FL House of Representatives Report Shows More than 40% of Florida’s Covid-19 Deaths May Not Merit that Classification

 

A recent report in Florida shows that over 40% of the state’s Covid-19 deaths may not merit that classification.

 

According to Dr. Andrew Bostom at AndrewBostom.org a Florid House of Representatives report covered an investigation of the COVID-19 deaths reported in Florida:

 

 

The Florida House investigators stressed that “nearly 60% [8,058/13.920] of the [COVID-19] records classified by the Department of Health,” had “errors,” or were “recorded in a manner inconsistent with state and national guidance.” They also provided evidence, as noted earlier, that ~10% [1,256] of these alleged Covid-19 deaths were misclassified.

 

I maintain this latter ~10% estimate is far too conservative, and moreover, reflects compliance with the CDC’s April, 2020 Covid-19 death certificate coding guidelines which destroyed the logical firewall between Part 1 “specific cause” of, and Part 2 “contribution(s)” to, individual deaths. Accordingly, to these 1,256 records where Covid-19 is not even listed as the final cause of death, one could add the 175 listing non-Covid-19 immediate and underlying causes, 1,345 occurring in hospice care, and the [3,697-246=] 3451 that somehow classified Covid-19, alone, as both the immediate and underlying cause of death despite acknowledging contributing co-morbidities, or “conditions”. This aggregate mortality total indicates, plausibly, that up to 45% (6,227/13,920) of Florida’s death certificate recorded “Covid-19 deaths” may not merit that classification.

 

What a mess the US medical agencies placed the country as a result of the China coronavirus. The numbers make no sense and are over counted in Florida. No doubt the same has occurred across the nation.

Hunter Biden Witness Moved From Prison Cell After Exposing Influence-Peddling Operation

 

Hunter Biden's former business associate Bevan Cooney, who flipped on the Bidens and exposed an influence-peddling operation, has been moved out of his prison cell, according to Breitbart News.

 

Days after Breitbart News senior contributor Peter Schweizer and journalist Matthew Tyrmand published emails provided by Cooney, federal agents moved him from his cell in an Oregon prison around 11:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday to protect him, according to Tyrmand.

 

"Bevan could sense that things had changed with the rise in visibility of his story," said Tyrmand.

 

Cooney’s family stressed to Tyrmand they are “extremely concerned given the nervousness gleaned from Bevan’s reaction this morning and they would appreciate a sign from the powers that be that Bevan is in protective custody.” It is unclear where Cooney has been moved to, and in whose custody he currently is. -Breitbart

Other emails that surfaced on One News Network showed a deeper relationship between the Bidens and the ex-wife of the former Moscow mayor Elena Baturina. So near and yet so far appears to be the case on US fiscal stimulus. Mnuchin and Pelosi are still talking. The numbers they are talking about are still large (USD1.88 trillion vs. USD2.2 trillion). US President Trump is still talking about an even larger number. Yet we are now under two weeks to Election Day. At this stage, is there any electoral benefit for either side in passing a stimulus bill that won’t actually stimulate anyone to vote one way or the other, or is there more benefit in the blame game? 13 days left to find out.

 

Elsewhere, the IMF MD Georgieva gave a speech called “A New Bretton Woods Moment” – pretty eye-grabbing given the first BW moment built our current geopolitical architecture at the end of WW2, and the second BW moment in the early 1970s saw the end of the gold standard and the introduction of a fiat USD-based system that led us to where we are today.

 

So, what do the IMF (still known as the “I aM Fired” in some emerging markets) have to offer?

 

Section 1 was titled: ‘A sisterhood and brotherhood of humanity’. It notes “Today we face a new Bretton Woods moment. A pandemic that has already cost more than a million lives. An economic calamity that will make the world economy 4.4% smaller this year and strip an estimated $11trn of output by next year. And untold human desperation in the face of huge disruption and rising poverty for the first time in decades. Once again, we face two massive tasks: to fight the crisis today— and build a better tomorrow.” We can all concur there.

