he University of Southern California has agreed to an $852 million settlement with more than 700 women who have accused the college’s longtime campus gynecologist of sexual abuse, the victims’ lawyers and USC announced Thursday.

 

It’s believed to be a record amount for such a lawsuit. When combined with an earlier settlement of a separate class-action suit and other, smaller state court settlements, USC has agreed to pay out more than $1 billion for claims against Dr. George Tyndall, who worked at the school for nearly three decades.

 

Tyndall, 74, faces 35 criminal counts of alleged sexual misconduct between 2009 and 2016 at the university’s student health center. He has pleaded not guilty and is free on bond.

 

Hundreds of women came forward to report their allegations to police but some of the cases fell outside the 10-year criminal statute of limitations, while others did not rise to the level of charges or lacked sufficient evidence to prosecute. Still, he faces up to 64 years in prison if convicted.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Announces Sanctions on 'Relevant UK Individuals and Entities'

 

Earlier, the United Kingdom imposed sanctions on Beijing based on allegations of human rights abuse in Xinjiang. The move was slammed by China as "based on nothing but lies and disinformation."

 

China's Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday that it will impose sanctions on several UK entities and individuals, following allegations of human rights abuse in the region of Xinjiang.

 

Beijing sanctioned nine persons, among them Tom Tugendhat, Iain Duncan Smith, Neil O'Brien, David Alton, Tim Loughton, Nusrat Ghani, Helena Kennedy, Geoffrey Nice and Joanne Nicola Smith Finley. The four entities that were subjected to Beijing sanctions are the China Research Group, the Conservative Party Human Rights Commission, the Uyghur Tribunal and the Essex Court Chambers.

 

"As of today, the individuals concerned and their immediate family members are prohibited from entering the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao of China. Their property in China will be frozen, and Chinese citizens and institutions will be prohibited from doing business with them. China reserves the right to take further measures", the foreign ministry stated.

 

Earlier, the United Kingdom sanctioned the government of Chinese President Xi Jinping over allegations of human rights abuses in Xinjiang. According to Beijing, the accusations are based on "nothing but lies and disinformation". After London slapped sanctions on the Beijing government, the British Ambassador to China was summoned by Vice Foreign Minister Qin Gang, who condemned the move and pledged "legitimate responses to UK's wrongdoings."

 

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying, commenting on the matter earlier in the week, said that allegations of human rights abuse are "a pretext for interfering in China's internal affairs and frustrate China's development."

 

"People of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang, including the Uyghurs, enjoy each and every constitutional and lawful right. The fact that Xinjiang residents of various ethnic groups enjoy stability, security, development and progress, makes it one of the most successful human rights stories," she insisted.

 

On Monday, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia in a joint statement denounced China for alleged human rights violations in the Xinjiang province, calling on Beijing to stop its "repressive practices" in the region.

 

Earlier, Western countries described the situation in Xinjiang as a "genocide" of the Uyghur ethnic group, particularly claiming that Uyghurs are being sent to "re-education camps", claims that Beijing has consistently denied.

On Tuesday, a motion was unsealed in the Ghislaine Maxwell case that give us serious concerns about the government’s case against Maxwell.

I directed the FBI, DEA, OCDETF, and the Department’s Criminal Division to identify top transnational criminal organizations that threaten our safety and prosperity.

The subcommittee on the Sinaloa Cartel will be led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Sutton of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California.

 

AUSA Sutton prosecuted several Sinaloa kingpins and led multiple international investigations targeting Sinaloa Cartel leaders, resulting in seizures of millions of dollars in drug proceeds and thousands of kilograms of illicit drugs.

 

The subcommittee on Clan del Golfo will be led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Emery of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida. AUSA Emery has secured convictions against the top leadership of Clan del Golfo, including the kingpin Henry de Jesus Lopez LondoΓ±o, who commanded over 1,000 armed men for the cartel.

 

The subcommittee on Lebanese Hezbollah will be led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ilan Graff of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. AUSA Graff is overseeing the prosecution of two alleged members of Hezbollah’s External Security Organization, the first such operatives to be charged with terrorism offenses in the United States.

 

This subcommittee will be led and staffed by members of the Hezbollah Financing and Narcoterrorism Team, which is a group I created in January.

 

This team is composed of experienced international narcotics trafficking, terrorism, organized crime, and money laundering prosecutors who are tasked with investigating individuals and networks providing support to Hezbollah.

CNN Bleeds 45% of Audience in Just Five Weeks

 

Barely two months into the post-Trump era, news outlets are indeed losing much of the audience and readership they gained during his chaotic presidency. In other words, journalism’s Trump bump may be giving way to a slump.

