EU Rules AstraZeneca Vaccine Can Cause Blood Clots but Claims Benefits Outweigh the Risks

The European Medicines Agency (ESA) has ruled that the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine can cause unusual blood clots in the brain, but said the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks that you may keel over and croak.

Nothing quite says “We love you” more than government-run healthcare.

The committee said there had been 18 deaths reported in its review of 62 cases of CVST (a clotting in the sinuses that drain blood from the brain) and 24 cases of splanchnic vein thrombosis (in the abdomen) that were reported in an EU drug safety database. The cases came mainly from spontaneous reporting systems of the European Economic Area and the UK, where around 25 million people in total had received the vaccine, it noted.

If AstraZeneca’s vaccine is so safe, why hasn’t it been approved for use in the United States?

Few of us could ask for a dose of a vaccine, take it home, and test it to see if it works and that it’s safe. This is the government’s job and the EU — in the midst of another serious wave of Covid-19 infections — is desperate to get the virus behind them. They approved the AstraZeneca vaccine with inadequate testing and now they want to pass it off as “almost” foolproof.

A vast majority of people who are vaccinated will not sicken and die. But reports are coming in from all over Europe of the blood clots and other serious complications that have placed a cloud over the distribution of the vaccine.

The agency published its conclusion as the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency held a press conference on the same issue, five days after its weekly report confirmed at least 22 people had experienced CVST and at least eight cases of thrombosis events with low blood platelet counts, which is a relatively rare combination.

The EMA decision also follows a move in Germany, which last week suspended the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine in people under 60 years old after 31 reports of CVST. Twenty-nine of the 31 were women aged 20 to 63, and nine of the patients died, according to a Reuters report citing the country’s medicines regulator.

What to do about the blood clot problem? The ESA thought about it, debated it, and decided that it was enough just to add the blood clots and low platelet counts to the list of possible “side effects.”

“Side effects could include, headache, nausea, soreness, weakness…and death.”

EMA Executive Director Emer Cooke told a press conference Wednesday that the agency would add the clots and low platelet counts to its list of possible side effects from the vaccine, but added the safety committee “has confirmed that the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine in preventing Covid-19 overall outweigh the risks of side effects” and that that EMA’s recommendations for use of the vaccine were not changing.

There are now three other vaccines on the market that don’t cause blood clots or low platelet count. There certainly haven’t been reports of nine deaths — although one or two deaths are still being looked at with the vaccines as a possible cause. By all metrics, the other vaccines available in the U.S. are superior in efficacy and safety.

It’s irresponsible for the EU to continue offering this vaccine to the general public, regardless of the “emergency.”

The WHO Confirms that the Covid-19 PCR Test is Flawed: Estimates of “Positive Cases” are Meaningless. The Lockdown Has No Scientific Basis

The Real Time Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (rRT-PCR) test was adopted by the WHO on January 23, 2020 as a means to detecting the SARS-COV-2 virus, following the recommendations of a Virology research group (based at Charité University Hospital, Berlin), supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Exactly one year later on January 20th, 2021, the WHO retracts. They don’t say “We Made a Mistake”. The retraction is carefully formulated.

While the WHO does not deny the validity of their misleading January 2020 guidelines, they nonetheless recommend “Re-testing” (which everybody knows is an impossibility).

The contentious issue pertains to the number of amplification threshold cycles (Ct). According to Pieter Borger, et al

The number of amplification cycles [should be] less than 35; preferably 25-30 cycles. In case of virus detection, >35 cycles only detects signals which do not correlate with infectious virus as determined by isolation in cell culture…(Critique of Drosten Study)

The World Health Organization (WHO) tacitly admits one year later that ALL PCR tests conducted at a 35 cycle amplification threshold (Ct) or higher are INVALID. But that is what they recommended in January 2020, in consultation with the virology team at Charité Hospital in Berlin.

If the test is conducted at a 35 Ct threshold or above (which was recommended by the WHO), segments of the SARS-CoV-2 virus cannot be detected, which means that ALL the so-called confirmed “positive cases” tabulated in the course of the last 14 months are invalid.

According to Pieter Borger, Bobby Rajesh Malhotra, Michael Yeadon, et al, the Ct 35 has been the norm “in most laboratories in Europe & the US”.

The WHO’s Mea Culpa

Below is the WHO’s carefully formulated “Retraction”. The full text with link to the original document is in annex:

WHO guidance Diagnostic testing for SARS-CoV-2 states that careful interpretation of weak positive results is needed (1). The cycle threshold (Ct) needed to detect virus is inversely proportional to the patient’s viral load. Where test results do not correspond with the clinical presentation, a new specimen should be taken and retested using the same or different NAT technology. (emphasis added)

WHO reminds IVD users that disease prevalence alters the predictive value of test results; as disease prevalence decreases, the risk of false positive increases (2). This means that the probability that a person who has a positive result (SARS-CoV-2 detected) is truly infected with SARS-CoV-2 decreases as prevalence decreases, irrespective of the claimed specificity.

