Tehran accuses Washington of ‘economic terrorism’ after US sanctions major Iranian banks

 

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Majid Takht-Ravanchi, has condemned US sanctions against Iranian banks as an act of economic terrorism, designed to create suffering and social unrest with the aim of regime change.

Gov. Cuomo: ‘I Don’t Care’ About Your Religion — ‘You Have to Follow the Rules of the State’

 

Friday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) responded to religious groups filing separate federal lawsuits against him over his new restrictions limiting attendance at religious gatherings amid a spike in cases in some New York City neighborhoods.

 

Cuomo told “CNN Newsroom” acknowledged that it is a “complicated” situation because of different cultural aspects, but said that everyone has to “follow the rules,” no matter their religion.

 

“They are not following the rules. We know what happens when you don’t follow the rules: the infection rate goes up,” Cuomo advised. “And it just proves our point from the get-go. We know how to control the virus, but you have to control the virus. You have to be disciplined. And when you don’t follow the rules, it goes up. And that’s what’s happening in these very small clusters. Now, these are religious groups, it tends to get more complicated, frankly, because of some cultural aspects. But that’s what we’re seeing in New York.”

 

“The cluster is a predominantly ultra-orthodox cluster,” he continued. “The Catholic schools are closed because they happen to be in that cluster, but the issue is with that ultra-orthodox community. This is not a matter of religious freedom, right? I don’t care if you’re a Roman Catholic, you’re Jewish, you’re Muslim, you’re an atheist, you have to follow the rules of the state, the laws of the state. And I understand the beliefs of the ultra-orthodox, I’ve been very close to them all my life. I’m a big supporter of theirs, but they have to follow the rules, Jim, because we’re seeing the truth. And the truth is if you don’t follow the rules, the infection rate spreads, people get sick, and then you make others sick. You know, we’re talking about Brooklyn. We’re not talking about a hermetically sealed community in a rural area. This is in the middle of Brooklyn. They will make other people sick.”

Customer review site Yelp debuts 'racism alert' to freeze reviews of pages engulfed in discrimination scandals

 

User-generated review site Yelp has unveiled a ‘racism alert’ feature – an icon that will appear on the pages of businesses accused of discrimination. Reviewing is frozen while the accusations are investigated.

 

Trumpeting its “zero tolerance policy to racism,” the site announced the new feature in a blog post on Thursday, explaining that while it’s great that many users have been using Yelp to air their grievances about businesses behaving in a racist manner, this is sometimes done without “actual first-hand consumer experiences with the business.”

 

The icon, they wrote, is designed to protect both customers and businesses. Appearing beneath a warning exclamation point in a red circle, the alert will pop up when the user navigates to the page of a business “accused of racist behavior,” explaining that the media attention has triggered an influx of negative feedback and reviewing capability has temporarily been frozen. Alerts will include a link to a “news article where they can learn more about the incident.”

 

“As the nation reckons with issues of systemic racism, we’ve seen in the last few months that there is a clear need to warn consumers about businesses associated with egregious, racially-charged actions to help people make more informed spending decisions,” the review platform said in the post. The new feature is an expansion of the previous “Public Attention Alert” warning that Yelp placed on the pages of businesses targeted by “social activism” linked by the company to the Black Lives Matter movement.

 

Since May 26, the day after black Minneapolis man George Floyd’s death reignited BLM, Yelp claimed to have placed over 450 such alerts on businesses either targeted by or accused of racism, a 133 percent rise in “media-fueled instances” of review-bombing. Accompanying the rollout is the release of an “inclusive environment” toolkit for small businesses that don’t have the resources to inflict anti-discrimination training on their employees. It's created in partnership with Open to All – an organization that charges businesses $10 to publicize their anti-discrimination policies with a window decal and a “pledge” to welcome all customers regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or other protected characteristics.

 

The inclusivity materials include an hourlong “unlearning bias training video for employees,” social media “assets,” and “outreach language for customers and employees.” Yelp strongly hinted that those looking to be inclusive should join the half-million-plus businesses boasting an “Open for All” icon on their pages, lest they be seen as discrimination-loving reactionaries and lose customers, stating “Increasingly, consumers across the US are voting with their dollars by supporting businesses that align with their values.”

Report: ESPN Preparing to Lay Off Hundreds

 

After years of losing subscribers, ESPN owner Disney is once again looking to lay off hundreds of employees at the cable sports network.

 

By some reports, Disney could pink slip up to 700 ESPN employees as the entertainment giant works to bring the sports network’s costs down more in line with its dwindling reach.

 

According to FrontOfficeSports, the layoffs will affect those employees behind the cameras most, but on-air and radio talent may also be targeted.

