A well- crafted "c&c" allowed us to show what we did or didn't know about at least two historical events and, at the same time, forced us to think and to put things into perspective. Our only regret is that our professors seemed to leave almost all such analysis to callow students, engaging in much too little of it in their all-too-linear lectures.

 

To demonstrate the strength of the "compare and contrast" method in elucidating history,I propose herewith to apply it to the Dreyfus Affair, which began with the arrest of Captain Alfred Dreyfus in France on suspicion of treason in October of 1894, and the Vincent Foster case, which began with the discovery of the deputy White House counsel's body almost a hundred years later, on July 20, 1993. As the Dreyfus Affair disrupted France, the Foster death, and its handling by the authorities, has shown signs that it will haunt the U.S. government into the next century.

 

Perhaps too much has been made of the relationship between the official framing of Captain Dreyfus and French anti-Semitism. By regarding it so, we are able to distance ourselves from it, treating it as just one more example of the irrational behavior that mindless bigotry can engender or, alternatively, we are tempted to dismiss it as an episode which has been kept alive in history by the same powerful and influential people who keep reminding us of our collective guilt for allowing the Holocaust.

At the same stage in the developments, the Foster death would seem to be relatively more important and the official findings at least as dubious. Foster, though little known to the public, was the second ranking person in the White House legal office and a long- time associate of the First Lady, Hillary Clinton. Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Strong, credible allegations of high-level criminal activity can bring down a government. When the government lacks an effective, fact-based defense, other techniques must be employed. The success of these techniques depends heavily upon a cooperative, compliant press and a mere token opposition party.

 

  1. Dummy up. If it's not reported, if it's not news, it didn't happen.

  2. Wax indignant. This is also known as the "How dare you?" gambit.

  3. Characterize the charges as "rumors" or, better yet, "wild rumors." If, in spite of the news blackout, the public is still able to learn about the suspicious facts, it can only be through "rumors." (If they tend to believe the "rumors" it must be because they are simply "paranoid" or "hysterical.")

  4. Knock down straw men. Deal only with the weakest aspects of the weakest charges. Even better, create your own straw men. Make up wild rumors (or plant false stories) and give them lead play when you appear to debunk all the charges, real and fanciful alike.

  5. Call the skeptics names like "conspiracy theorist," "nutcase," "ranter," "kook," "crackpot," and, of course, "rumor monger." Be sure, too, to use heavily loaded verbs and adjectives when characterizing their charges and defending the "more reasonable" government and its defenders. You must then carefully avoid fair and open debate with any of the people you have thus maligned. For insurance, set up your own "skeptics" to shoot down.

  6. Impugn motives. Attempt to marginalize the critics by suggesting strongly that they are not really interested in the truth but are simply pursuing a partisan political agenda or are out to make money (compared to over-compensated adherents to the government line who, presumably, are not).

  7. Invoke authority. Here the controlled press and the sham opposition can be very useful.

  8. Dismiss the charges as "old news."

  9. Come half-clean. This is also known as "confession and avoidance" or "taking the limited hangout route." This way, you create the impression of candor and honesty while you admit only to relatively harmless, less-than-criminal "mistakes." This stratagem often requires the embrace of a fall-back position quite different from the one originally taken. With effective damage control, the fall-back position need only be peddled by stooge skeptics to carefully limited markets.

  10. Characterize the crimes as impossibly complex and the truth as ultimately unknowable.

  11. Reason backward, using the deductive method with a vengeance. With thoroughly rigorous deduction, troublesome evidence is irrelevant. E.g. We have a completely free press. If evidence exists that the Vince Foster "suicide" note was forged, they would have reported it. They haven't reported it so there is no such evidence. Another variation on this theme involves the likelihood of a conspiracy leaker and a press who would report the leak.

  12. Require the skeptics to solve the crime completely. E.g. If Foster was murdered, who did it and why?

  13. Change the subject. This technique includes creating and/or publicizing distractions.

  14. Lightly report incriminating facts, and then make nothing of them. This is sometimes referred to as "bump and run" reporting.

  15. Baldly and brazenly lie. A favorite way of doing this is to attribute the "facts" furnished the public to a plausible-sounding, but anonymous, source.

  16. Expanding further on numbers 4 and 5, have your own stooges "expose" scandals and champion popular causes. Their job is to pre-empt real opponents and to play 99-yard football. A variation is to pay rich people for the job who will pretend to spend their own money.

  17. Flood the Internet with agents. This is the answer to the question, "What could possibly motivate a person to spend hour upon hour on Internet news groups defending the government and/or the press and harassing genuine critics?" Don t the authorities have defenders enough in all the newspapers, magazines, radio, and television? One would think refusing to print critical letters and screening out serious callers or dumping them from radio talk shows would be control enough, but, obviously, it is not.

Meta asks users to send nudes

Meta, the new name for Facebook Inc., has co-developed a platform that asks people to submit their intimate photos and videos in order to prevent them from being used as ‘revenge porn’ on Facebook or Instagram.

 

The tool is for “adults over 18 years old who think an intimate image of them may be shared, or has already been shared, without their consent,” Meta said in a blogpost on Thursday.

 

The new platform, which Meta developed together with the UK Revenge Porn Helpline and 50 other NGOs, aims to prevent the publication of ‘revenge porn’, rather than just removing the delicate files after they’ve already appeared online.

 

Concerned users are being asked to submit photos or videos of themselves naked or having sex to a hash-tagging database through the StopNCII.org (Stop Non-Consensual Intimate Images) website.

 

The special hashtags, or “digital fingerprints,” are then assigned to those materials by the tool, and can be used to instantly detect and curb attempts to upload them online by the perpetrators.

 

Meta said that the system had been developed “with privacy and security at every step.” Only the hashtags are being shared with StopNCII.org and the tech platforms participating in the project, while the explicit images and clips never leave the user’s device and remain “securely in the possession of the owner,” it assured.

 

The new tool represents “a sea-change in the way those affected by intimate image abuse can protect themselves,” Revenge Porn Helpline manager Sophie Mortimer insisted.

 

But the question remains whether people will actually be willing to use it, considering Meta’s bad rap for mishandling user data.

AI Training Is Outpacing Moore’s Law

The new set of MLPerf results proves it

The days and sometimes weeks it took to train AIs only a few years ago was a big reason behind the launch of billions of dollars-worth of new computing startups over the last few years—including Cerebras Systems, Graphcore, Habana Labs, and SambaNova Systems. In addition, Google, Intel, Nvidia and other established companies made their own similar amounts of internal investment (and sometimes acquisition). With the newest edition of the MLPerf training benchmark results, there’s clear evidence that the money was worth it.

 

The gains to AI training performance since MLPerf benchmarks began “managed to dramatically outstrip Moore’s Law,” says David Kanter, executive director of the MLPerf parent organization MLCommons. The increase in transistor density would account for a little more than doubling of performance between the early version of the MLPerf benchmarks and those from June 2021. But improvements to software as well as processor and computer architecture produced a 6.8-11-fold speedup for the best benchmark results. In the newest tests, called version 1.1, the best results improved by up to 2.3 times over those from June.

 

For the first time Microsoft entered its Azure cloud AI offerings into MLPerf, muscling through all eight of the test networks using a variety of resources. They ranged in scale from 2 AMD Epyc CPUs and 8 Nvidia A100 GPUs to 512 CPUs and 2048 GPUs. Scale clearly mattered. The top range trained AIs in less than a minute while the two-and-eight combination often needed 20 minutes or more.

 

Nvidia worked closely with Microsoft on the benchmark tests, and, as in previous MLPerf lists, Nvidia GPUs were the AI accelerators behind most of the entries, including those from Dell, Inspur, and Supermicro. Nvidia itself topped all the results for commercially available systems, relying on the unmatched scale of its Selene AI supercomputer. Selene is made up of commercially available modular DGX SuperPod systems. In its most massive effort, Selene brought to bear 1080 AMD Epyc CPUs and 4320 A100 GPUs to train the natural language processor BERT in less than 16 seconds, a feat that took most smaller systems about 20 minutes.

 

According to Nvidia the performance of systems using A100 GPUs has increased more than 5-fold in the last 18 months and 20-fold since the first MLPerf benchmarks three years ago. That’s thanks to software innovation and improved networks, the company says. (For more, see Nvidia's blog.)

 

Given Nvidia’s pedigree and performance on these AI benchmarks, its natural for new competitors to compare themselves to it. That’s what UK-based Graphcore is doing when it notes that it’s base computing unit the Pod16—1 CPU and 16 IPU accelerators—beats the Nvidia base unit the DGX A100—2 CPUs and 8 GPUs—by nearly a minute.

First, i've looked at what different people have said and done and am not in the least convinced that morality can be determined on the basis that someone is a "saved" Christian vs everything else. Second, comparing the demeanor of Gen Flynn versus his critics: Flynn is by far the bigger man in the way he comports himself. No cheap shots. I can't say the same for all others. You can tell a lot about a man by how he behaves when attacked.

 

Third, anons have shared beliefs about Gen. Flynn that may be different than we thought. Doesn't mean he's a bad guy, can just mean he is not what we assumed. Not playing the role we assigned to him. He could even be putting of disinfo for a purpose. Fact is, I just plain don't know. Trying to gather as many different perspectives as possible. Not just one or two.

Russia Ukraine: Biden warns Russia against Ukraine 'red lines'

 

Joe Biden has warned that he will not accept "red lines" set by Moscow as fears mount that Russia is planning an imminent invasion of Ukraine.

The US president said he will make it "very, very difficult" for Russia to invade its neighbour.

Meanwhile, US media has reported that intelligence officials fear an invasion could begin in early 2022.

It comes as Ukraine says Russia has boosted its military at the border and amassed some 94,000 troops there.

"What I am doing is putting together what I believe to be the most comprehensive and meaningful set of initiatives to make it very, very difficult for Mr Putin to go ahead and do what people are worried he's going to do," Mr Biden said as he left for the presidential retreat at Camp David.

While Mr Biden did not set out what precise actions the US plans to take, American and Ukrainian officials warned again this week that severe economic sanctions are on the table against Russia.

On Thursday Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the US had threatened fresh sanctions after his meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Bolsonaro: Brazilian Supreme Court opens investigation into vaccine comments

 

Brazil's Supreme Court has opened an inquiry into comments made by President Jair Bolsonaro wrongly claiming that Covid-19 vaccines may increase the chance of contracting Aids.

The comments, made during a social media livestream in October saw him temporarily banned from Facebook and YouTube under their fake news policies.

Mr Bolsonaro has frequently cast doubt over the effectiveness of vaccines.

So, people have speculated that Hitler and other Nazi leaders took off for South America after the war since many were never found. And, we all know that the Germans had some great scientists. So Levin extrapolates from that. Now we get a man who is hunting these guys played by Laurence Olivier (who was actually a Nazi in "Marathon Man"). The Hitler boys seem to be progressing nicely, being artistic and deadly. There is a lot of science and sociology that would dispute this happening. Remember, Hitler rose to power because of a shattered Germany. If you are totally willing to suspend disbelief, you may enjoy this. I never bought the premise.

Rising COVID Cases Among Vaccinated

 

Reports of fully vaccinated individuals contracting COVID are on the rise. Cases are appearing worldwide, but let’s take a look at Australia as they currently have some of the strictest COVID restrictions in the world. A gym in Sydney only permitted fully vaccinated patrons but was stunned when 15 people fell ill with the virus. The owner said he went “above and beyond” to follow the harsh COVID guidelines, and he had only reopened in October after the government forced gyms to close. In Melbourne, 11 people contracted COVID at a restaurant that also only permitted fully vaccinated patrons. The government will likely vilify small businesses with investigations and fines rather than admitting that the vaccine is ineffective.

 

The Australian government can and will track down anyone who came into contact with the “diseased” and force them to self-isolate regardless of vaccination status. Reuters reported that fully vaccinated Australians must quarantine for 72 hours upon entering their country due to omicron. Plans to allow skilled migrants to enter the country have halted, and the government seems prepared to ruin its economy by implementing additional restrictions for a virus that can never be eradicated. It almost makes sense as to why Australia continues to invest in their quarantine camps — they know the vaccines do not prevent transmission.

Army Is Spending Half a Billion to Train Soldiers to Fight Underground

U.S. Army leaders say the next war will be fought in mega-cities, but the service has embarked on an ambitious effort to prepare most of its combat brigades to fight, not inside, but beneath them.

 

Late last year, the Army launched an accelerated effort that funnels some $572 million into training and equipping 26 of its 31 active combat brigades to fight in large-scale subterranean facilities that exist beneath dense urban areas around the world.

 

For this new type of warfare, infantry units will need to know how to effectively navigate, communicate, breach heavy obstacles and attack enemy forces in underground mazes ranging from confined corridors to tunnels as wide as residential streets. Soldiers will need new equipment and training to operate in conditions such as complete darkness, bad air and lack of cover from enemy fire in areas that challenge standard Army communications equipment.

 

Senior leaders have mentioned small parts of the effort in public speeches, but Army officials at Fort Benning, Georgia's Maneuver Center of Excellence the organization leading the subterranean effort have been reluctant to discuss the scale of the endeavor.

 

"We did recognize, in a megacity that has underground facilities – sewers and subways and some of the things we would encounter … we have to look at ourselves and say 'ok, how does our current set of equipment and our tactics stack up?'" Col. Townley Hedrick, commandant of the Infantry School at the Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, Georgia, told Military.com in an interview. "What are the aspects of megacities that we have paid the least attention to lately, and every megacity has got sewers and subways and stuff that you can encounter, so let's brush it up a little bit."

 

Left unmentioned were the recent studies the Army has undertaken to shore up this effort. The Army completed a four-month review last year of its outdated approach to underground combat, and published a new training manual dedicated to this environment.

 

"This training circular is published to provide urgently needed guidance to plan and execute training for units operating in subterranean environments, according to TC 3-20.50 "Small Unit Training in Subterranean Environments," published in November 2017. "Though prepared through an 'urgent' development process, it is authorized for immediate implementation."

 

A New Priority

 

The Army has always been aware that it might have to clear and secure underground facilities such as sewers and subway systems beneath densely-populated cities. In the past, tactics and procedures were covered in manuals on urban combat such as FM 90-10-1, "An Infantryman's Guide to Combat in Built-up Areas," dated 1993.

 

Before the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the mission for taking large, underground military complexes was given to tier-one special operations units such as Army Delta Force and the Navy's SEAL Team 6, as well as the Army's 75th Ranger Regiment.

 

But the Pentagon's new focus on preparing to fight peer militaries such as North Korea, Russia and China changed all that.

Gandhi led his occupied country to independence with a philosophy of peace. That does not mean violence can’t happen, it just means violence is not the goal. As much as you would like to bring violence to the tyrant and his storm troopers, there is a problem with that. Those storm troopers that check papers and arrest dissenters were your children. Erasing them leaves the problem still in place. You are letting tyrants educate your kids. Solving this problem requires instilling your children with a proper education. Teach them that it is better to die human than to live as a tyrant’s dog.

 

The next problem with violent overthrow of your oppressor comes in the form of food and sustenance. If the entire food and agricultural industry has essentially merged with the government to form an oligarchy that feeds you like a cow on a farm, what will you eat if they are gone? To keep you subjugated, the tyrant must keep you dependent and a willing accomplice to your own enslavement. To be free you must be able to manage your own food production.

 

The key to gaining our freedom, is learning to take care of ourselves. We must examine every area of life where we have come to depend on the establishment for food, medicine, support, education, science, news, communication and community. We must take responsibility for all of these things. The tyrant offers you many good things to conform and comply, but all these things are harvested from you to begin with. If you give nothing to the tyrant and accept nothing in return, the tyrant will have no foothold in your life.

 

Ridding the world of tyrants without learning self-responsibility, would only leave a vacuum that would soon be filled by another tyrant. The tyrants are too few in number to manage the population without the help of the population.

 

We the people are self governed. If duly elected members are in place to enact the will of the people then we may call them our government. If hostile actors are instead pretending to hold this position, then they are simply organized crime and you must structure your life so that they can derive zero support form you and accept nothing from them. Remember, Gandhi wove his own clothing rather than purchase clothes from his oppressors.

Amy Schneider has made ‘Jeopardy!’ history — and helped the show find calm after chaos

Two weeks ago, “Jeopardy!” guest host Ken Jennings kicked off the show by telling the audience that contestant Andrew He had just guaranteed a spot in the next Tournament of Champions by winning five games in a row. “We already know he’ll be facing our other qualifiers this season,” Jennings said, and looked toward He’s two competitors. “Might Max or Amy be adding their names to that list?”

That mundane intro line turned into reality. After a close game, Amy Schneider was the only contestant to answer Final Jeopardy correctly, triumphing over He — and she has been on a wildly impressive streak ever since, winning 11 games so far and racking up $421,200, the seventh-highest winnings ever for a contestant during the regular season.

“I believed that I was pretty good, and I thought I could win three or four games if things went well,” Schneider, 42, said in a phone interview. “I was like, ‘I could win a few, or run into bad luck on the first game and not win and it would be what it is.’ To win 10 and counting — that’s definitely higher than the high end of my internal expectations.”

Schneider, an engineering manager who lives in Oakland, Calif., is also the first transgender contestant in “Jeopardy!” history to make the Tournament of Champions, where the top players from each season compete. During an episode last week, she wore a transgender flag pin and explained on Twitter that she specifically wore it around Thanksgiving because she wanted to show support for the “disproportionately high number of trans people” who are estranged or cut off from their families.

“The fact is, I don’t actually think about being trans all that often, and so when appearing on national television, I wanted to represent that part of my identity accurately: as important, but also relatively minor,” she wrote. “But I also didn’t want it to seem as if it was some kind of shameful secret.”

Schneider was initially a bit hesitant to publish the thread. She has seen prominent trans people speak out on Twitter, and the reaction is not always pleasant. But as she realized she was going to be on national television for a decent stretch of time, she started thinking about how she wanted to talk about that part of her identity. As a once-closeted trans person, she knew others in similar situations would be watching her closely.

“I just want them to know that I see them and I support them and they’re great, and they can do great things,” she said, adding that she wanted to show people in the closeted phase that it’s possible to “be living your true self and having success and doing everything you ever wanted to do.” The online reaction from “Jeopardy!” viewers, with a few rare exceptions, has been overwhelmingly positive, she said, and she’s enjoyed chatting with fans on Twitter and sharing behind-the-scenes details.

Her history-making “Jeopardy!” accomplishment has not been discussed on the show, though it has made plenty of headlines; she’s not the show’s first trans contestant, but many have noted she is the first to make it this far. (She’s also the fourth consecutive player to make it to the Tournament of Champions since Matt Amodio’s 38-game run ended in October.) Schneider chalks up her winning streak to partly luck and timing — “If it wasn’t going to be me it would be somebody else, and it will be somebody else” — though said she’s still very proud.

“Until somebody does it, it can feel unattainable,” she said. “It’s one minor area of human achievement, but it still means something, and it means something to see trans people succeed everywhere.”

Schneider’s run has brought another element to “Jeopardy!”: A sense of calm after the show’s most chaotic year ever, with the hiring and near-immediate firing of former executive producer Mike Richards as host, along with a rotating cast of guest hosts. But 2004 “Jeopardy!” record-breaker Jennings, who is filling in after Mayim Bialik’s stint, has found his footing and has an easy rapport with all the competitors. Schneider said that relaxed feeling — or as relaxed as one can be when you know you’re going to be seen by millions of viewers — was evident on set, as well.

“He’s very relaxed and sets contestants at ease. He knows what we’re going through,” Schneider said. “He wants to get everybody there to be relaxed and have fun: ‘It’s a game, it’s cool, let’s just have a good time out here.’”

I entered the Hollywood machine in 1986 as a prominent-nosed, awkward, geeky, Jewish 11-year-old, basically a scrawnier version of the person I am today. Back then we didn’t have the internet or social media or reality TV, but I didn’t need any of that to understand that I didn’t look or act like other girls in my industry, and that I was immersing myself in a business that rewarded physical beauty and sex appeal above all else.

I grew up constantly being teased about my appearance, even from members of my family; my nose and chin were the main objects of discussion. As a teenager I started obsessing over the possibility of a nose job so that I would look more like Danica McKellar, with a chin job to balance things out. Soon I wondered if I should get breast implants to look more like Christina Applegate, who got so much attention for her curves. I consistently felt like a troll compared to many of my contemporaries. A “TV Guide” critic described me, in a review of the pilot episode of “Blossom,” as having a “shield-shaped” face of “mismatched features.” I never recovered from seeing myself that way.

I always made conservative choices as a young actress, largely informed by my first-generation American parents who were highly skeptical of this industry in general, “This business will use you up and throw you away like a snotty tissue!, and of its men in particular: “They only want one thing.” My mom didn’t let me wear makeup or get manicures. She encouraged me to be myself in audition rooms, and I followed my mother’s strong example to not put up with anyone calling me “baby” or demanding hugs on set. I was always aware that I was out of step with the expected norm for girls and women in Hollywood.

I eventually left the business when I was 19 to pursue a doctorate in neuroscience at the University of California, Los Angeles. I craved being around people who valued me more for what was inside my brain than what was inside my bra. After 12 years away from Hollywood, I returned to acting, largely because I had no health insurance and missed performing and making people laugh.

Those of us in Hollywood who don’t represent an impossible standard of beauty have the “luxury” of being overlooked and, in many cases, ignored by men in power unless we can make them money.

I still make choices every day as a 41-year-old actress that I think of as self-protecting and wise. I have decided that my sexual self is best reserved for private situations with those I am most intimate with. I dress modestly. I don’t act flirtatiously with men as a policy.

I am entirely aware that these types of choices might feel oppressive to many young feminists. Women should be able to wear whatever they want. They should be able to flirt however they want with whomever they want. Why are we the ones who have to police our behavior?

In a perfect world, women should be free to act however they want. But our world isn’t perfect. Nothing, absolutely nothing, excuses men for assaulting or abusing women. But we can’t be naïve about the culture we live in.

I believe that we can change our culture, but it won’t be something that happens overnight. We live in a society that has treated women as disposable playmates for far longer than Mr. Weinstein has been meeting ingénues in luxury hotel rooms.

One major bright spot: We are seeing more women taking on prominent roles behind the camera. Women like Jenji Kohan and Jill Soloway are showing the kinds of female characters on their shows that we all know in real life but never got to see on TV. And more women and men are waking up to the fact that it is on us all to sound the alarm on unacceptable behavior.

In the meantime, I plan to continue to work hard to encourage young women to cultivate the parts of themselves that may not garner them money and fame. If you are beautiful and sexy, terrific. But having others celebrate your physical beauty is not the way to lead a meaningful life.

And if, like me, you’re not a perfect 10, know that there are people out there who will find you stunning, irresistible and worthy of attention, respect and love. The best part is you don’t have to go to a hotel room or a casting couch to find them.

Declassified CIA inspector general reports show a pattern of abuse and a repeated decision by federal prosecutors not to hold agency personnel accountable.

Over the past 14 years, the Central Intelligence Agency has secretly amassed credible evidence that at least 10 of its employees and contractors committed sexual crimes involving children.

Though most of these cases were referred to US attorneys for prosecution, only one of the individuals was ever charged with a crime. Prosecutors sent the rest of the cases back to the CIA to handle internally, meaning few faced any consequences beyond the possible loss of their jobs and security clearances. That marks a striking deviation from how sex crimes involving children have been handled at other federal agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Biohackers Encoded Malware in a Strand of DNA

Researchers planted a working hacker exploit in a physical strand of DNA.

 

When biologists synthesize DNA, they take pains not to create or spread a dangerous stretch of genetic code that could be used to create a toxin or, worse, an infectious disease. But one group of biohackers has demonstrated how DNA can carry a less expected threat—one designed to infect not humans nor animals but computers.

 

In new research they plan to present at the USENIX Security conference on Thursday, a group of researchers from the University of Washington has shown for the first time that it’s possible to encode malicious software into physical strands of DNA, so that when a gene sequencer analyzes it the resulting data becomes a program that corrupts gene-sequencing software and takes control of the underlying computer. While that attack is far from practical for any real spy or criminal, it's one the researchers argue could become more likely over time, as DNA sequencing becomes more commonplace, powerful, and performed by third-party services on sensitive computer systems. And, perhaps more to the point for the cybersecurity community, it also represents an impressive, sci-fi feat of sheer hacker ingenuity.

 

“We know that if an adversary has control over the data a computer is processing, it can potentially take over that computer,” says Tadayoshi Kohno, the University of Washington computer science professor who led the project, comparing the technique to traditional hacker attacks that package malicious code in web pages or an email attachment. “That means when you’re looking at the security of computational biology systems, you’re not only thinking about the network connectivity and the USB drive and the user at the keyboard but also the information stored in the DNA they’re sequencing. It’s about considering a different class of threat.”

 

A Sci-Fi Hack

For now, that threat remains more of a plot point in a Michael Crichton novel than one that should concern computational biologists. But as genetic sequencing is increasingly handled by centralized services—often run by university labs that own the expensive gene sequencing equipment—that DNA-borne malware trick becomes ever so slightly more realistic. Parents captured after son charged in Oxford school shooting

The parents of a teen accused of killing four students in a shooting at a Michigan high school were caught early Saturday, several hours after a prosecutor filed involuntary manslaughter charges against them, officials said.

James and Jennifer Crumbley were captured in a commercial building in Detroit that housed artwork, Detroit Police Chief James E. White told a news conference. White said the couple “were aided in getting into the building,” and that a person who helped them may also face charges.

A Detroit business owner spotted a car tied to the Crumbleys in his parking lot late Friday, Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe said in a statement. A woman seen near the vehicle ran away when the business owner called 911, McCabe said. The couple was later located and arrested by Detroit police.

A prosecutor filed involuntary manslaughter charges against the Crumbleys on Friday, accusing them of failing to intervene on the day of the tragedy despite being confronted with a drawing and chilling message — “blood everywhere” — that was found at the boy’s desk.

The Crumbleys committed “egregious” acts, from buying a gun on Black Friday and making it available to Ethan Crumbley to resisting his removal from school when they were summoned a few hours before the shooting, Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald said.

Authorities had been looking for the couple since Friday afternoon. Late Friday, U.S. Marshals announced a reward of up to $10,000 each for information leading to their arrests.

The Crumbley’s attorney, Shannon Smith, said the pair had left town earlier in the week “for their own safety.” Smith told The Associated Press they would be returning to Oxford to be arraigned.

However, White said the Crumbleys “appeared to be hiding” in the building where they were found. He added that the parents appeared to be “distressed” when they were captured.

“Head down… just very upset,” he said of one of the parents.

The couple was expected to be booked into the Oakland County Jail, McCabe said.

Earlier, the prosecutor offered the most precise account so far of the events that led to the shooting at Oxford High School, roughly 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Detroit.

Ethan Crumbley, 15, emerged from a bathroom with a gun, shooting students in the hallway, investigators said. He’s charged as an adult with murder, terrorism and other crimes.

Under Michigan law, the involuntary manslaughter charge filed against the parents can be pursued if authorities believe someone contributed to a situation where there was a high chance of harm or death.

Parents in the U.S. are rarely charged in school shootings involving their children, even as most minors get guns from a parent or relative’s house, according to experts.

School officials became concerned about the younger Crumbley on Monday, a day before the shooting, when a teacher saw him searching for ammunition on his phone, McDonald said.

Jennifer Crumbley was contacted and subsequently told her son in a text message: “Lol. I’m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught,” according to the prosecutor.

On Tuesday, a teacher found a note on Ethan’s desk and took a photo. It was a drawing of a gun pointing at the words, “The thoughts won’t stop. Help me,” McDonald said.

There also was a drawing of a bullet, she said, with words above it: “Blood everywhere.”

Between the gun and the bullet was a person who appeared to have been shot twice and is bleeding. He also wrote, “My life is useless” and “The world is dead,” according to the prosecutor.

The school quickly had a meeting with Ethan and his parents, who were told to get him into counseling within 48 hours, McDonald said.

The Crumbleys failed to ask their son about the gun or check his backpack and “resisted the idea of their son leaving the school at that time,” McDonald said.

Instead, the teen returned to class and the shooting subsequently occurred.

“The notion that a parent could read those words and also know that their son had access to a deadly weapon that they gave him is unconscionable — it’s criminal,” the prosecutor said.

Jennifer Crumbley texted her son after the shooting, saying, “Ethan, don’t do it,” McDonald said.

James Crumbley called 911 to say that a gun was missing from their home and that Ethan might be the shooter. The gun had been kept in an unlocked drawer in the parents’ bedroom, McDonald said.

Ethan accompanied his father for the gun purchase on Nov. 26 and posted photos of the firearm on social media, saying, “Just got my new beauty today,” McDonald said.

Over the long Thanksgiving weekend, Jennifer Crumbley wrote on social media that it is a “mom and son day testing out his new Christmas present,” the prosecutor said.

Asked at a news conference if the father could be charged for purchasing the gun for the son, McDonald said that would be the decision of federal authorities.

In a video message to the community Thursday, the head of Oxford Community Schools said the high school looks like a “war zone” and won’t be ready for weeks. Superintendent Tim Throne repeatedly complimented students and staff for how they responded to the violence.

He also acknowledged the meeting of Crumbley, the parents and school officials. Throne offered no details but summed it up by saying, “No discipline was warranted.”

McDonald was asked about the decision to keep Crumbley in school.

“Of course, he shouldn’t have gone back to that classroom. … I believe that is a universal position. I’m not going to chastise or attack, but yeah,” she said.

Asked if school officials may potentially be charged, McDonald said: “The investigation’s ongoing.”

China’s communists bash US democracy before Biden summit

China’s Communist Party took American democracy to task on Saturday, sharply criticizing a global democracy summit being hosted by President Joe Biden next week and extolling the virtues of its governing system.

Party officials questioned how a polarized country that botched its response to COVID-19 could lecture others, and said that efforts to force others to copy the Western democratic model are “doomed to fail.”

The harsh rhetoric reflects a growing clash of values that has been thrust into the spotlight as China rises as a global power. The question is whether the United States and other leading democracies can peacefully co-exist with a powerful authoritarian state whose actions are at odds with the Western model that emerged victorious at the end of the Cold War.

The pandemic exposed defects in the American system, said Tian Peiyan, the deputy director of the Communist Party’s Policy Research Office. He blamed the high COVID-19 death toll in the U.S. on political disputes and a divided government from the highest to the lowest levels.

“Such democracy brings not happiness but disaster to voters,” he said at a news conference to release a government report on what the Communist Party calls its form of democracy, which is firmly under party control.

Neither China nor Russia are among about 110 governments that have been invited to Biden’s two-day virtual “Summit for Democracy,” which starts Thursday and will address strengthening democracy, defending against authoritarianism, corruption and human rights.

The participation of Taiwan, a self-governing democracy that China says should be under its rule, has further angered Beijing.

U.S.-China relations remain strained despite a virtual summit between Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping last month. The American president has repeatedly framed differences with China in his broader call for the U.S. and its allies to demonstrate that democracies can offer humanity a better path toward progress than autocracies.

The Communist Party has ruled China single-handedly since 1949. It says that various views are reflected through consultative bodies and elected village and residents committees, but silences most public criticism with censorship and sometimes arrest.

The party argues that strong central leadership is needed to maintain stability in a sprawling country that has been riven by division and war over the centuries.

“In such a large country with 56 ethnic groups and more than 1.4 billion people, if there is no party leadership, … and we uphold the so-called democracy of the West, it will be easy to mess things up and democracy will work the opposite way,” Tian said.

China has been accused of mass incarceration, torture and other human rights violations as it enforces control over ethnic communities in its remote western regions of Tibet and Xinjiang. The party rejects the accusations and says it is rooting out extremism and separatist movements.

The recent difficulties faced by some Western democracies have given Communist Party leaders more confidence in their system as they try to build China into a global power. State media often cite the chaos of the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol after the last presidential election. The report issued Saturday said “today’s world is facing challenges of excessive democracy.”

Chinese officials frequently accuse the U.S. and others of using democracy as a cover to try to suppress China’s rise, a charge echoed at the news conference by Xu Lin, the vice minister of the party’s publicity department.

“The U.S. calls itself a ‘leader of democracy’ and organizes and manipulates the so-called Summit for Democracy,” he said. “In fact, it cracks down and hampers countries with different social systems and development models in the name of democracy.”

Xu called it undemocratic for others to demand their form of democracy, saying they have a mixed track record themselves.

“Their domestic governance is messed up, but they point fingers at and criticize other democracies,” he said. “Is this the democracy they advertised?”

But a goodly number of souls adamantly kept refusing the light. Gaia sadly concluded that she could not wait for them to give up their preference for darkness and, heartened by the millions upon millions who were embracing the light, she kept her pace steady toward her destination in high fifth density. As energy surges propelled the planet into successively higher planes, gradually the pace increased.

 

This brings us to your last two years. What happens on Earth affects the entire universe, and what Gaia and her peoples around the world have been enduring has emanated low vibrations and adversely impacted other worlds. The Illuminati’s recent action was the last straw, so to say, and additional civilizations started beaming massive amounts of light to Earth so everything can occur faster. Thus, karmic lesson completion, truths emerging, resolution of conflicts, corruption uprooted, and circumstances lining up like dominoes to remove all remnants of darkness are in high acceleration.

 

That many distant civilizations now are intervening in a process that will benefit them is neither self-serving nor denying Earth’s peoples the right to manifest the kind of world they want. It is God’s response to Gaia’s request for world transformation to come more swiftly so her peoples can live freely, joyously, peacefully and harmoniously, be nourished in body, mind and spirit, and all their needs supplied in abundance. That is what her peoples want, too.

 

The inpouring of light will enlighten and embolden the masses who believed the blatant lies about the “pandemic.” They will start joining the people who are heeding the honest medical specialists and refusing to be vaccinated or wear immunity-weakening masks and they are protesting lockdowns. The loss of God-given and constitutional rights is nearing the boiling point, and what is upcoming can rightfully be called the peoples’ revolution against evil.

 

Since the Illuminati’s laboratory-made coronavirus failed to cause billions of deaths, they have been making fortunes from covid tests and solutions falsely called vaccines; and, aided and abetted by mainstream media, politicians and scientists in their ranks and those they control are claiming covid variants have become part of life so even infants need to be vaccinated. However, their dark agenda always has called for much more than satisfying avarice and power over the populace, and recently they released another, stronger, lab-manipulated virus to do what the coronavirus didn’t.

well am i wrong in thinking that humans eye patters are different this is why they have optical locks on things. So with an enhanced camera operation and zoom they could start to distinguish that, but wouldnt just wearing sunglasses stop that?