“Invalid Positives” is the Underlying Concept

This is not an issue of “Weak Positives” and “Risk of False Positive Increases”. What is at stake is a “Flawed Methodology” which leads to invalid estimates.

What this admission of the WHO confirms is that the estimate of covid positive from a PCR test (with an amplification threshold of 35 cycles or higher) is invalid. In which case, the WHO recommends retesting: “a new specimen should be taken and retested…”.

The WHO calls for “Retesting”, which is tantamount to “We Screwed Up”.

That recommendation is pro-forma. It won’t happen. Millions of people Worldwide have already been tested, starting in early February 2020. Nonetheless, we must conclude that unless retested, those estimates (according to the WHO) are invalid.

FinCEN Begins Making Rules For Corporate Transparency Act

The U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) asked last week for the public to comment on a series of questions about the new beneficial ownership reporting requirements of the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA), according to an Advance Notice of Public Rulemaking (ANPR).

FinCEN.svgFinCENThe act targeted financial crimes like money laundering and terrorist financing by requiring corporations and limited liability companies to report details about their beneficial owners and thus, ending the anonymity of malign actors perpetrating these crimes.

“The ability to engage in activity and obtain financial services in the name of a legal entity without disclosing the identities of the natural persons who own or control the entity—the natural persons whose interests the legal entity most directly serves—enables those natural persons to conceal their interests,” the ANPR said.

“As FinCEN has previously highlighted, such concealment ‘facilitates crime, threatens national security, and jeopardizes the integrity of the financial system,’” it said.

Changes in these regulations comes after an international outcry to crack down on anonymous shell companies. Led by ICIJ and Buzzfeed News, the OCCRP and several other outlets published in 2020 the FinCEN files, exposing the role of financial institutions in wide-scale money laundering. In December, more than 20 international organizations called on the United Nations to crackdown on anonymous shell companies.

The rulemaking process allows for the public to have a say in the regulations created to enforce the act. The ANPR asked the public to answer a range of questions pertaining to the CTA including how to define key terms, suggestions on reporting procedures and what type of information should go into reports.

Beneficial ownership information will be organized into a non-public database maintained by FinCEN and available to law enforcement and financial institutions bound by customer due diligence as long as they have the consent of the customer, according to the act.

Experts like Jim Richards, founder of RegTech consulting who has 20 years of experience in financial crimes, delivered praise for the new regulations with a healthy dose of skepticism. One of the stated goals of the CTA is to facilitate the sharing of information with the goal of curbing financial crime, but Richards questioned the effectiveness of a database as it is lined out so far in a recent article he wrote for RegTech.

“Financial institutions’ access to the database is severely restricted, and the punishing requirements imposed on federal, State, and Tribal government agencies to gain access to the information in the database may dissuade many of them from using it at all,” Richards said.

He also raised concerns about possible loopholes in the CTA, specifically when it comes to reporting exceptions for companies he refers to as “tall, dark, and handsome”- corporations or llcs which have a minimum of 20 employees, US$5 million in revenue and a physical office in the U.S.

Theoretically, by creating the right kind of facade criminals could create a corporation which would not be required to report its beneficial owner under the CTA.

Nothing is set in stone yet, the public is allowed and “strongly encouraged” to submit comments on the rules through May 5, 2021, according to FinCEN. The new rules which will enforce the actions required by the CTA must be finalized by January 1, 2022.

Couple in Mexico hoists brother and sister, ages 5 & 6, over boulders and abandons them at the border

JACUMBA, Calif.—U.S. Border Patrol agents rescued two children who had been abandoned along the border near Jacumba Monday afternoon.

At approximately 3 p.m., agents spotted a man and woman walking just south of the border with two small children. Watching the couple, agents observed them hoist the small children over large boulders in an area where the border wall ends at the side of a mountain abutting the large boulders.

Agents quickly arrived in the area finding the children alone and crying. The children, a six-year-old boy and five-year-old girl, were unable to communicate with agents except for providing their names.

The children were transported to a nearby Border Patrol station for care and processing. At the station, the children provided agents a handwritten note which had their mom’s name and phone number on it. The siblings also had their mom’s name and phone numbers written in marker on their forearms.

Agents contacted the mother and were able to obtain additional information for the children. The children were processed and will be transferred to the Department of Health and Human Services.

“It is unconscionable that anyone would abandon these small children and those responsible for smuggling events like this will be aggressively prosecuted,” said Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke. “Thankfully, our agents were able to quickly rescue these siblings.”

The Arizona legislature authorized a full and comprehensive audit of Maricopa County’s 2020 election ballots.

The Maricopa County board of elections has thrown every roadblock against the state legislature trying to block the audit. However, a state judge agreed with the legislative intent and affirmed the authority of the audit. Part of the audit authorization (included in the state’s audit instructions) was for a limited canvassing of actual voters; meaning the auditors can go to the homes/locations of people/groups and verify they actually voted or submitted the ballots attributed to them. This ability to go directly to the source has triggered a politically connected legal team known as “Protect Democracy” into another level of panic. The Protect Democracy group uses Clinton’s infamous law firm Perkins Coie.