 

“We know what action must be taken right now,” adds the IMF. “First of all, we must beat the virus,” and so “continue support for workers and businesses until a durable exit from the health crisis.” Indeed. How we do that is less clear. But I digress.

 

What then? Opportunity beckons! “…we will have a chance to address some persistent problems — low productivity, slow growth, high inequalities, a looming climate crisis. We can do better than build back the pre-pandemic world – we can build forward to a world that is more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive. We must seize this new Bretton Woods moment.” Great! How?

 

Part 2: ‘Building Forward: Three Imperatives’

 

“First, the right economic policies. What was true at Bretton Woods remains true today. Prudent macroeconomic policies and strong institutions are critical for growth, jobs, and improved living standards. One size does not fit all—policies must be tailored to individual country needs….Strong medium-term frameworks for monetary, fiscal and financial policies, as well as reforms to boost trade, competitiveness and productivity can help create confidence for policy action now while building much-needed resilience for the future.”

 

So the “right” economic policies are needed,…and everyone gets to decide what these are themselves. If only we had all realized that while all pursuing all the wrong policies for so long! And didn’t the first BW have fixed exchange rates and capital controls and a rigid, ring-fenced world architecture the IMF now disavows? Today we already have new medium-term policy architecture – and yet central banks are shrugging and asking “what more can we do?” Of course, we must boost trade too, they say. Forget about making anything at home again, or just in case rather than just in time, or diversifying back to industry, where wages and productivity are higher than in services. Also, forget about labor vs. capital and monopoly and monopsony power. (This as the US DOJ files a suit against Google.)

Instagram refuses to remove ‘black art’ depicting severed heads of white people citing ‘differences of expression’

 

Instagram has refused to remove an image depicting two black women holding the severed heads of white people, claiming that “people may express themselves differently” and that the picture doesn’t violate community guidelines.

 

The image, produced by an artist working under the name ‘sugarygarbage’, was shared to a page called ‘supportblackart’ and shows two obese black women posing with the severed heads of a white woman and man.

 

Despite an ongoing crackdown on offensive content, Facebook-owned Instagram refused to remove the ‘black art’, claiming it didn't violate community guidelines.

 

“Because Instagram is a global community, we understand that people may express themselves differently,” Instagram said in response to an enquiry about the piece.

German police are investigating a bizarre case of vandalism at three museums earlier this month, having kept it secret for two weeks. Media reports are tying the incident to satanism, QAnon and other conspiracy theories.

 

According to police, some 70 objects and artefacts sustained “damage that cannot yet be quantified” in the series of attacks which were carried out between 10am and 6pm on October 3 at three sites on Berlin’s Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

 

Police in the German capital have appealed for witnesses and are assuming the vandalism was carried out by a lone perpetrator, but have not ruled out the possibility that several people may have been involved.

 

The treasures which were targeted include ancient Egyptian sarcophagi, a bust of the Egyptian queen Nefertiti, the second century BC Pergamon Altar and 19th-century paintings held at the Pergamon Museum, the Neues Museum and the Alte Nationalgalerie were doused with an oily liquid causing extensive damage.

Twitter has made users jump through an additional hoop before they retweet a message on their platform, as part of a series of temporary measures purportedly designed to fight disinformation ahead of the US election.

 

In a blog post, the company announced that people who want to retweet a message will be directed to the ‘quote tweet’ composer, where they’ll be encouraged to add a comment before publishing the tweet. However, users can leave the composer blank and simply click the retweet button without adding their own commentary.

 

Additionally, starting next week, Twitter will direct people who try to retweet messages that are flagged as misleading or harmful toward “credible information about the topic before they are able to amplify it.”

 

The company will also add new warnings and restrictions on tweets written by US political figures that are deemed misleading. US-based accounts with more than 100,000 followers, or accounts that “obtain significant engagement,” will also be subjected to heightened monitoring.

 

Twitter said that the new measures were designed to clamp down on the spread of misinformation that could potentially interfere with November’s presidential election. The temporary changes are also designed to encourage “thoughtful consideration” before tweeting, the company argued.

