India rejects bids by Amazon & Flipkart to quash antitrust probe

An Indian court has turned down appeals by Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart to call off an antitrust investigation into their business practices in the country.

“By no stretch of the imagination can an inquiry be quashed at this stage. …The appeals are devoid of merit, and deserve to be dismissed,” the High Court in the southern Karnataka state said on Friday, adding that it saw the appeals as mere attempts to stall the court’s decision.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) launched an official inquiry last year into the practices of both US firms, following allegations from brick-and-mortar retailers that they promoted only certain sellers on their platforms and staved off competition.

The probe was put on hold after both companies challenged it, arguing that the regulator lacked evidence, but the court reopened it last month.

The two firms may still appeal the decision in India’s Supreme Court, Reuters reported, citing insiders.

Flipkart said in a statement that it would review the court’s order, maintaining that all its practices were in accord with Indian laws.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a Reuters’ request for comment. It is currently facing another CCI probe for allegedly concealing facts and making false submissions when it wanted the regulator to sanction a 2019 deal with an Indian company.

Valerie Jarrett: I’m All for Vaccine Mandates — ‘Time for Us to Take Firm Measures’

Former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett said Friday on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports” that she supported coronavirus vaccine mandates.

Jarrett said, “I’m all for mandating it. I know in this country, it’s hard to mandate things. I think what we can do is say, look, if you want them to make their own decision, fine, but we’re not going to let you come to sporting events or schools.”

Mitchell asked, “What about mandating it for healthcare workers?”

Jarrett said, “Absolutely. I am all for mandates, particularly for people who are interfacing with the public. The only way we can contain this disease, we know, is with vaccinations. So for public health workers, of course, they should be vaccinated, and for people working in our restaurant, of course, they should be vaccinated. I take a pretty hard line in terms of the mandates.”

She added, “We’re saying if you want to be a part of this society, our responsibility is to keep it as healthy as possible, take the vaccine.”

Mitchell asked, “What do you think about what the NFL is doing?”

Jarrett said, “I’m all for it. I agree with the doctor, mandate it, but short of that, you have to create both carrots and sticks.”

She concluded, “I think it is now time for us to take firm measures and try to get as many people vaccinated as possible, and where appropriate, there should be a mandate.”

The Swamp: Ken Buck’s Chief of Staff Unsuccessfully Sought Google Money Before Turning Anti-Google

Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) is attempting to position himself as the voice of bipartisan action against the tech giants, working with the Democrats on a range of bills sold to the public as efforts to rein in Silicon Valley. But just two years ago, his chief of staff, Garrett Ventry, was reportedly pitching his D.C. lobbying skills to Google.

Rep. Buck has been a leading voice in support of Democrat-led efforts to regulate Big Tech, including the widely condemned Journalism Competition and Preservation Act, which would make it easier for Big Media companies like CNN and News Corp to demand special favors from the tech giants.

Joining forces with the Democrats on the House Antitrust subcommittee, Rep. Buck presents himself as a champion against the power of the tech companies. His willingness to work with congressional Democrats (none of whom have ever suggested they will address the top conservative concern regarding big tech, censorship) has won him plaudits from the liberal media.

The Verge, a Vox Media-owned tech news site, recently called him the “new face of Republican antitrust.” But, according to a report in Politico, the current chief of staff to the so-called “face of Republican antitrust,” Garrett Ventry, was hoping to lobby for Google.

Together with the current head of the Internet Accountability Project, Mike Davis, Ventry pitched his services to Google in 2019.

Davis and Ventry offered to act as Google’s GOP communicators in a meeting with the company’s outside lawyers in May 2019, offering to help mend its relationship with conservatives, according to the three people, who requested anonymity to discuss private conversations.

At the time, Google was under increasing fire from the GOP, as then-President Donald Trump hammered the big tech companies for allegedly censoring conservatives and as Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) used his new perch in the upper chamber to offer bills that would crack down on the search company’s conduct. The Justice Department was also laying the groundwork for a major antitrust investigation of Google, a fact that would become publicly known at the end of that month.

The two men, who were at the beginning stages of forming a PR shop after they left the Senate Judiciary Committee, told Google’s outside lawyers Susan Creighton and Josh Soven that they could help with press relations and relationship-building within the GOP. The meeting was arranged by former Federal Trade Commission member Josh Wright, who worked with Creighton and Soven at the law firm Wilson Sonsini at the time.

After the meeting, Davis sent a follow-up email to Creighton leaving open the possibility of next steps. Ultimately, Google did not retain their services.

While Ventry declined to comment to Politico, Davis said he “dodged a bullet” by not working for Google, and claimed, “that was back before we knew how bad Google really was.”

Google’s wrongdoing was, however, widely known in the conservative movement by 2019.

