How a Night Stalker pilot survived being shot down in Iraq and teamed up with Delta Force to go after the shooter

By 2004, US troops in Iraq knew that the success of their invasion and defeat of Saddam Hussein's forces the year prior would be short-lived.

The disbanding of the Iraqi Army, Iran's regional aspirations, and the influx of foreign fighters made Iraq a ticking bomb. It didn't take long for a sectarian civil war to break out, and in the middle of it were US and Coalition troops.

A central part of the US-led counterinsurgency was a brutal counterterrorism campaign led by the US's elite Joint Special Operations Command. Army Delta Force commandos, Rangers, and other special-operations units would hit target after target every night in an attempt to dismantle the terrorist networks.

For the vast majority of their operations, they relied on an elite aviation unit.

The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, also known as the "Night Stalkers," is the world's premier rotary-winged special-operations unit.

The Night Stalkers were formed in the early 1980s, after the failed attempt to rescue American hostages in Iran led to reforms of US special-operations forces. Since then, they have participated in almost every US military operation.

With a motto of "Night Stalkers Don't Quit" and commitment to deliver their cargo anywhere in the world within a 30-second window, the unit introduced itself to the general public during the "Black Hawk Down" battle in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1993.

The 160th flies three main kinds of helicopters.

The AH-6 Little Bird gunship conducts attack missions, and its counterpart, the MH-6, does transport and assault operations. The MH-60 Black Hawk does transport or assault operations and a gunship version, the MH-60 Direct action penetrator, conducts attack missions. The MH-47 Chinook conducts transport and assault operations.

In March 2004, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Greg Coker and another Night Stalker were flying an AH-6 to support special-operations troops in Amiriyah, a suburb of Baghdad.

"We were conducting a daytime mission, the first one since the Battle of the Black Sea in Somalia, I believe," Coker told Insider, referring to the battle in Mogadishu.

A daylight mission was highly unusual, as Night Stalkers prefer to operate in the dark. As they were flying at a low level, an insurgent fired a shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missile, striking the Little Bird and bringing it down.

In the eight seconds it took for the Night Stalker pilots to hit the ground, Coker and his copilot performed an autorotation maneuver, which uses air flowing up through the main rotor to keep that rotor turning, allowing them to crash-land the burning chopper.

Upon impact, the AH-6 rolled end over end before coming to a halt. Fuel was leaking everywhere, and ammunition was going off, creating a recipe for disaster.

Not many pilots who crash in combat survive to tell the tale. For Coker, who spent 30 years in uniform and completed 11 combat tours, the moments after getting hit were the worst.

That was "a moment of defeat. Scary as hell. Sheer terror," Coker told Insider.

"An old gun [gunship helicopter] pilot told me many years ago that 'a superior gun pilot is one that uses his superior knowledge that will keep him out of situations where he will have to use his superior skill.' Your training takes over and you go to work, focusing on the things that you can control," said Coker, author of "Death Waits in the Dark."

US forces in Iraq were aware insurgents had shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles and of the danger posed by those weapons, known as man-portable air-defense systems, or MANPADS.

That concern lurked around many military operations, and some civilian aviation activity, after a US covert-action program in the late 1980s armed Mujahideen in Afghanistan with FIM-92 Stingers to shoot down Soviet aircraft.

"There had been several helicopters shot down with a MANPAD in the area known as the Devil's Triangle — or at least that is what I called it. This triangle was Fallujah to Ramadi to Amiriyah," Coker said, adding that no one in the other crashed helicopters had survived.

The standard operating procedure when an aircraft goes down is to try to rescue the pilots. Quick-reaction forces composed of units in the region and a combat-search-and-rescue element in the theater — usually Air Force Pararescuemen and other Air Commandos — would normally respond to a crash.

A reconnaissance element of Delta Force's B Squadron had quickly arrived on the scene, and in true Hollywood fashion, the dazed Night Stalkers joined them in a raid on the house from where the missile had been launched.

CDC Vaccine Advisory Panel to Meet on Severe Condition Linked to J&J’s COVID-19 Vaccine

A panel of experts who advise the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on vaccines is meeting Thursday to discuss updates to a severe condition linked to Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine.

The panel will listen to presentations by CDC officials on thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS), which U.S. drug regulators say has a “causal relationship” with the jab, according to a draft agenda for the meeting.

The syndrome is a combination of blood clots and low blood platelet levels.

