Texas Governor Abbott bans officials from requiring face masks, introduces $1,000 fine for those who do

 

Governmental entities in the US state of Texas will be banned from mandating mask-wearing from June 4 in places such as schools, after Governor Greg Abbott issued an executive order on face coverings rules on Tuesday.

 

The move means officials at county level, in cities, school districts, public health authorities and government will not be able to require people to cover their face, Abbott's office announced in a statement.

 

From May 21, local governments or officials who try to enforce mask-wearing in Texas could be slapped with fines of up to $1,000.

 

Schools may follow existing guidelines until June 4, and state-run hospitals and detention facilities will be exempt from Abbott's executive order.

 

"Texans, not government, should decide their best health practices, which is why masks will not be mandated by public school districts or government entities," Abbott said in a statement.

 

The governor also pledged to use vaccines and antibody therapeutic drugs to continue the fight against Covid-19, while "defending Texans' liberty" by giving them a choice over mask-wearing.

 

Abbott is known for his tough views on face masks and in March issued an executive order to lift the mask mandate, to instead rely on other measures such as vaccines.

 

More than 39% of the population of Texas has been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, according to state data.

 

President Joe Biden has said vaccinated Americans may shed their masks, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still recommends face coverings for those not yet immunized.

Yeah, I've been ready to ditch my "smart" phone for years. It's so old my provider will brick it for me soon.

 

As for buying from a farmer, that's a good option. I was fortunate to find a book about local edible plants some time ago. The book describes what to do with them and gives cautions as well.

 

Permaculture growing makes more sense to me than a convention garden anymore. Walk into back yard- find food to eat!

 

Ever heard of a kitchen garden? If you have a bunch of herbs outside your kitchen they are available all the time.

 

Btw, you might want to do some homework on dandelions. Multiple parts of the plant are edible and I think the root is good for the liver. There is even one type of dandelion that might be a good source of latex (not to eat, of course). I think dandelion was called a weed so we'd forget its edible. Elderly relative says her mother would cook them in fat. Don't let the lawn guy kill your dandelions!

Hirono (D-HI) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) introduced a resolution calling for the United States Senate to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). UNCLOS, which has been ratified by 166 nations and the European Union, details the rights and responsibilities of countries regarding the world’s oceans, including guidelines for businesses and the management of marine natural resources. U.S. Representatives Joe Courtney (D-CT) and Don Young (R-AK) introduced a similar resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives last month.

 

The United States signed UNCLOS on July 29, 1994, but the U.S. Senate has not yet voted to ratify the treaty, despite urging from environmental, scientific, labor, and industry organizations. Senators Hirono and Murkowski, along with Representatives Courtney and Young, also called for the Senate to ratify UNCLOS in 2019.

Three More Guantanamo Prisoners Approved For Release, Report Says

 

Two US presidential administrations have pledged to dissolve the Guantanamo Bay military prison, established after the tragic events of 11 September, 2001, to house what were referred to at the time as the most dangerous criminals in the world. The notorious detention facility, to date, holds just 40 inmates.

 

The Biden administration has approved the release of three inmates from the Guantanamo Bay prison, the New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed government officials.

 

It’s unknown yet where the three inmates will be transferred, as the State Department must still negotiate security measures with those countries that will take them. It’s also unclear what restrictions would be placed on the prisoners after they leave Cuba – to remain detained or be set free under conditions.

 

The detainees are reported to be 73-year-old Saifullah Paracha from Pakistan, who was captured in Thailand in 2003 for purported links with the 9/11 organizers, 54-year-old Abdul Rabbani, also a citizen of Pakistan, and a 40-year-old Yemeni, Uthman Abdul al-Rahim Uthman, one of Osama bin Laden’s suspected bodyguards.

 

During two decades detention, no official charges have been brought against them. The decision to release the three was reportedly made last week by top US security officials, including the attorney general, the director of national intelligence, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the secretaries of defense, homeland security and state.

 

According to the paper, the board that supervises threat assessment earlier recommended six other detainees be transferred to other countries “if security conditions met”, making the total number of those held in Gitmo at 9 out of the 40 people who are currently imprisoned there.