Ex-Rosneft CEO Says Rothschild Drained His Funds Via Kickbacks

 

A former chief executive of Russian oil company Rosneft has accused one of Europe’s oldest banks of conspiring with New York brokers in a kickback scheme that caused him to lose more than half of his $150 million investment portfolio.

 

Sergei Bogdanchikov accused banking group Edmond de Rothschild of steering his funds to a pair of New York firms that he says lost money on bad investments and charged inflated fees to kick commissions back to the bank. The bank also used the now-defunct Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca to form shell companies to hide the scheme, according to a lawsuit Bogdanchikov filed in New York state court on Wednesday.

 

Rothschild issued falsified account statements to Bogdanchikov showing the value of his assets growing, papering over tens of millions of dollars in losses from inflated commissions and wrong-way bets, including one on a convertible bond for an Indian company that went bankrupt, according to the complaint. In all, Bogdanchikov claims he lost $81 million of his original principal.

 

One of the firms that handled the money, Fontanelle Capital Inc., lists its business address at an apartment building in Brighton Beach, a New York neighborhood that is home to a large Russian immigrant population. The other firm, OIM Capital LLC, was founded just months before it began managing Bogdanchikov’s funds. OIM owner Mikhail Filimonov lives with the ex-wife of Fontanelle’s co-owner, Vladimir Oblonsky, according to the suit.

 

Among the evidence offered in the suit, Bogdanchikov’s lawyers cite a March 2014 email from a Rothschild executive to Oblonsky saying: “Pls credit my Q4 comm to my AB card” and “You have to pay me.”

 

Messages left for representatives of Edmond de Rothschild in France seeking comment on the suit weren’t returned late Friday evening in Europe. A message left at Filimonov’s home wasn’t returned. Oblonsky and his wife, Fontanelle co-owner Olga Oblonsky, are both named as defendants. Messages seeking comment on the suit that were left on mobile phone numbers registered to the couple weren’t returned.

 

OIM Capital terminated its investment adviser registration in June. In its last filing, it listed four clients in pooled investment vehicles with assets under management of less than $26 million.

 

Bogdanchikov had sued Rothschild earlier in Europe but didn’t learn about the alleged role of the New York brokers until this year, according to the suit.

Police in Bolton, England, Arrest 21 Men in Child Sexual Exploitation Investigation

 

Greater Manchester Police have announced the arrest of 21 men aged 18 to 58 as part of an ongoing investigation into child sexual exploitation (CSE).

 

Officers from the police force’s Bolton division arrested five men in Bolton, Bury, and Chorley on suspicion of engaging in sexual activity with a female child on October 15th.

 

This follows the arrest of eight men “on suspicion of offences ranging from rape of a female child and engaging in sexual activity with a female child” on October 6th, according to an official Greater Manchester Police statement, with another eight men having been arrested prior to that as part of an investigation first launched in 2018.

 

The arrested men have all been released on bail, with some conditions, as the investigation continues, while their 11 alleged victims are “continuing to be supported by GMP and partner agencies”.

UK Paid £320 Million to CCP Linked Firms During China Virus Outbreak

 

The British government sent up to £320 million to Chinese companies with links to the ruling communist party (CCP) during the rush to acquire ventilators and protective gear for healthcare workers in the initial outbreak of the China virus pandemic.

 

The Department for Health and Social Care reportedly inked ten contracts worth £148 million with direct ties to the communist regime in Beijing. The Department for Health in Northern Ireland also sent between £60 to £170 million to the state-backed China Resources firm in June for personal protective equipment (PPE).

 

One of the Chinese companies which raked in millions of British taxpayer money was China Meheco — a subsidiary of the state-owned China General Technology Group — which signed four deals with the UK totalling £18 million in exchange for PPE and ventilators, according to The Telegraph. One of China General Technology Group’s other subsidiaries supplies the Chinese military with weapons and equipment.

 

Other companies that profited from the UK’s response to the Wuhan virus were state-backed exporter Beijing Union Glory Investment, which was given over £100 million in UK contracts, and state-run Sinopharm, a Chinese pharmaceutical firm, which was granted £31 million in April and May.

