texas. The complex contains a museum as well as Mr. Bush’s presidential library.

On 14 June 2020, Queen Street resounded with the sound of over 2000 people who came together calling for an end to racism. This second Black Lives Matter rally in Auckland saw a sea of people gathered at Aotea Square in the afternoon in solidarity with victims of police brutality in the US, and in solidarity with black, indigenous, Māori, Pasifika and people of colour living in New Zealand. Behind the gathering was a group of young Auckland based activists Favour Ukah, Nele Kalolo and Lourdes Vano who call their group FTP - For the People.

Drawing from their experiences of racism combined with the guidance of mentors - activists and academics both, they managed to pull off what was their biggest rally ever, mostly over Zoom calls and Facebook messenger. Amongst the people they sought support and guidance from were the likes of Will Ilolahia of the Black Panthers, Makanaka Tuwe and Dr Camille Nakhid, Associate Professor at AUT's School of Social Sciences.

"You couldn't say no to them if you saw how they worked together and played to each other's strengths. I saw the diversity in their opinions and not just tokenism, but in equity" says Camille.

The girls were invited to speak to Camille's class at AUT last week. The course is in Civic Engagement, and they spoke to a full lecture room about their personal experiences with racism in New Zealand, and their involvement with youth activism. "They know the mahi" says Camille. "Having them in that class, and my class is predominantly women - they need to see women reflected back at them, they see that the sisterhood is strong" she .says.

"One of things about activism is that you will have cognitive dissonance where your values will conflict. It helps having mentors who you know have paved the way for you to get into such spaces" says Nele.

One of the more common questions the girls have been asked both before and after the rally was why police brutality and George Floyd’s death in the United States, has any bearing on New Zealand society. Speaking of racism in New Zealand, Favour says "a lot of people are trying to deny it doesn't exist here. I think if the foundations are the same, the soil is the same, the fruit will be the same. It may look different but it tastes similar. We have to talk about here" Favour Ukah says. "One of our main goals is to localise these problems and shed light on the fact that Māori and Pasifika are highly racially profiled," Lourdes adds.

Speaking of what next after the BLM rally, Camille says "the challenge is to stay energised. It's an exhausting task. People that want the status quo to continue will just wait for us to get tired. Changes need to happen during the momentum - we can't keep going from protest to protest."

Camille is Trinidadian, lived in the States and has been residing in New Zealand for over two decades. Speaking of the relevance here of the BLM movement born in the US, Camille cites examples of inequalities and disparities in the housing, justice, health and education system here that she feels need to be addressed. "While the physical deaths may not be happening but everytime you marginalise us, refuse to acknowledge stolen lands from Māori, that is the death of our spirit and of humanity nevertheless."

"Racism is the knee of the necks of Māori, Pacific and ethnic, communities of colour," Camille said during her speech at the rally.

"Getting up on that on that stage the first thing that comes to mind… I look out at all the people there and I thought 'Are you here for the long haul? Because for people of colour this is a living reality. How long are you going to stand side by side - are are you going to go back to sleep when this is all over and hit the snooze button?'"

"What stood out to me was how many young (Pākehā) people came up and said, we will stand by them. We need these allies who will offer unconditional support. Young people, they have it, if they can continue. You can't sit back as yet but I feel Aotearoa is in safe hands if we hand it over to them" Camille says.