 

Last month, Guantanamo Camp 7, once one of the most secret sections of the prison, with “especially valuable prisoners,” was closed. All prisoners held there have been transferred to another unit. Camp 7, set up in 2006 and said to house highly dangerous prisoners, has repeatedly come under criticism for reported brutality and violence toward prisoners.

 

The current US administration has announced that it intends to close the prison before the end of this presidential term. The action would require congressional permission to transfer any detainees for further investigation as well as coordination with other countries who would agree to accept the prisoners.

 

The detention facility for international terrorists at the US Guantanamo military base in Cuba was established by former US President George Bush in 2002 after the 11 September, 2001, attack to imprison those accused of terrorism. At various times, around 800 people were held in Guantanamo.

 

Among the total of 40 prisoners now incarcerated, only a handful have reportedly been officially charged.

"How can we match up duplicate ballots with the original if there is no identifiable original?” Ken Bennett says.

 

In the Senate hearing today, Arizona audit liaison, Ken Bennet, revealed a new glitch in the duplicate ballot portion of the hand recount. Duplicate ballots are copies of ballots that were unable to be read by vote tabulation machines. “We have batch after batch of duplicate ballots with IDs but there is no corresponding original ballot with an ID,” explained Bennett.

 

Former Secretary of State Ken Bennett's team uncovered the error just a few days ago, he told Senate President Karen Fann and Judicial Committee Chair Warren Petersen. Each damaged ballot and its associated duplicate ballot are supposed to have the same serial number to verify the accuracy of the duplicate ballot and ensure the votes are only counted once.

 

But he has found many batches of damaged ballots without the serial numbers that are on the duplicates, violating state law 16-621. "We are struggling as to how we're going to be able to match up" those damaged and duplicated ballots, Bennett said.

If it’s true that Macy’s is dropping Chrissy Teigen’s cookware line over 10-year-old tweets for which she’s apologized, that meets the definition of “cancel culture.” Does that mean she deserves to be saved? No. Teigen is being asked to live by the standards she helped set.

 

Let us not forget, Teigen’s cultural leftist social “justice” ideology is crucial to her brand, earning her uncritical and fawning media coverage that made the Chrissy Teigen brand higher profile and more attractive to companies like Macy’s. She made money off being woke and attacking our social fabric.

 

According to the Daily Mail, “Chrissy Teigen’s Cravings kitchen line of cookware has been dumped from retail giant Macy’s website after she admitted she bullied Courtney Stodden when she was just a teen. Teigen, 35, has come under fire over the past several days, after tweets in which she told a then 16-year-old Stodden, now 26, to take their own life, resurfaced.”

In 2011, Teigen published a barrage of tweets telling then-16-year-old Stodden to ‘go to sleep forever.’

 

Stodden said this was only part of the picture, saying Teigen would also ‘privately DM me and tell me to kill myself.’

 

Teigen responded last Wednesday posting a lengthy apology on Twitter saying she was ‘mortified’ by her past behavior and had tried to reach out to Stodden to apologize.

 

Stodden claims Teigen did not privately apologize for her bizarrely aggressive bullying of a teenager. None of this is the least bit surprising. Teigen’s obnoxious conduct has been on full display on Twitter for a decade.

 

The principle of yanking deals over bad 10-year-old tweets is wrong. When corporations and celebrities make these decisions, they enhance cultural norms that affect people with less power and money than John Legend’s wife. Those norms include the standard that apologies and grace are insufficient. They also include the standard that brief news cycles induced by social media mobs are bad for business. Both are wrong and dangerous.

 

Macy’s move, in this case, will empower those destructive cultural norms. I think the principle is deeply wrong, but Teigen should be happy to live by her own bad standards, which, again, helped make her a lot of money and power. Supporting — perhaps even enjoying — the attempted cancelation of Teigen is not the same as supporting cancel culture more broadly since the sad reality is that elites will only revoke their own support for these bad standards when they affect elites.