Perkins Coie is threatening the contracted auditing agency, Florida-based Cyber Ninjas, with legal action if they follow through with their authority and question the voters who are attributed as sources of thousands of ballots in single geographic locations. [Perkins Coie Threat Letter Here]

Retired Lt. Gen. Honore calls 'BS' on Capitol Police, rioters, in latest commentaries

The former Army three-star general has continued his run of spirited observations.

Within a day of describing a security assessment from the U.S. Capitol Police union chief as "BS," retired Lt. Gen. Russel Honore on Tuesday said that rioters breached the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 after being told "a little BS about what they want to hear."

Honore made his most recent comments on April 6 while he appeared on a video panel to address extremism in the U.S. armed forces and police agencies. Honore, who in January was appointed by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to lead a task force to examine security at the Capitol, deviated from the panel's topic, and presented his views on what caused the Jan. 6 breach.

The former Army three-star general said that the attack was the result of "propaganda" that gave people "a little BS about what they want to hear."

"I think we've been had by a little propaganda and a superb use of information operation, which is an offensive weapon to shape people's minds," Honore said during the panel organized by the Atlantic Council. "And again, just tell them a little BS about what they want to hear, a sliver of truth and have them act on it."

The comments followed a Monday press appearance wherein Honore seemingly both contradicted and agreed with a union official regarding the state of the Capitol Police.

Over the Easter weekend, Capitol Police union chief Gus Papathanasiou said that the department has 233 fewer officers than the allotted 2,000-member force.

"We are struggling to meet existing mission requirements even with the officers working massive amounts of forced overtime," Papathanasiou said in a statement. "In the next 3-5 years we have another 500 officers who will be eligible to retire. Many of these officers could put in their retirement papers tomorrow."

Honore on Monday dismissed the union chief's comments, while also seeming to support them.

"That's BS," Honore said April 5 on CNN. "The Capitol Police can meet the mission. The former Army officer noted that he understands the "enthusiasm" to hire more officers, but the union chief's claim is an "overstatement."

Honore also said, however, that his task force report addressed the staffing issue.

"We made the recommendation that they need to get the funding to recruit and hire the 233 officers they are short," Honore said. "We made a recommendation to hire another additional 800 officers. Those recommendations are there, it's up to Congress to take action."

While Honore's most recent comments are notable for their contradictions and use of the term "BS," military observers who know the longtime infantry officer privately noted that the comments are far from being "full Honore."

Earlier this year, Honore drew ire from Republicans, particularly from Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, after critiquing police. The outspoken retired general, known for his role during Hurricane Katrina, sounded off in a tweet against Hawley.

"This little piece of s— with his @Yale law degree should be run out of DC and Disbarred ASAP," Honore reportedly wrote in a now-deleted tweet.

In another tweet that still appears on his feed, Honore wrote of Colorado Republican and gun rights activist Rep. Lauren Boebert: "Put Her Stupid A– on the No Fly List."

Honore now frequently gives seminars and speeches to private clients. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Just the News.

Billionaire tech investor Peter Thiel slammed Silicon Valley leaders for outsourcing vital technologies to the Chinese Communist Party.

Joined by former secretary of state Mike Pompeo and former national security adviser Robert O’Brien at a Tuesday seminar on China, Thiel said his peers in the tech industry act as "useful idiots" for the interests of Beijing by transferring innovative American technology to the oppressive regime. The entrepreneur and founder of PayPal pointed to companies such as Google that export artificial intelligence and facial recognition technology to China, tools used to oversee the genocide of Uyghur Muslims in Western China.

"It’s some combination of wishful thinking. It’s useful idiots, you know, it’s CCP fifth column collaborators," Thiel said of Silicon Valley administrators. "I think if you think of it ideologically or in terms of human rights or something like that, I’m tempted to say it’s just profoundly racist. It’s like saying that because they look different, they’re not white people, they don’t have the same rights. It’s something super wrong."

O’Brien accused Silicon Valley leaders of hypocrisy for preaching "woke" pieties about social justice issues in the United States while ignoring crackdowns on human rights and political freedom within China.

"In Silicon Valley, we’ve got … a very woke industry in general about what’s happening here," O’Brien said. "Yet it’s not very woke in what’s happening to the Uyghurs, what’s happening to the Tibetans, what’s happening to the democrats with a small ‘d’ in Hong Kong, the threats against Taiwan where you’ve got the indigenous people of Taiwan. So, there seems to be less concern about those folks in Silicon Valley and industry in general than the concern for woke progressive politics here."

Part of the tech problem, Thiel said, also comes from American companies refusing to cooperate with the Pentagon and instead pivoting to Beijing. In order to right the ship, he said, the United States must take a more active role in pressuring private companies to divorce from Chinese markets.

"We need to call companies like Google out on working on AI with Communist China, not with [the] U.S. military," Thiel said. "I think we should be putting a lot of pressure on Apple with its whole labor-force supply chain on the iPhone manufacturing in China…. There is [this] obviously crazy double standard where labor laws don’t apply there, but do apply here and all sorts of crazy double standards, and you need to call people out on that relentlessly. I think the cyber security is simply a mess as far as I can tell."

