Actor Samantha Morton has issued a public apology for threatening a young girl with a knife when she was 14 years old.

 

The Walking Dead star said she wanted to “set the record straight” in an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs.

 

In the interview, she said she was “incredibly sorry” about the incident, for which she was charged with attempted murder.

 

She spent three nights in solitary confinement in an adult cell block, and was eventually convicted of the lesser charge of threats to kill.

 

Morton, who spent her childhood between care homes and foster families in Nottingham, had confronted an older girl who had been bullying at the care home where they both lived.

She said she now feels “absolute forgiveness” and thinks the majority of those working in the care system in the Eighties were admirable.

Islamic extremists targeted Europe for terror attacks every two weeks after fall of ISIS

 

Extremists have attempted or carried out an attack in European countries every two weeks since the defeat of Daesh (ISIS), a new report claims.

 

The study, carried out by the Counter Extremism Group (CEG) in the UK, cited 33 confirmed plots of religiously motivated terrorism in European countries in the months after Daesh forces were driven out of their last stronghold of Baghuz in Syria in March 2019.

 

The report warned that, despite Daesh’s collapse in the Middle East, the threat posed by Islamic extremists remained dangerously high, and that “tens of thousands of radicals scattered across Europe have not disappeared” because of its defeat, the Telegraph reported.

 

CEG’s analysis came from information dating back to January 2014 held by authorities in the UK and various European countries regarding known terror plots.

North Korea has arrested 20 “phone brokers” who arrange calls and money transfers from outside the country in a nationwide crackdown on illegal mobile phone users, sources familiar with the cases told RFA.

 

The accused — some of whom were moonlighting security officials — were arrested in the Ryangang provincial capital Hyesan, a northern city on the Chinese border, after they were caught arranging phone calls and remittances between North Koreans and their relatives in China and South Korea.

 

“They were arrested on charges of contacting the outside world and using Chinese mobile phones, which are prohibited,” a law enforcement official from Ryanggang province, who requested anonymity to speak freely, told RFA’s Korean Service Tuesday.

Pennsylvania Counties Confess They Submitted Inaccurate Data to Gov't on Qualified Voters

 

Several counties in Pennsylvania admit they submitted erroneous information to a government agency regarding eligible voters.

 

The conservative group, Judicial Watch filed a lawsuit against the state of Pennsylvania and three of its counties in April. The case noted that up to 800,000 registered voters in the commonwealth should have been classified as "inactive."

 

The group issued a warning earlier this year after discovering the number of registered voters was too high.

 

Pennsylvania admitted it approved incorrect data to the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) for Bucks, Chester, and Delaware counties. Those counties also reported their own amended figures, which varied from those submitted by the state.

 

Federal law stipulates that Pennsylvania must confirm to the EAC how many voter registrations were removed from their rolls because the voter died or moved out of the state.

Judicial Watch compared registration data in the EAC's report to data from the Census Bureau and determined that Bucks, Chester, and Delaware Counties had total registration rates between 96 and 97 percent.

 

It was noted that the percentage was high for the state of Pennsylvania, especially when compared to the rest of the country. This led to the conclusion that the outdated registrations had not been removed.

 

"Pennsylvania's voting rolls are such a mess that even Pennsylvania can't tell a court the details of how dirty or clean they are. The simple solution is to follow federal law and take the necessary and simple steps to clean up their voter rolls," said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

Family sues Hawaii nursing home operator after coronavirus-related death of Vietnam War veteran

 

A wrongful death lawsuit against the operator of the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo has been filed by the sons of Chris Drayer, a decorated Vietnam War veteran who died after contracting in Hawaii’s largest coronavirus nursing home outbreak.

 

The complaint filed in Circuit Court against Utah-based Avalon Health Care and four of its affiliates by Noah Bennett-Drayer and Daniel Bennett-Drayer alleges the elder Drayer died due to “Avalon’s substandard care and non-existent health safety practices.”