Concern over patients getting the syndrome after getting the vaccine led to a near-nationwide pause in administering the shot in the spring, but the pause was lifted after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined the benefits of the vaccine outweighed its risks.

Since then, more evidence has emerged linking the syndrome to the vaccine.

Researchers with the CDC last month found people who got the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) shot were far more likely to experience the syndrome when compared to people who got a Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

The reporting rate to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), a system run by the CDC and the FDA, was 3.55 per million doses administered for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, compared to 0.0057 per million doses administered after one of the other vaccines.

The rate was the highest among women aged 30 to 39.

As of Dec. 16, 1,700 cases of TTS following administration of J&J’s vaccine were reported to VAERS, according to an Epoch Times review of the database. There were also 1,429 reports of thrombosis and 265 reports of thrombocytopenia. Altogether, the conditions were said to have resulted in 89 deaths.

VAERS is a passive system that anyone can report to but studies have indicated the number of reports submitted to the system is an undercount of issues following vaccination.

The FDA updated fact sheets for the vaccine this week, warning people with a history of TTS following vaccination not to get the J&J jab. TTS is now listed as a contraindication. That means people can potentially obtain medical exemptions to vaccine mandates if they have had adverse reactions to adenovirus-vectored vaccines like the J&J shot.

“The FDA continues to find that the known and potential benefits of the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine outweigh its known and potential risks in individuals 18 years of age and older. Individuals should speak to their health care provider to determine which COVID-19 vaccine is most appropriate for their own situation,” the agency said in a statement.

J&J told news outlets in a statement that company officials have been working on understanding and communicating all known risks, including TTS, and “strongly support raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of this rare event.”

The CDC panel meeting starts at 12 p.m. Eastern. Members are scheduled to vote on “updated recommendations for use” of J&J’s vaccine at 2:30 p.m. Eastern, according to the draft agenda. The Epoch Times will stream the meeting on its website.

The panel is meeting “to hear the latest information on vaccines and disease epidemiology,” Jasmine Reed, a CDC spokeswoman, told The Epoch Times in an email when asked about the particulars of the vote and more details on the meeting.

Panel members weighed recommending officials list specific warnings to women under 50 who were considering or about to get the vaccine, but ultimately decided against that path.

The CDC tells clinicians that women younger than 50 “should be made aware of a rare risk of blood clots with low platelets following vaccination and the availability of other COVID-19 vaccines where this risk has not been observed.”

'Sex and the City' Reboot Is Not the Only Problem for Peloton

The biggest problem for Peloton’s cameo in the reboot of “Sex and the City” may not be the moment when Mr. Big drops dead of a heart attack after a 45-minute ride, a plot twist so startling and damaging to the brand that Peloton’s stock plummeted 11% overnight after the pilot episode premiered.

Rather, it is the scene in Episode 2 of “And Just Like That,” when Carrie is at home getting ready for Big’s funeral. The Peloton bike sits awkwardly in the passageway between the primary bathroom and dressing area, unused and already collecting dust.

The pandemic status symbol, which customers once waited two months to get their hands on, may soon become the modern equivalent of the 1990s NordicTrack: a high-priced piece of exercise equipment that becomes a glorified clothing rack, cluttering up a home until it is sold or dispatched to the curb.

Signs of its cultural downfall are hard to ignore. Sales of Peloton’s stationary bikes and treadmills fell 17% year over year in the third quarter of 2021, and the online resale market is flooded with used bikes selling at a discount.

Peloton’s appearance as an ill-fated plot device certainly doesn’t help. This past weekend, one seller posted an Instagram story showing his bike being carted off with the good-riddance caption, “And Just Like That …”

Like thousands of professionals during the early days of the pandemic, Laura and Charlie Weisman, a couple who live in New York, bought a Peloton when their gym, Chelsea Piers Fitness, closed during the lockdowns.

“We needed an outlet to work out,” said Laura Weisman, 31, a new business executive at a digital marketing agency. She paid $1,895 for the original model, plus $250 for the accessories package (shoes, weights, earbuds, heart rate monitor) and $39 for monthly access to online classes. She recalled a conversation with her father, who told her the bike would gather dust a year from now. “I said, ‘No way, this is the coolest thing. It will last forever.’ ”

But sure enough, “as soon as we were vaccinated” and the gyms reopened, she said, the couple stopped using their Peloton. “It doesn’t feel like it’s necessary anymore,” Weisman added.

Two weeks ago, the Weismans posted it on Facebook Marketplace, initially asking $1,350 for the bike, plus the Peloton-branded accessories. When no one bit, they lowered the price to $1,200; it sold last weekend to a woman who bought it for her teenage daughter.

