Major disruption due as Melbourne's public transport is halted ahead of COVID lockdown protest

 

Police are out in force in central Melbourne this morning and public transport to the CBD is being suspended in a bid to disrupt planned anti-lockdown protests.

Key points:

 

Public transport to central Melbourne will stop between 8:00am and 2:00pm

A heavy police presence is expected in a bid to thwart anti-lockdown rallies

Only authorised workers and people with vaccination bookings will be allowed past checkpoints

 

The transport stoppage was called for by Victoria's Police Commissioner and has been backed by Melbourne's Lord Mayor, following violent clashes between police and protesters in central Melbourne last month.

 

Victoria's' Department of Transport has warned only essential workers or people attending vaccination appointments will be allowed into the CBD.

 

Anyone else risks being fined.

 

Public transport to central Melbourne is to be suspended for six hours.

 

Trains, trams and buses will not run to the CBD between 8:00am and 2:00pm and extra police will be stationed in the city to fine and arrest people trying to take part in anti-lockdown rallies.

 

Major roads into the city will also be closed, and access through roadblocks will only be granted to those travelling for authorised work with a valid permit, or with evidence of medical or vaccination appointments.

 

The CBD lockdown comes as Melburnians enjoy a modest easing of restrictions today.

 

Up to five adults from two households who have been fully vaccinated are now allowed to meet for a picnic or another outdoor social activity.

 

The amount of exercise or outdoor socialising allowed has doubled from two hours to four hours and people are now able to travel 10 kilometres from their homes.

'You will face a hefty fine', authorities warn

 

Significant delays are expected on roads leading to the CBD.

 

Head of Transport Services Nick Foa said a "limited, last-resort, safety-net bus service" stopping near Flagstaff Station and Jolimont Station would also only be available for essential workers.

 

"If you do not have a legitimate reason to travel … do not travel," he said.

An Adelaide man who admitted to filming himself sexually abusing children in Cambodia before publishing the videos online has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Geoffrey William Moyle, 48, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting multiple children between 2002 and 2005 while allegedly working as a foreign aid worker for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, a claim DFAT has refuted.

Described as an Australian first, a "very generous" out-of-court settlement was reached between Moyle and one of his child victims, though an exact dollar figure was not specified.

Moyle was sentenced to eight years and nine months in prison with a non-parole period of four years and six months.

He was also sentenced to nine months for possessing child exploitation material in Australia in 2019.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Paul Cuthbertson said Moyle was at a low risk of reoffending and described him as a "loving father, son and husband".

"He feels remorseful for his actions and takes responsibility for them," he said.

However, Judge Cuthbertson said he could not ignore the seriousness of the crimes.

"Over a period of approximately two to three years, the offender was involved in the most vile sexual activity against children of the age of about 10 to 12 years old," he said.

"He must have known the children he sexually assaulted will be exploited, that this activity towards them will likely wreck their lives and their futures."

In her impact statement, the only victim to be identified said she suffered serious trauma.

Judge Cuthberson told the court that she was very frightened and that Moyle treated her as if she was an object.

Moyle's nine-month state sentence for the child exploitation charges were backdated to when he was arrested in June 2019.

His Commonwealth sentence of eight years and nine months began at the end of that sentence.

He will be eligible for parole in 2024.

Speaking outside court today, Australian Federal Police (AFP) Detective Superintendent Gail McClure said law enforcement would "continue to work relentlessly to bring these sort of evil perpetrators to justice".

"I'd like to issue a warning to any other individual who would seek to prey upon vulnerable children: the AFP and its partners will come for you, no matter when the abuse occurred and no matter where you are in the world," she said.

"There's nowhere for you to hide."

In his online profile, Moyle stated he worked in Cambodia for a decade as the South-East Asia director of an international engineering consultancy company.

It stated he was "retained" by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) as a "specialist" under its Aid Advisory Panel.

The profile has since been deleted.

The charges included unlawful sexual intercourse with a child, commit indecent act on a child and possessing child exploitation material.

The sexual offences were committed in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, between 2002 and 2005, while the child exploitation offences were committed in Westbourne Park, Adelaide, in 2019.

Following his guilty pleas, the father of two sought to stop a suppression order on his identity being lifted.

He argued media reports of his identity would lead to "undue hardship" for his two young children, who were not the subject of any charges.