 

“Chris Drayer did not deserve to die at Yukio. He died because Avalon failed to keep him safe. It is beyond belief that nearly six months after the onset of the worst pandemic in 100 years, a facility caring for the most vulnerable members of our community could fail to practice the most basic of protections for its residents,” Hawaii island attorney Jeffrey Foster said in a news release. “The 26 veterans at Yukio who have died due to COVID-19 appear to have been victims of Avalon’s gross mismanagement and we intend to hold the Avalon entities legally accountable.”

 

Avalon spokeswoman Allison Griffiths said she couldn’t comment on individual cases due to privacy laws, but that “we mourn every life that has been lost to this historic pandemic as our heroic health-care workers continue to fight to save lives.”

 

“The health and safety of our residents is always our top priority,” she said.

Wednesday marked the first day of a two-day House Oversight Committee hearing titled "Unsustainable Drug Prices: Testimony from the CEOs." Bristol Myers Squibb CEO Giovanni Caforio, Teva Pharmaceuticals CEO Kåre Schultz, and former Celgene CEO Mark Alles all endured nearly four hours of grilling over the price of prescription drugs—which are almost always far more expensive in the United States than anywhere else in the world.

 

Porter (D-Calif.), a former consumer protection attorney, was the most ferocious committee member to address the CEOs. Bringing out her infamous white board, she attacked Celgene's repeated price hikes for the cancer drug Revlimid, which now costs $763 per dose—in 2005 it cost $215. When Alles attempted to explain that the drug has been approved for new uses, Porter hit back, and hard.

 

"Did the drug start to work faster? Were there fewer side effects? How did you change the formula or production of Revlimid to justify this price increase?" Porter asked. "To recap here:The drug didn't get any better, the cancer patients didn't get any better, you just got better at making money—you just refined your skills at price gouging."

 

Porter has built a reputation for speaking tough truth to power, on issues ranging from defending access to crucial public benefits, to challenging mega-bank CEOs on income inequality, to exposing the pernicious influence of dark money in politics.

 

Toward the end of Wednesday's nearly four-hour session, three of the four members of the so-called Squad—Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.)—slammed the CEOs over what Ocasio-Cortez called the "exorbitant cost" of life-saving medications.

 

Armed with a chart showing the cost of 40 milligrams of Teva's multiple sclerosis drug Copaxone is more than five times as high in the U.S. as in Britain, Ocasio-Cortez refuted an assertion by Schultz that medications cost more in the United States because American patients have "very broad, and very early access" to new drugs.

 

Citing Teva's own internal documents, Ocasio-Cortez showed the company was forced to lower prices by European governments—which unlike the U.S. have institutedspending controls—even as it raised prices for American patients.

 

Pressley asserted that "the lack of access to affordable life-saving medicine is an injustice [that] represents an act of economic violence and an attack on the basic principle that healthcare is a fundamental human right," while Tlaib ripped Schultz for using charitable donations like "a side hustle."

 

"Your pharmaceutical company makes these so-called charitable donations so you look like you give a shit about sick people," said Tlaib. "But in reality these are just another scheme by your corporation to make money off of sick people."

Democrats Make Unified Demand To Postpone Barrett Confirmation Process, Citing GOP Covid Cases

 

Democratic lawmakers and progressive advocates demanded on Friday and into Saturday that the Senate Judiciary Committee postpone Judge Amy Coney Barrett's confirmation hearing for the U.S. Supreme Court after at least three Republican senators tested positive for the coronavirus.

 

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) announced his positive result on Saturday morning, a day after two Senate Judiciary Committee members—Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.)—were also diagnosed with Covid-19.

 

Johnson did not attend the White House gathering last Saturday where President Donald Trump announced his nomination of Barrett, but he has been attending lunches with other Republican senators three times per week, including this past week. Lee and Tillis have also been attending the gatherings, suggesting that they may have exposed several of their Senate colleagues. Democratic senators have suspended their in-person lunches in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

 

The progressive advocacy group Demand Justice was among those who called on the Senate Judiciary Committee to postpone Barrett's hearings, which are set to begin Oct. 13.

 

"They need to postpone the hearing because voting on Barrett before the election would gravely damage the legitimacy of the Court itself," wrote Susan Hennessey, executive editor of Lawfare. "Rushing to have the hearing under these circumstances just shows that Republicans know they won't have the votes after Election Day."