A major element of the conflict with China is an ideological struggle, Pompeo said. Beyond preparing the American tech industry for competition with China, Americans must also "be unashamed" about addressing abuses perpetrated by the Chinese Communist Party, he said.

"We will know who ultimately wins this by which ideas dominate the next 10, 20, 40 years," Pompeo said. "We need to be unashamed about talking about that, whether on college campus or at a PTA meeting or at the United Nations."

Navy fires Hopper CO

The commanding officer of the guided-missile destroyer Hopper was relieved of command Tuesday “due to a loss of confidence in her leadership,” the Navy announced.

While the announcement of Cmdr. Kathryn J. Dawley’s firing did not include a reason for the relief, a Navy official who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the matter said Wednesday that it was based on the commander’s “overall performance in this critical leadership billet,” and that no investigation spurred the firing.

Capt. Don Rauch, deputy commander of Destroyer Squadron 31, has assumed temporary command of the Hawaii-based warship.

Dawley took command of Hopper in October 2018.

Months before she took command, another Hopper CO, Cmdr. Jeffrey Tamulevich, was fired as commander of the ship in May 2018 after an investigation determined that he had a sexual relationship with one of his petty officers.

Former FBI Employee Sentenced for Receiving Bribes and Tax Fraud

James Heslep Received $128,128 for Influencing FBI Contracts; Sentenced to 39 Months in Prison

POCATELLO - Former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) official James Heslep, 52, of Gainesville, Virginia, was sentenced to 39 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for receiving a bribe by a public official, Acting U.S. Attorney Rafael M. Gonzalez, Jr. announced today. Heslep was also sentenced to 36 months in federal prison followed by one year of supervised release for making and subscribing a false federal income tax return. The sentences will run concurrently. U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill also ordered Heslep to forfeit $128,128 and pay $15,353 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service. In the related case, Robert Bailey, 63, of Centreville, Virginia, pleaded guilty to paying a bribe to a public official. Bailey’s sentencing is set for May 5, 2021.

“A 39-month sentence is significant and sends the appropriate message to Mr. Heslep and other public officials entrusted with influence over government contracts,” said Gonzalez. “Public service is a public trust. The people of Idaho must be confident that when that trust is breeched, there will be severe consequences no matter who you are or where you work. This investigation, this prosecution, and this sentence delivers that message clearly and forcefully.”

According to court records, Heslep was a Management and Program Analyst with the FBI. In that position, Heslep was responsible for managing construction and services contracts for FBI buildings across the country.

According to court records, in 2001, Bailey, purchased L-1, a construction management and operations company located in Chantilly, Virginia. In 2008, Heslep and Bailey became business acquaintances when they worked together on an FBI construction project.

According to court records, in 2017, the FBI broke ground on the construction of a data center in Pocatello, Idaho (the Pocatello Data Center project). The Pocatello Data Center project involved construction of a two-building, 140,000 square-foot complex that would accommodate data halls containing computer equipment and office space. The purpose was to consolidate multiple FBI data centers from across the country and improve efficiency and cyber-security. In 2017, Heslep became the Contracting Officer Representative (COR) for the Pocatello Data Center project. In that position, Heslep had management and oversight responsibilities over the construction of the Pocatello Data Center.

According to court records, from 2016 through 2018, Bailey and L-1 made illegal payments, and gave items of value, to Heslep. These payments included 18 deposits totaling $120,000 into a bank account controlled by Heslep. From this account, Heslep made payments on a personal loan, home mortgage, car, credit card, and vacation travel payments, among other personal expenditures at retail stores, such as a pair of diamond earrings that cost $5,300. In addition, Bailey and L-1 provided the following items of value to Heslep: a fiftieth birthday party in Dallas, Texas, including first-class airfare, hotel accommodations, and tickets to a Dallas Cowboys football game; a beach house rental in Nags Head, North Carolina; first-class Amtrak train tickets; invitations to a L-1 company holiday party; and tickets to a Washington Nationals baseball game, among other gratuities. The total value of the unlawful payments and gratuities was $128,128.

“Heslep abused his position as a government contracting officer. He accepted bribes of cash, sports tickets, and other items of value in exchange for granting favorable contracting terms. This sentencing shows that this kind of fraud will not be tolerated,” said Douglas B. Bruce, Special Agent in Charge of the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General Denver Field Office.

Lock Haven Man Sentenced To 30 Years’ Imprisonment For Producing Child Pornography

WILLIAMSPORT - The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced that Michael Grenninger, age 38, of Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, was sentenced on April 6, 2021, to 360 months' imprisonment to be followed by a 10-year term of supervised release by U.S. District Court Judge Matthew W. Brann, for producing child pornography.