 

After a record-setting January, traffic to the nation’s most popular mainstream news sites, including The Washington Post, plummeted in February, according to the audience tracking firm ComScore. The most deeply affected network is CNN. After surpassing rivals Fox News and MSNBC in January, the network has lost 45 percent of its prime-time audience in the past five weeks, according to Nielsen Media Research. MSNBC’s audience has dropped 26 percent in the same period. Fox News β€” the most Trump-friendly of the three networks in its prime-time opinion shows β€” has essentially regained its leading position by standing still.

 

Trump himself famously predicted that the mainstream media would suffer if he didn’t occupy the Oval Office, predicting as much all the way back in 2017. β€œNewspapers, television, all forms of media will tank if I’m not there,” Trump said then, β€œβ€œbecause without me, their ratings are going down the tubes.”

 

During Trump’s four years in office anti-Trump viewers tuned in to major news stations at record numbers for what became dependably negative coverage of his administration. According to one study, 92% of the coverage of Trump at major news outlets was negative.

With the COVID-19 pandemic still underway in 2021, experts continue to conduct research to further understand and combat the worldwide outbreak. With the virus disproportionately affecting various populations such as the elderly, those with pre-existing health conditions, and communities of color, a recent study conducted by Harvard University and the Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) found that those with blood type A are also among those populations more susceptible to contracting COVID-19 (via News 19).

 

John Armitage, M.D., of the OBI states that beginning last year, OBI had begun offering antibody testing to those wanting to donate blood to the center. Testing showed the presence of COVID-19 antibodies in the majority of donors with either blood type A or AB. Conversely, donors with blood type O were found to have the least amount of antibodies present. These findings indicate that those with A or AB blood types seem to have higher rates of COVID-19 infection.

 

Studies indicate those with blood type A may be more prone to COVID-19 infection than those with blood type O

 

As described by Dr. Armitage, medical experts believe that the reason these individuals may be more high-risk is due to the fact that those with blood type A possess cells in their respiratory system that offer a "sticky environment" for the virus to more easily attach to (via The Jerusalem Post). He further explains, "The As have a substance very similar to their A blood group that's lining their lungs and their bronchi and respiratory tract."

 

This research aligns with studies conducted in late 2020 published in Blood Advances by the American Society of Hematology. The research indicated that those with blood type O were least likely to contract the COVID-19 virus and were less likely to experience critical outcomes such as organ failure, or the need for dialysis or ventilation than those with blood types A, B, or AB (via Science Daily).Β 

 

It's important to note that while these studies propose a potential link between blood type and COVID-19, it cannot yet be confirmed as the sole cause of infection. Further research is still needed to rule out other potential variables as experts anticipate that results are likely to vary across different countries and ethnic groups.

Two men arrested by counter-terrorism police in Brisbane and Melbourne

 

Two men have been arrested in Melbourne and Brisbane by counter-terrorism police over their alleged involvement in a Queensland-based network.

The Australian Federal Police said the men "are alleged to have played senior roles in a South-East Queensland-based syndicate who maintained religiously motivated violent extremist ideology and a desire to travel to Syria to engage in hostile activities".

Both men have been charged after their arrests.

 

One of the men appeared in the Melbourne Magistrate's Court yesterday and will be extradited to Queensland.

The second man is expected to face the Brisbane Magistrate's Court today.

Dr. Shanna Swan, a professor of Environmental Medicine & Public Health at Mount Sinai Health System, has warned in a new book that phthalates, a chemical commonly used in the manufacturing of plastics, can shrink penises and decrease male fertility.

A study listed in the National Center for Biotechnology Information, which operates under the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, found that the microplastics used in the manufacturing of Covid face masks contain a number of toxic chemicals, including the penis-shrinking phthalates.

Dr. Swans’s book β€œCount Down: How Our Modern World Is Threatening Sperm Counts, Altering Male and Female Reproductive Development, and Imperiling the Future of the Human Race” warns that humanity is facing an β€œexistential crisis” in fertility rates as a direct result of the chemical phthalates, and most men may be infertile by 2045.

 

As Sky News reported, Dr. Swan found that β€œmale human babies who had been exposed to the phthalates in the womb had a shorter anogenital distance – something that correlated with penile volume.” Dr. Swan’s research also discovered that rats exposed to phthalates were born with shrunken genitals.

 

Other sources have also documented the link between phthalates and decreased male fertility. WebMD reported in 2009 on a study by Swan that found young boys whose mothers were exposed to high levels of phthalates were more likely to exhibit non-masculine behavior and less likely to β€œplay with trucks and other male-typical toys or to play fight.”

 

A doctor who reviewed Swan’s study for WebMD found β€œexposure to the chemicals can cause a wide range of male reproductive harm, including undescended testicles, birth defects of the genitals, and infertility later in life.”