Johnson's diagnosis calls into question—even if the Senate Judiciary Committee moves forward with a virtual hearing—whether Barrett could be confirmed before Election Day, one month from Saturday.

 

As CNN reported Saturday, "If the three senators remain out this month, it would effectively prevent Barrett from being confirmed to the Supreme Court until they return, which could be after Election Day during a lame-duck session."

 

"A lame-duck confirmation is a situation that GOP leaders are eager to avoid in case they lose control of the chamber next month," reported Manu Raju and Lauren Fox. "The fear is that one or two GOP senators may break ranks after seeing the election results and citing the will of the voters."

 

Two Republican senators—Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) have already indicated they do not support moving forward with Barrett's confirmation process before the election, but have not ruled out a confirmation during a potential lame-duck session should Trump lose to Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

"All circuit court nominees have appeared in person during the pandemic, and there is far more at stake for the American people with this Supreme Court nomination, including the Affordable Care Act being struck down and more than seven million Covid survivors being denied health coverage," the lawmakers said. "It’s critical that Chairman Graham put the health of senators, the nominee and staff first – and ensure a full and fair hearing that is not rushed, not truncated, and not virtual. If you think you are avoiding the intrusive practices of Google by using alternative search site DuckDuckGo, a new report finds that the alternative site may still be handing your user data over to Google, anyway.

 

According to a report on One America News, DuckDuckGo is not much of a safe alternative for Internet users.

 

OAN spoke to Rich Granville, CEO of search engine site Yippy.com , and Granville pointed out that contrary to what DuckDuckGo claims, its code source contains customer tracking devices called “cookies.”

 

A cookie is a line of code that allows the website to track its visitors. Cookies are used by Google to target users for specific ads. If a user has visited a lot of sports sites, Google will see that and tailor ads that might appeal to a sports fan. Allies & protesters rally in Italy as ex-Deputy PM Salvini faces trial over ‘kidnapping’ of over 130 migrants

 

Matteo Salvini, head of the rightwing Lega Nord party, appeared in court over a 2019 order to bar migrants from disembarking onto Italy's shores. The hearing was accompanied by rallies both in support and against the politician.

 

People from both camps marched through Catania on Saturday, the second-largest city in Sicily, chanting slogans and carrying banners either supporting or opposing Salvini's cause. The rallies were held amid a heavy police presence as a preliminary hearing on Salvini's case was heard at the city’s Palace of Justice.

 

Salvini, who served as Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister until September 2019, was in court for the hearing on “aggravated kidnapping” charges brought against him. Further hearings have already been called for November and December. Judges have summoned as witnesses Italy's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, and the former Infrastructure and Transport minister Danilo Toninelli. All three were part of the coalition government at that time with Salvini.

 

During his 14-month tenure as Interior Minister, Salvini advocated a hardline approach towards illegal immigration. Back in 2018, he declared Italian ports off-limits to migrant-filled rescue ships, sparking numerous standoffs between the vessels and Italian authorities.

No News Is Good News: Media Willfully Ignore Hunter Biden Scandal

 

Last week, a Senate Intelligence Committee report detailed how the son of a major presidential candidate, who has an extensive history of shady foreign business dealings, received a $3.5-million wire transfer from the wife of a Russian politician.

 

The New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, MSNBC, and most major media outlets didn’t cover the wire-transfer story at all. Four years ago, not reporting such a story was a possibility too absurd to even contemplate – but then again, no one would have predicted the candidate with the shady Russia ties is not Donald Trump, but Joe Biden.

 

People often talk about how Trump is responsible for destroying political norms, and that’s a valid concern. However, one of the truly frightening things about the Trump era is how institutions have exploited a perceived crisis in truth-telling to justify abandoning their own standards by blaming it on Trump. Increasingly, we see major stories break where the media establishment decides on a collective omertà because the story undermines its own credibility or might sway voters in directions it doesn’t approve of. When that happens, no news is good news.

 

The problem with hiding the truth is that you can’t suppress it forever, let alone a week, in this news environment. After the initial blackout, we are finally starting to see some coverage of Hunter Biden’s suspect wire transfer – but only after Trump himself raised the issue in the recent presidential debate and forced the media’s hand. The little coverage the issue has received is instructive, and not in a good way.