According to Acting U.S. Attorney Bruce D. Brandler, Genninger sexually abused an eight-year-old child and photographed the abuse. Genninger also produced videos of minors ranging from age eight through their early teens engaged in secually explicit conduct. Additionally, Genninger attempted to arrange meetings with 11-year-old girls in Virginia and New York City for sex, and sent a pornographc image of himself over the internet.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Pennsylvania State Police, the Clinton County District Attorney’s Office, and the Christiansburg (Virginia) Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Geoffrey W. MacArthur prosecuted the case.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys' Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims. As of 2009, Stuart Forrest was identified as a volunteer at Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center. In November 2020, Michelle Vilchez was interviewed in her role as executive director of the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center. Guess what her background is? She worked on developing the strategic plan for First 5 County San Mateo. Dr. William Ayres also worked on developing that strategic plan.

San Mateo is rife with sex scandal. In 2007, federal authorities raided a network of Las Vegas brothels in an operation called Operation Doll House, which found illegal immigrant prostitutes. The San Mateo county sheriff and undersheriff were found inside a sleazy brothel during the raid, but were not prosecuted despite media scandal. Democrat congresswoman Jackie Speier later held a gun buyback in 2013 with a sheriff who was present in the brothel, and headlined another gun buyback in 2018 with the other law enforcement officer who was present in the brothel.

JPMorgan's Dimon Admits "Something Has Gone Terribly Wrong" In America… And China Knows It

As his bank tries to offload big blocks of Manhattan real estate, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon proclaimed in his latest annual letter to shareholders, published Wednesday morning, that the economic expansion in the US could run through 2023, which would justify lofty equity valuations which recently pushed the S&P 500 north of 4K.

And the CEO who once called for the US to raise taxes on the rich and adopt more explicitly socialist policies to expand access to higher education, housing and child care, praised the federal government's response to the economic crisis caused by the COVID pandemic. Consumers who are now flush with savings will help drive an economic boom, Dimon wrote in his 34K-word missive.

"I have little doubt that with excess savings, new stimulus savings, huge deficit spending, more QE, a new potential infrastructure bill, a successful vaccine and euphoria around the end of the pandemic, the US economy will likely boom," Dimon said.

"This boom could easily run into 2023 because all the spending could extend well into 2023."

"Ascertaining the quality of the government's spending will take years, Dimon said, but he has little doubt that "spent wisely, it will create more economic opportunity for everyone," he said.

Although equity valuations are already "quite high", Dimon aid a multi-year boom may help to justify current levels, because markets are pricing in economic growth and excess savings that may soon be poured into the market.

ICE removes convicted rapist from US to Mexico

PORTLAND, Ore. — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers removed a convicted rapist and public safety threat, with multiple sexual assault convictions in Oregon, from the United States to Mexico, Tuesday.

Juan Cortez-Magdaleno, 53, is a Mexican citizen who was granted legal status in the United States in 1991. On Nov. 10, 2004, Cortez-Magdaleno, came to the attention of ERO officers following convictions for two counts of rape in the first degree, sodomy in the first degree and sexual abuse in the first degree, for which he was sentenced to 405 months in prison. ERO officers lodged an immigration detainer with the Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC) the same day.

ICE lodges immigration detainers on individuals, like Cortez-Magdaleno, who have been arrested on local criminal charges and who are suspected of being removable, so that ICE can take custody of that person when he or she is released from local custody.

“The immigration detainer allows ICE to take custody of individuals who are deemed public safety threats, like Cortez-Magdaleno, versus releasing them to the streets where they could potentially prey on additional children, said ICE’s acting Seattle Field Office Director Michael Melendez.”

On March 1, 2021, the Oregon DOC transferred Cortez-Magdaleno to ICE custody and on March 31, an immigration judge ordered Cortez-Magdaleno removed to Mexico.

On April 6, Cortez-Magdaleno was removed from the United States via an ICE Air Operations charter flight and transferred to the custody of Mexican authorities.

ICE is now implementing the interim civil immigration enforcement priorities directed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to focus its limited resources on threats to national security, border security and public safety. ICE continues to carry out its duty to enforce the laws of the United States in accordance with the Department’s national security and public safety mission.

The COVID-19 Response Is Killing More Than It Saves

In medicine, we are constantly balancing risk and reward. Nearly all medicines and many therapeutic treatments involve risk to the patient we hope to help. It's time we use this same intellectual exercise to create a reasonable inquiry into the risks we took when responding to COVID-19 and balance it against the reward. If nothing else is accomplished, a better plan for future societal responses can be formulated. And if we recognize and remedy our failures in time, maybe we'll still have a recognizable United States of America.

We have the benefit of hindsight, so we can look at the results objectively. The reward? Although we've lost well over 500,000 American lives to COVID-19, it could have been far worse. Even though the number is in question (as there were economically rewarding incentives to list COVID-19 as a cause of death when it could have had little to do with a person's demise), it is still a frightening and increasing number.

But our methods to mitigate COVID-19 come at a terrible societal cost. People will die from the fallout from the governmental response. Meanwhile, politicians and the media are transparently manipulating "the science," justifying bad and ineffective policies to erode the whole idea of the United States of America, ignoring the toll their decisions have wrought. They ignore real science, studies replicated over years, that easily prove that the COVID-19 response they chose to follow will kill far more people than it saves.