 

In response to the hundreds of millions sent to companies with links to the CCP, the Conservative Party chairman of the Foreign Affairs select committee, Tom Tugendhat, said: “We need to reduce dependence on companies controlled by states that seek to use that leverage to influence our actions and those of our allies.

 

“That means building up partnerships with others and reducing our reliance on China’s state-owned businesses.”

Former Mexican Defense Secretary Denied Bail in U.S. Drug Case

 

A federal judge in California denied bond for the former Mexican Secretary of Defense after his arrest on drug conspiracy charges. The former official will now be moved to New York until his trial at a later date.

 

During a streamed hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Alexander MacKinnon ordered Salvador “El Padrino” Cienfuegos be held without bond due to flight risk. The judge first heard arguments over a $750,000 bond requested by Cienfuegos’ attorney.

 

Federal authorities arrested Cienfuegos last week in California as he landed with his family for a vacation. The Mexican general is named on an indictment accusing him of drug conspiracy charges. Federal prosecutors alleged that in his role as a top military official tasked with fighting cartels, Cienfuegos worked closely with the Beltran Leyva Cartel (identified as “H2 Cartel”) and leaked sensitive U.S. law enforcement information.

 

Cienfuegos is the highest-ranking Mexican military officer to ever face drug charges in a U.S. court. His arrest comes months after federal authorities arrested Mexico’s former top law enforcement official, Secretary of Public Security Genaro Garcia Luna. In a separate case, U.S. authorities alleged that Garcia Luna and at least three other peers took millions in bribes from the Sinaloa Cartel to protect their operations.

Four newborn babies have died after they were denied lifesaving treatment due to coronavirus-related lockdown travel restrictions implemented by politicians in Australia.

 

“Four Newborns in Adelaide have died after being denied lifesaving heart surgery because it wasn’t available in Adelaide, and they couldn’t be transferred interstate because of travel restrictions,” reported 9News Australia.Their deaths have sparked outrage from medical professionals in the area demanding change.

 

“Medical professionals in South Australia are calling for urgent action this morning following shocking revelations of the deaths of four babies,” said a 9News Australia anchor on-air, Tuesday. “The newborns were denied lifesaving heart surgery because it wasn’t available in Adelaide, and they couldn’t be transferred interstate because of travel restrictions.”

 

“Adelaide is the only capital city in mainland Australia that doesn’t have its own infant cardiac unit,” he noted.

 

“As one obstetrician said yesterday, ‘I shall leave it to you to image the profound effects of these deaths on the parents,'” the anchor added.

 

The lockdown measures in Australia have been particularly severe. For example, The Wall Street Journal noted Sunday that politicians in Victoria, which includes Melbourne, finally said they “would ease some of its harshest restrictions, such as forbidding people from leaving their homes for all but a handful of reasons and keeping offices and retail outlets mostly shut, after daily infections fell to just two from a peak of more than 700.”

 

The Guardian, on Monday, laid out travel restrictions pertaining to South Australia as follows:

 

South Australia – People from all states and territories except Victoria can enter South Australia without having to quarantine for 14 days so long as they haven’t been in Victoria in the past fortnight. South Australian residents will not be allowed to return to their state from Victoria unless they are essential travellers. Victorians living within 40kms of the SA border are allowed into the state for essential purposes only. They can not travel more than 40kms into SA and must have had a negative Covid-19 test in the last 7 days and complete a registration form.

 

According to the report, gatherings in private homes in South Australia are limited to 50 people, “including members of the household, as long the maximum density does not exceed one person per two square meters.”

 

In New South Wales, the restrictions are even more strict, per The Guardian: “On Sunday 19 July, the government issued advice asking people not to host, or go to, a gathering of more than 10 people at home. But the law in NSW currently allows 20 people from different households to visit. There is no limit to the number of guests you can have over per day, as long as there are no more than 20 at a time and guests can stay overnight. If there are more than 20 visitors at a home, every person can be held individually responsible for a breach of the public health order.”

UK PM launches scathing attack on London mayor for 'bankrupting' Transport for London

 

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson accused London Mayor Sadiq Khan of having “effectively bankrupted” Transport for London (TfL) before the pandemic hit, as coronavirus bailout negotiations turned into a fiery standoff.