 

While most of the big-name talent appears to be safe from these layoffs, insiders say that some will be required to take a pay cut. Pay cuts may also hit some of ESPN’s executives and managers. Talent whose contracts are up soon will also not be renewed, the reports say.

 

Disney is hoping to cut “tens of millions” out of the ESPN operating budget, and the layoffs are only the first step, insiders say.

 

If the expected budget cuts do occur, it will mark the third time in just five years that ESPN instituted sweeping layoffs and a steep budget-cutting campaign.

 

In 2015, ESPN cut 350 employees, and in 2017 the company shed another 100 employees. Also in 2017, the company cut its budget by $80 million.

 

ESPN is not alone in losing customers. In general, cable is experiencing steep declines in customers as Americans cancel their cable and opt for streaming services.

 

In July, for instance, Verizon reported a loss of 81,000 pay-TV subscribers for its FiOS service which is on top of a 25 percent decline in revenue for its media unit.

 

Only months before that, AT&T noted that it had lost 1.4 million in the third quarter of 2019.

Former Commander of Naval Station Guantanamo Bay Sentenced to Prison

 

A former Commander of Naval Station Guantanamo Bay (GTMO) was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison following his multiple convictions of obstructing justice and making false statements, in connection with the death of a civilian at the naval base.

 

Following a five- day trial, on Jan. 17, 2020, a federal jury in the Middle District of Florida convicted Captain John Nettleton, 53, of Jacksonville, Florida, of two counts of obstruction of justice, one count of conealment of material facts, one count of falsification of records, and two counts of making false statements, all related to his actions during the Navy’s investigation of the death of Christopher M. Tur, the Loss Prevention Safety Manager at GTMO’s Naval Exchange.

 

Nettleton was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Corrigan who also ordered Nettleton to serve one year of supervised release.

 

Tur, 42, was found drowned in the waters of Guantanmo Bay on Jan. 11, 2015. An autopsy revealed that Tur had suffered injuries prior to his drowning. At the time of Tur’s death, Nettleton was the commanding officer of GTMO.

 

“Nettleton misled and obstructed the investigators attempting to determine what happened to Mr. Tur, and this sentence ensures that he will pay a heavy price,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Brian C. Rabbitt of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “That price, however, pales in comparison to that paid by the family of Mr. Tur, whose pain was compounded by Nettleton’s actions. The Department of Justice was proud to work closely with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) to hold Nettleton accountable for his obstruction, concealment, and false statements.”

 

“By deliberately misleading NCIS in the search for Mr. Tur and the ensuing investigation into the circumstances of his death, Captain Nettleton delayed justice and wasted valuable Department of the Navy resources,” said Special Agent in Charge Thomas Cannizzo of the NCIS Southeast Field Office. “NCIS is dedicated to holding accountable those who unlawfully impede investigations."

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – More than a hundred voters lined up outside City Hall Thursday to hand in their mail-in ballots to election officials.

 

The ballot drop boxes were rolled out to the sidewalk at 11:30 a.m. and one by one, voters dropped their ballots into the slot.

 

"I want to physically give my ballot to somebody I know will be able to count it. That's why I'm waiting in line," said Marta Bean of Rittenhouse Square.

 

Tonda Rhodes drove from Southwest Philadelphia to hand in her ballot in person because she doesn't trust the United States Postal Service. She said she's worried her ballot could be lost, discarded or destroyed.

"Mr. DeJoy was ordered by a federal judge not to disassemble any more machines. Well, yesterday I received a picture from one of my union officers that showed another machine laying in that scrapyard disassembled for scrap. That makes nine machines in this area," said Casselli.

I created a WordPress plugin based on the DES Chan tripcode naming schema and expanded it to include the more secure encryption standard SHA3, hoping to get additional developer input before releasing it into the repository.

 

Q would have the option to post to any WordPress site that employed the plugin using prior tripcodes.

 

The plugin could also be extended to connect over 455 million WordPress sites with a single username, generated by the NIST SHA3 hashing algorithm, as well as be used to verify voter identity with a hashed signature.

National Economic Security and Recovery Act (NESARA) was a set of proposed economic reforms for the United States suggested during the 1990s by Harvey Francis Barnard. Barnard claimed that the proposals, which included replacing the income tax with a national sales tax, abolishing compound interest on secured loans, and returning to a bimetallic currency, would result in 0% inflation and a more stable economy. In 1993, the U.S. Supreme Court almost unanimously ruled in favor of Farmers’ Union claims that American banks were fraudulently foreclosing on farms with collusion of the government, and that the income tax amendment was never properly ratified.

 

An extremely strict gag order was placed on everyone directly involved, court case records sealed, and docket number case details revised until after the court’s reformation rulings are accomplished.