On top of that, the consequences of the world's response have resulted in what will be millions of deaths worldwide, far outweighing mortality from the virus itself. Even knowing this, even when we are aware that the cure is worse than the disease, we remain compliant in the middle of a fear-stoked roar from complicit mainstream media and politicians, doubling down on bad policy and poorly substantiated recommendations.

Studies are accumulating estimations of potential deaths from the consequences of the lockdowns, school closings, and business closures. A recent Bureau of Economic Research study suggests that just the "unemployment shock" in America will lead to a 3% increase in mortality projected out over the next 15 years. This translates to roughly 890,000 additional deaths.

Ex-US Soldier Who Staged Kidnapping of 12-Year-Old 'Girlfriend' Sentenced to Over 12 Years in Prison

Former US Army paratrooper James Murdock Peele previously admitted in a videotaped confession that he staged the kidnapping of a 12-year-old child he referred to as his "girlfriend." He also admitted to having sexual intercourse with the pre-teen, but claimed he was unaware that she was a minor.

The US Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina announced Tuesday that Peele, 21, was sentenced to 151 months (>12.5 years) in prison for the "transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity."

The court's sentencing comes as part of a plea deal with US attorneys.

Citing court documents and statements, the release detailed that authorities were first alerted on the morning of October 21, 2018, after a woman in New Bern, North Carolina, discovered her 12-year-old granddaughter was missing. A handwritten ransom note demanding $20,000 for her return was also retrieved from the scene.

After checking the pre-teen's Facebook page, authorities were able to identify Peele as a suspect and member of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.

"They traced him to a barracks room, where the same afternoon they found Peele together with the minor victim," the issuance read. "A forensic examination confirmed that Peele had recently had sexual intercourse with the minor."

Peele's roommate - another Ft. Bragg soldier - told investigators that he chose to leave the room after the roommate told him to turn up his music, "which the roommate understood to mean that Peele planned to have sex with the girl behind a sheet that had been hung across the room for privacy."

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents arrived soon after and arrested Peele. Investigators later learned that Peele introduced the minor to his parents during a brief trip to South Carolina.

According to authorities with the Craven County Sheriff's Office and the FBI, a fellow soldier at Ft. Bragg gave Peele a ride to the minor's home about a week before the staged kidnapping.

The friend began to question the girl's age after noticing the "childlike décor, including middle school photographs and a hamster." He allegedly exited the room after Peele and the minor began kissing.

After first claiming that he was unaware of the child's age, Peele eventually admitted to FBI agents that he had seen the girl at a sleepover with other girls who looked young, "including one girl whose age he had seen to be 12 years old."

Both Peele and the minor admitted to having a sexual relationship. During a forensic interview, the pre-teen told investigators that Peele was well aware of her age.

"He also admitted to writing the ransom note, although he stated that the victim had asked to leave with him and had come up with the idea of staging a kidnapping," the Tuesday issuance detailed.

Peele was notably directed for separation from the 82nd Airborne Division in April 2019, around six months after his arrest.

• Roseanne Boyland, 34, died by accident from acute amphetamine intoxication. Boyland, of Georgia, wanted to be a sobriety counselor and followed QAnon conspiracies, her family said.

Results typically come within 90 days of a death, but Sicknick’s death remains under investigation.

“The cause and manner of death for Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick are pending,” the office said.

The cause of Sicknick’s death has been the subject of intense interest among lawmakers and authorities. Two men have been charged with spraying Sicknick with a chemical, but not for causing his death.

In a letter emailed Tuesday to the Senate’s hired auditors, attorneys for the non-profit voting-rights group Protect Democracy and three Phoenix firms warn that the auditors’ plan to knock on doors to search for voters likely violates state and federal law.

Men Charged for Locking 16 Undocumented Immigrants in Nogales House

Human smugglers locked over a dozen undocumented immigrants, including a child, in a room of a house in Nogales, Arizona, without access to a bathroom or running water last week, federal prosecutors allege in a new criminal complaint.

U.S. Border Patrol agents and officers with the Nogales Police Department found the 16 immigrants, one of whom was an "unaccompanied juvenile," locked in a room of a Nogales home. The door to the room had been locked with a large padlock. Large piles of trash were found in the room and the "stench of human waste and putrid food" was "significant." The migrants told law enforcement that the smugglers had seized their cellphones and IDs.

It's unclear how long the migrants were locked in the room or what happened to them after law enforcement found them. (Presumably, at least some of them were placed into deportation proceedings.) The Nogales Police Department did not respond to New Times' requests for comment regarding the case and their collaboration with Border Patrol. A spokesperson for Border Patrol also did not respond to questions.

Four men were charged on April 2 in the incident. Two of them, Hector Hugo Aviles-Armenta and Ramiro Alberto Medina-Castillo, are cousins and Mexican nationals who were in Nogales illegally to shuttle migrants to the stash house. The other two defendants, Enrique Ramos and Adrian Collalmo-Bernal, are U.S. citizens and were found at the stash house. Several of the them were allegedly paid for their role in transporting migrants to the home and keeping them there.