 

Khan has called on the UK government to provide a £5.7 billion coronavirus relief package, as TfL falters with commuters staying at home and abandoning the capital’s transport network.

 

During his latest weekly Prime Minister’s Questions session in the House of Commons, Johnson lashed out at Khan, claiming that “the current Mayor of London had effectively bankrupted Transport for London before coronavirus had even hit,” and arguing that “any other measure taken to improve the finances of TfL are entirely the responsibility” of the Labour politician.

 

In return, Khan has claimed that the government demanded that he increase fares, expand the size of the congestion zone and implement a slate of other revenue-raising efforts, which the mayor has so far rejected, as they would violate his key pledge to freeze the cost of single fares.

 

The government has threatened to take direct control of TfL if Khan rejects the measures proposed in return for bailout funds. The deadline for a deal to be agreed was initially set for last Friday, but has now been pushed back by another two weeks, with TfL set to hold an important board meeting on Wednesday with the London mayor.

 

The fiscal situation in the UK’s capital city is a personal issue for Johnson who, prior to his return to parliament and rise to prime minister, served as mayor of London for eight years from 2008-2016, leaving the city in, what he claims, was “robust health.” Khan hit back at the prime minister’s statement by accusing him of having “lied to the House of Commons” before defending his policies that he claims were in the process of “fixing his mess at TfL – reducing the deficit by 71 percent since 2016.”

PayPal will allow users to buy, sell and shop using cryptocurrencies including bitcoin & ethereum

 

PayPal has jumped into the cryptocurrency market and plans to allow its customers to buy, sell and hold bitcoin, ethereum and other virtual currencies using their online wallets.

 

The new feature, which was announced on Wednesday, is expected to be implemented in 2021. At that stage, users will be able to use cryptocurrencies for shopping at the 26 million merchants in PayPal’s existing network.

 

“The shift to digital forms of currencies is inevitable,” PayPal President and CEO Dan Schulman said in a statement. He added that providing easy access to the cryptocurrencies market would increase the “efficiency, speed and resilience” of the payments system.

 

PayPal says it wants to encourage wider use of digital coins and is also preparing for new types of virtual currencies that may be developed in the future. “We are working with central banks and thinking of all forms of digital currencies and how PayPal can play a role,” Schulman told Reuters.

 

First, PayPal will allow purchases of bitcoin, ethereum, bitcoin cash and litecoin. While the service has technically already been launched, it will become available to PayPal account holders in the US only “in the coming weeks,” according to the statement.

 

PayPal is not the only fintech company to get into the cryptocurrency market, but its vast reach, with more than 346 million accounts worldwide, makes its move into the realm notable. The company processed $222 billion in payments in the second financial quarter of 2020 alone.

NY Post’s Hunter Biden Laptop Story Topped Social Media Despite Twitter Censorship

 

Despite Twitter’s best efforts at slowing the spread of a New York Post story alleging evidence of international influence peddling within the Biden family, the story blanketed social media, becoming the lead political story last week, according to a Wednesday report from Axios.

 

“Facebook and Twitter’s frantic attempts to stop the spread of the New York Post’s Hunter Biden story didn’t prevent the article from becoming the top story about the election on those platforms last week, according to data from NewsWhip,” Axios noted.

 

The numbers are significant. NewsWhip found that the New York Post’s story “generated 2.59m interactions (likes, comments, shares) on Facebook and Twitter last week — more than double the next biggest story about Trump or Biden,” even though, for part of that time, Twitter actively prevented users from sharing the URL for the Post’s story, on the theory that it violated their policy against “hacked” materials.

 

The Post’s official Twitter feed was also suspended on Wednesday of last week and remains out of commission.

 

Despite that, the response to the story was significant, per Axios:

 

5 of the 10 biggest stories were about the Hunter Biden story, the fallout, or how Facebook and Twitter reacted.

It was the 6th-most engaged article this month, trailing pieces like Trump testing positive for COVID-19 and Eddie Van Halen’s death.