His lawyer provided the Adelaide Magistrates Court with two letters — one from a school psychologist and another from the children's grandparents — which explained the impact the publication of Moyle's crimes would have on them.

"The children are of a very tender age," he said.

He said they were already dealing with the "sudden absence of their father", who has been in custody since his arrest.

But Commonwealth prosecutor John Clover opposed the application, saying there was "no proper basis" for the suppression order to remain in place.

Magistrate Greg Fisher agreed and lifted the suppression order.

Moyle will be arraigned in the District Court in March before being sentenced at a later date.

In a statement provided to the ABC, DFAT distanced itself from Moyle, saying he has "never been employed by DFAT".

"The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has a zero tolerance approach to child exploitation and abuse," a DFAT spokesperson said.

"He worked for managing contractors that received funding from AusAID/Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade."

The spokesperson also said DFAT was not associated with Moyle at the time of his offending.

Vaccine advisers to the US Food and Drug Administration voted unanimously Friday to recommend emergency use authorization of a booster dose of Pfizer’s vaccine six months after full vaccination in people 65 and older and those at high risk of severe Covid-19.

 

Members of the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee had rejected a broader application – to approve the use of booster doses of Pfizer’s vaccines in everyone 16 and older six months after they are fully vaccinated.

 

So the FDA offered a revised question to vote on.

 

Members of the committee expressed doubts about the safety of a booster dose in younger adults and teens, and complained about the lack of data about the safety and long term efficacy of a booster dose.

PALO ALTO – A three-alarm fire Tuesday night destroyed a Palo Alto home tied to Google co-founder Larry Page and injured two firefighters, according to authorities and media reports.

 

The fire was reported at 8:10 p.m. in the 2100 block of Bryant Street, according to the Palo Alto Fire Department. Crews arrived to find “heavy fire on three sides of the structure and on both stories.” Flames were also threatening trees on one side of the residence.

 

The department said second and third alarms were called “as the fire proved to be a challenge for all involved.”

 

“PAFD crews worked diligently to gain control of the fire and prevent it from engulfing the rest of the structure and spreading to any neighboring properties,” the department said.

 

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries that did not require medical attention, according to the Daily Beast.

Clerk Peters returns to Grand Junction,vows to fight

Mesa County ClerkTina Peters appeared at an event in Grand Junction on Thursday night, vowing to fight investigations into her office, chastising the Colorado Secretary of State and asking supporters for donations to fund her legal defense.

 

“I’m so happy to be home. This is where my heart is and this is where we’re going to take back America,” Peters told a crowd gathered at Appleton Christian Church.

 

The event, which was livestreamed on the Stand For The Constitution Grand Junction Facebook Page, was billed as a “Stand With Tina” rally and featured a handful of speakers. It was Peters’ first public appearance in Grand Junction after an investigation into her office was announced in August.

 

“It’s places like Mesa County that can be the catalyst to take back our country. And we need your help,” Peters told the crowd. “And it starts today.”

 

In addition to detailing a website where supporters could contribute to her defense fund, standwithtina.org, Peters also explained some of the events that led the clerk to allegedly tamper with county voting machines, prompting an investigation by the Secretary of State’s Office as well as the District Attorney.

 

Peters said after the 2020 election, she received calls and emails from hundreds of residents who believed the election was illegitimate, and she began investigating those claims on their behalf.

 

Peters and her deputy, Belinda Knisley, are both the subject of local, state and federal investigations into possible criminal violations that involved revealing secure passwords and hard drives to Dominion voting machines with voter fraud conspiracy theorists. As a result, both also have been temporarily prohibited from conducting this fall’s elections and Secretary of State Jena Griswold is taking action to have Peters removed from election duties.

 

“Some powerful people don’t want us to look at the facts. In fact,they’re trying to remove me as the Mesa County Clerk and Recorder,” Peters said, pausing for the crowd before continuing, “just for doing my job.”

 

Peters also addressed the fact that she’s been working remotely since appearing at a voter fraud symposium in early August. The investigation into Peters was announced while she was at the South Dakota event and the clerk, until Thursday night, had not appeared in Mesa County since.

 

Peters also referenced Griswold directly, saying they disagree politically “and now, she has the arrogance to try and completely remove me.”

 

Peters ended her remarks with a plea to the audience to support her in the weeks ahead.