 

When Trump raised the issue at the debate, Joe Biden responded by saying the claim was “Totally discredited. Totally discredited.” Given that it’s a direct allegation in a government document and Biden is flatly denying it, you’d think this would be a perfect opportunity for the media to dig in and sort out the truth of the claim. Instead, they have essentially punted on the issue.

 

According to PolitiFact, which refused to rate the claim either true or false, the facts are in dispute because “Biden’s lawyer says he did not co-found the partnership [that received the money] and had no stake in it,” and “Democrats say they reviewed the Republicans’ documentation but did not find a specific link to Hunter Biden.”

 

Serious journalists would see this for the artful dodge that it is. Essentially, no one disputes Treasury documents showing $3.5 million was wired to the Rosemont Seneca Thornton firm from the wife of the former mayor of Moscow for a vague “consultancy agreement.” Hunter Biden’s lawyer is suddenly disputing his client’s involvement in Rosemont Seneca Thornton without providing any tangible evidence to back up the denial. Senate Democrats have a partisan interest in separating Hunter Biden from the source of the tainted cash and their denial is obviously parsed.

 

So why does the Senate intel committee report that Biden was a “co-founder” of the firm in question? Well, one clue might be that committee members read it in the media. A lengthy New Yorker profile of Hunter Biden from last year, which clearly had extensive cooperation from the Biden team, reported the following: “In June, 2009, five months after Joe Biden became Vice-President, Hunter co-founded a second company, Rosemont Seneca Partners, with Christopher Heinz, Senator John Kerry’s stepson.” That was 15 months ago. For the Biden camp to be disputing this key fact now seems awfully convenient. Further, in that same magazine article, Hunter Biden admits to taking an $80,000 bribe from a Communist Chinese Party-connected tycoon, in the form of a 2.8-carat diamond delivered to his hotel room.

Former Chinese Diplomat Reportedly Headed TikTok Global Content Policy for Several Years

 

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - A former Chinese diplomat was in charge of TikTok’s department shaping its global content policy for several years, Financial Times (FT) reported Sunday citing two unnamed sources.

 

According to the newspaper, Cai Zheng was in his late twenties when he joined ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, after a four-year stint in Beijing’s embassy in Iran.

 

Cai was part of the team which drew up rules on which type of content to red-flag or delete, although he was not involved in case-by-case decisions, the FT reported.

 

The paper maintained that this calls into question repeated denials from ByteDance that it was tied in the Chinese government or its Communist Party in any way.

 

ByteDance confirmed that Cai had been in their employ but that he was no longer part of TikTok, but instead of the company’s gaming team.

 

TikTok made the same confirmation to the FT but said that Cai played no part in crafting the now-defunct content rules which caused controversy last year after leaked documents showed that TikTok at one point concertedly removed anti-Beijing material.

Attorney General Dana Nessel will no longer enforce Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's executive orders after the Michigan Supreme Court ruled Friday that one of the laws underpinning the orders was unconstitutional.

 

Nessel's decision comes as Whitmer's team has argued that her orders would stay in effect for 21 days after the ruling, a reference to a 21-day period in which parties can ask for reconsideration.

 

But opponents have said the 21-day rule doesn't apply to rulings issued in response to a federal certified question as was the case in Friday's Supreme Court decision.

Further, the language of the order, clearly calling all orders issued after April 30 to be unconstitutional seems to support immediate effect.

 

Nessel's office on Sunday made clear the department "will no longer enforce the governor's executive orders through criminal prosecution."

 

"However, her decision is not binding on other law enforcement agencies or state departments with independent enforcement authority," said Ryan Jarvi, a spokesman for Nessel's office.

 

"It’s her fervent hope that people continue to abide by the measures that Gov. Whitmer put in place — like wearing face masks, adhering to social distancing requirements and staying home when sick — since they’ve proven effective at saving lives," he said.

 

Jarvi credited the governor's actions with saving lives and counseled residents to follow the measures voluntarily.

 

The Michigan Chiefs of Police Association told The Detroit News Saturday that departments across the state were waiting for word from Nessel as to when the current executive orders would expire.
