DES MOINES, Iowa β€” Former Vice President Mike Pence told Breitbart News exclusively that Democrat President Joe Biden’s β€œbad policy,” including his $1.9 trillion coronavirus aid package and massive new spending proposals under consideration in Congress, could derail economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

 

Pence’s comments came in a wide-ranging interview Friday evening about the Biden agenda and the upcoming midterm elections at the Family Leadership Summit after he gave remarks to a crowd of about a thousand Christian conservatives in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. While Pence has made a number of speeches since leaving office on January 20 this year, this interview with Breitbart News is his first since he left office.

 

β€œThe extension of, the plus-up on unemployment benefits by the Biden administration has worked a real hardship on small businesses and our recovery,” Pence said. β€œLook, this economy started to recover in the summer of 2020 demonstrating the resilience of the American people and the rightness of our agenda. With tax cuts, and rolling back regulations, and unleashing American energy, and America First trade deals, we had laid a foundation within the first three years that created 7 million jobs. I believe it also was the foundation on which America has made this historic recovery and in so many ways what the Biden administration has done and continues to do β€” and adding to that they’re pushing for the largest tax increase in 50 years to pass the largest spending bill in American history β€” I think what the Biden administration is doing threatens to short-circuit the American recovery we all long to see and that is underway. It is. But I think the fact that inflation is now rising at the most rapid pace in 13 years is evidence of the fact that markets are starting to respond to the big government solutions β€” higher taxes, more regulation β€” being planned and coming out of this administration. That’s why we got to fight back and fight back hard.”

 

Pence said he is β€œincredibly proud” of House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy for holding House Republicans together β€œin opposing the radical left agenda of [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi.” He pointed specifically to that $1.9 trillion coronavirus spending plan, passed in March along purely partisan lines in both the U.S. House and Senate, that extended the newly-created federal unemployment benefits program that, at the beginning of the pandemic, supplemented similar state benefits. Combined, the federal and state benefits collected together could often pay people more to not work than to actually work β€” something that has led to small businesses like restaurants and stores across America having trouble hiring employees. The federal government never before offered supplemental unemployment insurance benefits. But, at the beginning of the pandemic, the Trump administration β€” with support on a bipartisan basis in Congress β€” passed such benefits. When Democrats in the Texas Legislature walked out of the capitol in May to stop a suite of anti-democratic voting laws, they cast a spotlight on a crisis that extends far beyond the Lone Star State. Since the 2020 election with its historic turnout, lawmakers across the country have introduced nearly 400 bills making it harder to vote: purging voters from the rolls, making it more difficult to register, cutting back on early and absentee voting, getting rid of ballot drop boxes, even banning giving out food or water to people waiting in line at the polls.

Each of these proposals disproportionately prevents people of color from casting their ballots, and each is egregious in its own right. (They also pose a question: If your best strategy for winning elections is to block huge swaths of the electorate from voting, what does that say about the strength of your candidates and policies?) Combined, they add up to an even bigger problem – one that encompasses redistricting, Trump’s β€œBig Lie” and the anti-majoritarianism we’re seeing from today’s Republican Party. We are witnessing a concerted attempt to destabilize the democratic process and delegitimize our multi-racial democracy, carried out in full view of the American people. As Democrats, it’s not enough to push back one law, one court case or even one election at a time. We need to fundamentally change the way we think about and fight back against this blatant, sweeping effort.

The fight to ensure that every citizen can vote and have their vote counted has long been the defining struggle of our country. This historical thread runs from the Civil War to the Thirteenth and 19th Amendments to the Civil Rights Movement. The Voting Rights Act, and the laws interpreting it, have been at the core of much of the progress we’ve made since its passage – a view that, until recently, was shared by Democrats and Republicans. I was in the U.S. Senate when we voted 98-0 to extend this landmark piece of legislation. We sifted through thousands of pages of evidence and heard hundreds of hours of testimony that showed just how desperately the Voting Rights Act was still needed. After our unanimous vote, the law was signed by a Republican president, George W. Bush.

It’s heartbreaking and unacceptable that we once again find ourselves fighting the battles of the last two centuries. Today’s voting restrictions are no different from the Jim Crow past, replacing literacy tests and poll taxes with laws that, as one North Carolina judge put it in 2016, β€œtarget African Americans with almost surgical precision.” Much of the blame for this backsliding rests with the Supreme Court, which, thanks to the election of President Trump, is even more hostile to voting rights today than it was when it gutted a crucial provision of the Voting Rights Act in 2013. But the problem is more insidious.