 

Even the CDC, which claims the effects of phthalates on human health are β€œunknown,” admits β€œSome types of phthalates have affected the reproductive system of laboratory animals.”

It took more than a year, but the Ohio legislature finally managed to clip Gov. Mike DeWine’s wings when it comes to his overreaching COVID-19 mandates. Ohioans are still suffering through DeWine’s draconian diktats, including an ongoing mask mandate, social-distancing rules, and crippling indoor dining regulations. One day after DeWine vetoed Senate Bill 22, the Senate voted 23-10 to override his veto. A short time later, the House voted 62-35 to do the sameβ€”the first time the legislature has overridden DeWine since he took office in 2019.

 

S.B. 22, which doesn’t take effect for 90 days, grants the legislature the authority to cancel emergency health orders with the adoption of a concurrent resolution. While aimed at Gov. DeWine, the new law changes the rules for orders emanating from the health department, which DeWine, a Republican, has used to keep the state locked down for more than a year. The new language further states that the health department β€œshall not reissue that special or standing order or rule or rescinded portion thereof… for a period of 60 days following the adoption of a concurrent resolution striking them down.”

 

The bill also limits the power of local health officials to force people to self-quarantine without a specific medical diagnosis. It also gives Ohioans the right to challenge the constitutionality of state health orders in a court of law, and to recover legal costs.

The FAA is now involved, issuing a statement saying that they are "investigating communications that an airline pilot made while taxiing at Mineta San Jose International Airport," noting that "the FAA also reported the incident to the airline."

 

The Gate discovered that the airline in question is Southwest, and the company confirmed that it was one of their pilots caught on the hot mic.

 

"Our corporate Culture is built on a tenet of treating others with concern and dignity and the comments are inconsistent with the professional behavior and overall respect that we require from our Employees," a Southwest spokesman told the newspaper in a statement. "This situation was an isolated incident involving a single Employee and not representative of the nearly 60,000 hardworking, respectful People of Southwest Airlines."

Combined Law Enforcement Action Halted a Human Smuggling Attempt

LAREDO, Texas – Laredo Sector Border Patrol and Laredo Police Department (LPD) halted a human smuggling attempt in west Laredo near the downtown area.

 

After conducting a welfare check with LPD, agents discovered 49 individuals being held against their will in several apartments at the address. An immigration inspection revealed that the individuals are illegally in the U.S. and from the countries of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador. The illegal aliens were taken into custody for processing by Border Patrol. Also seized by LPD were several firearms found at the residence.

 

All the individuals were medically screened as none were wearing any personal protective equipment (PPE).

 

 

Laredo Sector Chief Patrol Agent Matthew Hudak said, β€œThe collaborative work done by the officers and agents involved resulted in the apprehension of forty-nine persons, including two unaccompanied minor children, and the seizure of multiple firearms. This case highlights the dangerous nature of stash houses and their proximity and potential danger to neighboring residences and community.

 

Despite a noted increase in COVID-19 infections among detainees, the smuggling and housing of large groups of individuals in cramped quarters without PPE not only endangers the people being smuggled, but the safety of our Nation.

The owner, Mike Brar, told me in thirty years he had never cancelled a movie and he didn’t expect to start now.

 

But finally, when the day of the book signing came, and we all showed up β€” the theatre doors were locked and were kept us out.

 

So I did my book launch on the street outside!

 

Well, fast forward to today.

Mike: apology accepted. And I really think he means it. I just don’t think he had ever been treated that way by the mob. You know how cruel people can be on the Internet.

What was so gross is that some of the mob were professors and staff at the University of Alberta. How awful is that β€” professors banning book launches. That’s disgraceful, frankly.

HARRISON, Ark. (KY3) - Arvest Bank announced this week it will close dozens of bank branch locations, including six in the Ozarks.

The past year has introduced many challenges to the banking industry and accelerated existing trends in consumer preferences and behavior. Most significant for Arvest Bank has been a shift in the balance between branch transactions and digital banking. In response to these significant changes in customer banking preferences, Arvest has conducted an in-depth analysis and will make changes to its branch network in 2021.

As part of this reconfiguration, Arvest will close 31 of the bank’s 270-plus branch locations this summer. More than one-third of the facilities to close are limited-service branches and the vast majority of impacted branches are in markets with other nearby branches available to serve customers.

 

This branch transformation strategy includes plans for construction of eight new facilities and 15 remodeling projects over the next 12-18 months. The bank also plans to deploy 38 additional ATM with Live Teller machines throughout its network. These machines allow customers to have face-to-face communication with Arvest tellers via a video screen and complete more types of transactions than a traditional ATM. They also offer standard ATM capabilities 24 hours a day.

 

Arvest anticipates there will be a limited number of associates affected by these changes. Well-trained and committed associates are the pillar of Arvest’s success and it is the bank’s desire to retain as many associates as possible by helping them secure other roles at Arvest locations.