While a quick sale may suggest that Pelotons are holding their value, it is worth noting that many were bought at the height of the pandemic, before the company slashed its prices. The base model, which originally retailed for $2,295, now sells for $1,495. (The Bike+, which was introduced in 2020 and has a screen that swivels and can be used for yoga and strength training, sells for $2,495.)

Now, those base models are being resold on sites like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace and eBay, with some selling below $1,000, according to recent searches.

“We recently downsized our apartment and the Peloton no longer fits,” reads one typical ad on Craigslist in New York. The seller is asking $800 for a Peloton bike and two pairs of cycling shoes. “Has probably been ridden 10 times.”

Kisha Anderer, 42, a stay-at-home mother in New York, hopes to get $1,500 or $1,600 for her Peloton bike but admitted, “I wish I would have sold it over the pandemic,” when the bikes were as hard to find as toilet paper.

China Poses Bigger Threat to Democracies After 2022 Winter Olympics, Expert Says

The communist regime in China is going to be a bigger threat to the international rules-based order after the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, a China expert warned.

“The regime is going to become, I would expect, even more hostile to the established order than it has been before,” said Bradly Thayer, adding the Games would embolden Beijing to increase its push against some democracies, particularly India and Taiwan.

Thayer is one of the founding members of the U.S.-based group Committee on the Present Danger: China (CPDC), and coauthor of the book “How China Sees the World.” He sounded the alarm on Dec. 15 during an EpochTV webinar titled “China’s Genocide Games.”

China also hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics and Thayer explained that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) sees the Games as an opportunity to boost its “prestige,” as well as “forcing the world to recognize what [the] CCP has accomplished.”

“It also allows Beijing to project the message that the future belongs to China,” he added.

Inside China, Thayer said that China’s current human rights abuses are “going to remain and certainly will tighten” next year after the Games.

The 2022 Winter Olympics are scheduled to start in China’s capital of Beijing on Feb. 4 next year and end on Feb. 20.

More than half a dozen countries have announced a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Games, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Lithuania, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The Biden administration announced the boycott on Dec. 6, saying Washington “cannot proceed with business as usual” in the face of the communist regime’s “ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity.”

In response to the U.S. boycott, China’s foreign ministry said that it will take “absolute countermeasures” and the United States will “pay a price” for its decision.

On Dec. 13, a coalition of more than 250 campaign groups—representing Tibetans, Uyghurs, Hongkongers, Chinese, Southern Mongolians, Taiwanese, and others—issued a joint letter, calling on European Union leaders to boycott the Games.

It was a “moral failure of the West,” Thayer said, that the Chinese regime was allowed to host the event. As for the U.S. diplomatic boycott, he said it was “the least” of what the United States should do.

“So much more should have been done by the Biden administration. They should have worked far earlier, to bring about a coalition of nations to send very important signals to the Chinese regime,” he said.

Some U.S. lawmakers have called on the Biden administration to impose a total boycott of the Games, meaning that U.S. athletes would not compete in the event.

The safety of U.S. athletes was also discussed during the webinar, particularly over whether the Chinese regime would kidnap U.S. athletes as retaliation against the United States.

On the kidnapping concern, Laura Harth, campaign director and human rights activist at Madrid-based Safeguard Defenders, said, “I would say it’s too far-fetched … imagine the backlash.”

However, she explained that the concern is still there considering the regime’s past record on hostage diplomacy and exit bans.

“I’d be very careful if I were just an athlete. And I’d be very careful I were the governments or the National Olympics Committee sending them,” Harth added.

Currently, the State Department’s travel advisory on China warns U.S. citizens that Beijing “arbitrarily enforces local laws” and that they could be wrongfully detained or subject to an exit ban “without due process of law.” What’s more, it also says the Chinese regime uses arbitrary detention to “gain bargaining leverage over foreign governments.”

Harth pointed to a case involving Jeff Harper, a former Iowa Wesleyan University basketball player. Harper was held in isolation at an apartment complex in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen for eight months before he was released in September 2020. He was detained and accused of causing a man’s death following an altercation.

In a recent report by Safeguard Defenders, Harper stated he lost 40 pounds during his solitary confinement. He was quoted as saying: “I would just sit around all day and do push-ups and work out. Stare out the window and look at the airplanes go by and hoping that this day would pass.”

“So I mean, this has happened. Why not again?” Harth said.