Thirty years ago, Republican operative Thomas Hofeller said, β€œI define redistricting as the only legalized form of vote-stealing left in the United States today.” He became the primary architect of Republicans’ gerrymandering strategy, collecting data on race and voting behavior, then drawing statehouse maps tailor-made to dilute the influence of Black voters. Groups like the Federalist Society have worked for years to pack the courts with judges more committed to appeasing powerful special interests than to championing the fundamental rights of the American people. The emboldening of white supremacists and conspiracy theorists during Trump’s campaign and time in the White House along with the international movement against liberal democracy have exacerbated this perfect storm.

All of this has made it harder to vote, particularly for specific groups: people of color, students, the elderly and low-income Americans. This kind of disparity does not happen by accident. It reminds me of one of my favorite sayings from Arkansas: β€œYou find a turtle on a fence post, it did not get there on its own.” It’s no coincidence that the restrictive voting laws passed by Republicans target people who are more likely to vote for Democrats.

Voting rights should not be controversial – and for the majority of Americans, they aren’t. Yet we have members of Congress who are wildly out of the mainstream, who vote to overturn the results of an election, and who use their powerful platforms to spread lies and disinformation. As a result, nearly two-thirds of Republicans now incorrectly believe President Biden was not legitimately elected. They point to debunked claims of voter fraud, discounting the votes of millions of Americans, including 87% of Black voters.

What happened on January 6th showed that these fanatical ideas can lead to real, even deadly harm. After the insurrection, I wrote about the failure of imagination that hindered our ability to prevent the violence in Washington. I quoted historian Taylor Branch, who asked in Isabel Wilkerson’s β€œCaste:” β€œIf people were given the choice between democracy and whiteness, how many would choose whiteness?” The months that followed revealed the ugly truth of just how many elected officials in America would choose whiteness.

In this pivotal moment for our democracy, people in every corner of our country are rightfully asking: β€œWhat can we do?” The answer isn’t an easy one, because there is no one step that will solve this deep-seated problem. Passing laws like H.R. 1 (the For the People Act) and H.R. 4 (the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act) that make it easier to vote is an excellent start, but we can’t stop there. We need to call these attacks on voting what they are: part of a clear attempt to move away from a pluralistic, multi-racial democracy and toward white supremacist authoritarianism. We need to remain laser-focused on what’s at stake for democracy and people’s lives and refuse to allow Republicans to draw us into piecemeal fights over tactics and technicalities. Voters should have the ability – not just in principle, but in practice – to hold elected officials accountable in the voting booth. We should be doing everything we can to make it easier for eligible voters to cast their ballots.

When the people make their voices heard in an election, we should respect the results. These aren’t partisan statements; they’re attributes of a functioning democracy. Now is the time for anyone who cares about ours to stand up and fight for it using absolutely every tool in our toolbox: legislation, marching and protesting, speaking up, supporting people and groups advocating for a democracy that reflects the diversity of this country, and, yes, showing up to the polls at every election, not just the presidential ones. Democracies the world over have faced this challenge; how we respond will have a ripple effect around the globe.

National Border Patrol Council Calls Out Biden’s Border Policies as Inhumane. 18 Jul 2021

 

National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd told reporters on Saturday that President Joe Biden’s border policies lead to the inhumane treatment of migrants. Texas Governor Greg Abbott invited Judd to speak on Saturday at a border security briefing held in Del Rio, Texas, alongside Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

 

Judd spoke on behalf of the Border Patrol rank and file agents represented by the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC). Judd highlighted the inhumane conditions caused by the federal government’s policies that reversed a successful trend on border security during the Trump administration. His remarks came during a joint border security briefing with Governors Abbott and DeSantis. No federal border security agencies were represented at the briefing.

 

β€œThe truth of the matter is, is it is not humane to not properly enforce the laws,” Judd, a Border Patrol agent, told the two governors and the media. β€œIt is inhumane, what we are currently seeing on the border, it is inhumane that liberal policies are inviting individuals to put themselves in the hands of these dangerous cartels, it is inhumane that liberal policies are allowing the smuggling. And, when we try to properly interdict these individuals β€” they just throw children into the river to distract us.”

β€œIt is inhumane to have people cross the border illegally in these harsh conditions,” Judd stated.

