How the Media Distort Reality – Filtering Out the β€œImportant Stuff”

β€œThe sinister fact about literary censorship in England is that it is largely voluntary. Unpopular ideas can be silenced, and inconvenient facts kept dark, without any need for an official ban” (George Orwell(1))

 

If our media were trying to cover world events each day honestly, then the headlines would repeatedly say things like:

 

β€œUS and Britain commit more war crimes in the Middle East”

β€œThousands persecuted by tyrants supported by US and Britain”

 

This does not happen because our current media are not trying to give us an honest explanation of what is really happening in the world. This does not mean that the media is necessarily telling lies (although it frequently does). It is mostly presenting distorted versions of events. This is usually known as the Propaganda Model of the media, which is analysed at length in a famous book called Manufacturing Consent, by Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky, first published in 1988.

 

The book explains that the beliefs of journalists, the ownership of the media by governments or big corporations, advertising, and the sources of information for news stories, all create a system which filters out topics and opinions that are considered β€˜undesirable’.(2) That is, topics or opinions that challenge powerful interests, such as governments or big corporations. In particular, the media are uncritical of British and US war crimes, and they are not sufficiently critical of the profit-driven economic system. The main reasons for this are discussed below. These are sometimes called the five filters.

 

1) Conflicts of Interest: Ownership by Corporations and Governments

 

The media in the US and Britain is mostly controlled by a small number of big corporations,(3) with the exception of the BBC, which is controlled by the government. As with all corporations, the power rests with a few people at the top. Journalists are just employees who can be hired and fired. Putting forward radical or controversial views is likely to annoy people in power. Corporations do not want journalists who are troublemakers or whistleblowers. Presenters and journalists quickly realise that media owners will not tolerate certain types of critical stories. Insiders in the US media have admitted that they back away from controversial stories that might offend their audience. Those who are very critical of big business and government foreign policy will not make it to the anchor position on mainstream news programs and will find it difficult to get a job with the major newspapers.(4) They may even be fired. A famous example of this was when the US MSNBC presenter Phil Donahue was critical of the Iraq war in 2003 and was quickly fired. MSNBC is owned by General Electric, who are one of the US’s biggest weapons companies. They did not want anti-war voices on the channel.(5)

 

2) Advertising – Do Not Bite The Hand That Feeds You

 

The bulk of the funding for most newspapers and television channels comes from advertising by major corporations. A number of these, such as BP and Morgan Stanley, have stated that they will not advertise with publications that they consider β€˜objectionable’,(6) which really means any that question their right to make unlimited profits, or that question the way they do business. Companies that sell weapons do not want stories that show the horror of war; tobacco companies do not want stories about children getting addicted to cigarettes in Malawi. They want the media to focus on stories that make their readers and viewers receptive to advertising. Favorable news stories, known in the industry as puff pieces, can be bought by advertisers. In many local papers, the editorial mostly fills the space between advertisements. When discussing the qualities required of journalists, one senior newspaper executive stated:

 

β€œwhat you want are people who can execute your strategy…to create editorial to support maximizing revenues from display advertising”.(7)

 

There is a conflict of interest if the primary goal of the media, as with other businesses, is to make profits, and the main source of revenue is the advertising. Under these circumstances, the media will not present the most critical stories. Ultimately, ratings and corporate profit are more important than honest news.

Members of the Michigan legislature will continue their inquiry into reported irregularities in the 2020 election, a state lawmaker revealed this week, despite growing pressure to abandon further scrutiny of the 2020 presidential election results amid fallout from the recent Capitol riot.

 

The riot at the U.S. Capitol came amid a pro-Trump "Stop the Steal" rally to protest the certification of Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 election. Trump himself spoke at the rally, urging participants to "show strength" and "be strong" in their protests of the certification.

 

Though the president stressed that the protests should be done "peacefully and patriotically," the mayhem that numerous rally attendees soon generated at the Capitol has been laid mostly at his feet by many, with Democrats and pundits claiming the riot was largely spurred by his months-long insistence that the election was stolen from him.

In Michigan, inquest will continue

 

Yet though that pressure will likely intensify up to and beyond Joe Biden's inauguration later this month, lawmakers in Michigan will continue inquiries into that state's handling of this year's presidential race.

 

Daire Rendon, who represents Michigan's District 103 in the state House, confirmed to Just the News that the investigations teed up by the Michigan legislature last month will continue after state lawmakers convene on Wednesday.

 

"I have spoken with [House Oversight Committee] Chair Matt Hall," Rendon, a Republican, told Just the News. "It is his goal to continue the oversight hearing on the election."

 

Rendon noted that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has placed "a lot of restrictions" on how lawmakers can meet in the state capitol.

 

"We do not have a lot of committee rooms that are large enough to handle the committee work while allowing the public to attend," she said. "I think the hearings better serve the public when we can have people come into the hearings. It has a lot more impact than just doing it by Zoom."

 

Still, she said, House members are working to arrange the hearings ahead of the legislature's convening.

The scandal this has produced in Italy is so large that Conte’s government will probably fall. It should. That this has happened is being repressed by the U.S. media. No surprise about this but, because this is the biggest story since Pearl Harbor, I don’t believe it can be swept under the rug. The bad guys, those like Chuck Schumer and even some Republicans, know it’s coming. This is why they want to get rid of President Trump once and for all.

The F.B.I. arrested two men on Sunday who were photographed in the Senate chamber clad in military-style clothing and holding zip ties, according to a statement issued by the Justice Department.

 

One of the men, Eric Gavelek Munchel, 30, was taken into custody in Nashville on one count of unlawfully entering a restricted building and one count of violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, the department said. One of the officials involved in the case said authorities also recovered several weapons at the time of his arrest.

 

The department also said that photographs of a person who appeared to be Mr. Munchel showed him β€œcarrying plastic restraints, an item in a holster on his right hip, and a cell phone mounted on his chest with the camera facing outward, ostensibly to record events that day.”

 

Efforts to reach Mr. Munchel before his arrest were unsuccessful.

 

The other man, Larry Rendell Brock, was arrested in Texas on the same charges after he was allegedly identified as one of the people who broke into the Capitol. The department said in its statement that images of a person who appeared to be him showed Mr. Brock clad in β€œa green helmet, green tactical vest with patches, black and camo jacket, and beige pants holding a white flex cuff, which is used by law enforcement to restrain and/or detain subjects.”

 

The two men are among the more than dozen people charged by federal authorities in connection with the attack on Congress. Internet researchers pieced together what was thought to be their identities in the days after the siege. Investigators in Washington, Tennessee and Texas are working on the cases; and the cases will be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington and the counterterrorism section of the Justice Department’s National Security Division.