In electronic science, dissipation of energy is performed by an element called either a resistor or a conductor, the term "resistor" being the one generally used to describe a more ideal device (e.g., wire) employed to convey electronic energy efficie ntly from one location to another. The property of a resistance or conductor is measured as either resistance or conductance reciprocals.

In economics these three energy concepts are associated with:

Economic Capacitance - Capital (money, stock/inventory, investments in buildings and durables, etc.)

Economic Conductance - Goods (production flow coefficients)

Economic Inductance - Services (the influence of the population of industry on output)

All of the mathematical theory developed in the study of one energy system (e.g., mechanics, electronics, etc.) can be immediately applied in the study of any other energy system (e.g., economics).

SUMMARY

The people hire the politicians so that the people can:

(1) obtain security without managing it.

(2) obtain action without thinking about it.

(3) inflict theft, injury, and death upon others without having to contemplate either life or death.

(4) avoid responsibility for their own intentions.

(5) obtain the benefits of reality and science without exerting themselves in the discipline of facing or learning either of these things.

They give the politicians the power to create and manage a war machine:

(1) provide for the survival of the nation/womb.

(2) prevent encroachment of anything upon the nation/womb.

(3) destroy the enemy who threatens the nation/womb.

(4) destroy those citizens of their own country who do not conform for the sake of stability of the nation/womb.

Politicians hold many quasi-military jobs, the lowest being the police which are soldiers, the attorneys and C.P.A.s next who are spies and saboteurs (licensed), and the judges who shout orders and run the closed union military shop for whatever the market will bear. The generals are industrialists. The "presidential" level of commander-in-chief is shared by the international bankers. The people know that they have created this farce and financed it with their own taxes (consent), but they would rather knuckle under than be the hypocrite.

Thus, a nation becomes divided into two very distinct parts, a docile sub-nation [great silent majority] and a political sub-nation. The political sub-nation remains attached to the docile sub-nation, tolerates it, and leaches its substance until i t grows strong enough to detach itself and then devour its parent.

Fired McDonald's CEO Steve Easterbrook is forced to pay back $105 million in severance over claims that he lied about affairs with employees

Former McDonald's CEO Steve Easterbrook will return his severance pay — a figure estimated to be around $105 million — to his former employer to settle a lengthy lawsuit over his sexual relationships with employees.

"Last year, McDonald's filed an unprecedented lawsuit against Steve Easterbrook, our former CEO, to hold him accountable for his lies and misconduct, including the way in which he exploited his position as CEO," McDonald's chairman Rick Hernandez said on Thursday in a message sent out to McDonald's franchisees, company employees, and suppliers.

Hernandez expressed gratitude to an employee who "had the courage to speak up" about Easterbrook's misconduct.

"Steve has returned equity awards and cash that he would have forfeited had he been truthful at the time of his termination and, as a result, been terminated for cause," he wrote. "While Steve's misconduct need not be forgiven by any member of this community, he has apologized to his former co-workers, franchisees, suppliers, and the Board for the profound errors he made."

CNBC's Amelia Lucas firt reported on the results of the fast food chain's battle against its ex-chief officer.

Easterbrook lost the top job at McDonald's back in 2019 after the company found he "violated company policy and demonstrated poor judgment" involving a "consensual relationship" with an employee. At the time, investigators discovered that Easterbrook exchanged sexual texts and photos with a female employee. The fast food giant lost $4 billion in value in the wake of the scandal, as well as its chief people officer David Fairhurst.

Questions about Easterbrook's severance arose early on. The ex-CEO was eligible for a minimum of $702,255 in severance. He ended up receiving around $105 million.

But by August 2020, the conflict between McDonald's and its former leader heated up once more. The restaurant chain sued Easterbrook over allegations that he covered up sexual relationships with at least three McDonald's employees. Insider's Kate Taylor reported that Easterbrook and his friends became mainstays at Chicago's Viagra Triangle, an area where rich men go to pick up younger women, according to an ex-employee. In February 2021, one employee romantically connected to Easterbrook agreed to be deposed.

In a regulatory filing, the company said the settlement holds Easterbrook to account "over his misconduct, lies, and efforts to impede investigations into his actions." It noted that CEO "returned equity awards and cash, with a current value of over $105 million."

Easterbrook also apologized to the board and his former employees. "During my tenure as CEO, I failed at times to uphold McDonald's values and fulfill certain [sic] of my responsibilities as a leader of the company," he said in the filing.

Easterbrook's attorney did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