 

Judd also excoriated the current administration for limiting the ability of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to work with state and local law enforcement authorities. Judd told those in attendance, β€œThis administration has effectively made every single city in the United States a sanctuary city. When ICE, under the guise of prosecutorial discretion, cannot respond to Jacksonville PD, Houston PD, because this administration will not allow ICE to respond unless the individuals that are in custody have an extensive criminal record, violent criminal record, this is another magnet that is inviting people to come across the border.”

 

Judd closed by saying β€œIf you ask me, Do I want more agents or do I want policy, I will tell you, every single time, policy is what will stop illegal immigration. When you get rid of sanctuary cities, when you reinstitute policies, such as β€˜Remain in Mexico,’ when you get rid of that magnet that is catch and release β€” illegal immigration drops to all-time lows.”

DeSantis: 70 Percent of Migrants Apprehended in Del Rio, Texas, Headed to Florida

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed surprise at reports from the border in Del Rio, Texas, saying that 70 percent of apprehended migrants are headed to his state. The Florida governor’s comments came following a border briefing with Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Saturday.

 

Governor DeSantis told reporters that 70 percent of the migrants apprehended in the Del Rio Border Patrol Sector are bound for Florida. He also said that 95 percent of the methamphetamine coming into his state comes from the Texas border.

 

β€œI think those numbers are eye-popping,” the Florida governor said. β€œThe number of these people coming across illegally, who are telling folks that their destination is Florida, obviously I knew we were going to get some, but I didn’t think it’d be a majority.”

 

DeSantis said some of this information came from the law enforcement personnel his state sent to Texas to help with the border crisis that has exploded since President Joe Biden took office in January.

 

β€œOur Florida personnel have assisted with the apprehension of more than 2800, illegal aliens and they’ve assisted with more than 100 arrests for felonies, of those aliens including human trafficking, drug smuggling, and stolen vehicles and so they have had a big impact,” the Florida governor reported. β€œI certainly wouldn’t have been able to ring up those numbers a year ago there’s just no way.”

 

Governor Abbott responded to the Florida governor, saying, β€œWe thank Governor DeSantis and as well as the other officials from Florida, who are here with us today. We appreciate your support, whether it be in personnel resources, whether it be aircraft, whether it be boats, but we need all the manpower, we can get to repel the incredible number, the record-breaking number of people who are coming across the border.”

 

β€œI do want to add that in addition to Florida, Texas is so proud to have support from other states including Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Arkansas, and Ohio,” Abbott stated. β€œThis is a national-based issue and Governor DeSantis made the points of why this is such a national issue. And that what happens at the border may be happening here today, but it will be happening in these other states, tomorrow, or next week, or next month.”

Conservative activist Philip Anderson detailed the death of January 6 protestor Rosanne Boyland, which he has blamed on Capitol police. During an interview on Sunday, Anderson said the actions of Capitol police on January 6 caused a stampede outside the Capitol that crushed Boyland.

He said officers used tear gas and pushed protestors to pile up on each other. As a result, Boyland was the first protestor to die that day, which was followed by the shooting of Ashli Babbitt inside the Capitol.

Anderson said he was knocked unconscious for a short while and then came back to his senses to watch Boyland die.

We were literally getting crushed to death and the police would not let us get up and go,” he explained. β€œβ€¦The problem was that’s what killed Rosanne Boyland. It wasn’t an overdose. I saw her in the tunnel, she was a-okay.”

The preliminary list of candidates for governor in the upcoming California recall does not include conservative radio host Larry Elder, though his campaign is adamant that it submitted all of the required documents, and is demanding inclusion.

 

California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber released the preliminary list of candidates who wish to replace incumbent Governor Gavin Newsom, should the electorate decide to remove him, on Saturday.

 

There are 41 candidates, including 21 Republicans, eight Democrats, two Greens, one Libertarian, and nine with β€œNo Party Preference.” Governor Newsom himself will not appear as a Democrat on the ballot due to an oversight by his campaign in his response to the recall.

 

The Associated Press reported:

 

California on Saturday released a list of 41 candidates running in the recall election targeting Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom that was striking for who wasn’t on it: conservative radio talk show host Larry Elder.

 

Elder, a Republican and regular guest on Fox News, announced his candidacy July 12, bringing a well-known voice on the political right to a Republican field trying to oust Newsom.

 

But he wasn’t on the list released by the Secretary of State of candidates who met the requirements to be placed on the Sept. 14 ballot.