83% of the interactions happened on Facebook, with the other 17% on Twitter.

 

The censorship campaign, the outlet notes, became a story in itself — the second biggest story of last week, narrowly trailing the Hunter Biden laptop revelations.

 

“Behind the Biden story itself, Facebook and Twitter’s response to the report was the second biggest topic last week,” Axios said, based on the NewsWhip data. “The backlash largely came from the right, which accused the tech platforms of meddling in the election through inappropriate censorship.”

 

In addition, Twitter’s decision to censor the Post’s story resulted in an official complaint to the FEC from the Republican National Committee alleging that the decision to block the Post’s story amounted to an in-kind donation to Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, and triggered Congressional action. The Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committees both expressed interest in hearing from Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on whether the respective social media platforms viewed themselves as publishers.

 

As the Daily Wire reported earlier this week, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology reported that Twitter’s decision to suppress the story “nearly doubled” the story’s visibility.

Russian analyst says he is in hiding and “afraid for his life” after being unmasked by top congressional Republicans as the source behind the Steele dossier on Donald Trump and Moscow.

 

In his first-ever interview Igor Danchenko said he is the victim of a smear campaign by the president and the Republican senator Lindsey Graham. Both have repeatedly alleged that Danchenko is a suspected Russian spy who fed disinformation to Christopher Steele, the former MI6 officer.

 

Danchenko said he was not a Kremlin operative. He added that the accusation had made him a target for the pro-Trump radical right and left him effectively unemployed. “It’s a stigma. Being a ‘Russian spy’ is quite different from being James Bond. There are myths,” he told the Guardian.

 

He is now threatening to take legal action against Trump. Last week Danchenko’s lawyer, Mark E Schamel, sent a cease-and-desist letter to Pat Cipollone, the president’s counsel. It said Trump had endorsed and retweeted “completely unsubstantiated lies”, which damaged Danchenko’s professional reputation and were “endangering his life”.

 

The letter added: “These allegations of treason and espionage are extraordinarily serious. They are also completely false. Yet the president continues to publish these and similar false statements about Mr Danchenko with disregard for Mr Danchenko’s safety and reputation.”

‘Nobody Should Be Thrown Out’: Pope Francis Endorses Same-Sex Civil Union Laws

 

Pope Francis came out in support of civil union laws for same-sex couples, according to a new documentary that premiered Wednesday in Rome.

 

“Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family,” Francis said in “Francesco,” a new film about his life and papacy, according to Catholic News Agency. “They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out, or be made miserable because of it.”

 

“What we have to create is a civil union law,” the pope continued. “That way they are legally covered. I stood up for that.”

 

“Francesco,” according to its website, is “a film that shows us the world as it is today and a path to understanding a better future for tomorrow, through the remarkable work of Pope Francis. It is a search for hope, humanity, compassion, unity, and redemption inside the darkness of our times.” Its trailer highlights some of the pope’s comments on the coronavirus pandemic, the environment, and clerical sex abuse, as well as his oblique condemnation of President Donald Trump’s border wall as “not Christian.”

 

Francis has raised eyebrows before for making comments many believed departed from millennia-old teachings of the Catholic Church regarding homosexuality, though Pope Francis was merely outlining dogma in a more public way than his predecessors. A few months into his pontificate in 2013, Francis noted that the Church makes a distinction between homosexual acts, which he maintained are sinful, and homosexual orientation, which he said is not. Regarding the rumored “gay lobby” in the Vatican, Francis responded, “If a person is gay and seeks God and has goodwill, who am I to judge?”

 

“The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains this very well,” Francis continued. “It says they should not be marginalized because of this but that they must be integrated into society.” He also condemned lobbying by the gay community or any community. “The problem is not having this orientation. We must be brothers. The problem is lobbying by this orientation, or lobbies of greedy people, political lobbies, Masonic lobbies, so many lobbies. This is the worse problem.”

 

Francis has nevertheless remained adamant that practicing gay men should not be priests. As The Daily Wire reported:

 

After months of seemingly avoiding the issue following the Pennsylvania grand jury report that alleged 300 predator priests molested (mostly male) victims over a 75-year period while church hierarchy covered it up, Pope Francis has given perhaps the harshest denunciation of his pontificate regarding homosexuality in the priesthood.