Mercedes-Benz Plans to Go All-Electric by End of Decade

Daimler’s flagship auto maker intends to invest over $47 billion in battery electric vehicles by 2030

Mercedes-Benz AG DMLRY 5.20% said it is gearing up to go all-electric by the end of the decade, the latest move by an auto maker to accelerate its transition to plug-in cars.

The Daimler AG flagship said Thursday that it plans to invest more than €40 billion, or more than $47 billion, between 2022 and 2030 in battery electric vehicles to reshape its business around producing electric vehicles. The target signifies a shift from an electric-first to an electric-only approach, the company said.

As part of that plan, the company said all newly launched vehicle platforms will be electric-only from 2025, and customers will be able to pick electric versions for every model the company makes. Combustion-engine vehicles will still be available for purchase as long as there is demand, but Mercedes-Benz isn’t planning to develop new models of fuel-powered vehicles beyond 2030, Daimler said.

The company said eight Mercedes-Benz electric-vehicle models will be made at seven locations on three continents as soon as next year. Mercedes-Benz said it plans to set up eight factories for producing battery cells, as it will need a battery capacity of more than 200 gigawatt hours for the entire vehicle fleet.

On Wednesday, Michael Curzio pleaded guilty to one count of parading, demonstrating, or picketing in the Capitol building. The government offered the plea deal to Curzio’s court-appointed attorney in June; Curzio faced four misdemeanor charges, including trespassing and disorderly conduct, for his role in the Capitol breach.

Curzio will pay the government “restitution” in the amount of $500 to help pay for the nearly $1.5 million in damages the building reportedly sustained. (The Architect of the Capitol initially said the protest caused $30 million in damages but prosecutors have set the figure far lower.)

Curzio briefly entered the Capitol on January 6. He did not bring a weapon or assault police officers. In fact, he was arrested that day for trespassing, paid a fine, and was ordered back to Washington, D.C. in June for a court date. After leaving work on January 14, Curzio was pulled over a few miles from his Florida home. “Out of nowhere, police SUVs were in front, behind, and alongside my vehicle,” Curzio told me by phone Sunday afternoon. “The cops were screaming, ‘get out, get out’ and had their guns drawn.”

Curzio was arrested. Based on his criminal record—Curzio spent nearly seven years in jail for attempted first-degree murder—a Florida judge denied bond. (He was not on parole or probation.) Biden’s Justice Department took it from there.

Like dozens of defendants ordered held in D.C., Curzio spent a few weeks on buses and planes before he arrived at the jail that would be his home for more than five months. “I was in solitary at the Marion County (Florida) jail for eight days then transported by bus to another Florida jail. Then they took me to Jacksonville where I boarded a plane headed to Atlanta. Then to Oklahoma federal prison. Then to a jail in West Virginia and then Virginia. I finally got to D.C. on February 3.”

All detainees are required to quarantine in a single-man cell for 14 days under remaining COVID restrictions. But the jail conditions for January 6 defendants, which they refer to as “the pod,” aren’t much better. “It was just like being quarantined,” Curzio said. “We were locked down for 23 hours a day, only out for an hour to shower, talk to family, and talk to our lawyers.”

Curzio corroborates the accounts of other detainees, including reports of physical and mental abuse by prison guards, inedible food, and zero access to the outdoors, religious services, or physical activity. In-person meetings with lawyers are discouraged; if a detainee meets with his defense counsel, he must return to quarantine.

The detainees, despite the harsh conditions and unequal treatment by the U.S. justice system, nonetheless have found esprit de corps. They sing the National Anthem each night at 9:00 p.m. to keep spirits up.

While professional athletes are kneeling in protest for Black Lives Matter, a high school football coach is not allowed to kneel in prayer, according to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Coach Joe Kennedy, a Marine veteran being represented by First Liberty Institute, will file another appeal to the Supreme Court after a Court of Appeals panel declined to re-hear his case Monday, leaving a previous ruling in place, which stated the Bremerton School District did not violate his religious and free speech rights when they told him not to pray on the football field.

“So the same rights that give them the liberty to take a knee in protest for injustices even at the Olympics now. I mean, they could do that, but I can’t,” Kennedy said. “I’m a high school football coach. I can’t even take a knee for 10 seconds and say thanks to the God who created me, there’s something seriously wrong with the country right now.”

The case began in 2015 after Kennedy was fired by the school district. He was told in writing he could not bow his head, clasp his hands, or anything that appears to be prayer.

“Even if I happened to have just been down and tie my shoe, somebody would say, ‘Oh, look there, he’s kneeling again.’ And so, yeah, you can’t even close your eyes for a second. You can’t throw your hands up in the air during a play,” Kennedy explained. “It’s just so ridiculous to me how much, you know of free liberty is just been gone and taken away from us.”

CDC, Universities are Paying Students to be Vaccine Influencers

Students can become paid COVID vaccine influencers through a new Student Social Media Engagement Campaign program.