 

Ying Ma, an Elder campaign spokeswoman, said she expected him to be on the final list of candidates issued next week. β€œOur campaign submitted every document required by the Secretary of State and the Los Angeles County Registrar” to qualify for the ballot, she said in a statement.

 

It wasn’t immediately clear what requirement Elder failed to meet.

 

The Secretary of State is set to release the final, certified list of candidates on Wednesday, July 21, 2021. The ballot will contain two questions: first, whether Newsom should be retained; second, which of the candidates should replace him. If a majority of voters chooses not to retain Newsom, then β€” and only then β€” the second question will count. It is likely that a winner from that list would become the governor with a plurality, not the majority, of the vote.

 

The Los Angeles Times notes that in 2003, when Arnold Schwarzenegger replaced incumbent Gov. Gray Davis, there were 135 candidates.

At least 25 people were shot, three fatally, Friday into Saturday night across Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s (D) Chicago.

 

NBC 5 reports the first shooting fatality occurred at 6:48 p.m. Friday, when a 26-year-old was fatally shot β€œin the 12000 block of South Union.”

Three of the four men sustained injuries only, but a 29-year-old was shot in the head and died at the scene.

 

The third death occurred about 1:45 a.m. Saturday, following an argument β€œin the 2800 block of West Van Buren Street.”

 

The argument ended with a 31-year-old man being shot in the head and fatally wounded.

 

Breitbart News explained 29 people were shot Wednesday alone in Mayor Lightfoot’s Chicago, and two of those shooting victims succumbed to their wounds.

While discussing the debate over critical race theory in schools, McWhorter said, β€œAfter last summer, there was this educational opportunity many of these people saw where you could start saying that you needed to do this within this racial reckoning, and if you don’t do it, you’re a racist.

 

Now, if anybody had tried to pull that, say, 15 years ago, it wouldn’t have worked, but now we have Twitter. So if you go against them,you get called a racist in the public square. For nine out of ten people, that’s enough to make them follow along. Because most of us are buying groceries and raising our kids. But the result of this has been truly dangerous.”

 

After the discussion turned to the concept of anti-racism, McWhorter said that things that aren’t racist get seen as racist, β€œSo, the common idea that you get nowadays, black kids tend not to do as well on standardized tests. Well, instead of saying, how do we get black kids to do better on them? Which is something that has happened in the past, the new idea is that you say, let’s just get rid of the test. Because the test must be racist. You don’t have to specify how.But if the black kids don’t do as well on it, the test is a racist practice. That’s a real leap.

 

That is a hyper-radical way of looking at things that I think most people, if presented with the mechanics of the argument, would think of as rather cruel, frankly, to black kids. That’s not the way to run a society, most of us would think. Some people might be able to make a case for it, but most of us wouldn’t agree with that.

 

But, instead, we’re being taught that if you’re not an anti-racist, you’re bad, and we’re going to embarrass you on Twitter. And, as a result, many people end up pretending to agree with ideas like this.”

CNN's Cuomo Tries to Prove Illegals Commit Less Crime, But It Backfires

On his Thursday night show, CNN host Chris Cuomo attacked Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) as a "misinformation spreader" that's "fearmongering about the border….I just don't see any other way to say it other than the Party of Trump is banking on BS. Republican leadership doesn't care about the threat of toxic talk."

 

But it's Cuomo's argument that flounders on the facts.

 

Without divulging the context that Senator Johnson was asking about non-citizens who were caught by Border Patrol crossing the border illegally, Cuomo showed him asking asking Ed Gonzalez, nominee for ICE director, if it was wise to allow so many teenaged male illegal immigrants into the country and ship them to cities without even letting residents know they are arriving. Johnson posed:

 

JOHNSON: Wouldn't you say a 15, 16, 17-year-old immigrant male fits the profile of someone who might be in a gang or would be recruited by a gang or be used by the drug traffickers to traffic their drugs, right? (editing jump) Isn't that what the reality of the situation is, this flood? We are letting in people who are potentially gang members – we are letting in people who are going to be trafficking drugs or human trafficking. Isn't that your experience as Houston's sheriff?

 

After Gonzalez asserted that he is opposed to "profiling and developing these stereotypes," Johnson, probably referring to racial profiling, denied that he was "profiling." Let's guess he was talking about violent gangs like MS-13, which CNN rarely admits is a problem. Violent gangs of illegal immigrants are just too….helpful to Trump's side or the argument.