 

According to the New York Post, Pope Francis “unequivocally” stated over the weekend that “homosexual men should not be admitted into the Catholic clergy and gay priests should practice celibacy or leave the church.”

 

“There’s no room for that kind of affection,” Pope Francis said regarding same-sex attracted men in the priesthood.

"They were the first in fact, to start labeling some of the president's tweets as misinformation," he added. "I think that was a very bold, important move. He went on to cite a study saying the president and other leaders were the greatest purveyors of misleading information.

 

The president has said that social media platforms like Twitter allow him to bypass the media and reach his supporters directly.

US Wasted Billions of Taxpayer Dollars in Afghanistan From 2018 to 2019

 

US government oversight authority released its latest report

 

The 19-year-old war in Afghanistan continues to be a huge sinkhole for US taxpayer dollars. The US government’s oversight authority that monitors waste in Washington’s Afghanistan reconstruction effort released a report this month updating its findings.

 

The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) found that as of December 31st, 2019, Congress appropriated almost $134 billion to Afghanistan reconstruction since the 2002 fiscal year. Of that amount, SIGAR reviewed about $63 billion and found approximately $19 billion or 30 percent was lost to waste, fraud, and abuse.

 

Between January 1st, 2018, and December 31st, 2019, SIGAR found an additional $3.4 billion was lost to waste, fraud, and abuse. Of that total, SIGAR identified $1.5 billion in taxpayer funds that were lost to waste, $300 million lost to fraud, and $34 million lost to abuse. The remaining $1.6 billion was allocated to counter-narcotics, which SIGAR believes was also wasted.

 

In a 2018 report, SIGAR described US counter-narcotics efforts in Afghanistan as a “failure.” A UN report from 2019 found Afghanistan is the source of 80 percent of the world’s illicit opium production despite the billions of US taxpayer dollars being spent to stop it.

 

Since SIGAR was formed in 2008, the oversight authority has investigated approximately 44 percent of the $134 billion spent by the US on Afghanistan reconstruction. According to Brown University’s Costs of War project, as of September 2019, the US has spent $2 trillion on the war in Afghanistan. The number includes interest on borrowed money used to fund the war and money spent on care for veterans.

Intelligence officers in charge of briefing President Donald Trump on threats against the nation are reportedly “terrified” of speaking to him about Russia out of fear of how the president will react.

“No one’s going to brief anything on Russia to the president,” Marc Polymeropoulos told GQ correspondent Julia Ioffe. “They’re terrified of doing that. I know that from the briefers. Because he’ll explode and the whole thing will get derailed, because he has this weird affinity for [Russian President Vladimir] Putin.”

Asked why Putin is such a touchy subject, Polymeropoulos said that Trump “wants Putin to like him.”

 

“He doesn’t want to be embarrassed in front of Putin, that’s part of the dilemma,” he said.

 

“Just look at how he behaves with the Queen. That’s how he behaves with everyone who has any glamour and cachet,” he continued, adding, “Putin has everything he doesn’t have.”

USAA Bank Fined $85 Million by Federal Regulators for 'Violations of Law'

 

USAA Federal Savings Bank must pay the U.S. government an $85 million fine after regulators found failures in the company's compliance risk management and information technology risk programs.

 

The decision, announced Oct. 14, was made by the Office of the Comptroller of Currency (OCC), a U.S. Treasury bureau tasked by law with overseeing banks.

 

USAA Federal Savings Bank is part of USAA, which has about 13 million military and veteran-affiliated members.

 

"The OCC took this action based on the bank's failure to implement and maintain an effective compliance risk management program and an effective information technology risk governance program," the announcement states. "These deficiencies resulted in violations of law, including but not limited to violations of the Military Lending Act and the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act."

 

USAA Bank's problems with risk management and compliance processes and technology were first announced in an OCC consent order in early 2019. At that time, USAA Bank agreed to a series of steps and deadlines to address the problems, detailed in a 21-page report. No penalty was levied at that time.