Law enforcement officials discovered the migrants through surveillance and a joint search of the house. On April 1, U.S. Border Patrol agents were monitoring the parking lot at the Sacred Heart Catholic School in Nogales, which is frequently used by human smugglers for "load ups and vehicle swaps," according to the complaint. They tailed a car that left the lot that they suspected of carrying migrants to a two-story home with boarded-up windows. The agents observed the same car, which was driven by Ramiro Alberto Medina-Castillo, leave the house without any passengers. They suspected that he had dropped off migrants at the house.

Biden at the time was a top potential Democratic presidential contender.

The letter is signed by 140 people, including nearly two dozen ambassadors, six former senators, four former secretaries of Homeland Security and two members of the 9/11 Commission, according to WTOP News.

This is the most recent request into forming a commission to study the Capitol riot. In January, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi argued for a such commission. She received pushback from Republicans, which effectively killed the idea.

The letter also urges Congress to form a commission similar to the one that investigated the 9/11 terror attacks and delivered a through report.

"A failure to deploy the full suite of tools available to fully understand January 6th and address its causes will leave the Capitol, and the nation, vulnerable to future attacks," the letter states.

Vindman retired from the Army after his testimony, citing "bullying" after testifying, according to USA Today.

The scientists said the World Health Organization’s report on the origins of the pandemic, which concluded the lab leak hypothesis was extremely unlikely, “failed to reach some most basic standards of credible analysis and assessment,” noting that the report contained 12 incorrect, disputed, contradictory and imprecise statements used to downplay the theory.

“Well over a year after the initial outbreak, critical records and biological samples that could provide essential insights into pandemic origins remain inaccessible,” the letter stated. “This withholding of key resources that could and should have been made available undermined the credibility of the joint study team work.”

The scientists said that a new investigation should be convened that strips China and any other government of veto power over the scientists selected to probe the pandemic’s origins. The Chinese government had such veto powers over the WHO’s recently-concluded origins investigation.

North Carolina Man Sentenced To 40 Years Imprisonment For Exploitation Of Nine-Month-Old And Transportation Of Child Pornography

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.– On April 7, 2021, Anthony Brett Banks, 30, formerly of Kannapolis, North Carolina, was sentenced by the Honorable Curtis L. Collier, in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

As part of the plea agreement filed with the court, Banks agreed to plead guilty to a superseding indictment charging him with one count of transportation of child pornography, in violation of 18 U.S.C. 18 U.S.C. §§ 2252A(a)(1) and (b)(l); and one count of causing another person to transport and ship child pornography in interstate commerce, in violation of 18 U.S.C. §§ 2252A(a)(1) and (b)(1) and Title U.S.C. §§ 2(b).

Banks was sentenced to 480 months in prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release. Banks will be required to register with state sex offender registries and comply with special sex offender conditions during his supervised release.

The defendant sexually abused his 9-month-old biological daughter, created digital videos of the abuse, and traded several of the images with someone he met in an online room dedicated to sexually abusing animals. The person with whom the defendant swapped images was located here in the Eastern District of Tennessee.

“The US Attorney’s Office, along with its law enforcement partners, is committed to apprehending child sex predators wherever they operate. Today’s sentence sends a strong message to sexual predators and demonstrates our commitment to protecting the community’s most vulnerable victims,” said Acting United States Attorney Francis M. Hamilton III.

“Each year, millions of children fall prey to sexual predators,” said Homeland Security Investigation (“HSI”) Nashville Special Agent in Charge Jerry C. Templet, Jr. “HSI agents make it a top priority to protect vulnerable children from victimization by working with their law enforcement partners to investigate predators involved with the production, distribution and possession of child sexual abuse material and ensure they are held accountable for their heinous actions. EXCLUSIVE: ICE gave $87M no-bid contract to business with Biden ties, raising conflict of interest questions

Last month, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (an agency of the Department of Homeland Security) signed an $87 million contract to acquire and oversee an operation involving 1,200 hotel beds to house migrant families in Arizona and Texas. The contract was given to the nonprofit organization Family Endeavors, based out of San Antonio, Texas, which has no previous history as an ICE contractor.

But Family Endeavors does have a former senior official on the Biden transition team in its leadership: former ICE official Andrew Lorenzen-Strait, identified as a potential broker in the deal by Rep. Andrew Clyde of Georgia, who is tracking the contract, as well as two others with knowledge of the situation.

On Jan. 20, Inauguration Day, Family Endeavors announced that Lorenzen-Strait would become its senior director for migrant services and federal affairs, meaning that he would be the organization’s liaison to the federal government. Within two months, Lorenzen-Strait secured the contract.

Government contracts are supposed to be awarded through an open competitive process, outlined in the Federal Acquisition Regulation. Information obtained through the Federal Procurement Data System indicates that ICE never opened the contract to outside companies and organizations but went with an internal candidate who had significant insider connections.

“The bid was not advertised for competition, as is the norm,” said one person who is familiar with how ICE brokered the deal with Family Endeavors.

“Unless certain exceptions apply, an agency must compete the contract,” said Carol Thompson, a partner with the Washington-based Federal Practice Group law firm.