 

Cuomo reacted by implying Johnson smeared every teenager sneaking across the border:

 

It's by definition profiling taking what someone looks like and putting them into a category of criminality because of how they look. That's profiling. Facts immigrants who are undocumented are much less likely to commit a crime. Why? Because they're scared of getting detected by the system and thrown out.

 

Briefly displayed on screen were the results of a study by CATO from a few years ago which concluded that illegal immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than do natural-born American citizens, which NewsBusters has previously pointed out is flawed because it blurs illegal border crossers with those who overstay visas.

 

Cuomo then brought up a recent report by the U.S. Sentencing Commission finding that 80 percent of those arrested for drug trafficking were U.S. citizens. With the report results displayed on screen, Cuomo asserted: "The vast majority of them are U.S. citizens."

 

The CNN spinmeister did not mention that only about seven percent of U.S. residents are noncitizens, meaning that, if 20 percent of those arrested are noncitizens, then noncitizens would be engaging in trafficking at a rate substantially higher than that of citizens. The report does not distinguish between legal noncitizens and illegal noncitizens.

 

Cuomo then portrayed Senator Johnson as a danger to national security:

 

By now, we're passed fact-checking what comes out of Ron Johnson's mouth because so much of it constitutes a domestic threat. You know what those other 49 Republican Senators swore to defend against? That. You want proof? Just name the danger. According to DHS under Trump, there were spikes in domestic threats driven by people stoking fears about immigration – in other words, what Johnson just did.

The influential Associated Press (AP) wire service has belatedly run a story about Barack Obama’s Marxist mentor without mentioning the smoking-gun evidence that the mentor, Frank Marshall Davis, was a Communist Party member. The dishonest story, which represents damage control for the Obama campaign, was written by AP writer Sudhin Thanawala.

 

AP is one of the largest news agencies and serves thousands of print and electronic media outlets.

 

Under the innocuous headline, β€œWriter offered a young Barack Obama advice on life,” the story calls Davis, a member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) when it faithfully echoed the Stalinist line, merely a β€œleft-leaning black journalist and poet” known for β€œleftist politics” and someone who might be accused by some of having β€œallegedly anti-American views.”

 

Davis was not a β€œjournalist” in any real sense of the term. He was a propagandist and racial agitator for the CPUSA. He was also a recruiter for the communist cause.

 

Media Bias

 

The slanted AP story features quotes only from supporters or friends of Davis and Obama. But those picked to defend Davis are themselves interesting.

 

Ah Quon McElrath, identified as merely β€œa friend” of Davis’s and quoted by AP, was actually an organizer for the communist-controlled International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU). The ILWU was led by Davis’s friend and associate, secret CPUSA member Harry Bridges. Davis wrote for a newspaper, the Honolulu Record, which was controlled by the CPUSA and subsidized by the ILWU.

 

McElrath is quoted by AP as saying, β€œYou could get a lot of strength from a person like Frank who had suffered all the discrimination…that a black man goes through in America.”

 

Davis went to Hawaii in 1948 after consulting with Bridges and Paul Robeson, another secret CPUSA member. He was a mentor to Obama during the years 1975-1979 and died in 1987.

 

Obama supporter Dr. Kathryn Takara is quoted in the AP piece as saying that β€œFrank was part of a group of black vanguard intellectuals.” Takara was the associate producer of a program about Davis that, like the AP story, ignored his CPUSA affiliation. So while she knows a lot about Davis, she seems blind to the evidence of Davis’s service to the communist cause.

Guilford County Detention Officer in ICU after unprovoked assault by inmate: Sheriff

A Guilford County Detention Officer is currently hospitalized in the intensive care unit, unconscious and breathing on a ventilator, after an unprovoked assault by an inmate Thursday.

 

Officer Sheldon Kaminsky's wife spoke out in an interview with WFMY News 2 on Sunday. She said her husband, who is 71 years old, has a long career in law enforcement and has been with the Guilford County Sheriff's Office for three years.

 

"I found out Thursday evening when I got a knock on my door at 11:30 at night from a sergeant coming to notify me that he had been taken to the hospital," Candy Kaminsky said.

 

The Guilford County Sheriff's Office provided initial notification of the assault on Friday, writing in a press release:

 

"Sheriff Danny H. Rogers reports that a Detention Officer at the Guilford County Detention Center in Greensboro was assaulted and injured by an inmate at 10:30 pm on Thursday, July 15, 2021. The attack was unprovoked. Our Detention Officer is being treated at the hospital and is currently in stable condition. No names or further details are being released at this time."