The campaign recruits students to ‘combat vaccine misinformation and build vaccine confidence within their campus communities’ through TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms.

In partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American College Health Association (ACHA), and Youth Marketing Connection (YMC), universities are promoting paid internships for students who push COVID vaccines.

Students chosen for the Student Social Media Engagement Campaign program will act as influencers who “combat vaccine misinformation and build vaccine confidence within their campus communities.”

The program launched in June 2021 and will continue through the fall semester. Each student influencer will receive a cash stipend, according to a July 8 announcement put out by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).

Job requirements include promoting the vaccine by sharing information on Instagram and TikTok, advocating for the ACHA’s CoVAC initiative, and leading “digital outreach efforts to increase vaccine confidence among peers.” Students are also expected to provide updates on campus COVID-19 vaccine attitudes.

The Student Social Media Engagement Campaign is part of the ACHA’s broader CoVAC initiative, which is designed to increase campus vaccinations and includes $3,000 mini-grants for colleges that want to implement marketing for the vaccine. Many campuses across the country have already mandated the vaccine for the Fall semester.

The ACHA did not respond to Campus Reform’s request for information on how internships are funded or on what other schools are participating.

Aside from UNLV, UC Cincinnati also announced its participation in the program when it highlighted a student ambassador on its website.

A regiment of Greek warriors, known for their courage and war, must in ancient times have carried a flag with the Lambda sign in front of them on their way to war. The myth will also know that by their side on the way to the battlefield there were a bunch of youngsters and male lovers. The character was chosen by a group of activists in 1970, as a symbol of the homopolitical movement, and gay associations and projects throughout the world have since added the name Lambda into their name.

History Edit

The Danish National Association of Gays and Lesbians (Landsforeningen for Bøsser og Lesbiske or LBL) originally had a local division in Odense, which between 1991 and 1993 hosted the Discotek club and ran the Café Pan in Sankt Anne Gade in central Odense. When the club was closed down, the whole board resigned in protest, and when the LBL didn't succeed in rebuilding the local division in Odense, a group of people decided to make a new gay community. They founded Lambda on 11 September 1993, after a meeting in Brandts Klædefabrik in Odense. In 1994 Pan Odense had to close again, and a lot of gay people didn't have a place to party. Lambda rented premises in the basement of Vindegade 100, with a café open on every Friday and Saturday, and a big Rainbowparty every other weekend until June 2005. In June 2005, Lambda had to move, as the building was going to be used for apartments. In October 2007 a new location was found in Odense Centrum.

In autumn 2005, Lambda started a collaboration with Studenterhus Odense, which was completed at the end of the year, due to the fact that Student Housing Odense had a mess in the economy, thus creating a residency for the association. Since March 2006 and 2007, Lambda had a party for homoseksuality at Club Retro / Boubous while the board worked to find new premises. From 2008 to 2010, the association has held parties in collaboration with a number of cafés and clubs in the city, including Blomsten and Bien, Mozaik and Globe.

Brogade Edit

At the club's 15th birthday, September 11, 2008, the association opened its doors for its new café in Brogade 3 in Odense . The association had taken over the premises already in November 2007, but the renovation of the premises, taken over after the "Optimist", pulled out. The renovation was largely done using voluntary labor.

The premises in Brogade must be considered a compromise in relation to what the association intended for relocating from Vindegade. The association had wanted premises that were located in street level opposite the premises in Vindegade, which were relatively hidden in the basement level. There was also a desire to be closer to the city center, and there should be room for both association activities and to have a café and disco. Brogade is located not closer to the city and there is also no room for big parties in the premises. On the other hand, the premises are in street level and there is room for both café and association activities.

Lambda's café is relatively well attended and had in 2009 a turnover of 356.000 kr.[1]

Activities Edit

There is ongoing collaboration with the Culture Machine in Odense, where Lambda's monthly parties are held. In addition, the association has cafe operations in Brogade 3, 5000 Odense C every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. In addition, there are several activities during the year. mentioned Copenhagen Pride.

Lambda's Groups Edit

Lambda has from the outset set up different groups aimed at different target groups. The association has among other things had an MC group, film group, youth group.

Rainbow Kids Edit

Rainbow Kids (formerly Family Group) focus on Rainbow families and have a number of social activities. The group is not so visible in the association itself as they do not meet in the association's premises.

Advice Edit

Advice is the group's most active group. Advice is offered to people with doubts about sexual orientation and / or gender identity.[2]

Info group Edit

The Info Group (formerly Go-Out Group) visits schools, associations and other interested in lectures on homosexuality. Among other things, the group is present on behalf of Lambda at the University of Southern Denmark's Studstartsmesse in Odense. The lectures are based on prejudices about homosexuality.[3]

Sports group Edit

The sports team consists of pt. of:
