Kentucky police arrest father for selling his juvenile daughter to another man for $8,000 after she got pregnant

 

Kentucky law enforcement officials have charged a man with sex trafficking after he allegedly sold his juvenile daughter to another man for $8,000.

 

Officials were made aware of the alleged crime after the girl gave birth to a baby boy in March.

 

Investigators said that 34-year-old Diego Alonzo-Perez of Beaver Dam, Kentucky, sold his daughter to 20-year-old Lucas Mateo. They alleged that she had been living with Mateo since August 2020.

 

Kentucky State Police began their investigation in November after finding out about the girl giving birth. Court documents claimed that she had been raped daily by the man who bought her from her father. An arrest citation said the man paid him $8,000.

 

"Many times we have preached that technology is the number one driver to a lot of these predatory-type crimes," said Kentucky State Police trooper Corey King to WTVW-TV, "but when it involves parents, that really, that really hits home to me, as a father myself."

 

Both the girl, whose identity remains private, and her baby were taken into foster care. WIVV-TV reported that the girl was 15 years old.

 

King said the incident was unprecedented for his department.

 

"Parents sold their child," said King. "That in itself is new for us here, but it's scary overall because now do some of these monsters have a face of a parent? That's really scary to me as a parent."

 

He added that although Kentucky ranks 26th in population, the state ranks 9th in human trafficking.

 

Alonzo-Perez was charged with human trafficking related to commercial sex activity and Mateo was charged with 3rd degree rape. Both are being held at the Ohio County Detention Center in Hartford.

 

Police said the investigation is ongoing and there may be more arrests and charges in the case.

Four years after the fall of Harvey Weinstein fired up the #MeToo movement, few areas of public life haven’t faced a reckoning over predatory male behaviour. So why has rock music remained untouched?

Princeton Marxists Protest Campus Appearance by ‘Trans Epidemic’ Speaker

 

Radical student group says fighting 'LGBT oppression' is part of 'fight for socialist future'

 

In the ultimate exhibition of campus intersectionality, student communists at Princeton University connected their protest of an author they view as "transphobic" to their fight to end capitalism.

 

"LGBT oppression has a central role in maintaining the capitalism means of production," Princeton's Revolutionary Student Action group wrote in a letter plastered around campus ahead of a speech by Abigail Shrier, author of Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters. "The liberation of the working class IS liberation from gender oppression!"

 

The student flier argues that combating Shrier's book, billed as a deep dive into what she calls a "trans epidemic" in young girls, was part of their "fight for a socialist future."

 

Revolutionary Student Action is a student branch of Workers' Voice, an openly Marxist organization that believes "capitalism can only be overcome through a socialist revolution." Its website, which is linked on the Princeton flier, says the group's mission is to "pave the road to communism" and a "classless society free of exploitation and oppression."

 

Shrier's Wednesday event was co-hosted by the Princeton Open Campus Coalition and the Princeton Tory, the school's conservative newspaper. The event was held at an off-campus location disclosed only to attendees, organizers told the Free Beacon, to protect students from harassment from groups like Revolutionary Student Action, which isn't recognized by the university.

 

"We are thrilled that the event itself took place without disruption, but the visceral reaction of certain Princeton community members is indicative of an ailing culture surrounding open discourse and robust dialogue," said Myles McKnight, president of the Open Campus Coalition. "We feel that students should be excited to engage with differing points of view on controversial issues about which reasonable people disagree."

 

Opposition to Shrier's event was not limited to the communist group. McKnight said several students reported being verbally harassed by peers who knew they were attending the event. Several students turned to social media to slam the university for allowing the event to proceed.

 

"This woman has openly demonstrated in her twt [sic] feed that she's arriving on campus with the mission of engaging in transphobic discourse with princeton [sic] students," one Instagram post shared with the Free Beacon reads.

 

Princeton's Gender and Sexuality Resource Center hosted a counter-event, a "teach-in" on transgender issues, Wednesday night in collaboration with the Princeton Pride Alliance.

 

Several prominent figures in recent years have faced backlash for deviating from the progressive line on transgender issues, both on college campuses and off. Kathleen Stock, a sex and gender researcher, resigned from the University of Sussex in October after mobs of students protested against her belief in the existence of biological sex. Internationally acclaimed author J.K. Rowling has been shunned for suggesting that the elimination of sex erases women—it is widely believed she was left out of the 20th anniversary celebration of her Harry Potter series because of her comments on transgenderism.

 

Shrier posted her full remarks at Princeton shortly after her appearance, in which she addressed the pushback she's gotten from many on the left.

 

"I'm not a provocateur. I don't get a rush from making people angry," Shrier said. "You don't have to be a troll to find yourself in the center of controversy. You need only be two things: effective, and unwilling to back down."

 

The communist letter said Shrier's appearance "put people's lives at risk by further marginalizing them."

The latest Tax Office transparency report shows the oil and gas juggernauts are, again, Australia’s biggest tax grifters. Callum Foote and Michael West report on the good and the bad in multinational tax-dodging land.

 

The usual suspects are at it again. Dodging tax that is, failing to contribute to the society in which they operate. Rupert Murdoch, the cuff-linked pirates from Brookfield, Lendlease, and a slew of foreign multinational fossil fuel companies, the likes of Exxon, Shell, ConocoPhillips and BG Group. Donut. Zero income tax payable all round, for yet another year.

 

When we calculate the annual Michael West Media Top 40 Tax Dodgers, it’s a cert that America’s biggest oil company Exxon will top the charts once again. ExxonMobil Australia booked total income of $15.6 billion for the 2019-20 year, managed to completely extinguish its profits – thanks to the customary “debt-loading” – and paid not one red cent in income tax.

 

That’s $71.3bn in income over the seven years of available Tax Office transparency data. Zero tax from Exxon. And a piddling amount no doubt from the PRRT, the miserable failure of a tax which is supposed to capture a portion of the massive mineral wealth which Australia exports each year.

 

Each year, just once a year, we get to see how much tax the biggest companies in the world are, or are not, paying in Australia. It landed today, that is the annual Corporate Tax Transparency Report from the Australian Tax Office.

 

Broadly in trends, the oil and gas companies were the worst. The usual property groups such as Meriton, Brookfield’s BPIH, Toga and Lendlease paid not a zac. Neither did the big trusts such as Mirvac, Transurban and Sydney Airport, although they are trusts so don’t have to; that’s up to their members.

 

Once again the domestic banks paid their fair share. BHP and Rio did too. Iron ore magnates Gina and Twiggy paid roughly $1.3bn and almost $3bn respectively. The airlines as usual paid nothing, as did gas giants Santos and Origin Energy. Nothing from Adani Abbot Point, or coal companies Whitehaven and Peabody.

 

Murdoch’s News Australia Holdings paid nothing for the seventh year on the trot, despite $1.7bn in income, and Foxtel – as reported here – has been conveniently and slyly “disappeared” offshore to the secrecy jurisdiction of Delaware amid rumours of a sharemarket float.

 

Goldman Sachs finally bounced into the status of a taxpayer, as did tech groups Atlassian, Uber and Facebook; and Glencore is now paying a chunky amount. PwC ‘s consulting business again paid zero, this time on $700m in income.

HOW THE USA PATRIOT ACT REDEFINES "DOMESTIC TERRORISM"

 

Section 802 of the USA PATRIOT Act (Pub. L. No. 107-52) expanded the definition of terrorism to cover ""domestic,"" as opposed to international, terrorism. A person engages in domestic terrorism if they do an act "dangerous to human life" that is a violation of the criminal laws of a state or the United States, if the act appears to be intended to: (i) intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination or kidnapping. Additionally, the acts have to occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States and if they do not, may be regarded as international terrorism.

 

Section 802 does not create a new crime of domestic terrorism. However, it does expand the type of conduct that the government can investigate when it is investigating "terrorism." The USA PATRIOT Act expanded governmental powers to investigate terrorism, and some of these powers are applicable to domestic terrorism.

 

The definition of domestic terrorism is broad enough to encompass the activities of several prominent activist campaigns and organizations. Greenpeace, Operation Rescue, Vieques Island and WTO protesters and the Environmental Liberation Front have all recently engaged in activities that could subject them to being investigated as engaging in domestic terrorism.

 

One recent example is the Vieques Island protests, when many people, including several prominent Americans, participated in civil disobedience on a military installation where the United States government has been engaging in regular military exercises, which these protesters oppose. The protesters illegally entered the military base and tried to obstruct the bombing exercises. This conduct would fall within the definition of domestic terrorism because the protesters broke federal law by unlawfully entering the airbase and their acts were for the purpose of influencing a government policy by intimidation or coercion. The act of trying to disrupt bombing exercises arguably created a danger to human life - their own and those of military personnel. Using this hypothetical as a starting point, we will go through the USA PATRIOT Act and explore the new governmental powers that could be brought to bear on Vieques Island protesters whose conduct falls within the overbroad definition of domestic terrorism.

Moon to align with 3 planets on Friday evening

Jupiter, Saturn and Venus have lined up in the evening sky and will continue to be prominent features throughout most of December, but this week, the trio will get a visitor.

 

The easy-to-find planets, paired with the approaching peak of the Geminid meteor shower, make December a great month for evening stargazing. The only caveat is that the weather can be fickle during the long December nights, often offering frosty conditions on nights that are not cloudy.

 

This week in particular will provide a good opportunity to view the planetary alignment as the crescent moon will join the show, eventually falling in line with Jupiter, Saturn and Venus.

 

The moon started off the week next to Venus, and as the week progresses, it will continue to move up the chain, passing by Saturn and Jupiter. These close encounters will be great opportunities for photographers and stargazers with a telescope hoping to see a planet and the moon in the same field of view.

Seizure of assets - Sec. 806: Section 806 of the Act could result in the civil seizure of their assets without a prior hearing, and without them ever being convicted of a crime. It is by far the most significant change of which political organizations need to be aware. This language is broad enough to authorize the government to seize any assets of any individuals involved in the Vieques Island protests or of any organization supporting the protests of which the person is a member, or from any individuals who were supporting the protesters in any way. Possible supporters of the protesters could include student organizations that sponsored participation in the demonstration, the Rainbow/Push Coalition, the Rev. Sharpton's National Action Network, and religious or community organizations that provided housing or food to the protesters.

 

The civil asset forfeiture power of the United States government is awesome. The government can seize and/or freeze the assets on the mere assertion that there is probable cause to believe that the assets were involved in domestic terrorism. The assets are seized before a person is given a hearing, and often without notice. In order to permanently forfeit the assets, the government must go before a court, but at a civil hearing, and the government is only required to prove that the assets were involved in terrorism by a preponderance of the evidence. Because it is a civil proceeding, a person is not entitled to be represented by an attorney at public expense if they cannot afford to pay an attorney. The time between seizure and forfeiture can sometimes be months; meanwhile, organizations or individuals whose assets are seized are forced to make do without the assets. Only the most financially flush non-profit organizations would be able to successfully defend themselves against government forfeiture. In short, without the full due process afforded in criminal cases, the U.S. government can bankrupt political organizations it asserts are involved in domestic terrorism.

Disclosure of educational records - Sec. 507: This provision of the USA PATRIOT Act requires a judge to issue an order permitting the government to obtain private educational records if the Attorney General or his designee certifies that the records are necessary for investigating domestic or international terrorism. No independent judicial finding is required to verify that the records are relevant. This means that the Attorney General may obtain the private educational records of a student involved in the Vieques protests by asserting that the records are relevant to a domestic terrorism investigation. These records may include information such as a student's grades, private medical information (counseling, abortions), which organizations the student belonged to, or any other information that the educational institution collects about its students.

 

Disclosure of information from National Education Statistics Act - Sec. 508: This provision of the USA PATRIOT Act requires a judge to issue an order for the government to obtain educational records that have been collected pursuant to the National Education Statistics Act. NESA includes a vast amount of identifiable student information from academic performance to health information, family income, and race. Until now, this information has been held to strict confidentiality requirements without exception. Again, all the government needs to certify is that the information is relevant to a terrorism investigation and the court has no choice but to issue the order.

 

Single-Jurisdiction Search Warrants (Sec. 219): This section of the USA PATRIOT Act amends Rule 41(a) of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure to authorize the government to go before a singe Federal magistrate judge in any judicial district in which activities relating to the terrorism may have occurred, to obtain a warrant to search property or a person within or outside the district. This means that the government could go to a single judge to get a warrant to search the property or person of the Vieques activists in New York, Chicago, California, or wherever else the protesters were from. If the government chose to go before a magistrate in New York, a person in California, who wished to seek to have the warrant quashed because he or she believed it was invalid, would have to find a way to appear before the New York court that issued the warrant. This would be a daunting task for most.

Since passage of the PATRIOT Act, two other new laws have passed that implicate domestic terrorism.

 

Taxpayer Information - 26 U.S.C.A. Sec. 6103(i)(3)(C) requires the Secretary of the Internal Revenue Service to provide taxpayer information to the appropriate Federal law enforcement agency responsible for investigating or responding to the terrorist incident. If abused, this provision could be used by law enforcement to gain access to confidential taxpayer information of political protesters.

 

Regulation of biological agents and toxins - 42 U.S.C.A. Sec. 262a and 7 U.S.C.A. Sec. 8401 regulate biological agents and toxins. If a person is involved with an organization that engages in domestic or international terrorism, he or she is not permitted to gain access to these regulated agents. Under the law, the Attorney General identifies individuals involved in "terrorism" to the Department of Agriculture. Once the person is listed, he or she cannot get access to any of the regulated agents or toxins. This provision will probably not impact most people, however, it might impact someone such as a scientist who might regularly use biological agents or toxins in their work.

 

Conclusion - The ACLU does not oppose criminal prosecution of people who violate the law, even if they are doing it for political purposes. However, we do oppose the broad definition of terrorism and the ensuing authority that flows from that definition. One way to ensure that the conduct that falls within the definition of domestic terrorism is in fact terrorism is to limit the scope of the conduct that triggers the definition. Thus, domestic terrorism could include acts which "cause serious physical injury or death" rather than all acts that are "dangerous to human life." This more narrow definition will exclude the conduct of organizations and individuals that engage in minor acts of property damage or violence.

And Other Speculations about the World’s First Sea Trading Empire

 

Chances are, if you have heard about the Phoenicians at all, it was probably in the context of the origin of the alphabet. However, in the last decade or so, a picture has begun to emerge about this mysterious culture that should actually be fascinating to futurists and those interested in the history of science and ideas. This mysterious group of seafarers created the first true naval empire, served to accelerate both the bronze and the iron age, may have have brought red hair to the Irish, and may actually be the real reason that Christianity spread so quickly two millennia ago.

 

Please note that much of this is speculation. While we are getting a better idea about history through genetic drift in populations, most of this essay takes place at the very rise of civilization, some of it going back 10,000 years or more, and much of it involves a culture that, despite having invented the alphabet, left almost nothing in their wake about what kind of culture and society they had.

 

Cedar and Bronze

If you look at most ancient settlements, the one defining character of most of them was the use of fired bricks of mud. It would take the combination of bronze nails and access to trees for lumber-based construction to take place, and even there, it was far more likely that the lumber was used not for houses but for boats.

 

These exact origins of these inhabitants is still unknown, though Qatar or Bahrain, on the Eastern Arabian peninsula, has been proposed. Bahrain in particular is notable for being an island, and as such reachable only by boats. This suggests that it might have been an ideal place for a sea faring culture to originate, one capable of going beyond the immediate visible horizon. Boats are interesting because they require so many skills to make — an understanding of keels and sails, the manufacture of metallic tools capable of chiseling and shaping wood, harnessing the power of fire.

 

In time, the temperatures began to warm, and as they did so, the benefits of lighter shades began to decline in comparison to the health costs — light hair and skin meant a higher incidence of cancer and higher levels of melanin provided greater levels of protection. In some parts of this population, the gene for expressing red hair itself disappeared, especially towards the east. Small isolated villages learned (or possibly relearned) the art of agriculture, and over time the population increased. The ancient city of Ur (which would eventually become Bagdad, Iraq) sprang up as stone working using ziggurats (an early kind of pyramid) became commonplace, eventually followed by Babylon, Ninevah and others.

 

The Babylonians the first historical Mesopotamian culture, spoke of the god Ea, the god of the sea, who came ashore in a mail of scales like a fish, bringing with him the gifts of law and writing and fire, in essence the rudiments of civilization. These seem strange gifts for a sea god, especially given that Ur was still several hundred miles from the nearest major body of water beyond the Tigris and the Euphrates. Yet perhaps this strange tale was a mythic retelling of traders coming on shallow water boats from distant Bahrain, bringing with them a technology that was almost alien in nature — early Bronze swords and plowshares, smelting furnaces and an accounting system, and the first codification of sea laws upon cuneiform tablets. Ea would in time become known as Oannes, and later Noah, he who saved the animals from the flood in Biblical legend. In the Phoenician pantheon he was Yum, god of underwaves and wisdom, and even millennia later, Yum had a place apart above the trading ships of the Phoenicians, the Canaanites, the Carthaginians.

 

It is not hard to imagine colonies springing up in Ur (which was on the Persian Gulf at the time) then up both the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, on flat-bottomed boats manned by these proto-Phoenicians. They spread westward with the Babylonians through Sumer and Assyria, part of the migration but distinct from the peoples around them, until they eventually made their way to the Levant, eventually encountering (and influencing) the Hittite cultures in Southern Turkey even as they found one of the most important resources a sea-faring culture could have … wood.

Two people were killed and five others were injured Friday evening as a tornado moved through Monette at a local nursing home, according to Craighead County Judge Marvin Day.

 

Day said at least 20 people were trapped inside the nursing home Friday.

 

A strong storm system Friday caused the National Weather Service to issue several tornado warnings for the region.

 

There were reports of damage in the Monette and Leachville areas, especially near the Monette Manor area, due to storms.

In football, you'd like to score a touchdown with each play. Every player on offense lines up facing the end zone every down. And every time the ball is snapped, every player on offense is looking for that opportunity to make the touchdown happen. The touchdown is the strategic goal of every drive.

 

But situationally (or tactically), scoring a touchdown may not be the offense's immediate, tactical goal. If it's third down and two, they're gonna run the ball and they're going to try to get two yards and an inch, because that buys them another first down. Those two yards are more important tactically than the touchdown. If the guy runs for two yards and then 57 more for a TD, awesome: strategic victory. But if he manages to push his way over that line by an inch, they've won the tactical victory even though the strategic one is still at least one more play away.

 

This is how any serious man evaluates the Patriot Front action this weekend. There are little boys & girls running around slagging them because a peaceful march didn't accomplish their strategic goals. Are you freaking kidding me? They did not leave their homes that morning expecting to score a touchdown. They were looking to move down the field on 1st and ten. And they did, in spades.

 

They demonstrated that they could muster and deploy hundreds of men. They demonstrated that they could do so in secret. They demonstrated that they could interact or avoid interacting with others in a way that ensured their successful departure at the end of the evening. Everyone got home, no one got hurt. Our enemies were badly shaken by it. They gained ground, and they did it in a manner above reproach. That is a huge tactical victory, any way you slice it.

 

The whining little girls who are afraid to even snap the ball because they might lose yards will never gain an inch for anyone. And far worse than that, their impotence would guarantee our strategic defeat. Serious men understand this. Everyone else needs to shut up, watch, and learn.

Health Minister Yvette D'Ath said the changes will come into effect on January 1.

 

"The quarantine arrangements will be, if you are a close contact and you are vaccinated, from 1 January, you will only need to quarantine for seven days and get a test on day five and when you get that negative test, after day seven you will be able to be released," she said.

 

"From day eight to 14 there will be requirements for you, we want you to wear masks everywhere you are outdoors and you are required to avoid high-risk settings.

 

"So when you are still in that day 8 to 14 period as a close contact, we don't want you going into hospitals, aged care facilities, correctional facilities, youth detention centres and disability facilities."

 

Ms D'Ath said under national guidelines a close contact is someone who has spent more than 15 minutes exposed to a confirmed case.

 

Changes to quarantine arrangements for those who live in the same household as an individual identified as a close contact will also kick-in on January 1.

 

"If you a vaccinated household contact of a close contact, you do not need to quarantine but you will need to get tested on day one and day five," Ms D'Ath said.

 

"But if you are unvaccinated and a household contact and you're not able to separate from that contact in a household you will need to do the same seven day quarantine and comply with the same requirements for days eight to 14.

 

"For unvaccinated close contacts, the rules remain the same. From 1 January those people will need to continue to quarantine for 14 days, immediately get tested and then again on day five and day 12."

The event, called the Festival of Hope, was a fundraiser for the anti-child-sex-trafficking group Operation Underground Railroad, which was founded in Utah in 2013 and has achieved immense popularity on social media in the past year and a half, attracting an outsize share of attention during a new wave of concern about imperiled children. It is beloved by parenting groups on Facebook, lifestyle influencers on Instagram, and fitness guys on YouTube, who are impressed by its muscular approach to rescuing the innocent. (The nonprofit group is known for taking part in overseas sting operations in which it ensnares alleged child sex traffickers; it also operates a CrossFit gym in Utah.) Supporters commit to “shine OUR light”—the middle word a reference to the group’s acronym—and to “break the chain,” which refers to human bondage and to cycles of exploitation.

 

Oakdale, a small city near Modesto, is set among ever-dwindling cattle ranches and ever-expanding almond farms. By 9:30 a.m. on a Saturday in late summer, more than 100 booths lined the perimeter of the rodeo arena. Vendors sold crepes and jerky and quilts and princess makeovers and Cutco knives. (They paid a fee to participate, a portion of which went to OUR, as did the proceeds from raffle tickets.) Miniature horses with purple dye on their tails were said to be unicorns. A man with a guitar played “Free Fallin’ ” and then a twangier song referring to alcohol as “heartache medication,” which was notable only because it was so incongruously depressing; everyone else was enjoying a beautiful day in the Central Valley. The air was filled with the perfect scent of hot dogs, and with much less wildfire smoke than there had been the day before.

 

At the OUR information booth and merchandise tent, stickers and rubber Break the Chain bracelets were free, but snapback hats reading Find Gardy—a reference to a Haitian boy who was kidnapped in 2009—cost $30. Shellie Enos-Forkapa had planned the day’s event with help from three other Operation Underground Railroad volunteers, two of whom she had originally met through the local parent-teacher association. She was wearing an official Festival of Hope Benefiting Operation Underground Railroad T-shirt and earrings shaped like red X’s, a symbol often paired with the anti-trafficking hashtag #EndItMovement. “Oakdale has been so welcoming,” Enos-Forkapa told me. “They’re behind the cause.”

 

The women were busy dealing with festival logistics, but during a brief lull another volunteer, Ericka Gonzalez, drew me over to a corner of the tent to show me a video on her phone, which she thought might be called “Death to Pedos” but wasn’t. It was called “Open Your Eyes,” and Gonzalez pulled it up in the Telegram messaging app. “From the time we were little kids we revered the rich and famous,” the voice-over began, as images of celebrities and of battered children flashed on the screen. As I started to take notes, she pulled the phone away and wondered aloud if she had done something she shouldn’t have.

 

I watched the rest of the video a few minutes later, on my own phone. “We are digital soldiers, fighting the greatest war the world has never seen,” the voice-over explained. The bad guys: Barack Obama, Ellen DeGeneres, Lady Gaga, Chuck Schumer, Tom Hanks, Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton. The good guys, a much smaller team: Donald Trump, Ivanka Trump, Barron Trump, Jesus, and an unidentified soldier holding a baby swaddled in an American flag. And, by implication, me, the viewer. “Our weapon is truth,” the voice-over continued as music swelled in the background. “We’ll never give up, even if we have to shake everyone awake one by one.”

 

The provenance of the video was unclear—it was not affiliated with Operation Underground Railroad and bore no resemblance to the official materials its volunteers had been handing out—but the term digital soldier rang a bell. It was a reference to a QAnon conspiracy theory that emerged in 2017 on an out-of-the-way message board and describes Donald Trump as a lone hero waging war against a “deep state” and a cabal of elites who are pedophiles and child murderers; these conspirators will soon be exposed—and perhaps brutally executed—during a promised “storm.” Notably, the video isn’t asking for money, and isn’t presenting an argument. It’s more like a daily devotional for people who already believe in its premise, or something like it.

Face mask litter surged 9,000% due to Covid-19 – study

 

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic and mask mandates rolled out by governments worldwide have caused an “exponential increase” in face mask pollution, comprehensive research based on data collected in 11 countries suggests.

 

The damning study by a team of researchers with the University of Portsmouth was published in the Nature Sustainability journal on Thursday.

 

The group conducted a comprehensive study of personal protective equipment (PPE), observing an “exponential increase” in such litter amid anti-coronavirus measures. Their findings are based on data collected across 11 countries, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, the UK, and the US, using a litter collection application Litterati.

 

The research spans 14 months, with September 2019 figures used as the baseline. Covid-related litter began to grow at alarming rates in March 2020, when the spread of the virus turned into a full-blown global pandemic, with governments worldwide introducing various restrictions, including mandatory face mask-wearing.

 

“Overall the study shows the impact that legislating the use of items such as masks can have on their occurrence as litter. We found that littered masks had an exponential increase from March 2020, resulting in an 84-fold increase by October 2020,” Dr. Keiron Roberts, lead researcher with the University of Portsmouth, said.

 

Among the countries sampled, the UK has shown the “highest overall proportion of masks, gloves and wipes as litter,” according to the study. In August-October 2020, for instance, masks accounted for more than 5% of all litter produced there, with wipes and gloves accounting for a further 1.5%.

 

The nearly 9,000% increase in PPE litter clearly shows the enforcement of face mask-wearing “must be accompanied with education campaigns to limit their release into the environment,” Roberts added. While pandemic-related restrictions, such as curbs on international travel, have had a minor positive impact on the environment, the skyrocketing PPE pollution has become truly alarming, the researchers said.

 

“In April 2020, it was beginning to appear that there were some small positives in the decrease in human activity caused by lockdown, with improvements in air quality and water quality. Reduced human activity also saw reports of animals coming back to towns and cities,” Roberts stated, adding that masks also began appearing “where they hadn’t been before.”

I used to work with them off and on professionally. We always had a good relationship and used to loan them guys for long details. (CNN) – The CEOs of Target, Best Buy, Nordstrom, Home Depot and CVS are among a group of 20 retail leaders who sent a letter Thursday to Congress expressing their concern over a recent wave of brazen store robberies in major US cities and urged lawmakers to take action.

 

The group called on Congress to pass legislation that would deter criminals from being able to easily resell stolen merchandise, specifically online.

 

"As millions of Americans have undoubtedly seen on the news in recent weeks and months, retail establishments of all kinds have seen a significant uptick in organized crime in communities across the nation," the letter said.