 

Candy Kaminsky said she was told by the sheriff's office that her husband, Officer Sheldon Kaminsky, was behind the officer's desk at the Guilford County Detention Center when the assault happened.

 

WFMY News 2 reached out to the Guilford County Sheriff's on Sunday with a list of questions, including about the assault and inmate involved. A spokesperson replied with the following statement:

 

"Sheriff Rogers declines to provide an interview at this time and asked me to reiterate that this incident was an unprovoked attack which left our Detention officer hospitalized since it happened. We are conducting a criminal investigation and will not discuss our findings or potential charges until it is done. Right now our primary focus has been to get our Officer the medical attention that he needs and to support his wife. This situation is an example of the dangers our Detention Officers face every day and how they risk their lives each day to keep the public safe."

 

Candy said she was told by the sheriff's office that "this inmate became irate for some reason, and entered the space behind the desk where inmates are not allowed. And he began to assault, and once he was down, he continued to assault him until other officers arrived."

 

Candy said her husband sustained multiple facial fractures and a traumatic brain injury during the attack, and has since been unconscious, sedated on a ventilator in the intensive care unit at Cone Health Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. He will require surgery this coming week to repair the facial fractures, Candy said.

 

"We are here from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day during visiting hours, just sitting with him," Candy said. "I've got kids that are really upset, my granddaughter that's really upset and the whole family is. We have siblings across the country that are just stressed."

 

Officer Kaminsky's family said they hope his situation draws attention to the dedication that many law enforcement and their family have to improving the community.

 

"I just want people to recognize that these officers on the streets, and these detention officers in the jail have families, and when things like this happen, it's not just the officer getting the little bump or bruise, and it's not just him, it's the rest of the family that has to deal with it also," Candy said.

 

Officer Kaminsky has three decades of experience in law enforcement, Candy said, including working in New Jersey and 22 years with the Los Angeles Police Department.

 

"I've been told by more than one of his coworkers that he is very well-liked by the inmates because he treats them fairly and with respect, and they are always happy to see him come on shift, because they know they'll be treated right. And that's how he's been his whole career. It doesn't matter if you're the good guy or the bad guy, he treats you with respect," Candy said.

 

Candy said that Sheriff Danny Rogers and coworkers at the sheriff's office have visited the family since the assault.

 

"For many many years, I was always prepared for that knock at the door, and it finally came. So we are mentally prepared to deal with everything, it's just not fun. It's hard," Candy said.

China reports its first death of a human from rare Monkey B virus

 

A man in China has died after contracting a rare infectious disease from primates, known as the Monkey B virus, Chinese health officials revealed in a report Saturday. The victim, a 53-year-old veterinarian based in Beijing, was the first documented human case of the virus in China.

He experienced nausea, vomiting and fever a month later, and died May 27. His blood and saliva samples were sent to the center in April, where researchers found evidence of the Monkey B virus. Two of his close contacts, a male doctor and a female nurse, tested negative for the virus, officials said.

 

The Monkey B virus, or herpes B virus, is prevalent among macaque monkeys, but extremely rare - and often deadly - when it spreads to humans. In humans, it tends to attack the central nervous system and cause inflammation to the brain, leading to a loss of consciousness, said Kentaro Iwata, an infectious disease expert at Kobe University in Tokyo. If untreated, there's about an 80 percent fatality rate.

 

There have been fewer than a hundred reported human infections of herpes B since the first case of primate-to-human transmission in 1932, many of them in North America, where scientists tend to be more aware of the disease, Iwata said. There are likely to be cases of the virus that have gone undetected, but experts still widely believe that it is an extremely rare condition among humans.

 

Victims have tended to be veterinarians, scientists or researchers who work directly with primates and could be exposed to their bodily fluids through scratches, bites or dissections. In 1997, a primate researcher in New York died six weeks after a caged monkey flung a drop of liquid at her face, hitting her eye. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there has only been one documented case of an infected human spreading the virus to another person.

 

Both herpes B and the novel coronavirus are "the consequence of species jumps," said Nikolaus Osterrieder, dean of the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences in Hong Kong. "But the important difference is that in the case from herpes B, it's a dead end. It's not jumping from one human to another human," he added.