 

What’s both much more outrageous and interesting is actually Macy’s decision to work with Teigen in the first place. She’s a sanctimonious political extremist, hypocrite, and a frequent jerk who appeals to the small slice of cultural leftist America that populates coastal newsrooms.

 

Even from a business perspective, she’s polarizing. But the media’s extreme cultural leftism warps our country’s self-image to the point where businesses and the broader public don’t recognize each other. Further, the niche-ification of our economy and culture means that the slice of the public that inexplicably finds Teigen appealing can exert outsize power over corporations and media outlets.

 

Shed no tears for Chrissy Teigen. She did this to herself. Worse yet, she did this to our culture.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced Tuesday that public schools can no longer require masks on their campuses starting June 5. Since the military was brought in last year to help with the planning and logistics of vaccine distribution and to keep the supply chain safe from cyber attacks, Brodie has been a key member of the team led by Fortin.

She returned briefly to the Department of National Defence but will now move back to oversee the vaccine distribution drive.

Iain Stewart, president of the public health agency, said putting Brodie in charge "allows for a seamless transition."

Fortin had been the public face of the vaccine distribution drive — a calm, reassuring presence throughout many televised events. His 27-member team included experts in global logistics, health care and planning.

Sources told CBC News on Friday that the sexual misconduct allegation against Fortin predated 2015 and the start of Operation Honour, the military's now-defunct campaign to stamp out inappropriate behaviour in the ranks.

The confidential sources, who could not speak publicly because of the sensitivity of the file, would not specify the nature of the allegation. On Sunday, however, CTV News reported that the allegation involved a claim of indecent exposure more than 30 years old, dating from when Fortin attended the Royal Military College in St-Jean, Quebec.

His lawyer, Cmdr. Marc Létourneau, said his client will fight the claim.

"It is a news reporter who informed Major-General Fortin of the allegation against him Sunday, May 16," Letourneau said in a written statement. "This took him completely by surprise. He vigorously and categorically denies this allegation."

Fortin joins a list of half-a-dozen military leaders who have come under fire for alleged sexual misconduct.

His departure came about suddenly. As late as Friday morning, Fortin was listed as being seconded to PHAC in a Department of National Defence statement involving the assignments of general officers.

CBC News reached out to Fortin for comment, but he declined and has referred questions to the Department of National Defence.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tasked Fortin with leading Canada's COVID-19 vaccine distribution effort in the fall.

The prime minister ducked questions today about how the general's sudden departure would affect vaccine distribution. On Friday, Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan took a stab at reassurance, saying the military would remain focused on the task of getting millions more life-saving vaccine doses into the country.

There were signs Monday that opposition parties were gearing up to reopen parliamentary hearings on the sexual misconduct crisis in the military. A meeting of the House of Commons defence committee has been called for Tuesday to discuss a proposal to hear more witnesses.

Public hearings looking into who in the Liberal government knew about a sexual misconduct allegation against the former chief of the defence staff, retired general Jonathan Vance, had largely concluded. The committee was on course to begin writing its report but the latest allegations involving Fortin could raise more questions.

The Arizona Senate's audit of Maricopa County's general election has hit a new snag: verifying whether some ballots may have been counted twice.

 

The liaison between Senate Republicans who authorized the audit and county officials told a hearing Tuesday that serial numbers were missing on damaged ballots that were duplicated so they could be read by vote tabulation machines.

 

Former Secretary of State Ken Bennett's team uncovered the error just a few days ago, he told Senate President Karen Fann and Judicial Committee Chair Warren Petersen. Each damaged ballot and its associated duplicate ballot are supposed to have the same serial number to ensure they are only counted once.

 

But he has found many batches of damaged ballots without the serial numbers that are on the duplicates, violating state law. "We are struggling as to how we're going to be able to match up" those damaged and duplicated ballots, Bennett said.

 

Asked by Fann if Maricopa County could assist in that effort, Bennett said county officials have made clear to him several times they wouldn't work with any of the auditors the Senate Republicans hired. He will ask for their help directly, Bennett said.

 

County supervisors portrayed the contractors, led by Cyber Ninjas, as incompetent and unqualified to run an election audit in their own hearing and press conference Monday.