The only exception, Thompson said, was in the case of an emergency, such as disaster relief. In that case, ICE would have to provide a “Justification and Approval” document explaining why it did not compete the contract; a failure to do so would likely result in disciplinary action against the ICE officials who signed the deal, and the contract would be canceled.

ICE published its reason for not competing the contract after being contacted by the Washington Examiner Wednesday morning. It cited "unusual and compelling urgency" as the reason for not complying with federal contract law.

“Though the situation at the border might warrant the use of the [exception], I find it hard to believe that there were no other vendors that could have been at least considered for the award," Clyde, a Republican, wrote in a letter to ICE leadership late last week that was obtained by the Washington Examiner.

ICE said in a statement that the hotels are intended to be "short term, and generally less than 72 hours." It did not comment on questions related to Lorenzen-Strait.

“I am gravely concerned given that ICE did not compete this contract award, that this is Endeavors' first contract with ICE, and that the contract award amount far exceeds any previous award amounts with this organization,” Clyde wrote.

CNN) —

Caritas Internationalis, a network of Catholic charitable organizations, urged its regional branches on Thursday to vet their staff and volunteers. It comes after CNN published an investigation intoFather Luk Delft, a convicted abuser,who was moved to the Central African Republic by his religious order to work in a key role at the charity.

“We express our compassion and solidarity with the children and their families. We thank those who have come forward. They have our full support in telling their truth,” Aloysius John, the secretary general of Caritas Internationalis, said in a statement published on its website.

Delft, who had been convicted in Europe before going to work for the charity, has been accused of abusing at least two boys in the CAR.

The 50-year-old priest was only removed from the post after CNN revealed the new accusations against him to his superiors in the Salesians of Don Bosco, a religious order established specifically to protect children.

“Caritas Internationalis understands that those responsible have ensured that the accused is no longer in the Central African Republic, and both civil and religious authorities have been notified and are investigating the allegations,” the charity said.

It said it was assisting the local Caritas organization in CAR as it investigates the allegations.

'Physically closed': Alberta health officials shut down GraceLife Church west of Edmonton

Alberta Health Services has closed GraceLife Church in Parkland County west of Edmonton.

In an emailed statement to CBC News Wednesday morning, RCMP confirmed they were on scene, assisting AHS as they closed the church under Section 62.1 of the Alberta Public Health Act.

TOKYO — The Vatican’sCaritas Internationalis charity says it learned in 2017 of pedophilia concernsinvolving its Central African Republic director, but left it for his superiors to investigate and he remained in place and in ministry until this year.

CNN revealed the scandal over the Rev. Luk Delft this week, reporting that the Belgian Salesian priest was appointed to lead the Vatican’s main charity in the poverty-stricken country despite a 2012 criminal conviction in Belgium for child sexual abuse and possession of child pornography.

CNN identified two new alleged victims in Central African Republic since he was posted there.

Michel Roy, former secretary-general of Caritas Internationalis from 2011-2019, said in a statement Saturday that he didn’t know about the criminal conviction until this year.

But he said he had been informed in 2017 by a therapist that Delft shouldn’t be in contact with children.

“I informed Caritas CAR about the therapist’s letter and asked them to ensure that the issue was followed up with his order,” Roy said in a statement. “I was told that the issue had been resolved.”

Bangui Archbishop Cardinal Dieudonne Nzapalainga was in charge of Caritas Central African Republic at the time, and Delft was its country director. Roy relayed the concerns in the therapist’s letter to Nzapalainga, who relayed them to the Salesians.

The letter contained information from a therapist who reported that a patient had “concerns” but not evidence of pedophilia involving Delft, and said he shouldn’t be allowed to be around children given his past, said Andrew Azzopardi, the head of safeguarding and integrity for Caritas Internationalis.

Azzopardi said the Salesians in 2017 informed Nzapalainga about the 2012 conviction, but he was left in his position, and in ministry, until the new Caritas Internationalis secretary-general was appointed this year. A new complaints committee reviewed the case, and Caritas Internationalis told Nzapalainga he should be removed, and he was soon thereafter.

“A person with this background should have never entered the Caritas family let alone be a director,” Azzopardi said. “Not enough was done in 2017.”

CNN identified two alleged victims of Delft in Central African Republic, which would mean he had continued to abuse after he was sent to the country by the Salesians. He was appointed country director in 2015 by Nzapalainga. It wasn’t clear what, if any, information the Salesians provided him about Delft’s background at the time.

Roy said he had told Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, president of Caritas Internationalis and the archbishop of Manila, what he planned to do with the therapist’s letter in 2017. But Roy said he didn’t update Tagle, “who considered then that the issue was resolved.”

Caritas Internationalis is a confederation and doesn’t have the authority to appoint or fire staff at its autonomous national organizations, which are headed by national bishops’ conferences.

In 2017, its policies were to inform those responsible for Delft’s employment — in this case the Bangui archbishop and head of the Central African Republic bishops conference — and ensure the allegations were investigated.

New safeguarding policies were approved in 2018 at Caritas Internationalis, including the creation of a complaints committee and the appointment of Azzopardi as a safeguarding officer this year.

Azzopardi said a canonical investigation has been launched against Delft, as well as a criminal investigation.