 

The newly announced fine, USAA Bank officials said in a fact sheet on their website, is related to how the bank addressed those issues.

 

"USAA Bank has worked closely with the OCC, our primary banking regulator, since the original agreement was announced and will diligently continue to do so until these issues are resolved," the fact sheet states.

 

USAA Bank "engaged in violations of law, including but not limited to violations of the Military Lending Act and the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act [SCRA]," according to the new OCC consent order and "engaged in unsafe or unsound practices and violations of law, which were part of a pattern of misconduct."

 

A separate OCC report, conducted in 2019 but released early this month, dropped the bank's Community Reinvestment Act performance evaluation rating from "satisfactory" to "needs to improve."

Defense Sectary Visits Hawkish Atlantic Council to Announce US Troop Buildup on Russia Border

 

US Defense Secretary Mark Esper visited the notorious Atlantic Council, funded by a who’s who of weapons makers and despotic regimes, to announce that the US would not, indeed, be withdrawing troops from Germany but sending them to Russia’s border instead.

 

The United States was supposed to be sending thousands of troops home from Germany. But Secretary of Defense Mark Esper announced yesterday that they would instead be redeployed eastwards, right on the Russian border in some cases, supposedly to deter “growing Russian and Chinese threats.”

 

“It’s common sense,” the senior Trump administration official said. “You don’t need to be Napoleon or MacArthur to look at the map and realize that the further east you are, the more reassurance you could provide for those allies and partners on the frontlines—whether it’s in the northeast, it’s the Baltic states, Poland, just due east of Germany, or in Bulgaria and Romania in the southeast along the Black Sea.” Thus, for the U.S. government, the “frontline” against an “aggressive” Russia includes countries that until recently were a part of the Soviet Union and that sit directly on Russia’s border. In July, Trump announced the impending withdrawal of thousands of U.S. armed forces from Germany (a country it has militarily occupied since World War Two).

 

Esper was speaking at the Atlantic Council, an influential think tank started as a NATO cutout organization funded by Western governments, Middle Eastern dictatorships, weapons companies like Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, and Boeing, as well many of the world’s largest corporations such as Goldman Sachs, BP, and FedEx.

 

The administration’s plan to ramp down the U.S. military presence from 36,000 troops to 24,000 was met with overwhelming hostility in Washington when it was first announced in July; the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives even included an amendment to its version of the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act to block funding for any withdrawal. Both Republican Sen. Mitt Romney and CNN described the idea as Trump’s “gift to Russia,” while Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez claimed that “champagne must be flowing freely this evening at the Kremlin.” Thus, the news of a change of course will likely be greeted warmly in “resistance” circles.

 

A new arms race

 

Even during a worldwide pandemic that has destroyed the economy, the U.S. government is strong-arming its allies, NATO and non-NATO alike, into rearming for a potential global war against both Russia and China. Esper presented the United States as a protector nation, unfairly having to pay for the defense of other countries. “To overcome the increasingly complex threats in the 21st century and defend our shared values, there can be no free riders to our common security,” he said, adding that it was imperative that other states “share the burden” and increase their military spending to at least two percent of their gross domestic product “as the floor.” “We also expect them to be ready, capable, and willing to deploy when trouble calls. And we expect them to stand shoulder to shoulder with the United States in confronting Chinese bad behavior and Russian aggression,” he added.

 

What is this Chinese and Russian aggression? Esper noted an increased Chinese military presence in the South China Sea, where throughout the summer, the U.S. has also been expanding its footprint. U.S. warships have been patrolling as close as 41 nautical miles from the Chinese coast. He pointed to the Russian presence in Ukraine (a country the U.S. is also flooding with weapons) as justification for the “defensive” action of sending thousands of troops mere miles from Russia itself.

 

Esper also called for a wholescale “modernization” of the military and the arms industry, which, he claimed, had too many restrictions on it regarding foreign sales, meaning the West’s “asymmetric advantage” was at risk. But, as many have explored previously, “modernization” is a favorite political euphemism used when wanting to discuss or promote a new arms race.