Former Idaho university professor, Black Lives Matter spokesman, arrested for defacing Lincoln statue

 

Efforts to cancel Abraham Lincoln, the 16th U.S. president, have accelerated following the death of George Floyd last summer, with proponents of Black Lives Matter claiming that the president who promoted the 13th Amendment, ending slavery throughout the United States, did not do enough for black people.

 

On Tuesday, a Black Lives Matter activist in Boise, Idaho, was arrested for allegedly vandalizing a statue of the Republican president. Terry Joe Wilson, 37, was arrested after a warrant was issued last week.

 

The Idaho Statesman reports that Wilson, formerly an adjunct professor at Boise State University and who has been described in local media as a Boise Black Lives Matter chapter spokesman, was identified as one of the suspects in the vandalism incident, which occurred in February.

 

β€œPolice responding to reports of vandalism discovered the bronze statue of Lincoln in Julia Davis Park β€” known as 'Seated Lincoln' β€” vandalized with feces, paint and signs,” the Idaho Statesman reported. β€œParks and recreation staff were able to clean the statue, which was not permanently damaged.”

 

The Boise Police Department said that the suspect fled from officers when he was first approached. When police tracked him down a week later, he was found in possession of a firearm, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

 

β€œOfficers chased after Wilson and were able to stop him and take him into custody, at which time Wilson was found to be in possession of a firearm, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia,” said a police press release. β€œWilson was taken to the hospital and was medically cleared before being booked into the Ada County Jail.”

 

Wilson has since been charged with several misdemeanours, including injuring monuments, ornaments, and public improvements, resisting and obstructing officers, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, the Idaho Statesman reports.

 

A quick glance at Wilson’s Instagram page shows him ranting against β€œfascist Donald Trump and neoliberal Joe Biden,” and expressing support for Black Lives Matter.

US Appeals court rules bump stock devices are not β€˜machine guns’

 

The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Thursday that bump stock accessories cannot be considered β€œmachine guns” and thus not subjected to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) ban.

 

On Dec. 26, 2018, ATF classified plastic bump stock accessories as β€œmachine guns” defined in the Gun Control Act and National Firearms Act, despite them having no ability to fire on their own. The move came after former President Donald Trump’s Feb. 20, 2018 memo ordering the Attorney General to develop the ban, which was spurred by reactions to the deadly Oct. 2017 Las Vegas shooting carried out using bump stocks affixed to rifles.

A mayor in Arizona declared a state of emergency Tuesday as the Biden administration’s immigration policy wreaks havoc on the Gila Bend community.

 

FOX 10 Phoenix reports that U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Monday dropped off 16 illegal immigrants, including young children, at a park in Gila Bend, which has a population of 2,000.

 

Additionally, Mayor Chris Riggs, who has repeatedly warned that his town does not have the resources to house the illegals, noted earlier this month that he was seeing some 20 unknown illegals a day walk into the town.

 

As the town battles an uptick in violence, Riggs says he’s not even being informed on the illegal immigrants’ identities, potential criminal background, or COVID-19 infection status.

Governor Brian Kemp, a Republican, signed the Election Integrity Act of 2021 into law on Thursday, just hours after it was approved in the state legislature: 100-75 in the House of Representatives and 34-20 in the Senate.

 

The law requires a valid photo ID for voting by mail, reduces the window to request mail-in ballots, and regulates the placement and duration of ballot drop boxes. It also replaces the secretary of state with a legislature-appointed official, as the chair of the state board of elections, and allows the board to fire county election officials for failing in their duties.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) β€” Arvest Bank will close 31 of its 270-plus branch locations effective at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 30, the bank announced today.

 

According to a release from Arvest on Wednesday, the move comes in response to β€œsignificant changes in customer banking preferences.”

 

The closures will affect two locations in Fayetteville, two branches in Fort Smith, one in Rogers, and seven other Arvest locations around the state.

 

According to Arvest, there has been a significant shift in the β€œbalance between branch transactions and digital banking,” and more than one-third of the facilities set to close are β€œlimited-service branches.”

 

β€œThe vast majority of impacted branches are in markets with other nearby branches available to serve customers,” the company said in its release.

 

Arvest anticipates there will be a limited number of associates affected by these changes. Well-trained and committed associates are the pillar of Arvest’s success and it is the bank’s desire to retain as many associates as possible by helping them secure other roles at Arvest locations.

Arvest’s β€œbranch transformation strategy” includes plans for construction of eight new facilities and 15 remodeling projects over the next 12-18 months, while the bank also plans to deploy 38 additional ATM with β€˜Live Teller’ machines throughout its network, which allow customers to communicate with Arvest tellers via a video screen and complete more types of transactions than a traditional ATM.
