NEW YORK (REUTERS) - Ghislaine Maxwell, a longtime associate of the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, will urge a federal appeals court on Tuesday to overturn a ruling she says jeopardizes her ability to defend against criminal charges she enabled Epstein's sexual abuse of girls.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will review a judge's order to unseal sworn testimony related to Epstein, including a April 2016 deposition from Maxwell and a deposition by an Epstein accuser.

Maxwell, 58, has said negative publicity from the disclosure of "intimate, sensitive, and personal" information from her deposition would violate her right against self-incrimination, and imperil a fair trial because jurors might hold it against her.

The British socialite has pleaded not guilty to charges she helped Epstein recruit and groom underage girls as young as 14 years old to engage in illegal sexual acts in the mid-1990s, and not guilty to perjury for having denied involvement under oath.

Maxwell was arrested on July 2 in New Hampshire, where prosecutors said she had been hiding out.

She has been locked up in a Brooklyn jail after U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan, who oversees the criminal case, called her an unacceptable flight risk. Maxwell's trial is scheduled for July 2021.

Epstein, a registered sex offender, killed himself at age 66 in August 2019 at a Manhattan jail while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

Maxwell's request to keep the deposition under wraps is opposed by Virginia Giuffre, who has said Epstein kept her as a "sex slave" with Maxwell's help, and that Maxwell could have invoked her right to remain silent while being deposed.

Giuffre is one of Epstein's most visible public accusers, and believes the public has a right to see Maxwell's deposition, which came from Giuffre's civil defamation lawsuit against her.

That case settled in 2017, and U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska ordered the deposition unsealed in July.

For a U.S. president in the 21st century to still be using their office to keep alive the manufactured myth used to justify the holocaust against the Native Americans that they were too violent to live together in peace with the benevolent European “settlers” is simply too much. It’s so past time for him to go.

Take nothing for granted. You are a Cook. You are far more respected than you know. Speak out about the importance of voting, but please actually work to make sure those you speak to have a realistic plan to fill out a ballot and get it to where it needs to be in time for it to make a difference. If we all do that then this all can be over and the healing can begin.

CDC Study Finds Overwhelming Majority Of People Getting Coronavirus Wore Masks

A Centers for Disease Control report released in September shows that masks and face coverings are not effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19, even for those people who consistently wear them.

A study conducted in the United States in July found that when they compared 154 “case-patients,” who tested positive for COVID-19, to a control group of 160 participants from the same health care facility who were symptomatic but tested negative, over 70 percent of the case-patients were contaminated with the virus and fell ill despite “always” wearing a mask.

Twitter Fined For Multiple Campaign Finance Violations

Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced Tuesday that Twitter would pay $100,000 to Washington's Public Disclosure Transparency Account after violating state campaign finance disclosure laws.

From 2012 to 2019, Twitter received nearly $200,000 for campaign ads but failed to follow Washington disclosure laws by unlawfully failing to maintain public records about the political ads that ran on the platform has resulted in a $100,000 fine.

Jack Dorsey, Twitter's chief executive, said in October 2019 that the social media platform would ban all political ads due to misleading messaging by some candidates.

"We've made the decision to stop all political advertising on Twitter globally. We believe political message reach should be earned, not bought. Why? A few reasons…," Dorsey tweeted last year.

The judgment, filed Tuesday in King County Superior Court, notes that at least 38 Washington candidates and political committees paid $194,550 for political advertising on the platform between 2012-2019.

"Transparency in political advertising is critical to a free and informed electorate," Ferguson said. "Whether you are a local newspaper or a multinational social media platform, you must follow our campaign finance laws."

"The Public Disclosure Commission appreciates the shared commitment of the Attorney General's Office to vigorous enforcement of the state's campaign finance laws," Public Disclosure Commission Chair David Ammons said. "The people of Washington, in their overwhelming vote for the disclosure Initiative 276 nearly a half-century ago, created one of the nation's most emphatic demands for transparency and accountability in campaign finance reporting. As powerful new platforms and commercial advertisers emerge in the campaign world, we must stay vigilant in demanding full compliance with all disclosure laws of Washington state."

Washington's Public Disclosure Commission first received notice from an independent researcher on Oct. 30, 2019, about Twitter's potential violations.

The irony here is, of course, that Twitter - which has been doing everything it can to crack down on political "misinformation" - is now being dinged for failing to share information about its political advertising operation.