 

To implement reformations, five justices spent years negotiating “accords” with the U.S. government and other parties. Because the accords process did not work, the justices authorized the reformations be put into the form of a law named the National Economic Security And Reformation Act (NESARA) which was passed secretly in March 2000. Secrecy was maintained by revising official records and strict gag orders. News of NESARA came out of U.S. naval intelligence in June 2000.

 

NESARA requires: 1) end of income taxes; 2) forgiveness of credit card and mortgage debt as remedy for bank frauds; 3) U.S. Treasury Bank system and precious metals backed Treasury currency; 4) restoration of Constitutional Law, and more. Bank presidents and stockbrokers know about the U.S. Treasury bank system.

Court Approves $800 Million Settlement For Las Vegas Shooting Victims

 

A court last week approved a settlement totaling $800 million from casino company MGM Resorts International and its insurers to more than 4,400 relatives and victims of the Las Vegas Strip shooting that was the deadliest in recent U.S. history.

 

The action makes final a deal settling dozens of lawsuits on the eve of the third anniversary of the mass shooting that killed 58 people and injured more than 850 at an open-air concert near the Mandalay Bay resort.

 

“By the grace of God, myself and my family are going to be OK,” said Stephanie Fraser, a plaintiff in the lawsuit from La Palma, California. “I needed to be able to protect our kids.”

 

Clark County District Court Judge Linda Bell, in her brief order, cited “near-unanimous participation in the settlement among potential claimants.”

 

MGM Resorts, which acknowledged no liability, will pay $49 million. Its insurance companies will pay $751 million.

 

Authorities said more than 22,000 people were attending an outdoor music festival when a gunman firing military-style weapons from windows on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay rained rapid-fire bullets into the crowd.

 

Fraser’s husband of 13 years, Brian Fraser, a vice president at a mortgage company, died after being shot in the chest as they danced while country music singer Jason Aldean performed.

 

“Brian is missed beyond words by all of us — all of our family and all of our friends,” Stephanie Fraser told The Associated Press. The couple had four children and stepchildren. She and her attorney, Dan Robinson, declined to say how much they’ll receive in the settlement.

 

“With this coming to an end, it brings closure and allows us to put pieces back together,” Fraser said. “Brian would want that for us.”

 

MGM Resorts, owner of the hotel and the concert venue, acknowledged no liability. It will pay $49 million, while its insurance companies will pay $751 million.

 

“We are grateful that the decision brings families, victims and the community closer to closure,” the company said in a statement. It noted the anniversary of the Oct. 1, 2017, event, calling it “a time of great sadness and reflection.”

 

Memorial ceremonies are scheduled Thursday at several venues in Las Vegas, including a reading of the names of the slain beginning at 10:05 p.m. — the time the first shots rang out.

 

Attorney Robert Eglet, the plaintiffs’ lawyer who spent a year arranging the settlement with clients, legal firms and attorneys in at least 10 states, said the amounts to be disbursed will be determined by two retired judges and he’s hopeful that payments will begin going out by the end of the year.

 

“There’ve been no objections and we expect no appeals,” Eglet told The Associated Press. “We’ll send out notices of the order. After 30 days the $800 million will be deposited.”

 

The case will be dismissed at that time, he added.

 

“Our firm and the other leadership firms hope it helps victims and their families find some sense of closure and healing,” said Mark Robinson Jr., a California attorney representing Fraser and more than one-third of the shooting victims.

 

Eglet previously said that everyone involved “recognized there are no winners in long, drawn-out litigation with multiple trials where people and the community are reliving the event every time we try a case.”

 

A line-by-line list of victims, identified by their initials only, runs for more than 170 pages of a 225-page civil complaint filed Sept. 9 seeking compensation and punitive damages from MGM Resorts. It accused the casino company of negligence, wrongful death and liability in the 2017 shooting.

 

Plaintiffs came from nearly every state in the U.S., at least eight Canadian provinces, the United Kingdom, Iran and Ireland.

 

In various lawsuits, victims and families accused MGM Resorts of failing to protect people at the concert venue or stop the shooter from amassing an arsenal of weapons and ammunition over several days before he opened fire.

 

Millions of dollars could go to the most severely and permanently injured, Eglet said, depending on factors including age, number of dependents, type of injuries, previous and future medical treatment, and ability to work.

 

A minimum $5,000 would go to each person who filed a claim for unseen injuries and did not seek medical attention or therapy.

 

Court filings in the case don’t mention the gunman, Stephen Paddock, who killed himself before police closed in.

 

Las Vegas police and the FBI determined the 64-year-old retired accountant and high-stakes poker player meticulously planned the attack and acted alone. They theorized he may have sought notoriety, but said they never determined a clear motive for the attack.
